For Sale: 1971 Buick Skylark Convertible. Original West Coast car!Sold new in Portland at Wallace Buick, 1971. Car has been in the Portland area for all its life, with the exception of spending a couple years in California with the original owners, and then returning to Portland. Factory options: Car is White, w/ Black Top & interior. Power Steering, Power brakes, Power Top, original 350 V8, Turbo-hydro 350 automatic transmission, AM radio, All-factory Tinted glass, Buick chrome Rally wheels, Driver side remote mirror w/ optional Passenger side fixed matching mirror. Glass rear window in convertible top. The factory convertible power top works beautifully. We purchased this great car in 1989. We believe we are the third owners of the car. The car has ALWAYS been garaged at home, or at indoor storage. We have the original factory Protec-0-Plate & Owner’s Manual. Over the years, we have maintained the car as needed. In addition to oil changes & regular maintenance, work that we have done over the years on the car includes: New MOOG suspension. New factory Brake Proportioning valve. New heater core. Rebuilt the radiator. Complete new dual exhaust system. New replacement tinted & shaded windshield. New brakes w/new rear drums. Carburetor rebuilt. New trunk emblem. New set Goodrich radial tires in August 2012.4 new NOS Buick center caps for Rally wheels. Overall: this car is NOT restored; this car is mostly original, except for one re-paint, a new top, and general mechanical repair / replacement items as needed. (Major items listed above) All Receipts during our ownership, and a car cover, come with the car. This Buick Skylark convertible has been a part of our family for many years. We enjoyed many miles and smiles with the car. Over the years,it has won awards at many car shows/cruise-ins, etc. In 2003 the Skylark won a Second Place at Forest Grove Concours. It is no longer used as a show car, just a fun convertible for cruising! The car has aged well, and runs great. But every old car has some issues: Most recently, a family member backing out of the garage, rubbed the passenger front fender against the garage door opening. So the car has a new, small dent in that fender. The passenger side inner fender, has a rusted area under the battery tray. Reproduction parts are now available to repair this area. The car presents well, looks pretty, but is not "mint". It has some of the typical chips, scratches, door dings, paint flaws etc., expected with a 45 year-old used car that is driven. There is some chrome fade on on area on the rear bumper. Some weatherstrip parts need replacing. The interior is all original, (even the carpet) and has never been restored. It still looks nice, but there is some wear that needs attention, mainly there are two splits in the front seat. So a brand-new correct front seat reproduction upholstery kit from "Legendary" comes with the car.A brand-new "woodgrain" kit for the dash comes with the car. Over the years, there had been a water leak in the trunk. The original owners fixed this with fiberglass repairs to the trunk floor. It doesn't look great, but back then, there were no reproduction parts made to fix the trunk floor. Reproduction trunk floor parts are now available. Current original mileage is approx. 144,230 As far as we know, the engine has not been rebuilt. Unfortunately, the car has recently spent several years in storage. It has developed typical oil and coolant leaks from long storage. A new rear main engine seal would cure the oil leak, and a new freeze plug will cure the coolant leak. The car starts and runs good, but could benefit from new tune-up, gaskets, seals, etc. The 1970-71-72 Buick Skylarks are considered one of Buick’s best styling designs. These cars are fun to drive, and look beautiful. We are downsizing, and don’t use the car very often anymore. The car spends way too much time in storage. It is hard to let the car go, and we hope another family will enjoy the car as much as we have. Realistically offered at $13,500.00 All Offers considered. Car is sold: “As is, Where is” with No warranty, No guarantee, expressed or implied.Buyer responsible for any pick-up, transportation, and insurance on the car at time of purchase. We have the clear title in the state of Oregon. Title will not be released until buyer's funds are paid in full, and have cleared at our credit union.NOTE: I am not a dealer. I am not a mechanic. I have represented the car as accurately as possible. We have owned this car for going on 27 years. It has always been a great car! You are welcome to inspect this car. There is no warranty on used vintage vehicles. Thanks for your interest in this great Buick convertible! All offers will be considered.I have an original factory AM / FM radio for the Skylark. Depending on the price paid for the car, I may include the AM/FM radio, that will be determined by the offers on the car. Please email with any questions.

Vehicle Review Vehicle Information ?Overview ?Introduction ?Walkaround ?Driving Impression ?Interior ?Summary Superb luxury sedan with heritage and sporting legacy. The XJ is Jaguar's top of the line model, known for pampering occupants with luxury amenities, a silky smooth ride and effortless power. The XJ is built on a light and strong all-aluminum structure. Three regular wheelbase trims are available; XJ, XJ Supercharged, and XJ Supersport. Three long wheelbase trims are also available; XJL Portfolio, XJL Supercharged, and XJL Supersport. Three variations of 5.0-liter V8 are available; a 385-hp naturally aspirated, a 470-hp supercharged, or a 510-hp supercharged. A six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters sends power to the rear wheels. An adjustable air suspension is responsible for the XJ's impressive road handling abilities and luxurious ride. Safety features include dual front airbags, side curtain airbags, and front side-impact airbags. Anti-lock brakes, traction control, and electronic stability control are standard. For 2012, the XJ Supersport gains a standard rear seat entertainment system and the XJL Supersport receives added rear seat enhancements. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Jaguar XJ enhances Jaguar's legacy of sporting, stylish cars. The Jaguar XJ uses a smooth and satisfying 32-valve 5.0-liter V8 making 385 horsepower (470 hp in the Supercharged model), and a silky 6-speed automatic transmission. The XJ is designed to be a performance luxury sedan that succeeds in European markets. It aims to coddle and appease the luxury buyer and provide thrilling performance for the enthusiast driver. Completely redesigned for 2011, the Jaguar XJ carries into 2012 unchanged save for some option packaging and some new interior color combinations. Over decades, Jaguar has developed a reputation for building low-slung sedans with an impeccable blend of handling and comfort. This latest XJ suggests they are back on track after years of XJs that were not so exciting. The XJ was awarded 'Best Luxury Sedan' by Winding Road online magazine, in both 2011 and 2012. The sleek XJ abandons the delicate roof pillars of the past, with a single flowing line from windshield to tail lamps. Longer than a BMW 7 Series or Mercedes S-Class, the Jaguar XJ won't be mistaken for anything else. In the enveloping cabin, leather and wood are mixed in Italian shapes and English materials. Seat contour and bolstering seems appropriate to the car's mission; it's not too tight or sporty, and the driver's adjustable bolstering comes in handy on curvy roads. The standard full-length panoramic glass roof floods the cabin with natural light and offers a sense of spaciousness, as well as allowing a sleek coupe-like profile and lithe stance for which Jaguar cars are known. The Jaguar XJL is a long-wheelbase model that adds nearly 5 inches to the overall length, with longer rear doors and glass. This increases rear legroom by 5 inches, making an expansive 44.1 inches of rear legroom total. The best ride quality comes with the Jaguar XJL with 19-inch wheels. Cars this long aren't meant to be canyon carvers or autocross warriors, but the Jaguar XJL also handles extremely well when driven hard in the corners. Under the XJ body is a rigid and lightweight aluminum structure that contributes to this handling precision, and also to economy, acceleration, and ride comfort. Jaguar is the leader in sophisticated all-aluminum construction. The 5.0-liter V8 engine, designed and produced at Jaguar facilities in Coventry, England, is all aluminum. It features 32 valves, direct injection, independent variable cam timing, cam profile switching, and a variable geometry inlet manifold. The 385-horsepower engine has more than enough power for any luxury sedan occasion, although you can go faster. The Jaguar XJ Supercharged model adds 85 horsepower and 40 foot-pounds of torque, cutting one second off the 0-60 mph time, to less than 5 seconds. You have to boot the gas pedal to feel the difference, but when you do, it blows your shoes off. The special-order Jaguar XJ Supersport adds another 40 horsepower and 40 more foot-pounds of torque. That one will blow your shoes and your socks off. The sixth-generation twin vortex Roots-type supercharger lacks the whine of old; it can't be heard because of the air intake that was designed to isolate and lose the supercharger whine. The XJ is long-legged, meant to get up there at high speeds and stretch. It's so smooth and commanding that 90 mph feels like 70. In fact, it wants to run 90, not poke along at 70, so be careful. The sweet 6-speed manual-automatic transmission uses adaptive gear-change strategies based on the type of road and the driver's application of the gas pedal. In manual mode, the transmission stays in the driver's chosen gear to redline, and the paddle shifts are sharp. The XJ uses fully independent suspension, with steel springs in front for precision and air springs in back for the best level ride among varying loads. Ride quality and bump absorption is very good, even on 20-inch wheels over pock-marked roads and expansion joints. But with those 20-inch wheels and wide tires, at 70 mph the XJL tends to follow freeway grooves; at faster speeds, wide-tired Jag goes straight as an arrow. The XJ uses big brake rotors and calipers, and giant ones on the supercharged models, with their top speed of 155 mph (electronically limited). The brakes are supported by the full suite of electronic controls. The stability control can be turned off, but we never found the need while testing the limits because the system is not intrusive at all. The Jaguar XJ competes with the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Lexus LS, Maserati Quattroporte, Aston Martin Rapide, and Porsche Panamera. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The Jaguar XJ expands the work done with the mid-sized XF by bringing a more sporting, sleeker look to Jaguar's flagship that just oozes style. Central to this are lots of glass and no building-size pillars for a roofline that seamlessly blends into the trunk. At more than 200 inches long the XJ is not a small car but it disguises its size well, much like the smallest Learjet more than three times the length of an XJL, and the XJ doesn't look nearly as imposing as a BMW 7 Series or Audi A8. The Lexus LS looks rather plain next to the Jaguar. Surprisingly, the XJ design works as well on the standard wheelbase as it does on the long-wheelbase XJL. A larger rear door and side glass are the only way to differentiate them. Pulling the lower door sheetmetal inward toward the rear wheel enhances the hips covering the rear tires. The only design element that incites any controversy is the black polycarbonate panel between the rear doors and rear window, a pillar normally body-colored on other cars. From dead astern it looks merely a wider rear window, but from any other angle it tends to look better on cars with dark paint or deeply tinted rear windows. Exterior ornamentation is kept to a minimum with the requisite mesh chrome grilles and chrome spats in the outer lower nostrils, a badge behind the front wheel which includes supercharged if it applies, bright window trim, the trunk badge, Jag's leaper in the middle, chrome strip across the rear bumper and dual quadrangle tailpipes. Apart from larger standard wheels and the front fender badge there is no trim distinction between XJ and XJL or standard or supercharged cars. With 152 light emitting diodes outside, the lighting elements take up where chrome leaves off. Front light housings carry two large and two small circular lights, with a strip of LED running lights below. The tail lamps are arranged as three vertical columns to mimic a cat's claws, and cleverly concealed in plain sight at the top of the rear light housing is a clear bump, like an animal's eye, that hides five red LEDs for side marker light duty to meet regulations without spoiling the flowing body lines. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Jaguar XJ's 385-hp V8 is no more powerful than the engines found in other cars in this class but the XJ is lighter by 300 to 400 pounds, thanks to its aluminum chassis and body, and that helps its acceleration and fuel mileage. The engine has more than enough power for any luxury sedan occasion. But you can go faster. The Supercharged model adds 85 horsepower and 40 foot-pounds of torque, cutting one second off the 0-60 mph time, to less than 5 seconds. You have to boot the gas pedal to feel the difference, but when you do, it blows your shoes off. The special-order Supersport adds another 40 horsepower and 40 foot-pounds of torque. That one will blow your socks off. We found all three V8s smooth as a bottler's private label, quiet at cruise or loping around town, while bringing a welcome throaty purr under heavier throttle. The sixth generation twin vortex Roots-type supercharger lacks the whine of old, and can't be heard even with the stereo off and windows windows down. That's because of the air intake that was designed to isolate and lose the supercharger whine. The 5.0-liter engine is designed and produced at Jaguar facilities in Coventry, England. It's an all-aluminum 32-valve V8 featuring direct injection, independent variable cam timing, cam profile switching, and a variable geometry inlet manifold. The multi-hole direct injection system sprays pressurized fuel (up to 150 bar) into the center of the combustion chambers. The variable camshaft timing system has its own Jaguar spin, as well. The inlet camshaft profile switching changes the characteristics of the engine for the torque, power or economy that may be needed at any moment. The XJ is long-legged, meant to get up there at high speeds and stretch. It's so smooth and commanding that 90 mph feels like 70. In fact, it wants to run 90, not poke along at 70, so be careful. The XJ's sweet 6-speed manual-automatic transmission uses adaptive gear-change strategies based on the type of road and the driver's application of the gas pedal. This transmission anticipates well and shifts smoothly. Full air-suspended cars like the Mercedes S-Class have a slight edge in ultimate ride cushiness, but they haven't the steering precision of the Jag, while others have multiple electronic chassis controls to help deal with the weight but impart a sense of artificiality. The XJ doesn't have such artificiality. Steering is light but firms up, as does the suspension damping, with the touch of a button. It may not post the ultimate handling numbers of an Aston Rapide or Maserati Quattroporte or Porsche Panamera, but the handling is balanced, the ride quality competitive, the look clearly better in one case, and the cost at least $20,000 less. We did have one issue, however, which we believe to be caused by the wide 245/40YR20 front and 275/35YR20 rear tires. At 70 mph, over an unsmooth freeway, the car tends to wander with the grooves on the highway. We haven't felt this on XJ models with the standard 19-inch wheels; in fact, we've never felt it on any of the many XJs we've driven in previous years. Big rotors and calipers, even bigger on supercharged cars, are backed up by the full suite of electronic controls. Although you can switch off the stability control, we never found the need while testing the limits because the system is not intrusive at all. A standard-wheelbase XJ Supersport will be the quickest model and, depending on tires fitted, should be the best-handling as well. But the plain XJ managed just fine thank you, so think of the Supersport as the XJ to have if you think you want to drive a racetrack. If you think you want to get to a racetrack comfortably in minimum time, any XJ will do the job. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The Jaguar XJ is a true flagship, filled with fine leather and wood, as much Scandinavian as English it seems. It's stylish, luxurious and sporty, although there are places in the design and materials that make us ask if this is the best Jaguar can do. The XJ comes standard with leather of course, front seats both heated and cooled, with dual-zone climate control. XJL and supercharged models add piped leather upholstery and massage front seats with 20-way adjustment and four-zone climate control. The five upholstery choices include contrasting cabin trim, stitching and piping; Ivory can be paired with four colors. Some XJs have suede headliners. Supersport models get a unique leather color, four unique woods or piano black trim and a leather headliner. A 1.5-inch band of wood (we like the walnut) or carbon fiber moves in a sweeping curve from the doors under the windshield like a gunwale on a small cabin cruiser, the outward bend providing an air of spaciousness. It's like a step, separating levels of horizontal leather on the dashboard. There's a hump and visor like a ballcap over the instruments, which are clear enough, but they aren't real, they're a rendition that look not unlike animation. The optional steering wheel is stylish and original, mostly leather with a thin wood band. There are two fat climate control vents in the center of the dash, and two smaller ones at the edges. They look like the nose of a torpedo sticking out of its tubes, or a WW2 bomber engine without the propeller, and they have plastic chrome rings like a model of Saturn. They'd be perfect in a '58 Buick. There's an analog clock on the dash, with no numbers, just hard-to-read hashmarks, and more cheap chrome plastic. It's neither pretty nor functional. We can only guess that Jaguar thinks it's classy. With all the seat adjustments, any size driver can get comfortable. Seat contour and bolstering seems appropriate to the car's mission, which is to say it's not too tight or sporty, and the driver's seat adjustable bolstering comes in handy on curvy roads. Rear seats are also comfortable and heated. XJL models add more than five inches to rear accommodation, making an expansive 44.1 inches of rear legroom total. The XJL costs $3000 more, so if you carry passengers or have a family it could be worth it, especially since the XJL weighs less than 100 pounds more. Reading lights, glass overhead, and venting add comfort to the rear. The instrument panel is a 12.3-inch screen with renditions of analog gauges on it; it looks like animation, or like a decal of a gauge that you might find on a kids' pedal car. The tachometer needle doesn't seem to move as quickly as the engine revs. On the steering wheel, in addition to the cruise and audio control, there's a scroll surrounded by arrows that yields driver information; it's a piece leftover from when Jaguar was owned by Ford, as Fords have the exact same little dial. We found most of what we wanted to know, although we never figured out how to get the tachometer, odometer, and DTE (distance to empty) on the screen at the same time. Let alone the tachometer, which also kept disappearing if we pressed the wrong arrow at the wrong time. And besides DTE could only be accessed by a button on the turn-signal stalk. Jaguar makes it complicated. The transmission gears are selected with a rotary dial that pops up on the console, except when you manually shift using paddles at the steering wheel. Above the shift dial are the audio and climate controls, and above them is the 8-inch touch-screen that we found to be a bit of a non-intuitive mess. We kept having to refer to the thick manual, and even then it felt like a mess. Naturally iPod other inputs are included, and the hard drive has enough space to rip 10 CDs uncompressed, a good thing as the available Bowers & Wilkins 20-speaker, 1.2-kilowatt sound system will clearly reproduce any fault in your source material. Outward visibility is fairly good given the expanse of glass, and the bright bi-Xenon headlamps, although the passenger C pillar creates an over-the-shoulder blind spot. On the freeway, the standard blind-spot warning will alert you, although we're not major fans because of all the false alarms. We found the parking sensors so loud as to be distracting; perhaps this can be adjusted. Trunk space is average for the class and impeccably finished down to the aluminum runners in the floor. Unlike some competitors with run-flat tires the Jaguar carries a spare under the floor (deleting the spare adds 3 cubic feet). The power trunk lid can be programmed for opening height lest you or your garage overhead is petite. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary The Jaguar XJ does everything you expect in a luxury sedan, with room, amenities, quiet and thrust, with a sporty side always in the background that offers more driver interaction but one that never changes the car's personality. Eye-catching lines and serene cabins that marry contemporary design with both traditional and modern materials convey a sense of style that more antiseptic modern conveyances can only wish for, and that the XJ has the performance to back up. Sam Moses filed this NewCarTestDrive.com report after his test drives of the XJ models near Portland, Oregon. Vehicle Review Vehicle Information ?Overview ?Introduction ?Walkaround ?Driving Impression ?Interior ?Summary Roomy SUV with contemporary technology. The Ford Explorer has long been one of the best-selling SUVs in the market. A capable tow vehicle and off-roader, it also offers the generous interior space, comfort features and safety technologies necessary for day-to-day tasks. The 7-passenger Explorer is available in both front- and four-wheel drive configurations, with a choice of four trim levels: Base, XLT, Limited and Sport. A 290-hp 3.5-liter Ti-VCT V6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission with SelectShift manual mode are standard on all trims. The 4x4 models get a user-friendly terrain management system, while an efficient 237-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engine with direct fuel injection is available for FWD models. Explorer Base trims are well-equipped with 17-inch wheels, air conditioning, cruise control, MP3 capability and MyFord driver connect technology; XLT trims add 18-inch aluminum wheels, fog lamps and a reverse sensing system, along with a USB port, satellite radio and the SYNC communications and entertainment system. Limited trims are further outfitted with 20-inch aluminum wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, leather upholstery, HD radio, Intelligent Access with push-button start and a rearview camera. Standard safety features on every Explorer include AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control and Curve Control function, traction control, anti-lock disc brakes and a tire pressure monitor, as well as Ford's MyKey owner control feature and six airbags. Industry-first second-row inflatable seatbelts are available on XLT and Limited models, packaged with a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with cross-traffic alert; additional options include Active Park Assist and adaptive cruise control with collision warning. The Ford Explorer carries over with minimal changes for 2013. A front passenger knee airbag is now standard on all models, while XLT trims get a six-way power front passenger seat. Additionally, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist are offered on the Limited trim for this model year, and the available high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps now include automatic high beam control. The big news for 2013 is the addition of the high performance Sport trim with a 365-hp twin-turbo V6, sport suspension, 20-inch wheels and unique sport trim inside and out. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Ford Explorer is one the best seven-passenger sport-utility vehicles available. It delivers the function and family friendly features of a minivan with the rugged appeal of an SUV. New for 2013 is an Explorer Sport trim with a twin-turbocharged version of Ford's 3.5-liter V6 engine, a sport-tuned suspension and all-wheel-drive. Using Premium gas, Explorer Sport makes up to 365 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque. New options on 2013 Explorer Limited models include a lane departure warning system, heated steering wheel and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column. All 2013 Explorer models come standard with a front-passenger knee airbag. This latest generation of the Ford Explorer, introduced for 2011, features a one-piece, unibody design rather than a ladder-type truck frame with a separate, bolted on body. The result is more car-like driving dynamics, as well as significant weight savings, which translates to better fuel economy. Powering all 2013 Ford Explorer models except the Sport is 3.5-liter V6 that makes 290 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, four-wheel drive is optional. Although the Explorer does not come with low-range gearing, 4WD versions of the Explorer get Ford's Terrain Management system, which allows the driver to select from four modes for optimal traction in a variety of driving environments. It also includes hill start assist and hill descent control. Fuel economy with the base V6 engine on front-wheel-drive Explorer models is an EPA-estimated 17/24 mpg City/Highway, or 17/23 mpg City/Highway on 4WD models. Even with regular all-season tires, the Explorer will blast through sand or traverse deep ditches and steep hills, no problem. We know. We did it. And it has the smoothest ride we've encountered over such terrain. For maximum fuel economy, front-wheel-drive versions of the 2013 Ford Explorer can be equipped with an optional 2.0-liter, four cylinder EcoBoost engine. It has more power than the standard V6 in the previous-generation Explorer, with 240 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque, and delivers an EPA-estimated 20/28 mpg City/Highway. The 2.0 EcoBoost is sufficiently powerful, and acceptable if mileage is the absolute priority. Still, depending on gas prices and how many miles you drive, it can take time to recover the four-cylinder's $1,000 up-front cost in fuel savings. We prefer the standard 290-horspower V6 with its smooth, strong acceleration. Explorer's chassis is super rigid, which not only makes for great crash-test scores, but also a quiet cabin, excellent ride quality and solid handling that belies the Explorer's considerable size. Inside, there is plenty of legroom in the second row, real space for passengers in the third, and up to 80.7 cubic-feet of cargo space. It can be reconfigured in seconds, with split rear seats that fold with a button on each side and bounce back up with the pull of a lever. The interior is smartly styled and well finished. The materials and build quality are quite good. The base Explorer comes well equipped. The upgraded Limited trim is leather-upholstered, with heated-seats and offered with premium audio, navigation and rear-seat DVD entertainment. The MyFordTouch interface is optional, but can be cumbersome and at least a little annoying. Other SUVs to consider in this class include the Buick Enclave, Chevrolet Traverse, Dodge Durango, GMC Acadia, Honda Pilot or Mazda CX-9. All provide similar or slightly better cargo space, but lack the history and cachet of the Explorer nameplate. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The Ford Explorer is rugged but refined, familiar but fresh. It's a foot longer than the Ford Edge crossover, a few inches shorter than the Dodge Durango SUV and about eight inches shorter than the Chevy Traverse. Yet it's several inches wider than all of them. Beautiful headlights complement the graceful fenders and transform the inherently square nose. The amber indicators sweep back like narrow wings atop tidy main projector beams. The plastic grille is gray on the base Explorer, body-colored on the XLT and satin-chrome on the Limited. The hood looks short from the side, but long when looking straight down it. It's got two parallel humps and a scoop in the center. Rear taillights are LED, and also look good. The window outline is clean, bold and symmetrical, with blackened A-, B-, and D-pillars, and body-colored C-pillars that slant down and back and impart forward motion to the vehicle. With standard dark privacy glass, from the shoulders up, in white at least, the Explorer looks like a sleek yacht. You'll also see design cues from other Ford vehicles. The fender flares are inspired by the Mustang and body sides follow the lines of the Taurus. The three-bar grille strikes resemble those of the Range Rover, which was once-upon-a-time a member of the Ford family. Wheels are 17-inch steel with plastic covers on the base Explorer, 10-spoke 18-inch painted aluminum on the XLT, and 20-inch painted aluminum with spokes like flower petals on the Limited. The optional 20-inch polished aluminum wheels have spokes like shriveling flower petals or crab pincers, and don't do justice to the car. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Ford Explorer has the practicality, function and family-friendly features of good minivans, with a more rugged appeal and real off-road capability. The optional 2.0 EcoBoost engine packs significant wallop for its size. With a peak of 240 horsepower, the 2.0 EcoBoost makes 50 fewer horsepower than Explorer's standard 3.5-liter V6, or 17 percent less. Yet the four-cylinder is nearly 50 percent smaller than the V6 by displacement. It has more torque than the V6, and better EPA mileage ratings. Yet the problem with the 2.0 EcoBoost engine in the Explorer is that a lot of drivers will be keeping it floored a lot of the time. It often seems like it's working really hard, with a lot of sound and fury to minimal effect. If fuel-economy is a very high priority, the 2.0 EcoBoost will get the job done. But we'd guess most owners would be happier with the 290-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6. Ford's dual-overhead cam, all-aluminum V6 is quite efficient in is own right. Mated to a six-speed automatic transmission with optional manual shifting, the V6 is smooth and responsive, with good acceleration and plenty of torque to maintain 80 mph on an uphill freeway, after a smooth and welcome kickdown to fifth gear. We drove nearly 200 miles in a V6 Explorer, mostly at about 60 mph on casual two-lanes with about a dozen freeway miles running uphill to 80 mph, and averaged about 17 mpg. Before we got on the throttle on the freeway, we saw a 20-mpg average. Ford put all the engineering effort it could muster into the Explorer, and got the ride, handling, and NVH (noise, vibration and harshness) results it hoped for. The rigid chassis and careful tuning of the independent suspension produce a superb all-around ride. It takes corners and undulations flat, and the speed-sensitive electric power steering allows it to turn relatively tight and quick. We sampled the AWD Explorer on an off-road course, and we've never tested anything off road that absorbed deep ruts and huge humps so smoothly. We're talking 10 mph here. It was as if the Explorer had a few extra feet of travel in the suspension. The Explorer's optional all-wheel drive system has no transfer case. That saves weight, and minimizes the fuel-mileage penalty that invariably comes with AWD. Instead, the Explorer maximizes off-road traction with a fancy electronic-control system called Terrain Management. There are four modes to the system, which the driver sets with a knob behind the shift lever. In the Normal mode, on dry pavement, the vehicle runs at about 90 percent power to the front wheels, 10 percent to the rear. Torque shifts to the rear as needed, if the front wheels lose traction and can't do as much work. Normal mode is what you'll use most of the time, rain or shine. The Snow/Gravel mode allows less wheelspin, provides conservative throttle control, and enables earlier transmission upshifts. This should help stabilize handling, making the Explorer easier to control in sloppy conditions, though you'll still need to exercise care when slowing down. The Sand mode provides more aggressive throttle, holds the transmission in gear longer, and desensitizes traction control. Because, unlike in snow, to make progress in sand you need wheelspin. Mud/Ruts allows more torque as throttle increases. Stability control is desensitized to help maintain momentum over soft or uneven surfaces. Terrain Management also includes Hill Descent Control, which proved itself on a steep downhill on the off-road course, holding the Explorer's speed to 4 mph without driver input. It's proven itself in many vehicles we've tested, including many Land Rovers. On an icy hill, it could save your life or at least help you avoid crashing and damaging your vehicle. If you think you'll need this feature, it's worth learning how to use it most effectively. Of course, the standard front-drive Explorer and its various traction enhancing systems do an excellent job in their own right, even in a driving snow, if the travel surface is pavement. The Explorer will tow 5000 pounds when equipped with the tow package, and includes trailer sway control, which works with the stability control. There's also a rearview camera with zoom, which will guide you to position the hitch ball directly under the trailer hitch cap, and make you feel like an astronaut docking his spacecraft. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior Fit and finish inside the Explorer is excellent, and we particularly like the Limited's leather seats. The front seats sit up high, which is good because the hood looks long from the driver's seat. The slanted center stack has a clean design and uses stylish satin-finish trim materials. The doors have metal speaker grilles, and curve into the dash panel. There's a big glovebox with a shelf, leather grab handles and armrests on Explorers with leather interior, and long door pockets with space for a bottle. One reason we like the base model is its conventional gauges, relatively simple 4.2-inch LCD screen at the top of the center stack, and familiar mechanical knobs below. The base Explorer doesn't come with the MyFordTouch driver connect technology, and neither does the XLT, unless it's chosen as an option. Cars equipped with MyFordTouch have two driver-configurable LCD screens in front of the driver on either side a big speedometer, and an 8-inch color touch screen at the top of the center stack. The screens come in four quadrants and colors: yellow for phone, red for audio, blue for climate and red for navigation. You have to scroll through a lot of stuff to get information, for example engine temperature, and even after you figure it all out, it can take your focus off the road to perpetually configure. It can all be a bit overwhelming, as many of the features and functions can be adjusted in four separate ways: by voice command, by thumb buttons on the steering-wheel spokes, by touching the display screen itself or by using the buttons in the switch stack below, should you choose to do it the old-fashioned way. We found the voice recognition system to be problematic. During one test, we said, 'Climate,' and it replied, 'Climb in.' We said, 'Seventy-two degrees,' and it replied, 'Eighty-two degrees.' In terms of spaciousness, the Ford Explorer cabin doesn't disappoint. Second-row legroom measures an impressive 40 inches; third-row legroom comes in at 33.2 inches. Because the rear doors swing wide and open easily, and because the second-row seat flips forward in a heartbeat, reaching the rear row is an easy climb, even for adults. Cargo volume measures 21 cubic feet behind the third row (comparable to trunk space in a big sedan, and among the best in Explorer's class), 43.8 cubic feet behind the second row (comparable to a compact SUV or crossover with the rear seats folded), and 80.7 behind the front seats. The cargo space is substantially less than what's available in GM's longer trio of crossovers (Chevrolet Traverse, GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave), but competitive with the rest of Explorer's competition. There's a little bit more maximum cargo volume in a Dodge Durango or a Honda Pilot. Still, it's very easy to change configurations in the Explorer. The second seat folds like magic at the touch of a button on each side, bouncing back up with the pull of a lever. Cubby storage adds convenience. A lidded bin in front of the shift lever is designed to hold two cellphones, and cup holders are provided to the right of the shifter. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary The Ford Explorer is large, good-looking and relatively fuel efficient crossover SUV with a long heritage that comes nicely equipped at any trim level. Sam Moses filed this report to NewCarTestDrive.com after his test drive of the Ford Explorer near Portland, Oregon, with Laura Burstein reporting from Los Angeles. FORD 'Ralph Ehorn' KUSTOM PICKUP - 2-Time 'Rod & Custom' Cover Show Truck!Year1954MakeFordModelF-100VINF10D4R10609Stock NumberA248Mileage0TransmissionAutomaticEngine8 CylinderExterior ColorOtherInterior ColorWhiteTitleClearFirst off, let me say that this truck is a very special & historically significant classic pickup, period. Nothing excites me more than acquiring a classic car or truck that has a rich history, a story from decades past when Kustom cars & trucks ruled the streets. Opportunities like this rarely arise, and when they do, they disappear as quickly as they appeared. Well just imagine how excited we @ Red Hills Rods and Choppers were to find the original 1954 Ford F100 Ralph Ehorn Kustom Pickup, which appeared on the cover of 'Rod & Custom’ magazine not once, but twice (January 1959 & January 1960)! Mr. Ehorn of Red Bluff Ca., created this one of a kind Kustom truck in the late 50’s, with much of the work being done by Ray’s Custom Shop in Chico, California. The body was smoothed & shaved of its trim handles, the hood was louvered, nosed & peaked and the tailgate was paneled smooth. They lowered the truck by using a dropped axle up front and relocating the spring mounts in the rear. A 1955 Bel Air grille was used with ’54 Buick headlight bezels, along with ’50 Buick taillights, which were molded into the rear fenders (frenched), and a recessed antenna (frenched) was mounted on the rear of the cab on the passenger side. Chrome bumpers, chrome running boards and chrome side exhaust matched the chrome reverse rims w/ ’40 Ford hubcaps, wrapped in wide whitewall tires. It was finished in Candy Apple Red and was dubbed ‘The Candy Truck’. Ralph showed his truck all over the West Coast and won many trophies along the way. In 1958, it won 3rd in Class @ The Oakland Roadster Show and in January, 1959, it made its first appearance on the cover of 'Rod & Custom’ magazine, with pin-up Roberta Calame gracing the pages alongside the truck. Later that year, Ralph restyled the truck, this time installing a ’59 Buick Grille Insert and using Quad Headlights from a tilt-cab fire truck. She was painted Pearl White and was again featured on the cover of 'Rod & Custom’ magazine in January, 1960, exactly a year from the date of its first appearance. A pretty amazing story if you ask me! Ralph continued to travel the West Coast that year, earning trophies at every event he entered. In late 1960, Ralph ended up trading his award-winning Kustom Pickup w/ Bob Tindle for a Thunderbird. Mr. Tindle was quite the Hot Rodder at the time and is remembered mainly for his famous show/drag car, ‘The Orange Crate’, as well as the ‘Stompin Savoy’, which was known as one of the fastest Super Stockers of that era. He also had a successful dealership in the Portland, Oregon area and he & his cronies were known as the ‘Tindle Gang’ when they attended the Oakland & Portland Roadster Shows. After that, the truck bounced around between several owners over the course of 30+ years until it eventually fell off the radar completely. After years of research, Steve Lemke of Washington State, found the truck after it had been sitting for many years, and was in desperate need of a restoration. Rather than restoring the truck himself, Steve sold the truck to Pete & Joanne Rosenberg in 2002, who immediately set out to make contact w/ Ralph Ehorn, whom they found rather easily as he is still in Red Bluff, California. Ralph was very excited to find out that his truck was still intact, and sent Pete & Joanna copies of old photographs and magazine articles from back in the day. After that, the Rosenbergs decided they just had to restore this legendary Kustom Pickup. The complete restoration was done to very high standards, cutting no corners along the way. The body is laser straight all of the way around, with excellent fit & finish throughout, and NO rust issues whatsoever. The PPG ‘Pastel Green’ paint is absolutely beautiful, and has to be seen in person to truly appreciate how gorgeous it really is. Of course, the '59 Buick Grille, Quad Headlights and '50 Buick Taillights are all still present in show quality condition, and the chrome bumpers are brand new. All weatherstripping & window seals are new, including the wing windows. The truck bed features beautiful Oak Wood paneling w/ stainless trim. A white vinyl Tonneau Cover was custom made for the truck, which fits tight & snug like a glove. Pop open the door and slide into the beautiful white tuck & roll bench seat interior w/ the dash & upper door frames painted body color, which looks exceptional. The original & fully functional gauge cluster is still present, as well as a full set of Auto Meter Gauges, which were added to monitor all vital signs. Directly in front of you is the Chrome Tilt-Steering Column w/ a beautiful Impala Steering Wheel painted in the two-tone body color. Open the glove box and you will find the Kenwood AM/FM/CD/iPod Compatible Receiver neatly mounted inside for easy access. There are (4) switches on the dash, (3) for the neon bulbs & strobes mounted under the truck and (1) for the power antenna, which all work beautifully. The interior of this truck is absolutely beautiful, extremely comfortable and very functional. Pull open the tilt-hood and you will find the all FOMOCO drivetrain! Powered by a 351W motor w/ an Edelbrock Performer Aluminum Intake Manifold, Holley 600 cfm Carburetor, Electronic Ignition, Cast-Iron Exhaust Manifolds, Chrome Valve Covers, Chrome Alternator and Taylor 8mm Plug Wires. The 351W motor is linked to a C4 Automatic Transmission which feeds power to the Ford 9” Rear Axle w/ 3.25 gears. She starts, runs and performs beautifully and is an absolute blast to drive! The 351W motor has plenty of power & torque and the C4 Automatic Transmission shifts smooth and crisp like a new truck. This Pickup does really well on the freeway, and the Power Steering & Power Front Disc Brakes make driving around town effortless. A Chrysler Volare front clip was installed during the restoration, which really made a difference in regards to handling & driveability. She still sits on Chrome Reverse Rims, like she did over 50 years ago, with new B.F. Goodrich Wide Whitewall Tires (P215/60R15 on the rear & P205/60R15 up front). After the restoration was completed, Pete & Joanne started showing their truck, winning lots of awards along the way, including ‘Best Of Show’ at the 2009 Billetproof event. She now sits on our showroom floor here in St. George, Utah, and is ready to hit the highway or start winning trophies all over again. This gorgeous 1954 Ford F100 Kustom Pickup has everything you would ever want in a classic truck, with its incredible history, no expense spared restoration and functionality that will let you get in and drive anywhere at anytime without a worry in the world. Based in Saint George, Utah, R.H.R.C. was founded by Steven Ray Anastos after he relocated to Utah from Southern California. Steven has been dealing in high-end Mopar Muscle Cars since 2003 where he did business in California under the name "Steve’s Killer Bees". Having ridden motorcycles his whole life, he decided to expand the business by dealing in Custom Choppers, Harley-Davidson and Indian Motorcycles in addition to his growing Muscle Car and Hot Rod business. The stunning landscape, beautiful weather, open roads and no helmet laws make Utah the perfect place for such a business. After finding the ideal location with tons of visibility, Steven opened a brand new showroom in Saint George and plans on being around a very long time. The showroom is very unique as there is nothing else like it in Southern Utah. The area is starving for a taste of the Hot Rod Kulture and R.H.R.C. plans on getting in on the ground floor. They sell Helmets, Goggles, Sunglasses, Hats, Beanies, Jewelry, DVD’s, Books and Hot Rod Collectibles such as Rat Fink, Von Dutch, Clay Smith and Mooneyes. They also market their own line of R.H.R.C. apparel. Much of their business has been and will continue to be internet-based, especially the sale of their high-end Muscle Cars and Hot Rods as many of them are in the six-figure category. They intend to start selling these rare vehicles locally as there seems to be quite a following for Muscle Cars, Hot Rods and Motorcycles in the Southern Utah area. R.H.R.C. holds Car Shows and Special Events monthly at their Saint George location so stop by and see their incredible selection of inventory. If you are not already on their mailing list, please call or email with your contact information and they will keep you informed of any and all events. This auction is a legally binding contract to buy this vehicle.
