Mustang production for the 1966 model year began in Dearborn and San Jose on August 1965, and in Metuchen on August 25 1965. For 1966, the Mustang again was offered in three body styles coupe, convertible, and fastback. The Mustang design was not changed much for 1966. The grille design changed a bit - the honeycomb grille was replaced by a horizontal bar design, and the vertical and horizontal bars extending from the running poly corral were dropped. The bright hood lip moulding introduced with the 1965 Mustang GT package became standard, as did backup lights and the lower rocker panel moulding. Redesigned side mirror, side scoop chrome trim with three windsplits (coupe and convertible only), wheel covers, and a restyled gas cap completed the exterior changes. On the interior, the instrument panel was redesigned with five round gauges, replacing the panel borrowed from the Ford Falcon for previous model years; the glove box door was redesigned, and the standard vinyl seat design was changed to a "woven" pattern. "Ran when parked in the barn." Appears to be complete, was blocked up and stored for over twenty-two years, with the tires and wheels removed. Clear Indiana title. A work in progress. If you are looking for a solid tropical turquoise car to restore with an Oklahoma DSO, this is it. The Oklahoma City sales area also included Tulsa the Texas panhandle, including Amarillo and Lubbock, as I understand it. The O code paint was only available on a Mustang this one year. It was not available on the 1964 1/2 cars. According to the ISOM registry, there were only around 70 accounted as the time of the survey about 20 years ago, and that included wrecking yard finds that likely no longer exist. Tropical Turquoise is the only paint name color I can find that General Motors and Ford had in common. You will find many 50's Chevies with it, both cars and trucks. I know, you either love it or hate it, but in my opinion, this Mustang needs to go back to its original tropical color. At present the original tropical is visible under the carpets and in other places that were missed in a later red repaint. Red is what you see it on it today until I can get around to putting it back to O code. Based upon ISOM findings, a tropical turquoise O code paint pony is the least common to survive of the stock factory paint codes used for 1965 on the Mustang except for I (Champaign Beige). It runs about equal with code 7, Phoenician Yellow. [Note: One of the neat things about 60's Fords were the number of special paint orders that could and did take place. Ford colors from other car lines such as Thunderbird or Galaxie could be custom-ordered for a Mustang, and there was a corporate sales chart with a rainbow of one-off colors if you did not find what you liked in the Mustang sales brochures.] As you know, April 17 that just passed was the introduction date for the Ford Mustang back fifty years ago, and the early production had started on March 9, 1964. Cars shipped to dealers were kept under wraps, and it was a nifty introduction, with depowered cars used in the Ford pavillion at the New York World's Fair, and later brought back to the factory, rebuilt, and sold to the public. A car was taken apart and displayed on the observation deck of the Empire State Building, at that time the tallest building in the world. The way the car was introduced created a sensation, and set many standards for subsequent marketing campaigns across multiple product lines. There was a shortage of vehicles available for sale, and waiting lists developed which had not happened in the automobile industry since around 1953, when the "big three" finally caught up with pent-up post war demand that had built while automobile manufacturers had been converted to military production only. Originally produced only at Dearborn, as this car was, two additional plants were converted at least partially to Mustang building to keep up with the buying frenzy, the Edison, New Jersey plant, which is now gone, and the Milpitas, California plant, which has now been converted into a shopping mall [a few rare Mustangs eventually also received final assembly in three other locations...Mexico, Australia, and a handful in Europe]. Today, Mustangs are no long assembled at Dearborn either, but at another suburban location south of Detroit. There have been many books written about the people behind the Mustang at Ford, and the processes that were developed in coming up with the brand and the original design. Ford had just come off a big write-off on the Edsel, and management was not anxious to make another costly mistake. The T-5 program, as it was then called within the Ford inner circles, was finally green-lighted in 1962, and the rest, as they say, is history. Those involved became heroic, often iconic figures. Many have said the development of the middle class in the United States gave rise to the demand for second cars, and others have commented that the GI's coming home from the Korean and World Wars were ready for something new. There were several currents ebbing and flowing in the ocean of car building, one was the muscle car movement, where bigger engines were being stuffed into smaller platforms, like Pontiac's Tempest, which was crammed with horsepower and morphed into a GTO sub-model. Another was the coming fuel efficiency movement, where families began opting for something less than the ever longer ever wider ever humongously thirsty family four door sedan. Ford hit the nail on the head by offering any number of options, engine sizes, transmission packages, colors, and decor combinations. The long-hood/short trunk styling started the "pony car" movement. It was a monster at Ford, and like McDonald's hamburger signs, production numbers kept setting new records, with over half a million sold in the extended model year. This particular example was Michigan-assembled in January 1965 was found in 2014 with a 4-V carburetor. The engine runs but needs a carb rebuild, now being addressed. The engine oil, transmission fluid, and radiator coolant have been drained and refreshed. The fuel system has been cleaned. Braking system has been gone through and brakes work. Floors, rockers, and torque boxes solid and intact. The doors look good, with no visible rust in the corners or on the bottoms. The data plate is intact, although it has been painted over. The VIN number on the inner fender matches the title and the door data plate. There is a little corner damage on the passenger side front corner of the hood. Driver's front fender has a cut spot behind the corner of the bumper. Trunk lid roof and doors have no visible damage. Slight bit of bondo in the driver's side rear trunk drop-down. Mileage not verified, but looks appropriate for the number of years of storage. Wheels are after market, and tires are not safe to drive on due to their age. They do hold air. You may inspect this car in Indiana, just south of Chicago. I will be happy to post any photos you might want on my website. Offering for sale as-is-as-priced for a short period of time, but anticipating a restoration will be starting in the near future. $100 reward for previous ownership information and/or confirmation of which Oklahoma DSO dealership might have originally sold this car in early 1965. It could have come out of Oklahoma or the Texas panhandle. There could not have been too many new tropical turquoise Mustangs galloping around Oklahoma or the Texas panhandle, early in 1965. I will sell the car as-is, or I will consider subcontracting a partial or total restore to your specifications. The listed price is for the vehicle as-is-where-is on rolling tires and old aftermarket rims. It seems pretty original other than the paint job and the rims. This particular example of the early 1965 was found with a 4-V carburetor in a bucket, in a million pieces. The engine can be hand turned and is free. I have no idea if the power train is original, but it likely is, based upon appearances. On a 50 year old vehicle though, it is difficult to tell. The engine oil, transmission fluid, and radiator coolant has been drained and refreshed this week. There is still some bad gas in the fuel tank, but the tank is intact and the fuel pump will operate when the engine is turned. The car currently has a inoperable braking system. I doubt that it would take much to get it running, but I offer no warranties. There is no battery in the car, and I have not tested the wiring as of yet, but I see no apparent damage from what I have observed so far. The floors, rockers, and torque boxes appear to be solid and intact. The passenger side rear quarter looks pretty good, with one pencil-sized rust hole in the bottom of the trunk drop-down. The driver's side rear quarter panel looks to have some bondo in the lower portion of it. The doors look good, with no visible rust. The door data plate is intact, although it has been painted over. The VIN number on the fender skirt matches the title and the door data plate. I cannot verify the mileage, but the existing reading looks appropriate for the number of years it was stored. The passenger side front fender looks good, with no issues. The driver's side front fender has two issues. First, the front bumper at some time in the past appears to have contacted the sheet metal, punching a hole. Secondly, there is a rust hole under the bottom of the rear portion of the fender, just ahead of the door. This tends to indicate that at some point there was a problem with stoppage of water flow in the lower portion of the inner fender. I have not been able yet to inspect the cowl areas thoroughly, but I do not expect any serious problems, otherwise the floors would likely have gotten rotted. There are no visible dents in the roof or trunk area. There are no obvious signs of accidents other than the left front fender issue. There is a ding in the front corner of the hood, on the passenger side. The trunk lid and rear panels look good, and the glass looks good all around. The brightwork and trim looks like all it needs is a good polishing. You may feel free to inspect this car in Indiana. We are about 1 hour north of Indy or about 1 hour south of Chicago on I-65. I will be happy to post any photos you might want on my website. This Mustang is going in for restoration sometime in June or July as soon as the shop has an opening. As a result I only offer this for a short period of time. I am also offering a $100 reward if you have any information about what Oklahoma area dealership might have originally sold this car in January or February 1965. There could not have been too many new tropical turquoise Mustangs galloping around Oklahoma, the Texas panhandle, or southern Kansas early in 1965. I have a gut feeling that the car might have been sold to a military service person who later transferred east or sold the car before going on overseas duty. If you might have been an earlier owner, Ford salesman, or know anything about the ownership history prior to it coming to Michigan and later Indiana, I would very much appreciate hearing from you. Well, as the Elite Marti Report breaks it down, it is a 1 of 1 car. There were only 1,044 of the R code Mustangs built in 1968. Only 706 had the 4 speed manual, which let%26acirc;??s be honest, you have to have in a muscle car! Just 13 of them were this color, and of those only 5 had this color interior. This is the only one of those with the 3.50:1 posi rear end! This is the only one ever built with those options. It doesn%26acirc;??t get any more rare than that. You are bidding on one of the most original very early mustangs to still exist. Just returned from the 50th anniversary mustang show in NC, this is the only 1st week mustang besides #1 to still have all of it\'s original date coded sheet metal making it super rare. Partial trade + cash possible There are a lot of misconceptions about 64 1/2 Mustangs so read on. There are very few mustangs that are known with earlier serial numbers and most of them are missing some of the original sheet metal or other parts that can not be replaced. Little is known about 1st gen 64-66 mustang production as ford has no records, what is known is that during the first week of official production 867 cars were produced, 1955 cars were produced in the 2nd week. soon after they were making as many as 1200 cars per day, so you can see why 1st week cars are hardly ever seen or for sale. if you have 5.5 million dollars you can buy convertible #212. 121,538 total 1964 1/2 mustangs produced. The majority of 64 mustangs were F code 260 v8, also available D code 289, K code 289, and U code 170 6 cyl. All 64 1/2 mustangs have these engine codes. all 64 1/2 mustangs were produced before aug. of 64 when they rounded up the vins to 250000 for detroit cars, and 125000 for R cal. cars. so if you see a vin over 250000 it is not a 64. There were approx. 180-210 pre production cars starting with 100001 in the ford museum, no one knows for sure as most of these cars are long gone, these cars are coded 05C march 5th, the official production started on march 9th we know #212 was produced on this day, the 30 or so cars before this have never been accounted for. There are no matching #\'s cars in 64-66, ford did not put vins on the engine until 67 so you have to know what you are looking for, the V8\'s have build dates on the block and should be around 2 to 4 weeks before the build date of the car so ask the buyer if you are buying an F or D code, K code cars do have the vin on the block. If you are investing in a 64-66 mustang you should buy the book, Collector\'s originality guide Mustang 64 1/2 -66 by Colin Date, many color pics and info. Windshield and rear window were removed and all new rubber, clips and new stainless trim. Heater box is completely rebuilt with new rubber and core. The engine has been rebuilt with a newer head that is hardened to run on unleaded fuel, starts right up runs great, no smoke at all. New rebuilt generator and wire harness. Complete new exhaust system. All new brake system including master cyl., all rubber lines, all steel lines, wheel cylinders, pads, bearing seals and all..... drums are original and in great shape. although the steel lines looked OK I replaced them due to the fact that brake fluid collects moisture and on cars that are almost 50 years old they corrode from the inside, so make sure if you are buying an old mustang that the lines have been replaced. Suspension was gone through and only needed drivers side inner tie rod replaced but went ahead and replaced inner and outer tie rods on both sides. sway bar bushings and end links replaced. Checked ball joints upper driver side had a tiny bit of movement so I replaced it all the rest are very tight. Idler arm was tight but looked original so I replaced it with a new one, I leave nothing to chance when I restore a car. everything was greased and all fluids replaced. Pinion seal replaced. Bottom was water pressure blasted which removed most of the old seam sealer. new seam sealer was put on in as much of a factory application as possible. undercoating was put back on same as factory but not as thick. the rest of the floor and bottom was painted in semi-gloss rustoleum just a thin coat to protect it. Front fenders are completely painted and undercoated on the back side, done while off the car. Front fender splash shields replaced and new rubber. cowl is amazingly rust free and even more amazing zero rust on the window frames not even surface rust, first one I have ever seen like this. Most all new chrome including bumpers, quarter trim is nos, taillights and trim are nos. New gas tank with correct hose and clamps. All the nuts and bolts are original or replaced with the correct new ones. New tar paper behind door panels. New under carpet kit which has more panels than the factory including one that sits on top of the gas tank. More new parts I can not recall. Plus extra parts like Gen., 2 fuel pumps, volt reg., and more. As a testiment to how well this car was cared for over the years, I left the driveshaft alone which still has the original white and red stripe on it, the parking brake adjuster still has the original ford tag on it, and the seats are still original, only a car that has been garaged would be like this. First and formost all sheet metal should be date coded before build date, if not the value of the car drops. Square end door sills Angled headlight buckets Downturned hood edge Hood should have small dimples and no holes for trim ( very early hoods had no dimples ) Very early door have no grommet on door lock molded with smaller hole Hood bumpers have recessed phillips screw Large horns mounted low on the frame behind the radiator Front turn signal lights have solid retainer buckets no slot 3 slots on radiator support in front of battery Spare tire mounting bracket is a slot for a carriage bolt No tire jacking instruction label on trunk lid Wheels 13\" 4 lugs on 170 CID, and 5 lug on V8 were standard equipment Fuel and brake line clamps are screwed to floor, not clipped Headlights early 64.5 headlights have raised FoMoCo script Rear quarter extension does not have the channel for the rubber seal Hood Hinges black not natural metal look Engine Compartment bracket between inner fender apron and cowl cover have extra vertical tab Dash pad frame extensions are screwed on in very early cars Gas cap without retaining cable Windshield wiper arm has smooth cap instead of flanged Door beltline weather strip felt backing is black not chrome Gas fill tube hose has special clamps without screws Seat riser pans on early coupes have a big cutout in them - and were changed to solid pans early in the 64.5 production. Vent knob Driver\'s side has white \"A\" on it. Trunk mat is speckled burtex in hardtops, and rubber plaid in convertibles Pedal Pads clutch, brake and gas pedal pads do not have indentation around edge Lock knob different and painted interior color Instrument cluster has \"GEN\" warning light instead of \"ALT\".
