This 1969 Buick California GS was born on Sept. 9, 1968 in Fremont CA. It was then sent up to San Francisco to Waters Buick were it found itself it's first owner. The car stayed in the hands of that owner until the 90's were it was found in a back yard, having been left to the elements by the original owner. The second owner saw the potential of what the car was and proceeded to restore it close to original as he could afford. The car had no rust but it did have a couple of dents, the worst was the passenger quarter right behind the door and they were addressed without having to replace any panels. The original engine and transmission were rebuilt and the rest of the car brought up to driver quality. The current owner lives in Australia, he has had me working on it for the last year and he wanted the car to be restored to a higher level but has switched his interests. This is an early car with all the documentation, cars like this don't come up often so take the opportunity to own this special car.The engine is the original 350, it was rebuilt around 1997 and has about 30K miles since gone through. It was pulled out, new timing chain, oil pump and water pump installed and all new gaskets. It is currently running synthetic oil. The engine was detailed with all the correct paint and decals. The carburetor was rebuilt, new fuel pump and new foam installed on the ram air openings. It has new points/cap/rotor/wires, the distributor was cleaned, new advance unit installed and counterweights lubed. The radiator was replaced and a recovery tank was added, the original radiator is included with the car. The transmission had the fluid and filter changed, it was also resealed while the engine was out. The differential had new axle seals and pinion seal. All of the belts/hoses are new and the heater core was replaced. The brakes are all brand new, all hardware, shoes, drums, hoses, master cylinder and front wheel bearings (Timken) have been replaced. The exhaust system is a brand new dual setup with mild sounding turbo mufflers, basically the way it could've sounded new (dual exhaust wasn't an option). The gas tank was taken out to put in a new sender, it was cleaned and refinished along with replacing all fuel and vent hoses and it has a new cap. The front suspension is all brand new with Moog parts, all the ball joints, tie rod ends, idler arm, pitman arm and bushings. It has a brand new set of Cooper Cobra tires in a 205/70R 14 which is equivalent to the original optional tire size and the rally wheels were cleaned and refinished. It has a new set of KYB Excel-G shocks all around, nice riding for these older muscle cars. I installed a set of 2" coil spring spacers in the rear to give it a little bit of a raked look but they can be removed and it sits perfectly level if you prefer. The interior looks good, it was done to be a driver so it doesn't have original style upholstery on the seats. The carpet and dash pad were replaced when it was restored originally. The rear package tray was replaced because it had holes cut for an aftermarket stereo so it was returned to original with insulation pad. The headliner has a couple of bad spots and a new one is included, I just didn't have time to install it for him. The door panels are in good shape and all the windows work as they should. The doors had the glass run seals replaced. The exterior of the car has all the original sheet metal, there was a couple of dents worked out and the bigger one was right behind the passenger door but it was able to be straightened. It took me a while but was able to find the wheel opening molding the previous owner was never able to find. There is and was no rust except for some surface rust on the floor in the trunk that cleaned up well. There were no holes and it was cleaned, treated with POR 15 and sprayed with the correct trunk finish. The original jack and tools were restored and it retained the original jack sleeve as well. I found an original rim and installed a good used tire for the spare. I replaced the trunk seal and got a jack instruction decal for the lid. The paint is about 15 years old now, it was painted a later GM color close to the original because he thought the original was too dull. There are a few chips in the paint but it's definitely looks good. it was an above average job but not high end. The bumpers were redone at the time of paint and shine well but there are a couple of blemishes from polishing over the years. The stainless trim is good all around and it does have typical spots in the pot metal. The headlight buckets were repainted on the inside areas, all the headlight adjusters were replaced, Halogen bulbs added for the outers and headlights aimed. The grill chrome is a little worn so it could be redone and the drip rail molding was not straightened very well when the did the top but it's not to hard to do that. The glass is all original, the rear glass was resealed when the did the top, the windshield has a few tiny pits in it and a mark from a wiper blade but it could be polished out. The rest of the glass is good. The car is really clean underneath and chassis is immaculate, I started to repaint the frame starting up front when that work was done so it wouldn't take much to finish it. The original exhaust was still on the car when the new exhaust was done, that alone will tell you how clean the car is underneath. All the lights work, the horn, heater fan, wipers and even the key buzzer but the radio doesn't.It is a pretty nice car but like most it has little things you could do to make it nicer, most of us are never done but rather just finished for now. If you want an excellent driver, I think this foots the bill. I've tried to describe it as accurately as possible and I get a little wordy but want to cover everything. I have a ton of pictures of all different steps of the work done I will include with the car as well as some pics the previous owner had in the file showing the original engine being pulled for rebuild.There is a Buy-It-Now as you can see, you can make an offer if you want but there is more money tied up in it than the buy it now so don't be looking for a steal and Ram Air Buicks have started to climb in the last year or two. There would be interest in a partial trade (min. $10K cash + your car) but it would have to be a car in CA or AZ, I don't like rust. In particular, the 1971 model did not have to adhere to the 1972 and later smog restrictions, making them even more desirable among enthusiasts. Many experts have agreed that these are one of the last true vintage British open cars to reach North America. Haggerty (as well as other collectors) have shown the values of these cars increasing at an exponential rate. The challenge is still finding a good solid and dry original car. We believe this car to either have been sold new in California or lived most of its life here and based on the condition, original 65,000 miles as well. The chassis is dry and original. We have records and registrations dating back over 20-years. Most of its life was spent in Fresno, California. This is probably one of the best places for a vintage British open car to live. It is incredibly dry there. The Fresno owner had the car for over 15-years. When he acquired the car, it hadn’t been running but was complete and dry. So, he did a mechanical restoration. After that, the car was only used lightly and eventually put in storage. The current owner is a Southern California vintage car enthusiast. He bought the car about a year ago from a local mechanic who had found the car stored for over 5-years in the desert. The car still ran great and was still dry and straight. However, most of the interior and rubber had rotted away. So, he began to clean up the car to make it a nice pure driver. The following repairs were performed: Rear bumper re-chromed Replaced all the trunk carpet and tire cover 5-original factory TR6 wire wheels with original hubs (original 4 steel wheels available) Refinished/reworked the wire wheels to fit on the car New Coker original tubed correct redline tires Rewired the rear trunk area Replaced all the rubber seals Rebuilt the master cylinder and reserve on the clutch New clutch plumbing Replaced air cleaner (original air cleaner included) New points, rotor, distributor cap, and coil Full tune-up/service Installed new pace setter Anza exhaust system (the original was still in place but in poor condition) New headlamps, new buckets and new chrome rims He also completely gutted and restored the interior: New dash pad KOA wood dash Recovered original seats with covers from Moss motors New carpets Cleaned up electrical system behind dash New windshield and seal In total, besides his purchase price, this owner invested another $12,000 over the past 12-months on this sympathetic restoration. His goal was to keep this survivor TR6 as pure to original as possible. He was careful about not drilling new/unnecessary holes and using correct original parts whenever possible. He really wanted to experience this car they way it was originally intended. Kudos goes out to his efforts. The end result is fantastic. The car has a wonderful feel to it. It is easy and light to drive with crisp throttle response and effortless shifting. The engine was inspected and a compression/leakdown test was performed when this owner purchased the car. Although the owner cannot find the results, the readings were spot on. The motor is very strong with great power. It doesn’t burn any oil between services. The exterior looks fantastic and unrestored. Some of the paint is still the original paint. Other parts of the paint were repainted over 25+ years ago. The car has a great original patina-look to it. There is some mild checking but nothing significant and it certainly adds to the credibility of the car’s life. The car looks just right on the factory original grey wire wheels with knockoffs. The Coker redline tires really finish out the appearance of the car. They have less than 500-miles on them. The interior looks fantastic. It is fresh, tidy, and brand new. The original seats look great with their new covers. The Koa wood dash is stunning and obviously created by a true craftsman. It is a solid piece of ½” thick wood. The soft top is original. The frame is in great condition, but the original vinyl top is tired and needs to be replaced (only about $500 from Moss). When the owner purchased the car, many original parts were still on the car including the original exhaust and even the original tires. Based on the condition of these components and the vehicle itself, we believe the 65k miles to be original. I was told it was repainted and chrome restored while he owned it and was featured on pages 184-189 in the book "Packard the Pride", as well as on the cover of several magazines. I was also told it was judged at a national Packard event 1989 and scored 96 points where it took first place in class. As far as the Body, it was repainted with a lacquer paint, not the same as original but it was you could still get lacquer paint. The chrome is in excellent condition, the pot metal parts have a couple of very minor blemishes and the stainless trim is very good. The panel alignment is great, the doors will all close themselves as designed. The glass is all good with the exception of 2 vent windows showing some delaminating starting. There are a few chips from being driven and the very bottom of the drivers rear door has a couple of blisters, they've been there since he bought it in 2001. It has several rare factory options such as the fog lights, back up lamp, window rain guards and exhaust deflector. It has the beautiful Firestone reproduction tires, ruby center hubcaps and matching front plate to finish off the elegant appearance. Mechanically it has been serviced regularly and everything functions as designed except for the clock. The clutch was replaced Dec. 2012 with new seals in the transmission at the time. The master cylinder was replaced when it was discovered being the wrong one when the clutch was replaced. The speedometer wasn't working because of a bad cable so it was replaced and the head was rebuilt at the same time. The car showed 42K miles when it stopped working so it was rolled ahead to 47K when rebuilt by figuring his average use multiplied by the number of years it wasn't working so it should be real close. The valves were ground several years ago and new head gasket installed. The Electromatic clutch was serviced this year for a bad governor and adjusted. The temperature gauge was rebuilt this year also and the intake/exhaust gaskets were replaced including new studs in the block. The car drives excellent, the clutch will operate itself for shifting, the overdrive engages smoothly and drops out perfectly for passing and it idles so quiet you almost can't hear it running standing next to it. The exterior of the car is very nice, it has an older paint job that was laid over a perfectly straight body, it shines well and only has a few small spots that have started to check a little. The chrome and stainless trim show very well, there are some small pits on the handles and other cast parts as expected on a car that is driven. The panel alignment is as it should be and I couldn't see any indications of rust issues or any prior collision damage. The glass is beautiful, no scratches and only a few tiny pits in the windshield. There are several factory accessories, factory fog lights, reverse light, wind deflectors and the exhaust deflector that are very seldom seen on this model. In fact I was told this car is the only one known to have these fog lights and the widow shades. The tires are just a few years old and look almost new, the car is garaged of course. The wheel covers are near perfect. All exterior lights work perfectly as does the horn. The interior is very presentable, almost everything is original right down to the carpet. The cloth on the front seat back. There is some wear on the drivers armrest but it's minimal and the drivers side of the carpet has some discoloration from shoes over the years. The rear seats look almost new and the headliner is in very good condition. The faux wood shows well on the dash and doors. The steering wheel has a few small cracks developing but nothing serious, still very presentable. The horn, turn signals and both radios work well. All of the dash lights work, all of the gauges as do all the switches. The windows roll up and down as they should and vent windows work well. The only other item not functioning is the clock but it's still right twice a day. The car has NO rust issues, I've spent time under her and found nothing other than light surface patina. The car was sold new back east but definitely was well cared for because I know what cars that aren't look like since I'm originally from WI. I think I've covered everything, but it's possible I missed something. The car has been built from the frame up, the attention to details was job one in how things were plumbed and assembled. He was actually disappointed that you can't see detail of the frame with the body on. The car still needs to be finished but I think one can see that all the hard & expensive stuff is completed. The car does run and drive currently. He has the firewall plate, Fisher body tag, a 1951 CA license plate that was on the car and a 1947 dated title. The body is very straight, the paint is a dark blue metallic 2 stage urethane and just needs a final polish. There are a couple of small flaws but they're hardly noticeable. The door handles have been shaved as well as the trunk handle. The doors have custom painted power mirrors. The firewall was smoothed and brake master located on frame. The hood trim and grill were sanded and painted as the owner's preference. The front and rear were setup to not have bumpers, the rear valance has been reshaped with billet tail lights, license plate notch and notched for exhaust tips. There was also a spot cut out below the rear window for a 3rd brake light for safety. The doors have power window regulators installed and of course the latches. He has all the window trim for the car. There is no glass, it's all flat glass so any good auto glass shop can cut it, you can have it made tinted if you like. The headlight parts got misplaced so you'll need the hardware and there is a company that makes a conversion to 7" sealed beam. The interior is still in raw form, it allows you to finish to your taste. The dash has been reworked to fit a nice wood panel and a set of Dakota Digital gauges. It has a 70's GM tilt column with column shifter and key switch. The area behind the seats has a custom cabinet to separate the trunk and also give a nice place for the fuse panel and engine computer. Of course it has a trunk mounted battery as you can see. The roof has been lined with Dyno-Mat so far. The wiring is mostly done, just needs the interior electrical finished. The Vintage Air w/ heat has the firewall plate installed but it needs to be plumbed and the interior parts installed, the kit is included with the car. The engine and transmission are fresh rebuilds with no more than 20 miles on them. The engine is an 88 Chevy 350 w/ throttle body fuel injection and the transmission is a 700R4 automatic with 1 wire electronic lockup. The engine has an aluminum intake and valve covers, ceramic coated headers and billet air cleaner. The front and rear suspension is 1988 Jaguar XJ8, the original frame was reworked and boxed to make it more rigid. It has a large Walker radiator with temp controlled electric fan. The fuel tank was custom made with fuel pump, return line and pressure type cap and you can see in the pictures it has a custom filler location in the trunk. The brakes are 4 wheel disc, the brake booster and master are on the frame to keep the firewall clean. It rides on stock Jaguar wheels currently. I think the pictures and my description will give a pretty good idea of what this car is, I'm sure I didn't list everything because there is so much. A lot of money and time was invested to get it this far and the owner of the car knows he won't see the over $30K + time invested.
