It brings me no joy to sell this. It does bring me joy to find the ideal owner. The Dasher was the first modern VW with numerous forward looking features. It enjoys crossover with the Porsche 924, the Audi Fox, and other German manufactured cars at the time. At the high end price bracket for its time, it was marketed as a performance car with the sensibilities of a sedan. Clean title, good tags until 2017.All systems are go. Motor is tuned to specification. Bentley repair manual, plus factory owners manual included. I have worked extensively on it. I kept extraordinary notes. I'm a writer.Known Maintenance Issues: The car needs to be garaged to reduce water intrusion. Portland recently had a 2-week rain storm and it revealed the weakness of its rubber gaskets. One exterior window trim piece is waiting to be put one. I have had troubled finding the specific clips required. The passenger side door has a small vent window with a corroded and broken swivel system. I have locked it into place. Junkyard that part. Hatch lift supports need replacing. I could not find the right fit anywhere, but don't give up. Fuel pump relay circuit has been bypassed; the entire fuse panel needs to be replaced to resolve that one circuit. There was a recall because of this circuit. Evidently, this car was never recalled. I confirmed with the dealer that the recall would no longer be honored. Other improvements will be recommended in writing. The Story: This was a single-family owned car. This car was purchased new from a lot in Santa Rosa. The owner, a conservative man, drove it for the rest of his life. It was passed to his son. His son, a moderate tempered City of Sacramento employee, drove it for years before passing it on to his son. This person is a friend of mine. The vehicle, at 115,000 miles, was in good shape, yet it immediately started having trouble in Portland. He continued its maintenance, but became discouraged when it stopped starting, and allowed it to sit for two years in his driveway. There, rust started to encroach. Water intrusion caused mold and some rusting inside. Rust collected a little bit outside. All in all, he gave me the car in good enough shape that I have reversed the trend and I can say confidently that it does not suffer from any structural damage or severe interior damage.

This engine is arguably the best diesel conversion for these vans due to it's great combination of fuel economy, power, and reliability. The van had a diesel conversion done before I bought it. It had a '93 Jetta TDI (Turbocharged Direct Injection) engine when I got it. That engine failed in November, so I replaced it this spring with a similar VW TDI engine once I found a good replacement with low miles. In the last two years I've had the following work done: - '94 Golf turbo diesel engine w/ 78,000 miles on it. (professionally installed this spring at the newer-ownership Trafton VW shop in SE Portland) - transmission (completely rebuilt automatic done by in River City Transmissions SE Portland) - new Bosch alternator - AC servicing - Coolant pipes (high end metal ones installed at Heckmann & Thiemann in SE Portland) - all hoses Features: - seating for 7 (two removable rear facing seats) - AC - two super strong heaters - very well sealed and no wind noise cab - high traffic removable rug protecting the excellent condition interior floor carpet - power windows and doors (I decided to replace the passenger side window with a manual crank opener when the electric opener failed, driver window is working fine as the electric that came with the Carat) - nice integrated retracting dashboard shade - a cool pop-out table - Yakima locking core roof rack for car top carrier or impromptu hauling - Great interior condition - perfect kid-mover van that actually looks cool - can sleep two adults on the rear fold down bed, and one or two kids under 10 (I built a removable front seat sleeping platform you can have that works great for a kid from 4-10 or so) Blemishes: Passenger side sliding door is dented, but operates and closes fine. Some rust repair was done underneath the battery at some point in its life.not a replacement panel like we would do today but it is an inconspicuous and minor patch. Originally Pearl White, it was repainted by the previous owner,it is now not too far off though has a more cream hue when compared to the original. Apprearancewise the paint has just been wet sanded and buffed out, as well as had some small scratches here and there touched up, and has a nice shine and extremely presentable – it isn’t perfect but in my opinion a solid 8/10. Interior: This bus has all new interior – original style black basket weave front seat covers, all new grey vinyl rear seat and bed covers, including the extra Westfalia stool. The rear flooring is new vinyl, laid down over the original linoleum, and all the wood paneling was re-done in original Baltic Birch. Needless to say it feels like new inside, but still retains its old world charm. The cabinets and tables have their patina with new original style Westfalia handles installed to replace the brittle sun baked originals. Windows will crank out just as they should, pop-top canvas has no issues or rips and looks almost like new. One of the most astounding features on this bus is the unbelievable original condition of its Westfalia side tent. It has only been up 3 times in the last 40+ years that I know of – twice by the previous owners and once by me. Bus also has curtains, removable front windshield curtain and read mosquito new as well as period folding picnic table included. Mechanicals: The bus starts, runs and drives tight and solid. The engine is a replacement block, updated with an alternator and the later style oil cooler. 1600 dual port, single carb. It runs extremely smooth and powerful with a positive exhaust note. Has the usual VW bus drop of oil after a drive, runs nice and cool doesn’t overheat, timing and points just set, valves adjusted and carb tuned up. The transmission is smooth and tight and shifts smoothly through all the gears, no noises and does not pop out of any. Steering is light and smooth and fluid just topped up, has a little free play in the middle that could be tightened but nothing excessive. The brakes stop the bus perfectly straight no pulling, rear cylinders were replaced and the drums cleaned up. Pedal sits high and seels great.

A reliable air-cooled van, I drove this thing across the country and had little trouble. Incredible vehicles to drive, especially on the highway. It's sort of the new American dream, isn't it? I had multiple repairs done to her in the past year, and being a college student I need the money more critically than the van at the moment. Here's a rundown of repairs:~Replacement of clutch and rear main seal~CVS Boot service~Repack front wheel bearings~Replace steering rack boot~Replace Speedo cable~Replace gas tank hoses and grommets ~Replace spark plugs So the engine and mechanical components are in good shape and the thing will run without any problem. Internally, it could use some repairs. I began to replace the wallpaper but ended up leaving it as-is. The sink faucet needs to be fixed but as far as I know the refrigerator and stove work. The driver's side seat is in need of a replacement, as it's pretty worn. The original dipstick I was given was broken, so I bought a different kind to suffice as a dipstick. I live in the NW, and humidity has been a problem for the ceiling, so I'd suggest replacing the spray-on fabric with something durable. The passenger side door lock is broken and I don't have a lock key, so I'd suggest replacing those. The A/C unit is detached from the vehicle, and the interior fan isn't working.
