About Us Holman Automotive History - “The Early Years” Holman Automotive was founded in 1924, when Steward C. Holman signed a contract with Ford Motor Company to become the area dealer in Merchantville, NJ. He was financed by his partner, Charles M. Rice of Lewiston, PA. The dealership was named Rice and Holman Ford, and sold Model T, Model A, and the first V-8 models during its early years. Today, the Holman Automotive Group consists of over 25 operating companies which include dealerships, two local leasing companies, a parts distributorship, a truck up-fitting business, and the largest privately-owned fleet leasing company in the country. Steward Holman’s success with Rice and Holman Ford led to many other opportunities in conjunction with Ford Motor Company. In 1939, he took over the area distributorship for Lincoln Mercury. This operation began at the Maple Avenue facility in Pennsauken, NJ, and after one year - as Merlin Motor Co. - relocated to Camden, NJ. That same year, the company began remanufacturing Ford engines and transmissions at the Rice and Holman dealership. This operation grew steadily, and in 1946 was established as Reconditioned Motors and Parts (RMP), a Ford authorized remanufacturer, also located in Pennsauken, NJ. The partnership with Ford Motor Company continued in 1947, when Steward Holman established the beginning of its South Florida operations by opening a Lincoln Mercury dealership in Fort Lauderdale. During the following year, Ford Motor Company asked Rice and Holman Ford to organize a leasing and rental subsidiary to supply the RCA service fleet. This company was named Automotive Rentals, Inc (ARI) and took up a corner of the showroom. By the early 1950’s, the South Florida operations had doubled in size with the addition of another Lincoln Mercury dealership in Hollywood. It was at this time that R&H Management was formed to more effectively direct the activities of the expanding operations. In 1959, a Lincoln Mercury dealership was purchased in Miami, Florida, and in New Jersey, a leasing business called R&H Leasing was formed. The company followed in 1963 with the addition of several leasing operations in Florida in conjunction with the existing dealerships. “A Time of Expansion” The 1970’s were a time for general growth and expansion of current businesses. RMP grew in 1970 through the acquisition of several similar remanufacturing companies located in Massachusetts, Maryland, and the Delaware Valley. This added both new sales and additional capacity to the operations. In 1972, a corporate reorganization resulted in R&H Management becoming Holman Enterprises, a corporate holding and management company. The South Florida operations also grew during the 1970’s by establishing another Lincoln Mercury dealership in 1974, located in Pompano Beach, Florida. ARI completed a decade of growth by building and moving into a new facility in Maple Shade, NJ in 1979. The Holman Automotive Group added many new dimensions to the business throughout the 1980’s. The company entered the high line luxury business with the addition of Lauderdale Imports, Ltd., a Rolls Royce/Bentley dealership in 1985. Later that same year, the Company acquired a new Lincoln Mercury dealership in Stratford, NJ. The Southern operations added a new Lincoln Mercury franchise in Margate, Florida in 1988. Both RMP and ARI continued their expansion throughout the 80’s. RMP acquired new business territories in Ohio and Michigan completing expansion into the mid-west. ARI acquired Fleet Body Equipment (FBE) in Kansas City Missouri in 1982, and Lend Lease Cars, Inc in 1989. The addition of FBE allowed the company to design and build special-purpose vehicles, while the acquisition of Lend Lease Cars, Inc., allowed the company to enter into the markets of small to mid-sized fleets. With this expansion, ARI outgrew their Maple Shade offices and in 1990 moved into a larger facility in Mt. Laurel, NJ. “The Growth Continues…” The Holman Automotive Group continued growing throughout the 1990’s. The leasing operations had grown substantially enough that they were reorganized into two central locations for greater efficiency. Holman Automotive History - “The Early Years” Holman Automotive was founded in 1924, when Steward C. Holman signed a contract with Ford Motor Company to become the area dealer in Merchantville, NJ. He was financed by his partner, Charles M. Rice of Lewiston, PA. The dealership was named Rice and Holman Ford, and sold Model T, Model A, and the first V-8 models during its early years. Today, the Holman Automotive Group consists of over 25 operating companies which include dealerships, two local leasing companies, a parts distributorship, a truck up-fitting business, and the largest privately-owned fleet leasing company in the country. Steward Holman’s success with Rice and Holman Ford led to many other opportunities in conjunction with Ford Motor Company. In 1939, he took over the area distributorship for Lincoln Mercury. This operation began at the Maple Avenue facility in Pennsauken, NJ, and after one year - as Merlin Motor Co. - relocated to Camden, NJ. That same year, the company began remanufacturing Ford engines and transmissions at the Rice and Holman dealership. This operation grew steadily, and in 1946 was established as Reconditioned Motors and Parts (RMP), a Ford authorized remanufacturer, also located in Pennsauken, NJ. The partnership with Ford Motor Company continued in 1947, when Steward Holman established the beginning of its South Florida operations by opening a Lincoln Mercury dealership in Fort Lauderdale. During the following year, Ford Motor Company asked Rice and Holman Ford to organize a leasing and rental subsidiary to supply the RCA service fleet. This company was named Automotive Rentals, Inc (ARI) and took up a corner of the showroom. By the early 1950’s, the South Florida operations had doubled in size with the addition of another Lincoln Mercury dealership in Hollywood. It was at this time that R&H Management was formed to more effectively direct the activities of the expanding operations. In 1959, a Lincoln Mercury dealership was purchased in Miami, Florida, and in New Jersey, a leasing business called R&H Leasing was formed. The company followed in 1963 with the addition of several leasing operations in Florida in conjunction with the existing dealerships. “A Time of Expansion” The 1970’s were a time for general growth and expansion of current businesses. RMP grew in 1970 through the acquisition of several similar remanufacturing companies located in Massachusetts, Maryland, and the Delaware Valley. This added both new sales and additional capacity to the operations. In 1972, a corporate reorganization resulted in R&H Management becoming Holman Enterprises, a corporate holding and management company. The South Florida operations also grew during the 1970’s by establishing another Lincoln Mercury dealership in 1974, located in Pompano Beach, Florida. ARI completed a decade of growth by building and moving into a new facility in Maple Shade, NJ in 1979. The Holman Automotive Group added many new dimensions to the business throughout the 1980’s. The company entered the high line luxury business with the addition of Lauderdale Imports, Ltd., a Rolls Royce/Bentley dealership in 1985. Service and Inspection Report – Value Added: We brought this clean Volvo in for service and found that the prior owner had taken great care of the car.  It appears to have been regularly serviced and traded in about the time that you would normally do a major service on the vehicle. We stared by installing a NEW TIMING BELT, TENSIONER and IDLER PULLEY.  These are the major components of the timing belt system.  That’s done for you.  While doing timing belts, we replace spark plugs since it is a good time to freshen up everything on the engine.  We installed Denso® brand plugs so you won’t have to be concerned with that service, either. We changed the engine air filter and vacuumed the road debris that can accumulate in the air box. It appears that the prior owner had recently done an oil change and the oil looks clean. We also noted that the idler wheel on the serpentine belt was a bit noisy at startup (that’s the part that keeps the belt tensioned) so we replaced the idler wheel and bearing assembly. Moving along to the chassis, the front brakes were about half worn so we replaced front brake rotors and pads.  The rear brakes were about half worn too, so we replaced the rear pads. Moving along the outside of the vehicle, we installed new wiper blades, front and rear, and also on the headlight wipers. We finished up this vehicle be changing the cabin air filter.  It is a job that you want done every year and we’ve taken care of that for you. Service and Inspection Report – Value Added: We brought this clean Volvo in for service and found that the prior owner had taken great care of the car.  It appears to have been regularly serviced.   Since we could not verify the mileage for the last timing belt, we did the service.  Doing the job right, we installed NEW CAM SEALS, NEW VVT O-RINGS, NEW TIMING BELT, tensioner and idler wheel.  When we do timing belts, we replace the spark plugs and we installed a new set of Denso® brand plugs.  That’s a major service and it’s done for you!   Using our Snap-On Solus® diagnostic scanner, we noticed some shift solenoid codes which are common on the AW-55 transmission.  What happens is that the electronic shift solenoids stick and the shift quality is not as good as when new.  However, the transmissions in these vehicles can go a long time with service.  So, we replaced the electronic shift solenoids in the valve body and did a complete transmission fluid change using the correct Mobile 3309 fluid.  This procedure took care of the codes, and now shifts as designed.   Test driving the vehicle after the transmission service, we noticed a slight vibration at highway speeds under load.  That’s a sign of the drive axle needing service, so we replaced both front drive axles with remanufactured units.  No more vibration!   While changing the drive axles, we changed the top engine mount as well as the lower right.  Over time both are about ready for change at this mileage and we did both of them for you.    The prior owner had recently done an oil change and the service label indicates that the next oil change is at 149k miles.   On the chassis, we noted a noise from the front suspension and traced it down to the coil spring mount.  We pulled both struts and replaced the mounts and bearings for you – no more noise.   While we had the vehicle apart for service, we noted that the vehicle had close to new brakes, front and rear.   Moving along the outside of the vehicle, we installed new wiper blades, front and rear.   As we drove the vehicle, the climate control worked fine but we heard the occasional chirp noise from the blower motor.  So, yes we did, we replaced the blower motor so that you wouldn’t have to be bothered by the job.   We finished up this vehicle be changing the cabin air filter.  It is a job that you want done every year and we’ve taken care of that for you.   Shop around and then ADD IT UP!  Why buy one that needs work?  How much will that cost you in addition to the car itself?  The items that we serviced would easily cost you $4,500 if you did all of this after the sale.    You can always pay less.  Just click the “back” button and buy something else?  However, if you are looking for a better value, buy from Grove.  That’s the Grove Automotive Group, Inc. difference.
