It also exchanges the old B-family engine for a 2.0-liter version of Mazda's corporate four-cylinder engine that's used far and wide in Mazda and Ford lineups. And inexplicably, the new car gets rid of a name that has meant so much to so many-Miata-and now calls itself simply the MX-5. But since Miatas have always been about the driving experience, let's cut to the chase and tell you what you want to know. How fast is the new car? How does it handle? And does it still have that unique ability to provoke an irresistible grin from anyone who loves driving? First, this new model is the fastest ever Miata-we know, we know, Mazda wants to forget about that name. It scoots to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, continues through the quarter in 15 seconds flat at 91 mph, and doesn't stop accelerating until it hits 131 mph. With the exception of the 91-mph trap speed, which was equaled by the turbocharged last-generation Mazdaspeed model, each of those figures sets a record for showroom MX-5s. And this performance is hugely faster than that of the original 1990 model, which needed 16.8 seconds to cover the quarter-mile and topped out at 116 mph. The new MX-5's numbers were achieved with the six-speed manual gearbox, which is standard on the Grand Touring edition we tested, as well as on the Sport and Limited versions of the new car. But we don't expect the performance to be much slower with the five-speed base car, as that transmission allows the MX-5 to reach 60 mph in second gear rather than requiring the extra shift to third that the six-speed does. The base model, called the Club Sport, weighs about 50 pounds less than the Grand Touring, which won't hurt its acceleration, either. Speaking of weight, we are delighted that the new model's weight gain is so slight. At 2482 pounds, this MX-5 compresses the scales with just 102 more pounds than the second-gen Miata we tested in 1998. Of course, the first Miata, in 1990, weighed 2210 pounds. But that model was about two inches shorter and narrower than the new car. It also had much smaller tires, 10 percent less cockpit space, brakes that were two inches smaller all around and without anti-lock control, no front or side airbags, no stability control, and 54 fewer horsepower from its engine, which was 25 percent smaller than the latest mill. In other words, the 12-percent weight increase between the first MX-5 and this newest version seems justified. One other reason for the weight is a useful increase in structural rigidity. We rate the improvement in our perceived stiffness of this third-generation car to be as great as the improvement between the first- and second-generation Miatas. The car is rigid, with hardly any quivers or shakes. This solid foundation allows the suspension to work effectively without any deflection or lost motion. Driven quickly over one of our favorite back roads, the new MX-5 is extremely stable even while its wheels move furiously to maintain contact with uneven pavement. The Bilstein shocks that are part of the optional $500 suspension package probably helped a lot on these roads. On the skidpad, the new MX-5 hangs on to the tune of 0.90 g, a figure exceeded by only one of the two Mazdaspeed Miatas we've tested. What's more, if you turn off the stability control that came in the premium package on our car, the MX-5 is delightfully neutral. Although you can't easily kick out the tail with power, you can definitely balance the car with your right foot once you start cornering with enthusiasm. About this car: This car we acquired from Mercedes Benz of Orlando in Orlando Fl, and it was a trade in for a new car. We drove it home 134 miles with no problem. With its flowing roofline, wraparound overhangs that appear shorter than they are, classy grille and front fascia, and sleek lines overall, the Mazda6 comes across as a smaller, trimmer, tidier car than some of its competitors. The new headlights are housed in sleek and stylishly shaped housings, each headlamp like a squeezed trapezoid or pea pod with pointy ends, inlaid on the graceful front fenders. An upper body crease that would normally go to the front wheel stops just shy of the fenders, and the rear wheel arches have double creases to mirror the front. The Mazda6 five-sided grille has a deep V-shape to it and it's all body-colored, except for the chrome winged Mazda logo. The new fog lights are set in horizontal openings surrounded by some light gray plastic and horizontal character lines in the airdam. At the rear, the horizontal taillamps wrap around the sides, and our four-cylinder had neat twin pipes coming out the right rear, connected to a twin-outlet muffler. Purists might complain about the lack of availability of a manual transmission with the V6 engine, but the sequential automatic does have a manual mode. And besides, there's nothing wrong with the four-cylinder Mazda 6i Sport. Automatic and manual transmissions have well-spaced gears to make the best of the four-cylinder's output. The shift and clutch action on the close-ratio 6-speed manual show Mazda's sports car abilities without any sports car compromises. The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, with 170 horsepower, gets the job done just fine, with the best coming on as the rev counter swings through the 4500-4800 rpm range and keeps pulling to near redline. It's plenty to get the Mazda6 around town or up a hill and cruises on the highway effortlessly at less than 3000 rpm, regardless of transmission. We never wish we had another hundred horsepower when driving it. The 3.7-liter V6, with 272 horsepower, has loads of mid-range torque and delivers better acceleration than the 2.5. In fact this engine is larger and more powerful than its competitors. And it delivers good, if not class-leading fuel economy: 18/27 mpg for the 2011 Mazda6, increased from 17/25 for the 2010 model. Each Mazda6 model has its own calibrations for the same suspension system, and they tend to feel more buttoned down as price and engine size increase. But a lot of this can be traced to tires, and a four-cylinder car with the 17-inch wheels is arguably the most fun on a winding road because it's a couple of hundred pounds lighter than the V6 models. But the standard 17-inch wheels only come with the automatic transmission; if you want the full sporty effect, with the 6-speed gearbox, you'd have to order the i sport and then get aftermarket wheels and tires, because the 17-inch alloy wheels aren't a stand-alone option. At the top extreme, a V6 on 18-inch wheels has plenty of grip and surprisingly good sharp-impact rejection (think lane-divider dots) but it is on the firm side, not recommended for lousy infrastructure, and some road noise seeps in to the cabin. All the models have stability control, but it doesn't engage easily, suggesting there's a lot of stability inherent in the handling. The closest competitors in the grip and ride components would be the Malibu V6 for ride, Altima V6 for fun, four-cylinder Accord for fun, Camry for commuting comfort, and Jetta for interior design. The Mazda6 leans toward the fun end of the spectrum, while maintaining a good ride quality. Source: NewCarTestDrive.ComInteriorThe Mazda6 cabin uses contemporary materials, with metallic-finish surfaces rather than phony wood trim. The exception is the console trim that slashes across the passenger's dash which, on some models, appears a cross between silver-veined black granite and ash-black burnt wood with wide rings in it. It's a look we've not run across recently. We especially liked the brushed aluminum look of the rings around the instruments on our car. The seats are cloth on the Sport, Touring, and Touring Plus, and have good support and comfort. It's a new cloth for 2011, sporty and rugged like the previous material. Mazda has long been a leader in cloth upholstery. Our Mazda 6i Grand Touring had perforated black leather and was beautiful. The seats are comfortable front and rear, regardless of upholstery. There is generous room inside, so even six-foot-plus bodies can sit in front and then jump in back without moving the front seat, even on cars with the moonroof. The rear seat offers plenty of room, a center armrest (no pass-through), and a 60/40 split seatback that's easy to fold. Visibility is good in all directions. The hood slopes out of sight, common in this aerodynamic era. The roof pillars are not so wide that they obstruct vision; the outside mirrors are fairly low and so is the dashboard, all adding up to a good view out. Xenon headlights are included with the Grand Touring Technology Package. Dash and cabin lighting are more than adequate with either set of gauges. Instruments are laid out with fuel and tachometer to the left, speed and coolant temperature to the right. Between the two are the odometers, outside temperature. When shifting an automatic manually the gear selected is shown above the odometers. At top center of the dash is a deep red digital display for climate, radio and clock that's easily read by anyone in the car. Below it are center vents, the audio system or navigation if so equipped, and basic three-ring climate controls. Big omnidirectional round vents are on each end of the dash for ventilation. Lights and wipers are on stalks. Some secondary controls are to the left of the steering wheel next to a small storage tray. Redundant audio, telephony and cruise controls are on the steering wheel. All the systems are simple to use. Our biggest complaint is the beep that accompanies every volume adjustment made by the steering wheel toggle. But this is probably one of the 24 adjustments, including door lock programming, turn signal click volume, and blind spot monitor, the dealer can alter for you. The navigation system worked without error, and gave good voice responses. The standard Bose sound system with 10 speakers including a 9-inch subwoofer sounded good. Good storage space can be found in the center console, doors, and glovebox. A Blind Spot Monitoring System comes on Touring Plus and Grand Touring models, though we have noted no significant blind spots on the Mazda6. At speeds greater than 20 mph the system senses vehicles adjacent; it casts an orange image onto the exterior mirror if it senses your car going where another car is, and makes a noise if you signal while it senses a vehicle in the way. It can be a very helpful feature. We found it worked better on the Mazda6 and caused fewer false alarms than similar systems we've tried on some other brands. Cargo space is one of the strong suits of the Mazda6. With 16.6 cubic feet of volume, the Mazda6 is at or near the top of the class in cargo space. It also boasts a low liftover height: One needs to lift cargo only to the top of the bumper and slide it in, the car's sweeping roofline making the vertical opening much larger than the depth aspect. There are no hinges or trunk arms within the opening nor cargo shelf impediments, and the rear seatbacks can be released from the trunk. The chassis structure is very stiff, which is a good thing. Chassis rigidity is a key element in allowing a smooth ride and sharp handling. We noted no creaks or squeaks from the Mazda6 while entering steep driveways or taking angled traverses of sharp bumps. The B7 utilizes a ZF 8HP542 TUe Eight speed automatic transmission, shared with the 750, but with numerous upgrades to the driveline, notably reinforced driveshaft and half-shafts from the 760Li and a stiffer differential shell made of iron. Because around 30 percent of Alpina's 200 or so employees are engineers, the B7 also boasts proprietary software for the engine management system, eight speed automatic, and electronic stability control. Speaking of ESC, Alpina tuned the B7's to a higher threshold of intervention. Ditto for the traction control system. Not content just toying with the electronics, Alpina tweaked the hardware as well. The B7 sports stiffer springs as well as brakes borrowed from the armored (and very heavy) 760Li Protection. Rolling stock, too, has been upgraded. Alpina's 21-inch Classic wheels -- 22 pounds front, 23 pounds rear -- are incredibly light for a cast rim of that diameter and are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires, size 245/35 front, 285/30 rear. (non x Drive) Alpina claims the wheel/tire assembly is lighter than a 750's optional 20-inch wheel fitted with a run-flat tire. The Alpina philosophy is to produce vehicles that deliver high torque at low rpm, with an overall driving experience that is both quiet and comfortable, even when the landscape is blurring out of focus. Alpina's targets for the B7, naturally, were the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG and the Jaguar XJ Supersport. To that end, the B7 wholeheartedly establishes itself as a formidable foe to both. Power, especially from a twin-turbo engine, comes on linearly and effortlessly, propelling the 2.5-ton B7 to 60 mph in a claimed 3.8seconds (Alpina says add a 4/ tenths for xDrive/). Throttle response is quick but not too aggressive, making it fun and contagious to spur those 545 horses at will. The engine, unsurprisingly, is noticeably subdued under full throttle (don't forget Alpina's philosophy), so those wanting screaming valves or bellowing exhaust pipes will need to look elsewhere. The ride is taut, well damped, but never jarring -- respectable considering the huge 21s and low-profile rubber -- and the steering feels light and communicative. Like the 750 on which it is based, the B7 stays impressively flat through corners, thanks in part to the 7's active roll stabilization, yet its limits are a notch above. Turn-in is sharper, grip is more tenacious, and transitions are smoother. Moreover, the Alpina's brakes are less grabby and easier to modulate than the 750's. Inside the B7, Alpina enriched the standard 750i interior with unique doorsills featuring illuminated "B7" badges, Myrtle wood (The hand's down favorite)or piano black lacquer trim , Alpina blue gauges with red pointers, and a Lavalina leather-wrapped steering wheel with parallel stitching (not cross stitching), which is smoother to the touch. (If you're wondering about Lavalina leather, it comes from soft-hide cows that graze between Basel and Geneva, Switzerland.) Our tester came with black leather and lacquer trim, and its ambiance proved as stealthy as the B7's facade.Alpina, which also operates a vintage wine business, has worked exclusively with BMW for over 40 years. We've been lucky enough to take a few spirited drives in Alpinafied BMWs on the no-limit Autobahns around the company's headquarters in Buchloe, Germany, over the years, and each experience has been solidly hair-raising. Other than creating what may be the country's ultimate everyday Autobahn missiles, Alpina does wonders for the ride and handling of the BMW models they touch, a long with providing impressively reworked transmission interfaces and improved overall responsiveness. In the case of this B7, Alpina turns the 7 Series into the best big Bimmer going. In the niche of thundering bi-turbo V8 luxury sedans, only this 545-horsepower Alpina B7, 512-hp Audi S8 and the 536-hp Mercedes S63 AMG (really reach this particular level. The $139,625 500HP Porsche Panamera Turbo and the $176,275 Turbo S are both fine rides, but they aren't traditional sedans, and their unusual aesthetics don't always appeal to the buttoned-down execs that buy traditional premium saloons. It's not surprising that buying either the B7 Bimmer or the S63 Benz will likely set you back some $140,000 to $145,000 once they are spec'd exactly the way you'd want 'em (the SWB-only Audi is a bit cheaper, at about $124k happily optioned). Base price for the Alpina B7 short wheelbase is $126,600 or $132,500 for the long wheelbase model, with a further $3,000 premium for the undesirable 400 pound xDrive. Take your new B7 to a track with a really long straight; you'll be astounded at the pulling power the V8 pours out right up until the braking point – and the Alpina compound brake set is forever up to the task. Alpina has done extensive aero work to the standard 7 Series bodyshell for big increases in cooling air flow to the engine and brakes. The whole front chin has been redesigned with larger intakes and each passage ducted to cool one specific portion of this finely tuned high-performance mix. That seems like little, but, lord, is it much. Our first track session in the B7 happened with expert Andreas Bovensiepen at the wheel. He is now effectively the boss at Alpina, following in his papa's footsteps. Bovensiepen also just happens to be one hell of a track star, having won various GT championship titles. Out on the circuit at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, just as a front passenger, we could feel a dramatic improvement versus the stock 750Li. In fact, the B7 already struck us as a finer track car than either the M5 or M6, something we'd bet that BMW doesn't really want to hear. That's particularly impressive considering how much the B7 weighs – models vary between 4,655 pounds up to 5,055 pounds, depending on wheelbase length and whether the hefty xDrive is fitted. Couple this sensation with the fact that the revamped Alpina suspension lowers the car by six-tenths of an inch while also providing a stiffer spring set all around, and some of the improvement starts to makes sense. Even in the B7's firmest Sport+ damper setting, the springs are still surprisingly compliant, while the anti-roll control does its part to keep this big boy on the straight and level in hot corners. Another fine helper? The Michelin Pilot Sport tires – 245/35 ZR21 front, 285/30 ZR21 rear. Again, one would rightly assume that 21-inchers at the corners would make the B7's ride and cabin noise a little too Euro, but that's not the case thanks to Alpina's fine tuning expertise and the fact that they aren't stiff-sidewalled run-flats. Alpina uses slick little pushbuttons for swapping cogs in the eight-speed ZF. As far as we're aware, Alpina can take the credit for introducing steering-wheel-mounted shifters on a road car, having added the technology way back in 1993. The custom steering wheel i tself is a wonderful piece under all circumstances – steering action is calibrated to be easier than on the standard Bimmer 7 Series while in Comfort/Efficiency mode and heavier than on the series car when in Sport+ mode. Alpina is also somewhat known for doing swell interiors. We tried both the Alpina B7 and the latest iteration of BMW 7 Series, and the work by Alpina is vastly superior. Other than the terrific new and functional sport steering wheel with Switch-Tronic shifting, the Alpina-specific gauge cluster should be robbed by BMW and used on all of its cars; the current ages-old BMW dial graphics are boring and not as legible. In conclusion we found the 2014 Alpina B7 LWB(Long Wheel Base) to be the finest combination of power , handling, and braking, while maintaining the board room cockpit feel of all the uber sports sedans. The SWB(Short Wheel Base has rear seats no bigger than a 5 series) All future 2017 and newer 7 series will drop the useless SWB for the US market./.
