It also exchanges the old B-family engine for a 2.0-liter version of Mazda's corporate four-cylinder engine that's used far and wide in Mazda and Ford lineups. And inexplicably, the new car gets rid of a name that has meant so much to so many-Miata-and now calls itself simply the MX-5. But since Miatas have always been about the driving experience, let's cut to the chase and tell you what you want to know. How fast is the new car? How does it handle? And does it still have that unique ability to provoke an irresistible grin from anyone who loves driving? First, this new model is the fastest ever Miata-we know, we know, Mazda wants to forget about that name. It scoots to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, continues through the quarter in 15 seconds flat at 91 mph, and doesn't stop accelerating until it hits 131 mph. With the exception of the 91-mph trap speed, which was equaled by the turbocharged last-generation Mazdaspeed model, each of those figures sets a record for showroom MX-5s. And this performance is hugely faster than that of the original 1990 model, which needed 16.8 seconds to cover the quarter-mile and topped out at 116 mph. The new MX-5's numbers were achieved with the six-speed manual gearbox, which is standard on the Grand Touring edition we tested, as well as on the Sport and Limited versions of the new car. But we don't expect the performance to be much slower with the five-speed base car, as that transmission allows the MX-5 to reach 60 mph in second gear rather than requiring the extra shift to third that the six-speed does. The base model, called the Club Sport, weighs about 50 pounds less than the Grand Touring, which won't hurt its acceleration, either. Speaking of weight, we are delighted that the new model's weight gain is so slight. At 2482 pounds, this MX-5 compresses the scales with just 102 more pounds than the second-gen Miata we tested in 1998. Of course, the first Miata, in 1990, weighed 2210 pounds. But that model was about two inches shorter and narrower than the new car. It also had much smaller tires, 10 percent less cockpit space, brakes that were two inches smaller all around and without anti-lock control, no front or side airbags, no stability control, and 54 fewer horsepower from its engine, which was 25 percent smaller than the latest mill. In other words, the 12-percent weight increase between the first MX-5 and this newest version seems justified. One other reason for the weight is a useful increase in structural rigidity. We rate the improvement in our perceived stiffness of this third-generation car to be as great as the improvement between the first- and second-generation Miatas. The car is rigid, with hardly any quivers or shakes. This solid foundation allows the suspension to work effectively without any deflection or lost motion. Driven quickly over one of our favorite back roads, the new MX-5 is extremely stable even while its wheels move furiously to maintain contact with uneven pavement. The Bilstein shocks that are part of the optional $500 suspension package probably helped a lot on these roads. On the skidpad, the new MX-5 hangs on to the tune of 0.90 g, a figure exceeded by only one of the two Mazdaspeed Miatas we've tested. What's more, if you turn off the stability control that came in the premium package on our car, the MX-5 is delightfully neutral. Although you can't easily kick out the tail with power, you can definitely balance the car with your right foot once you start cornering with enthusiasm. With a turbocharged and intercooled (a first for any U.S. Hondavehicle) 2.3-liter, i-VTEC four providing power (240 horses at 6000 rpm, 260 pound-feet of torque at 4500 rpm), the RDX can scoot to 60 mph in less than 6.5 seconds, which is quicker than the other major players in this class (BMW X3, Land Rover LR2), as well as a good many cars. Moreover, the RDX has moves to go with its muscle. We judged its handling as deft as the BMW’s in a shootout with the X3 and the LR2 [“Attack of the Flying Cicada Killers,” July 2007], and it has impressed all of our drivers with its zealous responses—with one reservation. But we’ve gotten a bit ahead of our narrative. Our long-term test subject arrived at the C/D offices on July 13, 2007, with its 18-gallon tank full of premium fuel and 75 miles on its odometer. Acura classifies vehicles equipped with major options such as a nav system as separate models, and that’s true of the RDX, which is offered in standard and Tech-package trims. The two levels are mechanically identical, with the 2.3-liter turbo and Acura’s SH-AWD system, which delivers extra thrust to one or the other of the rear wheels in hard cornering to enhance handling. The system normally delivers 90 percent of engine output to the front wheels but can send as much as 70 percent to the rear wheels. The basic RDX is nicely equipped, with the amenities one expects in an entry-luxury CUV: a power sunroof; leather-trimmed seats, heated up front; a good audio system with an in-dash six-CD changer and XM radio; power windows and locks; heated power mirrors; anti-lock brakes; stability control; and front, side, and curtain airbags. Its 2007 MSRP was $33,665; it’s $34,455 for 2009. The Tech package adds a nav system with voice recognition and real-time traffic info; a rearview camera; hands-free wireless phone interface; dual-zone climate controls; upgraded 10-speaker AM/FM audio with a six-slot CD/DVD-audio changer; an owner-programmable auxiliary-info display; and steering-wheel controls for the phone, the voice recognition, and the info display. It was priced at $37,165 in 2007 ($37,755 for 2009). It would be inaccurate to characterize our relationship with this vehicle as love-hate, but the RDX did provoke some polar responses over the course of the test. For example, there were multiple logbook complaints about the low-beam headlamps, which were judged to be too low, with a poor dispersion pattern. The screen for the rearview camera was invisible in bright light to anyone wearing polarized sunglasses, and turning on the headlamps in daylight reduced the illumination of the instruments, making them difficult to see. The hard-to-read indictment was applied to the engine-oil dipstick by one enterprising driver, who also found it hard to extract the dipstick from its socket. To be fair, this complaint was a little superfluous; the RDX didn’t require extra oil between changes. Introduced in 2008, the diesel-powered GL320 CDI won the Editors' Most Wanted award for SUVs priced above $55,000. With its attractive blend of passenger space, cargo capacity, capable on- and off-road performance and plenty of attractive features at a reasonable price, the GL set itself apart from full-sizers like the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator. For 2009, the most intriguing model in the GL-Class line is the GL320 CDI. The letters refer to the turbocharged, 3.0-liter diesel engine under its hood, which like other diesel-powered vehicles, provides massive low-end response and superior fuel mileage versus its gasoline counterparts. The 320 is equipped 450 and its 26.4-gallon fuel tank results in a 700-mile range. Of course, bad thoughts linger from the clattering, smoky oil-burners from the 1970s and '80s, but today's diesels are quiet, not the least bit stinky and very clean. In fact, the 2009's GL-Class Bluetec diesel is so clean, that it meets incredibly strict emissions standards of California and is 50-state certified. In the rarefied, often ostentatious, air of large luxury SUVs, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class manages to present itself with a touch of class. Its mechanical sophistication, unit-body construction and superior craftsmanship also set it apart from other seven-passenger full-sizers, while the 320 CDI ring in at a price that undercuts a similarly equipped Escalade and other models in the segment. Interior The 2009 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a large luxury.
