If you\'ve outgrown your Chevy fascination and a Cadillac is just too much car, take a look at this very handsome 1956 Buick Century Riviera sedan. Dashing two-tone looks, lots of chrome for a perfect \'50s presentation, and four portholes on the side indicating big horsepower under the hood, and you have one of the earliest \"gentleman\'s hot rods.\" This four-door does a fantastic job of disguising its family sedan DNA, with a profile that looks quite sleek and the pillar-less Riviera hardtop design gives it a very appealing profile that looks great from any angle. The two-tone Cambridge Blue and Dover White paint accentuates the Buick\'s dramatic curves, particularly the sweep-spear styling that started in 1942 and continues to this day. Finish quality is very good, with four doors that fit well and paint that shines up beautifully, and there\'s a bit of metallic in the blue so it glows from within when the light hits it just right. The Century remained Buick\'s top performer, and they didn\'t hold back with the advertising, with \'Century\' script on the rear doors and four portholes on the front fenders, denoting a senior car. Of course, as a product of the 1950s, there\'s literally a ton of chrome on the car, all of it in very good condition with a fine front grille that\'s especially cool. You\'ll also note that the tailpipes exit subtly from the lower edges of the rear bumper, another popular \'50s styling trick that works quite well here. There\'s a lot of space in the big Buick\'s interior, which also wears newer upholstery. It\'s not totally correct, but the fabric seating surfaces work with original-style vinyl to create an interior that\'s both comfortable and functional. Door panels are neatly finished with painted garnish moldings and sleek armrests, and the carpets were recently replaced. A ribbon-style speedometer stretches the width of the instrument panel, with auxiliary gauges just below and the original AM radio to its right, putting everything within easy reach. A big steering wheel was more about style than leverage, since power steering makes this Century effortless to drive. The trunk is as large as you\'d expect, and is trimmed with original-looking materials and carries a full-sized spare of indeterminate age. Buick\'s \"Nailhead\" V8 was introduced in 1953, and by 1956 it had grown to 255 horsepower, making it one of the best performers you could buy at any price. Buick capitalized on the engine\'s mountainous torque curve and even with that much sheetmetal around it, this is a very strong performer. Buick Turquoise paint had been in use since just after the war and gives the engine a purposeful look especially under that big air cleaner. The engine bay is quite authentic, including original generator and power steering system, as well as the factory heater boxes on the firewall. Backed by a buttery-smooth Dynaflow automatic transmission, it accelerates like an electric motor and cruises effortlessly at 70 MPH. A bubbly dual exhaust system sounds appropriate for the big sedan and with a uniform layer of undercoating on the chassis, it stays quiet and comfortable inside the car. Flashy red wheels with full wheel covers are fitted with 235/75/15 BFGoodrich Silvertown wide whitewall radials for a period-correct look. Sure, you could always find someone else\'s unfinished project or buy something that needs significant re-work, or you could simply buy this two-tone 1956 Chevy 210 that has a traditional look and plenty of performance and cut straight to the driving part. A lot of shoebox Chevy fans prefer the \'56 models with their clean, almost understated styling, and with all its original trim intact, this handsome 210 2-door sedan makes an excellent choice for this summer\'s cruise night cruiser. The white-over-purple combination isn\'t quite what the factory would have specified, but it follows the original recipe for the split, giving it a great 1950s look with a bit of a twist. Finish quality is quite good, and keeping all the stock sheetmetal intact means that the beautiful work of the restrained \'56 Chevrolet stylists is still on display. The high-gloss paint is certain to draw admirers from across the show field and once it was all buffed and polished, all the factory trim was reinstalled. The 210 is a little less flashy than the Bel Air, and with just a single strip of chrome running form nose tail, but nobody can argue that this isn\'t a great-looking car. Chevrolet script on the quarter panel, those delightfully intricate taillight housings, and wrap around glass are all factory elements that made the transition completely intact. The powerplant is what you\'d expect, and if you want reliable power, it\'s hard to beat a 350 cubic inch Chevy V8. The formula was perfected decades ago, leaving you to the business of hitting the road and having fun with the confidence that when you turn the key, it will spring to life. A Holley double-pumper and a Street Dominator intake manifold make impressive torque and it has an old-school hot rod look thanks to the chrome valve covers and painted engine block. The electrical system features a powerful Optima battery and with power front disc brakes, it\'s safe and confident on the road. The aforementioned 4-speed gearbox feeds what appears to be the original rear end and it exhales through a set of ceramic-coated long-tube headers and Flowmaster mufflers with chrome tips. You\'re definitely going to get noticed in this eyeball-burning yellow shoebox, but it looks so good you\'ll never think twice about it. Fit and finish are quite good, as they should be on a car that will undoubtedly capture everyone\'s attention everywhere it goes. Even up close you find evidence that the guys who built it cared about the results; just check out how well those doors fit and smoothly each panel flows into the next. It makes due without graphics, modified bodywork, and all of its trim fully intact, and the cleaner 210 look works well with the monochromatic color scheme. Tinted windows help with the updated look and offer some great contrast to the paint, and everything that\'s shiny on the car appears to have been treated to a freshening when the car was built. It\'s not perfect, but trailer queens aren\'t what we\'re talking about here, remember? With a warmed-over 265, a traditional two-tone interior, and that beautiful two-tone paint, it retains all the original goodness with a few tweaks to make it a joy to own and drive. And this is another one of those great cars that you just couldn't build yourself for the asking price. Of the shoebox Chevys, the '56 wears two-tone paint the best. With dramatic trim that makes for the perfect natural break point, it shows off best with polarized colors such as the Sierra Gold and Adobe Beige combination on this hardtop, which is how it left the factory. The five-year-old paint looks very good over some very slick bodywork that takes no liberties with the original design and puts everything together much tighter than most of the builds you see. That trim doesn't allow much room for error when aligning the doors, and you'll note that everything is arrow straight. The shine shows off sheetmetal that was blocked and sanded and all that trim appears to have spent a lot of time under a polishing wheel. Bel Air script, beautiful bumpers (including a 1956 station wagon rear bumper), and a crisply rendered hood ornament are all evidence of careful plating work, an expense that any restorer should dread but the buyer of this car should be thrilled to see. The copper and tan interior re-creates a period feel with pleated inserts and ornate door panels. New carpets with properly bound edges suggest that someone really cared about doing this one right, and all the hard parts like the dash and window moldings have been painted with the same Sierra Gold paint as the body. The original gauges show beautiful, crisp markings and to round out the factory gear, and there's a period-style under-dash A/C unit. The original AM radio remains in the dash, although it's not hooked up and a cruiser like this deserves an upgrade. Open the trunk and you'll find a correct mat and a full-sized spare and jack assembly. The engine is a 265 cubic inch V8 which is, indeed, this car's original engine. It's a correct Power Pack setup with a 4-barrel carburetor, and it was rebuilt about 5000 miles ago. A few upgrades include the dual snorkel air cleaner, a modern alternator, and a big radiator up front, which is assisted by an electric fan to keep everything nice and cool. It has also been fitted with power steering and power front disc brakes with a dual master cylinder, so it handles and stops far better than new. The 2-speed PowerGlide automatic transmission shifts well and with 3.36 gears in the rear end, it's a fine highway cruiser that is relaxed at speed. A rumbling dual exhaust system gives it a great personality, and those 8-inch Corvette Rally wheels with 225/60/15 blackwall radials fill the fenders perfectly. Up for sale is this beautiful 1956 Chevy nomad, finished in sierra gold and adobe beige. Having been painted sometime around 1990, it shows a minor amount of patina, but over-all is very acceptable. It has been a California and Arizona car most all it's life and is totally rust free. Engine is an LT1 from a 1995 Trans Am with 1996 Corvette LT4 heads and fuel injection. It is freshly rebuilt with about 5000 miles and runs with no issues. Transmission is a fresh 700R4 and differential is a Ford 8.8 inch with 3.27:1 gears. With this combination the fuel mileage is about 23 on the highway and 20 driving locally.The upper control arms have been replaced with tubular units, steering box is a CPP 500 unit along with dropped spindles with GM style disc brakes. Wheels are 18 and 20 inch Budniks. The interior is redone in original stock style using a kit fromC.A.R.S. Inc. All chrome and stainless are excellent. If you've been searching for a striking '50s showpiece, but want something that's a heck of a lot more usable than some high dollar hot rod, this Chevy's excellent combination of vintage style and timeless class simply can't be beat! BODYWORK/TRIM This well-traveled convertible is a fully sorted road warrior that combines everything great about '50s Americana with a correct drivetrain and retro-cool aesthetics. The car's detailed, ground-up restoration veils a rock-solid profile in correct Nassau and Harbor Blue 2-stage. That pigment rides under factory-spec trim, which reflects like-new glass and a tight white top. And presently, the car rolls as a subdued combination of classic lines, good times and old school swagger. ENGINE Since this Bel Air is more parade queen than stoplight warrior, it should come as no surprise that the car's 265 cubic inch Super Turbo Fire V8 is essentially a gimmick-free exercise in factory accuracy and antique showmanship. Look to the top of the mill and you'll find a reliable Rochester carburetor that mixes oxygen from an oil bath air cleaner with fuel that's supplied by stainless fluid lines and a traditional mechanical pump. At the sides of that carburetor, stamped and silver-detailed valve covers cap restored exhaust manifolds that are piped in to free-breathing tubes. Behind that carburetor, a traditional points distributor shoots fire through loomed Mileage Plus plug wires. And in front of that carburetor, a tagged radiator circulates coolant through GM-branded hoses and authentic squeeze clamps. In addition to its smooth powerplant, the fully detailed engine bay features dual horns, a Delco-Remy generator and a tagged Delco yellow cap battery. And aesthetically, Satin Black fenders bridge the gap between the mill's deep red block and the car's Harbor Blue exterior. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION As is the case with most '50s-era GM cruisers, that engine is backed by a familiar Powerglide 2-speed, which sends torque to a highway-friendly rear end. That rebuilt drivetrain rides a completely restored suspension, which, along with the car's tight manual steering and firm drum brakes, provides a great combination of old school ride and handling characteristics. That clean suspension rolls traditional wire wheels, which twist 205/75R15 Coker Classic whitewalls. An authentic 'snap, crackle, pop' engine note is provided by throaty turbo mufflers. Out back, an aftermarket sway bar frames a fresh stainless fuel tank. And in a break with tradition, this Bel Air's solid floors have been sealed in a thick layer of Harbor Blue pigment. INTERIOR Featuring a pleasant array of accents, this tri-five's correct, 2-tone interior is one of its most impressive traits. At the center of the car, firm bench seats wear taut vinyl skin that's highlighted by bright chrome hardware. In front of those seats, a classy dash hangs clean, bowtie-branded gauges next to a simple, pushbutton radio. On the doors, textured panels found traditional chrome handles around stainless trim and sculpted armrests. At the floor, clean California Carpet rides under rugged, Bel Air-branded mats. The driver stays connected to the road through a large-diameter steering wheel, which spins a full chrome horn ring around a gold Chevrolet centerpiece. And the passengers stow their essentials in a fully restored trunk that anchors a full-size spare tire between a correct jack, fresh decals and a new mat.
