The Lexus RC 350 is a genuine luxury-sport coupe that is engineered to deliver high levels of performance, luxury, and technology. An eight-speed automatic with paddle-shifters is standard on the rear-wheel drive; a six-speed automatic with paddle-shifters is standard on the all-wheel drive. Only available as a two-door, RC is based on a new rear-wheel-drive platform but is available with all-wheel drive. Rear-wheel drive generally offers sportier performance than front-wheel drive. An uber-powerful RC F performance model replaces the outgoing four-door IS-F as Lexus's sportiest vehicle. Two models comprise the 2015 RC lineup: the Lexus RC 350, powered by Toyota's 3.5-liter V6 engine good for 306 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, and the low-volume, high-performance RC F, with a 5.0-liter V8 engine that cranks out an impressive 467 horsepower and 389 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are naturally aspirated; no turbocharged choices here, unlike some competitors. Lexus also snubs the manual transmission for automatics only. The RC 350 rear-wheel-drive model and the RC F gets an 8-speed automatic, while the RC 350 with all-wheel drive is equipped with a 6-speed automatic. The 2015 Lexus RC was essentially created from three existing Lexus architectures, including the GS and IS sedans, as well as parts from the IS convertible. The RC 350 will make up the vast majority of RC sales. Chassis rigidity was a top priority for Lexus engineers, who were able to stiffen the chassis using underbody reinforcements and strategic placements of spot welds and body adhesive. At first glance, the RC can be recognized by its large, hourglass-shaped spindle grille, which bears a family resemblance to both the IS and GS sedans. The RC F's black mesh front grille emphasizes the height and width of its gaping maw, looking like it might just swallow any car that gets in its way. The RC F also gets additional aerodynamics. Inside, the cabin design is unique but polarizing, with a sharply curved dash on the passenger side that mimics the RC's sharply curved front end, and a slanted instrument panel that is easy to reach, but unusual in comparison with other luxury cars. Front seats are comfortable and supportive, though rear seats will only carry small children or cargo, though this is normal for a sport coupe. As a daily driver, the RC 350 provides a sporty feel with enough power to handle nearly any driving situation. The optional F Sport package for the RC 350 features a firmer, adaptive suspension, rear-wheel steering, different gauges and other performance goodies. The RC F, on the other hand, is most at home on the track. Its powerful V8 makes acceleration effortless, and its big, capable brakes make stopping equally exhilarating. It also sounds amazing, especially in the cabin, thanks in part to a sound generator that pipes in engine sound. Competitors to the 2015 Lexus RC 350 are few but mighty, including the Audi A5, BMW 4 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe, and Cadillac ATS coupe. The Lexus RC F goes up against the likes of the Audi RS 5, BMW M4 and Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG coupe. While it might lack the prestige of a German marque, the Lexus RC is a good choice for those looking for a capable car that isn't as common on the road. And when it comes to track performance, the RC F not only measures up, but in a segment where other brands can tack on tens of thousands for options, the RC F can also offer a better value for the money. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround Size-wise, the 2015 Lexus RC coupe is about an inch longer and an inch wider than the Lexus IS sedan, though it rides on a wheelbase about three inches shorter (therefore more overhang). It also sits more than an inch lower. Compared with the BMW 4 Series, the Lexus RC is about two inches longer, and about an inch taller. Although bigger than its German rival, the RC still feels relatively compact, as opposed to the BMW, which can feel like a pretty large car. Lines on the Lexus RC are mostly a combination of aggressive angles and sharp curves. The RC's big mouth is a familiar but unique take on the Lexus spindle grille, an hourglass shape (which can resemble and upside-down serving bowl) found on the IS and GS sedans. On the RS, the front end is more sharply curved and protruding, most noticeable from the side view. RC 350 models have a more traditional split front grille, with strong vertical lines on the narrower top portion, and a wide mesh pattern over the large lower air intake, beset on either side by small, round LED foglights. Standard LED headlights are angular and slightly swept back, with Nike-style swoosh LED daytime running lights beneath. Functional air intakes sit at the base of the RC's wide front fenders. F Sport editions get a single-piece black mesh front grille covering without foglights. RC F is slightly lower, longer and wider than the RC 350. The front end is fitted with a single mesh piece over the entire grille opening, creating a gaping maw that looks like it might swallow any cars in front of it. Bigger lower air intakes help to cool the big V8 under the hood. From the side, it's easy to see the RC's low, sloping roofline. A strong crease starts behind the front wheel arch, first curving downward, then cutting straight across the body, through the door handle and into the top of the sharply pointed, wraparound tail light. Along the bottom of the RC 350, a distinct rocker panel angles up sharply behind the door and into the rear wheel arch. RC F models get a functional air dam behind the front wheel arch and different, more aggressive rocker panels. In the rear, angular LED tail lights mimic the swoosh of the LED daytime running lights up front. RC 350s get twin rectangular exhaust pipes, flanked by black contrast horizontal striping on the lower edges of the rear bumper. The RC F gets a rear wing, which automatically raises at speeds over 50 mph and a different rear bumper, with circular staggered quad exhaust pipes. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The word test drivers use to describe the Lexus RC: effortless. Both engines offer plenty of power, responsive steering and a stiff, planted chassis. The combination of refined mechanical engineering and sophisticated electronic systems makes drivers feel capable of nearly anything. The RC 350 is more than able to handle winding roads, freeway passing and other maneuvers with ease, thanks to its 306-hp V6. While the naturally aspirated engine lacks the torquey response of the turbocharged motors used by rivals, the RC 350 has a smooth, linear acceleration feel. Three selectable modes on base models adjust throttle control, steering and fuel management to suit your mood: Eco, Normal and Sport. The RC 350 is most comfortable in Normal mode. Eco mode, predictably, feels a little wimpier as its primary goal is fuel economy. Sport is the peppiest of them all, and drivers can engage further by using the paddle shifters and changing gears manually. On the track, the RC F made us giggle out loud as we put the pedal to the metal down the straightaway, reaching triple-digit speeds just before the braking zone. Toyota's 467-hp V8 is superb, offering tons of power while still feeling refined. Combined with the 8-speed automatic, the RC F is exhilarating and fun, without feeling twitchy like the IS F. Another defining characteristic of the RC F is its sound. Engineers put much time and effort into developing an exhaust note for the RC F that would be both tantalizing and distinctive. They succeeded. The RC F has a delightful refined purr: It's not trying to copy the throaty growl of a BMW or the rowdy roar of a muscle car. As is common with most sports cars today, sound is piped into the cabin through a sound generator, giving the driver pleasure of hearing the RC F without rolling down the windows. Rigidity was a top priority for Lexus engineers, who were able to stiffen the chassis using additional bracing, underbody reinforcements and strategic placements of spot welds and body adhesive. The result is a firm, planted car that can handle aggressive driving on the street or track with near-perfect composure and very little cabin noise. Although the RC lacks the near-perfect 50/50 balance of a BMW (it's 54/46 in the RC 350 and 55/45 in the RC F), it still feels tossable and well in control. The RC 350 uses a suspension setup oft used in performance cars, with double wishbones in front and a multilink in the rear, both with (fixed) coil springs and stabilizer bars. The ride is firm, but not uncomfortable, and certainly nothing like Toyota's FR-S sportscar, which, while capable, can be teeth-chattering. The RC F gets a beefed-up, adaptive suspension that continuously adjust damping rates for the best handling. Big, biting brakes are perhaps one of the most impressive features of the RC F, made by Brembo exclusively for Lexus. Massive 15-inch discs with six-piston caliper discs sit up front, with 13.6-inch discs and four caliper pistons in the rear. We played with our braking zone distances on the track and found they kept getting shorter, with plenty of stopping power. Still, we were grateful for the RC F's electronic stability control, even at its reduced capacity in Sport mode, when we came in just a little too hot on one corner and recovered nicely without hitting dirt (or a wall). Combined with the sticky Michelin Pilot Sport summer tires, we had plenty of grip around corners. Driving the RC 350 after the RC F on the track, we gained particular appreciation for the V8's power and braking capability. We learned fast in the RC 350 to brake much earlier in comparison. The RC 350 was fine, but can't hold a candle to the RC F when it comes to track performance. That's not a bad thing; it's just a different animal. The RC 350 F Sport splits the difference between the two, adding the RC F's adaptive suspension, rear-wheel steering and performance brake pads, making it a good choice for those who want more than what the base RC 350 has to offer without springing for the full-blown RC-F. Though Lexus offers automatic transmissions only, most drivers won't mind. The RC 350 rear-wheel-drive model and the RC F gets an 8-speed, while the RC 350 with all-wheel drive is equipped with a 6-speed automatic. With the 8-speed, shifts are lightning-quick, and in Drive, the transmission can predict the right gear faster than most mere mortals, thanks to Lexus's artificial intelligence shift feature (AI-SHIFT control), which will select the right gear at the right time based on G-force data from a built-in sensor. We didn't love the 6-speed as much, and found shifts a little abrupt on kickdown. If performance is your priority and you don't live in a snowy climate, stick to the rear-wheel-drive car. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior Inside, the unique cabin design is practical but also potentially polarizing, with a sharp curves and angles that mimic the RC's exterior design. The protruding, curved dash on passenger side echoes the RC's sharply curved front end, and a slanted instrument panel that is easy to reach, but not particularly easy on the eyes. Although billed as a younger, sexier, Lexus, the RC still keeps an analog clock, which we think is an odd choice. Seats are supportive and comfortable, especially in the RC F, which holds occupants well around corners. Standard seats upholstery is NuLuxe, a synthetic material made from polyurethane, which designers say holds its shape over time better than leather. An optional luxury package adds perforated leather, but unless you require that leather smell, we don't think you'd miss the cowhide. The standard 7-inch display sits at the top of the center stack and is set deeply back, which makes for better visibility in bright sunlight. Controls consist of a round knob in the center console, as well as a new touchpad and surrounding buttons that let users draw and tap, similar to the interfaces used by Audi and BMW. We found this relatively easy to use and were able to enter information pretty quickly, though we still think most OE navigation systems are tedious compared with the map apps on most smartphones. Sound quality from the base sound system is good, and even better from the upgraded Mark Levinson system. Generally, we found iPhone integration to be seamless, although when playing music from our iPhone 5s when tethered via USB, the audio system inexplicably kept turning off. We were in contact with representatives from Mark Levinson, who said they were aware of the problem and were working on it. The steering wheel is comfortable and meaty, but not overly thick like BMW M cars, for example. Steering-wheel-mounted buttons control audio, phone and cruise control and some menu functions. The instrument cluster on the RC 350 is composed of analog gauges, with easy-to-read white text on a black background. Models with the F Sport package, as well as the RC F get a TFT instrument cluster that's reconfigurable. Storage up front is minimal, with two cupholders on the passenger's side of the center console, and a small space within the center armrest. There aren't any extra cubbies or slots on the console for a phone or other small items, and the door pockets aren't wide enough to hold cans or bottles. Front legroom and headroom is fine for most any size people. The coupe's sloping roofline and nonexistent rear legroom, however, relegate the backseat to small children or cargo, though this is common for the compact coupe segment. Cargo space is average for small coupe, with 10.4 cubic feet in the RC 350, and 10.1 cubic feet in the RC F. That's on par with the Cadillac ATS coupe, though it falls short of the 15.7 cubic feet in the BMW 4 Series, and the M4's 11 cubic feet. The LS is available in either a regular wheelbase, or a long wheelbase version with limousine-like rear accommodations. A powerful 4.6-liter V8 sends power through a computer-controlled eight-speed automatic transmission to the rear wheels (all-wheel drive is also available). The ultra-smooth suspension provides a quiet environment to listen to the premium sound system, and the voice-activated navigation system makes sure you arrive at your destination. Source: Model Reviews Introduction The Lexus LS lineup has been completely redesigned for the 2013 model year. The all-new 2013 Lexus LS uses the same powertrain that it's been using since 2006, a sweet and silky all-aluminum 4.6-liter V8 now making 386 horsepower, mated to the world's first (in 2007) 8-speed automatic transmission. Lexus calls it VVT-iE, for Variable Valve Timing with intelligence and Electronically controlled intake. The LS 460 gets an EPA-estimated 16/24 mpg City/Highway. Also redesigned is the 2013 Lexus LS 600hL hybrid, a long-wheelbase model that uses a 5.0-liter V8 mated to a pair of electric motors and an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission. We found it incredibly smooth and, with its huge electric torque, it will accelerate nearly as fast as the new 2013 LS 460, even though the hybrid is a lot heavier. The hybrid is considerably more expensive, however, and it gets an EPA-estimated 19 mpg City, so don't buy it for the gas mileage. The hybrid is very clean, though, earning a ULEVII emissions rating from the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Lexus claims 15 technology firsts for the 2013 LS, with 50 percent of its parts being totally changed from the previous model. Styling-wise, the new spindle grille is striking, like stacked trapezoids, and with the F Sport model the grille looks hot with black mesh. The hood carries a bold narrow bulge, and the front lights are available with LED bulbs that change the car's character at night. Air intakes in the low front fascia are aggressive on the F Sport. LS 460 buyers who want a serious luxury car will need to pay extra for the optional air suspension with variable gear ratio steering. The LS 460 didn't feel like a serious luxury car to us without this option. The LS 460 is 7.2 inches longer than the BMW 640i, on a wheelbase that's 4.5 inches longer, but doesn't look it or feel it; the BMW looks longer because it has a longer hood and sleeker roofline that's about 6 inches lower. The Lexus does have a shapely roofline, sweeping to the rear deck, under which there are twin trapezoidal pipes that suggest power. The trim on all models of the LS 460 is chrome, from rockers to door handles and beyond, and we wish it weren't so, we wish body color trim was available. The LS 460L is five inches longer than the standard LS 460, although you can scarcely tell, until you look closely at the rear doors. We found the back seat of the LS 460L much roomier than that of the standard model, much more so than the specifications suggest. The seats are substantially improved over those in the previous version, and the climate control is more sophisticated to a fault. A broad selection of wood interior trim or aluminum trim is available. The steering wheel is nice and thick and the instruments are clean and beautiful. A super-wide display screen is mounted high on the dash near eye level for controlling navigation, audio, phone, entertainment and it's easy to read, even in bright sunlight. The Remote Touch Interface, like a computer mouse, controls things quickly and intuitively. The aluminum knobs are clean, simple, easy to reach and easy to operate. The ambient interior lighting is totally adjustable. There are great soft spots for both elbows for the driver. The knees also contact soft places, by careful design. The LS460 F Sport model has the best comfort, speed, handling, looks and fun. Besides more seat bolstering and a black spindle grille, it comes with more powerful six-piston Brembo brakes, but engine power is the same. The LS 460 AWD all-wheel-drive model is slower, being 418 pounds heavier and having 26 less horsepower thanks to a different exhaust system. Its all-season tires don't grip in the summer like the summer tires on the LS 460 or F Sport do. We found the LS delivered a superb ride and impeccable silence. Advancements in sound isolation minimize wind noise while other innovations reduce road noise. Five dynamic modes are available to adjust ride and handling and other dynamics. The 8-speed automatic doesn't perform as sharply as the transmission in the German cars do, however. Dazzling electronic features, some of them optional, include Night Vision that can spot a pedestrian (but not a deer) beyond the range of the headlights, and apply the brakes automatically and stop the car in time if the speed is 25 mph or below. Source: New Car Test Drive Walkaround Even being 6 inches higher than the BMW 640i, the Coefficient of Drag of the LS 460 is an impressive 0.26. The new grille is striking, with a bold shape like a cross between a bowtie and lightning bolt. We wish the chrome enclosing the six-sided grille weren't there; at least the F Sport uses black eggcrate in the grille, as opposed to the horizontal bars on the plain LS 460. The shape of the grille deserves a brushed stainless or aluminum surround, classier than chrome. Or all black on a light colored car, like the White Nova. There's a bitchin' bulge in the hood, long and narrow and pointed like a vector. The headlamps, sharp and flowing, are the same with either base xenon or LED bulbs inside, but at night the beams change the car's entire image and look. Directly under the headlights, at the bottom front corners of the car, there are air intakes shaped to balance and contrast the headlights. The thick front bumper passes through the middle of the grille, where it's black and disguised. The roofline sweeps stylishly over shapely pillars to the rear deck. The downward lines at the rear of the car point outward to make it look wide (secure and balanced with a low center of gravity); on the previous LS 460 they pointed down and in, to make the car look narrow. Changing times. Twin trapezoidal pipes say power. Looking at a 460 and 460L from the side, you can barely see the five inches of added length, until you look closely at the rear doors. The tip-off is the chrome surrounding the windows. In fact, look around, there's chrome trim everywhere, from rockers to door handles. We think there should be an option to get body-colored and not chrome trim. The Lexus flagship should have at least one clean and classy model. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression If you want your LS to feel like a Lexus luxury car, you need the optional package including the air suspension, variable gear ratio power steering, and five dynamic modes, from Eco to Sport Plus. We drove an LS with coil-spring shock absorbers, simple electric power steering, and three modes, and we discovered the bumpier ride and heavier steering were not Lexus-like. We also drove an all-wheel-drive model, which gains 418 pounds and loses 26 horsepower to a different exhaust system, and it's way slower. Its all-season tires don't grip like the summer tires on the rear-wheel-drive. The gas pedal felt like it had a long throw, because not much happened when you pressed it. If you must have traction for snow, then get all-wheel drive; but the loss in acceleration is not worth any gain in all-wheel-drive balance during hard cornering on dry pavement. The rear-wheel-drive F Sport has the most comfort, speed, handling and fun. It's got the air suspension package, six-piston Brembo brakes, more bolstering in the seats, and a black mesh spindle grille. But no more power, using the same 4.6-liter V8 making 386 horsepower, sweet and silky for years. With five dynamic modes to play with (or to adjust, it depends on how you look at it), there are many cars to describe here. Or maybe just one, the Lexus that worked in every suspension situation it faced that day, although it wasn't challenged with hard cornering or bumpy roads, no opportunity. But it's a great ride for how the car is going to be driven 90 percent of the time, in summer weather. Riding shotgun with us for a day in the hills south of San Francisco, delightfully, was Nobuo Murata, top engineer for ride and handling, describing his team's efforts to get the ride right, especially with the air suspension, which lowers the car. We also drove together in the coil-spring car, and you could tell Murata-san was less excited. Superb ride and impeccable silence. Now that's Lexus-like. And there are advancements in sound isolation on the all-new LS. To reduce wind noise and improve aero stability, there are small wings on the A pillar, barely noticeable. The mirrors block the slipstream, and that creates an air pocket around a car at speed, allowing it to feel like it's blowing around on the highway. The Lexus definitely lacks wind noise. If it's this easy to silence wind noise and improve stability on the freeway in the wind and around big rigs, especially given multi-million-dollar wind tunnels, we wonder why no one thought of these little aero wings before. We asked Murata-san, but the conceptual nature of the question was a bit beyond his English. It also lacks wheel noise, with the second innovation, the optional hollow-core wheels. Further contributing to a quiet cabin, there's yet another innovation, small saw-toothed fins inside the grille that somehow silence the air. The five dynamic driving modes share programming in the areas of powertrain, suspension and steering. They're not all changed with each mode. Normal is default. Eco backs off the throttle (and dials back the AC), without changing anything else. Comfort softens the suspension. Sport S adds a sharpened throttle and transmission, and Sport S+ stiffens the suspension and quickens the steering. We played with the modes a lot. Comfort is the mode for driving aroundy patchy city streets; it soaks up the bumps, and it's not too soft in other places. Since the Sport S mode doesn't stiffen the suspension beyond Normal, it's a good one to stay in, the ride is way comfortable. Sport S just sharpens the throttle and transmission, both of which are good things any time, we think, not just for sport driving. Even Sport S+ is not uncomfortably firm, and quicker steering is always good, too. Despite the name, Sport S+ is not radical, not a mode to be saved for the track, it's quite functional in daily driving. At its sharpest, under full throttle at redline and shifted with the paddles, the 8-speed is not a quick-shifter like the German cars. The Lexus is an automatic, not a twin-clutch, and it shifts in .3 seconds. There is blipping downshift control, which takes .2 seconds. If you don't get the package with the air suspension and five modes, the shift lever is in the console, not paddles. We liked its console location, and enjoyed manually shifting there, driving that LS 460 with coil springs. The paddles are okay too, but you have to grip the steering wheel with your hands at the wide spokes at 9 and 3 o'clock, to reach the paddles. Right paddle is upshift, left is downshift, as it should be. We didn't get a chance to test the 6-piston Brembo brakes in the F Sport, but really, they need to be tested? If you think your driving demands big beefed-up brakes, go for it. With the 19-inch BBS alloy wheels on the F Sport, you can see the whole calipers between the thick spokes. As for the hybrid, the LS 600h L is so smooth it's almost surreal. Its 389-horsepower engine, matched with the enormous torque of the electric motor, propels this 5360-pound car from 0-60 mph in just 5.5 seconds. It's EPA-rated at 19 miles per gallon City. According to Lexus, the 600h L produces exhaust emissions nearly 70 percent cleaner than its cleanest competitors. The hybrid drive system uses two powerful electric motors and a battery system consisting of a 288-volt DC Nickel Metal Hydride pack located behind the rear seat. In the trunk is a 12-volt auxiliary battery to power the audio system, navigation and lighting. The LS 600h can operate in EV Mode, in which the vehicle will stay in electric-only mode at speeds below 25 mph for about a half mile. Source: New Car Test Drive Interior The new seats in the LS 460 are excellent, in leather that's beautifully perforated; the new camel color is beautiful and makes the beige look boring and plain. Standard driver adjustment is power 16-way with 4-way lumbar. The cushions in the seat and back have been improved to keep the driver from slipping forward and also to maintain correct posture at the pelvis. However with 16 ways to change the seat, no doubt you can over-ride to get your incorrect pelvis posture back where you like it. The heated/cooled seats heat 50 percent faster than before. They have an automatic setting that links it to the temperature setting in the cabin. Lexus is thinking too much about our butts. Someone forgot to take into consideration that 68 degrees to the air around the body isn't quite the same as 68 degrees pushed through little holes into your back and butt, which if you're like us just feels like weird chilling on your thighs, like maybe you wet yourself. But you don't have to use auto, you can select a spot on the dial that works for you. The F Sport adds bolstering to the seats, which improves the fit and comfort. In the non-bolstered standard LS 460, the seatback didn't grip enough to stop back-sliding on freeway cloverleaves, not even driving hard. If we had to buy an F Sport to get the good seats, then we would. Despite the roofline being nearly 6 inches higher than the BMW 640i, there's 4 inches less headroom in front. Go figure. We figure it could only mean a higher seating position in the LS 460, and therefore better visibility of the road, especially since the hood isn't as long as the BMW's. Overall, the climate control system is so sophisticated that it takes many pages in the manual to describe. The number of hours that Lexus engineers spend trying to pamper buyers must be staggering. Something called Climate Concierge gives you an idea, just with the name. But as often happens, they go too far. They think they're doing you a favor, but when the fan speed is locked by the temperature that's set, you get things you don't want and can't change. We hate it when that happens. F Sport interior trim is aluminum, including the pretty pedals, with classy suede-like headliner. F Sport is only available with black leather. The steering wheel, thick in diameter, is all leather-wrapped, as opposed to wood. There are five wood trim packages for the LS 460, including walnut, matte burled ash, bamboo, and the new Shimamoku, which means striped in Japanese. At the press launch, Lexus showed a video of the making of a Shimamoku steering wheel, and it's amazing the amount of work that goes into each wheel, 67 processes in 38 days. Lexus calls their gauges Optitron meters, so they must be special, although to us they just look like analog gauges. They are clean and beautiful, like the BMW 6 Series, except the Lexus needles are organic white at night, not bright orange. The display screen is mounted high on the dash near eye level, and it's a super-wide 12.3 inches, capable of displaying three functions: controls, navigation, and audio/phone. We found it to be highly useful and not distracting. Putting all three areas of information in one place keeps the eyes in one place. The screen is treated to be visible in the sun, and it was for us, on our bright sunny day driving. The LS lacks the option of a head-up display. Lexus says they're still working on it. BMW (and Cadillac and Mercedes and Audi) beat them to that one big-time. The Remote Touch Interface, which Lexus describes as a haptic joystick mechanism, like a computer mouse, controls things well. We watched an engineer work it like a teenager plays a video game, so we know it's do-able. Much thought has gone into the controls and aluminum knobs, to make them clean, simple, easy to reach and easy to operate. Hoo-bleepin-ray. The interior lighting is totally adjustable, blending by location and function three shades of white: Champagne White (5000k illumination), Warm White (3000k), and White Heat 8800k). There are great soft spots for both elbows for the driver. Big pad on the center console is relaxing. The knees also contact soft places, by careful design. At the rear, there are all kinds of upgrades that are available at extra cost, some of them standard on the LS 460L. The LS 460L is five inches longer than the standard-length versions. Lexus stats give rear legroom at 35.8 inches in the 460 and 36.7 inches in the 460L long-wheelbase that's 4.8 inches longer. We asked Lexus where the 3.9-inch difference went, and they explained with some mumbo-jumbo about the method SAE measures legroom, having to do with the bend of the knee and the length of the femur. All we know is that, sitting in the rear of the LS 460L, there was a ton of legroom. And, according to the specs, the regular LS 460 has 5 inches more legroom than the BMW 640i, which claims only 30.8 inches. Available is Ultra-Luxury seating, with four-zone climate control with air filter, air purifier, and smog sensor. On the day of our test there was a gigantic oil refinery fire across the bay, spewing tons of noxious chemicals into a gigantic black cloud in the sky. We might have sent our speeding Lexus LS into the toxic black cloud to see if we would come out alive, but we didn't. But it was comforting to know we had an air purifier for these times. Then there's available Executive Class seating with just two seats in the rear, with a console having 25 dials each controlling something, from a multifunction massager to Blu-ray movies on a 9-inch screen, not to mention the blackjack table. Source: New Car Test Drive Summary The Lexus LS line-up is all-new for 2013. If we're talking the rear-wheel-drive F Sport model, it's a contender for best luxury sedan. Extreme quiet, impeccable ride, great cornering, silky V8 with 8-speed automatic. However, the standard Lexus LS 460 needs the package with air suspension and easier power steering at slow speeds, to feel truly Lexus-like, while the all-wheel-drive models are somewhat slower. This high-performance sedan is meant to be dynamic, yet free of gimmicks. It is meant to combine precision with lavish, luxurious appointments. It is meant to deliver the highest standard of automotive performance, yet be easily intuitive to drive. Amazing examples of automotive technology are included as standard equipment, yet the driver is never aware of them. The Lexus GS does everything you ask, and yet it always feels effortless. If you think of the character of a BMW 5 Series sedan, the Lexus GS is its opposite. The third-generation Lexus GS came to market for 2006 as the first completely new passenger car from Toyota's luxury division since 2001, a showcase of the giant company's most advanced technology. It arrived with more computing power than some third-world countries and a standard of luxury usually enjoyed only in the best zip codes. And yet, surprisingly enough, the Lexus GS has been substantially improved for 2007. New for 2007, the lineup is joined by the GS 450h, which features a hybrid powertrain that combines a gasoline-powered V6 engine with a battery-powered electric motor to deliver an overall output of 340 horsepower combined with fuel economy of 25 mpg City/28 mpg Highway on the EPA cycle. The GS sedan expresses simplicity, yet the car is thoroughly sculpted throughout its length. The design is perhaps a little predictable, yet the combination of this sleek shape and careful work to reduce aerodynamic turbulence beneath the car has produced a remarkably low 0.27 coefficient of aerodynamic drag, and this promotes a quieter interior and fuel efficiency. The GS has high-intensity-discharge headlights with an available system that automatically compensates headlight aim for different passenger loads. The power-adjustable mirrors have de-fogging heat elements and tilt down when the car is in reverse. The variable intermittent windshield wipers actuate automatically when raindrops are sensed. Fast-acting LEDs are used in the rear brake lights. Big 18-inch wheels are available. Source: New Car Test Drive Driving Impression The Lexus interpretation of high performance doesn't sacrifice comfort and quietness, so it's sometimes easy to overlook the accomplished road manners of the Lexus GS. Its fundamental sense of balance makes driving enjoyable, yet its resilient ride and quiet cabin can take the sting out of commuting. The GS can rip down the road if you like. Wide tires furnish plenty of cornering grip: 245/40ZR18 tires are standard equipment for both the GS 450h and GS 430, while the GS 350 carries 225/50WR17 tires. The suspension configuration delivers optimal suspension geometry for good handling, while gas-charged dampers and coil springs promote a resilient, long-legged ride. The GS 450h and GS 430 both have three-position, electronically adjustable damping control to help the car adapt to driving conditions, while the GS 450h also incorporates active roll control, which minimizes body roll during fast driving and further enhances the sensation of effortless speed. The gear changes of the six-speed automatic transmission are virtually undetectable, although there is a rewarding climb through the gears that's missing from the seamlessly smooth CVT used on the GS 450h hybrid. The GS is not the sort of car that encourages manual shifting, yet this is a performance car, and the feeling of acceleration is a large part of its appeal. The high-tech electric power steering is exceptionally sophisticated. Its Variable Gear Ratio Steering reduces the amount of steering lock (not just steering effort) at very low speeds and accelerates the steering effect as the wheel approaches full lock. The system matches wheel angle to the speed at which the driver is turning the steering wheel in order to offset any delay in the car's response to steering input. This works especially well on winding roads. A correction feature offsets the effects of crosswinds, making small steering adjustments automatically. The steering system makes it possible to manage a powerful, rear-wheel-drive car in all kinds of driving and (more important) all kinds of weather. But we felt that both the electric power steering and electric brake system occasionally deliver an unnatural feel through the controls. During ordinary driving, we adapted quickly, but the combination of these electric systems with VDIM proved faintly distracting during enthusiastic driving. In fact, the hybrid GS 450h actually annoyed us because the transition from conventional friction braking to hybrid-style regenerative electrical braking frequently proved clumsy and unpredictable. Overall, the heavy, 4134-pound GS 450h is the quickest of the GS sedans, getting to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds, although it's capable of just 131 mph. The 3748-pound GS 430 gets to 50 mph in 5.7 seconds on the way to a top speed of 149 mph. Fuel economy for the GS 450h is rated 25/28 mpg City/Highway on the government's EPA cycle, while the GS 430 is rated 18/25 mpg. Now that the new 3.5-liter V6 engine has been added to the GS 350 for 2007, we discovered that this car proved livelier and more enjoyable to drive than its up-market siblings. Conventional steering and braking helped the GS 350 feel more natural than the more-expensive models with all their drive-by-wire technology. And the available 18-inch tires provide more cornering grip for drivers who feel they need it. In particular, the all-wheel-drive model feels surprisingly alert and maneuverable thanks to its rear-biased power delivery and the added horsepower of the new 3.5-liter engine. The 3704-pound GS 350 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 143 mph. It delivers an EPA-rated 21/29 mpg, while the 3869-pound GS 350 AWD version gets to 60 mph in 5.8 seconds on its way to a top speed of 130 mph and manages 20/27 mpg. The GS 350 gives up some dynamic control at the outer limits of its performance envelope compared to the GS 450h and GS 430, but it's more enjoyable to drive. Open any one of the four doors (you've got standard keyless entry, so don't worry about having to unlock the car), and you're greeted by stainless-steel scuff plates, the scent of leather and cut-pile carpeting, and the gleam of highly burnished hardwood trim. Nearly everyone can find a comfortable position behind the steering wheel of the GS. The combination of the 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat and a thick-rimmed steering wheel with an electrical tilt/telescopic control helps you find a comfortable driving position. The driver's seat itself is sculpted with an extensive set of bolsters that support you, though they are not so restrictive that they encumber easy ingress and egress. The tilt/telescoping steering wheel is handsomely trimmed in wood and leather. In the traditional Lexus style, the instrumentation is set deep within the dash to promote easy focus by older drivers and also features electroluminescent instrument needles for heightened visibility. Across the dash panel, each gauge, button, knob, lever and wheel is clearly identified by easily read words or symbols, so you can intuitively grasp the meaning. There's soft-touch electronic actuation for virtually every control, from the window switches to the trunk release. Dominating the center console is a seven-inch electronic screen with touch-screen controls. Two banks of menu buttons flank the screen. The driver uses this screen to operate the audio system, climate control, and optional navigation system with backup camera, although many functions are duplicated with nearby buttons on the dashboard. Navigating through the submenus doesn't take too much brainpower, but like most multi-tasking electronic systems, a day spent with the owner's manual on a quiet side street is the best way to figure out the way to work everything properly. Lexus has made a quality audio system a key component of its brand identity, so it's no surprise that the GS sedan has a premium system. The standard 134-watt system features an AM/FM tuner with cassette tape and an in-dash, six-disc CD changer. It plays through a 10-speaker sound system. MP3 capability isn't offered. Audiophiles can opt for the Mark Levinson Premium Surround Sound system, developed especially for the GS interior. Utilizing 5.1 surround sound playback via a 7.1-channel speaker topology, its 330-watt amplifier sends the vibes through 14 speakers via 11 channels of amplification. The DVD-based navigation system has information for more than 6 million points of interest, while route searching is conducted at ten times the speed of previous-generation systems. The screen has excellent resolution and the map images have three-dimensional shading to aid recognition. Voice recognition makes the system a hands-free experience for the experienced user, while Spanish has finally been added to the selection of text languages, which also includes English and French. The Bluetooth-compatible telephone system can be operated by voice command or through the seven-inch touch screen.
