They took the regular W201 190E and W124 300E and added their own speical touches to the engine, suspension, body work and wheels before reselling them to the Japanese market as the Tommy Kaira M19 and M30E . Very rarely seen them for sale due very low production numbers.. They started with a regular W201 190E with the 2.0 liter M102 engine and added their signature touch on almost every part of the car. Starting under the hood, they ported the head, bumped up the compression, added a new cam, aluminum headers and finished it off with a true dual exhaust that bumped up power to 153 horsepower. Suspension got the same treatment with a Koni sports setup for a more aggressive stance. The interior remained mainly unchanged outside of a signature Tommy kaira steering wheel. On the outside, this W201 received new bumpers, BBS RS wheels, and Tommy kaira badges with a large decal down the side of the car. The early model 190E's have a thin body trim and is much more appealing in my opinion rather than the thick body skirt look of the 190E's from 1989-1992. 1988 was the last year with the thin body trim, but first with tilt sunroof standard, as well as the "check engine light" ODB1 computer diagnostic system, only equipped on california cars. Let alone to mention the astonishing color combo of 702 Smoke Silver Metallic and 175 Creme Beige MB tex vinyl. This car is 100% original quality paint and interior. The steering wheel is firm and thick, not soft and squishy from years left out in the california sun. The horsehair in the seats are firm and comfortable, just as they were brand new in 1988. The dash is very clean, yet shows 3 small cracks near the speakers from age sadly. The air conditioner cools you immediately to comfort. The instrument cluster flaunts slightly faded orange needles but overall in outstanding condition. You will not find 1 single stain on any square inch of the carpets or seats on the entire interior, no food is allowed inside the vehicle. The car does not smell as some older Mercedes-Benz do, but a pleasant clean smell. The original radio and antenna function 100%. All 8 glass windows on the vehicle are original Sekurit or Sigla, with 1 blemish to the drivers side windshield which has been "glue" patched at some point. The vehicle comes with a nice large stack of original dealership 1988 190E brochures as well as manuals, and original dealership license plate insert from Caliber Motors in Anaheim Hills in 1988. The handling, shocks, and suspension, are ever so tight much as a Mercedes-Benz can be expected to feel. All door and body panels exemplify their original VIN# sticker, except the right rear quarter panel, the trunk lid, and rear bumper, were all replaced by Mercedes-Benz in 1997 [hence the european warning triangle in the trunk lid] No noticeable body works signs whatsoever. FLAWS: Unfortunately with any vehicle 27 years old, flaws are expected. Although there are hardly any major flaws on this car. Now I understand that the new owner may be purchasing this 190 from several miles away, and a pre-purchase viewing will only be initiated if the car fits such criteria, which i will try my best to expose in the photos. ***Please note, vehicle was purchased with all damage previously done***1. 3 deep Scuff/Scratch; Lower left rear quarter panel and left rear corner of bumper.2. Oil changed religiously every 3k. All work done by the best Mercedes shop in the area. Sun roof lubed 3x per year and works without flaw. AC blows cold. Door locks all operate. Engine purrs. Instrument cluster fully functional. A few flaws( left rear window switch inop, defrost blows hot air) Beautifully running car that i hate to sell, but I have orders to get rid of a car. Why the asking price of $6500? The engine has at least another 250,000 miles on it, and it wasn't cheap to get the car as updated as it currently is. That said, automobile diesel motors that can burn virtually "anything" are a rare breed, while all the new cars (TDI's) have a thin margin of error for diesel fuel blend with alcohol and have finicky exhaust emissions controls that can shut your engine off without warning! (There are cities in the USA where it is increasingly impossible to find diesel with less than 20% alcohol because the truckers and old MB's owners can burn this stuff... the big stations cater specifically to the truckers... but the new TDI's cannot without voiding the car's warranty and clogging the emissions controls. The dealerships can tell when you have burned the wrong blend and you are on your on if you do! ) This car has no emissions controls. It has no GPS system, blue tooth or other invasive microwave-devices that can wreak havoc with your health. I guess you could convert it to run on salad dressing if you desire. MB 1989 190D is an exceptionally clean daily driver. Newly rebuilt transmission. Little need to plug in during a cold northeast winter! Many recent parts replaced to include tie rods & drag links, muffler, flex disks, front struts, steering dampener, wheel bearings,brake pads, rotors, tires( Conti's), antenna mast, windshield, ABS module, AC compressor etc. Car gets 35-37mpg combined. Oil changed religiously @ every 3k. All work done by the best Mercedes shop in the area. Sun roof lubed 3x per year and works without flaw. AC blows cold. Door locks all operate. Engine purrs. Instrument cluster fully functional. Seats are MB-Tex which holds up much better than leather. Abundant leg room for us long legged drivers,that you cannot find in the newer cars. Beautifully running car that i hate to sell, but I have orders to get rid of a car. A few flaws( left rear window inop, | defrost blows hot air | one sliver of rust | cruise control inop ) Why the asking price of $6500? The 1989 190 was the test bed for future generations of MB's and was an over-engineered and very solid car. The engine starts easier than the previous generation of MB diesels and the multi-link rear suspension became the model for all future production cars. These engines can easily last 500,000. That said, automobile diesel motors that can burn virtually "anything" are a rare breed, while all the new cars (TDI's) have a thin margin of error for diesel fuel blend with alcohol and have finicky exhaust emissions controls that can shut your engine off without warning! (There are cities in the USA where it is increasingly impossible to find diesel with less than 20% alcohol because the truckers and old MB's owners can burn this stuff and the big stations cater specifically to the truckers (and old MB's;>). The new TDI's cannot burn this fuel without voiding the car's warranty, damaging the emissions controls and fuel pump. The dealerships' diagnostics can tell when you have burned the wrong blend and you are on your on if you do! ) This car has no emissions controls to worry about at sticker time. It has no GPS system, blue tooth or other invasive microwave-devices that can wreak havoc with your health. I guess you could convert it to run on salad dressing if you desire. In a pinch, unlike with newer cars, I can easily siphon fuel from this car, thus using it to tanker fuel for my diesel home-backup generator.
