'66 Hertz Shelby Mustang GT350-H For Sale

SFM6S588 was delivered to a Hertz rental agency in Phoenix, AZ in December of 1966.  A full Concours restoration was completed in Fall of 2015, bringing the car back to its “as factory delivered” form.? The car still retains the original T-10 4-speed it was born with along with a date code correct service replacement HiPo 289 installed by its first owner.  After its "Rent-A-Racer" duties were complete, it was sold in May of 1967 to Gary Ray, who fitted it with a Shelby/Paxton Supercharger and Detroit Locker rear-end and then went racing!   Personalization of these cars was the order of the day, as commanded by Carroll Shelby himself “We built these cars to drive the "HELL" out of them, not to be museum pieces!"In April of 1974 Mr. Ray put the car up for sale in AutoWeek advertising that the car featured a new, date-code correct K Code HiPo 289 installed and 47,000 miles on the odometer.  The reason?  He bought himself a ’66 289 Cobra!  The Hertz car passed through the hands of Dean Watts of Pleasanton, CA.  From there, it traveled to the Pacific Northwest to Roger Winslow of Tacoma, WA and out of the public consciousness.  It was discovered “barn fresh” around 2012 in Yakima, Washington hibernating under a tarp with just under 47,800 miles on the odometer, not registered since 1983.  So, since 1974 it has been sitting with a mere 800 miles traveled from the time Mr. Ray sold it. Of the 1,001 Hertz cars produced in 1966, only 85 were fitted with a manual transmission.  It is rare to find a GT350H factory equipped a 4 speed, let alone the original aluminum case T-10.  In addition to Shelby American Automobile Club documentation and registry history, we also have titles dating back to 1978.Offered at $211,613. Everyone’s level of restoration experience is different and it shows in the restoration. An example would be a classic vehicle that's being advertised as an original model with matching numbers could be a phony with a reproduction trim tag and re stamped numbers on the engine block, etc. Another example would be a classic vehicle is being advertised as a full restoration when indeed only a few things have been restored. There are many classic vehicles listed for sale that have cosmetic and mechanical issues with such items as the body, paint, glass, lights, body hinges, gauges, window components, steering components, upholstery, engine leaks and tuning, radiators, transmission, rear end, brake components and suspension components. Up for sale is my 1966 Shelby GT 350H SFM 6S1916. This is a Very Original, Unrestored, Rust Free, Survivor Car. It has just over 40,000 original miles and has all original paint except the drivers side front fender, which was replaced and repainted long ago. The interior is all original including carpet, seats, door panels, headliner, original Impact seat belts, which later 66 cars had, the original tachometer and original steering wheel. The Engine is the original engine that the car was born with the ford vin stamped on the block. When I bought the car the engine was smoking and had a burnt piston so it has just been rebuilt. Some other important parts in the engine compartment that are original to the car are the radiator, the Autolite carb that the Hertz cars came with which still has the original tag on it, the original air cleaners assembly, heads, intake, valve covers, etc. The hood is original and is one of the all steel hoods You can still see the paint runs on the back side of the hood and in the engine compartment as none of these areas have had any paintwork. It has a set of Jim Cowles Concourse Headers along with an original set of the correct exhaust that was bought in the late 70's. The exhaust came with the car when I bought it so I installed it. All of the FoMoCo Stickers are still on the pipes. The H Pipe was missing so I bought one from Scott Fuller along with the correct exhaust mounting hardware. The original C Servo transmission with the tag is still in the car along with the original rear axle. The Magnum 500's are the correct Shelby GT 350H repros from Brant Halterman at Virginia Mustang, but the 4 original Magnums do come with the car along with the original Spare Magnum and original Goodyear Blue Streak in the trunk sitting on the original trunkmat. The original jack is also included. All of the glass in the car is original except the front windshield, The original Shelby VIN Tag is present along with all of the original fender apron stampings. Again, this is a very nice original car that has not been restored. If you are looking for a freshly restored trailer queen this is not for you. All numbers have been verified by Howard Pardee and the SAAC. The car is well documented in the SAAC Registry along with all of the paperwork I have including Shelby Window Sticker, Sales Invoice, along with various invoices from Carmel Motors where it was sold to the public, warranty work from Ford and request for checks from Shelby. Also included is a cassette tape of a conversation from the second and third owners Stephen Pollack and Paul Zimmons when it had 19,000 miles. This stang was built by a Shelby builder. This car has been owned by the same person for the last 20 years and is one really nice mustang. In the paragraphs to follow we will give a brief description of the exterior, interior, and driveline of the Ford. We will start off with the exterior of the Mustang. The body is solid and very straight. The fit of the panels is as good as any. It has the GT Hood with proper scoop and striped. The bumpers were changed at the time of the resto as well as some of the Chrome. It has new weather stripping and the glass looks very good. The paint on this car is slick and is covered in the RED with the White Stripes that are up the hood, and down the trunk as well as the GT 350 side stripes. It has the proper mirror on the driver door. This car has slick paint that has a very good shine. It’s sitting on a set of ’65 Shelby R wheels. Next, we will take a look at the interior of the Shelby. On the inside it’s all done mostly in red and done like a ’66 Shelby with Bucket Seats. The back seat has remained within the car. When you look at the dash it has the better looking gauge package. The shifter looks stock with its automatic mated transmission. Next, we will take a look at the Engine bay of this Ford. Under the hood we have the 289 V8 Ford Engine with a New 4 barrel carburator aluminum intake. The Engine runs out very strong and starts easily enough, The engine bay has been given much to detail with many polished and chromed parts added or updated. Including the Polished Radiator to perfection. New Battery, New MSD Ignition, New MSD Coil, New MSD Rotor Cap & plugs, New Alternator, New Cobra Valve covers, New Chrome Air cleaner, New Chrome chassis stabilizer. Engine bay is detailed clean and presentable. The trunk compartment is clean and detailed with no rust issues as this car has been garage kept for decades now. This stang was built by a Shelby builder. This car has been owned by the same person for the last 20 years and is one really nice mustang. In the paragraphs to follow we will give a brief description of the exterior, interior, and driveline of the Ford. We will start off with the exterior of the Mustang. The body is solid and very straight. The fit of the panels is as good as any. It has the GT Hood with proper scoop and striped. The bumpers were changed at the time of the resto as well as some of the Chrome. It has new weather stripping and the glass looks very good. The paint on this car is slick and is covered in the RED with the White Stripes that are up the hood, and down the trunk as well as the GT 350 side stripes. It has the proper mirror on the driver door. This car has slick paint that has a very good shine. It’s sitting on a set of ’65 Shelby R wheels. Next, we will take a look at the interior of the Shelby. On the inside it’s all done mostly in red and done like a ’66 Shelby with Bucket Seats. The back seat has remained within the car. When you look at the dash it has the better looking gauge package. The shifter looks stock with its automatic mated transmission. Next, we will take a look at the Engine bay of this Ford. Under the hood we have the 289 V8 Ford Engine with a New 4 barrel carburator aluminum intake. The Engine runs out very strong and starts easily enough, The engine bay has been given much to detail with many polished and chromed parts added or updated. Including the Polished Radiator to perfection. New Battery, New MSD Ignition, New MSD Coil, New MSD Rotor Cap & plugs, New Alternator, New Cobra Valve covers, New Chrome Air cleaner, New Chrome chassis stabilizer. Engine bay is detailed clean and presentable. The trunk compartment is clean and detailed with no rust issues as this car has been garage kept for decades now. The convertible top is in near new condition and the power option top operates properly just as it should on up or down motion. But, as with many cars, this Mustang's northeast christening was only the beginning of its journey, as the next two decades were spent traveling through the dry climates of Arkansas, Texas and Arizona. And at the end of the first muscle car boom, circa 1990, a highly detailed restoration, envisioned by a new sequence of owners, was started but never completed. It wouldn't be until March of 2011 when the car's current owner, an MCA Gold Card judge, would successfully execute a nut and bolt rotisserie rebuild. And that first class rebuild, which stripped and reworked all of the car's panels into a combination of super smooth surfaces and laser straight lines, was constructed of strictly original and NOS pieces. Once those pieces were fully prepped and displayed an excellent level of fit, a correct coat of Ford Candyapple Red basecoat was buried in a thick clearcoat shell. Once that clearcoat was completely dry, correct "G.T.350" stripes were laid over a fantastic, buffer-fresh shine. And the result is one top notch Shelby showpiece that's literally as close to concours perfect as any road-ready car can get. At the top of that rugged Windsor block, a rare blower, dated February 10th, of 1967, jams oxygen into a big 4-barrel carburetor that's bolted to a correct S7MS-9424A hi-riser intake. At the sides of that intake, high performance heads, which were cast on February (B) 3rd (3) of 1967 (7), hang attractive Cobra crinkle-finish valve covers between a chrome Ford breather and date-correct exhaust manifolds that wear C7ZE-9431-A left, and C7ZE-9430-A right, casting numbers. The engine's fires are lit by an authentic dual-point distributor, fresh black plug wires and NOS BF32 Autolite spark plugs. Cooling for those fires is provided by an original radiator, dated from April of 1967, which sends water past a unique pulley fan via fresh FoMoCo hoses, reproduction tower clamps and reproduction screw clamps. The "Buy It Now" $9500 US is the price I paid for the car. You are getting the parts and memorbilia for free. So if you are a Mustang fan and are looking for a unique winter project I doubt you will find anything better for the money. Why build a Shelby clone when you can start with the real thing? When was the last time you saw a 07 GT (never mind a real Shelby) with only 9k miles. I have a '07 Shelby GT (NOT A GT500) salvage car that I brought up from Pensylvania. The car has not been registered in Canada so what I have for paperwork is a Pensylvania Salvage Certificate, a bill of sale and all appropriate paperwork for the car to come across the border. It has a bent frame on front drivers rail and both driver and passenger dash air bags are deployed but not the ones in the seats. The doors line up perfectly and open and close beautifully. The car has always started rite up on 1st try until recently. The battery died and for some reason, it won't start since. I don't hear the fuel pump prime so it is a fuel issue. I know it is something minor but have not had the time (7 and 9 year old daughters) to investigate further. Well, that takes care of the bad so let us hear the good. At Shelby Automobiles in Las Vegas, about 5632 California Specials were converted to Shelby GT cars for the 07 model year. They were only available in the USA at select Ford Dealers. These cars were not sold in Canada so you don't see very many of them around up here. I have found a Harley I want and that is the ONLY REASON I am considering selling. I am NOT SELLING the car because 1) It can't be put back on the road 2) It is to expensive to repair 3) It can't be repaired. I AM SELLING the car because at this time with a young family and house renovations taking place I don't have the time and probably won't have the money to finish it in the near future. Step closer to that body's mirror-like pigment and check out its straight and ripple-free surfaces, which are a product of both clean OEM sheetmetal and high quality replacement parts. Grab the pivotal pieces of that well-adjusted sheetmetal and experience the kind of excellent fit that's right at home reflecting a summertime car show. Then step back to admire one well-done classic that's built to exacting specifications thanks to a great combination of skilled workmanship and first-rate finishing techniques. Shelby's GT line threw fuel on the muscle car fire by not only adding power, but also introducing some of the coolest and most aggressive Mustang design elements ever created. At the front of this coupe, a mesh grille hangs a familiar "SHELBY G.T. 350" emblem between big Ford driving lamps, clear headlights and a bright chrome bumper. Lift this Shelby's lightweight hood and you'll find an original, 289 cubic inch small block V8 that displays a correct C5AE-6015E casting number below a February (B) 15th (15), 1967 (7) casting date. Completely rebuilt during the car's extensive restoration, that storied Cobra Hi-Riser twists stout 10.5 to 1 compression into an impressive 306 horsepower! At the top of the rugged Windsor block, a correctly decaled air cleaner jams oxygen into a correct aluminum intake via correct Holley carburetion. At the sides of that intake, high performance heads hang attractive Cobra crinkle-finish valve covers between a chrome Ford breather and stainless Tri-Y headers. The engine's fires are lit by a traditional points distributor, fresh plug wires, Autolite plugs and a familiar Autolite coil. That fire is kept at bay by a correct Extra Cooling Package, which includes new FoMoCo hoses, reproduction tower clamps and a fresh FoMoCo radiator. Pressure for that radiator comes courtesy of new V-belts, which spin a rebuilt water pump between a deep-groove Autolite alternator and correct power steering. And the whole process is kicked into motion by an Autolite-topped battery, which jolts current through snazzy Autolite cables. Aesthetically, this Mustang's exceptionally detailed engine bay appears very close to original, featuring an even combination of Ford Blue and Satin Black paint under correct Ford decals. And everything, from the car's fresh brake booster to its Carter fuel pump, is fully-sorted and virtually spotless. Take one look under this awesome GT350 and you'll find exceptionally clean, expertly detailed floors that are every bit as solid as the car's straight exterior panels. Behind the legendary V8, a 1968 Toploader 4-speed spins a rugged Ford 9-inch. At the front of that drivetrain, straight control arms hang a beefy sway bar and correct power steering between fresh rotors and 4-piston calipers. At the back of that drivetrain, correct leaf springs hang traditional, power-assisted drums at the edges of modern traction bars and a stainless fuel tank. At the center of the car, an aluminized, true-dual exhaust system funnels spent gases through an H-shaped crossover, dual-chamber Flowmasters and slick stainless tips. At the edges of the car, power flows through correct E70-15 Goodyear Speedway 350s, which are wrapped around razor-sharp Shelby 10-spokes. And everything, from this Ford's oxide-primered floors to its correctly marked driveshaft, looks as good as the day it left the factory. Inside this killer pony car's impressive cockpit you'll find a stylish deluxe interior that was completely reconstructed during the car's stellar restoration. Naturally, Shelby focused most of his energy on the performance and exterior appearance of the car; and when those attributes were combined with Ford's already excellent interior, it paid big dividends. The first thing you'll notice is an old school wood-rimmed and satin-trimmed steering wheel that spins around a silver GT350 centerpiece. Above that steering wheel, a great looking dash founds a correct 140 MPH speedometer next to a correct 8,000 RPM tachometer. In front of that dash, plush vinyl buckets, which probably haven't broken double digit hours in seat time, present no evidence of sun damage or rot. Beneath those seats, new black carpet and bright stainless sills center a simple shifter between a chrome fire extinguisher, thick rubber mats and authentic Stewart Warner gauges. Above that carpet, a sturdy black roll bar hangs correct shoulder belts below a fade-free headliner.
