Atlas Muscle Cars is proud to offer for sale this 1970 numbers matching Plymouth Superbird, this car is a real Superbird with broadcast sheets that have the Nascar annotation on the broadcast sheet. The car does come with its original numbers matching 440 and the original numbers matching transmission. The body on the car is pretty solid except for the rust on the roof from the vinyl top and rust in the floors from water sitting, there is really no rust in the lower quarters, fenders or doors. I would say the rust that is in the car is from sitting and not from driving on roads with salt. The side glass is in really good shape, we are missing the passenger side quarter glass through. The rear glass is also in really nice shape, the stainless window molding is in really nice shape and can be polished back up to look brand new. Car is missing its door panels and other interior parts, however all the important parts of a Superbird are still there and in restorable shape. $75,000.00 obo 972-542-5679 office 214-856-9392 cell 972-562-7965 after hours [email protected] All forms of payment must clear our bank before we will release the car. Well, you should have a wildly popular halo that generates huge buzz and creates truckloads of revenue. In the case of Plymouth and their coveted Road Runner Superbird, that wasn't quite the result. In fact, the division managed to barely surpass the 1,920 cars required to meet NASCAR's renewed homologation rule. And while these slow sellers lingered on lots and didn't do much for the brand during their day, their outrageous nature virtually guaranteed that, in time, they would become exclusive classics serious collectors dream of owning. This highly authentic Superbird is a fully documented, 3-owner dreamboat that wraps rare Black, White and B5 Blue aesthetics around an original 440/A727 drivetrain. And if you're a serious MoPar enthusiast who's looking for a crown jewel classic to lead your collection, it's a chance to turn your reverie into reality! HISTORY Throughout the '60s, Chrysler and Ford were heavily vested in the "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday" sales mentality. And Dodge's Charger 500, despite its NASCAR-inspired tweaks, just wasn't getting the job done. In an attempt to one up Ford's slick and equally fast Torino, Chrysler went to the drawing board and began exploring aerodynamics. While aerodynamics wasn't a new concept, it had yet to be seriously studied by major auto manufacturers. And Chrysler's foray into the subject eventually culminated in testing full scale models at Lockheed Martin's North Carolina wind tunnel. Engineers quickly realized the benefits of a wind-cutting nose, but the real epiphany came when they employed a large rear stabilizer. Not only did that 'rocket nose' and 'park bench' spoiler combination create 'zero lift' downforce, it also produced immense directional stability, permitting speeds in excess of 200 MPH. Not surprisingly, Dodge's storied Daytona won the first race it competed in, and would eventually become one of the most successful NASCAR stock cars of all time. And Plymouth, looking to lure NASCAR star Richard Petty back into the fold, followed Dodge's impressive Daytona with the equally slippery, and some say better, Road Runner Superbird. BODYWORK/TRIM Like many investment grade classics, this impressive Plymouth spent the majority of its 46 years in the hands of one very meticulous enthusiast. Traded in 1971 by its original owner, the car was nabbed by that enthusiast for a whopping $3,300 from Al Davenport Plymouth of Portsmouth, Virginia. In 2012, when that enthusiast decided to pass his beloved 'bird to a third owner, the car benefitted from a thorough, 1.5-year restoration that consisted of a little bodywork and quite a bit of detailing. During that refresh, Accomac, Virginia's Durbin's Auto Body stripped mostly original sheetmetal, welded up a fresh trunk pan, sprayed correct Blue Fire Metallic 2-stage and installed a fresh vinyl top. And today, this warrior rolls as one super slick, all-American muscle car that's so cool it'll make you feel guilty! ENGINE Raise this coupe's long hood and you'll find an original, 440 cubic inch RB V8 that's authenticated by a familiar 2536430 casting number and matching partial VIN. More popular than Chrysler's famed Hemi, and almost as feared as Plymouth's 440 6 BBL, this Super Commando V8 was designed to offer an exceptional combination of speed and civility. Oxygen whips through a correctly decaled, dual snorkel air cleaner to a big Carter carburetor, which is bolted to a glossy, Hemi Orange intake. At the front of that intake, a familiar points distributor sequences fire through reliable 7mm High Temperature plug wires. Behind those wires, Hemi Orange valve covers perfectly contrast correct, cast iron exhaust manifolds. Cooling is provided by a big, 26-inch radiator, which utilizes pliable hoses and simple squeeze clamps to channel water past a correct, 7-blade fan. A correct MoPar red cap utilizes an old school Chrysler voltage regulator to supply the jolts. And, aesthetically, everything in the clean engine bay presents great; from the car's cool factory decals and B5 Blue fenders to its old school washer reservoir and requisite Road Runner horn. According to this Plymouth's current owner, neither the big 440 nor its A727 companion has ever been fully rebuilt. And after the car's restoration, the moody 6 BBL induction noted in accompanying build photos was happily exchanged for a correct 4-barrel set-up. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Park this specialized B-Body on a lift and you'll find a fully sorted undercarriage that, thanks to an acute combination of low mileage and impeccable maintenance, remains very close to the way it left the Lynch Road assembly line. Factory undercoating protects solid floors that, while exceedingly nice, certainly aren't a stranger to the blacktop. Behind the Super Commando, an original A727 Torqueflite hangs a high performance "PK3410670" assembly stamp opposite a matching partial VIN. That proven transmission sends power to a correct 8.75-inch Chrysler rear end that spins a correct Sure Grip differential around correct 3.55 gears. At the front of the car, Chrysler's beefy Hemi Suspension utilizes heavy-duty torsion bars, an A12 sway bar and standard power steering to make quick work of big bumps and tight curves. At the back of the car, that same Hemi Suspension hangs correctly staggered springs at the sides of fresh KYB Gas-A-Just shocks and a stainless fuel tank that feeds stainless fuel lines. Stops come courtesy of standard power front disc and rear drum brakes. Spent gases traverse polished stainless tubes on their way to an H-shaped crossover, polished Dynomax mufflers and correct stainless tips. And all that MoPar goodness rolls on stylish Rallye wheels, which twist F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas tires around bright stainless trim rings and color-keyed center caps. INTERIOR Inside this famous Plymouth, a striking White & Black interior adds to the car's rare and exceptionally attractive aesthetics. Correct bench and bucket seats display no significant signs of wear. In front of those thrones, a straight, crack-free dash hangs correct Rallye gauges beside a correct AM/FM radio. At the bottom of that dash, well-maintained carpet centers a factory shifter on a correct console. At the sides of that carpet, bright door panels complement bright door frames. Above those frames, a tight headliner backs a cool Richard Petty autograph. In front of the driver, a correct, wood-trimmed steering wheel spins satin spokes around a cool Road Runner centerpiece. And behind the passengers, the car's cavernous trunk hides a fresh mat beneath a fifth Rallye wheel and a fifth a Goodyear tire. PROVENANCE In addition to significant historical provenance, this Plymouth's substantial documentation includes Galen Govier Fender Tag and Broadcast Sheet decodes. And Dodge's Charger 500, despite its NASCAR-inspired tweaks, just wasn't getting the job done. In an attempt to one up Ford's slick and equally fast Torino, Chrysler went to the drawing board and began exploring aerodynamics. When you take a close look at this super clean coupe, it seems only fitting that the car's entire 43 year existence was spent in the hands of one very meticulous owner. Purchased new by Ronald North of Huntington, Indiana, it's the recent beneficiary of a modern, two-stage paint job. Thanks to very little exposure to the elements, that unique body was a solid, all-original piece that needed nothing more than prep work. A correct layer of Alpine White presents exceptionally well and, when combined with matte horizontals and correct Superbird call-outs, creates iconic muscle car looks. And today, this Plymouth is one stunningly straight showpiece that has no gremlins, suffers no thin spots and displays a high level of fit and finish. As you step back and stare at this 'bird's sinuous body, many adjectives come to mind. Wicked... Astonishing... Dreadful... Infamous... But, in reality, Chrysler spent a lot of R&D time making sure the car fit one specific descriptor: functional. Every piece of this Road Runner was whittled to maximum efficiency in pursuit of one goal: lapping large race tracks at a very high rate of speed. At the front of the car, a downforce producing nose hangs sleek, flip up headlights between a small grille, standard hood pins, hidden parking lamps and a body-matched chin spoiler. Behind that nose, drag reducing air extractors lead the eye to a cool 'Hustle Stuff' tachometer, clean glass and a show worthy combination of straight stainless trim and pliable black vinyl. At the sides of those extractors, prominent fender lines and Superbird-specific C-pillars frame bright marker lights, a correct Chrysler mirror and familiar chrome door handles. And at the back of the car, a Superbird-specific wing rides above a small "road runner" emblem, clear tail lights, a prominent "P L Y M O U T H" script, bright exhaust tips and an original chrome bumper. Raise this coupe's long hood and you'll find a correct, 440 cubic inch RB V8 that's fully detailed, completely sorted and ready to go. More popular than Chrysler's famed Hemi, and almost as feared, Plymouth's 390 horsepower, 440 6 BBL powerplant was designed to be the industry's best combination of comfort, streetability and big block performance. Oxygen whips through a correctly decaled cleaner to three 2-barrel carburetors, which are bolted over a glossy, Hemi Orange intake. In front of that intake, a familiar points distributor sequences fire through fresh Chrysler Electronic Suppression wires. Behind those wires, Hemi Orange valve covers perfectly contrast correctly restored exhaust manifolds. Cooling is supplied by a big, 26-inch radiator, which utilizes pliable hoses and simple squeeze clamps to send water past fresh V-belts and rebuilt engine accessories. Power is provided by a tagged Mopar red cap battery, which is wired to a correct Chrysler voltage regulator. Aesthetically, the entire engine bay looks spectacular, from its new decals and Alpine White fenders to its old school fluid reservoir and clean Road Runner horn. And functionally, a quick turn of this Plymouth's ignition results in a rumbling, high-performance idle, hot or cold. Hoist this specialized B-Body and you'll find a fully sorted undercarriage that, thanks to an acute combination of low mileage and impeccable maintenance, rolls exactly the way it came down Lynch Road's assembly line. A clean layer of undercoating protects weather-free floorpans that, while exceedingly nice, certainly aren't a stranger to the blacktop. Behind the Super Commando mill, an original A727 Torqueflite, which wears a matching 162346 partial VIN, provides solid, poignant shifts through all three gears. That proven transmission sends power to an 8.75-inch Chrysler rear end which is equipped with correct 3.55 gears. At the front of the car, Chrysler's beefy Hemi suspension utilizes Cosmoline-replicating torsion bars, an A12 sway bar and standard power steering to make quick work of big bumps and tight curves. At the back of the car, that same Hemi suspension hangs correctly staggered springs at the sides of a painted, leak-free fuel tank. Stops come courtesy of standard power front disc and rear drum brakes. Exhaust is handled by aluminized tubes that bend around an H-pipe crossover, traditional turbo mufflers and correct stainless tips. And all this Mopar goodness rolls on pristine Rallye wheels which twist F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs around subdued center caps and bright stainless trim rings. Inside this famous Plymouth, a completely original interior is clean, well-optioned and surprisingly stylish. Seating, an ultra-rare all-bench set up, displays no significant signs of wear. In front of those benches, a straight, crack-free dash hangs original factory gauges beside a familiar Music Master radio. At the bottom of that dash, well-maintained carpet is protected by rubber, "road runner" branded floor mats. At the sides of that carpet, original door panels carry the seat's silver stripe motif around black frames, dent-free stainless and traditional chrome hardware. Above those panels, old school shoulder belts frame a tight, black headliner. In front of the driver, a monochromatic steering wheel spins a silver horn ring around a cool Road Runner centerpiece. And behind the passengers, the car's cavernous trunk is complete with a plaid mat, dual decklid decals, a correct tire and an original jack. The 1970 Plymouth Superbird is arguably the most infamous muscle car in American history. Approximately 1920 were made in the year 1970 only. It is said 900 to 1000 exist today, and maybe even fewer. Certainly there are far and few between still laying around in the shape of the car we have here. This Bird has been through a very short list of ownership, all tracked by a great deal of significant paperwork. This paper-trail covers a wide spectrum of registrations (even from the original owner), multiple service records over the years, and of course the build sheet. It has authentic documentation for its periodic restorations and it’s storied history. This is a numbers matching car! The most recent owner is a Mopar collector with multiple Daytona’s, Road Runners and Superbirds. A true aficionado of these cars and with one walk around this Winged Warrior, youll see evidence of this everywhere. A two year “rotisserie” restoration was recently completed. There are about 200 test miles on the car since completion. As you can see in the pics the car underwent a complete “rotisserie” restoration. Options added not on the fender tag are; rallye instruments, 383 stripe, right hand sport mirror and replacement of the original 3-speed transmission with a 4-speed. I have included a list of parts and material that add up to over $31,000 used during the extensive restoration. If you are looking for a unique Cuda Convertible that you can get in and enjoy this summer this is a great car for you. It is highly unlikely you will see another one with these options. This car has been off the road and market for many years, so you will be the first to show it this summer. I have sold several cars on eBay over the past 16 years and have always received positive feedback (check my seller feedback). I am not a dealer, just a hobbyist and it is important to me that the buyer is satisfied with the car. You can be assured I have described the car to the best of my knowledge and will answer your questions honestly. It would be near impossible to find an original 383 Cuda convertible and restore it to this level for my price on this car. I have a clear AZ title in my name. Keep in mind there are various levels of “restored cars” for sale. This one was taken down to the bare metal unibody and completely rotisserie restored. *I have included over 100 pics below *Foose wheels are not included with the car. I included one pic to show how the car looks with custom wheels. Professional “rotisserie” restoration recently completed by Huffman Auto Body. Huffman Auto Body has won multiple first place awards at National events such as the Mopar Nationals and Chryslers at Carlisle. This is the owner’s personal car and has been restored to a very high standard. The car was restored back to the original fender tag options. The original fender tag is on the car (no reproduction). The original broadcast sheet also is included with the car. The only added options are power steering, power disk brakes and spoilers. Since the restoration the car has been driven for one summer to mainly local shows (~3000 miles) with a total of 94,218 miles showing on the odometer. This is an opportunity to own one of nicest 1971 Road Runners in the county at price significantly less than the restoration cost. When comparing this car to other cars on the market, you should consider the quality, level of detail and amount of new parts used on this car. There are other 1971 Road Runners on the market for sale for less money, but I do not believe you will find a better value The dash VIN, Engine, Radiator Support and Original Fender Tag numbers all match. The transmission is not numbers matching and there is no VIN stamped in the cowl. I have included a list of parts that add up to ~$24,000 used during the extensive restoration. If you are looking for a true “turn key”, professionally restored car that needs nothing, this is the car for you. I have sold several cars on eBay over the past 13 years and have always received positive feedback. I am not a dealer, just a hobbyist and it is important to me that the buyer is satisfied with the car. You can be assured I have described the car to the best of my knowledge and will answer your questions honestly. It is still buyer’s market for muscle cars and this car is priced accordingly. It would be nearly impossible to find an original 71 383 Road Runner and restore it to this level for my reserve price on this car. Minor Flaws Small Crack in Air Grabber Air BoxFour Speed Radiator with After Market Trans Cooler Body/ Paint/Trim As you can see in the pics this car is very solid with no hidden rust issues. The body work and paint are excellent. All the body lines and gaps are excellent as you would expect with a professional restoration. The original bumpers have been re-chromed. The stainless steel trim was polished. The door handles are new. All the rubber seals, gaskets, window felts, emblems etc were replaced during the restoration. The windshield and one quarter window glass are new. The remaining glass is original and in good condition. Mechanical/Electrical This car runs and drives excellent. It goes down the road straight and stops straight as expected. You can feel confident that you can get in this car and drive it anywhere in the country. The original 383 has been completely rebuilt at a cost of $5500. The engine runs perfectly and does not get hot. The fuel tank, fuel lines and fuel pump are also new. The rebuilt 727 transmission shifts and works perfectly. The 8 ¾ rear end has sure grip 3:55 gears. The car has a completely rebuilt braking system, including power front disk brakes. The exhaust is completely new including the tips. The front end is completely rebuilt. The wheels are new 15X8 and 15X7 rallyes with new BF Goodrich T/A Radials and new centers qnd trim rings. Almost everything under the hood is new including, water pump, alternator, starter, hoses, wiring harnesses, belts, plugs, plug wires, battery washer bottle, squirters etc. The rallye instruments have been rebuilt and refaced. Everything on the car works; horn, lights, wipers, heater, radio, gauges, fog lamps, including the tach and clock etc. The car also runs nice with the newly recored 3 row radiator. The gauge cluster has been completely restored at a cost of over $1200. Interior The interior has new Legendary seat covers, carpet and headliner. The upper door panels and dash pad are new as well. The steering wheel is a new tuff wheel. After market AM/FM radio. There is a big variation in the level of restorations you will see when looking at cars for sale on the Internet. I want the buyer to know exactly what he/she is buying. As you can see below all the parts cost add up quickly when doing a restoration correctly. This is a very high quality show level restoration. This represents the majority of the parts purchased, however I am sure I missed some. This does not include material and professional restoration labor. 1979 Dodge Magnum GT Dodge made 1,674 Magnum GTs in 1979 and to the best of my knowledge only 162 with the “Police Package" driveline (L code on VIN and E58 on fender tag). How many GT’s have survived with this drivetrain and T-tops too? I only know of one other and it was highlighted in the July 1998 edition Chrysler Car Enthusiast Magazine. I will do my best here to provide as accurate and detailed information as possible so you can make an informed decision. I bought this car back in 2002 after it had been restored by a gentleman in North Carolina. Originally, I believe this car to be from Virginia. It has not been driven in winter conditions since I’ve owned it and only in rain if caught in it. From the pictures I received during the restoration it did have some small amount of rust at the bottom of each quarter panel; behind the rear tires. That obviously has been fixed. Overall I’d say the man who did the restoration did a very, very nice job. However, it was not a rotisserie restoration. Below, I will go into detail about the New Old Stock (NOS) parts he installed. I do not know if the powertrain was worked on at all. It runs very strong for a heavier car. The police package was known to be “bullet-proof”, no pun intended, and this one is no exception. Unfortunately, I do not have the build sheet. It may still be in the vehicle somewhere but I haven’t found it. With as many NOS materials as were used on the interior during the restoration, it probably was discarded. But, I don’t know for sure. With the fender tag and VIN decoded, it provides quite a bit of information anyway. This vehicle has won and placed in many local shows over the years. A few years back now it took 2nd at Chryslers at Carlisle to an almost perfect, ’78 Magnum GT w/T’s. VIN: XS22L9R****** Fender Tag: N41-Dual Exhaust w/o Tips G55-Left Outside Painted Racing Mirror G67-Right Outside Painted Racing Mirror H51-Air Conditioning with Front Heater (AC compressor runs when charged but there is a leak. Heater works great) M27-Wheel Lip Flares M55-T-Bar Roof (Yes, the T-tops do leak slightly. I’ve tried to fix that and have improved it but not completely. It’s not bad and since it’s a nice weather driver no big deal) K5C-Vinyl Body Side Molding A75-GT Package (wheel lip flares, G60x15 outline white letter Goodyear tires, heavy duty front and rear sway bars, quick ratio steering, leather wrapped steering wheel, engine turned dash and console appliques) C16-Console C56-Bucket Seats-Non Recliner EW1-Spinnaker White Paint B12-Heavy Duty Front Disk Brakes B28-11x2.5 Rear Brakes E58-360 Cubic Inch, 8 Cylinder, 4 Barrel Carburetor (ThermoQuad), Dual Exhaust D36-A727 Automatic Transmission Vehicle Options: 8-Track AM/FM Stereo with 4 Speakers (8-track works good but hard to find good 8-tracks. AM/FM works most of the time) Rallye Instrument Panel with Tachometer, Water Temp, Oil Pressure, Fuel Level, and Alternator gauge (doesn’t move much) Chronometer Digital Clock (works perfectly – this is not the electro mechanical clock from previous year Chrysler products) 3.21 Sure-Grip Differential Magnum 15x7 Road Wheels Blue Body Side Tape Stripes Electronic Remote Trunk Release Carpeted Trunk Inside Hood Release The difference of an E58 car? This is the highest performance engine Dodge put in their vehicles in 1979. They put these in the Lil Red Express truck which, for 1979, were the fastest tested truck that year. The E58 package had a performance valve train including: cam, valves, valve springs, rockers, double roller timing chain, dual exhaust, non-lockup torque converter, large brakes and radiator. Among dozens of other things, I have replaced the Spark Control Computer with a MoPar Performance Electronic Ignition. The computer (not a Lean Burn - that was 1978) still worked okay and is still on the air cleaner if desired to be hooked back up. This computer is correct for the police package and supposed to be higher performance. I however, wanted the reliability and possible increased performance of the vacuum advance and newer electronics. The car responded nicely to the upgrade. Recently, I put on 4 new Goodyear tires to get the look closest to that of the original tires. These currently have probably less than 500 miles on them. As far as the other things I’ve replaced over the years, this is just a sample: radiator, water pump, thermostat, most engine hoses except AC, front wheel bearings, alternator, ignition switch, voltage regulator, fuel pump, rear brake lines, coil, etc. etc. etc. Car still has the original leather bag (really nice condition) that holds the glass T-top panels. In 2009, this car was featured on month April in the ‘MoPar Style ‘Annual Calendar. NOS equipment – As I mentioned the gentleman who restored it used many new Chrysler parts. Here is the list as I know it. NOS: headlight doors (work fantastic) and park/turn signal lights, factory dark blue vinyl interior fabric, factory dark blue carpet, horn buttons, and tail light assemblies. All of the exterior chrome was redone at restoration and done very well. Stainless has all been polished multiple times. I am not sure if he replaced the dash pad or not but it’s nearly perfect. Overall, the interior is in very nice. Headliner is near perfect as is the package tray, courtesy light lenses, all kick panels, etc. One of the seat belts is missing the blue colored trim piece. The paint overall is extremely good. There is no rust on the body or underneath except for a small bubble on the passenger side rocker. It has not gotten larger over the last 10 years and it has not come through. There is no rust in the trunk at all (not sure if that was replaced at restoration or not but I don’t believe so). Please note the paint is not perfect. There are a few (like two or three) pinhole size chips that I have not touched up. The underside of the car is pretty much factory original; clean and solid. The floor boards are very solid and again, as far as I know, original. The engine bay has had quite a bit of attention to it but was not completely repainted at the restoration. It is very well detailed and I did find and replace many of the factory markings/stickers. I have three boxes of additional parts I will include (came with the car when I bought it). Not sure if it’s complete or not but there are parts to convert the car to electric windows including a NOS window switch. So that’s it in a nutshell. I feel the Buy-it-Now price is reasonable but will consider other reasonable offers. You should be able to drive this car anywhere and it will show well. Plus, you can be almost guaranteed it will be the only Magnum at your local show. Many people do not even know Dodge made this model for 2 years! I will accept a wire transfer, money order, or check (cleared before title transfer), or certified check at transfer and a $2,000 deposit. I am advertising in multiple locations and reserve the right to pull this ad. Buyer is responsible for shipping. This vehicle does not come with a warrantee and is being sold as-is.
