Fortunately, this Merc is also a wonderful car in every way, so the flathead definitely went out with a bang. With all the focus on vintage hot-rodding, it's easy to forget that your parents and grandparents drove cars like this to work every day. With that in mind, you shouldn't be surprised that this one works as well as it does or that it looks so polished. The Mercury brand was hitting on all eight cylinders in 1953, boasting impressive sales and a rejuvenated image thanks to cars like this. The bright red paint is pretty close to the original Siren Red, and with that contrasting white roof, it has a high-profile look that fits the Monterey's upscale status. Coming out of long-term ownership (something like 60 years!), it's important to note that this car has never had a frame-off restoration, so it has looked this good pretty much its entire life. It's been repainted, but the super straight bodywork comes from clean Texas living not a restorer's tools, and it still fits together with a precision that feels authentic. Heavy chrome bumpers are in very good condition, and it appears that most of the stainless trim is original, so it could be easily buffed and polished to really stand out. The two-tone red and black interior was probably freshened at the same time the car was painted and shows almost no signs of use since then. The vinyl upholstery is durable and comfortable, stitched into factory-correct patterns that value simplicity over flash. The dashboard, however, is a different story with its futuristic look, floating instrument panel, and aircraft-style control levers for the secondary controls. Handsome door panels with contrasting off-white window moldings are in excellent shape and the headliner remains taut and wrinkle-free. Auxiliary gauges are neatly installed under the dash, the better to monitor the warmed-over flathead up front, but that seems to be the lone modification inside. The factory AM radio is still in the dash, and this car offers spacious accommodations in the back seat. The sanitary trunk is neatly finished and includes a full-sized spare tire. The 1953 Mercury flathead V8 is the one all the hot-rodders want, and for good reason: it's the biggest and most powerful of the bunch. With 255 cubic inches to work with, it's ripe for upgrades, and this one has been recently rebuilt. The most obvious tweaks are the Edelbrock aluminum heads and headers, but it's also got a mild camshaft inside and a 12-volt electrical system. It's not exactly race-ready, but it moves the tidy Merc effortlessly with that characteristic flathead burble. Part of the joy of a flathead like this is the way it goes about its business with great torque and a fun exhaust note that'll have you blipping the throttle as you go through tunnels. It's painted bright red, as it should be, and still carries neat little details like the mechanical fuel pump up top and Ford script hoses with correct clamps. The dual exhaust is recent and sounds exactly right, and the 3-speed manual transmission is a pleasure to slip through the gears. New 215/70/15 whitewall radials retain a certain vintage look but deliver modern handling that you'll definitely appreciate. At the front of the car, a lightly massaged grille frames frenched headlights, a factory-spec bumper, and a '50 Ford hood that's been nosed and louvered. Behind that hood, factory-tint glass founds mirrored wipers and straight stainless frames beneath small vent visors and a modified, NOS windshield visor. Beneath that glass, '55 Pontiac profile trim perfectly complements factory rocker guards and factory fender skirts. At the edges of that trim, Buick-style portholes and correct Monterey badging add a little form while traditional door handles and classy mirrors instill a little function. And at the back of the car, dualed '95 Cadillac taillights frame a decked trunk and an Impala-branded fuel filler above a snazzy '55 Pontiac bumper. ENGINE Many Dearborn kustoms get by on traditional flathead power. And I do mean "get by" in the most literal sense of the phrase. While extremely cool, and chock full of character, flatheads aren't particularly known for earth-shaking performance when strapped to heavy '50s metal. Sourced directly from GM Performance Parts, this Merc's sprier personality comes courtesy of a 350 cubic inch ZZ4 crate engine that twists stout 10 to 1 compression into 355 horsepower and 405 lb./ft. of torque. The mean motor's energy mixture is supplied by a coated Holley carburetor, which is sandwiched between an Edelbrock Performer intake and polished, transverse air cleaner. That mixture travels in to aluminum L98 cylinder heads, which hang polished valve covers and polished breathers over stamped rocker arms and hypereutectic pistons. That valvetrain combusts thanks to a forged, internally-balanced crank, powdered connecting rods and a billet cam. Fire for that combustion comes courtesy of a modern HEI distributor and Autolite Professional Series plug wires. That fire is kept in check by a beefy radiator, which is mated to chrome flex hoses and a polished expansion tank. Traditional V-belts spin a rebuilt alternator opposite a modern AC compressor while spent gases are cycled through iron GM manifolds. And first-rate details include: an Optima battery, a small pressure gauge, a Wilwood proportioning valve and a Holley fuel regulator. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Every good street rod has a solid foundation. Flip this polished classic upside down and you'll find a roster of mechanical improvements that mix vintage looks with modern mobility. Behind the small block, a tough 700R4 4-speed features an adjustable lock-up converter. That gearbox drives a sturdy, highway friendly axle, which rides on traditional leaf springs and small lowering blocks. Opposite that axle, an independent front-half features power rack-and-pinion steering. Power front disc and rear drum brakes are a welcome addition and big performance upgrade. There's a true-dual exhaust system that mixes throaty Magnaflow mufflers with polished stainless tips. And everything rides on old school steelies, which spin 215/75R15 Dean Alpha 365 whitewalls around what appear to be '50s Dodge hubcaps. INTERIOR Like its solid mechanicals and striking body, this Monterey's interior is an eclectic mix of bests. A '59 Chevy dash hangs modern air conditioning, clear Dolphin telemetry and a crisp Sony CD player between a Guide traffic light viewer and 12-volt power outlets. In front of that dash, '66 Thunderbird seats feature power adjustment for the car's driver. Between those seats, a custom oil pan console tops premium carpet, which is protected by piped and color-keyed floor mats. Nostalgia being what it is, this cool hardtop fairly accurately re-creates the early '60s drag race experience in a slightly more user-friendly form that you can actually drive and enjoy on the street today. With a frame-off built and more than $40,000 in receipts, this wasn't a half-hearted project but rather a labor of love. If you were there, you will instantly recognize the look and while you don't see many Mercury Gassers, it certainly looks good dressed for combat. The body was smoothed and straightened, with many of the details being removed, including the door handles, side trim, and hood scoop/ornament. Nevertheless, it's still easy to spot its Mercury DNA, from the faired-in headlights to the distinctive shape of the rear fender and quarter panels, to the taillights, which are some of the most beautiful of the era. The paint has a good shine, almost too good to be a race car, but that's kind of the point with this car. There's not much chrome, and even the rear bumper has been painted to give it an industrial-strength look. Really, the only thing missing is some door art and a few larger sponsor decals, and suddenly it's 1962 all over again. At first glance, you'd think this is race car throughout, but then you notice just how beautifully crafted the interior really is. Sure, there are race-grade bucket seats with 5-point harnesses and a roll cage, but there's also a beautifully stitched headliner, gorgeous door panels that look straight out of the '50s, and a bright red dashboard with plenty of chrome trim. A custom billet aluminum insert hoses a full array of gauges and there's a monster tach up top where it'll do the most good. As a nod to civility, there's also a center console with cup holders and an AM/FM/CD stereo system with remote control. The windows are Lexan and can be completely removed and the trick shifter manages a PowerGlide 2-speed automatic transmission, which has long been the transmission of choice for drag racers. The trunk isn't for storage any longer, now housing a custom fuel cell and a pair of auxiliary jerry cans, just in case. The original Y-block just wouldn't hold up to the stresses of the track, so there's a more familiar 283 cubic inch Chevy V8 in its place. With an .030 overbore, 9:1 compression, high output heads, and an Edelbrock intake and 4-barrel carburetor, it's plenty potent but also docile enough to be friendly on the street. It runs on pump gas and definitely has a race-ready look with heavy-duty ignition wires and chrome open-element air cleaner. Red paint on the block is a nod to its FoMoCo history, but that's the only thing Blue Oval under the hood. The aforementioned PowerGlide feeds what might be the original 3.59-geared rear end, which hangs on leaf springs augmented with traction bars. Speedway Motors supplied the straight axle kit and there's a Vega steering box which works well. Disc brakes, custom fender well headers and side pipes, and modern shocks add up to a car that's traditional but still usable. Weld skinnies and fat Torque Thrusts have that old-school look and carry suitable big-n-little radials to complete the look. This car isn't for everyone, we know that. But if you were there and respect the era, this car will take you back without forcing you to go full race. Up for auction is my 1958 Mercury Monterey convertible. I purchased this car from an estate auction over a year ago. The family had owned this car for 30 years plus. The car was restored years ago and was lovingly cared for and stored every since. Since I bought the car, a new battery was installed, a new rear main, new oil pan gasket, new parking brake cable, a new navy blue convertible top and top motor, and also did new seats. The top and upholstery was done by Angie's Upholstery of Upper Sandusky, Ohio. I have spent near $5000.00 to freshen up the Merc and she looks and runs great. We took it on a 175 mile round trip this past weekend and she preformed wonderfully. This car is equipped with it's numbers matching ( Fords largest y block of the time) a 383 cubic inch V8 with push button automatic transmission. It has power steering and self adjusting power brakes, factory cruiser skirts, working am radio, full wheel covers and wide whites. It has a very striking curb appearance.Odometer shows 98,478 miles which we believe to be accurate but true miles can not be verified. All lights, horn, heater, wipers, radio, speedometer, and gauges work as they are supposed to with the exception of the clock, and the gas gauge bounces around a lot.Original glass is still nice and windows roll up and down as they are supposed to. Stainless is excellent and bumpers are of driver quality and still look good. Paint is very nice and slick and shines beautifully and the interior is very striking with the original dash, door panels, convertible boot and newly upholstered seats. This car is a pleasure to drive and cruises very nicely at 75 mph. Nice rockers and trunk floor and floor pans. Bottom of the car is very clean and has been painted flat black and the frame shiny black. The restoration of this car was a frame off. The dash has had a repair about the size of a quarter and there are 2 scratches on the deck lid that have been touched up. This is a super nice and rare Monterey convertible that is turn key and you can start enjoying right now. You could make a show stopper out of it with a little work but she is nice enough to win awards at any of your local car shows.
