More than just thrifty transportation, this is a fun vintage ragtop with iconic status that's the equal of anything this side of a '57 Chevy, and it's been maintained to a level that belies its affordable price tag. No, there weren't any Beetles in showrooms that looked this good in 1978. Thanks to a repaint a few years ago, it wears a glittering coat of Champagne Peach Metallic Red, which is definitely a luxurious-looking color on the rounded VW's body. The paint captures a depth and shimmer that looks expensive and takes the humble VW up a few notches in the desirability scale, and showing up in this one means attracting a crowd. Coming out of long-term ownership, you know it's had a good life and the owner reports that it has always been kept in a garage and not exposed to the elements. Super Beetles received some much-appreciated upgrades, including a curved windshield, longer wheelbase, and a revised front suspension that markedly improved ride and handling. As a result, if you're going to drive your VW, a Super Beetle is an outstanding choice. Add in some bright chrome bumpers, just a bit of stainless trim, the "Fuel Injection" badge on the engine cover, and you have one flashy Beetle. Those bright white bucket seats have obviously been restored, along with the rest of the interior. The bright white and black interior is a great contrast to the copper-colored bodywork and is a pleasant place to be when the sun is shining. Door panels, side panels, and the rear seat were all covered so it looks very OEM, and with a set of contrasting black carpets, the interior has a very high-quality feel. The controls are all still stock, including the round speedometer and traditional 4-speed shifter, although the woodgrained shifter knob is a sporting touch. An AM/FM/CD stereo was installed, along with powerful speakers in custom kick panel enclosures, so you'll have exactly the right soundtrack to match your new Beetle. You'll also note under-dash A/C, which remains fully functional thanks to good old R12 refrigerant in the system. The white convertible top fits well and hides under a matching boot, and thanks to the repositioned spare tire of the Super Beetle, there's plenty of room in the fully upholstered trunk. The 1600 cc flat-four shows signs of excellent maintenance, so any worries about reliability are unnecessary (it IS a VW after all). Everything in the engine bay has been tidied up and while it's not quite show-car perfect, it's clean and orderly with lots of new equipment. Fuel injection was a late addition to the Beetle, and while a lot of folks retrofit carburetors, a properly functioning injection system is reliable and easy to maintain. All the critical duct work remains intact and the exhaust system sounds right. One glance underneath will tell you all you need to know about how well-kept this car truly is, because everything is in very good condition with shiny floor pans, ultra-clean suspension pieces, and lots of new hardware. The tan composite body panels are durable and easy to remove for service, plus they never need maintenance beyond a quick wash down now and then, so this will be the easiest car to keep looking good you've ever owned. The black tube frame becomes as much styling element as protective system, with the powdercoated pieces forming a cage around the entire car, including the driver, engine, and front suspension. There's no way of knowing how many miles are on it, but it looks quite fresh and hasn't been neglected or abused and is in just the right condition to enjoy without worries. Plenty of LED lighting, including a big light bar along the roof line, a pair of side pods that double as side mirrors, and a single headlight up front all give it a purposeful look and the ability to light the road like a flamethrower. Bare-bones describes the interior, but once you're strapped into the form-hugging bucket seat, it's like you and the machine have become one. Just think about turning and the car is already doing it and you can almost feel every single pebble that rolls under the tires, giving you unparalleled control. The cage makes it feel safe and sturdy and you do have protective panels all around, so you're not getting blasted by debris kicked up by the tires. You also get a pretty comprehensive array of gauges to monitor all the important vitals, a shifter just to your right, and a fat steering wheel that's directly connected to the front wheels for instantaneous response. Trunk? Nope. Roof? None. Windows? Are you kidding? Just the basics needed for going fast in the rough. The engine is a 1600 cc Volkswagen air-cooled flat four with a bunch of upgrades to help it build relatively big power. Of course, in a flyweight vehicle like this, the VW's performance is very energetic and thanks to parts from EMPI such as the exhaust system, intake manifold, and carburetor, there's power on tap at just about any speed. A fuel cell feeds the stout little four cylinder and doesn't worry about spillage in the rough and the 4-speed manual transmission has just the right ratios to make it fun at any speed. The suspension was especially designed for long travel to make the ride remarkably cushy and with its diminutive size, even those modes 215/75/15 tires look gigantic. This isn't for everyone, we know that. But if you know what you're looking at, it's a radical piece of hardware that's designed for one thing only: fun in the sun. This 1974 example has that unassuming Beetle look and drives superbly thanks to those many upgrades the Super Beetles received. Finished in traditional Sahara Beige, when you drive this car everybody is your friend. Sure, the Beetle was practical, economical, and sturdy, but the undeniable cuteness factor is what made them a success, both then and today. They were also prone to rust, so finding one as clean as this, that has lived its entire life in the south, is doubly important. From the paint, which was redone not too long ago and still has a great shine, to the chrome and trim, this car shows all the evidence you'd need to prove that it has always been loved. Accessories include the headlight and window visors, both in chrome, and all of it is in excellent condition. Super Beetles are easy to spot with their curved windshields, larger marker lights, and some additional chrome, giving this one a very familiar look. The brown vinyl interior is classic Beetle, with firm, supportive buckets and trademark textured seating surfaces. The stuff wears like iron, and still looks to be in excellent shape inside this charming little coupe. Matching door panels continue the simple VW theme, adding map pockets in the doors that are actually quite useful. Black carpets offer the correct German square-weave pattern and are nicely bound, showing great attention to detail on the part of the factory. A single gauge is all the Beetle ever offered, combining the speedometer with a small fuel level gauge, and the markings are clear. There's a newer AM/FM stereo fitted in the dash, but otherwise this one is completely as the factory built it. The front trunk compartment is also nicely finished with no issues lurking under the fitted cardboard liners and you can see that the repaint was thorough because there's no trace of the original paint anywhere. With looming emissions regulations on the horizon, even the Beetle was not immune, but for 1974, a carburetor was still standard equipment, and that's how most enthusiasts prefer it. The engine is actually an earlier 1970-71 1600 cc flat four with an "AE" block. There's a big generator up top and a correct Bosch distributor cap, the factory-issued air cleaner which looks big enough for a fire truck, and the proper hot air tubes remain in place so it heats and cools like it should. The 4-speed shifts, well, like a VW Beetle, so it might need a little familiarity, but if you've driven one before, you'll feel right at home here. There's no sign of rust underneath that we can tell, even in the primary trouble spots that all Beetles must face like the battery box and under the rear seat, and it is all finished in basic black so it's tidy but remains low maintenance. Simple steel wheels and shiny hubcaps are fitted inside a set of recent 165/80/15 blackwall radials for a period-perfect look that's exactly right on this little Bug. High-quality Beetles won't be this affordable for much longer, the market is moving. Always a favorite car, now the Beetle can also be considered a favorite collector car.
