From the original two-tone paint colors and correct trim to the untouched dash, this car exemplifies a classic 57 in its finest form. Style 1011A denotes a Delray Club Coupe, making this a very low prodcution car. Unlike the mass produced Bel Air 2 door model (166k units in '57) this 210 Delray is 1 of only 25,644 built. Better yet, this 210 Delray has some options such as the 4bbl carburator, two tone paint and Bel Air style front bumper which make it a rare 210. The final cost of this car was nearly as much as a Bel Air which tells us that the original owner probably preferred the 210 body style with its painted rear 1/4s and shortened rear fin trim. This car needs to be viewed in person to really appreciate just how nice and solid it is. The panel gaps are tight and the body lines are factory straight. The panels show true and straight down the sides and our digital paint gauge shows minimal filler throughout (see pics). The car was painted (we estimate 15 years ago) in its original two-tone colors and looks outstanding. A look inside the door frames shows the original paint in the most excellent condition (see pic of vin tag) proving the quality of the car prior to paint. We also note unusually dry and rust free paint inside the rear fuel fill area as well as inside the front fenders. Notice the upper fender bolt pictures, showing the patina and originality. You will also notice the original rubber upper hood seal. The trim is in near perfect condition, showing bright and straight from the hood darts to the window and side body trim. The windshield glass does have a hairline crack in it. The bumpers are straight and free from pitting. The doors have no sag and close crisp and tight. This car is an absolute stunner. Inward, this 57 sports her original dash and instrument cluster. Patina to last a lifetime on the optional charcoal and black dash paint. While the original Charcoal/Ivory vinyl interior was replaced with newer covers, the interior retains its original seats, dash, headliner, accessories, and is very charming. Equipped with Heat. The seats are firm, the tracks move nicely and they fold forward with ease allowing access to the rear seats. The door trim panels and all knobs are in excellent condition and the windows roll smoothly. This 210 sports an in dash clock which we believe to be an option. Under the hood is as nice as the rest of the car. The firewall retains its original paint and shows nice and dry. The 283ci turbo fire V8 is fed through a carter 4bbl carburetor with an original oil bath filter. The block is stamped CEG which denotes an over-the-counter replacement so we know this is not the original motor that came in the car off the production line. More than likely a dealer had to replace the original block with a factory replacement. The power is fed the rear wheels through the standard powerglide automatic. This hot rod chevy runs and drives great. It idles smooth and smoke free. The original wheels are pictured with 'dog dish' centers and we have the original centers (see trunk pics). The wheels are wrapped in an excellent set of cooper whitewalls. The underside (see pics) is as DRY as you will ever find for any 1957. It still has the cobwebs from the barn it had been sitting in for years. We note original dealer undercoating which has kept this 210 in phenomenally dry condition. The rails, rockers, and body mounting positions are all in unusually nice condition free or rust and damage. All floor pans are straight and dry and show nicely as well. The suspension appears correct (rear shocks replaced with air at some point) and does not show any signs of impact damage. You can see the backside of both the 1/4s and fenders are in excellent and dry condition. We do notice that the drivers side glass has a long crack through it possibly from slamming the door with the windo lowered. The window is still intact but one might consider replacing. This car is sure to turn heads and will certainly make a great addition to any collector or enthusiast. Please call for more information or pictures. On the other hand, the terrible thing about '55-'57 Chevys is that you can customize them any way you want. Truly spectacular tri-fives are much less common than their vast production numbers would suggest, but when they're as well done as this double nickel, they tend to stand out from the pack. Sure, the car's flashy Gypsy Red paint certainly helps in achieving that effect, but it is a very traditional color. And when combined with flowing sheetmetal, 50s-era trim and Shoreline Beige uppers, it goes from flashy to classically elegant. ENGINE Pop the hood and you'll find a reliable, 350 cubic inch small block that's been bored .030 over, fitted with a hot Crane cam and equipped with traditional flattop pistons. Revs are created when a chrome, bowtie-topped air cleaner floats wind in to a coated Edelbrock carburetor and aluminum Edelbrock intake. At the perimeter of that intake, 76cc heads hang hardened valve seats under chrome Edelbrock rocker covers and a bowtie-branded breather. Behind that breather, a modern HEI distributor shoots spark through loomed Moroso Super Stock plug wires. Below those wires, trick manifolds take care of spent gases while traditional V-belts spin an upgraded alternator between modern air conditioning and modern power steering. And in front of those ancillaries, a beefy Be Cool radiator fronts a giant SPAL puller fan. Despite being a thoroughly modernized piece, the Chevy Orange mill looks right at home in the car's Satin Black engine compartment. And details like a polished brake booster, a coated fuel pump and a quality CVR starter mix first-rate looks with first-rate functionality. An "autotronic eye" was offered; it was a device that bolted onto the dashboard and sensed the light from oncoming traffic, dimming the headlights automatically.[5] One unique option was an electronic shaver, connected to the dashboard.[6] The ‘57 radio used tubes that required only 12 volts of plate voltage and a transistor for the output stage. This lowered the power drain on the battery to an insignificant amount when the engine was off. Playing the radio with conventional tubes for extended periods occasionally drained the battery to the extent that it could not start the car. The clock was electrically self-wound and moving the hands to correct the time resulted in actually regulating the going rate. After a few corrections, the clock was remarkably accurate. Another dashboard-mounted item was the traffic-light viewer, a ribbed plastic visor that was installed just above the speedometer. Because the roof extends so far forward of the driver, it is hard to see overhead traffic lights. The traffic light viewer captured the reflection of overhead traffic lights so that the driver didn't have to lean forward to see past the edge of the roof. A/C was also an option.[7] In 1957, Chevrolet started to add safety features such as "crash proof door locks[8] "(first added in 1956), padded dash boards, safety-styled steering wheel with a recessed hub[9] (though not as much as Ford's), seat belts(also first in 1956[10]) and shoulder harnesses.[11][12] However, unlike Ford, Chevrolet did not promote these safety features heavily. 1957 was also Chevrolet's first offering of a turbine transmission, known as the Turboglide. It was a design concept that Buick had developed with their Dynaflow transmission. The main cause of the sales shift to Ford was the fact the '57 Chevrolet had tubeless tires, the first car to have them. This scared away sales to Ford as many people did not initially trust the new tubeless design. Also Ford's introduction of an all-new body styling that was longer, lower, and wider than the previous year's offerings helped Ford sales.[15] However, the 1957 Ford — with the exception of the rare retractable hardtop model — is not nearly as prized by collectors today as the 1957 Chevrolet. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the '57 Chevrolet was a popular used car and highly prized "street machine" or hot rod in 1957 terms. It was the final year of the "shoebox" Chevrolet, as 1958 saw the introduction of a much larger and heavier "X" framed Chevrolet. The ideal size of the '57, combined with its relatively light weight compared to newer full-sized cars, made it a favorite among drag racers. The engine bay was big enough to fit GM's big-block engines, first introduced in 1958 and popularized in the 1960s by the Beach Boys in the song "409". The relatively simple mechanical attributes of the car made it easy to maintain, customize, and upgrade with components such as disc brakes and air conditioning. The big block, however, was not what put the '57 on the map on the street scene; it was the introduction and the over-the-counter, low-priced availability of the small block, 365 horsepower 327 in 1962 that was the blockbuster that made both the '55 and '57 Chevrolet able to beat the Ford hotrods with their flathead V8s. This was a major turning point in American hot rodding: Chevrolet had claimed the street scene from Ford. The '57 Chevrolet also won 49 Grand National "cup" NASCAR races (the most of any car in NASCAR history), won the Southern 500 (in 1957, 1958, and 1959); becoming the only car to win the 500 three times. The earliest victory for a '57 Chevrolet in a titled NASCAR Grand National Series race was the 1957 Virginia 500; a race that was shortened due to an extremely flagrant accident. The '57 also won 25 NASCAR convertible races, more than any car and won all three possible drivers championships. After the '57 was grandfathered out from the now "cup" division in 1960 and relegated to the lower local track sportsman divisions they were the car to beat for years. The '57's subsequently were used up in stock car racing at a very high rate. Surprisingly enough, the '57 Chevrolet also won a disproportionate amount of demolition derbies as well: With the radiator set back from the grille, the car was difficult to disable. The additional advantage of having the last double lined trunk, coupled with a strong frame, made it a surprisingly common winner in the demolition derbies during the late 1960s and early 1970s. In the early 1990s, the value of meticulously restored '57 Chevrolet convertibles was as high as $100,000. Though those peaks gave way significantly after 1992, the '57 Chevrolet has held its value and now is poised to exceed the previous peak. Restored, original examples are increasingly rare, and modern customizers and restorers are creating fast, powerful, ultra-modern hot rods that are winning the '57 Chevrolet a whole new generation of fans.
