All of the chassis' parts are free of substantial weathering, reinforcing the idea that it's been a very long time since this 500's seen daily-driver duty. Braking is quick and adequate thanks to fresh drums that occupy all for corners of that chassis. And on the outside of those drums, correctly painted wheels spin G78-14 Coker Classic whitewalls around classy chrome hub caps. Two-tone paint is legendary for its characteristically 50s feel. And when paired with this convertible's airy interior, it creates the perfect culmination of style and sophistication. Thanks to the car's high quality restoration, its pleated bench seats will be livable for years to come. There's tight carpet that, thanks to thick floor mats, still features rich black loops. The Fairlane lives in the shadow of its Chevrolet competition and its "retractable" siblings, although the Fairlane has tidier proportions, all of which make a compelling case for this gorgeous ragtop. Repainted in original code F, Starmist Blue, the car looks spectacular today. The paint is acrylic urethane, which means it'll last practically forever and there's a shine on this car that Ford designers could only dream about. 1957 Fords had all-new styling that many feel is a big improvement over the earlier models, with hooded headlights, a wrap-around windshield, and that dramatic sweeping trim dividing the bodywork. And if it's fins and chrome you're after, you've come to the right place, with a massive front bumper/grille assembly, that gorgeous stainless side trim, and jet-inspired taillights out back, all of which make the Ford look like nothing else on the road. And to make a big car seem even longer, there's a continental kit out back and custom fender skirts that give it a long, low stance. Finish quality is quite good and the Ford's forward-canted looks give it the appearance of speed, even when it's standing still, so you'll find it hard to resist on a sunny day. The two-tone blue and white vinyl interior was restored when the bodywork was done, and makes a bright '50s fashion statement. The pleated door panels match the seat inserts and use traditional patterns to really take you back in time. Ford embraced the jet age with their dashboard styling, including the arched speedometer and a steering wheel flanked by two groups of three switches on either side. The original AM radio is gone, replaced by a far more functional AM/FM unit in the original location with a remote CD player, and it appears that no OEM components were harmed in the installation. The massive trunk is fully lined with the usual gray mouse fur material, along with a full-sized spare and jack assembly. A fresh white power vinyl top was installed as well, and it retracts easily behind the rear seat and hides under a matching white boot for the ultimate in open-air cruising. This Fairlane also packs Ford's top engine for 1957, the 312 cubic inch "Thunderbird Special" V8. With a 4-barrel carburetor and dual exhaust, it moves the luxurious ragtop with effortless ease and a crisp V8 burble from the twin tailpipes. Rebuilt about 2000 miles ago and nicely detailed with plenty of chrome and Ford Blue Paint, the engine bay isn't totally stock but it sure looks good. Key it up and it fires quickly, settling into an even idle that makes you want to ease it down the highway. The 2-speed Ford-O-Matic automatic transmission was rebuilt at the same time and out back there's an indestructible Ford 9-inch with highway-friendly gears that make this a fantastic cross-country cruiser. And for safety, the braking system has been upgraded to a dual master cylinder with front discs, giving this heavy ragtop a much better safety rating. Custom chrome wheels with baby moon hubcaps and a set of recent whitewall radials give it just the right look. Go ahead and price a few '57 Bel Airs and Ford Retractables, then take another look at this Fairlane. It's A LOT of car for the money. Between those fenders, a chrome-detailed hood leads the eye to tinted glass that's framed by thick trim, cleared by bright wipers and reflected in a correct mirror. Below that mirror, classy door handles, subtle fender skirts and polished rocker guards perfectly complement elaborate side sweeps, expressive "Victoria" scripts and small "THUNDERBIRD V8" emblems. And opposite those emblems, a pivotal "Fairlane" badge rides between chrome-trimmed, jet-inspired taillights and a second wraparound bumper. ENGINE Hoist this Ford's lightweight hood and you'll find a correct, 292 cubic inch Thunderbird V8 that, during the car's extensive restoration, was bored .030 over, fully rebuilt and fitted with 12-volt electronic ignition. Introduced in 1955, this stout little Y-block remained an option in blue oval staples well into the mid-1970s. At the top of the bright orange mill, a familiar silver air cleaner draws wind into an updated, 390cfm Holley, which is stacked between a Lokar throttle linkage and fresh stainless fuel lines. Atomized octane passes through a stock intake manifold to correct, cast iron heads, which cap a balanced rotating assembly. At the front of those heads, a rebuilt generator and correct fan spin in unison as a restored radiator keeps things cool via pliable hoses. And spark comes courtesy of a traditional points distributor, which sequences fire through 7mm High Temperature Static Suppression cables. From its black, Thunderbird-branded valve covers to its fresh Autolite battery topper, this cruiser's glossy engine bay presents a clean, authentic appearance. And best of all, the 202 horsepower mill fires instantly and sounds surprisingly beefy through cast iron exhaust manifolds and factory-style tail pipes. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION At the bottom of this Victoria, a fully sorted undercarriage houses professionally restored floors that are bolted to lots of factory-correct components. Nice enough to show but still fully drivable, this is the perfect compromise for enthusiasts who like to display their classic AND enjoy occasional weekend getaways. Behind the aforementioned Y-block, the car's modern AOD 4-speed, a rebuilt unit originally sourced from a 1991 Mustang GT, sends power to a factory Ford axle. A sturdy suspension remains in its original configuration with coils up front, leafs out back and traditional manual steering. Braking is quick and adequate thanks to fresh drums at all four corners. It's actually very cool to take a mundane machine like a station wagon and give it an eyeball-popping makeover, and the juxtaposition of the two makes this a ride that everyone loves. Add in a strong-running 289 and a comfortable interior and you get a car that's at home just about everywhere it goes. No, it's not subtle but it is beautifully done. You can see the hundreds of hours of work that went into the build everywhere you look and this is not some quickie paint job on an old beater. No, this is professional-grade work that cost cubic dollars and rightfully deserves to be out winning trophies just for being pretty. Of course it helps to start with good base stock, so a clean, rust-free wagon was the starting point and it was rebuilt from there. The paint is vivid bright orange, which, all by itself would have been arresting. But they added beautifully done airbrushed flames that are expertly rendered somewhat in the style of Dave Lavalee. The white top adds just the right touch, reminding us that this is a '60s station wagon after all, and most of the original trim remains in place, including the sweeping side moldings that make it look sporty, not frumpy. A clean grille, jet-exhaust taillights, and stock window trim all make this Fairlane instantly recognizable, even with the paint job. The interior is a bit more sedate but no less beautifully done. Two-tone tan and brown vinyl is a great choice with the bright orange bodywork, allowing it to be both more OEM in appearance yet subtly custom without going over-the-top. Three rows of seats are a familiar sight in '60s wagons and we love that they kept the rear-facing third row, which makes everyone smile. The original Ford dash is intact, joined by a set of white-faced gauges down low that work rather well with the Ford's original dials. The most noteworthy modification is the custom B&M shifter, but otherwise it's largely as Ford built it in 1964, right down to the original AM radio in the dash. There's a slightly oversized steering wheel on the stock column and the flame theme continues on the dash and door panels. Tan carpets were used throughout to give it a more plush feel and with the rear seat folded, it's still a wagon, so it'll carry just about anything you can throw at it. Just for fun, they installed a solid-lifter Hi-Po 289 cubic inch V8. It's got a wicked small block snarl that's more Mustang than station wagon, and that's all part of the fun. Finned Cobra valve covers have orange faces to go with the bodywork, but otherwise the engine bay looks quite stock, from the chrome air cleaner to the black painted engine block, which was correct for 1964. It's a tidy engine bay, clean but not over-done, again in stark contrast to the bodywork, which I think was the intention. It's linked to a C4 3-speed automatic transmission and the original rear end and exhales through a great sounding exhaust system that's still muffled enough to make this wagon a top-flight highway cruiser. The stance is lowered just enough to give it a bit of a rake and it sits on Mustang-spec 16-inch wheels with 225/45/16 front and 225/50/16 rear Kumho radials. If you dig wagons, this one will probably really light your fire. Beautifully done, fun to drive, and always the center of attention, it's everything cool about hot rods with a dose of practicality mixed in. An authentic '66 Fairlane Lightweight would go six figures and then some but you can have this car for less than half the price! This car just underwent a painstaking nut & bolt restoration and is one of the nicest Fairlane's we've ever seen at Streetside Classics. This car was built with some rare parts as well, such as a full fiberglass hood and even fiberglass front fenders! This is an extremely detailed restoration with all chrome and trim pieces either refinished or replaced at significant cost to the seller. To make things better, the drivetrain has only about 1,000 miles on everything and has been properly broken in for the next owner. This Ford takes on an appearance somewhere in between a Fairlane GTA and the ultimate sleeper coupe. The body is beautifully finished in Wimbledon White that is understated in many situations but really pops in the sunlight. Again, this car has been restored with a superior attention to detail that can be seen in everything from the panel gaps to the chrome trim that has been expertly polished or replaced. That's a key point with these cars because the Fairlane's hallmarks are the bright wide bumpers and the shining grille as long as the horizon. The hint of rear-leaning stance makes this one look like a gasser ready to race, and there's no mistaking the lightweight fiberglass hood with hoodpins and GTA style scoop. But those steel wheels with original Ford stapled hubcaps still give this one that cool '60s sleeper appearance. Step inside, and almost everything will feel brand new...because it is! This is not just about restoring the major pieces like the seats, carpets, and door panels, but also this includes the little things that really make the difference like window stripping and sun visors. Your passengers might have plenty of space to spread out and stay in comfortable this heated/vented Fairlane, but it's apparent from the moment you get behind the wheel that this is a true driver's classic. The original gauge package is supplemented by a large SunPro tachometer mounted on the steering column. Also within eyesight is an auxiliary readout package with oil, water, and battery. All of this is a good indication that there is an exceptional motor worth keeping you constantly updated. Under the hood is a massive Ford 410 cubic-inch motor that has been bored .040 over (making total displacement 417.) This is barely broken in with 1,000 miles on it since built. Plus, it has a host of performance goodies that includes a four-barrel carburetor, Edelbrock hi-rise intake, and a mild camshaft. It breathes nicely through a set of long tube headers that connect to a MagnaFlow dual exhaust. The total package is dressed well with chrome on the valve covers and air cleaner, but more importantly, it makes over 450 horsepower (growling loud enough to let everyone know it, too!) You don't have to worry about keeping this monster motor cool thanks to a four-core aluminum radiator with electric fan. All this power gets to the ground via Ford's stout C6 three-speed automatic on its way to the Ford nine-inch rear end running a versatile 3.50 ratio. Control is also well in hand with front disc brakes and modern BF Goodrich rubber at all four corners. Beautiful, comfortable, and wickedly fast - this Fairlane is everything you want in a custom build. Best of all, you'll be able to be the first one to really break it in since its body off restoration. Take a look at the undercarriage on this one and you'll why it's quite possibly one of the best 1966 Fairlane's in existence. Indeed, it might just be the finest Fairlane available today.
