Now to the details on this exceptional and extremely popular Factory Five Cobra. Factory Five 1965 Cobra: They don’t get any Nicer! This Factory Five replica of the famous 1965 Shelby Cobra is an awesome vehicle, featuring: Ø Just 2,490 milesØ The original owner’s-manual disketteØ Fuel injected Ford 5.0 V8Ø Tremec 5-speed transmissionØ Edelbrock intake manifoldØ Cobra Mustang 5-spoke wheelsØ Simpson racing seat beltsØ Leather interiorØ And a world of fast fun! Paint and Chrome The British Racing Green finish is in very good condition and sparkles indoors or outdoors. The fiberglass body is in like-new condition with proper gaps on hood, doors and trunk. The chrome is excellent. The underside of the car is free of rust and it is clear from the condition of the underside that this car has travelled few miles since new. Interior The seat upholstery is tan leather that makes an excellent contrast with the BRG exterior. The door panels are in excellent condition. The carpet is a matching black. These cars have no convertible tops (the theory was they could out-race the rain!) but it does have a tonneau. And, just in case the rain sneaks up on you, the Cobra has windshield wipers—but no heater or defroster. These were intended to be true sports cars! Engine The car’s V-8 is a fuel injected Ford 5.0 that sits nestled in a clean engine bay. The engine is enhanced with an Edelbrock upper and lower intake manifold, BBK exhaust headers, Accell Billetech ignition, Billet pulleys, 30lb injectors and a BBK cold air intake. Transmission/Rear The 5-speed transmission is a Tremec and it shifts like new. The rear end is a Ford Ultimate 8.8 LPW. Tires, Brakes, Safety and Monitoring Systems This car has Cobra Mustang 5-spoke wheels mounted with Z speed-rated Avon tires—245/45ZR17s on the front and 275/40ZR17s on the rear. The large footprint of the tires help harness the engine’s torque and deliver it to the rear wheels. The 4-wheel disc brakes bring the car to a straight and quick stop without pulling or shuddering. All of the gauges (speedometer, tach, , temp, oil pressure, gas) work properly, as do the safety equipment (lights, turn signals, horn, wipers). As mentioned, this is a “driver’s car” and accordingly has neither heater/defrosters or a convertible top. The car has Simpson racing seatbelts to keep the driver and passenger firmly in place as this car does what it was made for: go and stop fast and to assist with that mission, this Cobra is equipped with AC race pedals. Factory Five's fiberglass is better than most, so the car fits together quite well and with just a bit of prep, ends up looking like a million bucks. All the original Cobra design cues are there, from the jacking stubs to the side pipes to twin roll bars for driver and passenger, proving once again that no car has survived the passage of history better than the Cobra. This is not a purist's car, of course, but if you want an awesome-looking snake that moves even better than it looks, this is your car. I'm guessing the intent was to build a car that is as happy on the track as on the street, and the competition-grade bucket seats seem to bear this out. Fitted with Simpson harnesses for both driver and passenger, you feel bolted directly to the car and can feel every move it makes in the seat of your pants. Black carpets help with heat control, but it's very bare-bones in the best sense of the word inside. A stylish dashboard houses modern Auto Meter Ultra Lite gauges and while the wheel has a traditional Cobra logo, the fat leather-wrapped rim is purely to help you hold on tight. A billet shifter manages five gears instead of four, and it's nice to see authentic little details like the leather check straps on the doors and simple latch hardware. A Sony AM/FM/CD stereo system was cleverly hidden in the trunk, along with the Optima battery and for a sporting car, the fully finished cargo bay is a nice touch. While a heavy 427 scores cool points, if you're going to actually drive your Cobra an injected 5.0 is going to deliver more fun per cubic inch. Decked out with all the latest and greatest 5.0 upgrades, from the polished intake to the GT40 aluminum heads, this stout small block grunts out a very impressive 360 horsepower. And thanks to the wonders of the Performance Products fuel injection, it starts instantly and runs like a scalded cat regardless of ambient conditions. Cobra valve covers add a nostalgic touch, and if you've been under the hood of a 5.0 Mustang, you'll feel right at home here. Backed by a 5-speed gearbox and 8.8-inch rear, it has a gear for every occasion, from pulling a hole-shot to cruising on the highway. The tubular frame is very nicely finished, and with rack-and-pinion steering, 4-wheel Wilwood disc brakes, and a set of coil-over shocks up front, handling is far sharper than anything with a big block could be. But when you look at the time, money, and effort it takes to build your own, you'll realize how much you really just want a replica like this one with a 302 V8 and an irresistible price. Factory Five got the formula right adding welcomed amounts of room without taking away from the classic Cobra proportions. You'll feel the difference the moment you sit behind the wheel, but more on that in a moment. First, just marvel at the company's 20 years of fiberglass Cobra knowledge. They understand the gentle European curves originally created by AC, and the aggressive fenders and hood that Carroll Shelby needed to harness all that added power. This body looks exceptional in dark blue, and more importantly, it has some serious durability from Factory Five. This one also gets the details right. The dual white stripes are an iconic touch, but they have a unique silver edging to match the dual roll hoops. Of course the item that shines the brightest are the five-spoke Cobra R wheels. Plus, it wouldn't be a competition-style car without a flip-up gas cap. It keeps a traditional appearance inside with the low-back bucket seats, racing seatbelts, and forward curved gearshift. A wood-rimmed steering wheel re-creates the Cobra look, and the dash offers a full array of Auto Meter gauges. For the driver this feels like a pure performance machine right down to the fire extinguisher on the transmission tunnel. After spending years writing check after check to shop after shop, the enthusiast finally gets to enjoy a car that, by that point in time, they might not even want. Fortunately, there is a better solution! BODYWORK/TRIM Factory Five Racing has long been applauded for their great fiberglass work, and this Cobra is no exception. The car's virtually flawless profile, showcasing the typically tight tolerances that have become a Factory Five hallmark, lays excellent groundwork for a wet looking coat of glossy PPG Copperhead Pearl 2-stage. That 2-stage was applied at a professional finishing shop as part of a 2-year assembly that wrapped up in late 2005. Since Copperhead Pearl is always best when mixed with something else, the car's slick profile was detailed with Sherman Williams White Pearl stripes. And today, this super slick Cobra is a race-bred street king that's puts a refreshing twist on a timeless American classic. Detailing is crucial on a replica because that's where a lot of cars start to disappoint. Fortunately, you can tell the overall impression of one of these Cobras from about five feet away. And naturally, since were featuring it, this roadster hits all the right visuals! At the front of the car, a sculpted nose hangs a Dark Water Customs air splitter between satin quick lifts, mesh grilles and Cobra Valley Crystalite headlights. A sculpted hood anchors an integrated scoop between locking latches and billet Anvil Auto pins. Behind that hood, a stainless-trimmed windshield hangs a small mirror in front of clear wind wings and dark-tint visors. At the sides of the car, Satin Black exhaust pipes frame stylish 427 emblems, Finishline air extractors and a familiar, Monza-style fuel filler. That intake is wired to 30 lb./hr. injectors, which siphon a Holley 250 pump, 6AN fluid lines and Edelbrock fuel rails. At the front of those rails, an Accel Dual Sync distributor utilizes Accel DFI 6A ignition and thick MSD Super Conductor plug wires to sequentially fire eight massive cylinders. Those cylinders combust under Dart Pro1 heads, which hide Chromoly pushrods, ARP bolts and Comp Pro Magnum roller rockers under a polished breather and Ford Racing valve covers. At the sides of those covers, coated Ford Racing headers feed high-flow Factory Five cats and stainless DNA mufflers. At the front of those headers, roller timing components back a billet March accessory drive, which spins a rebuilt alternator at the side of a reverse-rotation water pump. And that pump feeds a custom Tri-State Motorsports radiator, which fronts a large electric puller fan and Zoops expansion tank. Electronically, fresh American Autowire wiring works with Accel DFI Thruster EFI engine management to ensure miles of smiles. And niceties like Clevite bearings, Hastings rings, a Melling oil pump and a Forte's dual master cylinder add to the car's form and function. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Rule number one of hot rodding: an excellent drivetrain isn't worth the metal it's built from unless it's paired with a competent chassis. Behind this Cobra's hot small block, a poly-mounted, McLeod- shrouded Tremec TKII 5-speed pairs a steel Ford Motorsport flywheel with a Weber clutch and Centerforce pressure plate. That tough transmission spins a custom Forte's driveshaft, which is hooked to a spry Ford 8.8-inch axle stuffed with 3.27 gears. That axle pushes a Factory Five 3-link that's outfitted with Koni coil-overs, a Vintage Performance Motorcars sway bar and a Vintage Performance Motorcars banana bracket. Opposite that rear end, an independent front-half hangs tubular control arms and two more Koni coil-overs between SN-95 Mustang spindles and a second Vintage Performance Motorcars sway bar. That suspension is guided by ATSCO power rack-and-pinion steering, which mixes a Flaming River lower shaft and Breeze Automotive bushings with Whitby's FAI modification and Forte's bump steer elimination. Stops come courtesy of manual disc brakes, which pair aluminum PBR calipers with two 13-inch drilled and slotted rotors and two 11.65-inch drilled and slotted rotors. Power meets the pavement through anthracite Bullitt wheels, which twist 255/40ZR17 Nitto NT05 street radials in front of 315/35ZR17 Nitto NT05 drag radials. Sure, it's iconic, but the appeal is still as visceral today as it was 50 years ago: two seats, a big V8, and little else, the Cobra is perhaps the purest distillation of automotive performance yet devised by man. But why waste the time and money building your own when great Cobras like this stunning Factory Five roadster are available for less than the cost of doing it yourself. Factory Five got the formula right, and the proportions of their Cobra are pretty darned good. If you've never driven an original (almost nobody has), then you don't know how comfortable the Factory Five is in comparison. There's more room in the foot box for those of us with larger than size 7 sneakers, more legroom, and they achieve all this without altering the instantly-recognizable Cobra shape. They also lay down some pretty darned good fiberglass, so the cars are durable as well as iconic. This one was nicely finished with bright red paint that has a great shine along with a set of silver stripes that stretch from nose to tail in an unbroken line. The competition look is reinforced by the jacking stubs in lieu of bumpers, a flip-up gas cap, and a painted silver roll bar that matches the stripes. Lighting uses bright HID headlights, so feel free to hit the streets at night, as well as a set of authentic-looking Lucas-style taillights out back. Those are body-hugging Sparco buckets inside, and they leave no doubt as to this Cobra's real intentions. Simpson harnesses are probably a good idea when there's this much performance under you right foot, and it'll take a while to adjust to the mind-altering levels of acceleration this car delivers. Other correct details include a leather-wrapped steering wheel and forward-canted Mustang shifter, which now manages a Tremec 5-speed manual gearbox. I'm guessing Ol' Shel' would approve of the car's vintage-looking Stewart-Warner dials, which bear more than a passing resemblance to the ancient Smiths gauges he originally used, including a reverse-rotation speedometer. It's definitely basic, without even a heater or radio, but that's the whole point. Guys who put heavy stereos in their Cobras just don't get it-side pipes are the ultimate soundtrack. Just the necessities and nothing else. It's also nice to see that the trunk was finished with some black carpet to help control noise and heat, and the Optima battery is a smart choice. Factory Five uses popular Ford blocks, which means that not only are the mechanicals durable, but every upgrade available for a Mustang is a virtual bolt-on. This one offers a built 351 Windsor and a Tremec TKO 5-speed, as well as an Edelbrock intake, Holley 4-barrel carb, and an MSD ignition system to make it run right. Mustang guys will see a lot of familiar hardware under the hood, which is Factory Five's M.O., and Cobra valve covers add a bit of retro styling. The suspension is far more sophisticated than most Cobra replicas, with A-arms and coil-overs up front and a trick independent setup out back, all anchored to a sturdy rectangular steel tube frame. Cobra alloys look fantastic and wear 245/45/17 front and 275/40/17 rear Firestone performance radials. This awesome Factory Five Cobra offers two seats and no waiting. BODYWORK/TRIM Factory Five Racing has long been applauded for their great fiberglass work, and this Cobra is no exception. The car's virtually flawless profile, modeled on two well-known Shelby classics, is a 1-piece, hand-laid Vinylester shell that was laminated to 3/16ths, CNC trimmed and covered in a .015-inch gel coat. That gel lays excellent groundwork for wet looking Metallic Blue 2-stage. Since pretty much every Cobra worth its salt needs some kind of war paint, the builder added a classy pair of Pewter racing stripes. And today, this super slick roadster is a head-turning classic that's ready for the track, the boulevard or the show! Speaking of sophistication, crude detailing is often the downfall of an otherwise excellent build. Not so with this MK4, as every aspect of its design enhances Shelby's innate style and appeal. At the front of the car, polished overriders reflect chrome-trimmed headlights, bullet-style parking lamps and a requisite Shelby emblem. Behind that emblem, a scooped, 1-piece hood flows to chrome-trimmed glass that's seated between polished wipers and Factory Five wind wings. Behind those wings, an accessory hardtop fits well over a polished roll bar. Below that top, aluminum air extractors, a bullet-style racing mirror and small "427" emblems float amid polished side pipes and a familiar LeMans fuel filler. ENGINE When the original Cobra stormed the scene, team Shelby's mantra was all performance, all the way. And, while many reproductions hit the ground as sedate street cruisers, serious road chops require serious motor. The mean mill's energy mixture is supplied by a big Holley carburetor, which is sandwiched between a traditional Cobra air cleaner, a chrome Holley regulator and an aluminum Motorsport intake. That fire is kept in check by a beefy aluminum radiator, which is mated to stainless water tubes and a big electric puller fan. A billet serpentine drive spins a polished, 1-wire alternator above an aluminum water pump. And first rate details, like trick dipsticks, a polished expansion tank, stainless fuel lines, a Jegs throttle linkage and a liquid-filled Jegs pressure gauge, ensure this classic is more than just a random curbside attraction. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION When it's time to put your hair in the wind, forget about outdated Toploader 4-speeds because this modern-day Cobra blisters the pavement with a fresh Tremec 5-speed. That world-class transmission utilizes a Tremec twin-disc clutch to spin a fresh, 8.8-inch pumpkin, which is fitted with 3.73 gears and a posi-traction differential. That drivetrain rides in a fabricated steel chassis that distills a 4-inch DOM frame into modern independent front and 3-link rear suspensions.
