If these cars are so special, why didn't someone take better care of them? This special-order Speed Yellow 1968 Shelby GT500KR is unquestionably a spectacular car, but it was almost lost forever and presents an interesting case study in seeing the forest for the trees. Literally hours away from the crusher, it was rescued by someone who recognized its greatness where others saw nothing but a burned-out shell of an old Mustang. In 1978, even a Shelby GT500KR convertible (with AC!) was little more than a used car. Certain astute collectors at the time recognized that these were special cars, but they had not yet gathered the immense following they enjoy today. Even Carroll Shelby himself had turned his back on the Mustangs bearing his name years earlier, dismissing them as little more than interesting footnotes to the Mustang story. So when Shelby 03900 was stolen, stripped of its engine and transmission, then set on fire, there was no public outcry. And the original owner probably happily cashed the check the insurance company gave him as compensation. The stripped, burned-out carcass was hauled away to a local scrap yard called Twin Service in Anderson, Indiana, where it was scheduled to be crushed just like any other stripped, burned-out theft recovery. However, a sharp-eyed enthusiast spotted the body at Twin Service and immediately made his move. Noting the original Shelby fender tag was still intact and therefore knowing the car was a top-of-the-line GT500KR convertible, he arranged to purchase it for $500 just hours before it was slated to hit the crusher. He paid the wrecking service to drag the car to his home where he began an extensive restoration. In 1978, you could still order Shelby parts directly from Ford, so all new fiberglass OEM pieces were purchased to replace those that were destroyed by the fire. Other missing parts were tracked down and added to the growing collection of NOS equipment that would restore 03900 to its original condition. Sadly, that never happened, as even in 1978, the resources required to restore a Shelby Mustang, never mind one that was burned, were substantial. Eventually the car and all its associated parts were sold, bouncing from collector to collector for almost 20 years. By the late '90s, it had become pretty clear that the cost of restoring the car was insignificant compared to the value of a finished product, so at least one previous owner made a heroic effort to restore the car using a donor vehicle to supply items like the correct black interior and other irreplaceable parts. His workmanship must have been very, very good, because the pros at Custom Classics, who re-restored the car several years later, could find no trace of fire damage. When this Mustang landed at Custom Classics, many of the NOS parts acquired by the first restorer were still on the car and the remaining correct, authentic and original components were assembled to create an absolutely stunning convertible. The car itself is no less remarkable than its story. Originally delivered to Dallas, Texas, it carries special-order WT6066 yellow paint, factory AC, a C6 automatic transmission and a tilt steering column. It is 1 of only 20 Shelby convertibles painted WT6066 yellow and, of those, 1 of only 7 equipped with air conditioning. Custom Classics' spectacular restoration incorporated all the aforementioned NOS parts plus hundreds more that were painstakingly researched and properly date-coded. The paint is 2-stage urethane that exactly duplicates special order Bright Yellow and looks especially good under correct stripes and call-outs. Naturally, any flaws carried by the original fiberglass have been thoroughly exorcised (even after Ford took over Shelby production, the 'glass wasn't all that great). Panel alignment is exceptional, gaps are even all around and the car fits together better than any Mustang ever built by the factory. When it comes to trimmings, all the correct Shelby badges and lettering, including the awesome 428 Cobra Jet emblems, have been replaced with NOS or exact reproduction pieces. The tail panel, with correct Thunderbird sequential taillights, is beautifully finished in correct Argent Silver and, yes, those are real Lucas driving lights in the grille. Side marker lamps, new for 1968, are beautiful reproduction pieces, and the bumpers show better chrome than was humanly possible in 1968. All glass is new, stainless is polished and there's absolutely no detail on this drop-top that's been overlooked. The car is vastly nicer than new in every way! The incredible detailing extends under the hood, where a rebuilt, date-correct 428 Cobra Jet looks right at home. Rated at 335 horsepower, it's no secret that the mighty CJ actually made around 410 horsepower and 440 lb./ft. of stoplight-slaying torque. Bathed in rich Ford Blue, this particular mill features correct "COBRA" valve covers, functional ram-air and a complete thermactor system. The engine bay is dominated by a massive compressor for the AC system, which is fully functional and blows ice cold. Correct hoses, clamps, wiring, and clips were used throughout the engine compartment, resulting in a highly accurate, concours-ready appearance. An original radiator is perched up front, with a reproduction Autolite battery cover doing a very good impersonation of the real thing. And the mean motor rumbles to life easily, pulling with an endless well of torque that absolutely incinerates those skinny Goodyear tires. The chassis looks exactly factory correct as well. Red Oxide primer backs 'blown in' Bright Yellow paint, just like on the assembly line. The C6 automatic has been rebuilt and, like the engine, is correct for a Shelby GT500KR. Out back, there's a bulletproof Ford 9-inch that's fitted with 3.00 gears. Original factory markings have been reproduced, from the driveshaft balance stripes to the torque dobs on the suspension bolts. The original factory convertible reinforcements are in place. An exact reproduction exhaust system has been installed, complete with correct tips. A new gas tank hangs amid fully rebuilt brakes and suspension. Gorgeous 10-spoke Shelby alloys carry Goodyear bias-ply tires, although it appears that the car's spare is an original or NOS piece. The interior remains the one transplanted by the previous restorer. And, since it's far more correct and accurate than any reproduction kit available today, Custom Classics decided to leave it as-is. The seats are deep and comfortable, and we're inclined to agree with Custom Classics in their assessment-the reproduction seat covers don't have pleats that are as deep as those on an original car, and these sure look authentic. The Shelby Cobra logo on the center armrest is crisp and clear and not overstuffed-looking like the reproductions, and the woodgrain pattern on the dash and center console is excellent. We have to believe the carpets are reproductions, and they are correct in material and ply, protected by a set of rubber floor mats. The Rim Blow steering wheel is just too nice not to be a restored piece. And the gauges have clearly been rebuilt, with crisp markings, deep black backgrounds and brilliant orange pointers. In addition to being listed in the SAAC Registry with a known ownership history, original photos of this Mustang's scrapyard stay include images of an original Shelby fender tag that matches the one currently on the car. Long regarded as one of the most iconic mills ever created, factory-supplied Cobra Jets utilized a strengthened medium block, heavy-duty rods, a nodular crankshaft, and larger valves and ports to produce an advertised 335 horsepower. At the top of the engine, ram air cowl induction centers a "COBRA JET" branded air cleaner over a high performance intake. At the sides of that intake, cast iron heads hang crinkle-finish Cobra LeMans valve covers over fully restored exhaust manifolds. The fires are lit by a familiar points distributor, which sequences sparks through fresh Autolite Radio Resistance plug wires. Cooling comes courtesy of a stock radiator, which circulates water through pliable FoMoCo hoses. And charging is provided by squeak-free belts, which spin a rebuilt alternator and correct power steering via simple black pulleys. Aesthetically, the clean engine bay appears very close to original, featuring an even combination of Satin Black and Ford Blue paint. And everything, from the car's tagged Autolite battery to its tidy Ford washer tank, appears fully sorted and ready to show. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Take a look under this Mustang and you'll find exceedingly clean floors that are every bit as solid as the body's straight exterior panels. The tough C6 3-speed, one of 523 bolted under 1968 KRs, spins a correct Traction-Lok differential around correct 3.50 gears. ENGINE While the car's professionally rebuilt engine isn't original equipment, it is a highly accurate, date-correct 428. Long regarded as one of the most iconic mills ever created, factory-supplied Cobra Jets utilized a strengthened medium block, heavy-duty rods, a nodular crank, and larger valves and ports to produce an advertised 335 horsepower. At the top of the engine, ram air cowl induction centers a correct, SM8S-equipped air cleaner over a date-correct carburetor and high performance intake. At the sides of that intake, cast iron heads hang crinkle-finish Cobra LeMans valve covers over fully restored exhaust manifolds. The fires are lit by a familiar points distributor, which sequences sparks through fresh Autolite Radio Resistance plug wires. Cooling comes courtesy of a re-cored radiator, which circulates water through pliable Autolite hoses and vintage screw clamps. And charging is provided by squeak-free V-belts, which spin a rebuilt alternator between correct power steering and correct smog equipment. Aesthetically, the marked and decaled engine bay appears very close to original, featuring an even combination of Satin Black and Ford Blue paint. And everything, from the car's factory brake booster and fresh Autolite battery to its tidy Ford washer tank and fresh Autolite voltage regulator, is fully sorted and ready to show. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Take a look under this Mustang and you'll find correct, Oxide Red floors that are such a close interpretation of the car's original foundation that they back correct Lime Gold overspray with factory-accurate paint drips. A tough C6 3-speed utilizes a correctly marked Dead Nuts On driveshaft to spin a correct Traction-Lok differential around correct 3.50 gears. At the front of that drivetrain, a rebuilt suspension centers a beefy sway bar and the aforementioned power steering between correct power disc brakes. At the back of that drivetrain, correct C7ZA leaf springs hang correct drum brakes at the edges of a clean stainless fuel tank. At the center of that suspension, fresh exhaust pipes funnel spent gases through an H-shaped crossover, small resonators and a transversely mounted muffler. And power meets the ground through E70-15 Kelsey repros, which wrap correct, KR-exclusive black sidewalls around appropriate Shelby 10-spokes. INTERIOR Naturally, Ol' Shel focused most of his energy on the performance and appearance of America's most revered pony car. If these cars are so special, why didn't someone take better care of them? This special-order Speed Yellow 1968 Shelby GT500KR is unquestionably a spectacular car, but it was almost lost forever and presents an interesting case study in seeing the forest for the trees. Literally hours away from the crusher, it was rescued by someone who recognized its greatness where others saw nothing but a burned-out shell of an old Mustang. In 1978, even a Shelby GT500KR convertible (with AC!) was little more than a used car. Certain astute collectors at the time recognized that these were special cars, but they had not yet gathered the immense following they enjoy today. Even Carroll Shelby himself had turned his back on the Mustangs bearing his name years earlier, dismissing them as little more than interesting footnotes to the Mustang story. So when Shelby 03900 was stolen, stripped of its engine and transmission, then set on fire, there was no public outcry. And the original owner probably happily cashed the check the insurance company gave him as compensation. The stripped, burned-out carcass was hauled away to a local scrap yard called Twin Service in Anderson, Indiana, where it was scheduled to be crushed just like any other stripped, burned-out theft recovery. However, a sharp-eyed enthusiast spotted the body at Twin Service and immediately made his move. Noting the original Shelby fender tag was still intact and therefore knowing the car was a top-of-the-line GT500KR convertible, he arranged to purchase it for $500 just hours before it was slated to hit the crusher. He paid the wrecking service to drag the car to his home where he began an extensive restoration. In 1978, you could still order Shelby parts directly from Ford, so all new fiberglass OEM pieces were purchased to replace those that were destroyed by the fire. Other missing parts were tracked down and added to the growing collection of NOS equipment that would restore 03900 to its original condition. Sadly, that never happened, as even in 1978, the resources required to restore a Shelby Mustang, never mind one that was burned, were substantial. Eventually the car and all its associated parts were sold, bouncing from collector to collector for almost 20 years. By the late '90s, it had become pretty clear that the cost of restoring the car was insignificant compared to the value of a finished product, so at least one previous owner made a heroic effort to restore the car using a donor vehicle to supply items like the correct black interior and other irreplaceable parts. His workmanship must have been very, very good, because the pros at Custom Classics, who re-restored the car several years later, could find no trace of fire damage. When this Mustang landed at Custom Classics, many of the NOS parts acquired by the first restorer were still on the car and the remaining correct, authentic and original components were assembled to create an absolutely stunning convertible. The car itself is no less remarkable than its story. Originally delivered to Dallas, Texas, it carries special-order WT6066 yellow paint, factory AC, a C6 automatic transmission and a tilt steering column. It is 1 of only 20 Shelby convertibles painted WT6066 yellow and, of those, 1 of only 7 equipped with air conditioning. Custom Classics' spectacular restoration incorporated all the aforementioned NOS parts plus hundreds more that were painstakingly researched and properly date-coded. The paint is 2-stage urethane that exactly duplicates special order Bright Yellow and looks especially good under correct stripes and call-outs. Naturally, any flaws carried by the original fiberglass have been thoroughly exorcised (even after Ford took over Shelby production, the 'glass wasn't all that great). Panel alignment is exceptional, gaps are even all around and the car fits together better than any Mustang ever built by the factory. When it comes to trimmings, all the correct Shelby badges and lettering, including the awesome 428 Cobra Jet emblems, have been replaced with NOS or exact reproduction pieces. The tail panel, with correct Thunderbird sequential taillights, is beautifully finished in correct Argent Silver and, yes, those are real Lucas driving lights in the grille. Side marker lamps, new for 1968, are beautiful reproduction pieces, and the bumpers show better chrome than was humanly possible in 1968. All glass is new, stainless is polished and there's absolutely no detail on this drop-top that's been overlooked. The car is vastly nicer than new in every way! The incredible detailing extends under the hood, where a rebuilt, date-correct 428 Cobra Jet looks right at home. Rated at 335 horsepower, it's no secret that the mighty CJ actually made around 410 horsepower and 440 lb./ft. of stoplight-slaying torque. Bathed in rich Ford Blue, this particular mill features correct "COBRA" valve covers, functional ram-air and a complete thermactor system. The engine bay is dominated by a massive compressor for the AC system, which is fully functional and blows ice cold. Correct hoses, clamps, wiring, and clips were used throughout the engine compartment, resulting in a highly accurate, concours-ready appearance. An original radiator is perched up front, with a reproduction Autolite battery cover doing a very good impersonation of the real thing. And the mean motor rumbles to life easily, pulling with an endless well of torque that absolutely incinerates those skinny Goodyear tires. The chassis looks exactly factory correct as well. Red Oxide primer backs 'blown in' Bright Yellow paint, just like on the assembly line. The C6 automatic has been rebuilt and, like the engine, is correct for a Shelby GT500KR. Out back, there's a bulletproof Ford 9-inch that's fitted with 3.00 gears. Original factory markings have been reproduced, from the driveshaft balance stripes to the torque dobs on the suspension bolts. The original factory convertible reinforcements are in place. An exact reproduction exhaust system has been installed, complete with correct tips. A new gas tank hangs amid fully rebuilt brakes and suspension. Gorgeous 10-spoke Shelby alloys carry Goodyear bias-ply tires, although it appears that the car's spare is an original or NOS piece. The interior remains the one transplanted by the previous restorer. And, since it's far more correct and accurate than any reproduction kit available today, Custom Classics decided to leave it as-is. The seats are deep and comfortable, and we're inclined to agree with Custom Classics in their assessment-the reproduction seat covers don't have pleats that are as deep as those on an original car, and these sure look authentic. The Shelby Cobra logo on the center armrest is crisp and clear and not overstuffed-looking like the reproductions, and the woodgrain pattern on the dash and center console is excellent. We have to believe the carpets are reproductions, and they are correct in material and ply, protected by a set of rubber floor mats. The Rim Blow steering wheel is just too nice not to be a restored piece. And the gauges have clearly been rebuilt, with crisp markings, deep black backgrounds and brilliant orange pointers. In addition to being listed in the SAAC Registry with a known ownership history, original photos of this Mustang's scrapyard stay include images of an original Shelby fender tag that matches the one currently on the car. I always wanted the grabber blue with white stripes. When I found the one D&M had for sale I knew I wanted the car because it was 2010 grabber blue with red stripe ( never seen the combo before ) I always said I would never buy a car sight unseen but everything just felt right. During that time I have had over 12 Corvettes and during the last 3 years I have been collecting High end classic cars. After working on a friends Corvette I got the bug to get another Corvette. I went to the internet site of D&M Motorsports . Their site has all High Def photos that are taken by a professional photographer and I found a pristine 1993 40th Anniversary Corvette with only 1,300 documented miles. I went up to D&M and Dave handled the sale. We settled on a price and I purchased the car that day. Because of the low miles on the car Dave arranged with Mike to deliver the car in an enclosed trailer to my home. Mike is the President & owner of D&M yet he took the time to deliver the car himself. In 67 years I have never taken the time to write a review on anyone, but D&M is truly special. Kevin & Angie were also fun to talk with and my entire experience was like hanging out with good friends. I went back to pick up my plates and ended up buying a 2001 Vette. The truly unusual part of this deal was Mike took my pristine 1940 Chevy coupe in on trade. D&M is a High end sports car and Corvette dealer yet he took an antique car in on trade just to close the deal. Either you're so mad at the product or the seller you write a scathing report or you're so enthralled 2 days after you buy you gush with enthusiasm. No one seems to take the time to evaluate and come to a proper review to help the people looking for information. So I hope my words will be of value for a potential customer. I started looking for a Corvette in October of 2013 all over the Midwest and D & M Motorsports was just one of the dealers I pestered for 4 months, in those months I met with Angie and Dave checking out the cars I previously viewed and all their new arrivals. At no time was I pressured to purchase and every meeting was cordial and all my questions were answered no matter how long it took. In February 2014 they got in the car I wanted and I made an offer they agreed too and with the contingency I could have the car checked out. Not only did they agree to my terms they even stored the car for a month till the weather broke and at no charge. The whole experience was 1st class and I was never treated better by a dealer new or used. I always wanted the grabber blue with white stripes. When I found the one D&M had for sale I knew I wanted the car because it was 2010 grabber blue with red stripe ( never seen the combo before ) I always said I would never buy a car sight unseen but everything just felt right. During that time I have had over 12 Corvettes and during the last 3 years I have been collecting High end classic cars. After working on a friends Corvette I got the bug to get another Corvette. I went to the internet site of D&M Motorsports . Their site has all High Def photos that are taken by a professional photographer and I found a pristine 1993 40th Anniversary Corvette with only 1,300 documented miles. I went up to D&M and Dave handled the sale. We settled on a price and I purchased the car that day. Because of the low miles on the car Dave arranged with Mike to deliver the car in an enclosed trailer to my home. Mike is the President & owner of D&M yet he took the time to deliver the car himself. Either you're so mad at the product or the seller you write a scathing report or you're so enthralled 2 days after you buy you gush with enthusiasm. I started looking for a Corvette in October of 2013 all over the Midwest and D & M Motorsports was just one of the dealers I pestered for 4 months, in those months I met with Angie and Dave checking out the cars I previously viewed and all their new arrivals. At no time was I pressured to purchase and every meeting was cordial and all my questions were answered no matter how long it took. And this 2004 Viper SRT-10 is a low mileage, all original Mopar halo which mixes the best virtues of world class performance with the open air freedom of a drop top exotic. Virtually new in every way, this pristine 2004 SRT-10 roadster is coated in Viper Bright Silver Metallic paint which, unlike most modern cars, displays a fantastic wet-look finish and super smooth reflections. As is the case with most Vipers, this car has been a meticulously cared for toy rather than a daily driver or a weekend track weapon; and as a result, has led a very easy life which involved a minimum of sunny day driving and a lifetime of climate controlled storage. Naturally, fit and finish are exceptionally good with composite body panels that show no signs of age-related stress, and a glossy, smooth paint job which is nice enough to adorn the fenders of a painstakingly restored show car. Inspired by the classic lines of the Shelby Cobra roadster and the modern flair of Dodge's own Stealth performance coupe, the Viper was an absolutely revolutionary design when it debuted, and is still considered an exotic today. The front of the car centers a menacing Dodge crosshair grille between, clear HID headlights and fog lights. At the top of that grille, a striking Viper emblem leads your eye to the cars functional ram air hood which features heat extractors on either side. Behind that hood, pristine factory glass which is bordered by body-matched mirrors and unique B-pillar mounted door handles is topped by a black convertible soft top. At the sides of the car, aggressively sculpted doors and chip-free fiberglass rockers sit between super wide rear fenders, side pipe exhausts, and body-matched "Viper SRT-10" emblems. At the back of the car, showroom fresh tail lights hang above a stylized rear bumper, which features body-matched "Dodge" and "Viper" scripts. The engine under this cars massivehood needs no introduction. Displacing a massive 8.3 liters and turning a stout 9.6 to 1 compression ratio into 500 horsepower at 5,600RPMS and 525 lb./ft. of torque, this 507 cubic inch aluminum beast is one of the most outrageous powerplants ever bolted between the fenders of a production car. Dodge designers knew the big mill would be the cars focal point, so they went out of their way to dress it up a bit by coating the ram tuned aluminum intake manifold and cast aluminum valve covers in a slick coat of bright red paint and menacing Viper logos. In fact, it's such an impressive piece that I'm really surprised the Mopar guys didn't put a Lexan window in the hood like Team Corvette did for the ZR1. This Viper's big engine is absolutely immaculate from its dual throttle bodies all the way down to its aluminum oil pan, tubular stainless exhaust manifolds and regularly refreshed fluids; and everything under its hood is showroom fresh and looks as clean as the day the car rolled out of the 'snake pit' in Detroit. Underneath the car, you'll find a spotless chassis, that's complete with a 6-speed manual transmission that sends power to a limited slip differential. The combination of the three is able to push the Viper to a sub 12 second quarter-mile time of 11.77 at 123.68mph. However the independent front and rear suspension also impressed critics when it was first unveiled and meant that on a skid pad the Viper was able to push to 1.05g. At the corners of the car, power four wheel disc brakes, which come equipped with both standard electronic distribution and a state-of-the-art anti-lock system, squeeze "Viper" branded dual piston calipers around 13 inch rotors. And keeping all this thoroughbred hardware rolling down the road is a handsome set of 18 inch and 19 inch polished aluminum wheels which wear Michelin rubber. Inside, this Viper features a fresh black interior that places an emphasis on simplicity and performance above all else. The leather and suede bucket seats are so comfortable that Dodge actually licensed their design as an office chair. In front of the seats a large dash, holds clear white-face gauges above a crystal clear 6-disk CD changer; and between the seats, a chrome shifter holds a leather shift knob above buttons for the car's power windows and a leather wrapped emergency brake handle. Below the seats, Viper logo floor mats protect like-new carpet. Connecting the driver to the road is a nice leather wrapped, three spoke steering wheel. And behind the cockpit, the fully finished trunk is all business with a jack, a compact spare tire and just enough space to store a couple of car show chairs.
