For sale in our Fort Lauderdale showroom is a cool and custom 1971 Scout 800 B. This is a full frame off, five year build, restoration. Every single piece of metal on this Scout has been removed, sand blasted, primer coated and painted. A POR 15 Hard Nose two-part dark blue paint was used to paint the: Frame, arms for the 3 link on the front, shock tubes, and the underbelly. While it was stripped down, all the bolts were replaced with grade 8 bolts and body mounts replaced as well. The exterior body has been professionally painted with PPG Global custom light aqua blue with a touch of green. With multiple coats of clear, this color scheme is glossy and screams \"Take me to the beach!\" The removable top has a nice glossy white finish, to make the rest of the car pop! All the rubber seals (doors, windows, body etc) on the Scout have been replaced. The owner spared at no expense, restoring this car with custom and rare parts. Per example, the side mirrors are a very rare, hard to find set of Yankee \"bullet\" mirrors. The aluminum grill and head light bezels were buffed and polished to a nice finish, which makes passer-bys double take and gawk. The bed has been reinforced with stronger, thicker metal, assuring this ride is just as tough as it is beautiful. New Scout emblems were used for the finishing touches. The front bumper was replaced with a beautiful, chrome Smittybuilt dual tube front bumper. The rear bumper was replaced with a modern chrome plated bumper. With all of this show, one could only hope it has an equal amount of GO! Rest assured, that it does! To power this International Scout for sale is a custom Chevy block 383 stroker with less than 400 miles. This motor has been professionally honed and bored .030 over with forged 4340 internals, 6 inch full stroke rods, Comp Cam extreme 4x4 camshaft, AFR heads, Ultra pro Magnum rocker arms, custom Holley carburetor with Edelbrock Air Gap, MSD ignition with 6AL2 digital and MSD cables, and high output mechanical fuel pump. To keep the motor oil flowing is a Moroso racing oil pump with a Moroso Deep low profile off road racing oil pan. The pulley system is a March Performance polished aluminum pulley kit. This small block Chevy would be equally as happy behind any Chevy muscle car, as it would this big and bad 71\' Scout for sale! Backed behind this peppy engine, is a TH 350 automatic transmission, which was completely rebuilt and shifts through a K%26N slap shifter. With the Trans Go shift kit, large volume K and N aluminum transmission oil pan, and a exterior oil cooler to keep fluids cool, this transmission was built to last! The NP 205 transfer case was completely rebuilt to be bullet-proof, with new seal and components. Beefed up out-puts connecting custom drive shaft. To add some grip and stop to all of this go, New Warn locking Hubs were added, as well as new performance rotors on the front along with Hawk pads. New Calipers, new brake booster, and new break lines were added, to give this Scout, the complete once-over. The vehicle handles the beefy Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ tires with ease, via a Power Steering Pump off of the Scout II that was sent out, rebuilt and fabricated. A chrome aftermarket steering column and Borgenson joints route around the headers. The steering wheel, made out of walnut wood, is connected to the column and has a nostalgic feel to it. It has a full 3 link suspension on the front, professionally done, with all joints, chromoly steel arms, brackets, etc, from Ballastic Fabrication. It has King Coil Shocks (coil overs) that have 14 inches of travel. The rear is a spring over Pro Comp 3 inch lift kit with Bilstein shocks. The tires are brand new Mickey Thompson MTZ 35 inch 12.5\'s . If you wanted bigger tires on this beast you could easily do it, but any taller and you may have to bring out the step ladder!. The rims are polished aluminum off road wheels. This scout has a 19 gallon aluminum gas tank centered and tucked up under the rear truck bed towards the back of the truck. It is really nice to have for those long distance excursions. With the drivetrain aside, all that\'s left is the interior. This 1971 International Scout for sale was totally rewired, with an 18-circuit painless wiring kit. They run power to an awesome set of Arctic white Auto meter gauges that were placed in a custom dash. They look just right, complimenting the new white vinyl bucket seats and bench! It has a nice and modern Alpine head unit with remote, which still needs to be installed. This Scout for is equipped with various options, including an aftermarket air conditioner and heating system made by NAP air conditioning products, which is tucked under the dash on the passenger side below the glove box. Other options, include: A/C, AM/FM radio, CD, manual convertible top, power brakes, power steering, tilt wheel, seat belts, vinyl interior, and aluminum/alloy wheels wrapped in performance radial tires. 1972 Triumph Stag V8!!! Here is an absolutely gorgeous 1972 Triumph Stag finished in its beautiful BLUE over a brown interior!!! This is a great looking car but it is also a great driving car. This car has only traveled 5k or so miles since restoration and is one of the nicest Stags around. This was a complete and thorough restoration thats costs exceed the asking price of the car without even factoring the cost of the car. This car has NEVER been in an accident. The color combo looks absolutely stunning. This car features a strong Triumph V8 that sounds absolutely incredible. The cylinder heads were recently rebuilt and the typical timing chain issues addressed. This car also has the rare Automatic transmission that has that makes for relaxed motoring. This car is in excellent condition and it truly shows. The paint job is beautiful and the body is laser straight. Everything on the car lines up incredibly well and this is one of the nicest bodies I have ever come across. The interior is like new and in excellent condition and the hard top has a new canvas headliner. This car also comes with a soft top frame. This is an extremely well sorted car with no issues. During the restoration the whole car was disassembled and completely gone through. This car is in great shape cosmetically and mechanically. The Triumph Stag was an excellent car built just a little too late. How many British Sports Cars can you buy for less than 50k dollars and have a V8, automatic transmission, A/C, both soft top and hard top and 4 seats? One drive in this Classic British Sports Car and with the top down on a spring day its easy to understand why these cars are so coveted by those who own them. The paint job was performed on a professionally stripped and rust free body. The paint looks very nice and in excellent condition. As you can see from the photos the body is laser straight. The tops of the dash are free of cracks and everything on the dash is working just as it should. All of the gauges were gone through and everything is working in tip top condition. The engine has virtually no oil leaks and runs really strong. The original Triumph V8 engine has been rebuilt at an enormous expense. The rebuilt transmission shifts beautifully through all the gears and the linkage feels nice and tight. The brakes are strong and stop this car with ease. The suspension was rebuilt at the time or restoration and all of the ball joints and bushing look to be in great shape. The car tracks down the road without wondering and freeway journeys are pleasurable. The desirable automatic transmission also makes for relaxed cruising on the highway. The car overall has a very tight feeling and nothing about the car feels worn out. We fell in love when we first drove it and that love has not diminished over time in spite of other roadsters now vying for our affection. Porsche has been improving on this mid-engine roadster ever since its introduction as a 1997 model. Boxster got a bigger engine and an improved interior for 2000, and Boxster S was introduced that same year with an even more powerful engine. There were significant improvements for 2003, though they are subtle. All of these improvements enhance the quality of the original without affecting the basic attraction. The basic attraction is the Boxster's embodiment of the Porsche 356 Speedster and 550 Spyder. Steering response, clutch take-up, shift tension between gears, all are familiar in a fashion that can only be labeled Porsche. Yet the Boxster has that mid-engine, pivot-at-its-center feel, with none of the tail-heavy temperament that was the hallmark of the rear-engine 911 for so long. The standard Boxster offers plenty of performance, and its engine was revised last year (2003) for quicker acceleration. More important, it sounds much better. Dipping into the throttle at higher revs rewards the driver with a deep, muscular whoosh of air rushing through the intakes that's satisfying, intoxicating. Yet the Boxster engine is quite tractable, great for putting around residential areas or busy parking lots at low rpm. It handles superbly yet rides very nicely, a wonderful balance. We prefer the Boxster S, though. Boxster S retails for $9,000 more than Boxster, but, after all, it's your money. The S does everything better than the Boxster while maintaining what makes the original wonderful. The 3.2-liter engine delivers noticeably more thrust than what's on tap from the 2.7-liter. Though the standard Boxster is no softie, the Boxster S has firmer suspension tuning. Most important, the S is gratifyingly distinguished by its bright red brake calipers, easily seen through the elegant spokes of its specially designed wheels. Gotta have 'em. From a practical standpoint, the Boxster is eminently livable. The top can be raised or lowered at a moment's notice, making top-down motoring an easy decision. It rides smoothly and feels tight and rigid. It's impressively free of the vibration that normally accompanies convertibles. It may not be as comfortable as a new 911, but its seats are supportive and comfortable and it comes with a high level of standard equipment. There are other roadsters that cost less, but the Boxster offers a style and character that is uniquely Porsche and very satisfying. In short, we've never tired of driving the Boxster. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComWalkaround2003 brought significant styling revisions, but they are so subtle that only the keenest observers notice. Overall, the styling tweaks make the Boxster look a bit lower and longer. Yet the most significant cosmetic change is a glass rear window that replaces the clear plastic. A new roof provides for a more rounded and balanced shape. Also new for 2003: Side intake grilles are body-colored, not black. The front air dam is redesigned with larger grilles. The rear valance is lower, with a new grille of its own and larger exhaust tips. The retractable rear spoiler has been reshaped to help maintain Boxster's benchmark 0.31 drag coefficient despite all the larger grilles. Fashionable white/gray turn indicators have replaced yellow ones. The Boxster looks clean, purposeful and pure Porsche. From the front, the Boxster looks similar to the 911. In fact, they share front-end sheet metal though there are differences in the headlamps, bumper fascia and other details. From the rear, the Boxster suggests a blend of Porsche cars from the 1950s, specifically the 356 Speedster and 550 Spyder. While the front of the Boxster is very similar to the 911, their proportions differ from the base of the windshield rearward. Unlike the rear-engine 911, the Boxster engine is mounted ahead of the rear axle rather than over the rear axle or behind it. This mid-engine configuration yields excellent weight distribution. Just as important, it puts most of the car's mass between the front and rear axles, a big asset when making rapid maneuvers; and that's what cars like this are all about. Boxster S is distinguished from the Boxster by its twin exhaust outlets, additional air dam intakes, and wheels. Boxster measures 170 inches overall, significantly longer than the BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz SLK, and Honda S2000. But the Boxster wheelbase is about the same as that of the SLK and S2000, and shorter than that of the Z4. The Porsche is relatively light (2811 pounds for the standard Boxster, 2911 for Boxster S). Boxster is about 100 pounds lighter than the BMW, about 280 pounds lighter than the Mercedes, and about the same weight as the lightweight Honda. Lighter is better for braking, handling, and acceleration performance. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComDriving ImpressionDriving the Porsche Boxster is a joyful experience, whether on a winding mountain road, on a closed racing circuit, or putting around town. Its excellent balance between handling and ride quality makes it easy to live with. One of the things that impressed us while driving a standard 2004 Boxster was its tractability. It motors along with no complaints at very low rpm, making for pleasant cruising around town. Stand on the throttle, and the 2.7-liter engine springs to life, emitting a deep growl (actually more of a rowl) in the upper rev range. The standard Boxster offers plenty of performance for most folks and we'd be completely happy with it, assuming we stayed out of the Boxster S. Revised for 2003 with Porsche's VarioCam technology and a new engine management system, the standard Boxster's 2.7-liter engine puts out 225 horsepower at 6300 rpm and 192 foot-pounds of torque at 4750 rpm. Boxster can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in only 6.4 seconds, according to Porsche, an improvement of 0.2 seconds over the 2002 model. Top speed is estimated to 155 mph in the Boxster. Boxster S gets a bored out version of the same engine, a 3.2-liter that serves up 258 horsepower at 6200 rpm and 229 foot-pounds at 4600 rpm. The added power reduces 0 to 62 mph acceleration times to 5.7 seconds. At a glance, the Boxster engine is classic Porsche with roots that date to Ferdinand Porsche's early work in the 1930s. The horizontally opposed six-cylinder 'boxer' layout offers packaging advantages because the pistons lie flat, which helps keep the center of gravity low. But the Boxster engine represents the state of Porsche art with twin overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, variable cam timing, and liquid cooling. Boxster comes standard with a wonderful 5-speed manual gearbox, while Boxster S comes with a similarly wonderful 6-speed manual. Porsche's 5-speed Tiptronic S automatic ($3,210) is available for both models. The Tiptronic offers its operator the choice of full automatic operation or fingertip push-button self-shifting. It's the best compromise between stick and automatic on the market and works extremely well, but it's also the most expensive. A manual gearbox provides better performance and efficiency and seems more fitting for the Boxster. We prefer it. Porsche brakes are legendary and braking in the Boxster is superb. Oversize vented discs are used on all four wheels plus Porsche's excellent antilock system. Porsche Stability Management ($1,235), or PSM, is a recommended option as this anti-skid system can correct skids can help you stay on the road in an emergency handling maneuver. The Boxster generates impressive grip in the wet, whether braking or cornering. PSM helps greatly in slippery conditions, making it more difficult to make a mistake in this car. You can apply the throttle aggressively in a slippery turn and the stability system will prevent a spin. As much as we like the standard Boxster, the Boxster S has more power and the engine revs more freely. Both engines sound wonderful at high rpm, generating a classic Porsche sound similar to that of the 911 and Porsche race cars. The Boxster S develops 85 percent of its peak torque at just 2000 rpm, providing outstanding throttle response. But the real fun lies in the Boxster's precise response to driver commands. Mid-engine balance, an excellent chassis, and firm suspension tuning add up to a level of agility and stability that seems a cut above the Boxster's key competitors. No wrestling is required to guide this roadster down to the apex of a fast turn. It seems to anticipate the driver's intentions without a hint of hesitation or uncertainty. The ride quality is firm, but that adds to its appeal. The Boxster gets the same shock absorbers as the Boxster S, and the standard 16-inch wheels can be upgraded to lightweight 17- or 18-inch wheels. So, Boxster or Boxster S? It's a much tougher call than it was before the base model was improved and. Dropping the top is as easy as twisting a lever above the rearview mirror and pressing a button. It takes 12 seconds to lower. Raising it is just as easy. It's so quick and easy that we performed this maneuver while waiting for a light to change at an intersection, though we don't condone this behavior. A luxurious headliner enhances the appearance and cuts wind noise when the top is up. When the top is down, you can stretch the optional clear plastic wind deflector ($375) between the upper seatbacks to minimize interior buffeting. Porsche also offers a removable hardtop ($2,345) that includes a rear window defogger; it's useful for harsh winter weather and driving through the mean streets. There's plenty of room for two people in this little roadster and the bucket seats are outstanding. Comfortable and supportive, the standard seats come trimmed with leather. You can spread more cowhide around the interior with the leather interior package ($2,980) or spring for natural leather ($3,520). Also standard is electronic climate control. The system is easy to operate with a big Auto button and an LED that clearly displays the temperature, even in bright sunlight. Like most German cars, turning the fan all the way down is the easiest way to turn it off. Most controls are easy to use. However, the digital audio system, new for 2003, has too many small buttons, requiring too much attention from the driver. As with most small roadsters, the audio sounds tinny, a description that also fits the optional Hi-Fi Sound Package with six speakers, two bass enclosures and six-channel amplifier ($830). An optional Bose High End Sound Package ($1,625) is available, but we have no experience with it. Consistent with virtually every Porsche ever made, the Boxster is all business inside. But the instruments represent something of a departure from Porsche tradition. Three round pods are fused together, with the speedometer on the left, coolant temperature and fuel on the right and a big tachometer dominating the center. The speedometer and tachometer are analog, but there are small digital readouts at the bottom of each pod for the odometer and clock. A digital speedometer provides some useful redundancy. Overall, it's an attractive and effective blend of classic with contemporary. A pair of steel tube hoops, mounted behind the seats and extending above the seatbacks, provides extra protection for drivers unlucky enough to find themselves upside down. Other passive safety features include dual frontal airbags, door-mounted side-impact airbags, three-point seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters. With usable trunk space front and rear, the mid-engined Boxster has more stowage than most small roadsters. Both boots can be opened from the remote key fob, a feature that was added for 2003, but the remote on our car had a short range and we occasionally pressed the wrong button. Inside, Porsche has addressed a significant shortcoming by adding a glovebox, 5 liters big and wired to the alarm system. The cup holders, redesigned for 2003, pop out between the center vents and climate controls, but are flimsy. The optional navigation system ($2,630) was upgraded for 2003 and features a bigger, brighter display; called Porsche Communication Management, the system integrates navigation, audio, and trip computer. Luggage space is apportioned between fore and aft compartments, and is surprisingly good for a small two-seater. Getting at the engine, however, is another story. Although you can get to fluid reservoirs readily enough, access to the engine itself comes from below. Major maintenance should therefore be performed by your nearest authorized service facility. Wrangler has been modernized with a contemporary engine, electronics inside and underneath, and the body panels are now artfully curved for stiffness while appearing flat. However, the Wrangler remains the most maneuverable and trail capable vehicle from a showroom and will go places most owners don't dare drive. Or hike. If you're not used to hanging in your seatbelt like a puppet you have no idea what one can do. Still trail capable but not so maneuverable is the Wrangler Unlimited. There are enough differences between Wrangler and Wrangler Unlimited that a mere two- or four-door reference wouldn't do it justice. The delta in wheelbase (the distance from front wheel center to rear) is similar to that between a regular cab and crew cab pickup. Heated leather upholstery is available for Wrangler. You can swap the doors to half-size and fold down the windshield (though it's quite a chore) or power up the windows to indulge in climate control. No Jeeper ever had it quite like this. All Wranglers are powered by Chrysler's 24-valve 3.6-liter V6, here rated at 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. There's a choice of 6-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. A Wrangler gets away from a stop with no problem but falls off the acceleration curve as it runs into aerodynamic resistance at highway speeds. But if you buy a Wrangler for highway cruising you missed the point. Indeed, they will travel the Interstate with a modicum of comfort and civility but that's not what they're built for. Wranglers are better suited to all-weather urban runabouts, those living on a beach or off the grid or beaten path, or for those whose idea of a freeway is a fast section of dry wash or graded dirt run in 2WD. You can also use a Wrangler as a dinghy to tow behind your motorhome. The soft top that comes standard slides and folds horizontally on the roof, leaving the occupants further protected by door and window frames, although there's already a rollbar. The removable hardtop comes off in three pieces, a pair of T-tops with a sunroof over the rear seat. With T-tops removed, at 65 mph the buffeting grates on you; but with the top on, it feels smooth at 75 and beyond. In the popular two-door Wrangler there's very little storage space behind the rear seat, so four people with four medium backpacks is filled to overflowing. You wouldn't do any better with four people and luggage in a Mini, which is only 5 inches shorter. But if it's just you and some stuff, the rear seat can be removed, creating a spacious 61.2 cubic feet of cargo space; that's the configuration we prefer. Less likely, the rear seat can be remove from the four-door Wrangler Unlimited, making 87 cubic feet. Wranglers are available with all the electronic trimmings, including a touch-screen navigation, but sunlight plays havoc with display readability and on a trail you're moving around too much to touch things accurately. At least the USB port means music without discs or tapes getting dusty. We've driven Rubicons on their namesake trail, Oregon's Tillamook Forest, Michigan dunes and all the best (worst) stuff Moab has to offer, in far more comfort than Wranglers of old. If you don't want to build your own Jeep for trail use try a Rubicon. The Jeep warranty is probably better than your local 4x4 shop. Wrangler is not built for gas-mileage. Typically it averages in the teens and doesn't change much between daily driving and long highway runs. The current-generation Wrangler was introduced as a 2007 model. 2011 brought a refined interior. The 2013 Wrangler gets an improved soft top but carries over largely unchanged. Also new for 2013 is a Badge of Honor program in which you earn famous-trail badges (Rubicon, Hell's Revenge, etc.) by completing them. Wrangler has little direct competition. A Mercedes G-Class has off-highway ability of an Unlimited, more luxurious cabin and costs three times as much. You might also argue a Power Wagon and Raptor as Unlimited challengers. For factory trail vehicles the only things approaching a Wrangler are Toyota's FJ Cruiser and 4Runner, Nissan's Xterra or a 15-year-old Land Rover Defender 90. Even the Unlimited four-door, whether hard top or soft top looks like a Jeep. Round headlamps, seven-slot grille, separate fenders, removable doors (half-doors are optional), and fold-down windshield are all proven Jeep cues. However, if you look for the flat panels of earlier Wranglers and CJs you won't find any; every piece of sheetmetal, and the windshield are slightly curved here. Meanwhile, the Wrangler Unlimited is the only four-door 4x4 convertible on the market. The soft top slides and folds horizontally on the roof, leaving the occupants further protected by door and window frames, although there's already a rollbar. For 2013, the soft-top is easier to lift, though still more work than any convertible car, and some versions have a premium soft-top that borders on a headliner. The hardtop is optional (price dependent on finish); it comes off in three pieces, like a pair of T-tops in front and a sunroof over the rear seat. We spent a summer day on Jeep trails in the Northwest in a Wrangler Rubicon with all three parts removed, and it was fabulous. The soft top remains the sportiest in appearance and isn't much louder on the highway. We think the hard top is better for urban warriors, hunters, fishermen or other outdoorsmen because it provides better security for your outdoor gear in shopping center parking lots against thieves and better security for your food in camp against bears. Can't decide? Want both? The Dual Top option allows buyers to get both. We'd likely spring for Dual Top. Paint colors include bright Crush Orange, Gecko Green and Rock Lobster Red, alongside more traditional colors for those who want to blend into the environment, whether suburban or bucolic. If you like some of the body accessories fitted to the special edition models, many of those bits are available from Mopar, Chrysler's in-house parts division. They won't be cheap compared to the aftermarket, but the fit is guaranteed, there are no warranty issues, and your dealer might mix it in with your deal. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComDriving ImpressionWe got opportunities to gather driving impressions in a number of Wranglers, from the Unlimited in SUV-like surroundings, to the Rubicon on rock-climbing trails, and the Sport on fast backroad two-lanes at night. The Wrangler Unlimited Sahara, ours resplendent in rich brown with dark leather, is almost astonishingly smooth and quiet, totally civilized, thanks hugely to the 3.6-liter V6 engine. The 5-speed automatic is well-behaved, and doesn't hunt for gears; it uses the gear it's in. It was designed for use with Chrysler's 5.7-liter Hemi engine, now refined for the Pentastar V6, but still Jeep-like industrial strength. Most Wrangler Unlimiteds can tow 3500 pounds, others are rated to tow 2000 are are the two-door Wranglers. The Unlimited corners well, and head sway on weaving roads is light. You can only do so much with a solid axle and tall body, countered by a stability and vertical climbing friendly long wheelbase like that of a short-bed, regular cab full-size pickup. The Unlimited's 116-inch wheelbase is 10 inches more than a Nissan Xterra. What's good on the highway is not the best for maneuverability and the Unlimited doesn't turn nearly as well as a Wrangler. It also drags high points earlier, the Unlimited's breakover angle no better than a Land Rover LR2 cute ute. The twitchy handling that lingers in the Wrangler because of its short 95-inch wheelbase is not present in the Wrangler Unlimited. The first pleasant surprise of the Unlimited: it doesn't feel like a Jeep. With 285 horsepower you think a Wrangler should feel more powerful, and accelerate faster. We ran a lot of high-speed two-lane miles, and our Wrangler had to work, using momentum to pass. Weight and aerodynamic resistance take their toll, and with a Rubicon four-door heavier than a 470-hp Dodge Charger and sleek as a phone book, acceleration rates quickly fall off as speed increases. Most mud- and all-terrain tires aren't designed for West Texas or Montana speeds, either. For serious trail adventures the Rubicons are ideal, but we got a Moab Unlimited through Elephant Hill (rated 5 on a 1-10 scale) on street tire pressure with no issues. As things get nastier in a Rubicon you push a button to disconnect the splined front stabilizer to allow more lateral articulation at the wheels. If it gets worse, press another button to lock the rear differential, and if gets harder still, lock the front differential as well. In many low-speed trails the best technique is to take your feet off the pedals and just steer. At idle in Low Range, a Rubicon powers up and over obstacles that would totally stop most vehicles; even though torque peaks up at 4800 rpm, it plugs along like a tractor. This is because of the Rubicon's unique transfer-case low-range gearing of 4:1. With a manual transmission in first gear the overall gear reduction is 73:1 (53.6:1 automatic), as opposed to 10:1-12:1 in the average car, for maximum torque at baby-crawling speeds. Our Rubicon scarcely broke a sweat over rocky trails that would turn back all but the ruggedest and hardest-climbing of vehicles. We ran support for a 50k trail run in the Columbia River Gorge, over two 3500-foot peaks in Washington's Cascades, and it was a hard 12-hour day. 'In my old Jeep, I would have been in misery, dying to get out,' said our navigator. 'But I could ride all day in this Jeep.' On the highway at 70 mph the Wrangler can be a bit twitchy. Hopping out of an Unlimited as we did where the twitchiness is absent, the twitch in the short-wheelbase Wrangler is heightened. But as soon the driver adjusts, the turns and corrections come more smoothly. When the Wrangler is pointed straight and steady, it stays that way. Much of this is relative to tires and pressure; a 10th Anniversary's E-rated tires would work on a 3/4-ton pickup truck. There's a big difference in how stable the Wrangler feels with the top on and off, but little change in actual stability. With T-tops removed, at 65 mph it beats you up; but with the top on it feels smooth at 75 and beyond. Keep in mind that the Sport, Sahara and Rubicon models have different tires, shock absorbers, and gearing and this changes their character significantly. On the highway or the trail. Choose your Wrangler for the type of driving you'll be doing. The Wrangler is no gas-mileage champ. Wrangler is EPA-estimated at 17/21 mpg City/Highway; Unlimited is rated 16/20 mpg. Expect teens on the pavement and down below 5 mpg on the trail or sand dunes. Our Unlimited did 18 mpg on mostly pavement, a Rubicon 10th Anniversary was averaging 11 mpg over a 70-mile pavement drive and 9 hours on the trail. Of course, fuel economy on the trail will be poor in any car. The 6-speed manual transmission, German-made, isn't as easy to drive as the 5-speed automatic, American-made. The 6-speed has relatively long clutch and shift travel for a car but typical for a truck. Your driving style will affect economy far more than choice of transmission, but the manual is less-expensive and has a far superior crawl ratio for trail use. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComInteriorThe Wrangler interior was upgraded with new seats and better ergonomics for 2011. Who expects heated leather seats in a topless Jeep? On the other hand, they are easy to wipe off, and staying warm with the top down in the Rockies on a cool, sunny day is not the worst idea. We lived in a hardtop Wrangler for a week and it was all good, comfort-wise. With the top off there was a lot of wind buffeting in the back seat, but aside from that the Wrangler 'is more comfortable than my Jetta,' said our passenger, riding shotgun on rocky trails for a day. We've driven a Wrangler Unlimited Sahara. It's roomy and comfortable and, even with leather, still every bit a Jeep. Good rear legroom, easy to climb in and out. The rear 60/40 seat folds or can be removed to create 87 cubic feet of cargo space, comparable to a Toyota 4Runner. The center console makes a good armrest, though its height means you have to raise your elbow when using the shift lever. Power window switches are centered in the dash between omni-directional vents. Other controls are grouped around the radio or touchscreen entertainment head, on the stalks, steering wheel spokes, and ahead of the shifter. Bouncing around with your hand on the shifter is not only discouraged for the transmission, you readily get bumped into the switches, and hazard flashers look silly on the trail. There's very little storage space behind the Wrangler's rear seat, so four people with four medium backpacks is filled to overflowing. But if it's just you and some stuff, the rear seat can be removed, creating a spacious 61.2 cubic feet of cargo space. The Media Center options have their downsides, and if you go offroad or take the top down much, you won't like them. The touch screen is invisible in the sun. In a bouncing Jeep it's not easy to land your finger where you want it, even trying to tune the radio. A Jeep needs knobs you can grab. The 6.5-inch screen is reasonably large, but with some functions less than half of the screen is used, tiny little radio words, the other 60 percent says JEEP. The navigation system in the Media Center is fairly simple in its display. It didn't make any errors on the routes we programmed, although finding the button to enter a destination was maddening. We suggest you skip the Media Center, be satisfied with six speakers in the standard sound system, and get your own GPS for navigation. It's a Jeep-like choice.
