One of the most successful selling post-war cars of the Fifties was the performance-oriented 1952 Oldsmobile 98, which was offered as a coupe, convertible or sedan.It was every bit the national newsmaker... as Oldsmobile engineers redefined what it meant to introduce a performance-oriented passenger car. The ’52 Olds 98 was a model of efficiency thanks to the 303 cubic-inch “Rocket” engine, a reliable V8 that produced 160 horsepower and 283 lbs. ft. of torque, specs that are still impressive today.From the Quadra-Jet four-barrel carburetor to shorter piston strokes and high lift valve action, the 7.5:1 high-compression Rocket engine simply couldn’t be beat and it wasn’t long before buyers scrambled to their dealerships as word spread of its performance edge. Yet, it was much more than engine performance that sold buyers on the Olds 98, the car was nearly unmatched in terms of drivability and factory options and accessories.A rigid X-member frame, hydraulic steering, longer wheelbase, dual stabilization, improved weight distribution and a noise-proof driveline all played into the marketability of the Olds 98 line. People simply couldn’t get enough, and Olds executives were eager to please. Here’s a stellar example of the Olds 98 sedan.This 1952 Olds 98 sedan (VIN 529M21734) recently saw more than $27,000 in documented restoration and service work. Mechanically, it is nearly as solid as it was the day it rolled off the assembly line. The odometer reads 91,987 miles, which is believed to be correct. The Rocket engine in this classic 98 saw a complete restoration in 2015. All under hood hoses, belts and lines were ultimately replaced during the restoration. Even the water pump, generator and radiator are new. The ignition system also got considerable attention and the distributor, coil and plugs as well as the 6-volt battery are new, too. In keeping with a proper restoration, the entire engine wiring harness, including the under dash harness was meticulously replaced. Once checked for functionality, every associated gauge and sending unit that didn’t pass inspection was replaced. The careful attention to detail applied to the fuel system, intake and carburetor, too. Not to overlook anything, the entire braking system was thoroughly cleaned, lubed, bled and adjusted and ultimately the wheel cylinders, rubber hoses and metal lines were replaced. Even the master cylinder is new. Obviously, a complete fluid change throughout, and a major tune up followed this extensive powertrain restoration. The list of improvements and replacements is long, however, a whirl around the city tells the whole story. The drivability of this Olds 98 is remarkable given it is now 63 years young. The ride is smooth and the steering is responsive. At idle the engine purrs like a kitten and under acceleration the response is immediate and the shifts are crisp. The 98 sedan handles as expected for such a large car and braking performance performs remarkably well. It is ready for a long road trip. Overall, the body and paint has survived the years well. Cosmetically, there is some patina, cracks and chips in the finish and the chrome bumpers are scuffed and slightly pitted. Interior condition wise, there is some minor bench seat upholstery damage, but nothing that can’t be repaired. Purists will love the factory options seen on this car, which include the DeLuxe radio with electric clock, vanity mirror, turn signals and very practical factory compass mounted above the driver. This car also features factory accessories and options like the emergency brake flasher, cadet exterior visor, chrome vent shades, correct wheel discs and fender panels.The glass appears genuine to the period and in good to excellent condition. It’s not a show car just yet, but it is well on its way to becoming an absolute gorgeous example of the marque. Given the amount the restoration work already completed, it won’t take much to drive it to the winner’s circle. Currently, it is a driver’s classic that is dependable and safe. The engine and transmission have received a complete master rebuild and are numbers match. The engine is the 240 HP, 324 Cubic IN V8, The transmission is the Jet-A-Way Hydromatic. Up for bid is "Eleanor", my 1967 Oldsmobile 98 Town Sedan, with 49k original miles. She's a half city-block long, quiet, powerful and smooth as silk. The exterior was poorly painted at some point in the past. When I bought her just a few months ago, she had a few rust bubbles along the back window and a poorly repaired bang on the hood. I had professional restoration shop Insane Cycles in Morgantown, WV paint and install the hood, and they also pulled the back glass and fixed all the minor bubbles the right way, good as new. In addition, I completed the following:All new bearings in the rear end (professionally installed)New exhaust from midway back including muffler and resonatorNew fuel sending unit New Tires including spareNew BatteryNew beltsNew plugs, wires and coilNew fuel, air and oil filtersBunches of carb cleaner right down the throat... Now.... she runs just like you'd expect, starts easy, shifts smooth and stops like you'd expect from a giant 1960's beast with original brakes... so adequate. The body is solid, no bondo, no rust, only a scuff or two and a stone chip here or there. The underside is nearly as clean... only minimal surface rust under the carpet in the trunk, rock solid floor pans all around, rust free gas tank.... she appears to have been well undercoated from the start. When I dropped the tank to do the sending unit, the bolts turned right off, easy peasy, no penetrating oil needed! The paint job is pretty much the weak point. She's a great 10 foot car, but get closer and you'll notice the trunk deck has a different sheen than the rest, there's a minor sag in the driver's side rear pillar, minor scuffs (some would likely buff out). She really could use a professional coat of paint snoot to tail. The chrome is in good shape... no rust, but imperfections starting. Not bad at all, right now, but heading toward a re-chrome if you wanted to show it. The weather stripping is toast and would be the next thing on the list to do. It does not leak in the rain at all.... but it's badly dry rotted. TOWN SEDAN.... ie no options! She's crank windows, manual seats, manual locks. About the only options are AC, (does not blow cold), factory 8 track player and trunk release... the trunk release is vacuum and worked when I got it, but now seems to just hiss a bit and not open the trunk... I have not looked at it yet to see if I can fix it. Many folks think the Town Sedan had a cleaner, nicer look to the interior than the more well appointed versions. THE INTERIOR: This is where she really shines... take a look at the pics. Only very minor issues here... no rips or tears in the seats, no stains other than the carpets, no cracks in the dash and a perfect headliner. The wood grain is awesome, other than on the face of the 8 track where it bubbled. She turns heads driving down the street, but the interior makes folks ooooh and ahhhh.... THE STORY OF ELEANOR: She came originally from the south, and ended up in May of 1995, owned by a Major, working at the Pentagon. The car, driven by the Major's wife, still sports a Dept. of Defense sticker for Ft. Belvior at the top center of her windshield! As the couple aged, they sold off or gave away some of their vehicles, and Eleanor ended up with a relative in Pittsburgh, where she sat in a family member's garage for about three years until I spotted her on Craigslist. I do have the Major's name, as it's in the paperwork for the car, but I will not list it here publicly out of respect. This veteran of Korea and Vietnam passed away this year and is to be buried as a hero in Arlington. With gratitude for his service, I shall keep his name out of an eBay listing for a car. THE MILEAGE ... is the 49k original? I truly think so.... look at the interior... that's not a 149k interior! Also, I have VA state inspection receipts for 2000 and 2009 showing 36k and 48k miles respectively. No one can be certain, but it sure looks like a 49k mile car to me! WHAT SHE NEEDS: Weather stripping all around, dwell angle set maybe... I haven't touched it, for a show car - repaint.... for daily driver.. nothing, she's good to go! Disclaimer: I'm not a mechanic.... just a guy who likes neat old cars and can fix a few things on them. I am almost certain there are other minor things she may need... like any nearly 50 year old, she may have unknown issues ready to show up. I'm telling you everything I know, but I make no guarantees.... So.. all in all, Eleanor is a great daily driver.... cruise in style, enjoy the admiration she gets and have a blast! She's also a great starting point for a full restoration. Redo the chrome, give her a fresh paint job front to back and few minor fixes... and she's ready to show! QUESTIONS: Call me... 304-216-8867.
