The Impala is a full-size front-wheel drive sedan capable of carrying up to six people. It comes in four trim levels: LS, LT, LTZ, and SS. The LS and LT include a 211 hp 3.5-liter V6 engine which is also available in an E85-capable version. The LT is available with a 233 hp 3.9-liter E85-capable V6 which is standard on the LTZ. The SS comes with a 303 hp 5.3-liter V8 engine. All trims come with a four-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment includes front bucket seats and front, side and side curtain airbags. The Chevrolet Impala is a carryover from 2007. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Chevrolet Impala is a big, roomy sedan. While classified as a midsize sedan, it's large for that class. Close in size to the Toyota Avalon, competes with mid-size and full-size cars. Among them: the Ford Taurus, Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, as well as the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, and Nissan Altima. We find the Impala's neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks fresh, and it is, having been sharpened when the Impala was last redesigned for 2006. Other people think so: the Impala is among the top-10 best-selling cars in the U.S. This is a roomy car, in the front as well as the back seats, and getting in and out is easy. The Impala has a big trunk with a big trunk lid that makes loading cargo easy, and it has a healthy cargo capacity. Optional flip-and-fold rear seats are exclusive in its class, and provide not only holding wells for groceries but a flat cargo floor that expands the trunk for long items. On the road, the Impala is very stable, a nice cruiser. There's lots of low-end torque from the larger of the two available V6 engines, a 3.9-liter V6 with advanced technologies. Step on the gas and it goes. Given its size, the Impala handles well, and surprisingly so. Several models are available, ranging from strong, reliable, fuel-efficient family sedan to sleek and powerful performance car. The mid-level Impala LT probably best exemplifies the model line. We like the LT with the optional 3.9-liter V6, which features GM's Active Fuel Management to improve real-world fuel economy. The LTZ adds a heavy-duty suspension, leather interior and convenience features. The SS comes with a small-block 5.3-liter V8 engine that sounds great and delivers strong acceleration performance. Chevrolet continues to improve and upgrade the Impala. We highly recommend the StabiliTrak electronic stability control. The audio system has been upgraded for 2008, and XM Satellite Radio is standard on all models. OnStar is standard, and in its latest version it will automatically communicate the nature and severity of a crash as well as its location to the 911 centers. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The 2008 Chevrolet Impala presents a clean, neat, pleasing design that's not so homogenized as to be boring. It's an attractive car. Most recently re-styled for 2006, the current Impala features smooth lines. The big headlamps have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units and are smoothly integrated into the front end. The tail lights are nicely integrated as well. These details complement other quality attributes, such as tight tolerances of 3.5 mm or less between body panels and substantial grab-style door handles that won't pinch your fingers or snap away from your hand on a cold morning. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise. The LS, LT and LTZ are distinguished by exterior trim but share one front end design, while the SS sports a unique grille with SS-signature black-diamond crosshatch pattern. The Impala SS also features Corvette-inspired bright exhaust tips. A rear spoiler is standard on LTZ and SS models, and is available on LT. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Chevrolet Impala features a new generation of V6 engines. We found them to be smooth and quiet if not bristling with power. They feature variable valve timing, which changes the orientation of the camshaft automatically, adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions. The 3.5-liter V6 that comes standard on LS and LT generates 211 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. It gets an EPA-rated 18/29 mpg City/Highway. The FlexFuel version gets the same 18/29 mpg rating on gasoline or 14/21 mpg with E85 ethanol, useful in areas that sell ethanol. The 3.9-liter V6 (optional on LT, standard on LTZ) produces 233 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. It features a variable-length intake system and variable valve timing. It also features Active Fuel Management, electronic software that shuts off three cylinders when full power is not needed. Chevrolet says Active Fuel Management improves fuel economy by up to 12 percent in certain driving situations. Chevy has applied this technology before to V8s (where it was called Displacement on Demand), but this is its first appearance on a V6. The 3.9-liter V6 gets and EPA-rated 18/28 mpg, and it's FlexFuel capable and rated 13/20 mpg on E85. The four-speed automatic transmission is responsive and was never an issue, though some of the competition now offers more flexible five-speed automatics. The V8 that comes on the SS delivers 303 horsepower and 323 pound-feet of torque. That's more power than any other entry in the class. To sample that, we slammed the throttle open at a stop in first gear. The traction control system let the left front tire spin wildly for a few seconds before it caught up. We appreciated the extra power and torque available in a kickdown or passing situation, and we loved the brawny, muscular sound of this engine at full throttle. It's a challenge to launch quickly and cleanly at the same time, however. Besides wheelspin, there's a lot of torque steer: Slam down the throttle and you'll feel a significant tug on the steering wheel. The V8 features Active Fuel Management, which shifts between eight-cylinder and four-cylinder operation, depending on speed and load. The V8 is EPA-rated at 16/24 mpg using the more stringent 2008 test procedures. All Impalas come with a MacPherson-strut coil-over-spring independent front suspension, with gas-charged struts and a stabilizer bar. The rear suspension uses a trailing tri-link setup with gas-charged struts and coil springs. A rear stabilizer bar is standard on all models. LS and LT models come with the softer FE1 suspension, while LTZ and SS come with the performance-tuned FE3 setup. We found a lot of pitch, dive, and roll in the chassis, plus a lot of uncertain driving moments with the added power of the SS. The SS, particularly, drives as though its chassis needed more development time before production. Steering on all models is over-assisted, fairly numb and uncommunicative. The Impala's four-wheel disc brake system (vented in front, solid in rear) represents an improvement over previous generations. Comprising new front brakes, improved rear brakes, and a new brake booster, the system is designed for quieter operation, longer pad life, and more resistance to brake pulsation. ABS, when ordered, includes Electronic Brake-force Distribution and traction control. On the road we found the Impala's brakes very much to our liking: powerful, direct, and linear, with a nice, progressive ratio of pedal travel to stopping progression. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The 2008 Impala has a lot going for it inside as well. Like the exterior, the cabin was completely redesigned for 2006, and has remained comfortably the same since then. The standard seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support compared to previous models. We didn't find the SS seats particularly comfortable or supportive. Lumbar support is too aggressive, while there's not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. A twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. Impala LS, LT and LTZ models have wood trim, with brushed silver trim a no-cost option on LT and LTZ. The SS comes standard with unique metallic trim panels, with wood as an option. We found the instrument panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. Interior materials are a grade above average. The dual-zone climate control system that comes on all but the base LS model is a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. It can support up to a 12-degree temperature difference side-to-side. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The driver information center offers more than 50 different alerts, depending on the vehicle's equipment. The glovebox is large enough to actually hold stuff. For 2008, a new family of audio systems features radios compatible with Generation 7.0 OnStar. The base audio system comes with six speakers, AM/FM/CD/MP3 capability, and XM Satellite Radio. It features speed-sensing volume control and a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between AM, FM and XM. We really liked this system because we could set up all of our favorite stations in one row, for example, allowing us to quickly switch between AM news, XM news, FM music stations, and CDs. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Presets for the equalizer let you quickly switch settings from rock to country & western to talk radio. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. Not so with GM's radios. The Impala sound system is sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional system adds an in-dash six-CD changer. The premium system is Bose. All radios include a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices such as an iPod or remote cassette player. The new Generation 7.0 OnStar offers Turn-by-Turn navigation with the optional Directions and Connections service. Turn-by-Turn navigation directs the driver through the route by using the digital readout lines in the radio head. Directions are downloaded by the OnStar advisor to the vehicle and can be played back or paused anywhere from start to destination. Besides being easy to use (all directions are downloaded to the car by an advisor) Turn-by-Turn is less expensive than a GPS navigation system. The back seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The forward-flipping rear seat cushions reveal a storage tub underneath that can contain spills or transport a variety of items. The tub also serves as a covered storage area beneath the seat with cushions down; and exposes convenient grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped forward. A generous pass-through from the trunk can be created by flipping the seat bottoms forward and the seat backs flat. The trunk is larger than that of most mid-size cars, at 18.6 cubic feet, and a huge trunk opening makes loading easier. The Ford Explorer is a midsize sport utility that has been America's favorite for the last 15 years in a row. It is quieter, rides better, handles more precisely, and has a nicer interior than previous models. The Explorer lineup from bottom to top includes the XLS, XLT, XLT Sport, Eddie Bauer, and Limited. It is available with a 210 hp 4.0-liter V6 or 292 hp 4.6-liter V8. The XLS includes the 4.0-liter V6 engine and five-speed automatic. XLT adds a chrome grille, unique bumper and trim, power seat, fog lamps, puddle lamps, 16-inch tires and wheels, an overhead console and additional storage. The XLT sport adds performance tuning. The Eddie Bauer version includes things like running boards, 17-inch wheels, more wood and leather, and remote keyless entry. Source: Model Reviews Introduction When you mess with a winner, you must be very, very careful, and that's what Ford was when they redesigned the Explorer, America's favorite midsize sport utility for the last 15 years in a row. By careful we don't mean conservative, either. By careful, we mean Ford spent serious effort dotting the i's and crossing the t's, looking after the details that make all the difference. At the same time, Ford realigned the models and overhauled the pricing structure, giving customers more truck for less money, nearly $4,000 less in some cases. The new Explorer is available with a V6 or V8. It's a traditional midsize SUV with body-on-frame construction, and competes against the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota 4Runner, and Nissan Pathfinder. We were well pleased with the new steering, the new suspension, and the new brakes used on the 2006 model, all of which have improved by at least one order of magnitude. The new 2006 Explorer is quieter than last year's model and it rides better. It also leans less in corners and the brakes are more responsive. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround The new 2006 Ford Explorer looks like the F-150 pickup in front, with finer, scaled-down features. There are four different grilles to distinguish the various models. The combination of more chrome, bigger and bolder lamps and the new square-cornered aero mirrors make it look more like a Lexus SUV than a Ford, and we mean that in the most complimentary way. They don't want you to mistake it, though, so every 2006 Explorer badge is about twice as big and twice as thick as those on 2005 models. Between the elaborate headlamps and the revamped rear lamps, it's a big, empty box with five large doors and a whole bunch of space inside. With the V8 engine, the new Explorer is rated to tow up to a whopping 7,300 pounds. And it's rated to carry up to 1,500 pounds of payload. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression Two new engines are available for the 2006 Ford Explorer. The 4.0-liter single-overhead-cam V6 has been retuned with variable valve timing and is rated at 210 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque. The V8 is the traditional 4.6-liter single-overhead-cam V8, but now it has three valves per cylinder, two intake and one exhaust, for better breathing, 53 additional horsepower at 292, and 300 pound-feet of torque. With the V6, you get a five-speed overdrive automatic. With the V8, you get a brand new Ford-built six-speed automatic overdrive transmission with full electronic control of upshifting, downshifting and torque converter functions. Both powertrains are quiet and smooth. The lighter V6 is a bit easier to turn and maneuver, but both are very pleasant, competent and quiet rides. Ford told us before we drove the truck that customers had demanded quieter operation from the new Explorer, so they have used the body-on-frame design to maximum advantage to quiet the truck down, isolate it from the road, and halt the transmission of noise and vibration. In this respect, Ford has done an exemplary job on the new truck. The AC system operates with 30 percent less noise yet moves and exchanges more air. Conversations are easily heard, the music sounds good, and the mirrors, with their new square corners defying aero logic, are mercifully quiet, as are the tires. This is a big, heavy family truck with 15 years of continuous sales success and a few dark episodes behind it (involving previous-generation models), so they have utterly bathed it in safety equipment, from standard Roll Stability Control (also used in Volvo, Land Rover, and other Ford Truck products) to smart air bags to side air bags to an air curtain setup for the second and third rows. Ford says it expects a full house of five-star safety ratings, the highest possible, when the truck is tested. The new steering on the 2006 Explorer has a much heftier feel at highway speeds with plenty of assist for parking. The new suspension is one of the most supple we've driven on any SUV in this big class. And the new brakes work much harder with much less pedal pressure and travel than before. Body roll is much better (the Explorer leans less in corners), and the general feeling of being planted on Earth is stronger on this new chassis. The new chassis is some 63-percent stiffer than before, and a stiff chassis is a key element for crisp handling and a smooth ride. This truck manages to be isolated from the road, but well connected to it, at the same time. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior Everything inside the Explorer is new for 2006. Every switch, button, face, texture and panel of the interior has been changed, changed to a much more modern, crisper presentation, one of Ford design boss J Mays's personal design campaigns brought to life. There is a dark wood for most models and darker, richer wood for the Eddie Bauer version. The graphics are accented with metal surrounds both shiny and matte, depending. On the downside, we saw a fair amount of glare reflected off the dash top onto the windshield of the early models we drove. Second-row seats are available as a 60/40 split bench seat, a 60/40 split bench with recline and third-row access, or two bucket seats and a console. The bucket seats are more comfortable for adults, but the bench seats fold down better for cargo. The third row, when ordered, sits almost two inches higher than before so kids can see out better. The third row is always a 50/50 split, but is available with manual or power folding and unfolding. And now the floor really is completely flat when all the seats are folded, with almost no forward rise (2 degrees as opposed to 10 before). With three seats, you get 13.6, then 43.9, then 83.7 cubic feet of space as the seats fold down; the five-seater has slightly more room with the seats folded. The DVD-based navigation system is very easy to use, with excellent colors and graphics, though the screen is on the small side. Ford designers may have gone over the top on the front door armrests, the latch pull, and the opening handle. The armrest is very large and filled with foam to assist in side crash protection, with the chrome latch pull rounded around the leading edge, but the door handle is buried underneath it, where the human wrist cannot comfortably go. Otherwise, the new Explorer interior works very well. The new seats are at once more supportive and more comfortable than the old, hard Explorer seats, the colors and trims and combinations are elegant and tasteful, the metallic trims just about right, not overdone. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary Ford is a lot better at trucks than cars these days, and with the new Explorer, they have shown just how good they are at getting the basics right and getting the pricing realigned. They understand that today's customer is keenly aware of all the choices in this segment, is simply not willing to pay as much for a new SUV as they may have been five years ago, and that the new customer wants more goodies for the money or he or she will go elsewhere. This new Explorer is as much an exercise in cost accounting as truck design, and it succeeds on both counts. Overall, a great value. Established almost 20 years ago, Minotti is a diverse, family owned operation which has built a fantastic reputation for providing both top notch building components and great looking replicas of some of the most popular Ford street rods to ever roll out of Dearborn, Michigan. Once this cars solid and detailed Minotti body was fully cured and completely pre-assembled, it hopped a truck to Eastern Rod and Customs in Raleigh, North Carolina where a coat of trailer queen worthy Tangelo Pearl Orange urethane was massaged to perfection. Today, with only 1075 miles on its ground up build, this sizzling street rod features the tailored sophistication of an OEM show piece, crisp contours that are much better than original Henry Ford steel, and a whole roster of top notch modifications which add even more appeal to its already outrageous design. At the front of this slick ’37 Ford, an aftermarket chrome grille sits inside two smoked and chrome trimmed headlights which incorporate hidden LED turn signals below traditional halogen bulbs. Behind that grille, a lightweight fiberglass hood meets a chopped and split windshield which is cleared by stainless wipers and sealed by fresh black weatherstripping. And at the top of the car, a great looking roof line sits over new smoked side and back glass. At the bottom of the car, like-new running boards ride between shaved, remote activated doors and stainless trimmed side outlet exhaust pipes. And naturally, the back of the car is just as clean as its profile with a shaved, handle actuated trunk lid and simple, chrome trimmed cat’s eye tail lamps providing the only breaks in a sea of vivid orange paint.When it comes to the cars performance, ‘bigger is always better’! Under the fully removable hood you’ll find a fresh 454 cubic inch, 450 horsepower big block Chevrolet crate engine. At the top of that engine, a custom air filter funnels wind into a Demon 750 4-barrel carburetor which is outfitted with braided fuel lines, high quality Jegs fittings and a Marshall fuel pressure gauge. That massive carburetor sends air/fuel mixture into a chrome Edelbrock Performer intake which feeds eight sequentially fired cylinders that are sparked by a traditional HEI distributor and loomed plug wires. The cars clean and smoothed engine compartment is relatively sparse aside from a proven Walker radiator which wears a polished cowl cover and feeds chrome flex hoses. And it’s finished in the same pearl scent orange as the cars exterior panels, which allows the thoroughly detailed motor, with its assortment braided hoses and trick details like a Lokar throttle linkage, to create plenty of trophy winning texture and contrast.Behind the cars professionally designed big block engine you’ll find a rebuilt TH400 3-speed automatic transmission which is one of the toughest and most reliable units GM has ever produced. Power flows from that proven transmission through a new driveshaft to a tough Ford 9 inch rear end which is bolted between the cars Tangelo Orange frame, a Heidts front subframe with tubular control arms, and a great handling four link rear suspension. And exhaust flows from the cars ceramic coated Hooker headers through ceramic coated true dual pipes to great sounding ceramic coated Magnaflow mufflers. This 1955 Ford Fairlane Sunliner is a pristine example why these were the go-to choice for car enthusiasts in the late 50's. The Fairlane, which received its name from the Henry Ford estate near Dearborn, Michigan, replaced the aging Crestline as Ford's premier full size offering in 1955. This 1955 Ford Fairlane Sunliner has received a frame up restoration to sit in the current condition that you see today and is the perfect vehicle to take out on a nice warm summer day with the top down. It has received all the upgrades you would want to create a durable cruiser, while keeping the historic look of the vehicle intact. Before we get too far lets decode the VIN and body tag information. VIN/Serial number: U5LC-179017 U: 272ci 2-barrel V8. 5: 1955 L: Assembled in Long Beach, CA C: Convertible, Sunliner 179017: Production sequence Body: 76B Fairlane Sunliner convertible Color: A Raven Black Trim: L White/Red vinyl interior Production Code: 5h-215 Assembled on August 5th and 215 in the production sequence This first year Fairlane Sunliner is covered in a correct coat of Raven Black and a light shade of red. The combination that is separated by chrome trim looks fantastic under our showroom lights. At the front of the body you have the iconic look of the checkered grille that is flanked by stacked headlights resting on the front of the fender. Below the grille is a body width chrome front bumper that wraps around the front fenders. Above the grille is the Ford crest which hangs in-between a brand new hood ornament and Fairlane text. The hood leads your eyes to a wraparound front windshield. Down the sides of the body feature the signature 'check' chrome trim that separates the red and black. At the back of the car you'll notice fender skirts on the rear tire openings and the jet-tube rear taillights. Finishing off the look, the rear chrome bumper protrudes just far enough to make room for a spare tire. While this Fairlane did leave the factory with a 272 cubic inch V8, somewhere along the line someone opted to add 17 cubic inches of engine inside the Sunliner by equipping it with a 289ci small block Ford V8. The block, painted in red, accents the black engine bay quite nicely. At the top of the block, an air filter sits on top of an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and below that is an Edelbrock intake. The valve covers have been dressed up with Ford Racing valve covers and the air filter box has been painted to match the red on the car. Put this Fairlane on a lift and you'll see that bolted to the durable little 289 is a 3-speed automatic transmission. As far as suspension goes, the Fairlane uses a double a-arm style front suspension and a rear leaf spring suspension. Under the car you will also notice how spent gasses travel out the cast iron headers through dual exhausts that exit out the chrome tips at the back of the car. 4-wheel drum brakes are responsible for slowing the convertible. While in front of those brakes are the steel rims that have full chrome inserts wrapped in wide white wall tires. This Sunliner is impressive regardless of where you look, but the interior might just be the true winner of this ride. Open the door to this '55 Ford and you will reveal a completely restored two-tone white and black vinyl interior. The interior features two bench seats capable of comfortably hauling six people to your local car show. Up front is the new for 1955 dash design that retained the see-through "astra-dial" speedometer that made an appearance in 1954. To the right of the steering wheel are the controls for the Ford Magic Aire system and the AM radio. Luckily the previous owner upgraded the sound system with a Kenwood audio system that is somewhat hidden under the dash. The interior is comfortable and is a perfect place to log miles from with the top down. Included in the sale of this gorgeous '55 convertible is the owner's manual, spare set of keys, and manual for the upgraded stereo. I could not add the loud Flowmaster mufflers, stroke and poke arguably the best Ford engine ever, the 302 to 347, change the white top to black, change the beauty rings to Cragars or Magnum 500s, add a Mach 1 hockey puck side stripes, add a Mach 1 hood, and repaint the car in a wild House of Colors GOLD flake. The change of heart came when I drove it to the recent Good Guys event and people just congregated around "Golden Girl" and looked her up and down, underneath and inside, took photos. This car is just TOO NICE to do my thing. Therefore, I have decided to just to let someone else appreciate her originality, her essence, her grace and just let her be as she was and still pretty much is, almost as she came from the factory and left the showroom floor that gorgeous Summer day in 1972... just as she was custom ordered by her original owners, Robert and Carol Anne. "Golden Girl" is an all original, unmolested, unrestored, original paint, near mint survivor car, found in a Silicon Valley garage, non-op'ed since 2001, piled up with stuff as if she was just a shelf holding the family's collection of stuff through the years. The original top was soiled and torn here and there, the white wall tires were out of round, there were a few door dings and the fender met the support pole in the garage. The driver seat was torn and the seat frame bent. There were a couple tiny door dings and the paint had some discoloration here and there. Overall the paint gleams! The interior is near mint and all the weatherstripping and rubber are very pliable, like new. The engine is completely intact with all required vacuum hoses attached. My first order of business was to get it road worthy and safe and looking good before I began my Muscle Car resto-modifications. All the fluids and filters were changed, including new brake hoses, wheel cylinders and master cylinder. A transmission flush and new pan gaskets were done. Output seals, pinion seal and a differential flush with fresh gear oil and Limited Slip Additive completed the drive train. New Idler Arm was added and a wheel alignment was performed. New BFG Radial TA's make the car pop with Muscle Car styling, as seen in the original “Gone in 60 Seconds” Eleanor of 1974. Golden Girl still sports her original style hub caps and beauty rings as driven by James Bond in “Diamonds Are Forever”. The Mustang drives straight and true. After the Good Guys event, I went against my original Restomod vision and replaced the Top with a Concourse correct White Top with Glass (not plastic) from National Parts Depot. Then, I set about to repair the seat, but no one seemed to have the correct Ginger Sebring covers. The Ginger Houndstooth-style from TMI and others won't cut it. Like a miracle from above, a local 1970 Yellow BOSS 302 owner listed on Craigslist a pair of buckets in Ginger Sebring Knit from a 1971-73 Mustang/Cougar he adapted. I bought the pair within 2 days of his listing. Mustang car guys like us can talk for hours about our cars. I had scanned the local CL for the past 3-4 years and I have never seen a pair in this material in this like new condition for over 2 years! Heaven-sent score! My upholstery guy is a true master craftsman with over 40 years in the business. He knocked out the job in 3 days. Expensive but excellent work. Done. The exterior paint was treated to a hand wax with ZYMOL. It's expensive and really is the best stuff that leaves virtually no swirls or lines. Golden Girl is 42 year old and I just did not want to risk a cut and buff. It shined up beautifully with a hand job as seen in the photos. A couple more wax jobs, perhaps a clay bar, some engine and interior detailing, Golden Girl should bring good times and possibly GOLD at 1972 and older vintage car shows. The paint and body is very striking, though it is not perfect and reveals "factory" mass production imperfections such as some paint over-runs (or is that factory dipping in rustproofing?) and slight door gap issues, but it is still presentable as an ORIGINAL SURVIVOR car IMHO. Unmolested survivor cars in good quality condition are just now becoming ALL THE RAGE and just NOW beginning to command a PREMIUM over Re-Painted and Re-Stored cars. It is ONLY ORIGINAL ONCE as they say. It has beautiful patina, the little imperfections give it life, character and a STORY...it really looks fine to me and the many who have seen it, but everyone's standard is different. If you must respray on it, go for it. You should win MANY shows for originality. With a little more work, you can have a 100 point MCA concours trailer queen. Golden Girl is relatively EASY to get to a 100 Point SCORE because everything is nearly intact. You won't have to scour the country for a bunch of hard to find NOS parts. She still has her original Autolite muffler too! 1972 for some reason is the cut off for many vintage car shows. It is said to be the official end of the Muscle Car era. Good Guys car events seem to restrict cars to 1972 and older. Go figure. But no worries. Golden Girl can join the fun, the shows, the parades and the cruises. 1972 was a tough year for Federal Safety. All these buzzers and lights that we are accustom to today in modern cars, that started full on in 1972. Buzzers and lights go off in Golden Girl if you don't buckle up. Pretty cool, actually, to sit in a historically important model year. It is my understanding that Robert returned from Vietnam and special ordered this gorgeous DEARBORN, MICHIGAN -built Mustang from Canyon Ford in Southern California for the love of his life, Carol Anne. There is even a special Ford-logo plate on the dash near the radio from the factory that says: CUSTOM BUILT FOR CAROL ANNE - - - -. I’ve never ever seen this before!! Robert is a bit of a hoarder and eccentric, so most records are lost or buried in his home. However, I found receipts in the trunk that follow their time in Southern California in 1975 and migration to Arizona circa 1979 and then to Silicon Valley in the early 1980's. The car has been out of the DMV system for over a decade. If you are in California, there is a chance you may need to bring the car to a local Highway Patrol office for an inspection. Anyway, Golden Girl sat neglected in the garage for years and years as Robert and Carol raised their children. Robert supposedly had a history with Steve Jobs and Apple, which we can't confirm nor deny. There is a stain ring on Golden Girl's trunk that I'd like to imagine was from Steve's coffee mug as he brainstormed Robert's Silicon Valley garage. I'm selling this car on a Bill of Sale, you get the original PINK SLIP with Robert and Carol Anne's original names and signature on it, and you become the SECOND OWNER if you are the very fortunate high bidder. I really hope Golden Girl gets into a museum, a private collection or just to a wonderful person who will love and treasure her. Golden Girl is a very special girl. She is VERY RARE. 1 of 1 rare. Of the 125,093 Mustangs built in 1972, she is a 1 of 1 as optioned. There is no other Mustang out there, like her. The Marti Stat Report testifies to her extreme rarity and uniqueness as follows: 125,093 1972 Mustangs, 6,401 were Convertibles. Of them, 3,224 came with 302-2V Engines. 1,969 of those had FMX Automatic Transmissions. 108 of them were painted Gold Glow Metallic, of which 68 had Ginger Knitted Vinyl Bucket Seats. Of those, 38 were equipped with White Power Tops. 3 of them came with Power Side Windows. Of these, 1 was produced with an Air Conditioner. 2F03F199740 is that Mustang. ONE OF ONE… ALL ORIGINAL ONCE AND IT IS STILL ALL ORIGINAL… Power Windows are a must. 1964-1/2 to 1970 Mustangs never had this option. Finally, in 1971 to 1973, Power Windows became a RARE option. Who wants to hand crank 4 individual windows front and rear? I don't. And you, the lucky buyer, won't either! Air Condition is a must have option too, especially if you live in Southern California, Arizona, Texas or Florida. Well, it is just nice to have no matter where you live, period. Very desirable. Robert custom ordered his Convertible with some STRANGE ideas, IMHO. I mean, it looks like a luxury Grande model with the White Top and luxury interior with the Deluxe Inner Door Grab Handles. But what is strange is that Golden Girl has the Mach 1 front grille with working amber lamps, front urethane bumper, lower matte black trim with chrome accents, and high performance Traction-Lok Rear Differential and Competition Suspension. It's almost as if Robert gave Golden Girl the soft feminine Grande touch for Carol Anne, but sneaked in sporty Mach 1 trims for him. I guess this car is the perfect compromise HIS (Mach 1) and HERS (Grande, White Top Convertible) car. Golden Girl is beautiful and graceful, yet powerful and athletic. Since she is ALL ORIGINAL, I've documented her with 100s of photos, just in case, I found a car I needed to bring to Original some day. You can see the Factory inspection marks, paint dabs, how the decals were applied, how the Mach 1 lower paint trim was applied outside and in the doors. The rubber bumpers, the electrical, everything is intact, in place and working. The odometer reads 2001 miles and climbing. I drive it once a week. People love it, honk, thumbs up and take photos of it all the time. The door service sticker says it had an oil change in 2001 at 1,575 miles. It's 2014 and she just turned 2000 miles. My grin goes cheek to cheek. I'm sure it has rolled over at least once. She purrs like a kitten, cruises at 65-75 mph with ease. Everything works. The lights, the gauges, the radio, the power top. She is just clean inside and out. The trunk is immaculate. Golden Girl has her original full size spare, a BF Goodrich SILVERTOWN in E78-14 size, seems brand new and still retains factory pink and white grease marker dabs. The jack seems unused too. How cool is that! No rust and super clean. The tonneau cover is original, date stamped 8-71, fits nice and tight. It came with a Car Cover in the trunk, which seems new and never used. The car is clean. The ash trays are clean. Non-smoker car! MYSTERY: This car has the VERY RARE special Snorkel Plastic Ducts that “RAM” fresh cold air from under the Battery Tray. This was NEVER available in 1971 and older Mustangs and first appeared in the very rare 1972 351HO Mustangs of which less than 398 were built. 1972 was the first year of the full time COLD AIR INDUCTION "Ram Air" plastic system. I have seen the snorkel and duct system for sale on EBAY by itself for about $500. 351 H.O. owners need this rare part if it is missing in their cars. This system allowed FORD to pass the Solid-Lifter 1972 351 H.O. through tough Emissions Laws in all 50 states, a feat that Chevrolet was unable to achieve for their 454 V8. By 1973, the Cold Air Induction concept went into ALL cars. However, the 1973 version is different than the 1972 version. The very RARE 1972 version has a plastic ban around the Snorkel with the Flex Duct stapled to it. I'm not sure why this system made it on this 1972 302 engine. Perhaps, it has to do something with California's NOX requirement. So, if you find this RARE ITEM on another 1972 Mustang non-351HO car, let me know. I’m curious. Anyway, this 1972 is an important part of Ford Mustang history. Anyway, as you can see, I have to sell Golden Girl. It is too rare for me. I'm a hot rod guy. I'm a restomod guy. This car needs to go to someone special or a museum of sorts, who loves and appreciates originality. I need a car that I can modify, run fast and hard to the 1/4 mile track and back. Chevrolet wanted to achieve the feel of Europe's raw track cars while Ford positioned their Thunderbird as a refined boulevard king. Now, sixty years later, first generation Corvettes are cool, but first generation Thunderbirds are more endearing. If you're looking for a hot 50s-era classic that's valuable, fun to drive and has the ability to turn Main Street into a parade route, RK Motors Charlotte is your kind of place. And if you want to be the star of that parade, this first year Thunderbird, with its 312 cubic inch V8 and modern, 5-speed transmission, is your kind of classic! Professionally restored by Prestige Thunderbird of Santa Fe Springs, California, this T-bird's lust-inducing body reflects a picturesque coat of correct Raven Black two-stage. From its glossy shine to its chip-free rocker panels, that paint's deep finish is nice enough to be the star at any local cruise night, and certainly nicer than the car's original, factory-applied pigment. Naturally, a star of that caliber requires top notch panel fit, as the folks who bolted this Ford together spent ample time making sure its bullet-like body maintained excellent cohesion. And today, this roadster is a stunning tribute to one of the coolest designs to ever fly out of Dearborn, Michigan. The Thunderbird was Ford's refined response to Chevrolet's crude Corvette. And when introduced in 1955, it outsold Chevy's newly minted halo by almost 24 to 1. Part of the reason for that big success was the car's versatile mix of American substance and European aesthetics. At the front of this 'bird, a stainless egg-crate grille rides between clean headlights, chrome-trimmed parking lamps, an intricate header emblem and a bulleted bumper that bends around peaked fenders. Between those fenders, a classy hood scoop leads the eye to a wraparound windshield that's reflected by correct chrome mirrors, cleared by small stainless wipers and framed by thick chrome trim. At the top of that trim, a Raven Black hardtop latches down over a White soft top as a part of Ford's innovative dual-roof system. Below those roofs, sculpted door handles and stainless-trimmed fender skirts perfectly complement chrome fender louvers, small "V8" emblems and glowing "Thunderbird" scripts. And at the back of those scripts, an intricate trunk emblem rides between chrome-trimmed, jet-inspired tail lights and a second wraparound bumper. Tilt this Ford's lightweight hood and you'll find a 312 cubic inch Thunderbird V8 that's been fully rebuilt and dressed to impress. Introduced in 1956, this stout little Y-block remained an option in blue oval staples well into the mid-70s. At the top of the bright orange mill, a functional hood scoop funnels wind into a mirrored and decaled air cleaner that's perched on a big Holley carburetor. Atomized octane passes through a coated intake manifold to correct, cast iron heads that are topped by polished and Thunderbird-branded valve covers. At the front of those valve covers, a modern alternator and retrofitted AC compressor spin in unison as a re-cored radiator keeps the block cool via pliable FoMoCo hoses. Spark comes courtesy of a hot Mallory distributor, which sequences fire between a fresh battery, FoMoCo voltage regulator, FoMoCo coil and High Temperature Static Suppression cables. From its glossy fenders and filtered fuel bowl to its chrome oil filler and neat "See Clear" washer bag, this roadster's bay presents a clean, highly detailed appearance. And best of all, the spry engine fires instantly and sounds surprisingly beefy breathing through ceramic coated headers and modern Bassani mufflers. At the bottom of this Thunderbird, a fully sorted undercarriage houses freshly restored floors that are bolted to a roster of proven components. Nice enough to show but still fully drivable, this is the perfect compromise for enthusiasts who like to display their car and still enjoy the occasional top-down weekend. Behind the aforementioned Y-block, a stalwart 5-speed spins power to what appears to be a traditional Ford 9-inch. The car's suspension remains in its original configuration, with control arms up front and leafs out back. Turns come courtesy of retrofitted power steering. Braking is quick and adequate thanks to power-assisted discs and drums. All of the chassis' parts feature a weather-free appearance, reinforcing the idea that it's been a very long time since this 'bird's seen daily-driver duty. And on the outside of those parts, familiar wire wheels spin 205/75R15 Coker Classic whitewalls around red-trimmed center caps. Raven Black paint is legendary for its characteristically upscale feel. And when paired with this Thunderbird's bright white roof and subtle leather interior, it creates the perfect culmination of class and sophistication. Thanks to the car's high quality restoration, its pleated bench seat is livable for years to come. There's tight carpet that, thanks to thick, color-keyed mats, features a fluffy black tint. Front and center, a translucent speedometer and small cassette player look great inside a stainless-trimmed and Thunderbird-branded dash. In the middle of the floor, a modern Mustang shifter feels both firm and precise. In front of the driver, a polished steering wheel spins a half-wrapped rim around a mirrored steering column. At the sides of the passengers, scuff-free door panels center perfectly placed armrests below pristine, engine-turned trim. And behind the soft top, a fully restored trunk hangs a Custom Autosound CD changer between an old school jack and full-size spare tire. For Ford motor company, 1955 would bring a familiar statistic that saw them once again finish 2nd behind the Chevy juggernaut, being outsold by nearly 250,000 units. However in one key demographic they did claim a huge victory Convertibles. In 1955, Ford outsold Chevrolet convertibles by over 8,000 units, selling over 49,000 convertibles to Chevrolet's 41,000. This 1955 Ford Fairlane Sunliner is a pristine example why these were the go-to choice for car enthusiasts in the late 50's. The Fairlane, which received its name from the Henry Ford estate near Dearborn, Michigan, replaced the aging Crestline as Ford's premier full size offering in 1955. This 1955 Ford Fairlane Sunliner has received a frame up restoration to sit in the current condition that you see today and is the perfect vehicle to take out on a nice warm summer day with the top down. It has received all the upgrades you would want to create a durable cruiser, while keeping the historic look of the vehicle intact. Before we get too far lets decode the VIN and body tag information. VIN/Serial number: U5LC-179017 U: 272ci 2-barrel V8. 5: 1955 L: Assembled in Long Beach, CA C: Convertible, Sunliner 179017: Production sequence Body: 76B Fairlane Sunliner convertible Color: A Raven Black Trim: L White/Red vinyl interior Production Code: 5h-215 Assembled on August 5th and 215 in the production sequence This first year Fairlane Sunliner is covered in a correct coat of Raven Black and a light shade of red. The combination that is separated by chrome trim looks fantastic under our showroom lights. At the front of the body you have the iconic look of the checkered grille that is flanked by stacked headlights resting on the front of the fender. Below the grille is a body width chrome front bumper that wraps around the front fenders. Above the grille is the Ford crest which hangs in-between a brand new hood ornament and Fairlane text. The hood leads your eyes to a wraparound front windshield. Down the sides of the body feature the signature 'check' chrome trim that separates the red and black. At the back of the car you'll notice fender skirts on the rear tire openings and the jet-tube rear taillights. Finishing off the look, the rear chrome bumper protrudes just far enough to make room for a spare tire. While this Fairlane did leave the factory with a 272 cubic inch V8, somewhere along the line someone opted to add 17 cubic inches of engine inside the Sunliner by equipping it with a 289ci small block Ford V8. The block, painted in red, accents the black engine bay quite nicely. At the top of the block, an air filter sits on top of an Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor and below that is an Edelbrock intake. The valve covers have been dressed up with Ford Racing valve covers and the air filter box has been painted to match the red on the car. Put this Fairlane on a lift and you'll see that bolted to the durable little 289 is a 3-speed automatic transmission. As far as suspension goes, the Fairlane uses a double a-arm style front suspension and a rear leaf spring suspension. Under the car you will also notice how spent gasses travel out the cast iron headers through dual exhausts that exit out the chrome tips at the back of the car. 4-wheel drum brakes are responsible for slowing the convertible. While in front of those brakes are the steel rims that have full chrome inserts wrapped in wide white wall tires. This Sunliner is impressive regardless of where you look, but the interior might just be the true winner of this ride. Open the door to this '55 Ford and you will reveal a completely restored two-tone white and black vinyl interior. The interior features two bench seats capable of comfortably hauling six people to your local car show. Up front is the new for 1955 dash design that retained the see-through "astra-dial" speedometer that made an appearance in 1954. To the right of the steering wheel are the controls for the Ford Magic Aire system and the AM radio. Luckily the previous owner upgraded the sound system with a Kenwood audio system that is somewhat hidden under the dash. The interior is comfortable and is a perfect place to log miles from with the top down. Included in the sale of this gorgeous '55 convertible is the owner's manual, spare set of keys, and manual for the upgraded stereo.
