Well, this is it. Beautifully finished, this 1937 Ford slantback 2-door sedan shows off what the ideal combination of modifications and style can do to what was once just a transportation appliance. OK, so nobody will ever accuse the 1937 Fords of being ugly, so that's probably why the guys who built this one left the sheetmetal alone. No chopped top, no radical de-trimming, and no outrageous paint job, just clean, honest Ford steel in the original shape. Of course, fit and finish are worlds beyond what Henry could manage in 1937, even if he were willing to spend the money to get it to this level. Look closely and you'll note a few mods, including the shaved hood ornament and smooth deck lid, but nothing that immediately jumps out as a custom touch. The body was smoothed and finished to a very high standard before several coats of luscious black basecoat went on, followed by a few layers of clear for an impossibly deep shine. While they were at it, they gave the grille a coat of the same stuff, and you'll love how it highlights the body's subtle creases and curves. A simple band of stainless trim highlights the curves of the bodywork and the bumpers were tucked in tight for a smoother look. The interior is the kind of place that you'd be happy to spend a weekend or more, thanks to comprehensive upgrades that make it as comfortable as a modern luxury car. The front are beautiful low-back tan buckets, and in back the original bench has been retained. Upholstery is tan leather so its bright and airy with a strong sense of style and it's plenty comfortable for long-distance cruising. The original dash has been reworked, and the stock instrument panel has given way to a billet insert with modern VDO dials for all the major systems. A powerful A/C system is so neatly integrated that you'll have a hard time believing that Ford wasn't building them this way in 1937. A gorgeous leather-rimmed banjo-style steering wheel lives atop a tilt column and that billet aluminum shift lever links to a 700R4 4-speed automatic transmission. Under that slanting deck lid, you'll find a surprisingly spacious trunk with a cleverly disguised battery box and neatly finished tan carpets. The engine is a Chevy 350 cubic inch V8, so you know it's powerful and reliable out on the road. Fully dressed with lots of chrome, this will be part of the reason for the crowd forming around this car. A big Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor atop a polished intake is a time-tested combination, and the dual exhaust system was built as much for sound as for performance, because this car sounds amazing. The front suspension is a familiar dropped I-beam with disc brakes, while out back there's a 9-inch Ford hanging on leaf springs. The quality of the workmanship is evident everywhere you look, and it has not been driven much since it was completed, so even the chassis is bright, shiny, and clean. Even the polished Torque Thrust wheels and fat rubber don't seem to show much use at all. Expertly engineered and beautifully finished, this is the car you've been dreaming about adding to your collection. Look closely and you'll note a few mods, including Vee'd windshield and blue dot taillights, but given how good it looks, you won't get more attention with radical modifications. The body was smoothed and finished to a very high standard before several coats of black paint went on, which gives it an appropriate look. It's got a few signs of use and age, but if you appreciate the classic look and just want to update the driving experience, this is your car. The interior is the kind of place that you'd be happy to spend a weekend or more, thanks to comprehensive upgrades that make it as comfortable as a modern luxury car. The front seats are custom gray leather buckets and in back the original bench has been retained and covered in the same stuff, so it's bright and airy with a strong sense of style. Gorgeous custom door panels are attractive and functional, but not over-done, so they work rather well with the rest of the car. The original dash has been painted to match the bodywork and the stock instrument panel has given way to a trio of gorgeous gauges from VDO. A powerful A/C system, eyeball vents, and an AM/FM/CD stereo head unit are fitted into the center of the dah, and it's so neatly integrated that you'll have a hard time believing that Ford wasn't building them this way in 1937. A late-model GM steering wheel lives atop a tilt column and aside from some light stains on the custom floor mats, it looks quite fresh. Under that slanting deck lid, you'll find a surprisingly spacious trunk that's fully upholstered and includes a space-saver spare with its own custom cover. The engine is a 350 cubic inch Chevrolet V8, so you know it's powerful and reliable out on the road. Fully dressed with lots of chrome, this will be part of the reason for the crowd forming around this car. A Edelbrock 4-barrel carburetor atop an aluminum intake manifold is a time-tested combination, and the dual exhaust system was built as much for sound as for performance, because this car sounds amazing. The front suspension is a Mustang II type setup with disc brakes and rack-and-pinion steering, while out back there's an 8-inch axle hanging on leaf springs. The quality of the workmanship is evident everywhere you look, and the fact that it's been driven and enjoyed means that it's all sorted out and ready to enjoy. Shiny billet aluminum wheels are a classic look and they're wrapped in sensibly-sized 215/75/15 rubber, so it rides well and doesn't rub on sharp turns, which is always important if you're actually going to drive your rod. Expertly engineered and nicely finished, this is the car you've been dreaming about driving this summer. You see a lot of '32-34-36 rods running around, but the '35s, with their own distinctive grille and handsome styling that's similar to the '36, make fantastic cruisers, too. This bright red tudor sedan is an all-steel car with a fresh build and the kind of detailing that'll take you a long time to see, so plan on settling in a while as you look at the photos. Amazing what a coat of paint can do, right? This Ford carries unmodified bodywork, including the roof, which still has a fabric insert. Every square inch of it was drenched in bright red paint, so it sure isn't subtle, but the workmanship is worthy of a high-end restoration and looks simply fantastic in person. The shape is completely as Ford intended, but the little stuff is what makes this car special. Note the painted grille, which neatly bridges the '34 and '36 designs, the delicate creases that run down the centers of the fenders, and the cool stainless rub strips on the steel running boards, keeping them functional as well as beautiful. The paint is two-stage urethane that was professionally sprayed and buffed to give it a spectacular show-worthy look and the detailing around the body moldings is exceptionally crisp, suggesting a lot of hand labor. Pedestal taillights are original and just too pretty to be replaced by some aftermarket things, and the dipped bumpers are the way Henry made them, too. Acres of tan leather creates an elegant and sporty interior with all the amenities. Bucket seats flank a custom-made "floating" center console and the full-width back seat is still fully usable for family-style cruising. The hides are in almost unmarked condition and the matching door panels are simple, beautiful, and expertly finished. Stylish gauges from Classic Instruments have a very art-deco look that seems right, especially in the bright red dashboard and the vents for the Vintage Air A/C system are nicely integrated into the design. Other features include power windows, a tilt steering column with leather-wrapped wheel, and power seats up front. Dark carpets are the right choice and look upscale with the tan leather piping, and even the matching floor mats look expensive. A powerful AM/FM/CD stereo includes a remote control so it can stay out of sight and preserve the clean-looking custom dash. Smooth, reliable power in the form of a 350 cubic inch Chevy V8 lives under the custom 3-piece hood. There's nothing radical, just solid, proven mechanicals that'll get you where you want to go. Edelbrock supplied a 4-barrel carb and intake, there are block-hugging headers, and the accessory drive is pulled in tightly to the block to fit in the narrow engine bay. The color-matched finned valve covers and chrome air cleaner add some showy details, and as you can see in the photos, just about everything is new with just test and tune miles. The chassis includes things like an A-arm front suspension, TH350 3-speed automatic transmission, and a 9-inch Ford rear end with 3.08 gears inside, so it's easy to drive and comfortable on the road. Right-sized Torque Thrust wheels give it a bit of a rake and carry 215/50/17 front and 225/50/18 rear performance rubber. At this price, there's just no way this car could be duplicated. Smooth flathead V8 power, those beautiful flush-mounted headlights, and the surprisingly practical yet extremely stylish 4-door convertible body style all make this a slam-dunk for the guy who loves style as well as substance. Ford only built a handful of these convertible sedans in 1937, but it's hard to understand why it wasn't more popular. Roll-up windows, four doors, and a top that goes down all make for a car that's great to drive no matter what the weather's doing. Finished in its original Adobe Tan, which was a popular color for Ford in the 1930s, it has a clean, sophisticated look that really shows well. The car has never had a huge frame-off restoration, but has been freshened as needed over the years, so the paint, while not perfect, has a great gloss and a soft sheen that's entirely appropriate to its age and the year in which it was built. Two versions of the convertible sedan were offered, the "slantback" and the "humpback" as in the case of this particular car. The humpback offers a larger trunk and an arguably more substantial look, and it only adds to the car's appeal for touring and trips. The chrome is a combination of restored and original parts, and it all looks pretty much the way you'd expect for a car of this age, with nothing being too deteriorated or too perfect to stand out. Overall, this car looks exactly the way you'd want your next tour car to look. The gorgeous brown leather interior was restored about three years ago and still looks amazing. Ford didn't skimp on the interiors of the cars on the high end of the price scale, and the comfortable leather bench seats look as inviting as you favorite easy chair. A beautiful banjo-style steering wheel, big round gauges with a gorgeous period look, and a nicely woodgrained dashboard all help with the upscale feel. This car is equipped with a very rare AM radio, and shockingly enough, it works! There's an impressive amount of stretch-out room in the back seat area, which also offers plus brown carpets for a luxurious feeling. As I said, the trunk is spacious enough for your next road trip, and there's also a matching spare tire, just in case. And despite the rumors of convertible sedan tops being difficult to operate, this one folds easily and stows beneath a matching tan canvas boot. Ford's awesome 221 cubic inch flathead V8 made 85 horsepower in 1937, and it endows this convertible sedan with a playful, energetic personality. Plenty torquey for around town, it happily cruises at 55 MPH and makes great sounds while doing it. It's tough to photograph down there in the engine bay, but you'll note that it uses a correct carburetor, cloth-wrapped ignition wires, and a generator up top, so it's pretty authentic. It starts easily and doesn't seem to suffer from the usual "flathead fever" that plagues neglected cars. The 3-speed manual transmission shifts easily with light clutch action, and for safety purposes, it appears that this V8 now uses hydraulic drum brakes all around. The driver-grade undercarriage means no worries about putting it on the road, and the gorgeous artillery-style wheels carry trim rings and wonderfully detailed hubcaps, along with recent 6.5-15 wide whites. If you love flathead Fords, a car like this has to be near the top of your wish list. And if you're just looking for a great old car, it's hard to do better than a machine like this.
