Unfortunately for me, and fortunately for you, I change my car every year historically, and it’s time to move on… Having owned cars from the e36 M3, to the e46 M3, to the e39 M5, to my prior car, a ‘12 Shelby GT500, it’s safe to say that the e92 M3 has been my favorite car to date. Not as raw as the e36, nor as brutal as the Shelby, but superior balance and well-rounded character. A surgical instrument if you will. If you’re a true aficionado of cars, and an experienced driver, then you’ve found the last stop in your car shop. Cost If you’re looking for the cheapest deal around, then move along to the next ad, because this isn’t it, for good reason. But before you skitter along to a lesser M3, keep in mind that, especially with pre-owned luxury vehicles, you get what you pay for. Even if that difference is only a couple of thousand. As for financing, you may already know, the problem with banks and private sales is that the lender wants the seller to be responsible for recording their lien on the title, and they can't count on private sellers doing so. Therefore, approval or even consideration is unlikely! BUT… Fantastic News: Just today, I found a cost-effective way for you to FINANCE this car, even though it’s technically a private sale. Craig at Exotic Classics in Syosset, NY has agreed to sell her through consignment at his dealership for a nominal fee of $1500 plus small DMV processing fees, to be covered by the buyer. So no lump sum needed, and you can go through the bank of your choice! Maintenance is the #1 cost factor in all BMW's not under warranty, especially pre-owned performance models, like the M cars. CPO Warranty = gold when buying a BMW. Rest assured, buying an which hasn’t been maintained as well as mine will cost you more in repairs within a few short months, and tons more over a couple years, even though you think you’re getting a better deal up front. I learned this lesson the hard way when I owned my e36 M3 and e39 M5 a few years ago. Never again will I own a BMW that hasn’t been fully sorted out beforehand, nor one that is not under warranty. And mine is as sorted as they come – I test-drove five M3’s before deciding on this one, and they didn’t feel nearly as strong (engine) or as solid (chassis). There is not a single squeak or rattle, and she accelerates like a jet plane on takeoff. You are getting a fully transferable certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty with this vehicle! What this means is that for 6 years or 100k miles (whichever comes first), your CPO M3 is fully covered bumper to bumper by BMW, and you simply drive it to the nearest dealership if something were to go wrong. This includes FREE maintenance until 2015 and full coverage until 2017. This doesn’t include wearable items like tires, but it covers all the required oil changes (which run over $200 for an M3) and inspections. This is greater than or equal to the coverage that you would get if buying a NEW BMW, even factoring in the year that I’ve owned her!!! You will no doubt make up the extra money put into the car up front within your first two years of ownership. Ask any long-term BMW owner and they will agree. Don’t fall into the ‘noob’ trap and buy a money-pit! Vehicles depreciate enough as it is without sucking your wallet completely dry. Another thing you have to think about when calculating a realistic car budget is the insurance rate. I’ve dived into purchases in the past before really checking, and the insurance company bent me over before I realized what I had done. Prior to this M3, I owned an e46 M3 with competition package and an e36 M3 Sedan, and believe it or not, the running costs of the e92 were the lowest of the three, when you factor in insurance and maintenance, which for the e92 is a pittance for what you’re driving! Please do yourself a favor and do your research beforehand. History A BMW-owned (California) car by origin, I am really the first owner on the title even though I purchased her pre-owned. As I said above, I chose this particular M3 after an extensive search, purchasing her a year ago at Paul Miller BMW in NJ. I put mostly highway miles on her this past year on excursions out of the city (Virginia, upstate NY, NJ, CT, PA), and she has been Rock Solid. For the last year she was protected in a heated ventilated garage, and not driven during inclement weather. I didn’t take her out in the winter at all, leaving the dirty work to my WRX. She has not been parked on the street and the only markings on the body are the usual highway chips on the front bumper that you would come to expect on a highway vehicle. ALL necessary inspections, services and maintenance are up to date and this car is a true gem! I test drove five other e92 M3s before settling on this one, and if you’ve had the pleasure of doing likewise, you’ll already know that every pre-owned M3 feels different once you get behind the wheel. Some feel tired, squirmy, squeaky or even sluggish, while others, like this one, feel vault-Like, tight and responsive. After only a couple miles in her, I was sold, and I drove her home the same day I tested her, without having to think any further. When you know you know. She ran like a dream on that first trip, and has been super-reliable, not to mention exciting as hell, ever since. With this e92 M3 you get so much car for the money it’s stupid. An $80,000 460bhp (Yes, you read that right, with the mods, 10% above stock numbers!) top-of-the-line monster for the price of an optioned 335 is laughable, and only in the good ol’ US of A do such deals exist, so let us all count our blessings! Plus, with the tasteful, functional and REVERSIBLE modifications I have made, running me upwards of another $10,000, this particular M3 will easily out-perform a stock model, not to mention most other cars out there on the road. Sadly, the e92 M3 may be the last true M-car, the last Mohican of a dying breed. It’s a shame that governmental regulations are pushing naturally aspirated, race-derived engines into the halls of history, but turbo-charging is that way of the future, and present it would seem. The mechanical cacophony of the engine sounds, the predictability of the throttle response, and the race heritage behind every goose of the gas and roar of the V8… will be no more. My original plan was to keep her, turn her into a dedicated track car as I moved on to modifying my next road car, but my baby arriving in two months squashed that plan! Anyhow, as I was saying, this last true non-turbocharged V8 M-car is a collector’s item of sorts, since she’s the last naturally aspirated race-derived M. Cnet summed it up nicely: “My car for the training may just be the last of its breed. The E92 BMW M3 is a naturally aspirated monster of a car; 414 bhp falls out of its 4.0-litre V8 and pushes it from 0-62 mph in just 4.6 seconds. The noise it kicks out is mechanical, raw, and guttural -- it's bordering on antisocial. The M3 still cuts a fine figure six years after its initial launch. As I'd later discover, it's also quite mad, a little like a chap in a Saville Row suit hiding a knuckle duster in his pocket and a dragon tattoo on his back.” Cnet.com continues: “The M3 is incredible - it's punishingly fast and unbelievably capable. Way more than I am, in fact. Should my fat feet fall a little too keenly, the car's electronic brain takes over, keeps everything in check and allowing me to continue until the next cock up. I'm man enough to admit that I'm no driving deity and that traction control light is the kind of safety net I enjoy. Each time it flashes, it's like a parent telling me it's "not angry, but disappointed" and letting me on my way. We both know I'm going to do something stupid again, mind you. The M3's power delivery is smooth, linear, crisp even. Shoving your foot as far as it'll go feels like you've been shot out of a rubber-band gun - there's elegance to its acceleration and momentum that other cars, the Audi RS4 included, simply don't have… The E92, though, is liable to be the last naturally aspirated M car… The purity of the mechanical engine notes that previously fell out of the M3, I fear, will be gone. It'll be replaced by a straight six with two whacking turbos on it… The opportunity to thrash the last of a kind was then, obviously, not one to be missed.” Performance Since this M3 was to be tracked she underwent several performance modifications to improve handling, acceleration, braking, and to reduce the factory understeer, which was engineered into the car for safety reasons. The skill level of most drivers simply cannot contend with 400+ rampaging horses, and correctly dialed-in, understeer provides appropriate and necessary feedback, clueing the less experienced driver in, so that they can ‘back-off’ once the vehicle starts ‘pushing’ in corners. The pucker factor induces throttle lift, which causes oversteer, rotating the car safely for the soiled ones. But for high performance driving, understeer really limits you and the true abilities of your vehicle cannot be fully unlocked. If the nose car turn in better, then you can use throttle induced oversteer to rotate the vehicle, pre-emptively striking against the centripetal forces and inertia acting against you. So, to maximize the performance and handling of this M3 the following work was done by ASE Master Mechanic Marc Albert of Marc Motors in Madison, NJ. Please feel free to contact him if you have any questions, as he is fully knowledgeable as to the care and thought that went into upgrading this vehicle! KW lowering springs that function in conjunction with the stock EDC brought the car down about an inch, improving center of gravity while removing the unsightly wheel-well gap. H&R sway bars replaced the smaller stock units, flattening body roll. Turner motorsports spacers widened the stance, and completed the filling of the wheel wells. Vorshlag Front Camber/Caster Plates brought the front camber to approximately -3.0 and the rear to -2.0. Wheel studs replaced the wheel lug bolts to facilitate easier removal and installation of wheels and tires. The stance and suspension changes are subtle, but noticeably more aggressive to the trained eye. With the custom alignment, I did not notice extra tramlining, as one may be lead to expect. Steering is non-jittery and on-center feel is solid. No undue tire wear has resulted and in fact it tire wear has improved, since more of the front rubber was being used to turn the car. I refreshed the tires last fall, at the end of the season to Michelin Pilot Supersports and they have plenty of tread left. With these modifications, and the reduction of body roll and understeer, the car can now ‘rotate’ much more easily through turns. More throttle can be used to induce oversteer and rotation, advanced techniques that are incredibly rewarding and fun. She’s still fully predictable, turn-in is crisp, and the ‘push’ common to stock M3’s is all but gone! I retained the stock EDC shocks since they are high quality and expensive components allowing adjustability in ride handling from comfort to track. It was very important to me that I retain the famous BMW compliance over bumps and ruts, as you want to have a car that isn’t always overly stiff, retaining comfort for long slogs and road-trips. To facilitate left foot braking and better weight transfer during high performance driving, I had a pedal set fabricated by Ultimate Pedals, and Installed by Marc Motors. The brake pedal is extended, as a distance proximal enough to the dead pedal that you don’t have to strain or waste time reaching for the brake with the left foot. A simple heel pivot does the trick! The throttle medal is matching, and both are milled from billet aluminum. I have the original pedals if you wish to revert to stock. It’s another well-known fact that the e92 brakes are a weak point. Not any more. I replaced the stock calipers, rotors, and pads with a high-performance Big Brake Kit by Stoptech. Designed specifically for the e92 M3, this SLOTTED ST-60 / ST-40 BBK measuring 380mm up front, and 355mm in the rear - is awesome! To rein in the power and speed this beast produces, you MUST have good stopping power. Not only do they perform, but they also look the part, and really complete the aesthetics of the M3, with the pizza-sized rotors and bright red calipers. Show and go. These brakes have less than 1k miles on them and have never been tracked. On the street, she stops on a dime. I added the Cantrell Brake Duct kit to keep brake temperatures low on track, prior to installing the BBK. Even without the BBK, with the use of Stoptech performance pads, the brake ducting really does keep fade at bay! Once the handling and braking improved, the car could handle more power, reining it in better with the chassis set-up. So I went to Autocoutre Motoring in Fair Lawn NJ, where I had ACM test pipes and an ESS tune installed. This adds up to 40 horsepower at the wheels in combination with the Meisterschaft GT2 cat-back exhaust and cat-delete. The ESS tune codes out any faults, and I easily passed the NYS emissions test last December. But this modification, just like the rest, is fully reversible for about $150 at ACM, and I may even have it performed should the buyer request it. At the reigns lies a beautiful Alcantara wrapped BMW performance flat-bottom steering wheel. She came with this from the dealer, an $800 part, and it feels brand new. I used driving gloves most of the time, to preserve the suede-like feel for you! I must make a note here for the ‘fraidy cats, that even though this M3 did see some track time (8 events), she has not been thrashed or abused. She has been fully inspected both before and after each even by a master mechanic, the fluids have been changed much more frequently than other normal M3s, and I myself am a babier of vehicles, even though I do drive them responsibly and respectfully fast, as they’re designed for, but well under the limits of their abilities, and closer to the limits of mine! Not once did the engine temperature jump above normal operating range on track, and not once did she burn off any extra oil. In the year that I’ve owner her I’ve added ½ quart! If you know M-cars, this is an absurdly low amount of oil, as these cars are renowned as oil-guzzlers. Consider this fine example track-tested, with an A+ passing grade of performance, durability, and reliability. Also consider that many M-cars that are not opened up enough, not driven on highways, or driven too hard when cold develop engine flaws and defects far more serious that those in M-cars which are driven the way they’re meant to be driven, and proven their worth. Again, I replaced the tires with Michelin Pilot Supersports at the end of last year, and I am religious about checking tire pressure every week, not to mention the oil levels, which have not changed since I’ve owned her. Many M3s you will encounter are thirsty for oil, and an example like this – that burns NONE – is hard to come by in the pre-owned market! Excitement Allow me to comment here on the soundtrack of this M3. I chuckle out loud each and every time she revs over 3k. The bark out of her is ferocious, but not obnoxious. As loud as you want to be, quiet at idle, all the way up to crap-in-your-britches-if-you’re-an-innocent-bystander loud, when you open her up! Not intrusive when the windows are up though, and no annoying highway drone. Email me for some sample video footage. The first thing I changed was the exhaust, as I firmly believe that a V8 should be allowed to breathe properly and be heard! I was looking for loud, throaty and exotic. The Meisterschaft GT2 cat-back exhaust is designed for racing, but has a controlled, quality sound, not raspy nor drony. The X-pipe modification has a tendency to develop rasp at certain RPM ranges, and I didn’t want to hear any high frequency noise, so I skipped it. After the ACM test pipes went in, and the ESS tune was uploaded, the result was incredible, and I immediately fell in love with the sound – I thought I’d never get over the sound of the GT500, but this fit the bill, only in a more expensive exotic crazy kinda way. Any car enthusiast who has had the honor of hearing this beast’s throttle fully open is shocked as the quality and depth of the V8 roar. You can recognize the race-bred staccato of this F-1 inspired engine when she revs, yet she is completely docile and livable when you’re not ‘on it’! Do not buy this car if you’re looking for a sleeper. She’s an extrovert looking for attention. Which brings me to the Valentine One! What an amazing radar / laser detector. I’ve owned several, but this one sees the fuzz even AROUND turns and over hills, up to a mile away!!! It is simply amazing, and 100% accurate. The unit is hardwired and concealed inside the roof-liner and the controller is hidden inside the rearview mirror, placing the read-out of the radar detector right in front of you but out of sight. Not that you’d be doing anything illegal, of course. Even though this M3 begs you to go faster, the funny thing is, I actually rarely surpass the posted speed limit. Seriously. Something about knowing that you have 460 horses beneath your right foot, to use at will, actually has a calming effect. As does track driving. You no longer have something to prove. It could just be old age too… But knowing that you’re cruising comfortably in a top-of-the-line ultimate driving machine is enough to keep the grin on your mug regardless of whether you’re doing single, double or triple-digit velocities. This car FEELS fast at any speed. Aesthetics The very first upgrade I made to her was switching out the old-fashioned yellow incandescent halo angel eyes for super-bright white HID Angel Eyes by Alpine MSS. I had these installed professionally by Stefano and team at Auto Design NYC in Chelsea. They did a bang up job, so I also had the Valentine One hardwired and concealed by them. The install for both was over $1k, but the work is unparalleled and looks and behaves like factory. The HID angel eyes are even brighter that newer BMWs, and are powerful enough to illuminate parking lots at nighttime. They don’t really come out to well in photos because they’re so bright. Tom Kovach runs his Art of Tint business out of several locations, one of them being Auto Design NYC. I had two previous vehicles tinted by Tom at his Brooklyn location, and I had this M3 tinted by him in Manhattan. He is a true professional and specialist at what he does and I had him put the finest ceramic tint (a legal 35% on the side and rear windows). If you’ve ever attempted tinting a BMW, you know by now that the annoying dots surrounding the perimeter of the door windows and the rear glass are difficult for tinters to negotiate, and they often cause bubbles and other deformations in the tint film. Tom has a secret technique that bonds the tint beautifully around these stupid dots, leaving nary a bubble! A small detail, but an important one! Carbon. It just sounds cool. And it looks even cooler. Contrasting against the Alpine White paint, the carbon bits look amazing. When I bought her she came with the Carbon roof, mirror covers, front splitters, and trunk spoiler. I added the rear diffuser when I had the exhaust installed. The carbon BMW license plate bracket on the rear finishes off the look nicely. Pull up to your next Black & White party in true style. And don’t forget to don the included free BMW-brand M-logo B&W T-shirt to complete the douchiness! I listed the wheel spacers above under performance, but I really added them to widen out the stance and fill out the fugly fender gaps in the wheel wells. European carmakers are required by law to leave a certain amount of fender gap, so that snow chains can be used. Good for winters, bad for the look of your M3. I tried Macht Schnell spacers and H&R spacers before settling on 20mm & 15mm Turner Motorsports spacers front and rear. The others vibrated and were difficult to remove, but the TMS spacers are solid at any speed while providing the desired wider stance. These were removed for track duty, and they do not cause any rubbing front or rear. Practicality On to the boring stuff we with kids actually think about. Practicality and performance are two major reasons for buying this car. This M3 is practical. Perhaps the most practical high performance sports car on the market. Huge trunk, and fold-down rear seats with pass through. Plenty of rear passenger legroom – actually, just as much legroom as some sedans I’ve ridden in. Two adults comfortably occupy the rear. My son much preferred the spacious back seat to that of the cramped GT500. On trips upstate I get 24 MPG. Around town in mixed driving and even in heavy traffic I average around 18 MPG. For a 4.6sec 0-60 race-bred sports car with 460bhp, this is PHENOMENAL! I typically get greater than 300 miles from a full tank of 93-octane gas. But if you’re really worried about fuel economy, then why the hell have you read this far already?! A great highway cruiser and compliant around town, she’s a very usable machine begging to be driven more than I can drive her now. The cold weather package will keep your buns toasty with heated seats, and your headlights clean with washer sprays. The premium package includes the much nicer Nappa leather interior; with durable sport bucket seats that show no signs of wear and provide adjustable lumbar, thigh and lateral support. These are some of the most comfortable seats in any car. They are fully supportive, so you can drive all day in comfort. The dash and center console are spotless. The carpets are clean and it is smoke-free. The DCT clutch is truly a wonder to experience. Every other car before this that I owned was a manual, so I was a bit hesitant to go the ‘auto’ route at first. But for high performance driving, or simple laziness around town, the DCT cannot be beaten! Why do you think Ferrari doesn’t even offer sticks any more? They just can’t keep up! The DCT engages smoothly and immediately, and it feels as strong and as crisp as new – she is a pleasure to shift each and every time, and the speed of the shift must be experienced to be believed. The hill start assist comes in handy, as does the adjustability in the speed and comfort of the shifts. Level 1 up to the hidden Level 6 means slower more compliant shifts all the way up to machine gun shift speeds! The blips on downshift are a special treat, and I find myself doing it superfluously in tunnels and under overpasses just to hear the exhaust bark and bubble. Or to make innocent passers-by jump! Conclusion At BMW of Manhattan, where I routinely have her detailed – the service technicians are always amazed at the condition she’s in! I have the oil changed with BMW fully synthetic every 3k miles. Oil changes can be done more frequently, depending on your driving habits, but are not mandatory according to BMW, and therefore not covered by the service warranty. The regularly scheduled oil changes are covered. BMW and Carfax.com have the complete service history, and I have receipts for every penny I’ve spent. Some minor dents in the body paneling have been removed (paintless), as I am a fanatic about detail. Nobody else even noticed them. Other drawbacks? A small scratch exists on the driver side rear wheel, but it is barely noticeable and wasn’t enough to chip the black paint. Otherwise, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this M3 - she drives straight as an arrow and stops on a dime. No wrecks, no dings, no dents, no paintwork, no squeaks, no rattles, no oil consumption, no engine clatter or vibrations - no surprises, no worries! Just a solid piece of German-engineered machinery. Since I’ve owned her, she’s been parked off-street in a parking garage in Manhattan when used into the city, or in a heated garage in Greenwich, CT during the colder months. Everything else checks out A-OK, nothing otherwise worn, or in need of replacement. She has been hand-washed at least every other week, or when dirty. I’ve had her computer aligned twice now to ensure proper wear and tracking. The title is clean and there is no salvage history or flooding to worry about. Again, there is no catch - this is simply the nicest, cleanest, best-modified e92 M3 you will find at this price point, period. Steer clear of lesser cars that will drain your wallet in the long run!! I’ve rarely revved the engine past 4k rpm in normal everyday use, which is where it really comes alive, save for the occasional sprint through the Battery Tunnel or on the Van Wyke International Speedway, and the HPDE events last year. Running at full-bore is what this machine is designed for, and unless you exercise the engine every so often, she'll actually not function optimally. Again, even though her legs were stretched, this car was not raced or abused, nor driven recklessly. Smoothness is key on the track, and she has proven herself to be rock-solid and reliable. The oil color and level didn't even degrade, but it was changed before and after each event regardless. The exotic European growl from the famous (and now out-of production) 4.0L V8 is euphoric, and it doesn’t even demand irrational speeds to be enjoyed! Speed comes on linearly as revs build, and the car reacts telepathically to every steering input you make, or think about making! Folks, this is one of the BEST chassis designs, period, and one of the best-ever engines, period, of ANY road-going vehicle ever produced. If I had the means, I’d sure as hell keep her as a collectible – and that was my original plan! Again, this M3 feels stronger than other M3s I’ve driven (including the other five I drove before deciding on this one), and WAY stronger than my e36 M3 and e46 M3. I also owned the e39 M5 beforehand, and the Shelby GT500, but they were pigs compared to this M3. I feel that the modifications made truly complement and enhance this car, but if needs be I may still revert her to stock and part her out. Please no inquiries or dibs on the parts just yet; I will post them for sale here if that’s the route I decide to take. Maybe it’s just me, but the newer BMWs seem to have lost their racy edge, and they are boring me. The last true M-car has the best blend of primal power and practical features, along with the lowest running costs and insurance rates. She feels more ‘solid’, more ‘racy’, more ‘raw’ - and the controls, especially the throttle, feel much more responsive than any turbo car will ever display. Here, you have a chance here to own a piece of motorsport history! Buy newer, buy boring and buy more expensive… and EAT the depreciation! This M3 was simply the best choice when I decided on a car, and she would still be my first choice if I were to do it over again. Straight from a dealer, any certified pre-owned BMW you encounter; you won’t find one that has all the wrinkles ironed out like this has. No Squeaks, no rattles, no worries, no surprises!! If you’re serious about purchasing this car, you are welcome to come examine her in Greenwich, CT. I baby her, and I hope to pass her along to somebody who’ll treat her equally as well! I personally have never bought sight-unseen, but with this vehicle you can trust that it is as I have described. Upon payment of a deposit, I will be happy to bring her to a convenient location for a PPI. I sold my 2002 Firehawk, my 1998 e36 M3, and my 2005 e46 M3 all through Ebay with no hassles, and I have an excellent 100% positive feedback rating. I will work with you to arrange shipping, and I can also pick you up from JFK, LaGuardia or Newark if you want to fly in and drive her home. As far as payment goes, I accept wire transfer, Certified/Bank check, cash in person, or consignment through Exotic Classics as described above. Paypal can be used for the deposit to hold her. IMPORTANT: due to countless scammers out there now, we will have to wait until the funds clear on my end before I will release the keys and sign off on the title. This vehicle is being sold as is. I have made a diligent effort to accurately describe and photograph the vehicle. I have many more photos if the ones presented don’t show something you’re looking for. Your key is waiting.
