I couldn’t agree more. In fact, that seems to be the consensus with everyone who sees this car. People are just drawn to it. As the rumor has it, even Enzo Ferrari claimed it to be one of the most beautiful designed cars he had ever seen. The first owner of this E-type was an officer in the Army who was stationed at Fort Monmouth in New Jersey. He purchased this Jaguar in England and had it shipped to the U.S. We don’t know how long he owned the car, but eventually, he sold it to a stockbroker on the NYSE. This owner sold it to a colleague of his who only had it a few years. He befriended the current owner while traveling on a passenger ferry between NJ and Wall Street. The current owner enjoyed working on these cars and agreed to help the prior owner maintain the car. In 1990, after about a year of meeting/working together on the car, the stockbroker decided to sell it to the current owner. This owner used the car as an occasional weekend driver. In 1993, he moved with his wife to Seattle, Washington and brought the car along. Besides his own tinkering, he employed the help of Woodinville Sports Cars, Inc., a reputable Jaguar specialist who was known for their quality repairs and restoration work on vintage examples. When the current owner purchased the car, the paint had already been changed from yellow to red. However, the work wasn’t great. So, in 2002, he decided to begin the restoration process. He delivered the car to a reputable painter, Steven Ward, in BC, Canada. While the car was being repainted, a well-respected engine builder, Allen Purdy, began the mechanical restoration. The original engine was tired, so it was rebuilt using an HK block instead. The original carburetors, heads, etc. were rebuilt and reused. The compression is 9.0:1. From 2005-2006, the car went back to Woodinville Sports Cars to have them do the final bits and pieces of the restoration. This work included: Advanced Distributors restored a correct XK distributor and converted it to electronic ignition New clutch master cylinder, slave cylinder, and hoses Repair brake and clutch pedals Replace all cooling and heating hoses Installed new correct wire wheels Major service including manifold/carb gaskets and jetting Brake system service and flush New convertible soft top Rebuild shift linkage and bushings Cooling system service Replace headlamp scoops and glass covers New alternator Besides the restoration of the body and engine, the current owner spent another $15,000+ sorting out the car and taking care of the small details to make this a wonderful driver. The compression test numbers were excellent: #1) 180 #2) 180 #3) 190 #4) 190 #5) 180 #6) 180 Recently, this owner took the car to his friend/vintage auto mechanic expert Bernie Buschen in Fall City, Washington to have the car checked over and make sure it is was ready to be used by the next owner. He performed a minor service, fixed a few small things, and checked the fluids/brakes. While preparing the car, the speedometer stopped working. So, they replaced the speedo angle drive and transmission mount. They also repaired the tachometer at the same time so it would operate smoothly. Finally, they repaired the clutch master cylinder. This Jag is an excellent driver. It is clear by the condition that it was never abused. The paint shines up very nicely and has few signs of use. There are a few areas on the driver side hood vents where the paint is lifting due to prep (see pics). The chrome and brightwork look to be original and in great condition. The glass also appears to be original. The top is brand new and looks perfect. The interior is equally nice with just mild patina from age. The leather seats are in good shape and the dash has no cracks. Most the gauges (except speedo…see above) and lights work properly. There is no horn. This XKE drives fantastic. It starts easily and with no hesitation. The choke system works perfectly. It has strong power and idles extremely smooth. There is no overheating either. The steering feels tight and the brakes are very responsive. It could easily be driven in comfort on a long tour. The E-Type Jaguar had all of the cutting edge technology. Right out of the box, this car was good for a top speed over 150 mph and 0-60 mph around 6.5 seconds. Technological advances included monocoque construction disc brakes, rack and pinion steering and independent front and rear suspension. One area that Jaguar really hit the nail on the head was the styling. E-types are often referred to as some of the most beautiful vehicles ever made. This particular example is a Series 1 which are considered to be the most desirable and most beautiful. This run from 1961-1967 is known for its covered headlights. The glass headlight covers frame the front mouth opening on either side. This opening is smaller on the Series 1 cars in comparison to the later cars. Other distinguishing features are the rear lights mounted above the bumpers and the exhaust exiting beneath the number plate in the rear. The 3.8L Inline 6 is equipped with triple SU carburetors and is good for an output of 265 horsepower and 240 lb ft of torque. The power is put to the wheels through the Moss four-speed gearbox. These Power figures were highly impressive for this era, especially considering the lightweight construction kept the weight of this roadster under 3000 pounds. Thank you for looking at this amazing 1970 Jaguar Etype Cab 4.2. First of all this is a three owner car that has been in the same ownership since 1988, always garaged and mechanically maintained so the owner could jump in her at any time, fire her up, and go for a drive. Grand Prix Cafe have had her on the lift and conclude that this is by far one of the most original Etypes we’ve ever seen, everything is as it should be, other than the after market Borla exhaust, which has a deep rich sound to it. She is showing 54,603 miles, matching numbers, and has a comprehensive service history going back to the 70’s. I personally test drove this car for 20 miles and I’m completely blown away with how she drives, she has bags of power and pulls perfectly with no hesitation through each gear. The transmission is smooth and without any grinding or noise. The clutch is light and all systems work as they should. She drives straight and true and the brakes work as they were designed with no binding or pulling on application. If you are looking for an etype that you can instantly jump in and drive across America then here she is. There are no rattles, she is a real pleasure to drive with absolute confidence. OK so lets get to the bodywork. As you can see from the photos she is cosmetically starting to show her age on an older paint job, but only on close inspection, the panel fit is just right and shows she has likely never been hit. Now if you wanted to spend some money on her then she would benefit from a new coat of paint and all new leather seats and carpets, you could also go for a new set of chrome wire wheels, then you would have a stunning beautiful dark blue Etype with beautiful blue leather interior. I personally have never seen this color combination. The convertible top is in very good condition and fits perfectly. The dash has no cracking and will clean up very nicely. All the chrome is in place and while showing its age it has perfect patina. The tool kit looks like we were the first to open it, everything is as it should be. There is surface rust here and there but nothing structural to worry about. The rear wheel arch will need a more serious repair, see image however, the integrity of the body is very good. There are plenty of restored cars out there for sale however, its very hard to find cars like this that are original and have not been molested. Grand Prix Cafe is a full turn key restoration shop and have restored a number of Jaguars, including Etypes and MKII jags. GPC would be happy to undertake any restoration work. The Red leather interior is a perfect color choice against the silver exterior. . Jaguar got the styling just right! . Pretty! Here it is in operation! . Very pretty indeed! . Very nice chromium plating up front! . Sharp! . Its a series 2 Jaguar, from the series built from 1968 to 1970, with 6 cylinder engine and open headlights. . Chrome wire wheels really make the car! and notice how nice these wheels are, the chrome is excellent. . Good California undercarriage, with very recent dual exhausts from front to back. we'll see more of that in the undercarriage photos. . Very nice red leather interior. . Beautiful wood rimmed steering wheel, extremely clean dash, brilliant instruments. . Nice! . The leather is in good shape. I noted some wear on the center console pad. . The "+2" section . very nice. . Nice doorpanel and door edge. . Clean rear shelf . Nice wire wheel spare . Nice spare floor, rust - free, with jack pouch. . Jack and handle with pouch. . There's the 4.2 litre Engine, the original engine for this car. Extensive recent service. . Twin Stromberg-Zenith Carburettors, spelled the English way! . Nicely porcelainized exhaust manifolds. This view shows the air compressor. The A/C is all hooked up but does not blow cold. . This is a race-bred machine to be sure. . Wow! . There's the engine number - 7R36008-9, which tells us it was a 9 to 1 compression ratio engine. This engine is still in the car. . 1R40980BW is the car number, and it tells us this is a Left Drive 2+2 coupe, with Borg Warner automatic transmission. there is also a vin tag on the driver's windshield post that matches. The title is correct and matches the car. The paperwork is clean and the car will export with no problem. . Here's the VIN tag on the left windshield pillar, which matches the data plate and the title. , . Title VIN matches the Car VIN. . . The front subframe must have been changed, this is from an earlier car. . Here's the original owner, from Beverly Hills, CA. . Original warranty / Service book . Original Owner's manual . And plastic Jaguar document folio. . The paint job is an older one, and it looks like there are some flat spots, most notably on the roof and on the left front fender, shown below. . These are the words that the Museum of Modern Art in New York City uses to describe one of its larger acquisitions. The sculpture is described as having a "steel body: 47" x 641/2" x 14? 71/2"." It is a Jaguar E-Type Roadster that has been credited to Sir William Lyons, Malcolm Sayer, and William M. Heynes. No one can deny that their magnum opus, this car, has not sunk as indelibly as the most famous of paintings into the world's consciousness. The E-Type is, quite simply, one of the most famous and instantly recognizable mechanical shapes ever created. The design of the car was birthed from the D-Type, a full-out racing car with sensuously curved aerodynamic styling that had achieved tremendous success in international competition. As it required a new, competitive production model, Jaguar's management set about developing the design into a car that was suitable for road use. The famous, feline curves were developed by Sayer, a trained aerodynamicist, using wind tunnel testing and aircraft principles. They were constructed around a lightweight monocoque that had a tubular sub-frame to carry the engine, front suspension and steering, and an independent rear axle. The E-Type debuted in Geneva in 1961, and it became a smashing success, because it offered so much for relatively little. It was no more expensive than most other sports cars, but it was more beautiful than the priciest offerings from other manufacturers, and it had 150-mph performance with outstanding road manners. While the design would evolve over its 13 years of production, it never ceased being as beautiful as when it was first created. The Roadster offered here is documented by the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust as having been delivered new through Jaguar Cars, of New York, on September 6th, 1965! This later Series I model retains the desirable covered headlamps, which are appreciated by both MoMA's curators and Jaguar enthusiasts, and incorporates the desirable 4.2-liter engine, with its improved power and torque resulting in a perfect storm of beauty and brawn, which is mated to a four-speed transmission. The original, matching-numbers 4.2-liter engine (number 7E5305-9, mated to gearbox number EJ4410) have recently been serviced and reconditioned. Fresh out of a long term private CA collection, this E-Type Coupe is wearing an older restoration that has just recently had a refresh and looks absolutely gorgeous. The paint has a deep luster and has just been wet sanded, polished and buffed with shows almost no imperfections (small chip on the outer driver door edge, small rock chip next to the driver chrome headlight bezel, small stone chip on upper opening of the passenger side mouth and a small hairline scrape against the passenger side bonnet lip). Otherwise the paint job looks like it has been professionally stripped down to bare metal and repainted its original color. The body and paint work are beautiful were done to an extremely high standard. The trim and bright work looks beautiful and show incredibly well. All of the rubber seals and body gasket are new and from Jaguar. The wire wheels have been re-finished and are wrapped in brand new period white walls. The interior has been re-trimmed with correct matching Jaguar leather and looks beautiful. The center dash gauge surround looks to be original and the dash top has been re-trimmed. All of the carpets, headliner and trim have all been re-trimmed with correct Jaguar material. The engine has been rebuilt along with all of the suspension components, all of the electrical has been rebuilt/sorted, all of the steering components are new, many of the hoses, belts and seals are all new, the alternator has been rebuilt, the gas tank has been removed and cleaned, the radiator has been removed and re-cored, new cooling fans have been installed the clutch is newer, and the carbs have been rebuilt. The engine is a matching number’s engine and starts right up, idles beautifully and accelerates strongly. The engine does not smoke under start up or acceleration. A compression test has been performed and all 6 cylinders passed with flying colors. The gearbox is nice and tight and shifts into each gear smoothly. All of the electrical components are operating as designed including all of the exterior lights, turn signals (turn signal stalk is a little loose and sometimes has to be held to operate) reverse light, brake lights, headlights and side marker lights. All of the interior lights are operating including all of the dash lights, the fuel light, the headlight indicator and all of the gauges appear to be reading correctly. There is absolutely no rust anywhere on the car and the undercarriage is beautifully detailed and clean. No rust anywhere on the rockers or undercarriage or in the body. There are no signs of any prior accident damage or repair and the body and undercarriage are straight and clean all the way through. The original spare still wears its original tire, the original jack and original tool roll accompany the car along with an original owners handbook. This is an exceptionally clean well maintained matching numbers E-Type Fixed Head draped in a stunning color combination.
