For people who have learned from experience to buy all the integrity they can get.” Backgrounder: Originally designed by Bruno Sacco, the Mercedes-Benz W126 is a series of flagship vehicles manufactured by the German automotive brand Mercedes Benz. Premiering in September 1979 as the successor to the earlier W116 line, the W126 was the second generation of the Mercedes-Benz flagship to officially bear the S-Class name referring to Sonderklasse or "special class." The W126 was initially offered in straight-6, V8, and turbo diesel sedan models. In September 1981, 2-door coupe versions (C126) of the W126 were introduced. The W126 S-Class debuted a new Mercedes-Benz design style which was subsequently used on other vehicles in the company's lineup. The W126 line also introduced many Mercedes-Benz safety innovations, including the first seatbelt pretensioners. By 1986-87, the United States economy was doing extremely well, and consumers were spending money freely on luxury items. 1986 was a record sales year for virtually all luxury carmakers foreign and domestic, including Mercedes. Honda’s Acura division was started up with great success, and Lincoln and Cadillac found the most new buyers. Since economy themes in advertising had become passé and power and modern looks had been established, it was time to focus on competitors. But very discreetly. It’s interesting to note how advertisements in the late 1980s took on a more genteel upscale feel to match the good times. Luxury cars were a much easier sell now, so far less data and text was deemed necessary. Traditional large American luxury cars were targeted. The subtle advertising theme was to establish an S-class as a better choice than “overbearing” luxury cars saddled with “bulk and ostentation”. Copywriters may have had Honda’s upstart Acura luxury division in mind when creating the advertising text for 1987. Although Acuras had only been on the market for one year, their success could not be ignored. Readers were reminded of Mercedes-Benz’s 100-year heritage, tradition and pedigree which Acura (or any other Japanese manufacturer) could not possibly match. Tiny 1-liter-engine cars and motorcycles were Honda’s heritage – not very fitting for a luxury brand to tout. Mercedes ads began to feature more close-up pictures of their classic hood ornaments and grilles than ever. “You drive the automobile that pioneered ABS and SRS. But never has pioneered an onboard electronic gizmo”, proclaims a 1988 advertisement. Buyers were still reassured, in classic tradition, that they were buying a car of the highest engineering values. History was also touched on by, “S-class. For people who have learned from experience to buy all the integrity they can get.” And, “…but the greatest comfort of the S-class may ultimately be a purely emotional one; the absolute reassurance of absolute integrity.” Cleverly written, these may have been effective in swaying buyers away from Japanese and other luxury brands. Because when push comes to shove in making a large purchase such as a luxury car, the desire to follow the path of lesser doubt can be a strong one. Nicknamed de Panzerwagen for weighing in at more than 3,400 pounds, the new SL for model year 1972 was a completely new body, with new luxury and safety refinements. A completely redesigned engine was housed underneath the hood, a 4.5 liter SOHC V8 mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. By the late 1970's and early 1980's Mercedes-Benz had to meet constant changing emissions controls, therefore, causing lower compression and lower horsepower. For 1985 Mercedes-Benz upped the performance of the SL by placing their new 5.6 litre V8 engine into the car, bringing performance back to where it should have been. Introduced in Summer of 1985, the 560SL’s new 5.6 litre aluminum engine gave more horsepower and higher compression and smoother power output. The SL was given the performance it needed and with sales exceeding expectations the 560SL continued to be the reigning king of the luxury roadsters. 5,900 original miles. European Motor Studio is very proud to offer this exceptional 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SL Roadster finished in Arctic White over Grey leather. This SL left the Mercedes-Benz production line in May of 1989 making it one of the last 560SL’s off the line. This SL was delivered new to Marlin Imports, INC in FT Lauderdale Florida and sold new to its first owner on July 18, 1989. The car then made its way to AZ sometime in the late 90’s early 2000’s with the second owner and then moved again to CA just a few years ago. The car has had 2 owners in its life and has traveled just 5,900 miles since brand new. The paint on the car is near perfect and shows like new. The interior of the car is in like new condition with the smallest mark on the drivers bolster. The dash and center console are near perfect and show like new. The convertible top has been replaced with a Navy blue top and is brand new. The car starts right up and runs and drives like new. The engine does not leak and the car does not smoke on start up or acceleration. The transmission is smooth with no signs of any issues. The suspension and steering are near perfect without any faults and the brakes feel excellent and responsive. The car has just had a recent service and brand new Michelin tires on all four corners. All of the original weather seals are in excellent condition including the original plastic rings on the upper windshield railing for the tops. All of the power options and lights are operating and designed including the original Becker radio and the antenna. Accompanied with the car are the original books, service books with the dealer stampings, tool roll, original spare, first aid kit, keys, and hard top keys. Nicknamed de Panzerwagen for weighing in at more than 3,400 pounds, the new SL for model year 1972 was a completely new body, with new luxury and safety refinements. A completely redesigned engine was housed underneath the hood, a 4.5 liter SOHC V8 mated to a 3-speed automatic transmission. By the late 1970's and early 1980's Mercedes-Benz had to meet constant changing emissions controls, therefore, causing lower compression and lower horsepower. For 1985 Mercedes-Benz upped the performance of the SL by placing their new 5.6 litre V8 engine into the car, bringing performance back to where it should have been. Introduced in Summer of 1985, the 560SL’s new 5.6 litre aluminum engine gave more horsepower and higher compression and smoother power output. The SL was given the performance it needed and with sales exceeding expectations the 560SL continued to be the reigning king of the luxury roadsters. European Motor Studio is proud to offer this beautiful 2 owner 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SL Roadster finished in Signal Red over Palomino leather with a dark brown top. This 560SL roadster was invoiced to Viti INC Mercedes-Benz in Rhode Island where it sold to its first owner on March 3 25 1987. The car has traveled a mere 96,640 miles from new and has been exceptionally well cared from by its two owners in its life. The beautiful Signal Red paint shows beautifully still retaining a beautiful deep luster and shine. Other than a few small stone chips in the front nose the paint shows well and the body is free from any dents or dings. All of the trim is in excellent condition and showing only minimal wear or age (some of the aluminum finish is just starting to haze and there is one small scrape on the driver side rear bumper). The interior is in exceptional original condition. The leather is still soft and supple with almost no wear on either of the seats. The original dash board is in excellent condition and completely untouched. There are no cracks or shrinkage anywhere and the center console is in excellent condition as well. All of the wood is in beautiful condition retaining a nice color free from any major discoloration. All of the gauges are in excellent condition still retaining a nice orange color on all of the dials and all of the switchgear on the dash and center console are all in excellent undamaged condition. The softop is the original German canvas and in beautiful condition free from any fade or damage and retaining its original marking and logos. The engine starts right up and idles smoothly and freely. There is no smoke under start up or acceleration and the engine pulls exceptionally well. The gearbox is smooth and shifts into all of its gears with ease and without any hesitation or clunking. The steering is nice and tight and free from any drifting or movement in the wheel. The brakes are excellent and free from any fade or grinding (brand new front pads). The suspension is nice and tight and free from any rattles or noises. All of the electronics are operating as designed. The interior and exterior lights are all working including all of the dash lights and courtesy lights. The original Becker radio is operating as designed including the power antenna, the AC blows ice cold and the heater is blowing hot. The power windows all work as designed and the door locks and mirror are working as well. This is an excellent running and driving 560SL that has been exceptionally well cared for and has been stored properly. There are no signs of rust anywhere on the car and the undercarriage is very clean and well cared for. Today they remain fantastic cruisers with great performance and an iron-clad reputation for quality and durability. This beautifully maintained 1987 560SL is the one to own, with the biggest engine fitted to an R107, an upgraded interior, and the longest list of standard features. Of course, this SL still carries the instantly-recognizable bodywork that defined almost two decades' worth of SLs, with the only noteworthy change being a tacked-on third brake light mandated by the Feds in 1986. Wearing 100% of its original sheetmetal and bright white paint, this astoundingly clean SL is exactly the kind of no-stories car you want to own. There's still a great shine to the bodywork, because you truly did get something exceptional for your money back in 1987, and there's no denying that Mercedes-Benz did put these together with extreme care; just look at the way the panels fit. And until you've slammed the door on one of these over-built tanks, you don't know how solid a topless car can be. Sure, there are a few signs of use, but like most SLs, this one has led an exceptionally easy life as someone's fair-weather cruiser and it shows. The beautiful contrasting tan interior is also mostly original, including the seat covers in original MB-Tex, carpets, and the real wood inserts on the dash itself. As a car that has spent most of its life with the top down, it's surprising that the sun hasn't really taken a toll, but the seats are supple, the carpets are not faded (mostly thanks to carpeted floor mats), and the steering wheel feels substantial in your hands. The seats have that firm feeling that only Mercedes seats seem to deliver, and all the gauges are fully functional. In fact, everything works, rare on other machines this sophisticated but common on well-maintained R107s. By '87, just about everything was standard on the SL, including automatic climate control, a power passenger side mirror, power windows, cruise control, and additions like airbags and ABS brakes. More recently it has received an upgraded AM/FM/CD stereo that's a big upgrade over the original Becker or Blaupunkt head unit, but otherwise it's quite stock. The fully lined trunk is fitted with plush tan carpets, and this car includes both a brand new black canvas soft top and removable hard top. Recently serviced, this car is a heck of a runner. The 5.6-liter V8 engine under the hood was a big upgrade in the power department and lights off with a rumbling V8 idle and pulls hard thanks to 227 horsepower and a quick-shifting 4-speed automatic transmission. The engine bay is a bit grungy, but there's no denying that these cars have earned their legendary reliability status the old fashioned way: by being supremely reliable. SLs routinely run hundreds of thousands of miles with proper maintenance, and thanks to the recent service that includes new brakes, a major transmission service, and a rebuilt steering box, it runs and drives superbly. Even the tires are relatively recent 205/65/15 Uniroyals on bright chrome M-B alloy wheels. The car performed flawlessly throughout the entire trip. I purchased it with approximately 64,000 miles on it and currently it has a little over 69,000 miles.
