But, given its history, it seems the car was always destined for a touch of greatness. Built in November of 1969 at Leeds Assembly in Kansas City, Kansas, this exclusive drop-top was shipped directly to Berger Chevrolet where it likely became the primary transportation of Vivian Berger, Dale Berger Sr.'s wife. Over the next three decades, the car served four additional owners as a well-preserved survivor. Then, circa 2002, its sixth and most recent owner orchestrated a 3-year, rotisserie restoration that logged roughly 2,400 hours of labor. Laser-straight bodywork, perfected by Piedmont, South Carolina's Chuck Miller's Restorations, wrapped a new hood, new fenders, new quarters and new trunk drops in a correct layer of Tuxedo Black 2-stage. That glossy pigment hangs new stainless and fresh chrome around a nostalgic Berger emblem and clean Super Sport ornamentation. And everything rides under correct Black vinyl that, because of the restorers' obsession with quality, was the third top installed during the car's detailed overhaul. ENGINE Toss this classic's hood and you'll find an original, 396 cubic inch big block that was bored .030 over and fully rebuilt by the professionals at Ewing Automotive Machine in Snellville, Georgia. At the top of the Chevy Orange mill, a chrome, correctly decaled air cleaner forces oxygen in to a correct Quadrajet carburetor that was restored by Kunz Automotive of St. Louis, Missouri. That carb rides on a factory intake, which feeds factory heads that hang over a GM-spec cam and GM-spec valves. At the back of that intake, a traditional points distributor sequences fire through Packard TV R Suppression cables. Below those cables, chrome valve covers reflect correct exhaust manifolds. And at the front of the block, GM hoses channel water past an original alternator and correct Frigidaire AC compressor with the help of a beefy radiator and familiar tower clamps. Everything, from the car's original starter and correct Delco battery all the way to its Harrison firewall components and Delco Moraine brake booster, adds a feeling of authenticity to the painted and decaled engine bay. And, as expected, a correct 3969854 casting number, a correct "CTW" assembly stamp and a matching partial VIN authenticate the powerplant's legendary status. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Naturally, this Chevy's road-ready chassis has been restored to the same high standards as the aforementioned body panels and engine compartment. Behind the stout big block, an original Turbo-Hydramatic 400 hangs a correct "70-CF" assembly tag opposite a matching partial VIN. That tough gearbox, rebuilt by Snellville, Georgia's Neal Racing Transmissions, twists power to a correct 12-bolt axle. Holding that killer drivetrain off the ground is a heavy-duty F41 sports suspension, which centers factory power steering between stiff springs, boxed control arms and sturdy sway bars. The car's rebuilt power front disc and rear drum brake system is present, accounted for and functions exceptionally well. The aforementioned exhaust manifolds dump spent gases in to precise Gardner pipes, which breathe through correct resonators, throaty mufflers and polished stainless tips. Power meets the pavement through stylish Super Sport wheels, which lap F70-14 Goodyear Polyglas tires around stainless trim rings and requisite "SS" center caps. And mostly original, Satin Black floors, fitted with fresh rear wheelhouses during the car's extensive rebuild, serve as the perfect backdrop for a sandblasted and powdercoated frame. INTERIOR Decked in correct Medium Red vinyl, this convertible's fully restored interior feels comfortable and inviting. Its slick Strato bucket front and rear bench seats, which feature factory power adjustment for the car's driver, show virtually no signs of wear. In front of those seats, an original dash hangs a deluxe Chevelle gauge cluster above correct climate controls and a Delco AM/FM radio. Below that dash, fresh carpet centers a traditional horseshoe shifter inside an attractive, stainless-trimmed console. At the sides of that carpet, clean, "SS" branded door panels frame factory power windows and factory power door locks. In front of the driver, an NOS cushion-grip steering wheel laps a tilting column. And behind the passengers, a power-operated trunk centers a stickered spare and correct jack between a fresh mat and correct decklid decals. BODYWORK/TRIM The beneficiary of a 15-year, $100K restoration that was completed in the Summer of 2015, this fully sorted Dodge mixes killer street presence with classic MoPar attitude. That reboot began with a partially restored body that was sandblasted all the way to bare metal. That metal revealed a solid fuselage that, after the addition of a new trunk pan and a few patches, was massaged and block-sanded into a collection of virtually flawless surfaces. Once those surfaces were completely clean and fully prepped, their all-business demeanor was reanimated in smooth 2-stage that reflects correct Bright Blue Metallic pigment. And today, the car rolls as one lust worthy classic that's ready to show AND go! Every bit of this B-Body's bright ornamentation appears straight and presents well. And while it's really hard to determine whether all those baubles and bolt-ons are original, they certainly look nice! At the front of the car, a restored grille hangs a bright "R/T" script between four halogen headlamps, a clean chrome bumper and crystal clear parking lights. Behind that grille, correct fender-mount turn signals frame a silver-detailed hood that flows to a factory antenna and satin-finish windshield wipers. Behind that hood, correctly tinted glass founds pristine stainless trim beneath correct drip rails and a correct driver's mirror. Below that glass, a sculpted profile anchors traditional Chrysler door handles and dent-free rocker guards between small "HEMI" emblems, bright "R/T" scripts, small marker lamps and fresh wheel frames. And at the back of the car, a satin valance hangs ornate taillights and another "R/T" script between polished exhaust tips, a second chrome bumper and a correct bumblebee stripe. ENGINE Toss this coupe's light hood and you'll find an original, 426 cubic inch Hemi V8 that's authenticated by a famous 2468330 casting number and matching partial VIN. As Plymouth's top option for power hungry gearheads, Chrysler's legendary elephant block utilizes cast iron heads, an oversquare bore, a forged steel crank, forged steel rods, forged aluminum pistons and a hydraulic cam to twist stout 10.25 to 1 compression into a stated 425 horsepower and 490 lb./ft. of torque. All that high performance hardware spins in a glossy, Hemi Orange block that hangs attractive, Organisol-coated valve covers over correct, low-restriction exhaust manifolds. A perfect mixture of fuel, and oxygen is supplied by a polished and decaled air cleaner, correct Carter carburetors and a correct aluminum intake. Compression is sparked by Chrysler Electronic Suppression cables, snapped onto a correct points distributor. And resultant combustion is cooled by a big, 26-inch radiator that's fitted with pliable hoses via old school squeeze clamps. Visually, the body-matched engine compartment is clean and predictably impressive. Thanks to the car's thorough rebuild, the big mill performs just as well as when it rolled out of the showroom. A roster of correct and restored details includes items like factory decals, a familiar Chrysler washer reservoir and a reproduction MoPar battery. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Slide under this solid B-Body and you'll find a virtually spotless chassis that's framed by original factory undercoating. At the center of those bones, an original A727 TorqueFlite, which hangs a correct PK2801544K part number beneath a matching partial VIN, spins power to a correct 8.75-inch axle. That spirited driveline rides in a correct, completely restored Hemi Suspension, which is fitted with correct power steering. Stops come courtesy of correct heavy-duty power drum brakes. Exhaust is handled by upgraded, 3-inch tubes, which bend around an H-shaped crossover and brash Flowmaster mufflers. And everything rolls on Bright Blue Metallic steelies, which twist correct F70-15 Goodyear Speedway redlines around brilliant fratzog center caps. It is made of composite materials over a steel frame, with aluminum sills and strengthened cowl. If a Viper is menacing, the ACR is version is downright evil incarnate. The Viper's sharp front edges and gaping maw are Braille for 'get out of my way.' A deep front spoiler and sloping hood wedged between two fenders help keep it from going airborne at three-mile-a-minute speeds, as does the subtle rear wing, rear suspension belly pan and the sizable diffuser under the rear end; don't back this up anywhere near a curb. Cooling air is funneled in through the trademark four-slot grille and exhausted through six extractor vents in the hood; when idling or moving very slowly the hot air wafting out those vents makes the forward view distorted much like the rear window glass. Even the bubble top roof serves a purpose, enabling the occupants to fit with helmets on. The roadster's folding soft top is manually-operated and stows neatly behind the seats but you must get out of the car to complete the five-second operation. The glass rear window has a defroster so visibility equals the coupe, and headroom is similar. Xenon headlamps are standard, finally endowing the Viper with suitable vision for night drives; the snake's head center brake light continues. And like the earliest Vipers, the exhaust pipes, even on GTS coupes, exit right under the door ahead of the rear-wheel; expect drive-through attendants to ask you to turn it off so they can hear you. The fuel tank is a bit smaller at 16 gallons (compared with the previous 18.5), but the engine is more efficient so range isn't severely impacted. Besides, 2.5 gallons of gas is just an extra 15 pounds you don't need in a race car. Eight color choices are offered, with five choices in stripe color to complement or counter the primary shade. There are also three choices in wheels, although none is said to be significantly lighter than the others, so choosing them is mostly a style consideration. And you thought it only looked loud. From here on, everything you do must give the car due consideration for its abilities, and unless you race regularly or work in automotive testing, your own lack of abilities. This is the only production 600-hp car sold in the United States that does not have all-wheel drive, electronic stability control, or both, and as such is not recommended for inflated egos or the inexperienced. The Viper is a brutally honest car and if you direct it to do something stupid, it will do something stupid. That said, the Viper is actually quite docile trundling around town. The new twin-disc clutch takes less effort and offers smoother, more precise engagement, so you can get in motion without even using the throttle. The fastest launches are not done with your foot on the floor as that would merely spin the back tires; on many road surfaces you'll need second gear before the Viper gains good traction and lunges toward the horizon like a greyhound with ears laid back. When it reaches the heart of its power in second gear, you've passed the legal speed limit in most states, with four gears remaining. If you took the average interstate on-ramp as fast as possible you'd hit the highway doing somewhere north of 120 mph. Find an open track long enough, and the Viper coupe is said to top 200 mph. Our experience suggests it pulls hard at any speed. Expect no more than 20 minutes out of a tank of fuel at peak velocity. On the other hand, you can drive around never exceeding 1500 rpm (out of 6300) and still reach 80 mph in the same time most plebian cars do. Extremely tall gearing means a Viper will idle at more than 40 mph in top gear. Its low-rpm torque and excellent tractability allows it to go uphill at 1000 rpm in fifth gear without complaint. The new shifter and gearbox are a big improvement over the old one, but they retain the irritating skip-shift function that sends the lever from first to fourth in slow-speed acceleration to help achieve a better EPA fuel-economy rating. And despite raising horsepower by nearly 100, the car is more efficient, with EPA ratings up to 13/22 for 2008. Making the ultimate sacrifice (driving a Viper sensibly) we recorded better than 16 mpg in everyday driving. Moderate weight and tall gears have their advantages. Five- and six-hundred horsepower cars are more common everyday, but nothing with this power level weighs as little as the Viper's 3450 pounds. Indeed, only some non-U.S. exotics and the Bugatti Veyron, at more than a million dollars for its 987 horsepower, offers a significantly better power to weight ratio. Ride comfort is par for the course on a car that changes direction like this and can pin your own weight against the door or seatbelt. Run-flat tires are no longer employed and the foot-wide Michelin Pilot Sport 2s give superb grip without the small-bump punishment run-flats impart. Suspension bits are all aluminum and nicely calibrated for poor road compliance and razor-sharp response. Some super-serious types might like a bit more rebound control in back, easy to accomplish using aftermarket parts. Brakes are immense and easy to modulate; a light touch of the pedal brings mild slowing, with retarding increasing directly with more pedal pressure. Fade is not an issue, the ABS is ideally tuned, and the net effect is a controlled crash with no damage. A few cars may brake as well, generate similar lateral grip, get around a race course with similar lap times, or accelerate like this, but few can do all like a Viper, and none can do it for the money. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The term cockpit applies as well to a Viper as any other car. A simple push on the button release atop the door pops it open, and it's not a big opening requiring a smidge of slide and contort slightly to get in. However, once inside you will find surprising head and legroom given the car's external dimensions (less than four feet high) and the fact that you are essentially wedged between the engine/gearbox and exhaust pipes. Although the seats sport long cushions for thigh support and big bolsters to keep you contained, you wouldn't slide far without them given the wall-size center console and door adjacent. Seat controls are manual and limited to forward and backward; there's no lumbar or cushion height adjustment, but the tilt wheel and power adjustable pedals help everyone fit. The pedals are offset to the left a bit and include a dead pedal to brace your left foot on when not shifting, but the floating gas pedal is not ideal for heel-and-toe pedaling. Leather trims the steering wheel and shift knob, while seats have suede-like center sections with color options; the seat sides and interior are all black. It's not fancy in here, with plastic a frequent surface because it's light, inexpensive, easy to clean, and easy to cut up to add a roll cage, light and radio switching, and so forth. Dead ahead of the driver is the tachometer, with fuel to the left and speed to the right; the Viper won't run to the top number (220 mph) but it will go well 'round. Some mental recalibration may be in order as most cars are not traveling 110 mph with the needle straight up. Sloping down to the right of the wheel are oil pressure (closest to line of sight, where it should be), oil temperature, water temperature, and voltage. All instruments are black numbers on white faces and an easy read, although the oil pressure gauge reflects in the windshield at night. The bezels around the gauges may be optioned up in different trim. In keeping with its strictly (go fast) business attitude, the steering wheel has just one button on it: the horn. And there are no cup holders. You might feel tempted to Zip-tie your commuter cup to a roll bar and run a hose out of it for sipping, through your helmet, of course. Air conditioning is standard and quickly cools the tiny volume of air space inside, and in warm weather the engine and pipes surrounding you can quickly turn the cockpit into a mild oven. You can now add navigation to the electronic entertainment, but your phone should be stowed; they'd never hear you over the din. Visibility is relatively good for a low-slung beast. The mirrors aren't filled by the fat rear fenders and although the glass backlight might distort them, sizable objects are easily detected behind. The windshield doesn't blend in to the roof as on some cars, so the forward view upward is marginal; you may need to lean forward and peer up to see traffic lights, and the rearview mirror and right front fender conspire to make a very small area to see what's up and to the right, such as sharp uphill right-handers or merging traffic. Dodge claims trunk space of 14.6 cubic feet under the large hatch opening, but that seems optimistic; maybe they're including the rear suspension and fuel tank in that figure. That said, the GTS does have enough room for a couple of overnight bags or maybe your helmet and driving suit. There's no spare tire, instead there's a small air compressor and fix-kit; that makes sense because there'd be nowhere to put a massive, flat tire. The roadster's trunk is notably smaller but it can still hold a wheeled suitcase and carry-on bags. If the top is up there is space behind the seats for jackets and lighter items; this space disappears with the top down but trunk space does not change. The roadster also comes across as quieter sometimes as it's less of an echo chamber, but it is otherwise similar to the GTS and just. Bang for your buck literally can't be matched, as you will likely spend more to better any battle of numbers bench racers are apt to argue about. To this very day, 1953-62 Corvettes are highly desirable collectables that continue to be some of the most sought after cars on the planet. And this pristine roadster, the beneficiary of a fresh body-off restoration, is a perfect example of why. With a hot 283/4-speed drivetrain and stunning red on red aesthetics, it's an excellent example of Golden Age Americana. And, if you're looking for a unique classic that you can drive, show off and watch appreciate, it's the fully sorted head turner you've been patiently waiting for! BODYWORK/TRIM Stripped all the way down to glass, this contoured roadster's curvaceous body was massaged back to life during a thorough, body-off restoration. Like most C1s, the car was originally assembled at GM's new-for-1954 St. Louis manufacturing facility. And, like most restored C1s, its fit and finish presents much better now than it did 57 years ago. In fact, judging by the looks of this Chevy's smooth fuselage, there's no evidence it has ever seen any kind of catastrophic damage. And today, layered in vivid Signet Red 2-stage, the car rolls as one spectacular classic that's superbly detailed. 1958 to 1962 was a banner era for the Corvette, as Chevrolet wanted to prove its new flagship could run with the best cars in the world while retaining classic style that would eventually bear an American icon. At the front of this polished and refinished drop-top, a toothy grille rides between chrome-trimmed headlights, a translucent header roundel and chrome-trimmed parking lamps. In front of that grille, chrome nose guards reflect intricate bumpers, which bend around chrome-trimmed fenders that are detailed with small cross-flags and finned cove inserts. Between those fenders, a '58-exclusive hood leads the eye to polished wipers, classy glass and a fresh White roof that's supplemented by a factory hardtop. At the back of that hood, traditional door handles float behind a stylish driver's mirror. And at the back of those doors, a flowing decklid hangs a second Corvette roundel and '58-exclusive trunk spears between chrome bumpers, small reflectors and flush, chrome-trimmed taillights. ENGINE Tilt this roadster's lightweight hood and you'll find a correct, 283 cubic inch Chevrolet V8 that hangs a high performance (CU) assembly stamp in front of a familiar 3737739 casting number and September (J) 15th (15) 1957 (7) casting date. GM's ultimate carbureted option for the 1958 model year, and factory-rated at 270 horsepower, this tough small block features the proven square bore/solid lifter set-up that put Chevrolet muscle cars on the map. At the top of the mill, reliable Carter carburetors, which breathe through a thin, louvered air cleaner, funnel life in to a clean Winters intake. At the sides of that intake, cast iron heads hang finned Corvette valve covers over fully restored exhaust manifolds. Behind those manifolds, a chrome-capped ignition system shoots fire through stainless sleeved plug wires. And in front of those wires, a beefy radiator circulates coolant through reproduction GM hoses and tight squeeze clamps. In addition to its killer powerplant, this Corvette offers a thoroughly detailed engine bay that's complete with stainless fluid lines, an AC fuel bowl, a Delco-Remy generator and a reproduction Delco battery. And the car's first rate aesthetics, which mix smooth, Satin Black framing with a bright, Chevy Orange core, create great texture and excellent contrast. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Flip this C1 upside down and you'll find a sturdy, road-ready X-frame that's bolted to bare, correctly over-sprayed floor tubs. Behind the motor, a '61 Borg Warner T10 4-speed twists torque through stout, 3.70 gears. At the ends of the floors, a fully restored double A-arm front and solid axle rear suspension has been completely returned to factory specifications. At the corners of the car, standard drum brakes complement good handling characteristics with solid and confident stops. Exhaust is managed by big, true-dual pipes, which run from a U-shaped crossover to factory replacement mufflers. Power meets the pavement through standard steelies, which spin fresh 6.70-15 BF Goodrich Silvertown whitewalls around traditional stainless covers. And everything, from this Corvette's manual steering rack to its leak-free fuel tank, is fully sorted and ready to log miles. INTERIOR In keeping with this roadster's high performance theme, interior outfitting remains minimal. High quality restoration pieces provide long-term durability without sacrificing good looks. The car's textured seats, which are equipped with simple lap belts, still have years of life left in them. There's stain-free carpet that still features a clean, fibrous sheen.
