This bright red 1974 Jaguar XKE Series III open two-seater delivers everything that its looks promise in a fashion that is uniquely British. Showing just 71,309 original miles, this E-Type can justifiably be called a survivor. By 1974, the E-Type had grown, and was more of a grand touring machine than corner-carving sports car, but that's exactly the right place for it to live. This one has been carefully maintained over the years and repaired as necessary, but never fully disassembled or restored. It's easy to spot E-Types that have never been rusty or damaged, because their enormous bonnets fit well and the doors open and close easily, just as they do on this roadster. The vintage paint offers a soft vintage gloss that draws attention to the length of the front end and the curvaceous rear fenders, and few cars are better at attracting a crowd than this one. Sure, there are a few signs of use and age, but with the collector car world's current fascination with originality, it would be a real shame to repaint it. In addition, the chrome is very good, including the grille and bumpers, although the federally mandated rubber overriders don't do the styling any favors. Supple black hides fill the cabin with smells that others like Lexus have tried to duplicate, but never quite managed to succeed. The buckets are firm and supportive, and show very little wear aside from what the British refer to as "comfort marks" on the driver's seat cushion. Matching wool carpets have been fitted and their edges are bound for a neatly trimmed look, and the dash pad hasn't been baked by the sun. Handsome Smiths gauges are a British icon, and they're all functional, including the tachometer which offers a surprising 6500 RPM redline. More E-Type charm comes from the center stack with an array of rocker switches, auxiliary gauges, and an older AM/FM/cassette stereo head unit down low. The delicate T-handle shifter for the automatic transmission seems out of place in a car with this much performance, but somehow it fits the car's personality perfectly. The top is snug-fitting black canvas and the trunk, while shallow, is tastefully upholstered and in excellent condition. The 5.3 liter V12 was designed with Americans in mind, and its long legs and effortless torque make the E-Type an ideal long-distance cruiser. They're also surprisingly reliable, and even with those side-draft carburetors, easy for the skilled hobbyist to tune properly. The big cat just loafs along at normal highway speeds, but jabbing the accelerator results in a massive rush of torque and the most spine-tingling exhaust note this side of a Ferrari. The 3-speed automatic transmission always seems to be in the right gear, and the exhaust system looks brand new all the way back to the quad exhaust tips. The all-independent suspension perfectly balances handling and ride, and the Jag is equally at home on the interstate or a twisting mountain road, and with a history in Florida, rust is obviously not going to be a major issue here. Inboard disc brakes were a Jaguar tradition left over from racing, and brilliant chrome wire wheels with 185/70/15 redline radials are period perfect. This E-Type transcends boundaries, and instantly commands respect wherever it goes. CLASSY 1998 JAGUAR XJ8 LUXURY SEDAN LOW MILEAGE - 55,220 - AS DISPLAYED ON ODOMETER - SEE PHOTO HistoryThree owner car. Car was stored outside in Florida for 1+ year while owners were out of country on work. ExteriorRegal British Racing Green exterior paint color. Clear coat is peeling on trunk lid, roof, and engine bonnet (see photos). Color coat is not peeling, but some discoloration.No accidents. No body work. No repairs.Some rust under paint on passenger side rear window at bottom corner (see photo).Small dent on top of passenger side front quarter panel.Lots of chrome in like new condition (no rust). InteriorTan/Cream colored leather interior in excellent condition.Great looking interior is a major selling point of the car.Matching carpet and pads in excellent condition.With only 55,220 original miles, the interior has not been worn.It is a non-smoking car.Only blemish on interior is on the Driver seat which shows some wear on left bottom side of back cushion (see photo) that get rubbed when driver enters and exits car.Passenger seat and back bench seat are excellent. MechanicalsEngine is in great condition, starts right up and runs strong. It is a powerful V-8 engine.Automatic transmission shifts smoothly.All the "power assisted" devices like windows, sun roof, antenna, etc. work as they should.There have not been any issues or repairs with mechanicals, except as listed below. 1. ABS warning light comes on with ignition. This light was never on until the car was driven after being stored outside for a long time. Seller believes the ABS sensors on each wheel were dirtied by a layer of light rust from the brake rotors. The four ABS sensors need to be removed, cleaned and reinstalled. Seller does not believe the sensors need replacement, just cleaning. Based on what Seller has read at Jaguar Forum, it should take about 4 hours of labor to fix the sensors, probably around $200 if you pay a repair shop to do it. You don't need a Jaguar dealer to do this job. Brake pads and rotors are in good condition with only 55,220 miles on them. The car drives fine with the ABS light on and the brakes work fine. 2. Traction Control Stability warning message comes on with ignition. Again, this light was never on until the car was driven after being stored outside for a long time. Seller believes this warning light is sensitive to the ABS warning light and might be related with the need for shock absorbers. Seller has read on the Jaguar Forum that often both the ABS and Traction Stability message will display together. It might be that, when the ABS sensors are cleaned, this Traction Control warning message could also disappear. 3. Shock absorbers and bushings need to be replaced. While the car is road worthy without replacing the shock absorbers, the ride is rough and bottoms-out with bumps or humps in the road. Seller believes the shock absorbers developed hydraulic leaks from sitting so long without movement. The cost of parts for front and rear absorbers with new bushings is around $200 (which Seller found on eBay). Seller believes the labor charge at a repair shop would be around $400 to $500 to replace shock absorbers and bushings. You don't need a Jaguar dealer to do this replacement. 4. Battery Not Charging warning light and message come on with ignition. This never happened until the car was started after being stored outside for a long time. Seller replaced the battery in August 2015, but the warning light still comes on. While Seller has not had the generator tested, Seller believes the electrical contacts inside the generator got corroded while sitting outside for a year. It the generator needs replacement, parts will cost around $150 to $200 for the generator (as seen for sale on eBay). Seller believes the labor charge for installation would be around $200 to $250 because the generator is located in a difficult place. But first, the generator needs to be tested before making a decision to replace. Seller does not have official quotes for the above repairs, so Buyer should try to obtain cost estimates on his own. These repairs are straight forward and not uncommon, so they can be carried-out by any good mechanic. A Jaguar dealership is not really required for these repairs. But again, Seller is expressing his opinion here in the vain of full disclosure. Buyer must judge and decide for himself. Seller takes no responsibility for the cost estimates or the level of repair difficulty described here. Test DriveSeller strongly recommends prospective Buyer takes the car for a test drive. It is road worthy and performs well. ValuationThe strong selling points for this car are low miles, great interior, strong engine, smooth transmission, and a classy looking luxury sedan.The downside is the need for several minor mechanical repairs.To the Seller, this is an excellent "Fixer Upper" for a backyard mechanic.
