Unveiled in 1954 Turin Motor Show the Giulietta “Juliet” was one of Alfa’s most successful family cars. Multiple versions were offered during its’ 11 year production, such as the Berlina salon, Sprint coupe, and Spider roadster. The Spider roadster was styled by legendary design house Pininfarina, which makes the Spider model one of the most desirable Giulietta. This Giulietta has been set-up for performance driving, perfect for hill-climbs and track events. Painted in bright yellow with black ascent’s no one will overlook this little Alfa Spider on the road or track. Since this car has been used for performance events the hood, trunk lid, and fender flares have been replaced with lighter fiberglass mounted using rivets. After much deliberation, I’ve decided to sell my 1959 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider. I’ve owned and enjoyed this car for the past 8 years, but life is short, garage space is finite and it’s time to let another enthusiast enjoy this fun little car while I move onto something else. Description: According to the Alfa Romeo archives, this car, VIN AR149506512, was completed on April 8th, 1959 and imported into the US by Hoffman Motor Car Co. on May 12th of the same year. As a 750 series car, it features the purest iteration of Pininfarina’s original Giulietta styling, including the desirable shorter wheelbase, smaller tail lights and absence of “wing windows”. The car retains its original white exterior color, though it was repainted under prior ownership. The car presents quite nicely, but is not so pristine that it cannot be driven and enjoyed. Overall, the body is in good shape with some small chips and imperfections. There is a small dent below the right tail light and a very minor dimple on the hood. Both were present when I bought the car and could be easily repaired, but, as I purchased the car to drive, not show, I’ve chosen to leave them as is. The interior of the car is a definite highlight with fresh red upholstery, clear gauge faces, correct knobs, radio blanking plate and a nice crinkle finish on the dash top. There are two small cracks in the rim of the steering wheel, but, from what I understand, this is not uncommon. The car’s drivetrain has been upgraded to a slightly later, 105 series, 1600cc engine with 5 speed transmission, engine block# AR00536*11262*. This upgrade strikes a good balance between retaining the original feel and underhood aesthetic, while providing a satisfying increase in power and drivability. Under my ownership, I’ve installed a Pertronix electronic ignition kit (visually undetectable unless you remove the distributor cap) and a Weber DGV carburetor. Both modifications improve power and reliability, but both are completely reversible if they are not to your liking. To that end, I am happy to also include the previously installed Solex APAIG carburetor and air filter housing. These are significant, as even a reproduction Giulietta air filter housing sells for >$800. As might be expected of a 56 year old, hand built car, there are a few other minor issues worth mentioning: • Fuel gauge doesn’t work reliably • Driver’s side exterior door handle doesn’t work (though interior handle does) • Instrument lights don’t illuminate • Cabin heater doesn’t work • Trunk lid doesn’t latch • There are some marks on the windshield corresponding to the arc of the wipers • As with most older Italian cars, the engine leaks a bit of oil Additional items included in the sale: • Fitted car cover • Miscellaneous spares including the aforementioned carburetor and air filter housing • Giulietta shop manual • Laminated Giulietta wiring diagram • Car disk DVD with shop manual, parts book and various related literature and images Please contact me BEFORE clicking “Buy It Now”. Considered by many to be the most beautiful of the Spider cars, and amongest the most beautiful cabriolets ever designed by the house of Pininfarina, also known as a "Boat-Tail Spider". I think this is the best looking Alfa Spider year because of the delicate relationship of the grille and bumpers, to the aerodynamic body. It is a rolling work of art. This is a nicely restored rust-free Southern Car, know living in Sullivan County, NY. The motor and drive-train are tight and fluid, and there is no smoke or clatter or unwanted vibrations. The fuel injected twin-cam 1779 cc motor starts easily, and runs extremely quietly at idle, and the performance on the road is fantastic. The gearbox functions as it did in 1969, and the steering and 4-wheel disc braking and tracking are as new. It is truly a joy to drive. This "Duetto" has a beautiful newer paint job in the original charcoal grey color, a nice black interior, and navy blue convertible top. It has a tonneau cover in the trunk, and also includes the original steering wheel. Even as late as 1965, Road & Track was still singing the praises of the 1600cc Giulia Spider Veloce. Nevertheless, for the 1966 model year, Alfa began selling its replacement, named the “Duetto,” via a contest that Alfa ran with the Italian public. It was the last project in which Batista Pininfarina was personally involved. And while widely viewed as classic design today, it was met with some controversy when new. Power was initially from the familiar Alfa 1600cc twin-cam engine that powered the last Giulias. Emission laws affected Alfa particularly hard and 1968 was a lost year in the U.S. The car returned for 1969 with a 1750cc engine and SPICA mechanical fuel injection. 1970 was another lost year and 1971 saw the car return with its lovely boat tail chopped off. The so-called Kamm-tail spider continued on basically unchanged (save for bigger bumpers and a 250cc boost in displacement) until 1982 when electronic injection was introduced and in 1983 styling was freshened slightly. Interior changes were about it until 1991 when the final (and quite successful) cleanup of the design took place prior to its discontinuation in 1994. All Spiders are brisk performers with sub-10 second 0-60 times and stellar convertible tops. Parts are readily available and while they are more complex and don’t tolerate “fools with tools” as readily as an MGB, they are more rewarding to drive. Rust was a major issue in all cars prior to the final series of 1991-94 cars. Last year in which the spider was built, only 1,956 were built in 1993 which was 1.6% of the total production from 1970 to 1993. The last big change was in 1990 with the Bosch Motronic electronic fuel injection with an electric fan. Two owner, California Alfa Spider! Clean CarFax, no accidents. Very quick and responsive, motor runs excellent. Great turnkey driver with A/C and electric windows. It is in great mechanical & cosmetic condition. It comes with a very rare hard top and a soft top. Garage kept and very well maintained. The running gear/drivetrain is unmodified and in exceptional condition, along with the suspension and braking system. The gear box is perfect. The under panels and rockers are very solid and rust-free. Interior is in great condition. All gauges function. Both front & rear bumpers are in excellent condition. Expensive at introduction at $4000, almost the same as a Jaguar E-Type, it afforded entry into the world of Italian design and performance, i.e. “the Poor Man’s Ferrari”. It remained in production for almost 30 years, and until recently was Alfa’s last rear-wheel-drive car. The Spider was offered in three trim levels; the $20,500 Quadrifoglio Verde (“Four-Leaf Clover”, Alfa’s long-time good luck charm), the $17,000 Veloce, and the $14,000 entry-level Graduate. All were mechanically identical, with a five-speed and DOHC 2 liter under the hood; the differences were in the trim levels and materials. The Graduate made do with steel wheels and trim rings vs. (optional) alloys, vinyl roof and seats instead of cloth and leather, optional A/C, and manual-wind windows. Marketed to relate to the car Dustin Hoffman drove in 1967’s The Graduate (the movie that put Alfa “on the map” in the USA), it was a very popular model. After a naming contest which drew over 100,000 entries, the name that was selected presented legal copyright issues so Alfa Romeo stuck with the simple Spider 1600. A simple name belied the successful combination of very pretty lines on a successful chassis, so successful that the Spider remained in production for almost 30 years with very few changes. In 1970 Alfa introduced the Series 2 which featured minor changes to the interior and exterior, notably the squared off trunk lid and grill. The engine was upgraded to a 1962 CC engine and the car was renamed the 2000 Spider Veloce. 1982 saw the introduction of the Series 3 Spider, which featured a black rubber spoiler on the trunk lid but also introduced a 2.0-liter engine with Bosch Fuel Injection.
