This truck is the famous MAN MADE LEGENDS Shop Truck, built back when original owner John Sad was still at the helm of the NC Hot Rod and Restoration Specialist. If you’ve read a rod, Kulture, or customizing magazine in the last few years, you’ll surely recognize the name, as both the original team and the new owners have managed to turn out some of the koolest rides this side of the Mississippi over the years. This particular truck is a melding of classic old patina style and aging techniques combined with a quality build out to create a truck that is reliable and fun to drive, but with all the crazy appeal of a “Rat Rod” on top of it. The first thing that gets you is the appearance. It looks like it has been sitting in the back 40 for 50 years, and seems like it would blow away in a dust of rust with a strong wind, but on closer inspection you realize that it is a real, solid, steel body that has been painstakingly customized to LOOK old! How they do it is a shop secret, but take a look at all of the large photos I have provided and you will see that the truck has about as perfect a patina as you could get outside of Mother Nature. The patina treatment extends from the body to the chassis, to most of the components on the car, and even goes under the hood to the carefully treated engine and engine bay! From the inside out, and front to back, this truck gives off an appearance like it has sat outside since Henry Ford built it! Grab a magnet, and you’ll be amazed at how solid everything is, and how much effort was put into making sure all the doors, hood, and other parts lined up and fit. No bondo patches, no chicken wire, no crushed up beer cans… just Henry steel combined with a vivid imagination and extremely talented fabrication and finish work. Wood bed rails, bed floor, and fuel tank cover are all solid wood, and each plank was carefully treated and aged to make sure it didn’t look out of place on the truck. Real Surf Boards grace the top of the roof, and are bolted, screwed, and strapped into place to keep them intact on high-speed runs from Johnny Law. Original windshield visor is intact, and the windshield moves fore and aft to let additional ventilation in. Hood has functional aged leather straps in place to “hold it down”, but in reality, the front latch and attachment screw for the belt makes sure NO ONE steals a glance at the engine bay unless you want them to. Chrome mirrors on each side of the truck provide good views for the driver, and are practically the only bit of shiny bright stuff on the truck! Wheels are perfectly aged as well, and wrapped in BF GOODRICH Silverstone wide white wall bias-ply tires that have been purposefully NOT kept clean to go with the rest of the rides look. Everything from the suspension front and rear was purposefully aged and patina finished to keep the look going as well, but as you can see in the pictures, it is all clean, solid, and fully functional beneath it all. Custom striping throughout the truck looks amazing, and has been carefully aged as well so it doesn’t stick out. All of the logos and striping are hand-painted and look perfect on the truck! Everything from the rear bumper, hardware gate chains, lights, even the Coca-Cola bottle opener on the right rear of the bed… were all PURPOSEFULLY aged so that they fit the look and feel of the entire build. Back of the cab has a wood-framed license plate holder, but it does NOT have a plate light, so if your State requires one on classic cars, plan accordingly. The only other bit of chrome on the truck appears to be the vintage Chrome Lady lying on the fuel tank over. She is bolted down to keep thieving hands at bay! Rear glass has a little crack in it, but the windshield is crack and issue free. Chassis is primarily stock style components, which have all been aged accordingly in appearance, but function quite well. Drum brakes all around stop the truck with ease, and with a minimal amount of feedback to the driver. Shocks and springs work together nicely to provide a good ride, and you won’t chatter your teeth out on a highway cruise or rolling over a speed bump. A Ford 302CI V8 of unknown origin rests under the hood, and is a very mild stock build, with no radical internal components, mostly stock parts inside and out, a complete absence of billet and chrome, and a perfectly done patina on everything from the air cleaner to the block. It dripped a couple of drops after driving on the shop floor, so we tightened the oil and trans pan bolts and it stopped. Other than that, it is leak, weep, and drip free. It is not a smoker, and has no known issues at this time. It starts right up, idles cleanly, and appears to be tuned very well. Again, this is NOT a radically built motor. It was kept as close to stock as possible for reliability, ease of maintenance, and problem-free ownership. You can get practically anything the trucks powertrain needs at your local auto parts store, and it is a perfect vehicle for someone who lacks mechanical ability because ANY local garage can work on it for you. It is mated to a Ford 3-speed automatic transmission with a basically stock configuration, no shift kit, and no stall converter. It shifts smooth and easy in all gears, and combined with the smoothed 9” FORD rear end and its 3.73 gearing, provides more than manageable cruising speed to get you around town and to the next show. They even added weld bumps to the rear axle to make it look like it would have if someone narrowed it back in the day! This is NOT an Interstate cruising Power Tour car, but it is perfectly suited to cruise at 55mph and head to the next town for cruise night. Cooling system is a stock set-up, with a larger radiator and bigger fan. It stays cool when cruising, and lays at about 194 degrees when driving it. Get stopped for longer than 10 minutes in one place, like I did heading to the Island in it, and she will reach about 210 degrees, but quickly drops back down the second you start moving. All in all, a pretty cool running little machine considering the fact it doesn’t carry an auxiliary electric fan on board! I have had the pleasure of cruising this truck about 60 miles total, and it is a BLAST to drive! Drive. That is an important word, because between the bias ply tires and stock style suspension you actually need to DRIVE this thing! No time for selfies or using the rear-view to pretend you’re Caitlyn Jenner…it is all gas, brake, steer, and go with this machine! It is so much fun to drive, and you will be amazed at the attention it gets! All of the lights work, including headlamps, tail lamps, and signals. The interior of the truck is just as radical as the exterior, and has so much going on if you blink you’ll miss something! Aluminum aircraft bomber seats have been properly aged and fit with a burlap/boat vinyl seat cushion for comfort and protection from the elements. Floor is all steel with exposed rivets, and all of it has been acid-etched and painted with rustoleum for looks and protection. Door panels, kick panels, and rear panel are all covered in bamboo shade material, which not only looks great, but keeps with the “Water? No problem!” them of the interior! Steering wheel is a vintage something, and looks super cool while providing more than enough acreage to steer this beast with. Dash is original, with original center pod, but the key switch has been done away with in favor of a switch and push-button starting procedure. Vintage turn signal control box is mounted on the stock-style column. Center console was custom made, and housed the custom made shifter and housing. The gauge pod unit was created from a block of wood that was custom worked to hold the gauges for Speedometer/Odometer, OIL, TEMP, FUEL, and VOLTS. Everything seems to be working as it should, except for the Speedo, which the prior owner said needs a cable attached between it and transmission. Column mounted Tachometer is functional and looks great too. Control panel on lower left of dash houses switchgear for the truck, and works like it should. Doors shut tight, and the wood-topped levers open and close them solid and surely. This is NOT a back-yard built junker that you can’t even take down the block. This is a PRO-BUILT rod that was made to look old and ratty, but is extremely clean, solid, and well-constructed when you get past the paint. I have had a blast driving it out to the Island for a cruise night, and just zipping around town in it, and find it to be about as fun to drive as you could ask for. People absolutely LOVE IT. Men, women, old, young… it seems like everyone wants to take a picture with it, admire how nice it is once they get up close and really start examining it. In the case of William Durant and the Durant Motor Car company, the story runs equal with the quality of car produced. We’ve seen it many times where the innovators of the automobile industry get sick of making the Big Three rich and want to do things their way. A way they think is better with no government regulations. We’ve heard the story of Tucker and DeLorean, but a story that often gets dismissed is the story of William Durant. He spent his life in the automobile industry and at one point wanted to purchase Ford Motor Co. He’s owned massive amounts of Buick, Oldsmobile and Cadillac and worked to put those companies on the map. He finally got to the point where he wanted to do it on his own. Back in those days, there were people like that, that had balls the size of grapefruits and taking a risk was as common as coming your hair in the morning. He went to battle in the early 1920’s with the Big Three and Ford and started to build and market cars to the people that had all kinds of income and expectations. There were base cars and expensive cars. Durant wanted to make cars better, safer, more luxurious and more reliable than any other car maker. He became a success but before the Durant Motor Car was household name the crash of 29 hit and the great depression was too much for Durant to persevere through and by early 30’s, the Durant was no longer. This 1920 Willys Overland was recently removed out of a collection of cars that housed all these late teens to early 30’s automobiles. This car was restored years ago and still presents great. Every curve, relief, and molding is as the factory did it. The deck lid is fiberglass, and is the only non-metal body part on the whole car. The pointed nose is beautifully fabricated from scratch, using aluminum and stainless steel to create a unique beak for this incredible car that’s both traditional and all-new. The rest of the nose, including the hood sides, top, and fairings along the chassis are hand-formed aluminum for minimum weight and punched full of louvers to both help with cooling and to allow the air to pass around and through the car as easily as possible. Gunslinger wears a spectacular black paint job, and there is not a single ripple, wave, or patch of orange peel anywhere on the car. Suggesting a huge amount of time was invested in getting all that hand-fabricated bodywork super straight. It’s got an old-school vibe with leather windlace between the panels, and quick-release fasteners hold all of the fairings in place, so you can have almost instant access to any of the car’s mechanicals. All fits together exquisitely well. The whole idea behind Gunslinger was to merge the design ethos of the classic Model T track roadster with craftsmanship that borders on art without losing sight of tradition. Deitz headlights perched on their own beautiful little stands, the chrome windshield stanchions holding a beautifully shaped cut-down windshield that actually does work to keep things pleasant inside, and the ’39 Ford taillights that are as minimalist as you can get without losing all sense of style. Then there are the functional bits like the scoop under the nose that actually force-feeds cool air into the radiator, the cool reverse scoops in the side panels that look like the exhaust ports on a Mustang P51 fighter plane but actually add clearance for the headers, and the exposed steering mechanism that’s the essence of simplicity. Out back, there are neat little push bars that replicate those used on salt flats racers for decades, and while they probably don’t offer much protection, they do give it a finished look. The interior is again a nod to the past, with distressed-looking gray/green leather that might have been weathered by the sun and elements back in the ‘50s. It’s nicely fitted to a fresh bench seat that’s contoured just right so even real-sized human beings can fit behind the wheel and enjoy the drive. Pleated door panels use brass rifle bolts as door latch handles and check straps for a vintage look and there are carpets on the floor, which definitely help control noise and heat. The trunk is outfitted with a modern fuel cell for safety and aircraft-quality fuel lines feeding the small block V8 up front. Gunslinger is fitted with a ZZ3 Chevrolet 350 cubic inch V8 with aluminum heads and a wicked Comp Cams “Mother Thumper” roller camshaft inside and a big Demon carburetor on top. With more than 400 horsepower on tap and a full-race idle that cackles and snorts, this car sounds like a predator. This much horsepower in a package that weighs perhaps 1700 pounds is shockingly fast and in the first two gears, anything more than half throttle will result in massive wheel spin and a cacophony of exhaust pulses. The Muncie 4-speed manual gearbox has the right ratios to make the most of the engine’s minimal inertia and it’s a joy to bang it through the gears in fury, as the car seems to beg for more every time you punch a shift. The exhaust system was completely hand-fabricated with special “noise boxes” and mufflers to create just the right sound. The front suspension is traditional hot rod fare, with a dropped I-beam axle, hairpin trailing arms, and stubby shocks, but it’s set up right so it’s not twitchy at speed and tracks like a cruise missile on the highway. In back, it’s a little different, offering a vintage independent suspension, and with drum brakes on either end it’s got to be from a ’63 or ’64 ‘Vette. Gunslinger sits on 1937 Ford “wide five” artillery wheels, fully restored and powdercoated black and shod with big-n-little Firestone dirt track tires that give it the perfect stance. Only 6 in the entire exsistance of Shleby's were built and this car has never been driven on the track and is at miles when new. Important Notation: From 65-67 Carroll Shelby had Ford deliver him mustangs for his modifications. 68-69 Ford moved Shelby production to Michigan assembly line with minimal Shelby involvement. As a result the 65-67 cars are worth more. Today the customer buys the mustang and delivers it the Shelby for the mods. That was true until a couple years ago now Shelby sends customer to Shelby licensed mod shops and dealers. Shelby does very few mods in house anymore. That may change with new Shelby president Gary who is true car guy. What all this may mean for values is that the new 2015-16 GT 350s are Ford mustangs badged by Ford with the Shelby name. Just like a 2008 GT 500. So 2008 super snakes are worth much more then a GT 500. Most Shelby purists consider a car that is hand built at Shelby factory to have most appreciation potential. As opposed to cars where Ford bought the rights to the Shelby name and affixed it to their mustang. In other words the argument is that "real" Shelbys are built at Shelby factory and less real or faux Shelbys are badged by Ford similar to 68-69 Shelby mustangs, 2015-16 GT 350s. The Prudhomme Edition Mustang drag snake is different than any high-performance Mustang you've ever seen. It is surely a Shelby GT500 Super Snake with features that place it in a league all by itself.
