“Ask the man who owns one too many.” 1949 PACKARD EIGHT STATION SEDAN A deluxe wooden powder keg of Detroit’s finest buttercream, this is a beautifully preserved, meticulously detailed, faithful example, done for the love of the project. A west coast car, sorted, strong and solid, this is Packard’s “Double-Duty Beauty,” fully dressed, with a handsome boatload of extras. KING OF THE CARRY-ALLS… HEAR, HEAR! QUEEN OF THE HIGHBALLS… HICCUP! Country club charm. Carry-all convenience. Grand as an Adirondack lodge. With luxurious seating for six and 21 square feet of cargo space, Packard’s “Double-Duty Beauty” chauffeured post-war giddy, tipsy ballroom-hopping parties all night long, into quiet, red-eyed retreats to field and stream come first light on the weekend. Whether hauling fishing kit and hunting rifles, or blue-ribbon flats of flowers for 4-H Club competitions, it is ruggedly constructed and dutifully well-rounded as an Octoberfest beauty queen tapping kegs of Olde Frothingslosh on a 1949 auto parts calendar page. No matter what adventure it inspired, it’s elegance and engineering is without a doubt, pure Packard. According to Robert J. Neal’s wonderfully researched publication, PACKARD 1948-1950, the utilitarian Station Sedan is a unique, rare model. This exclusive, bobbed boat tail beauty is one of 3,800 examples hand-built in a very limited run, before the model was discontinued by the end of 1950. How many survived almost seventy years of inevitable decay, neglect and Mother Nature’s entropy? I’ve seen recently that they make a super-deluxe ventilated chicken coop when the Terminix® contract is up, the wheels and glass are shot out into the weeds, frame down to the ground and only the glovebox will hold a day’s fresh eggs, because the rest fall past the upholstery carcass through floors of swiss cheese to the fox. ENDLESS HOURS. COUNTLESS HANDS. A FINE EXAMPLE FROM COAST TO COAST. This particular Station Sedan benefits from extensive preservation of it’s existing personality from caches of NOS spares and even more, the talent, enthusiasm and discretion of Packard Club members who built old and new back together, so seamlessly, that it’s soul remains intact. Since 2010: 4,000 miles after an extensive cosmetic restoration. 1,000 miles on current mechanical preservation. ( Danger! Run-on story and potholes of detail ahead. ) - VIN data plate G272898 ( CA DMV renumbered, long ago. Possibly on top of the Packard renumbering of Station Sedans up to three times before selling these slow moving, expensive models over three calendar years. ) - Series 2201 - Briggs body style tag: Model 2293-5025 - Firewall theft tracking number: 837728 - Paint Scheme: W ( Arizona Beige ) - Trim Code 614: Tan leatherette & pinstripe vinyl - 120-inch wheelbase - Gross weight: 4,080 attractive pounds Assorted date stamps: - Clock: 9-48 - PPG/Herculite/LOF Safety Plate glass:10-48 - Speedometer: 11-48 ( This car was a respectable restoration candidate over ten years ago with 70,000 miles on the clock. ) A COSMETIC RESTORATION SO EYES NEVER TIRE IN ADMIRATION. Mae West opined, a woman should cultivate her curves, “They may look dangerous, but they’ll be impossible to avoid.” This Station Sedan has become again a compelling feast for the eyes, making a Vargas pin-up break from the wooden fruit crate box utility that defined wagon design since the drawl of a horse. All Packards are famous for being a sight to behold. This car is no exception, possessing an organic shape that is as much a piece of minimalist sculpture as it is a sumptuous way to get from here to there. WOOD: About 2/3 of the original honey-toned wood was preserved with a few unsalvageable pieces used for templates blended in new maple. Stripped, sanded, stained and then finished with 15 coats of marine-grade polyurethane by San Diego woodie expert, Bowden Auto Body, Escondido, CA. All refinished sections were reinstalled as factory fit, with new 3M Di-Knoc used on the door panel and tailgate inserts. BODY & PAINT: Also at Bowden, all body panels were removed and completely disassembled for blasting, sanding, prime and paint, with new metal replaced only in a front floor section. Interior floor and door shells eventually coated in POR-15 and layered in sound dampener. Factory panel fit prevails with hardware, gasketing and seals as needed between all metal and wood. Oh, and Arizona Beige? It’s nothing but pure buttercream icing deep enough to slice. TRIM: All chrome and stainless ( except for dash components ) was removed and either re-chromed or polished by the best shop in Los Angeles, Van Nuys Plating, and it shows. All rubber seals around glass, windows, doors and vents were replaced using Steele Rubber products. The wood graining around the tin window trim was redone for all four doors and both rear compartment windows, six frames total. The dash is untouched, still lovely in it’s original wood grain and chrome jewelry. INTERIOR: A complete, new and correct interior was installed by a talented upholstery shop, Armand’s Auto Upholstery, Walnut Creek, CA, whose owner owned a Station Sedan and knew them well, having restored a few west coast examples with expertise. Seat fabric, door panels, kick panels, windlace, headliner, and rubber flooring were all replaced using correct materials. Seat frames were painted. The rear cargo area plywood and stainless luggage rails were refinished with beautiful, showroom effect without compare. A removable, square-weave, wool carpet is also installed over the original-style, ribbed mat rubber flooring. Overall, proper fit and finish throughout, very well done. Finished with seat belts for five and factory floor mats. From the hushed closure of the bank vault doors, the cabin is quiet, solid and as exceptional as the exterior. The seats are firm again. The windows mechanisms roll with ease. The glovebox is the only perfect square on the whole curvaceous car! Under the original wood-grained dash, seat adjustment, dash controls and pedal release, all mechanical and electrical controls are precise and move effortlessly, operating like new again. Under the dash is tidy, and stock, with NOS switches and rebuilt overdrive cable. The Victrola-sized tube radio was removed to ease access for new harness and improve around-town gas mileage. The only uninvited guest is a hidden toggle switch for the auxiliary, inline fuel-pump. CHASSIS: Underneath, the frame and body panels are exceptionally straight and clean, without signs of accident or repair. Thoroughly steamed cleaned and wire brushed from front to rear, with removal of loose undercoat and debris from entire front clip, wheel wells, across floor panels and rockers to under gas tank, then coated in only chassis black oil-based paint. Seams sealed, no surface rust, solid as the topside of the car. A MECHANICAL RESTORATION TO REINTRODUCE MOTOR TO CAR AND COMPANY. P is for power. Taking inspiration from the powerful reputation Packard earned from V-12s to Merlins, here’s the “fire-breathing” upgrade that the factory eventually proposed to accelerate the Station Sedan behemoth into a 23rd series. But history hadn’t been so kind. So better late than never. Out with the tired, original 288 and in with this fresh 327 engine rebuilt by Ross Miller of Speedwell Garage. Ross, a master mechanic and engineer, National Packard Club judge, forum advisor, international ambassador and overall skinned-knuckle, rolled sleeves, hands-on flywheel for all roadworthy endeavors in a Packard. 327 c.i. Thunderbolt H.O. head ( iron-1953 ) w/ 4-barrel Carter carb & manifolds 180 hp, 5 bearings, solid lifters Engine H402789, cast 5-24-49 ( H=23rd series, donated from a low-mileage Super ) Note: The anemic, original 288 c.i., 135 hp, 2-barrel, G267172 CE, dated 11-9-48 ( G=22nd series ) is available as a cheap core, or fully rebuilt, from Ross Miller, Speedwell Garage, Parton, MD 21120 ( 410-357-4561 ). With the M back in motor, every component also under the hood has been rebuilt or replaced with NOS and NAPA to give this car a complete, new start on a second life with renewed cooling, vacuum, heating, electrical and fuel systems. Nothing untouched, nothing left to guess, fiddle or curse. Other assorted mechanical chores crossed off: COOLING Radiator, heater core, fan and control valve thoroughly rebuilt, with fresh hoses and coolant. ELECTRICAL With rebuilt 6v starter, generator, the car starts immediately without any hesitation and drops to idle with all lights shining bright through a complete, new Rhode Island wire harness, bumper to bumper. New ignition components, battery, master kill switch and belts. All interior switches click and snap properly. The vacuum-operated wiper motor is rebuilt and functional again for the occasional cloudburst. WHEELS / SUSPENSION / DRIVETRAIN: Two tons of controlled stop, drop and roll…The front suspension is re-bushed and tight again along with new front and rear shocks, rear leaf springs and bushings. Alignment checked, the car stands perched on new Diamond Back radial white wall tires. Complete brake service with replacement of master cylinder, hoses, wheel cylinders, shoes and drums. Wheel bearings, axle half shafts and shims. NOS emergency brake cable found, installed and properly adjusted for most confidence. The steering, column shift, overdrive and transmission are precise, as expected. Chassis is fully greased. Rolling and floating above it all like a Macy’s parade balloon, this car is still as impressively smooth as Packard’s historic Straight-Eight reputation. FUEL The four-barrel Carter carburetor is rebuilt, the gas tank cleaned and sealed, hung on new straps. An auxiliary, in-line pulse pump is installed to back up the new engine-mount pump by toggle-switch. A new muffler and exhaust vent an aromatic spring of hi-test Jean Naté. CUSTOMER DESIGNED AND ACCESSORIZED, PACKARD ENGINEERING APPROVED. In addition to the modest factory specified R-9 overdrive and fresh air heater/defroster, this car includes the following installed factory options and dealer accessories: EXTERIOR OPTIONS: - Cormorant bonnet ornament - Front auxiliary bumper guard - Dual clear road lights - Front bumper license plate holder - Door-mounted rear view mirror set - Radio antenna - White wall tires - Stainless trim rings - Enamel hubcap medallions - Rear fender skirts - Rear fender, gasoline tank fill door guard - Dual clear back-up lights, ( 24th series ) - Exhaust pipe extension tip INTERIOR OPTIONS: - Visor mounted, service record vanity mirror - Compass - Floor mats - Accelerator wear pad - Supplemental dash control light bar - Radio blank plate - Courtesy lights - Cigarette lighter, ashtray and emergency light - Turn signals - Trip odometer - Clock - Original bumper jack, base and lug wrench ENGINE COMPARTMENT OPTIONS: -Firewall mounted auxiliary light -Oil filter canister -Oil bath air cleaner A STEAMER TRUNK OF EXTRA GOOD KIT AND CABOODLE. It’s so easy to appreciate where we’re going by having a look at where we’ve been. Ephemera, accessories and spares not installed, but included with sale: - Full key set for ignition, doors and glovebox ( not hatch ) - Owner’s manuals ( 22nd and 23rd series ) - Sales brochures particular to 1949 Station Sedan - The Golden Value of Motordom, Packard’s Golden Anniversary Full-line Dealer Album w/ booklets ( oversized binder, rare ) - Holiday Magazine, July 1948, featuring Station Sedan ad - Passenger door wood panel ( period damage exchange ) - Original horn button ( 30’s style enamel is installed ) - Period sun visor, unpainted - 1949 PA license plate matched set - License plate frame set ( mounted on matched 1949 CA plates ) - Life-like tone, push button AM tube radio - Electromatic clutch assembly - Assorted mechanical spares and touch-up paint - And to hold all the ephemera, a leather-clad 30’s/40’s era steamer wardrobe trunk as a posh reminder to this car’s intended duty. THE TRUTH ALWAYS LEAKS OUT. What chores are up ahead? The car is not asking for much more attention than what can be accomplished over another six pack or single-malt… I’ve got a fresh pinion seal to replace the one that is spotting up my floor. It’s not slinging, so no rush, no hurry. While underneath, the overdrive is asking for adjustment so the trans finds reverse every time when parked, still in overdrive. The new temp sender in the head occasionally sends a false reading to the gauge. I’ve been thinking about installing a nice new oil pressure / water temp gauge cluster discreetly under the dash for accurate touring purposes anyway. Overall, this car is in fine health and at the ready. A man can never be lost when he owns a car that reminds him of a little something to do. Preservation always requires a little responsibility. The big bugs of perpetual nuisance have already been stepped on and smacked dead by an open checkbook. A CURVE IS THE LOVELIEST DISTANCE BETWEEN HERE, AND THERE, THEN AND NOW. It is an absolute delight to share with the enthusiastic every time it’s parked, abruptly turning as many heads and dropped jaws along the way as a string of firecrackers! Children clamor. Seniors hustle. Texting parents snap shots. Its well-endowed, portly shape floats quietly past, a shape so out of context today, parading like a whale, breaching amidst a sea of square automotive appliances, computer-designed for obsolescence. Once docked, Packard’s thoughtful human touch is its inspiring marvel, magic and mystery. Admiring conversation follows in its wake constantly, like the wisp of smoke trailing Buck Rodgers across the sky… If interested, you are encouraged to slip behind the wheel, the chrome and buttercream timber for a drive. It still has the scent of grandmother’s parlor, without the crystal dish of wintergreen mints, and the Flite-Glo instrument panel has a glowing luminescence at night that radiates like a jar of fireflies blazing brightly in the back of our minds, while quietly parked roadside in an owner’s imagination and memory. CUTTING TO THE CHASE. As a sincerely appreciative Packard club member, sometimes a man’s favorite car is his next one, and Just Ask The Man Who Owns One too many. There just is never enough garage space. An embarrassment of riches, cars like this are hard to catch and even harder to release. Getting a jump on spring cleaning, I’m needing to say good buy. Forget the gold rings and turtle doves. True love in a new year can always be found in a two-ton Packard hung up in a pear tree. HISTORICAL 1936 Rolls Royce 25/30 Royal Rat Rod that was a 2016 SEMA build!! This is the coolest Rolls Royce on the planet built by Street Toys. It started with a Connecticut barn find that had been stored for 50 years, it was quickly dissasembled and the work of are was started, what was used from the original car was the body, garnish moldings, leather from the seat redone to fit the front bucket seats, steering column with steering wheel and steering box, original light up license plate, head lights and grille. The cockpit was cut for an open chauffeur adding a custom duvall windshield frame and is still right hand drive with custom bucket seats using the original leather from the car, the gauges are vintage aircraft for show only, on the rear the top was chopped 12 inches and a custom plexiglass sunroof that opens and used to enter and exit the car was installed, the interior is done in a Mexican blanket with all the bright colors, bluetooth sound system from ARC audio, the windows are yellow tinted plexiglass, approximately 5 inches was cut from the lower body. The body is all polished aluminum, the rear deck lid was cut and custom louvers were installed, the taillights are from a 1935 REO Speed-wagon. Since the body was aluminum Jesse made a custom off aluminum frame, it is powered by a 1970's LS6 454 with Hilborn Electronic injectors, Custom Stainless Steel Pypes Headers with Exhaust, 700R4 transmission, 9 inch rear end, front dropped axle and 4 wheel disc brakes, 18" Rocket Solid wheels with Coker Tires. We did have excellent sponsors like: Pypes Exhaust with Headers all stainless steel and aluminum radiator.AIM Hybrid WeldingCorky WheelsCoker TiresHilborn InjectorsMSDARC AudioSince the build the car has approximately 100 miles on it. You can see the complete build at streettoysmx.comThis car has/had an excellent history:It was a few months after the Street Toys’ electric saw took 12 inches out of the lofty “6/7-seater limousine” roof height that a ray of moonlight shone on the 80-year-old car’s birth certificate. Order reference number 384 showed that Chassis no. GRM41, built at Crewe, was sold to Jack Barclay Limited of George Street, Hanover Square, London, on 21st May 1936. It was to have a coachbuilt body by Barker & Co of Olaf Street, Notting Hill, London, with delivery required in the second week of August 1936. Barker’s built cars and ceremonial coaches for royalty, including King George V. It had built 20 carriages for Queen Victoria. The customer this time? Fanfare for The Rt Hon Lord Tredegar of Tredegar Park, Newport, Monmouth – art consultant to King George and Queen Mary. This was THE key – a titled history. But there was more, much more. Sam said: “This is so crazy – to think such famous people, even royalty, have travelled in this car and here we were cutting it up. “What we’re doing will blow people’s socks off – and I think the old Lord would’ve been right up for it. “He was an artist and an eccentric who liked to shock and surprise people, and our Rolls Rat Rod will do just that!” Evan Frederic Morgan was born in London’s Portman Square in 1893, his father Courtenay Morgan, 1st Viscount Tredegar of Monmouth, and his mother Lady Katharine Carnegie. Courtenay fought in the Battle of the Light Brigade – and survived. As did his trusty steed, finally peacefully buried in state in the family home grounds. In 1934 – two years before he ordered this Rolls - Evan inherited the title and the millions that went with it from the historic Welsh family’s iron and coal empire and his mother’s Scottish family line. And blew them. An establishment figure educated at Eton and Oxford, he had a government office in Whitehall, worked his way close to Prime Minister Lloyd George, and also became chamberlain to the Pope after converting to Roman Catholicism. Officially remembered as a Welsh poet and author, he lived the high life as one of the debauched gay ‘Bright Young Things’ of the 1930s who dined with high-ranking Nazis in the pre-war years and travelled the world. His eccentric lifestyle included keeping a menagerie of exotic animals with which he showed amazing interaction. These included a kangaroo called Somerset that he taught to box, macaws with a favourite named Blue Boy, and a pond of pink flamingos. The Hallowe’en link? He was heavily into the occult with infamous occultist Aleister ‘The Great Beast’ Crowley, allegedly with a “Magick Room” at Tredegar House and his own tag ‘The Black Monk’. Twice married – first to an actress then a Russian princess – but more pertinently close with countless male friends and a host of celebrities that included writer HG Wells, he never found true love nor left an heir when, after years of poor health, he died of cancer aged just 54 in 1949. On paper he left £2.5 million but more was owed in death duties. What revelations! Tredegar House Tredegar House today is a National Trust-run magnificent stately home a stone’s throw from the M4 motorway. With many original features from its heyday, it has featured in such TV dramas as Upstairs Downstairs, Dr Who – hence a Dalek in the stables - Torchwood, and Sherlock Holmes. Amusingly the family trail links to 17TH Century Welsh seafarer Captain Sir Henry Morgan, saluted today in a brand of rum carrying the slogan “To Life, Love and Loot” – and it is that Morgan that generates most enquiries at Tredegar. As to the Rolls-buying Lord Tredegar, biographer William Cross told me: “Evan always had luxury cars. When not being driven about he drove himself but erratically - Toad of Toad Hall was more accomplished. “In around 1920, Aldous Huxley portrays Evan as the fictional Ivor Lomard in his novel ‘Crome Yellow’ whizzing around the country driving a car – so Evan must have started to drive early in his Oxford student days in WW1.” He added: “One servant’s story is of Evan turning up once at Tredegar House in a green sports car which was too wide to be garaged. “His father, Courtenay, wouldn’t have it anywhere and the car was never seen again. “Another servant said when Evan’s car arrived (when he became Lord Tredegar) it would be clocked at the front entrance gate, a telephone call would be put through from the Lodge to the Hall Boy, who would go upstairs on the roof and put up the standard, so the flag was flying when Evan arrived.” This car was built to be shown at SEMA and does run and drive, it is a running work of art. Buyer is to pay all shipping and transport cost, buyer is to make a $500 none refundable deposit within 24 hours of sale and the balance is due in full within 7 days of sale. You are welcome to come and inspect the car or have it inspected before buying or making offer sold as is.

Equipped with a new 5.7-liter V8 coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission, the LX 570 sends 383-hp to the ground via four-wheel drive. Inside, the LX 570 applies supple leather with genuine wood trim and chrome accents. Combine these elegant materials with features such as automatic four-zone climate control and premium audio system and the LX 570 really starts to shine. The entire family is kept safe with standard features such as stability control, all-row overhead curtain airbags and front and rear side airbags. The LX 570 is a carry-over for 2015. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Lexus LX 570 is a full-size luxury sport-utility vehicle that's relaxing to drive on long trips as it glides down the highway with style and ease. It can transport up to eight people and haul their gear across great distances in comfort, as well as tow hefty loads. It has strong acceleration performance and excellent handling response for a large SUV. The 2015 Lexus LX 570 competes with the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, Infiniti QX80, Audi Q7, Land Rover Range Rover, and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. Escalade is all new for 2015, while Navigator is updated; Range Rover and GL-Class were all new for 2013, while the Lexus got a facelift on its chassis that was last redesigned for 2008. The LX 570 is EPA-rated at 12/17 mpg City/Highway. We got 13.4 mpg in hilly city and 72-mph highway driving for a week. For 2015, LX 570 gets the full-tilt multimedia capability, with standard Siri Eyes Free Mode which uses the latest iPhone models to enable you to call contacts, play iTunes, get navigation commands and more. There's also the Lexus Enform App Suite which basically turns your phone into a super remote that can do just about everything but drive your kids to school. This Suite is upgraded for 2015 to include iHeartRadio 4.0 and Slacker. The Lexus LX 570 uses the same heavy-duty frame and stout powertrain as the Toyota Land Cruiser, and like the Land Cruiser, the Lexus is designed for extraordinary versatility, a rare combination of utility and luxury. But luxury and technology come first with the Lexus, from its active suspension and adaptive headlamps to its Mark Levinson audio system and high quality interior. The Land Cruiser is better equipped for rigorous off-road use, while the Lexus is more for the family who wants to travel in style and safety to a snowy ski resort, a ranch house down a long dirt road, or a mountain fishing lodge. Still, the Lexus has 44 chops. The Land Cruiser is rated to tow a mega 8500 pounds, while the Lexus can tow 7000 pounds, which is like a NASCAR stock car in a 22-foot trailer with tools. Trailer Sway Control is standard. We towed a 16-foot flatbed trailer carrying a puny sports car, and the big SUV's rugged chassis and V8 engine (with 403 pound-feet of torque) barely felt it, at 70 mph. So we upped the load to a 24-foot travel trailer, and the LX 570 still never broke a sweat. Later we hit the full 7000-pound load, see our Driving Impressions. A tri-lingual navigation hard-disc system incorporates Bluetooth, Lexus Enform with Safety Connect, Lexus Insider, music streaming, and XM NavTraffic, NavWeather, Stocks and Sports. Smart Access keyless entry unlocks all five doors when the driver touches a door or tailgate. Available but not standard are a pre-collision system with adaptive radar cruise control, and a front and side monitor system with cameras inside the grille and below the passenger sideview mirror. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The most noticeable feature of the LX 570 is what Lexus calls the spindle grille, which visually unites the upper and lower air openings into a sharp hourglass shape, like a spindle stretching the imagination. A version of this spindle grill appears on every Lexus. The bumper is mostly hidden, so the spindle is visually dominant. The LX 570 is the same length as the Range Rover but looks bigger, perhaps because there is more overhang, because the Lexus wheelbase is shorter. Or perhaps because of the chrome in the grille and rear bumper; or perhaps because of the slab sides. Or maybe it's the 20-inch 10-spoke wheels, beautiful in alloy painted graphite. Broad mirrors, pronounced wheel arches and a wide stance give it muscularity as well as bulk. The projector-beam lamps and LED running lights are sharply defined, while the recessed foglamps look deep and chiseled. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Lexus LX 570 is smooth, quiet and untroubled. It's composed and relaxed at higher speeds. The commanding view from its height, combined with the lack of noise and vibration, combine to create the sensation of a protected cabin, and a sense of well-being. The 5.7-liter V8 is the same 383-horsepower engine used in the big Tundra pickup truck. It makes a ton of torque at low rpm, so the LX moves out readily at part throttle. More than 90 percent of its maximum 403 foot-pounds is available before 2200 rpm, so most of the time the engine just loafs. The 6-speed transmission has a low first gear, useful for towing. At the top end of the transmission, both fifth and sixth gears are overdrives, with 72 mph coming at 2000 rpm. Poor fuel economy is the price of power and weight, not to mention tall box-like aerodynamics. The LX 570 is EPA rated at 12 mpg city and 17 mpg highway. We got 13.4 mpg in hilly city and 72-mph highway driving for a week. Drawing from its Land Cruiser heritage, the LX has the guts of a true 44. In bad weather it comes into its own, with a Torsen limited-slip center differential biasing torque to maximize traction. The four-wheel-drive system has four modes, actuated by a toggle switch on the center console. It's possible to lock the center differential in high or low range, or leave it open in either range. Normal use is the unlocked high mode. When the going gets really bad, locking the center differential gives more traction, while low range is for extreme challenges, for example deep sand, mud or snow, or boulders to cross. Low range can be supported by Crawl Control with Turn Assist. On steep downhill trails, a driver can take his feet off the pedals and crawl control will do the rest, performing perfect magic on the brakes to maintain a set low speed. Turn Assist helps tighten turning by braking the inside rear wheel so the vehicle pivots a bit. The Lexus LX also uses electronic traction control (A-TRAC) to prevent wheelspin. We have considerable experience with A-TRAC and it's always provided enough traction for our unplanned events. Selectable (if not planned) modes include Rock, Rock and Dirt, Mogul, Loose Rock, or Mud and Sand. The Lexus LX suspension offers both a smooth ride and steady cornering. Some vehicles in this class use air suspensions, but the LX uses more traditional and coil springs, with an Active Variable Damping System (AVS) that controls body pitch and dive. We had a chance to drive the LX with spirit over some mountain roads. In Sport mode, the suspension stays on an even keel during enhanced acceleration and braking. The brakes are big and powerful, ventilated discs with Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Force Distribution to balance braking on slippery surfaces. A switch on the dash selects Sport, Normal, or Comfort suspension damping. Comfort was good most of the time, and there wasn't much difference at Normal; but we could really feel the Sport mode, especially in switchback curves. Maneuvering a big SUV can be challenging. Parking is made easier by variable gear-ratio steering, needing less effort steering at slow speeds. The challenge with the LX is visibility; it's hard to see the front corners, and the rear headrests get in the way out the back window. But that's what cameras are for. There are cameras in the grille and passenger sideview mirror, with the otherwise blind spots revealed on a screen. There are also sensors to warn of objects near the corners of the car. It all makes parking easier, quicker and safer. At the other extreme from mall parking, we hitched up a 7,000-pound trailer and found the engine and transmission had no trouble hauling the load up hills. There's a manual mode for the 6-speed automatic, but we didn't need it that much, not even downhill, where the transmission will downshift on its own to slow the rig. The uphill/downhill shift logic felt good to us, responding to subtle throttle inputs. A Pre-Collision System is optional. It uses radar to determine if a crash is imminent, in which case it hits the brakes to slow the vehicle, and tightens the seatbelts. However, we are hearing reports of these systems going off on their own. Driving down the freeway at 65 mph, and your car slams on the brakes for no reason; it happened to us at night in a Volvo XC60. We know of no cases where it's happened to a Lexus LX. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The Lexus LX 570 cabin is luxurious. There are two leathers, black or parchment, each with mahogany trim. There's a dramatic difference between them: Black feels like a dark and intimate den, while Parchment makes a bright and cheery sunroom. While many prefer black or gray interiors, we like the Parchment. Stitching on the seats is precise. The Luxury Package upgrades to semi-aniline leather and extends the mahogany trim. Still striving, the LX 570 has no less than four climate zones, with rear controls for temp and fan. A total of 28 vents distribute air flow, after being filtered for micro-dust and pollen, and blown by a blower with seven levels. The only problem, for the driver that's all alone, is that the controls aren't intuitive, and the fan knob is located away from the temp control, so your eyes have to move around. Like any tall vehicle, entry takes a big step, so there are sturdy grab handles in front. But with Active Height Control, the car drops down 2 inches when it's stopped. The roomy and supportive driver's seat adjusts 14 ways, and the passenger seat 12 ways, with lumbar for both. When the ignition is turned off, the driver's seat and steering wheel retract to make more room to exit. There's a vast 43 inches of legroom in front, and the moonroof gives the rear seats the feeling of headroom, more than 38 inches. Cubby storage for the driver comes up short, as there's no place for a cell phone, keys, sunglasses or wallet. The lid to the center console is a padded extending armrest, hiding a Cool Box keeping a cold one at your elbow. Or your grapes cool, or your bait fresh, but maybe not both. For groceries or other everyday uses, the 15-cubic-foot area behind the third row is sufficient. Third-row entry is made easy with a touch-and-tumble seat on the passenger side second row. It's still a bit of a crawl, but the third row can handle two adults; they say three, but the person in the middle isn't going to be happy unless the other two are gorgeous. If it's cargo you're carrying, you'll have 15 cubic feet behind the third row, good enough for groceries and things. The third-row seats split 50/50 and stow against the side of the cabin, creating 41 cubic feet. Then the second-row seats fold to double that space, to 83.1 cubic feet. The rear hatch opens using the key fob; the tailgate opens manually with a lever on the tailgate. The cockpit switchgear is uncluttered, partly thanks to steering wheel controls. There's a huge speedo and tach, perfectly lit in organic white, dominating the instrument panel and sandwiching neat round gauges for fuel, coolant temp, voltage and oil pressure. There's also a digital display window squeezed in there, which offers too much information. At the top of the center stack, a Thin Film Transistor (TFT) color multi-information display indicates steering wheel angle, digital speed, turn-by-turn navigation, multi-terrain mode, suspension height, outside temperature, current mpg, mpg since refueling, cruise range, miles driven since start, tire pressure, and warnings. XM Traffic selects the least crowded route to a destination. The Mark Levinson option provides an upgrade equal to any automotive audio. A hard drive offers 30 gigabytes for music storage, playable through 19 speakers that generate true surround sound. The system is compelling and memorable. Built into the interior are 10 airbags, including two knee airbags. A roll-sensing curtain airbag is designed to protect all three rows, and second-row passengers also have separate seat-mounted side airbags. All eight seats have three-point seatbelt systems. Active headrests are standard on the front seats. In the event of a rear-end collision, the headrests automatically tilt forward to limit the chance of whiplash injuries. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary The Lexus LX 570 offers luxury, capability off road, towing, 8-passenger seating, smooth ride, big power, and taut handling for a huge SUV. Last redesigned for the 2008 model year, it's getting long in the tooth and has been bypassed by some newer designs. Mitch McCullough contributed to this report, with Sam Moses reporting from the Pacific Northwest. Upon completion of the financial elements of the transaction (you paying us), we encourage you to insure the vehicle from that date forward. We bear NO RESPONSIBILITY for anything that happens to your vehicle once it is out of our control. Vehicles left at our facility for more than 3 days after payment will not be covered by our insurance unless previous arrangements have been made in writing prior to payment. WarrantyBalance of Factory WarrantyWe estimate factory warranty expiration dates using vehicle production dates and Carfax information. We are not responsible for factory warranty expiration dates, remaining warranty time, type, validity, or other information. If you want to be certain of the exact warranty expiration date, terms, validity, etc., please verify this information with a certified franchise dealer of the applicable car make. In the course of business, we try to match our risk with areas where we have control over our service level. We hope you understand this. TermsPayment Types:Certified Funds and Institutional FinancingFees:Our auctions have no hidden fees. All in State vehicles are subject to a $112 Documentary fee and out of State vehicles are subject to a $133 Documentary fee. This fee covers the paperwork involved in transferring a vehicle into your name. It applies to dealers, wholesalers, international transactions, priests, you get the gist. We also offer a 30 day transit tag for buyers from outside of PA. This tag is available at a cost to you of $55 and we will need a valid insurance card and driver's license to issue this tag. The last optional service is a Vehicle Prep Package. We offer a Deluxe Detail for $185 which includes the vehicle to be detailed professionally and a full tank of premium fuel when you pick it up (vehicles over 25 gallons may not apply). This may sound odd to you, but we often ship cars, in which case they are sent with very little fuel at the request of the shipping company. Terms:We require a $500 non-refundable deposit via Paypal within 24 hours of auctions close. This will hold the car for you and you exclusively for up to 7 days while you gather your funds or finalize your financing. We will refuse any other offers on the vehicle and will begin preparing the vehicle and documents for your delivery. Any financing arrangements are strictly between you and the lender and do not impact your contract to purchase the vehicle. The deposit is not refundable if you change your mind or if you cannot obtain financing on the vehicle. Should you need us to hold the car beyond the week, we ask for a deposit of $500 for every $10,000 of vehicle value. This will protect you as well as us. This deposit is the only liquidated damages you would be expected to forfeit should you fail to follow through with our contract to purchase the vehicle. Please call us at (610)644-6112 before bidding to inquire about any special arrangements outside of the terms listed above. Car Connections USA, Inc and its employees, directors and managers bear no resposibility for delays in shipping, damage to or loss of the vehicle once it is in the shippers control or any other liability related to the shipment of your vehicle. When the shipper picks the vehicle up at our facility, we will review the condition of the vehicle with the driver and will sign a Bill of Lading describing any deficiencies or cosmetic blemishes noted during our walkaround. Many shippers try to protect their liability by marking the Bill of Lading as though the car has hundreds of imperfections. We will not allow this to happen. We encourage you to examine the vehicle closely upon its arrival and to take up any concerns about damage or cosmetic imperfections at the time of arrival BEFORE SIGNING THE BILL OF LADING. Once you sign the Bill of Lading, the shipper is realeased from liability and you are on your own. Should you find surprise damage and see that it is on the Bill of Lading, please contact us promptly and email us the Bill of Lading. We will compare it to our copy and notify you of any discrepancies. Some shippers damage a vehicle and simply document the damage on the Bill of Lading as though it existed at the time they picked it up. We describe our vehicles and find it VERY unlikely that you would find a surprise upon arrival. About Us Car Connections USA, Inc was founded in 2005 by Dave Coughlin. Car Connections USA, Inc was founded in an effort to fix much of what we believe is wrong with the car industry. Dave graduated from the Wharton School of Business at The University of Pennsylvania in 1996. After graduation, Dave spent 6 years working in Public Accounting and Consulting for PricewaterhouseCoopers,LLP. A Word From Our Founder: During my tenure at PwC, people would often ask me to help them find, buy or sell cars. It frustrated me to no end to have only limited ability to help people negotiate. Frankly, I was disgusted by the lack of knowledge and professionalism in the automobile industry. In 2002, I resigned my position with PwC to chase my dream in the automobile industry. I committed all of my resources to building an automobile business based upon knowledge, integrity and value. Today, our Dealership provides these three factors to our clients. We offer you our knowledge at no cost. If you have a question about a car you own or are considering buying, we encourage you to contact us for advice. We offer integrity by giving honest advice and honest descriptions of the cars we sell. If you ask us to compare one of our cars and another one you’re considering, we will give you accurate data about both cars to help you decide upon the right one. Value is offered in our low prices. We sell our cars consistently for thousands below franchise dealer prices. How much are you willing to pay for marble floors and fancy showrooms? We operate on a low overhead model that enables us to sell cars with minimal markup. We know your time is valuable and we appreciate your taking time to learn more about our organization. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have. We are looking forward to making your next car buying experience a positive one!
