The2015 Audi A6 feels notably lighter on its feet and competes well in the powertrain department, too. We're also fond of the impressively sporty Cadillac CTS and the polished 2015 Lexus GS 350. For a traditional luxury experience, the 2015 Mercedes-Benz E-Class beckons, while the Jaguar XF holds dark-horse appeal, making up for its dated interior with spirited performance and a distinctive character. But the 2015 5 Series remains an excellent all-around luxury sedan, and that's why it's still at the head of this hotly contested class.Body Styles, Trim Levels, and OptionsThe 2015 BMW 5 Series is a midsize luxury sedan available in four main trim levels that correspond to engine choice: 528i, 535i, 535d and 550i. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with "xDrive" all-wheel drive optional across the board. The ActiveHybrid 5 and high-performance M5 models are reviewed separately.The base 528i starts with the four-cylinder engine, 17-inch wheels, adjustable drive settings (for steering, throttle and automatic transmission response), adaptive xenon headlights with LED accent lights, LED foglights, adaptive brake lights, automatic wipers, heated mirrors, a sunroof, cruise control and auto-dimming mirrors. Inside there's dual-zone automatic climate control, dark wood trim, ambient lighting, 10-way power front seats (with four-way power lumbar), driver memory functions, split-folding rear seats, leatherette premium vinyl upholstery and a power tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel. Technology features include BMW Assist emergency communications, the iDrive electronics interface (with a 10.2-inch widescreen display and smartphone app integration), a navigation system, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a 10-speaker sound system with a CD player, HD radio, an auxiliary audio jack and a USB port.The 535i adds a six-cylinder engine, 18-inch wheels and leather upholstery, but is otherwise similarly equipped.The 535d is equipped exactly like the 535i, only with a diesel-powered six-cylinder engine.The 550i upgrades to a V8 engine, a hands-free power trunk lid (opening or closing automatically when you pass your foot under the rear bumper), keyless entry and ignition, a sport version of the automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera and 20-way multicontour power front seats (with four-way power lumbar).Engines aside, the standard features on the higher trims can be added to lower trims as options. Notably, the Premium package (528i, 535i and 535d) includes the hands-free power trunk lid, keyless entry and ignition, satellite radio and (for the 528i) leather upholstery. The 550i offers the Executive package, which adds soft-closing doors, ceramic-trimmed interior controls, a leather dashboard, a head-up display, an upgraded instrument cluster display and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with satellite radio. Most of the Executive package's contents can be added as individual options to lesser trims.There are two major equipment lines available on 2015 BMW 5 Series models: Luxury and M Sport. The Luxury Line includes 18-inch (528i) or 19-inch wheels, upgraded leather upholstery and anthracite wood trim. The M Sport includes staggered-width 18-inch (528i) or 19-inch wheels, "shadowline" dark exterior trim (instead of the default chrome accents), an aerodynamic body kit, aluminum interior trim, a dark headliner and an M steering wheel. The Individual Composition package (not available on 528i) provides some of the same cosmetic upgrades as the M Sport package, adding different wheels and a faux-suede headliner.Available across the board, the Cold Weather package provides retractable headlight washers, heated front and rear seats and a heated steering wheel, while the Lighting package features full LED adaptive headlights with automatic high-beam control. The Driver Assistance Plus package sets you up with a blind-spot warning system, a lane-departure warning system, side and top-view parking cameras and a forward collision mitigation system. The Dynamic Handling package, available on all models except the 528i, includes adaptive suspension dampers (with adjustable settings) and active stabilizer bars.Stand-alone options include adaptive cruise control, an automated parallel-parking system (called Parking Assistant), an active steering system (featuring rear-wheel steering), an infrared night-vision display with pedestrian detection, four-zone automatic climate control, a Bang & Olufsen audio system, a power rear sunshade (with manual rear side-window sunshades) and a rear-seat entertainment system with twin tilt-adjustable 9.2-inch screens on the front seatbacks.Powertrains and PerformanceThe 2015 BMW 528i is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 240 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard, and an automatic stop-start function shuts down the engine when the car stops in order to save fuel. In Edmunds performance testing, a 528i went from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds, an average showing for a base-model midsize luxury sedan. EPA fuel economy ratings are 27 mpg combined (23 city/34 highway) with rear-wheel drive and 26 mpg combined (22/33) with xDrive all-wheel drive.The 535i steps up to a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 rated at 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission and automatic stop-start is standard. In Edmunds performance testing, a rear-drive 535i with the automatic went from zero to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds, another competitive result. Fuel economy for rear-drive models is 24 mpg combined (20 city/31 highway) with the AWD model getting 23 mpg combined (20/29).The 535d features a turbocharged 3.0-liter diesel inline-6 that produces 255 hp and 413 lb-ft of torque. The eight-speed automatic and automatic stop-start are standard. In Edmunds performance testing, a rear-drive 535d went from zero to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds. EPA-estimated fuel economy is an outstanding 30 mpg combined (26/38) with rear-wheel drive and 30 mpg combined (26/37) with xDrive.Finally, the 550i boasts a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 that cranks out 445 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. A sport version of the eight-speed automatic transmission is standard (it's optional on the other trims), as is auto stop-start. EPA ratings are 20 mpg combined (17/25) with rear-wheel drive and 19 mpg combined (16/25) with xDrive.SafetyStandard safety equipment for the 2015 BMW 5 Series includes stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. The braking system also periodically wipes the brake rotors dry in wet conditions and automatically snugs the brake pads to the rotors in preparation when you abruptly lift off the throttle. Moreover, the standard adaptive brake lights warn traffic behind you by getting brighter when you apply more brake force. Also standard is the BMW Assist emergency communications system, which includes automatic crash notification, an SOS button, remote door unlock and stolen vehicle recovery.Parking sensors and a rearview camera are standard on the 550i and optional on other models via the Driver Assistance package (which also includes the head-up display and upgraded instrument cluster). A deluxe side and top-view parking camera system is available via the Driver Assistance Plus package, which additionally provides a blind-spot warning system, a lane-departure warning system and a forward collision mitigation system with automatic braking. Finally, the optional night vision system can identify potential hazards (including pedestrians) that are out of regular headlight range.In Edmunds brake testing, various 5 Series models with optional summer run-flat tires came to a stop from 60 mph in distances ranging from 110-114 feet. Those are very good numbers, but they're pretty typical for sport sedans wearing summer tires. Most 5 Series models are equipped with all-season run-flat tires and will have slightly longer braking distances as a result.In government crash testing, the 5 Series earned an overall rating of five out of five stars, with a four-star rating for frontal impacts and a five-star rating for side impacts. The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the 5 Series its highest rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength tests, while the 5 Series' seat/head restraint design was rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts. In the small-overlap frontal-offset test however, the 5 Series received the second-lowest rating of "Marginal".Interior Design and Special FeaturesThe 5 Series cabin is attractive and trimmed with consistently high-quality materials, though it's not flashy. Elegant restraint is the name of the game here, and it's a game that BMW has played to perfection for decades. The instrument panel is a clear connection to the company's past with its classic twin analog gauges. Another heritage touch is the dashboard's understated center stack (the portion that includes the climate and audio controls), which cants toward the driver for a sportier, more intimate feel.The central nervous system of every 5 Series is the iDrive interface, consisting of a high-resolution 10.2-inch display in the center of the dashboard and a rotary controller on the center console. The current version includes a touchpad on top of the controller that accepts "handwritten" finger inputs. It's pretty user-friendly, but some rival systems seem to require fewer presses or twirls of their controllers to get what you want.The base front seats are comfortable in their own right, but the available 20-way multicontour seats just might be the best in the business, providing an incredible range of adjustments and sublime support for all driving scenarios. Rear outboard passengers will find satisfactory space in all directions, even if they're 6-footers, and the rear seats themselves are thoughtfully contoured and padded. Trunk space is relatively limited, however, measuring 14 cubic feet.Driving ImpressionsIf the 2015 BMW 5 Series were judged on its engines alone, few would question its "Ultimate Driving Machine" status. The 528i's turbo-4 punches well above its weight, and the six-cylinder 535i is a paradigm of smoothness. But the pick of the litter may well be the diesel-powered 535d, which is as fleet as the 535i and serves up 25 percent better fuel economy to boot. If you don't mind filling up more frequently, the 445-hp 550i throws down rocket-ship acceleration that's forceful enough to make an M5 fan think twice. Less appealing is the vibration you get when the auto stop-start system fires the engines back up from rest. Other automakers seemed to have figured out how to make their systems smoother.We also don't like how the 5 Series never feels as nimble or precise as we'd like when going around turns, even with all the settings at their sportiest. The steering also lacks the precision for which it used to be renowned. So that's the bad news. The good news is that the 5 Series is blessed with a smooth, absorbent ride quality. If a luxurious day-to-day experience is more important to you than maximum performance, you're going to like how the 2015 5 Series operates. race-bred, homologated collectible come along at a price under 6-figures. With approximately 125 produced for the world and only 75 coming to the U.S., it is no wonder these cars are becoming so sought after among collectors and enthusiasts. History of the Lightweight: The 1995 M3 Lightweight (BMW NA model code 9520) was produced between August of 1995 and October of 1995. This street-legal model eliminated several comfort and convenience items for weight reduction purposes (approximately 200 lbs lighter) and included aluminum doors. The M3 lightweight came with several performance upgrades based on the European M3 GT homologation series for worldwide GT racing. The U.S. models were homologated for the IMSA/Firehawk series and because of strict D.O.T. laws; they had to be sold with all the “go-fast” parts in the trunk. Also, it has been rumored that the motors for these cars were handpicked off of the assembly line and the highest output and lightest motors were set aside for the CSL/LTW program. Unfortunately, many of these cars went to pro race teams or club racers and very few unmolested examples remain. Estimates of remaining stock LTWs are around 2-dozen. Differences from a stock M3: Rear axle ratio of 3:23 Aluminum doors GT front spoiler with adjustable wind splitter and aero underbody panel Solid upper strut bar brace Underside X-brace Special sports suspension settings Trunk lid spoiler with integrated third brake light BMW sports seats, cloth only Special interior materials and colors Forged magnesium alloy wheels Reduced sound and noise insulation Alpine white with diagonal Motorsports flags Carbon fiber trim BMW Motorsport International logo integrated into doorsills and glove box No radio No center console valet Trunk lid tool kit deleted No air-conditioning No sunroof As was the case with all M3 CSL/LTWs, this example was initially delivered to BMWNA’s racing arm PTG (Performance Technology Group) headed up by Tom Milner. PTG prepared the LTW kit for the trunk and performed any customization the dealer requested before being delivered. It was then delivered to Chris Motors BMW of Decatur, Georgia in November of 1995. It was on display in their showroom until being purchased on January 24th, 1997 by a local enthusiast/collector. This first owner kept the car for a little over 3-years before selling it to the current owner on June 2nd, 2000 with 20k miles on the car. This owner lives in San Diego, California. He is a long time BMW marque enthusiast who (even back then) knew how important these LTWs were historically. He did all the right things to preserve this example. It was never tracked or abused and frequently serviced. Although he only drove the car for less than 10k miles over the next 15-years, he had some of the best in the business service it. He employed the well-known shop of La Jolla Independent (owned and operated by Carl Nelson) to perform any maintenance. Besides the annual oil changes (at a minimum), less than 200-miles ago he had the complete cooling system restored. This included: All new drive belts New water pump Bleed and pressure test system New factory radiator including expansion tank Replaced thermostat Differential flush New brake pads and rotors all the way around In total, these services were over $3,000. Furthermore, although this example is very original, time had started to take its toll on some of the cosmetic finishes. So, we had one of the best concours preparation businesses in Southern California (Doctor Detail of Costa Mesa, CA) invest nearly $3,000 on preparing the car to a very high level. Highlights of the work performed includes: Correct restoration of the rare magnesium alloy wheels Careful paintless dent removal of any/all dents Restoration of the rear factory LTW wing base (very fragile and prone to cracking) Removal and replacement of the motorsport flag vinyl graphics using an original spare set from PTG Careful preservation of rare carbon fiber center console pieces The final result is stunning. The goal was to preserve the originality of the car while giving it a fresh look. All the paint is still original and verified with a paint meter. The car was carefully buffed and polished. The chassis, engine, and wheel wells were completely detailed to a near new finish. This M3 LTW is everything you would expect from a low-mile well cared-for example. It is ready for any level of show competition or simply for driving (they are one of the best driving M3s ever built and quite addicting). As you can imagine, the exterior is immaculate and very original. All the panels are original with their correct corresponding VIN decal. The paint has been verified original with a paint meter (see pics). There are a few spots on the front where the clear coat is wearing thin, but it isn’t very noticeable unless you are very close and looking for it. There are a couple spots on the hood and the right front fender (see pics). It’s preferable to maintain the originality of the paint in my opinion. The wheels were recently restored and are wearing tires with near full tread. The brakes are brand new. The front factory retractable splitter is showing some minor wear on the edges. The interior is equally nice and quite fresh. The rare hurricane cloth upholstery looks near new with minimal signs of use. The door panels, headliner, and dash all look fresh. The factory radio was dealer installed when new (common practice). However, the original factory radio-delete plate is included with the car (see pic). Everything seems to function properly except for the pixels on the center console data computer (outside temp, mpg avg, etc.) are burning out. Replacements are available for under $75 but the owner chose not to replace it as it has never been removed from the center console. This example is completely stock except for the Turner Motorsports ECU chip. The original factory chip is included with the car and takes minutes to swap back. Everything that came with the factory ltw is complete with this example including the rear wing with risers, dual pickup oil system (new and never installed but included…see pic), retractable splitter, x-brace, and strut brace. We also have all the original PTG delivery documentation and BMW factory vehicle history report (see pics). Of course, the best part of this rare M3 is the way it drives. It is an absolute delight. You can’t help but get a big grin when behind the wheel. The power/torque curve is surprisingly strong and easily gets up to speed. The steering is incredibly light. And, the gearbox shifts with the lightest of motions. The pedal positions are spot on as well. This BMW was built to race. California registration is paid through June of 2016. Those of us of a certain age remember the 205 GTI 1.9 as being THE hot hatch to have in the late 80s and early 90s. The 205 GTI gets all the plaudits now (and values of pristine cars have rocketed of late), but back then it was the 309 GTI that had the motoring magazines enthusing about it's combination of gutsy performance and pin-sharp handling. Autocar and Motor magazine named it "Best Hot Hatch" 3 years in a row, and in 1991 a 309 GTI won the Esso Superlube Saloon Car Championship, beating BMW E30 M3s and Ford Sierra Cosworths on the way to the title. The 309 GTI was produced in a limited numbers of just 5300 cars produced by early 1992, and featured Italian Red paint, Speedline alloy wheels with polished rims, full black with red accents interior, GTI badges, a leather-rimmed MOMO steering wheel . It had just 1 owner and 58K kilometers, and in near perfect order. and preserved in time-warp condition. According to 309 registry, there are just over 2000 309 GTI currently on the road,. Compared with the 6,000 or so 205 GTIs still around , the 309 GTI is a very rare model, and so to find one that has been preserved in standard, unmodified condition is very special indeed. Here is our assessment of the condition of the car: Exterior bodywork and paint The Ilaian RED paint is in fantastic condition, with a deep shine and virtually no blemishes. There are no dents on the body panels. The bumpers and side rubbing strips are all in excellent condition, as are the spotlights and foglights to the front spoiler. There are a couple of very minor mark to the rear quarter, only visible upon very close inspection. The GTI badges are all perfect. Chassis and structure The underside of the car is very clean, with the factory applied underseal and paint in excellent condition. The wheelarches are also very clean and all original. I can find no corrosion on the bodyshell at all, or any evidence of any previous repairs. Engine and gearbox Like travelling back 20 years! The torque-rich 1.9 XU9 engine burbles away at idle, has a lovely crisp throttle response and delivers punchy acceleration through the close ratio 5-speed gearbox. The clutch and gearbox change action both feel fresh and much more like a 2 year old car than a 26 year old one! All fluids are clean and to the correct levels, the car having been fully serviced in January 2015, including a brake fluid change. Unlike any other Goodwood I have seen in the past few years, it does NOT feature an aftermarket exhaust or an induction kit - just the standard items specified by Peugeot. Steering, ride, handling & brakes Absolutely superb throughout. The steering is direct, communicative and full of feel, the ride is supple, combining soft spring rates with taut damping, so at everyday pace the Goodwood feels civilized and comfortable. Turn up the wick a bit and the whole car comes alive, with fabulous neutral handling, no understeer to speak of, and wonderful balance through the bends. The brakes are perfectly matched to the weight of the car, delivering stability and confidence to the driver. All in all, it's a lovely thing to drive along an A or B road, and it doesn't need to be driven at warp factor 10 to deliver a fantastic driving experience! Interior, dash and controls The seats are in excellent supple condition, showing no visible wear, just a few subtle creases to mark the passage of time. The dashboard is very clean and surprisingly creak/rattle free for a 90's Peugeot. There is a blanking plate for the fuses I have had to replace the glovebox lid, as these are notorious for snapping their catches. The correct replacement lid fits perfectly. The original-fit Clarion PU-9318A radio/cassette unit is unfortunately no longer with the car, a more modern CD unit is fitted instead. All the gauges, controls and electrics work as they should. The doorcards and carpets are in perfect condition. The vacuum sealed glass sunroof works correctly, and the headlining is unmarked. As far as I can tell, the car has never been smoked in. Wheels and tyres The GTI only Speedline alloy wheels are in excellent condition, with no kerbing to the polished rims and no marks to the painted face of the wheels. The tyres are Bridgestones all around. The spare wheel is also in great condition, with a new budget tyre fitted History and paperwork The car comes with it's original Peugeot book pack, including Owner's Handbook, Maintenance Record and Dealer Location Guide. The Maintenance Record shows service stamps, the first 8 from the supplying Peugeot main dealer. Summary A very rare car indeed, and one which is as exhilarating to drive now as it was when new. Remaining in pristine condition throughout, this classic "hot hatch" has benefited from the care and attention of a long term owner from new, which has helped it avoid ever being "just an old Peugeot". It has moved seamlessly from cherished new car to cherished modern classic, and may well be unique in that respect as so few Goodwoods were ever produced.
