In the hills, both S-classers drive alike — same aloof and steely persona. Not hugely involving. In a straight line, though, they're as different as Warren Harding and Warren Beatty. The S600 blasts to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Know what that means? To 60 mph, this 2.5-ton Teuton is quicker than: 1. A Porsche 911 Carrera S. 2. A Chevrolet Corvette convertible. 3. A Ferrari 612 Scaglietti F1. The S600 whooshes through the quarter-mile in 12.6 seconds, same as a Lamborghini Murciélago. This big Benz's twin-turbo V-12 manufactures 612 pound-feet of torque as low as 1800 rpm. We once nailed the throttle just as Colwell tried to open the glove box. His arms flailed and thrashed at cabin air, and it wasn't until the Benz had attained another 60 or so digits that he was able to lean far enough forward to effect any dashboard operations. Our shark-gray Merc asked for only 2.7 seconds to transform 50 mph into 70 mph. On two-lane highways, we learned not to floor the throttle until we were in the passing lane. Otherwise, this heavy destroyer was too likely to ram whoever was being overtaken. Here's something else that'll amuse and panic your passengers: Set the Distronic Plus proximity cruise control for 120 mph while following, say, a dawdling Ford F-150, then lift your foot completely off the gas. Later, when you pull out to pass, the S600 will automatically proceed to a buck-twenty entirely on its own, as if possessed by the ghost of René Dreyfus, and no red lights or Klaxons or legal warnings will so much as suggest themselves. All of this is accompanied by neither turbo lag nor vibration nor exhaust roar. At every driver swap, we had to glance at the tach to tell whether the V-12 was even reciprocating. Our "base" S600 was fitted with all the electronics known to German engineers and a few known only to Homeland Security, and the desirable active body control that cost $3900 on the S550 is here standard. Not to mention brake lights that flash furiously during panic stops and a right-rear seat with eight power comfort adjustments, plus a ninth that automatically slides the right-front seat forward to keep it clear of one's costly monkey-paw loafers, and pneumatic bolsters that stiffen during cornering so you don't have to expend any unnecessary energy holding your own torso erect, God forbid. Did we mention that, during a 70-mph panic stop, the S600 requires only 12 more inches of tarmac than a Mazda RX-8? Compared with the Rolls, this Mercedes resembles some sort of J.C. Penney "Discount Daze" bargain. For the price of our Phantom, you could buy an S600, all seven sedans in last month's "Cheap Skates" comparo, and more than 14 months' worth of luxury lodging at the Drake in Chicago. After which, the parking valets will likely give you one of their handmade Russian Army coats, which, we are here to tell you, affect women in a warm and memorable way. Last February, we called the S550 "the best S-class ever," but now the S600 is the best S-class ever. , making it the best S-class ever, causing some of us to ask, "Why?" This car is already all arrogance and attitude, and every vehicle impeding its progress evokes that German descriptor "Backpfeifengesicht," which means "the face that cries out for a fist in it." An infrared-sensitive camera on the inside of the windscreen shows the scene ahead of the vehicle on a display in the instrument cluster of the luxury Coupé, enabling road signs, pedestrians, cyclists, debris or other obstacles in the road to be identified much sooner. When night view assist is active, the infrared headlamps are automatically switched on when a speed of 15 km/h is reached and remain on when braking down to about 10 km/h. As soon as night view assist is activated, the display in the centre of the instrument cluster switches over to show the camera image. The large eight-inch display is directly in the driver’s field of vision, and provides a clear greyscale image of the road ahead. The driver is able to glance down at the infrared image regularly, monitor the situation ahead of the vehicle and adapt his style of driving accordingly. Up to 125 percent increase in safety Mercedes engineers have examined the capabilities of this technology in a series of practical trials. During comparative test drives with low-beam bi-xenon headlamps and the new night view assist system, male and female test drivers recognised obstacles in the road much sooner when assisted by the infrared light system. During tests, drivers were already able to discern test dummies at the roadside dressed in light-coloured clothing at a range of around 210 metres, which is about 41 metres sooner than with low-beam bi-xenon headlamps. The system proves even more effective in the case of pedestrians in dark clothing. In these situations the night view assist system already enabled the drivers to identify the test dummies at a range of around 164 metres, compared with only at about 72 metres when driving with low-beam bi-xenon headlamps alone. This represents a safety improvement of no less than 125 percent. Even when the headlamps of oncoming vehicles dazzle the driver and severely obscure the view, visibility is much better with this assistance system: a test dummy in light-coloured clothing standing at the road edge 50 metres behind an oncoming vehicle was detected from an average distance of 140 metres with the help of night view assist – around 53 metres sooner than with low-beam bi-xenon headlamps. The state-of-the-art CMOS sensor (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) and the infrared camera specially developed for Mercedes-Benz are able to reduce dazzle by electronic means, while enhancing the rest of the image to ensure that even smaller details are easily recognised. Important contribution to safer driving in the dark Night view assist is able to contribute greatly to improved road safety, as accident analyses carried out by Mercedes-Benz have confirmed: on the basis of data obtained from a joint accident research project conducted by German vehicle manufacturers and the federal office for roads and traffic, specialists at Mercedes-Benz analysed accidents occurring during the hours of darkness and found that the night view assist system has a very high safety potential. The risk of serious injury in road traffic is much greater in twilight and in the dark than during daylight hours. Collisions at night are predominantly driver-induced accidents during which drivers lose control of their vehicles – often because they have not recognised the course of the road soon enough in the dark, and failed to adjust their speed. As a result around half of the vehicles in question leave the road, while more than one quarter collides with oncoming traffic. Night view assist can also help to improve the safety of pedestrians. Track your service history for free at myCARFAX.com. ------------------------------------------ MOTOTREND 2011 V12 S CLASS While listening to a radio program about American Sign Language (ASL) from behind the wheel of a 2013 Mercedes-Benz S65 AMG in rush-hour traffic, I learned that facial expressions are an integral part of ASL. I wondered how a hearing-impaired person would've interpreted my face earlier in the day, when I first experienced the 5097-pound S65 AMG run from 0-60 mph in just a tad over 4 seconds. Or when I compared the S65's $230,265 window sticker to the $178,185 one on its slightly tamer V-12-powered sibling, the S600. Both left me with a facial expression that could be described as dramatic and slightly insane. And those two adjectives pretty much sum up our thoughts on the S65 AMG and S600 following their weeks-long stays at our office. In the past, we sampled the 429-hp twin-turbo V-8 in the volume-leading S550 and the torquey turbodiesel V-6 in the S350 and found both powertrains to be more than adequate. Does the S-Class need a 12-cylinder? Not at all. But after driving these V-12 beasts, it's hard to imagine the S-Class being powered any other way. Performance wise, the cars weren't too far apart in a straight line, despite the S65's power advantage. The S600's 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-12, rated at 520-hp and 622 lb-ft, propelled the 5029-pound sedan from 0-60 mph in just 4.1 seconds, and it completed the quarter mile in 12.4 seconds at 118.9 mph. The S65 AMG and its 6.0-liter, hand-built, twin-turbo V-12, which produces 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, posted a 0-60 mph run of 4.4 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 12.4 seconds at 120.1 mph. Incidentally, the latter figure tied the S63 AMG we tested last summer. Both cars are mated to a five-speed automatic -- the only gearbox Mercedes has that's stout enough to handle all the power -- with the S65's tweaked by AMG to shift a tad faster. Surprisingly, the S600 and S65 AMG were tied on the skidpad (0.87 g) and the figure eight, with both cars posting a time of 26.1 seconds at 0.73 g. The S600 needed just 109 feet when stopping from 60 mph, 2 fewer feet than the S65, which is fitted with brakes that are bigger and perforated. What gives? Performance similarities aside, these two S-Classes have very distinct personalities. The S600 is the understated wallflower, with nothing more than a few "V-12" badges on its front fenders and unique exhaust pipes and rims to set it apart from more pedestrian S-Classes. It's extremely quiet, too, whether it's idling or at wide open throttle. At times, I caught myself moving my jaw around to make sure my ears weren't clogged. To make things even fancier, our S600 tester's optional Designo interior package, with its taupe leather, polished burl walnut trim, and chrome accents, appears to have been pulled from an opulent Art Deco mansion in Beverly Hills. The S65 AMG, on the other hand, has the rowdiness you expect for a car from Affalterbach, with its outspoken exhaust note growling either loudly or very loudly. A few staffers argued that the S65 is way too noisy, We also preferred the S600's steering feel over that of the S65, which was slightly overboosted. Out in public, the S65 AMG was an absolute head-turner. In addition to its signature AMG quad exhaust tips, body kit, and five-spoke rims, this S65 was painted with a special shade dubbed Designo Magno Platinum -- aka gunmetal gray metallic -- with a matte finish, a combination that adds $3950 to the sticker price. Even flashier, especially for a S-Class, was the Designo interior, which featured seats and door panels wrapped in gorgeous brown diamond-stitched leather, while everything else from the roofliner to the dashboard was covered in either black leather or Alcantara. As expected, both cars are packed with technology and interior goodies. Passengers are protected by safety features including Active Blind Spot assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Benz's Distronic adaptive cruise control system. Both cars also have a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system, rear DVD entertainment system, and massaging seats for every passenger except the person sitting in the middle back seat. While we usually love all things sporting an AMG badge, it's hard to overlook at what the S600 brings to the table. With a price tag that's at least $50,000 less than the S65, the S600 matches its rowdy AMG's performance, better braking, equipment list, and V-12 exclusivity. Unless you really want to hear that growl or feel the need to flash, it's the 12-pot S-Class to get. The S65 is only moderately faster, but screams mid life crisis with all the go fast looking bolt ons. This impressive picture is completed by smoothness and outstanding vibrational behaviour. These qualities are inherent design features of the new V12 engine: the V-angle of 60 degrees balances inertia forces and moments at source, without the need for special balancer shafts. The modern "bedplate" design makes another major contribution to particularly smooth, lownoise operation: the "bedplate" consists of an luminium plate with integral cast iron bearing brackets on the main crankshaft bearings for additional rigidity. This effectively reduces longitudinal vibrations in the engine block. In addition, the sump has been isolated from the crankcase as a vibration-reducing measure. The crankcase of the new "Type 12" engine is of die cast aluminium, while the two cylinder head covers are of die cast magnesium and the cylinder liners are made from a lightweight, low-friction aluminium-silicon alloy which allows a weight-saving of approx. 500 grams per cylinder versus conventional cast iron liners. Other lightweight components of the twelve-cylinder engine include fracture-split conrods made from high-strength, forged-steel alloys; oil-spray cooled pistons made from a highquality aluminium alloy; hollow camshafts of induction hardened, forged steel; a weight-optimised, forged steel crankshaft and a sump of die cast aluminium. Thanks to this advanced lightweight design, the power unit tips the scales at just 270 kilograms, achieving a power to weight ratio of 0.66 kg/kW. A camshaft in each of the two banks of cylinders controls the three valves per cylinder via lowfriction roller-type cam followers. Each valve has a cam follower and is adjusted hydraulically. The three-valve technology reduces thermal losses at the exhaust stage and speeds catalytic converter warm-up after a cold start. In conjunction with two large ceramic catalytic converters positioned close to the engine, this has a decisive influence on ensuring that the new Maybach reliably complies with the strict EU-4 limits. Emissions are controlled by two catalytic converters which are arranged close to the engine and each contain two ceramic monoliths. The two intake valves per cylinder have a diameter of 31 millimetres, hile the sodium-cooled exhaust valve measures 33 millimetres. The developers of the Type 12 engine were able to dispense with the camshaft adjustment system. The twin turbochargers aspirate the twelve-cylinder efficiently. Expressed in figures: 622 Nm of torque are already on tap at 1500 rpm, the 800 Nm mark is reached at 1800 rpm and from 2300 rpm the power unit generates its torque of 900 Nm, a figure which is unique among series-production passenger cars. It maintains this up to 3000 rpm. The V12 engine's maximum output of 405 kW/550 bhp is available at 5250 rpm. The positioning of the twin turbocharger turbines in the exhaust manifold maximises their efficiency. A wastegate control system enables the flow of exhaust gases to the turbines to be matched to the current operating point of the engine. Wastegate valves are integrated into each turbocharger and operate electro-pneumatically. The compressed air flows from the turbochargers through two engine-mounted watercooled intercoolers located on the cylinder head covers. Depending on the engine load, the air is cooled here by up to 100 C. The water-intercoolers are part of a special low-temperature circuit. A demand-controlled, electric circulation pump transfers the heat between the water-intercoolers and the low-temperature cooler located in front of the engine, which passes the heat from the water to the cooling air. A microprocessor controls all engine functions, making use of various additional sensor data to control the two turbochargers: Pressure and temperature sensors in the charge air distributor are used to calculate the intake air mass. A sensor in front of the throttle valve adjusting motor registers the charge pressure. Sensors upstream and downstream of the air filter monitor the pressure on the clean air side so that the speed of the turbochargers can always be adjusted to suit the situation. In addition, the engine computer controls an advanced alternating current twin-spark ignition system whose feature is constant ionic current measurement at the spark plugs. This recognises any misfires and therefore has a major role in protecting the catalytic converters. Should the ionic current fall below a certain value, the fuel injection for the cylinder concerned is automatically interrupted at once. Ionic current measurement is supplemented with torsional vibration analysis at the crankshaft. By combining both control signals in this way, the developers of the Type 12 engine have achieved an unprecedented degree of accuracy in the detection of misfires right across the entire load and engine speed range. At the ragged edge, though, this ragtop loses its poise a bit, getting a little squirrelly. After the skidpad test—in which the 650i scored an impressive 0.89 g—our test driver called it a “drift machine.” A 167-foot stop from 70 mph also nurses courage, as does the brake pedal’s firm, predictable feel. Its travel might be long for some, but it’s hard to fault BMW for making the brakes easy to modulate. Chasing AudiIt’s also difficult to find fault with the 650i’s rakish new skin or its step-above interior. The car tested here had $4,850 in interior upgrades—$3500 for stitched-leather trim and $1,300 ventilated front seats; $650 for ceramic rings on the radio, HVAC, and iDrive controls—that we heartily endorse. This cabin design surpasses almost any recent BMW’s and challenges some of Audi’s better designs of late, although violent cowl shake will test the fortitude of its adhesives as the years pass. This convertible might have only two doors, but at 192.8 inches long, the 6-series is a large car, and there is a large piece of cloth where once there was far-more-rigid metal.Like most modern luxury convertibles, the 650i allows the driver to raise and lower the top while in motion. This can be done at speeds up to 25 mph, meaning you can cruise the boulevard all night with the top waving at passersby, but any owner with any sense of mechanical sympathy is going to do this only once or twice. With the top stowed, we easily hefted two half-barrels into the back seat. Be careful setting those kegs on the light-tan leather, though. We swaddled our babies in blankets to keep smudges off the seats and belts.</p><p style="font-size: 12px;">What the 650i will haul more often than kegs is keister. Just 4.5 seconds pass between standstill and 60 mph, with 11 stopwatch ticks separating stationary from triple digits and 12.9 between the Christmas tree and a trap speed of 115 mph. BMW’s brilliant twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 bellows less boisterously here than in the X5 and X6, but we suppose that makes sense. The X6 in particular is a far more insane concept than the 650i—really, who thought BMW needed a 400-hp off-road “coupe”?—and insanity feeds on savagery.</p><p style="font-size: 12px;"><b>I’m Kind of a Big Deal</b></p><p style="font-size: 12px;">Eventually, BMW will sell its lauded straight-six beneath the long hood of the 6-series in the U.S., but what’s the point of flaunting your existence in a $90,000-plus convertible if you don’t have the biggest, baddest engine? Actually, with the six, it might be a $75,000 or so convertible, which isn’t going to make nearly the impression on those people who refuse to look at you at stoplights. Well-balanced proportions and graceful surface detailing give the convertible an understated yet subtly muscular look that will likely still look fresh 20 years down the line. <span><br></span></p><p>Simplicity of design and opulence of material quality are the defining characteristics of the interior. We found these suspension options turn a Boulevard GT cruiser into a 911 fighter. Rare and pricey , but worth every penny.</p><p><strong>Standard and Optional Features</strong><br> The 6-Series convertible comes standard with leather upholstery, a navigation system with a 10.2-inch display, voice command functionality and 20 GB of storage space, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, dynamic cruise control, a rear-view camera, a nine-speaker, 205-watt AM/FM/CD stereo system with HD radio and a USB input, a sunroof, a proximity key, xenon headlights, LED foglights and 18-inch alloy wheels. We highly advise upping for the $1,800 Digital HiFi system as the base stereo is awful.</p><p data-spx-slot="1"><br></p><p><strong>Occupant Safety</strong><br> All 6-Series convertible models are fitted with dual front and front side airbags in addition to traction and stability control systems, electronic brakeforce distribution and a tire pressure monitoring system.</p><p>Also standard is a roll-over protection system that protects occupants' heads with high-strength aluminum bars that rise up from behind the cabin if a potential roll-over incident is detected.</p><p>Further safety equipment comes in the form of Active Protection, which tightens the seatbelts and closes the windows and sunroof if it detects an imminent crash. Smooth, refined, and highly intelligent when necessary, but rowdy and rude when business is done. And that, for me, is a near-perfect mix. Or, to put it another way, the 750Li is a reverse mullet: party in the front, business in the back. In the driver's seat, once you engage the Sport+ mode and pull the gear selector over into Sport, things get very interesting--and they get even more so if you hold down the traction control button, putting the big limo into full DSC-OFF mode, its most focused and free setting. With DSC-OFF engaged, you can power brake and roast the tires, slide tail-out around any curve of suitable radius for its frigate-like length, or toss the car back and forth like a super-sized sports car with nary a complaint from the car's electronics. In this mode, the big 7er is surprisingly competent , handling like a car 75 percent of its size. This is the party in the front. Swing wide the huge rear door and step into the rear cabin, and it's a whole different universe in the L model over the model. Even without the full executive treatment in the rear seat (our test car had very few upgrades in the back) it's a cavernous space, complete with wedge-shaped rests to support your feet. And it'll fit NBA-sized legs and feet, though headroom may run a bit short at the longer end of the spectrum. The moonroof does an admirable job of staying out of the way thanks to a large scallop in the ceiling just above the rear passengers' heads, but lean too far forward and the tall-torsoed six-foot-plus crowd may encounter some unwelcome cranial resistance. But even so, there's ample shoulder and hip room, plenty of light (and shades to quell it) and enough panache to make negotiating a major share trade or setting the next tee time not just possible, but pleasurable. Materials, finish, and quality of the rear seat area is impeccable, even at the $98,900 price point our car stickered at. This is the business in the back. Needless to say, we like to party, so the car stayed in Sport, Sport+ or DSC-OFF mode most of its week with us. That may have contributed to the rather miserable 15.6 mpg average we saw, though a heavy right foot and the endless reward of really pushing the 750Li likely contributed as well. So what's the deal with all these Sport, Sport+ settings I'm on about? It's the way BMW handles mapping the adjustable damping system and the tuning of the six-speed automatic gearbox. Settings include: Comfort, Normal, Sport, Sport+, and the secret setting, DSC-OFF. You can access the four standard settings by pressing the corresponding toggle switch in the center console, beside the gear selector. To access DSC-OFF, simply hold the traction control button until the navigation system begins to alert you to the import of your decision. Similarly, the transmission can be bumped from standard Drive mode into Sport by a slide of the gear selector to the left. Once there, you can choose to let the computer do the job for you or bump forward to shift down and pull back to shift up. Those who've attempted to drive American and Japanese manu-matics hard will recognize that BMW has gotten it right; none of the bump forward to upshift/backward to downshift nonsense. In the end, though, the point may be moot--unless you're really pushing the car to its limits, automatic mode is just as quick as manual mode, and perhaps quicker as you obviate the tap on the rev limiter brought on by a late upshift. The 750Li's electronics match revs on downshifts in either drive or manual, though the lack of paddle shifters on the steering wheel remind you you're driving an executive limo, not a sports car. The fact that you may need reminding is real though--with the M Sport package in full sporting mode, the big 7er handles much more nimbly than its curb weight or wheelbase would suggest. The meaty steering wheel weights up nicely, the not-too-aggressively-bolstered seats hug you, and it rotates and transitions like a sporty 3-Series running at 90 percent pace. From the outside, the 2012 750Li cuts a clean figure, freed from the styling of previous models. It manages to pack its proportions into a package that looks leaner and lower than its true size should allow, escaping awkwardness from any angle. Despite the optical illusion, its size is undeniable when parking--it's wide, long and those extended rear doors don't want to see a steel canyon of Tahoes or Expeditions alongside. After a week behind the wheel of the big Bimmer, we understand why we see so many of these cars piloted by a nattily-attired professional as the rear seat sits empty. While Mercedes, Audi and Lexus may offer slightly better pricing, the 750Li is the driver's car of the bunch. ------------------------------- BMW’s new N63, 4.4-litre twin-turbo, direct injected mill, the same engine being released iin the 750i. With 298Kw/400hp and a hefty 450 pounf /feet of torque BMW's twin-turbo 3.0L inline-six has been a rousing success, with nothing less than a Wards 10 Best Engines award sitting in its trophy case. The praise is understandable and well-deserved, as the engine uses a combination of forced induction and direct injection to serve up a torque curve that's far beefier and flatter than what should be expected from a engine of its size. So what next for the propeller brand? Simple -- take similar technology, add it to the company's 4.4L V8 and toss in a dash of unconventional packaging to make everything fit. BMW put its latest jewel on display at the 20011 Detroit Auto Show, and we snapped some shots of it to give you an idea of why this engine is so special. We've included those photos in one of our galleries, and below the fold, we've thrown in a few observations. Undoubtedly, the most unique feature of the 4.4L TT is the packaging of the turbochargers in the valley between the cylinder banks. This is made possible by the swapping of the intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder heads, with the exhaust now exiting towards the middle. This allows the turbochargers to be mounted in the valley with minimal plumbing, which means less bulk, lower weight and better efficiency. Immediately after exiting the turbochargers, the exhaust gases enter the catalysts. It's important to keep the cats as close as possible, as the exhaust carries heat that is required for the converters' operation. Packaging the cats in this location underneath the hood must present some interesting insulation challenges! Instead of expensive variable-vane technology, each turbo makes use of fixed geometry and relatively simple wastegates. Each compressor is fed via a black oval-shaped duct, as shown above. Between the compressor outlet and the intake manifolds lie a pair of air-to-water intercoolers, one for each bank. Such an intercooler reduces packaging volume and tract length compared to a top- or front-mounted air-to-air heat exchanger. Immediately downstream of the intercoolers lie a pair of electronically-controlled throttle bodies. Below each centrally-located coil-on-plug (COP) assembly resides the direct injector, along with the feed lines and fuel rail. It's presumed that piezoelectric injectors are employed here, which are fast enough to allow several injection events per combustion cycle. Each fuel rail gets its own fuel-pressure regulator. The operating system of this system is yet unknown, but we're guessing that it's similar to the 200 bar (3000 PSI) that is used in the engine's direct-injection predecessors. Dished pistons are used to lower the compression ratio, with a compact ring package to reduce crevice volume and frictional losses. The net effect is a peak of 400 HP, with 450 lb-ft of torque delivered between 1750 and 4500 RPM. In a sport sedan such as the 7 Series, this engine will likely erase fond memories of the musclecar era, and even in portly SUVs such as BMW's X5 and X6, the result should still be rather impressive. ---------------------------------------------------- Behind the Wheel | 2009 BMW 750i and 750Li Casting Out Devils, BMW’s 7 Becomes More Heavenly Compared with sumptuous but conservative competitors — the Mercedes S-Class, the Jaguar XJ and the Lexus LS 460 — the BMW says of its owner, “My hair may be gray and I may wear funny hats in Boca Raton, but you won’t catch medoing 55 in the fast lane.” Unfortunately, the delights of the 7 Series, which include blowing away rosy-cheeked lads in Subarus, had become weighed down by baggage. The often-derided iDrive controls made it hard to tune in Neil Diamond without wanting to punch out the display screen. And while I usually have no beef with icy Germanic interiors, the outgoing model took the dominatrix-in-Berlin theme too far; no flagship luxury sedan should make people suffer for their driving pleasure. Cabin demerits included obtuse controls and rigidly minimalist appointments. That’s why the 2009 7 Series is such a double delight, whether in standard (750i) or stretched (750Li) guise. Yes, the new 7 is faster, nimbler and more fun than any plus-size sedan has a right to be. But with all due respect to the Bavarian engineering on display, that’s almost an easy birdie on the BMW course. More surprisingly, the big BMW has ditched its misanthropic ways to embrace anyone in its rich presence. And rich it is, with the 750i starting at $81,125 and the 750Li topping out around $112,000 with every conceivable,option. The 7 arrives just as Chris Bangle — that’s his picture with the dictionary citation for “controversial” — departs BMW after 16 years as design director. And it was the last-generation 7 Series of 2002 that spawned the term “Bangle butt,” a snarky characterization of that car’s jutting, coffin-lidded trunk. In Mr. Bangle’s defense, talk is cheap and BMWs are not. Actual buyers, as opposed to dittoheads on car blogs, made the departing model the best-selling 7 ever. In the same vein, be wary of revisionist nonsense suggesting that the new 7 succeeds because it erases Bangle’s memory faster than a Communist re-education camp. Those willing to remove their anti-Bangle blinders will see the latest car as a clear evolution of his work. Certainly the 7 looks better, yet it is no mea culpa. All the cues are there — even a slimmed-down Bangle booty — but they are better integrated. I began my testing in the short-wheelbase 750i, whose ski-sack pass-through made it ideal for a quick ski trip to Vermont. Later, I switched to a glossy black 750Li. The preschool ease with which I linked my Bluetooth phone, address book and iPod was the first omen of a great road trip. The new iDrive, defying expectations, has gone from worst to first in the wacky world of rotary-knob systems controllers. It essentially mimics the best features of Audi’s M.M.I. system and in some cases improves on them. Nearly all the infuriation is banished — buried submenus, illogical functions, stingy displays, even the gummy knob itself. Toggling between menus is now a simple left-or-right operation; call up a radio station, press the downsized iDrive button and file it as a preset. At 10.2 inches, the high-resolution display screen may be the largest I’ve seen in a production car, big enough to contain split-screen maps plus a submenu. Ease of use extends to Driving Dynamics Control, with simple up-down buttons to range through four settings (from comfort to sport plus) that urge the steering, suspension, throttle and transmission to ever-snappier levels of performance. The 7 is still a driver-first car, with basic-yet-gorgeous analog gauges and a serious mien. But this 7 is less stark inside, with warmer finishes like a flowing wedge of wood along the instrument panel. Seats are a long-haul fantasy, with built-in heating and ventilation, an optional massager and an additional adjustment for the upper seatback. As before, storage is meager up front, and at 14 cubic feet, the trunk is fairly nice in the big-car league. The rear seat is the Rorschach test for owners. Stretched 5.5 inches, the long-wheelbase 750Li has a lounge-worth y 44.3 inches of rear legroom, two to three inches more than key rivals. The 750i is nearly 82 pounds lighter, but loses nearly seven inches of rear kneeroom. In the past, I’ve favored the short-bus 7, but now I’m inclined to go long: the 750Li gives up almost nothing in performance, so at these prices you may as well treat passengers to the decadent back seat with its cute carpeted footrests. And this time, BMW created a length-disguising roof for the 750Li. The LWB is the way to go Yawn..That's why you have adaptive BiXenon headlights and active high beam with But on a darkened two-lane road in Vermont, the new high-beam-assist feature proved pretty slick. Once activated, the system automatically dimmed the brights when it sensed an approaching car, then flicked them back on the instant the car passed. Allow me also to praise the toasty heated steering wheel, a feature that I find more beneficial than seat warmers That sport package also adds 19-inch wheels, a sport steering wheel and active antisway bars to reduce body lean. The only AWOL option is the full Internet access available to Europeans. For now, liability concerns will keep Americans from posting chocolate-covered-baby photos on Facebook while at the wheel. But next year, BMW will roll out the first all-wheel -drive 7-Series in the model’s five generations. Like the compact 3 Series sedan and even tinier 1 Series coupe, the 7 has adopted dual turbochargers to bump up the power from a relatively small engine. Here, a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 develops 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque — much more torque than any direct rival makes, and only 15 pound-feet less than Mercedes’s S63 AMG, a $135,000 hot rod with a monumental 6.2-liter V-8. Drop the hammer and the 750i blows from 0 to 60 in 4.7 seconds. Yes, this four-wheel McMansion is faster than the much smaller 335i, and quicker than the previous 12-cylinder 760Li, too. Alas, the mileage is estimated at 17 m.p.g. in town, 24 on the highway, for the 750Li. A slick double-wishbone front suspension, a first for a BMW passenger car, combines with computerized shock absorbers. The longer model adds a standard self-leveling rear suspension. During a four-hour jaunt through the Hudson River Valley, I thought of all those digital zeroes and ones whirring around to increase the 7’s uncanny capability. Yet the car still feels communicative and natural, not an automaton. Pricier sedans like the Bentley Flying Spur and Mercedes S-Class AMG, pushed near their limits, still betray some 2.5-ton insecurity, a sense that it’s time to back off and drive as if you’re in a normal car. The BMW is nothing like that. In normal or comfort mode, the car is cushy, yet seriously sporty. Move up to sport or sport-plus mode, and the BMW hustles with almost indescribable brio. The only big sedan that feels almost this athletic is the Maserati Quattroporte, which also costs significantly more. Of course, the 7 remains the most expensive BMW, one reason you rarely see a 20- or 30-something at the wheel. And for some odd reason it's the fastest one i've driven, by far ------------- ------------------------------ ------------------------------------------2012 BMW <750L is the automotive incarnation of Billy Bob Thornton. Smooth, refined, and highly intelligent when necessary, but rowdy and rude when business is done. And that, for me, is a near-perfect mix. Or, to put it another way, the 750Li is a reverse mullet: party in the front, business in the back. In the driver's seat, once you engage the Sport+ mode and pull the gear selector over into Sport, things get very interesting--and they get even more so if you hold down the traction control button, putting the big limo into full DSC-OFF mode, its most focused and free setting. With DSC-OFF engaged, you can power brake and roast the tires, slide tail-out around any curve of suitable radius for its frigate-like length, or toss the car back and forth like a super-sized sports car with nary a complaint from the car's electronics. In this mode, the big 7er is surprisingly competent, handling like a car 75 percent of its size. This is the party in the front. Swing wide the huge rear door and step into the rear cabin, and it's a whole different universe in the L model over the model. Even without the full executive treatment in the rear seat (our test car had very few upgrades in the back) it's a cavernous space, complete with wedge-shaped rests to support your feet. And it'll fit NBA-sized legs and feet, though headroom may run a bit short at the longer end of the spectrum. The moonroof does an admirable job of staying out of the way thanks to a large scallop in the ceiling just above the rear passengers' heads, but lean too far forward and the tall-torsoed six-foot-plus crowd may encounter some unwelcome cranial resistance. But even so, there's ample shoulder and hip room, plenty of light (and shades to quell it) and enough panache to make negotiating a major share trade or setting the next tee time not just possible, but pleasurable. Materials, finish, and quality of the rear seat area is impeccable, even at the $98,900 price point our car stickered at. This is the business in the back. Needless to say, we like to party, so the car stayed in Sport, Sport+ or DSC-OFF mode most of its week with us. That may have contributed to the rather miserable 13.6 mpg average we saw, though a heavy right foot and the endless reward of really pushing the 750Li likely contributed as well. So what's the deal with all these Sport, Sport+ settings I'm on about? It's the way BMW handles mapping the adjustable damping system and the tuning of the six-speed automatic gearbox. Settings include: Comfort, Normal, Sport, Sport+, and the secret setting, DSC-OFF. You can access the four standard settings by pressing the corresponding toggle switch in the center console, beside the gear selector. To access DSC-OFF, simply hold the traction control button until the navigation system begins to alert you to the import of your decision. Similarly, the transmission can be bumped from standard Drive mode into Sport by a slide of the gear selector to the left. Once there, you can choose to let the computer do the job for you or bump forward to shift down and pull back to shift up. Those who've attempted to drive American and Japanese manu-matics hard will recognize that BMW has gotten it right; none of the bump forward to upshift/backward to downshift nonsense. In the end, though, the point may be moot--unless you're really pushing the car to its limits, automatic mode is just as quick as manual mode, and perhaps quicker as you obviate the tap on the rev limiter brought on by a late upshift. The 750Li's electronics match revs on downshifts in either drive or manual, though the lack of paddle shifters on the steering wheel remind you you're driving an executive limo, not a sports car. The fact that you may need reminding is real though--with the M Sport package in full sporting mode, the big 7er handles much more nimbly than its curb weight or wheelbase would suggest. The meaty steering wheel weights up nicely, the not-too-aggressively-bolstered seats hug you, and it rotates and transitions like a sporty 3-Series running at 90 percent pace. From the outside, the 2012 750Li cuts a clean figure, freed from the styling of previous models. It manages to pack its proportions into a package that looks leaner and lower than its true size should allow, escaping awkwardness from any angle. Despite the optical illusion, its size is undeniable when parking--it's wide, long and those extended rear doors don't want to see a steel canyon of Tahoes or Expeditions alongside. After a week behind the wheel of the big Bimmer, we understand why we see so many of these cars piloted by a nattily-attired professional as the rear seat sits empty. While Mercedes, Audi and Lexus may offer slightly better pricing, the 750Li is the driver's car of the bunch. ------------------------------- BMW’s new N63, 4.4-litre twin-turbo, direct injected mill, the same engine being released iin the 750i. With 298Kw/400hp and a hefty 450 pounf /feet of torque BMW's twin-turbo 3.0L inline-six has been a rousing success, with nothing less than a Wards 10 Best Engines award sitting in its trophy case. The praise is understandable and well-deserved, as the engine uses a combination of forced induction and direct injection to serve up a torque curve that's far beefier and flatter than what should be expected from a engine of its size. So what next for the propeller brand? Simple -- take similar technology, add it to the company's 4.4L V8 and toss in a dash of unconventional packaging to make everything fit. BMW put its latest jewel on display at the 20011 Detroit Auto Show, and we snapped some shots of it to give you an idea of why this engine is so special. We've included those photos in one of our galleries, and below the fold, we've thrown in a few observations. Undoubtedly, the most unique feature of the 4.4L TT is the packaging of the turbochargers in the valley between the cylinder banks. This is made possible by the swapping of the intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder heads, with the exhaust now exiting towards the middle. This allows the turbochargers to be mounted in the valley with minimal plumbing, which means less bulk, lower weight and better efficiency. Immediately after exiting the turbochargers, the exhaust gases enter the catalysts. It's important to keep the cats as close as possible, as the exhaust carries heat that is required for the converters' operation. Packaging the cats in this location underneath the hood must present some interesting insulation challenges! Instead of expensive variable-vane technology, each turbo makes use of fixed geometry and relatively simple wastegates. Each compressor is fed via a black oval-shaped duct, as shown above. Between the compressor outlet and the intake manifolds lie a pair of air-to-water intercoolers, one for each bank. Such an intercooler reduces packaging volume and tract length compared to a top- or front-mounted air-to-air heat exchanger. Immediately downstream of the intercoolers lie a pair of electronically-controlled throttle bodies. Below each centrally-located coil-on-plug (COP) assembly resides the direct injector, along with the feed lines and fuel rail. It's presumed that piezoelectric injectors are employed here, which are fast enough to allow several injection events per combustion cycle. Each fuel rail gets its own fuel-pressure regulator. The operating system of this system is yet unknown, but we're guessing that it's similar to the 200 bar (3000 PSI) that is used in the engine's direct-injection predecessors. Dished pistons are used to lower the compression ratio, with a compact ring package to reduce crevice volume and frictional losses. The net effect is a peak of 400 HP, with 450 lb-ft of torque delivered between 1750 and 4500 RPM. In a sport sedan such as the 7 Series, this engine will likely erase fond memories of the musclecar era, and even in portly SUVs such as BMW's X5 and X6, the result should still be rather impressive. ---------------------------------------------------- Behind the Wheel | 2009 BMW 750i and 750Li Casting Out Devils, BMW’s 7 Becomes More Heavenly Compared with sumptuous but conservative competitors — the Mercedes S-Class, the Jaguar XJ and the Lexus LS 460 — the BMW says of its owner, “My hair may be gray and I may wear funny hats in Boca Raton, but you won’t catch me doing 55 in the fast lane.” Unfortunately, the delights of the 7 Series, which include blowing away rosy-cheeked lads in Subarus, had become weighed down by baggage. The often-derided iDrive controls made it hard to tune in Neil Diamond without wanting to punch out the display screen. And while I usually have no beef with icy Germanic interiors, the outgoing model took the dominatrix-in-Berlin theme too far; no flagship luxury sedan should make people suffer for their driving pleasure. Cabin demerits included obtuse controls and rigidly minimalist appointments. That’s why the 2009 7 Series is such a double delight, whether in standard (750i) or stretched (750Li) guise. Yes, the new 7 is faster, nimbler and more fun than any plus-size sedan has a right to be. But with all due respect to the Bavarian engineering on display, that’s almost an easy birdie on the BMW course. More surprisingly, the big BMW has ditched its misanthropic ways to embrace anyone in its rich presence. And rich it is, with the 750i starting at $81,125 and the 750Li topping out around $112,000 with every conceivable option. The 7 arrives just as Chris Bangle — that’s his picture with the dictionary citation for “controversial” — departs BMW after 16 years as design director. And it was the last-generation 7 Series of 2002 that spawned the term “Bangle butt,” a snarky characterization of that car’s jutting, coffin-lidded trunk. In Mr. Bangle’s defense, talk is cheap and BMWs are not. Actual buyers, as opposed to dittoheads on car blogs, made the departing model the best-selling 7 ever. In the same vein, be wary of revisionist nonsense suggesting that the new 7 succeeds because it erases Bangle’s memory faster than a Communist re-education camp. Those willing to remove their anti-Bangle blinders will see the latest car as a clear evolution of his work. Certainly the 7 looks better, yet it is no mea culpa. All the cues are there — even a slimmed-down Bangle booty — but they are better integrated. I began my testing in the short-wheelbase 750i, whose ski-sack pass-through made it ideal for a quick ski trip to Vermont. Later, I switched to a glossy black 750Li. The preschool ease with which I linked my Bluetooth phone, address book and iPod was the first omen of a great road trip. The new iDrive, defying expectations, has gone from worst to first in the wacky world of rotary-knob systems controllers. It essentially mimics the best features of Audi’s M.M.I. system and in some cases improves on them. Nearly all the infuriation is banished — buried submenus, illogical functions, stingy displays, even the gummy knob itself. Toggling between menus is now a simple left-or-right operation; call up a radio station, press the downsized iDrive button and file it as a preset. At 10.2 inches, the high-resolution display screen may be the largest I’ve seen in a production car, big enough to contain split-screen maps plus a submenu. Ease of use extends to Driving Dynamics Control, with simple up-down buttons to range through four settings (from comfort to sport plus) that urge the steering, suspension, throttle and transmission to ever-snappier levels of performance. The 7 is still a driver-first car, with basic-yet-gorgeous analog gauges and a serious mien. But this 7 is less stark inside, with warmer finishes like a flowing wedge of wood along the instrument panel. Seats are a long-haul fantasy, with built-in heating and ventilation, an optional massager and an additional adjustment for the upper seatback. As before, storage is meager up front, and at 14 cubic feet, the trunk is fairly puny in the big-car league. The rear seat is the Rorschach test for owners. Stretched 5.5 inches, the long-wheelbase 750Li has a lounge-worthy 44.3 inches of rear legroom, two to three inches more than key rivals. The 750i is nearly 82 pounds lighter, but loses nearly seven inches of rear kneeroom. In the past, I’ve favored the short-bus 7, but now I’m inclined to go long: the 750Li gives up almost nothing in performance, so at these prices you may as well treat passengers to the decadent back seat with its cute carpeted footrests. And this time, BMW created a length-disguising roof for the 750Li. The LWB is the way to go The latest infrared night vision system highlights a pedestrian in your path by wrapping the person in an animated on-screen border; it can also flash a warning in the heads-up display. Yawn..That's why you have adaptive BiXenon headlights and active high beam with the driver's aid package. Some of this technology is of debatable necessity; night vision will have my vote when it can help detect and splatter zombies. But on a darkened two-lane road in Vermont, the new high-beam-assist feature proved pretty slick. Once activated, the system automatically dimmed the brights when it sensed an approaching car, then flicked them back on the instant the car passed. Allow me also to praise the toasty heated steering wheel, a feature that I find more beneficial than seat warmers That sport package also adds 19-inch wheels, a sport steering wheel and active antisway bars to reduce body lean. The only AWOL option is the full Internet access available to Europeans. For now, liability concerns will keep Americans from posting chocolate-covered-baby photos on Facebook while at the wheel. But next year, BMW will roll out the first all-wheel-drive 7-Series in the model’s five generations. Like the compact 3 Series sedan and even tinier 1 Series coupe, the 7 has adopted dual turbochargers to bump up the power from a relatively small engine. Here, a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 develops 400 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque — much more torque than any direct rival makes, and only 15 pound-feet less than Mercedes’s S63 AMG, a $135,000 hot rod with a monumental 6.2-liter V-8. Drop the hammer and the 750i blows from 0 to 60 in 4.8 seconds. Yes, this four-wheel McMansion is faster than the much smaller 335i, and quicker than the previous 12-cylinder 760Li, too. Alas, the mileage is estimated at 16 m.p.g. in town, 22 on the highway, for the 750Li. A slick double-wishbone front suspension, a first for a BMW passenger car, combines with computerized shock absorbers. The longer model adds a standard self-leveling rear suspension. During a four-hour jaunt through the Hudson River Valley, I thought of all those digital zeroes and ones whirring around to increase the 7’s uncanny capability. Yet the car still feels communicative and natural, not an automaton. Pricier sedans like the Bentley Flying Spur and Mercedes S-Class AMG, pushed near their limits, still betray some 2.5-ton insecurity, a sense that it’s time to back off and drive as if you’re in a normal car. The BMW is nothing like that. In normal or comfort mode, the car is cushy, yet seriously sporty. Move up to sport or sport-plus mode, and the BMW hustles with almost indescribable brio. The only big sedan that feels almost this athletic is the Maserati Quattroporte, which also costs significantly more. Of course, the 7 remains the most expensive BMW, one reason you rarely see a 20- or 30-something at the wheel.
