1950 Hudson Super Eight Coupe - Only 1,074 produced - Restoration completed 2009-2010 - Very Stock Car This is a very nice restored car. I bought it with the intention of making it a mild custom, but it is so nice, stock, and rare that I can't bring myself to modify it. You just don't find such rare cars in bone-stock condition, so I want to pass it to someone who will appreciate it in its current state. The restoration was completed in 2009-2010 and still shows very well. Paint, chrome (replated), interior are all very nice. No rust anywhere. No dings/dents or scratches that I can see. The only flaws I see on the car are some water staining on the interior cloth panel of the driver's door and some paint bubbling around the vinyl top where it meets the body above the rear deck. Straight-eight engine, three-on-the-tree. Runs and drives as a restored car should. The front bumper-guards were not reinstalled, but come with the car (replated). Also included are books/manuals, as well as a full photo album documenting the restoration. Due to the restoration, the true mileage is unknown. Clean California title, which is in the name of the previous owner (signed). If that is a problem, I may be willing to get it transferred into my name before completing the sale, but I prefer to sell with the current title. Please contact me with questions. Up for sale in the Houston showroom is one heck of a find, the 1949 Hudson Super Six. The Hudson Car Company made Hudson and other brand automobiles in Detroit, Michigan from 1909 to 1954. In 1954, Hudson merged with Nash Corporation to form American Motors (AMC). The Hudson name was continued through the 1957 model year, after which it was discontinued. 1948 and 1949, the company launched their \"step-down\" bodies, which lasted through the 1954 model year. The term step-down referred to Hudson\'s placement of the passenger compartment down inside the perimeter of the frame. The riders stepped down into a floor that was surrounded by the perimeter of the car\'s frame and the result was not only a safer car, and greater passenger comfort as well, but, through a lower center of gravity and ultimately a good-handling car. In time almost all US automakers would embrace it as a means of building bodies. Automotive author Richard Langworth described the step-down models as the greatest autos of the era in articles for Consumer Guide and Collectible Automobile. Most fitted with the Super Six humongous inline 6 cylinder this one took a turn during the restoration. The builder went the with oh so popular 1950 Hudson \"Pacemaker\" inline 6 cylinder. This engine put out a spectacular 262hp and 295lb/ft of tq. To make sure the engine is getting all its fluids, a new fuel pump along with fuel return system and wiring was put in just after the gas tank was professionally cleaned. Now while you can\'t find these with power steering or a/c, and if you can you have a gem like this one. Fitted with electric power steering with an internal dampener so you can adjust it on how much your using it. A/C was provided via Vintage AC and this is a custom kit folks. Interior is familiar to the outside and not just in color but in condition as well. Also done was the switch from 6 to 12 volt, electronic fuel injection along with electronic ignition and distributor with a brand new radiator to keep this completely rebuilt engine with only 1500 miles on it cool. This Hudson for sale boast the original style bench seats that have been recovered in a gorgeous black and man is it comfy inside even the seals around the doors were replaced along with the foam insulation on the roof. Adding to a whole new ride quality is new heavy duty shocks, wheel bearings, front end alignment, transmission and rear end service, a fresh tune up with electric windshield wipers, a new steering gear and linkage, a milled intake manifold, front disc brakes with a new master cylinder and to make things more clear, new halogen headlights. Starts, accelerates, & shifts quietly. Still starts with gas pedal push & has the original old fashioned 6 volt battery; positive ground. Starting is so easy the 6 volts doesn't seem to strain. Body & Paint: solid body metals in floors & trunk (as able to see from underneath). Some bondo used on rocker in front of driver side rear wheel. Splash fender areas & wells are rust free. The repaint is a nice job with almost no blemishes (definitely no bubbles, cracking, or pops). See the added top down/windows up picture. All the glass is perfect as well as chrome-stainless framings. Windows roll up/down great; fairly snug up against top rubber seals. Vent windows open easy & close tight. Doors close nicely with hardly any effort & have good allignments with NO drops. No rust at the bottoms or skins. Interior & top: This has a power top with the original motorized hydraulic pump. The top material is as pictured needing a small repair & a plastic window replace. Top clamps nicely with very little effort. The windshield header is chrome perfect; no dents or rust. Sunvisors are in nice conditions. Engine: A straight eight original REBUILT flathead motor. Smooth operation, no oil smoke, not overheat & no valve tapping. Transmission: Original Automatic-shifts as if it is 10 years old; not 62. Stability: Stays fairly true on road, but does have steering wheel play, but may be simply the power steering* yes, power steering! THE PORSCHE 550 SPYDER, A VERY BRIEF HISTORY:- The Porsche 550 Spyder was inspired by the original Porsche 356. From 1951, Porsche 356 prototypes were built and raced by Walter Glockler. His successes led to Porsche’s decision to build the first Porsche specifically developed for racing, the 550. The engine was based on the VW Beetle flat-4. It had shaft-driven, twin overhead camshafts, a roller-bearing crankshaft and dual ignition. Displacement was 1498 cc for the 1.5-liter class. Fed by a pair of Solex carbs, it produced 110 bhp at 6200 rpm. With an aluminum, monocoque body maximized for compactness, aerodynamics and lightness, the car weighed around 1300 lb. All the factory 550 Spyders were silver in color. The first three were hand-built prototypes. 550-03 raced as a roadster at the Nurburgring Eifel Race in May 1953, winning its first race. 550-05 was introduced to the general public at the 1953 Paris Motor Show. Over the following years, The Werks Porsche team evolved and raced the 550 with outstanding success and it was recognized wherever it appeared. With the 550, Porsche was the first manufacturer to organize, external, racing sponsorship. The Porsche 550 Spyder became an active participant on European and US championship circuits between 1953 and as late as 1965. Starting in over 370 races, with approximately 95 overall wins and an additional 75 class wins, the Spyder dominated and/or embarrassed more powerful cars from the prestigious racing stables. The cars were well represented at famous circuits around the world and soon became the racing car of choice for privateers, earning the reputation of ‘Giant Killer’. Only 90 cars were built with 78 being sold to the public for motor sport purposes. For such a limited number of builds, the 550 Spyder was always in a winning position, usually finishing in the top three in its class. The beauty of the 550 was that it could be driven to the track, raced and then driven home which showed its incredible flexibility. THE JAMES DEAN SAGA:- For the younger among us, James Dean was a movie idol of the fifties. He starred in the major, movie successes East of Eden, Rebel without a Cause and Giant with the film stars of the day including Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Sal Mineo, Natalie Wood, Julie Harris, Raymond Massey, Dennis Hopper and others. However, his passion was racing. After a succession of fast cars, motorbikes, street and track races, in 1955, he traded his Porsche Super Speedster for a brand new Porsche Spyder 550. While his racing activities were contrary to the wishes of and his contract with Warner Bros, this did nothing to deter him. After breaking up with girlfriend and film star Ursula Andress he was returning home when, shortly after being cited for speeding, he collided almost head-on with a Ford Custom Wagon. The Porsche was demolished and James Dean died at the scene. At the age of 25 and the height of a movie career, this was, of course, major international news, the side effect of which was the increased, enduring fame of the Porsche 550 Spyder. MY 1955 PORSCHE 550 SPYDER:- My car is actually a 1991 reconstruction by the famous Chuck Beck. Chuck started making them in 1982 and his 550’s are widely acknowledged as being the most accurate and solidly constructed while capturing the very essence of the original 550’s with incredible handling and typical Porsche/VW reliability. Why replicas? They are what us lesser mortals have to aspire to now. Of the original 550’s that still exist, one is in Ralph Lauren’s famed collection of classic cars and another belongs to major Porsche fan, Jerry Seinfeld. The last known original sale was at a Goodings auction at Amelia Island in March, 2012 for $3.685m – as featured in Keith Martin’s “What’s My Car Worth” on the Velocity channel. Some of the replicas on the roads today have been made to look like James Dean’s “Little Bastard”, as he christened his car. Mine has stayed faithful to the original, Porsche look. The paintwork is almost immaculate with no stress cracks but it does have the minor stone chip (I think there are 4!). As you can see from the photos, even the underside is noteworthy. The milometer reflects a tad over 10,000 miles. While I can’t substantiate this, I have absolutely no reason to disbelieve it. The engine is a horizontally-opposed, 4-cylinder of 1,951 ccs, putting out approx. 125 bhp, it’s in excellent condition. It's fed by 2 twin-choke, down-draught Dellorto carburetors with chrome air filters, is fitted with an oil cooler and oil temperature gauge and drives through a trouble-free, 4-speed, manual, gearbox. At 10,000 miles I figured a special servicing was desirable and I have recent, maintenance bills for just about everything to which one needs to pay attention even having the carbureters sent out to be rebuilt. In total, I have spent nearly $6,000 since my purchase. Brakes are the traditional mix of discs in the front and drums at the rear. The front tires are recent Michelin XZX 165SR15 Radials while the rears are Michelin XH4 205/70/R15 95S Radials. The rear wheels have been set up with slight positive camber to minimize wear to the inners of the tires under acceleration. With an incredible power-to-weight ratio, both the acceleration and handling are legendary and, with the low height, seating and windshield, the whole experience is “go-kart” -like not to mention the incredible sounds from the exhaust. The engine compartment is beautifully detailed with chrome fittings and is exceptionally clean and well maintained. Paintwork is Porsche silver throughout with a black interior. It has the correct detailing and vintage authenticity. The period gauges and supplementary oil pressure and temperature gauges are operative. There is a copy Nardi, wood-rimmed steering wheel. All knobs are from billet aluminum. The wheels are chromed as are the lug nut covers. There is a center-hood, quick-release, chromed fuel filler. All the lights and their gaskets are in great condition. Security and rain protection are provided by a brand new, black, canvas, tonneau cover. Crow, vintage, racing seatbelts are fitted, five-point to the driver’s side and lap to the passenger’s. Under the hood there is an un-used EMPI tool kit, jack, etc., and tire inflator kit. There are twin, leather safety straps to the rear, clam shell. Traditional rear view is complemented by a matching-color, vintage, Spyder Mach 1 fender mirror, just as the original cars. Per the photo, the car is registered in California and I have clear, Florida title in my personal name. Buyer will be responsible for knowing title, etc., regulations for his/her own State. In 1938 the body was slightly reshaped, as were the fenders and the horizontal grille bars that gave the grill a much bolder look. Much more important for the 1938 model year were the hidden improvements. New crown contour \"Turbulator\" pistons provided a higher compression ratio that resulted in a power increase to 107hp engines. Only the Hudson straight-eights had a more favorable power-to-weight ratio. The frame center section went from an I-beam design to a sturdier X member, and coil springs replaced the former semi-elliptic springs in the rear, an industry first. Now Buick had coil springs at all four wheels. The shock absorbers were far larger than any other shock on the market, which, in combination with the coil springs all around, gave Buick its infamous mushy ride--but that\'s what Buick buyers wanted in 1938. Although 1938 was a down year for the economy, and for all auto makers, Buick produced 168,689 cars and moved up to fourth place in the industry.
