They say that a picture is worth a thousand works and I do have several nice photos of my 1948 Chrysler Town and Country 4 door sedan. But I am also going to give you the thousand (or more) words, I hope you enjoy them! HISTORY OF THE CAR OWNERS This 1948 Chrysler Town and Country sedan was purchased new on June 15, 1948 by Henry W. Breyer, Jr. who was the grandson of William A. Breyer, the man who founded the Breyer Ice Cream Company. Henry was then living on an 80 acre estate on Old York Road in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania (Cheltenham Township). His mansion, which was built by his father, Henry W. Breyer, Sr., in 1915, is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Breyer Jr. used the woodie sedan to transport his family, guests and company’s executives as well as serving to commute him to his office and factory in Philadelphia. Judging by the condition of the original carpets, the rear floor and the driver’s side front were quite worn but the passenger side front was still in good condition. That would indicate that Breyer had a chauffeur to do the driving and that he and his guests would ride in the back seat. In 1956, Breyer sold his mansion and it eventually became the offices of Cheltenham Township. The Chrysler was put into storage where it sat forgotten and unused for some 24 years. The last license plate on the car (and is still on the car) was of a 1956 vintage and the PA inspection sticker was also of that year. One of the last oil changes done was with Invader Motor Oil and the mileage at that time was 69,792. That oil change was done in Plumsteadville, PA according to the sticker which is still on the door post. Since the current mileage of the car is 74,400, the car has had less than 5,000 miles added since that oil change which was probably done in about 1955. In July of 1980, the car was purchased by Donald E. Rook of Pleasant Valley, PA and was added to his collection of over 100 cars, mainly Chryslers and Packards. He was well known locally for all the old cars he owned, the better ones kept in sheds and barns but others just sitting out in his fields. At some point after that purchase, he moved from PA to Mena, Arkansas where he had a large parcel of land and a bed and breakfast business. He moved his more special cars to his new location and stored them in sheds on his new property. The Breyer’s Town and Country sedan was one of the cars to make the trip. In May of 2010, Rook decided to sell off a portion of his collection and the T & C sedan was purchased by Dave and Shari Flick of Los Gatos, California. In August of the same year, Rook accidentally drowned in his own pond due to a boating mishap. Dave and Shari Flick got right to work on their new acquisition, giving it a major mechanical overhaul with most of the work being done by a local car restorer, Juan Villarreal. On July 25, 2011 the Flicks proudly showed their car at a National Woodie Club meet in Santa Cruz, CA. They were then debating how they would do the cosmetic restoration of the car, would they leave it as is or pursue a major painting and upholstery restoration. Sadly, Dave died in October of that year and the car needed to be sold. I have always been a Mopar guy and have recently been interested in owning a woodie car at least one time in my life. That meant that I would look for a Chrysler Town and Country car of the 1940s and since I had noticed that the AACA had determined that the Chrysler T & Cs of the 1940s were now defined as classic cars, it would be my choice of a woodie to find one. I spotted the Flick’s car on an Ebay auction in the spring of 2014, was attracted to its originality and its history and thought it would be the kind of car that I could do some work on myself to bring it back to its 1956 appearance which is when it went into a long hibernation. After some negotiation, I purchased the car sight unseen and had it shipped from San Jose, CA to Chicago, Illinois, both car buying things that I never had done before. When it arrived by car transport, I got to see it in person and it was pretty much as I had imagined it would be. Since most of the mechanical work was already done, my goal was to make it more cosmetically pleasing and to bring it up to at least a condition #3 car but try to keep as much of its originality as possible during the process. My fun and personal challenge was to rescue this classic car from its years of neglect and to make it into a decent drivable car for someone to enjoy for many years to come. I am not a professional restorer and make no pretense that this car is now perfect in every way, but I have accomplished my personal goal of rescuing this original Henry W. Breyer 1948 Town and Country sedan and bringing it back to a good looking 20 footer! WORK DONE ON THE CAR During the Breyer ownership, I believe the car was normally maintained, which in the case of woodie vehicles, meant an annual (or semi-annual) coat of varnish in addition to the usual mechanical maintenance. It was kept in the Breyer estate’s garage (which is also on the National Register) and was probably used daily for Breyer’s commute. After the estate was sold, the car was put into storage, place unknown, for the next 24 years. I don’t believe anything was done to it during the storage years and it still has the last license plate it had during its regular use. It also had a small shard of its last vehicle inspection sticker on its windshield, I do still have that shard but have replaced it on the windshield with a NOS one of the exact same kind. And as previously mentioned, it still has an oil change sticker (no date) indicating a mileage of 69,792. And in 1972, some enterprising mice set up housekeeping in the rear seat cushion of the car, I determined this by piecing together some shards of PA newspapers they used for their comfort. During the 30 years of Rook ownership, I don’t believe much was done to the car, I think it was basically just stored and was not driven. The storage was probably done in sheds which were not very weather tight as there ended up being a lot of surface rust all over the car by the time of the May 2010 auction. If you are really interested in my story, do an on-line search for “Rook Barn Find Auction” and you will see a picture of this car on a flat bed trailer, apparently ready to go to its new owner. You will see a lot of said surface rust but note that the top of the car has been repainted its original color, Catalina Tan. I suspect that Rook may have had more plans for the car but did not have the time to go further with the work. During the 4 years of Flick ownership, the car underwent a thorough mechanical restoration including the rebuilding of the engine and transmission and a complete going over of the cooling, fuel and braking systems. Inner fender panels and front end undercarriage were powder coated in black. Many new parts were added including a set of radial tires in the original wide whitewall design. I do have all of the paperwork on all these repairs that pretty much show exactly what was done. The car was very drivable by July 25, 2011 when the Flicks took it to a National Woodie Club meet which was called “Woodies on the Wharf” and held in Santa Cruz, CA. Again, if you are interested, do another on-line search for “Member Spotlight – Town and Country Woodies with Dave and Shari Flick”. If you scroll down the article a bit you will see pictures of them with the car and a bit of their story of ownership. After Dave’s untimely death just a few months later, the car was kept at the shop where the restoration took place and it eventually was offered for sale on an Ebay auction. As mentioned before, my goal of work needed for the Breyer T & C was to bring it up to a condition #3 vehicle, in old car lingo that would be a 20 footer. I am calling much of my efforts to be refurbishing rather than restoring. Rook had already repainted the top and someone had sanded off all the surface rust so my leaving what was left of the original paint did not seem very practical to me. My painting experience was very limited but I did want to try painting enamel on a car at least once in my life and this was my chance. I did remove and separately paint all metal components of the car except for the front fenders. I only touched up the front door jambs so that they still have some of their original paint. My efforts were pretty good in most places, not as good in others. I still have about a half-gallon of paint so any of my work could be redone by a future owner. In my opinion, the upholstery was not savable, the leather was in shreds and the cloth torn with stuffing poking out. So I had the seats reupholstered with the correct Bedford Cord fabric and the tan leather accents. I also installed a new rear carpet and front side kick panels as the originals were beyond saving. The total rest of the interior was left original, cleaned up or repaired as necessary. The door panels, which are all wood, were given a couple of coats of polyurethane varnish and original flip-flop handles were found and added. The exterior chrome pieces were rusty in places and pitted in others and some had lost their original shine. A few chrome trim pieces had been changed before I got the car and a few more NOS or good used pieces were included with the sale. So now the front bumper guards, 3 of the front fender moldings, the hood ornament , taillight bezels, license light body/handle and brake light bezel have been replaced with nicer used or NOS parts. The bumpers themselves have been cleaned up but could still use plating if desired. The trunk compartment was cleaned up, is still all original and I added a spare wheel and tire and a bumper jack, all of which were missing when I bought the car. The bumper jack may not be the original one but I have tried it and it works with this car. I detailed the engine compartment a bit along with painting the firewall. I re-undercoated the fenders, the hood and the splash aprons. All of the exterior wood was sanded down (not bleached) and given 3 coats of spar varnish A contact material called Di-Noc was added to the panels, I will describe this a little later in my story. Although most of the mechanical work was done before I bought the car, it still needed some further repairs. I had the front end inspected and repaired and the wheels aligned. I had new shackles and bushings added to the rear leaf springs. I had the speedometer and the radio repaired. I had the radiator reworked and a low pressure cap installed to help with heating issues. I added a new 6 volt electric fan which I put on a switch for extra cooling power if needed. And just recently I corrected some starting when hot issues by adding a new coil. The only thing I have not done at this time is to repair the clock, usually this involves a good cleaning of the mechanism and it will again be functional. Otherwise, it is my belief that all mechanical components of this car are in good working condition. HISTORY OF 1946-1948 TOWN AND COUNTRY CARS Town and Country Chryslers in their true woodie form were built from 1941 to 1948. After that the wood tended to be applied to steel bodied cars rather than being an integral part of the body. The post-war 1946-1948 Town and Country cars are recognized by the AACA as being true classic cars. The main body styles of the post-war years were the convertible and the 4 door sedan. The convertible was built on a Chrysler New Yorker chassis and had an 8 cylinder engine. The sedan was built on a Chrysler Windsor chassis and had a 6 cylinder engine. The Chrysler promotion of the car said that the Town and Country had the “Grace and elegance of a yacht”. Currently, the T and Cs are known as land yachts. There were some minor differences over the 1946-1948 post-war run, notably that the roof racks on the sedan went from chrome in ’46-’47 to wood in 1948. The insert Ply-metal panels were veneered in mahogany in ’46-’47 but in late 1947, as a cost and efficiency measure, the panels were covered with Di-Noc which was sort of a contact type material. In the case of the Breyer sedan, the doors still had the veneering while the trunk had the Di-Noc. The veneer on the front door upper panels was in very poor condition so my decision was to add a current style of Di-Noc to all the panels, I even applied it over the existing veneer panels after repairing the upper front door panels. By the numbers, Chrysler produced 979 Town and Country cars in 1941 and 1,000 in 1942. In 1946, 1,936 convertibles and 224 sedans were produced. In 1947, 3,316 convertibles and 2,651 sedans were produced. In 1948, 3,303 convertibles and 1,176 sedans were produced. So overall, only 8,375 convertibles and 4,051 sedans were produced from 1946 through early 1949 when Chrysler redesigned all their models and called them the second series of that model year. It is unknown exactly how many of these classic T & Cs exist today, in many cases the wood rotted and the cars were junked years ago. But every once in a while, one turns up as a barn find and may be in fairly decent condition. I hope you enjoyed my “1,000 words” even if you have no interest in purchasing this car. I am offering it on a buy-it-now listing for $70,000, it is a good #3 condition car and the "OId Cars Price Guide" shows $67,500 for a condition #3 car, it is also known as a "20 footer". I did clean and touch up some rusty chrome spots. I did get the hang of painting but should have done a little better job of filling tiny surface rust pocks. After installing the Di-noc, some of it bubbled or pulled up on the edges. I glued it back on but a couple of the repairs are visible. Like I said, from 20 feet it does look very nice, but I also judge it to be presentable even from closer up. If you have any further questions on the Breyer car that I am selling, send me an Ebay email or give me a call at 773-746-6363. I am always glad to hear from fellow Mopar enthusiasts! PS Go withs include a reproduction owner's manual for a C-38 Chrysler, a 1956 (90th anniversary) Breyer promotional ash tray, a 1966 (100th anniversary) Breyer promotional Ice Cream box, 2 child's toys found down in the bumper guards (I believe them to be from the Breyer's children) and a recently obtained bumper jack which is not an original one. I also have a bunch of paper work on repairs that have been done by the Flicks and more recently, by me. This car is located in Chicago near O'Hare Airport. You are welcome to see it any time you wish, just give me a call or send me an email. Tom I am now accepting offers but they must be reasonable ones as I know exactly what I have invested in this car. I will answer any questions and/or offers to the best of my ability.

Owned by Steve Hall of Novato, CA through the early 70s, it would resurface in 1988 when Cliff Gilbar brokered a deal for Ken Gimelli of Santa Cruz, CA on the car. It was located in Los Angles and belonged to a gypsy couple that read fortunes for a living. Ken, a long time Cadillac collector, would pick the car up, and discover how all-original the Eldorado was. In its original blue paint with white interior, it appeared the car had never been touched. Around 1991 Gimelli would sell the car to Steve Marini, owner of GM Sports in Stockton, CA. An Eldorado aficionado, Marini drove the car often, and became so enamored of this particular example decided to do a complete, body off, nut-and-bolt restoration. At the cost of over $150k the Eldorado was rebuilt from the ground up using as many original parts as possible, and substandard items were replaced with NOS parts from Marini's collection. The result was a show-winning car that made multiple appearances at numerous concours and car shows across Northern California. In late 2007 it was time for the Eldorado to move on to a new owner. Although the new owner loved the vehicle, he did not love the original Azure Blue paint and interior. In early 2008 he took the Cadillac to Jerry Hjeltness of Hjeltness Restoration in Escondido, CA. Having done an award winning Mercedes-Benz 300SL restoration for him in the past he knew that Jerry was the man for the job. Hjeltness disassembled the car and took the body down to the metal. Over the next 6 months they would repaint the car in its stunning Norman Grey paint, recover the interior in a vast expanse of red leather, and recondition all of the bright work. They approached the project as the do all of their Pebble Beach winning automobiles, and the result is a cosmetically stunning car that wouldn't flinch being called a work of art. Always pursuing to perfect the Eldorado, in 2010 the owner took the car to another Pebble Beach winner, Butch Dennison in Puyallup, WA. This time the mechanicals were the focus. There at Dennison International Motorsports the car was treated to a complete mechanical refit of the driveline, brakes, and suspension. Now at Canepa the Eldorado has been fully inspected and serviced. As with all of our cars the Eldorado has been treated to a complete concours level detail, and is ready once again to grace any show lawn, and win. About the 1953 Cadillac Eldorado The Eldorado has a limited-production special convertible body that is quite unlike the standard 1953 Cadillac Convertible Coupe, Style 53-6267. The four fenders, trunk lid and floor pan are the only major body panels that are shared intact with the standard convertible; the hood, cowl, doors and body shell are coach-built by the craftsmen of Fisher/Fleetwood. The new, for 1953, wrap-around windshield was a precursor of a major forthcoming styling change to the entire General Motors line of automobiles. The long, low appearance of the Eldorado is not an illusion created by the low-cut doors and belt line. The 5 5/8 inch road clearance of the Eldorado is one inch less than the standard convertible, and the overall height is three inches less, at 58 1/8 inches. Numerous subtle features including a padded dashboard, unique interior upholstery treatments and a completely disappearing convertible top, distinguish the Eldorado from the standard convertible. The substantial amount of skilled labor and individual bodywork involved in building each Eldorado was expensive. It is likely that Cadillac lost money on every 1953 Eldorado, but made up for it in publicity, prestige and public interest. It certainly did not hurt their reputation to have the new President of the United States, Dwight D. Eisenhower, parade through the streets in a new white 1953 Eldorado during his inaugural parade. LExterior ColorGreenInterior ColorGreenTitleClearOffered for Sale by the California Automobile Museum Nicely restored 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Two Door Hardtop We Offer Financing Please inquire before bidding This is a very original example of the iconic 1957 Chevy that looks like it just arrived from the fifties in a time warp, perfect from it’s two tone paint right down to the wide white sidewalls. Slide behind the wheel in that beautiful interior and you almost expect to find the new car smell. This beautiful Chevy is a two door hard top with a 283 and automatic transmission. It’s a basic car without power steering or power brakes. This Chevy was restored in 1986 and has been in storage since then. Restoration included body work and paint, upholstery, rechromed bumpers with the engine and transmission rebuilt. Brake cylinders and tires were replaced at the last service and the car has been lightly driven for the past few years. The car runs and drives nicely, but it idles a bit rough so the carb may need some attention. This old Chevy is complete except for the original radio. The owner also wanted to give some history and background to her car, below is a letter in her own words: Dear prospective new owner: This is a brief history (and love letter), and an answer to why this wonderful vehicle is being sold. My beloved aunt gifted the 57 Chevy to me on my 17th birthday. The car had been bequeathed to her from a childhood boyfriend who became a life-long friend. They maintained a bi-coastal friendship until his untimely death. My aunt’s husband provided my initial driving instructions for the Chevy. Slow into the curve and accelerate out as we motored through the Bay Area hills. I must note that, to this day, I still cannot parallel park. At the conclusion of my two-week introduction to this mysterious, throaty and powerful vehicle, my aunt gave me the keys. For most of my life this Chevy has been my transport to school, college, jobs (a “company car”) and running out for shopping. My beloved Chevy has enjoyed the challenges of travelling to Yosemite, parking at the beaches in Santa Cruz and the back and forth of I5 and Highway 99. Her favorite travel destination was the Napa/Sonoma wine country. Upon leaving a winery I would often come upon folks who once owned a Chevy, lost a Chevy, enjoyed the drive-in movies in a Chevy, went on a prom date in a Chevy, or travelled on their honeymoon in a Chevy. This car was admired and photographed by many people recapturing their memories. As you can see from above, my Chevy was never a trophy car, although guys I dated always wanted to drive my car. This was a working car owned by a woman who appreciated its trunk capacity that could handle the numerous boxes of high heels I packed when travelling. When asked about the car’s specifications, I just knew that it was a two-door V8—powerful and gorgeous. Transitions occur. I thought the Chevy would always be mine until my job began to require increasingly lengthy road trips that the Chevy found challenging, and gas prices started escalating. Power brakes and steering began to look attractive. But it was the company I worked for (which provided a car allowance) that finally said, “get a modern car”, and so I did. That car was a Lexus SC430 coupe, which became my new dream car. It didn’t replace the Chevy—it was just radically different. For example, its small trunk couldn’t haul nearly the number of shoes that the Chevy could. The Lexus was recently totaled in a stupid rear-end accident, and sadly my 57 Chevy cannot transition back into the every day car she originally was. I always thought she was a keeper, but sadly I must now let her go. I hope that the new owner will experience the same enjoyment I did over the past 49 years. Sincerely, LillieThis vehicle is being sold as is, where is with no warranty, expressed written or implied. Are you tired of depreciation or making repairs on your cars all the time? How many times have you heard "What is a cheap car that is reliable?" There is a solution.Mercedes diesels are not cheap but can be inexpensive, if you have the money to keep one in good shape. I've driven over 42 years at an average car cost of 15 cents per mile, (price + repairs - resale.) I've owned a dozen MB diesels. Back then they were sluggish, hard to start, slow to climb hills, with poor heaters and AC. It changed with the 87 300D, the fastest MB diesel until 1998. This one is a rather rare, W124 chassis, European 300D non-turbo diesel (1986 preceding the Turbo American export for 87.) It was originally brought home to Santa Cruz with a vacation package to Germany. This car is one of two diesel daily drivers I have, reliable, comfortable, look classy and distinctive, but not show cars by any means. As each one is likely to out last my life time, I am reluctantly letting one go. It gets 30 mpg consistently. The engine has never been touched, nor would it need service any time soon. It's ready to make a pleasant cross country trip any time.Car has been lowered 2" with the popular AMG kit and fender flares. Power windows and locks. Electric mirror. Electric Sunroof. Stereo radio with CD. It is also equipped with emergency lights and siren. It slips under the wind. On I-5, if I am not careful I would be drifting over 90 mph as I am used to my 190D. Silver Star Motors had done all the service, rebuilding the under carriage, brakes, struts, bushings, front and rear end components, differential and motor mounts, etc. The interior comfort accessories are all working as they should, with a new AC compressor, blower and regulator, climate control unit, and in the dash vacuum elements for the flappers and vents. Nice burl wood, real leather and sheep skins remind you every day: "Life is Good!" ..... no need to stress about your car. This is not a wholesale car which you would expect to feed money to. Historical receipts since day one are available in a folder for inspections. If you already know about this car, how hard it is to find a good one with no deferred maintenance, it is made for only one year, parts are available on Ebay, and this is what you've been looking for, you can't go wrong. As you may know, most of these were sold back east resulting in rust. And if you wonder why I am selling this one, you can have my other one, a 87 300D Turbo. It has a 2-stage paint job. I'd need 13k for that.A 1987 Mercedes in Hemmings price guide is 14k average with a high at 28k, .... for what it's worth.Asking price is below my investment, some charged off for use-sage. Check out uShip and name your bid for transport. It is negotiable if you offer half in cash with an interesting local trade. Please send all details of what you have in your first reply. Serious only please. Subject to local sale.

Vehicle Review Vehicle Information ?Overview ?Introduction ?Walkaround ?Driving Impression ?Interior ?Summary Unique style, unusual value. The Kia Sportage is renowned for being an affordable compact SUV. It offers a comprehensive set of safety features, excellent versatility, and tremendous value. The Sportage is a five passenger vehicle that is offered in front-wheel (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). A 182-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine is standard on the LX and EX trims and a 260-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is standard on the SX trim. Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Standard safety features include four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes, electronic stability program, traction control, and six airbags, including side curtain airbags. Some of the available features include: power heated leather seats, power folding mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels, dual zone automatic climate control, a cooled glovebox, and a rear camera. For 2014, the Kia Sportage is refreshed inside and out, the base trim has been dropped and some repackaging has been done. Source: Model Reviews Introduction Kia Sportage is a sporty crossover utility vehicle, conveniently sized and well-executed in almost every way. The Sportage coaxes both ample performance and decent fuel economy from a choice of two moderately sized engines. Unlike some competitors in this class, which tend to look alike, the Kia Sportage glories in its distinctive appearance, helped by a high beltline, pronounced rear pillars and prominent wheel flares. For 2014, Kia has enhanced its standard 2.4-liter engine, adding direct injection and boosting horsepower from 176 to 182 horsepower. Wheels and the grille have been redesigned, and high-intensity-discharge headlights have been added to the options. LED rear taillights are installed, and EX models get new fog lamps. Newly available features for 2014 also include Infinity premium audio, rear ventilation, a ventilated passenger seat, and UVO eServices that work with a free smartphone app. All 2014 Sportage models have a tilt/telescopic steering wheel. A new navigation system is available, compatible with UVO eServices. On the dashboard is a new 4.2-inch LCD screen. All 2014 Sportage models have high-performance dampers. Kia has dropped the previous base model and the manual transmission; all 2014 Sportage models have a 6-speed automatic transmission. Three trim levels and two engines are offered. The 2014 Kia Sportage LX and EX with the standard 182-horsepower 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine earn an EPA City/Highway rating of 19/26 mpg with all-wheel drive (AWD). Front-wheel-drive 2014 Sportage models achieve an even better 21/28 mpg rating. Aiding fuel efficiency is a relatively lean curb weight, though Sportage isn't quite as light as it used to be. The Sportage SX, with its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, benefits from 260 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. The 2014 Sportage SX gets a respectable 20/26 mpg City/Highway rating from the EPA with front-wheel drive, and 19/24 mpg with AWD. We've found that the standard 2.4-liter engine delivers its power smoothly and mostly in a linear manner, with only an occasional, slight surge after an upshift in the automatic as the electronics adjust to the changing load. Those gear changes are clean, if not remarkably sharp, with ready downshifts for overtaking or merging. The steering feels heavier in the AWD version but is reasonably responsive in both, with good directional stability. All-wheel drive comes with a limited locking feature for low-speed use in adverse conditions. Power folding mirrors and sunvisor extenders come on all 2014 Sportage models. LED accent lights are mounted on Sportage LX and Sportage EX models; the 2014 Sportage SX has LED daytime running lights. Sportage styling looks fresh and sharp from every angle. Character lines are crisp but subdued, contrasting nicely with the overall rounded look. Blackened lower trim panels imply good ground clearance, while keeping the tires visually in proper proportion to the body. We found the interior accommodations comfortable, though the Sportage lacks the interior roominess of its competitors: mainly, the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Subaru Forester. The front seats offer good support. Leather-trimmed seats and front-seat ventilation are available. An AM/FM/CD six-speaker stereo with SiriusXM radio and USB/auxiliary input jacks comes standard, with Infinity premium audio included on EX and SX models. An optional navigation system with a touch screen includes Sirius Traffic. A rearview camera is available, which is an excellent safety feature. Sportage EX and SX get dual-zone, automatic climate control. Cargo capacity is a generous 26.1 cubic feet behind the second seat, but a less-impressive 54.6 cubic feet with the second seat folded. Translation: It's handier for hauling people than large amounts of cargo. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround Kia Sportage styling is unconstrained by cliche or convention. From nose to tail, from footprint to luggage rack, Sportage shares almost nothing outside of its overall proportions with more conventionally styled crossovers and mini-SUVs. The upper grille is a bigger, bolder rendering of the Kia-signature tiger nose. Underlined by a free-flowing, vaguely bow-tie-shaped black insert in the bumper fascia, the overall effect is an I'm-about-to-eat-you grin. Compact headlight housings with slightly protruding clear lenses curve around the front fenders, adding their own contribution to that menacing smile. Fog lights on the Sportage EX and SX nestle comfortably at the outboard ends of the bow tie, assuming their vertical-oblong shape from the surrounding trim. The SX sports its own, subtly different grille, which replaces the delicate horizontal-over-vertical mesh of lesser models with a more rugged chain-link texture; and the bright-chrome surround with chrome of a darker tone. The concave hood flows smoothly back into the decently raked windshield. Viewed head on, it's a more planted look than you'd expect from a crossover, a direct consequence of a wide, 63.5-inch track (distance between the tires side to side), and a roofline that peaks just 64.4 inches from the road. Highlighting the side aspect is a beltline (generally, the bottom edge of the side windows) that arcs dramatically from the trailing corner of the headlights to the leading edge of the taillights, giving the Sportage a wedgy but still soft profile. The high beltline reduces the real estate available for side windows, making for almost a chopped look, like street rods of the mid-20th century. A creased depression in the lower portion of the door panels breaks up the expanse of sheet metal, thereby lowering the impression of mass. The flat black trim from the front lower fascia continues around the sides, outlining the wheelwells, which the tires fill quite nicely, and underscoring the rocker panels. Most of the styling lines on the backside pinch inward toward the trademark oval parked in the middle of the liftgate. The backlight is about the same proportion to the bodywork as the side windows; that is, smallish. Taillights narrow as they look toward the centerline. Turn indicators are slotted into the rear bumper, an interesting location that at first blush appears to favor a closely following driver at the expense of one two or three cars back. A creased lip marks the bottom edge of the liftgate, above a license plate space that occupies the middle of the rear bumper where a continuation of the flat black trim panel completes its circumnavigation of the Sportage's lower body. Dual exhausts with bold oval openings distinguish the SX. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression We found the Kia Sportage enjoyable to drive. All-wheel-drive models are more pleasing than the front-wheel-drive Sportage, but neither is boring or outside of its element in the overwhelming majority of circumstances and situations. Kia has done a commendable job of milking maximum power out of the 2.4-liter four-banger, while delivering decent fuel economy. Measured again against the Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4, even before adoption of direct injection, the Kia Sportage 2.4-liter delivered horsepower and torque numbers that were just about dead-on average for the group. Now, with the 2014 increase of 6 horsepower, it reaches a tad higher yet. Only a few years ago, this class offered a few V6 options, but those have disappeared with rising gas prices and tighter fuel economy regulations. Now the only optional engines in this group are the turbo-fours offered by Subaru and Kia. The Kia 2.0-liter turbo is by far the stronger of the two, with 260 hp for the Sportage vs. 224 hp for the Forester, and 269 pound-feet of torque for the Kia vs. 226 for the Subaru. Kia's 6-speed automatic handles gear changes reasonably smoothly, including downshifts when necessary for passing and merging, whether in regular auto or Sportmatic mode. The brakes in the Sportage did their job with confidence and no noticeable fade, after several miles of reasonably rapid motoring on twisting two-lane roads winding through the Santa Cruz Mountains south of San Francisco. Response to steering inputs was decent on our Sportage EX wearing the low profile tires and 18-inch wheels, with understeer more easily induced with front-wheel drive than with all-wheel drive. The same held for steering effort, with the AWD feeding back a heavier, more solid feel. Given the relatively high center of gravity, body roll (lean) in tight corners was modest. Directional stability, the tendency for the car to hold its line on straight stretches and through corners, raised no concerns, requiring corrections only in response to pavement irregularities. Suspension damping was decent over bumpy pavement, the worst of which produced something more like head nodding than head bobbing. For mud or snow, the AWD system offers a Lock Mode that sends equal amounts of torque to each wheel, at up to a maximum of 25 mph. The test models we drove were early production models, i.e., not quite ready for prime time, so the minor squeaks and rattles emanating from somewhere in the neighborhood of the dash are likely not indicative of Sportages in dealers showrooms. The tire noise from the stock Hankook tires, though, could be. That would be unfortunate, as otherwise, the ride and road holding were quite respectable. Comparing overall handling, the Subaru Forester feels about the same in terms of road-holding and overall stability (very good, in other words), with its lower center of gravity making up for a track (distance between the wheels side to side) that's more than three inches narrower. The CR-V and RAV4 don't fare as well, tipping the scales on average 100-200 pounds heavier than the Sportage (depending on equipment), and riding on a track that's narrower than the Sportage's by about two inches. The net effect is to allow more body roll in turns and to generate head gyrations that are closer to bobbing than to nodding over rough pavement. Basic ride quality is comparable for the cars in this class. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The Kia Sportage interior displays as much bold imagination as the exterior, while remaining ergonomically friendly and eye-pleasing. Nothing too fancy or gimmicky, just well crafted and eminently usable. Essential instrumentation is easy-to-read analog, with a large, circular dial for the speedometer bracketed by a half-circle tachometer and inversely stacked temperature and fuel level gauges. A small, rectangular LED display inset into the speedometer face shows gear selection and trip data. The center stack is properly organized, placing the audio/navigation interface at the top, the climate control panel midlevel and power points and USB/auxiliary inputs tucked into the lower section, which also contains a smallish storage bin. Controls for the available seat heaters fit in side notches forward of the shift gate. Climate and audio/touch-screen navigation controls are logically arrayed, finger-friendly knobs, coupled with virtual and real buttons. A satin-finish, smoothly sculpted panel that hosts the instruments and the audio/nav panel seems to pop out of the pod-like dash, itself topped in industry-standard, glare-suppressing, grainy-textured (but not cheap looking) plastic material. The shift lever perches on the forward end of the center console, within which sit two cup holders (which need inserts for anything smaller than a Big Gulp) between curiously placed grab handles. The storage bin beneath the center armrest holds the charger for the transmitter for the available keyless start/stop system. It's a less-than-ideal, and likely more easily forgotten, location compared with other systems' placement in the lower dash on either side of the steering column. Visibility to the front is good, aided by a high seating position and the sloping hood. To the side and the rear, the smallish side and rear windows and an expansive C-pillar (the rearmost support between the body and the roof) make working heavy traffic a chore. On the bright side, the two-pane panoramic sunroof optional on the EX and SX can give rear-seat passengers some satisfying views of the sky or urban landscape overhead. Front seats are comfortable, with sufficient thigh support and adequate bolstering. The front-seat passenger is shortchanged when it comes to seat adjustability, relegated to a four-way manual setup. The perforations in the optional leather in the Sportage we tested kept the seats from being clammy or overly slick. Measured against the expected competition, led by the Honda CR-V, the Subaru Forester and the Toyota RAV4, people-room in the Sportage is disappointing. In most interior dimensions the Kia is the smallest of the group, albeit in most cases by only an inch, give or take. The Forester, however, tops the Sportage in front-seat headroom by more than two inches, and in rear-seat headroom by almost the same amount. And the CR-V, which leads the group in rear-seat hiproom, betters the Sportage by a full four inches. The Sportage's cargo space also trails all of the competition, surrendering a significant 12 cubic feet with the rear seat up and 19 cubic feet with the rear seat down to the class-leading Toyota. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary The Kia Sportage is a compact sport-utility that's refined, comfortable, well-developed and sharp-looking. The standard engine delivers respectable power and more than respectable fuel economy, at a competitive price. The Giulia Sprint GT Veloce was very similar to the original Giulia Sprint GT. It featured minor modifications to the engine, providing 3 bhp more power, but significantly improved torque. Early Giulia Sprint GT Veloces featured the same Dunlop disc brake system as the Giulia Sprint GT. Later cars replaced this with the ATE disc brakes as pioneered on the GT 1300 Junior in 1966. The ATE brakes featured an interesting and more effective handbrake system on the rear brakes, which incorporated drum brakes inside the disc castings. A total of 14,240 Giulia Sprint GT Veloces were made before production finished. We received this 1967 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT Veloce in from its third California owner who happens to be an excellent client of ours. Our client purchased this vehicle from its second owner in the early 2000's. The 1600cc engine was rebuilt in 2008 by Phil's Foreign Car Service right here in Santa Cruz and only has 18,717 on the build. Some modifications were done to the body of this Alfa to make it a "period correct" vehicle. Some of these modifications include a redesigned gasoline cap to fit modern day fuel nozzles, upgraded Alfa Romeo Wheels built with a stronger material, and seating from a 1969 Alfa Romeo. This rust free Alfa has been meticulously cared for and it shows beautifully! It is finished in Alfa Rosso Red over Black Vinyl seating. The body of this Alfa is in immaculate condition with all of the lines evenly spaced out. This is a rare opportunity to own a beautiful collectors car and it is sure not to last. Feel free to call us with any questions you may have on this vehicle or to schedule a time to view this Alfa. We look forward to hearing from you!
