Today, roughly 60 years later, the car's world-class design characteristics can be found in pretty much every modern automaker's aesthetic DNA. BODYWORK/TRIM The beneficiary of a thorough, frame-off restoration that was completed in the late '90s by Fort Wayne, Indiana's R&S Classic Auto, this killer drop-top is one of the sweetest tri-shields we've ever seen! The restorers began by stripping the car's curvaceous, mostly handmade body all the way to bare metal. When that heavy cleaning was complete, all those Harley Earl-designed panels were assembled into a correct profile that presents largely blemish-free surfaces. After that thorough test fitting, a smooth coat of Matador Red paint was teased to a glossy, show-stopping shine. And today, this Skylark's prestigious appearance is a lust worthy representation of one of America's most glorious eras of motoring. ENGINE Lift the car's 'alligator hood' and you'll find a 322 cubic inch Fireball V8 which wears a correct "V2I0457" assembly stamp and twists a stout 188 horsepower into 300 ft./lb. of low-end torque. Nicknamed the "Nail valve", and eventually known as the "Nailhead", this fully detailed mill employs greater lift and better duration to create a Kansas-flat power band. Funny thing is: hot rodders of the day actually coined the engine's nickname as a derisive description of its puny valvetrain and restrictive plumbing, but they certainly couldn't ignore its stellar power! The proven block has undoubtedly been rebuilt, and probably looks much better today than when it growled off the assembly line. Aesthetically, the mill, which perches a massive air cleaner and big, 4-barrel carburetor above factory heads, has been painted a traditional green hue. There are many fresh pieces like pliable belts, a tagged Delco-Remy generator and proven Hypalon ignition cables. A glossy firewall meets satin fenders to frame those pieces in a construct of distinctly American curves. And overall, the engine seems clean, simple and highly functional. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Essentially, Buick's original Skylark is a fully optioned and highly customized Roadmaster. And the firm's decision to use its proven C-Body architecture certainly wasn't a bad one as quality and reliability, words rarely uttered in the same sentence as "highly customized", remained solid. The basis for this drop-top's solidity is an industrial strength chassis that rides on a correctly restored suspension. At the center of that suspension, a new-for-1953 Twin Turbine Dynaflow, which wears a correct "J" assembly stamp, twists power to a factory rear end. At the edges of that drivetrain, big drum brakes initiate quick, drama-free stops. Turns come courtesy of factory power steering. A single-pipe exhaust system makes good use of a factory replacement muffler. Everything rolls on familiar Kelsey-Hayes wires, which spin 235/75R15 Dayton whitewalls around "SKYLARK" branded center caps. And, with a fully sorted undercarriage that's ready to hit the road, this big cruiser would be right at home chauffeuring the family to their favorite dinner spot. INTERIOR An excellent mix of new world style and old world luxury, this Skylark's striking interior, restored by Jenkins Restorations of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, is the perfect place to parade down Main Street. The car's plush benches are stuffed with thick padding, covered in pleated leather and trimmed in era-correct hardware. In front of those seats, a Matador Red dash hangs a correct Selectronic radio, a rebuilt clock and chrome-trimmed gauges behind a textured instrument panel. At the base of that dash, high quality carpet is anchored by slick "Skylark" branded sill plates. At the sides of that carpet, ornate, chrome-trimmed door panels found small power window switches between correct chrome handles. In front of the driver, an intricate, color-keyed steering wheel spins a full horn ring around a customized centerpiece. And behind the passengers, a snug-fitting cowl snaps over a fully restored trunk that centers a fifth wire wheel inside a fifth whitewall tire. The body, which is all the original sheetmetal except for the floorpans that had to be replaced due to rust, is covered in a gorgeous shade of the correct cream paint. $30,000 was spent just on the paint job, which is absolutely immaculate. At the front of the body you have the body width front bumper just below the massive front grille. Inside the grille you'll find the four headlights and the R/T logo. Chrome dodge lettering lies on the front of the hood, while at the back you have four chrome slits in the hood that act as a non-functional hood scoop. Chrome trim starts in the front fender well and extends through the rear tire wells. R/T logos grace the quarter panels and the rear of the car with another chrome dodge emblem. Another body width bumper is attached to the rear just above the dual exhausts dumps. Pop the hood on this Coronet R/T and you'll find the original, massive 440 Magnum V8 filling the engine bay. Even though the Hemi was available in the R/T Coronets, most understood how powerful and feared the Magnums were when they left the factory. Over 10,000 Coronet's were ordered with the 440 Magnum, while only 238 left the factory with the Hemi. During its extensive restoration, the 440 received a complete rebuild from former Penske Racing and Junior Johnson engine builder, Steve Triplett. During the build, it was bored .040 over, received forged pistons, high performance valves, and a hydraulic flat tappet cam and lifters. At the top of the air filter, silver lettering on a red backing give away that what you are looking at is in fact a 440 Magnum. On the side of the block you will find the 2536430 casting number and the branding that shows it was finished on the night shift on June 15th 1966. The block painted in a bluish-green looks fantastic against the cream engine bay color. Put the Coronet on a lift and you'll see the aforementioned new floor pans that were painted in the same cream shade as the exterior. Stopping power comes thanks to front disc brakes and rear drum brakes. Attached to the Magnum 440 is the original A727 Torqueflite 3-speed automatic transmission that feeds power through a driveshaft to the 8 rear axle with a 2.94 open differential. Spent gases travel out the cast iron exhaust manifolds through the H-pipe dual exhausts to create a breathtaking sound at the back of the car. Brand new shocks can be found at all four corners behind the 15" Chrome Magnum 500 rims that have been wrapped in BF Goodrich Silvertown red line rubber. Inside, the interior is just as impressive as the rest of the car. Open the door and you'll be greeted by a completely restored black vinyl interior that features the correct bucket seats that were re-covered by Rhoades Upholstery in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina. Originally the Coronet left the factory with white and gold trim, however, the owner opted to restore it to black vinyl with chrome trim during its restoration. The fantastic look starts with the door panels that feature black vinyl and chrome trim that has chrome Coronet R/T badging. In front of the driver is the 150mph speedo and instrument cluster. Between the two front bucket seats is the control for the 3-speed automatic transmission and the radio. Above the driver is a taught black headliner that looks stunning. If you like your tri-five to be show ready AND fun to drive, but a Bel Air is just too common and too cramped, this award-winning Nomad is your next cruiser! Despite the exceptional sales of Chevrolet's youthful Bel Air, the brand's higher priced Nomad proved less popular and, thanks to attrition, has now become even scarcer. Fortunately, this slick resto-mod has always been a solid, complete car that benefitted from decades of owners who were smart enough to know what they had. And recently, when it fell into the hands of Scott and Gary Miller of North Wilkesboro, North Carolina, big money was spent on a thorough restoration. The owners of industrial chic Miller Brothers Hot Rod Barn, Scott and Gary rebuilt the Nomad with every intention of traveling the show circuit. But, after a year's worth of trophies and accolades, the temptation to drive the car proved too great to ignore. Today, this Chevy hangs straight, mostly-original sheetmetal under a rich coat PPG two-stage that's been buffed and color-sanded to a fantastic shine. One thing about classic car guys is their uncanny ability to methodically plot, plan and execute even the minutest details. When the Miller brothers restored this spectacular cruiser, they probably spent months scheduling, budgeting and searching for the exact elements that would bring their vision to life. At the front of the car, a trademark, body-width bumper hangs below a straight stainless grille, clear parking lamps and chrome-trimmed, tri-bar headlights. At the top of that grille, a fresh Chevrolet crest is centered beneath a classic 'jetbird' hood ornament. At the back of that hood, dark greenhouse glass is highlighted by well-maintained trim, a simple chrome mirror and opposing stainless wipers. At the base of that glass, polished fender spears perfectly complement traditional door handles and monochromatic Bel Air emblems. And at the back of the car, a second, body-width bumper rides below vertical tailgate trim and blue dot Bel Air tail lights. This sweet looking Chevy is powered by a show-detailed LT1 that, with roughly 300 horsepower, offers solid, reliable motivation. Built to tear up the street and wow show goers alike, the fully-sorted mill combines a sturdy iron block and lightweight aluminum heads with hypereutectic pistons to transform stout 10.4 to 1 compression into razor-sharp throttle response. At the front of the body-matched block, a Street & Performance accessory drive spins a chrome alternator and Vintage Air AC compressor at the sides of an "LT-1" branded air cleaner. Once air enters that cleaner, it flows through a bowtie-branded throttle body to a factory intake that's bolted down over completely stock internals. High octane fossils are provided by GM electronic fuel injection. Sparks are sequenced through beefy Taylor Spiro Pros. Spent gases swirl through slick, ceramic-coated shorties. And cooling comes courtesy of a polished Griffin radiator that's fitted with corrugated hoses, an electronic puller fan and a fully polished support. On the visual end of the spectrum, chrome valve covers and a polished breather perfectly complement bright red rail covers and a chrome brake booster. The glossy engine compartment, which includes a smoothed firewall, has been completely finished to match the car's stunning PPG exterior. And niceties such as braided lines, polished fluid reservoirs and stainless hood hardware add the kind of flashy detail that'll push enthusiasts right over the edge! Throw the car on a lift and you'll find solid floors that, along with a professionally powdercoated frame, still sport a restoration-fresh appearance. At the center of those floors, a proven 4L60E 4-speed spins torque to a '79 Trans Am rear end that's fitted with moderate, 3.50 gears. At the ends of that drivetrain, a fully rebuilt suspension makes good use of 2-inch drop spindles, 2-inch drop springs and Creative Controls power rack and pinion steering. At the corners of that suspension, GM disc brakes turn stress-inducing traffic into a relaxing exercise in sightseeing. Between those discs, polished, 2.5-inch exhaust employs great sounding Flowmaster mufflers.
