Hello Ebayers, In the last few years, I've had the good fortune to stumble upon and own some very nice 1980's vintage Japanese sports cars. Each one has impressed me with with their build quality, intelligent features, dependability, advanced design and sheer fun-to-drive attitude. Is it any wonder these cars are now being sought out by car enthusiasts around the world. The Datsun 240Z, Mazda RX7, Toyota Supra, Honda Prelude, and more, all showing the world they were a force to be reckoned with. Included in this elite group performers would certainly be the mid-engine, fuel injected 2 passenger Toyota MR2. And also like most of these other cars, the first generation of these cars represent the purist, most highly prized form of the design. This week I present my bone stock 1987 Toyota MR2. I purchased this car recently, not sure if I was going to keep it for the long haul or sell and go after a car I lust after more. Since aquiring the car, I've spent some time taking care of some little fixes and general clean up. The car is now registered to me and inspected in the state of Vermont and insured through Hagerty. As a carguy, I love knowing the ownership history of a particular car that was well documented. Unfortunately, this car has just the basics. What I do know is up until just a few months ago, it was a one owner car, bought new at Lertola's Inc. in Middlebury, Vermont, just 35 miles south of where I live. It was bought new by J. Michael Blais on 6 - 26 - 1987. This info is in the origiinal Toyota Owner's Guide included with the car. There are also 2 entries in the Maintanence Record of the first service in Sept of 87 and the 10,000 mile service from Jan 88. In Jan 2001, Mr. Blais moved to Grapevine, Texas w/ 109,779 miles according to the CARFAX, where it remained until he had put 152,555 miles on it by 4 / 07, according to the old Texas title. I believe both he and the MR2 came back to Essex Junction, Vermont till 4 / 2014, then went to nearby Hinesburg, Vermont. In Oct 2014, Thomas Boudah in Colchester, Vermont bought the car. I purchased the Toyota from Mr. Boudah. I got it on 6 - 15 - 15 with 160947 miles on it. It now has 161088 miles on it. And that's about all I know of this MR2's origins. You can click on the VEHICLE HISTORY REPORT tab above to view the CARFAX Report. BODY - Clearly this little Toyota was well cared for all its life. The fact that is spent much of it's years in dry Texas and had to have been driven little if at all here, is quite evident as it would not have survived 28 Vermont winters. She is in nicely preserved condition. As a car painter for many years, I feel I can assess a car's body pretty well. So here's what I have found. At some point, the left side of the car, including fender, door and quarter panel were painted, no evidence of repairs, so my guess is it was probably door dings or perhaps a key scratch. Certainly no major bodywork was performed and the work done was of high quality, possibly even done early on as warranty work. I repainted both front and rear bumper covers as the original clear was beginning to breakdown, and looked weak compared to the rest of the car. Other than that, it is the oriiginal 28 year old Toyota factory applied code 8E3, Dark Blue Pearl Mica Two Stage urethane. There are a couple of small door dings on the right side and one on the left quarter, and numerous small rock chips in the hood and lower front bumper facia and a few scattered around the car. The paint was recently professionally machine buffed and hand detailed. It is about as deep and lustrous as it was new and really glows in the sun. This is my favorite color available for the MR2. As for rust, there are a couple of minor isolated surface rust spots on the right rear wheel opening edge and the bottoms of both fenders. Again, these are pretty minor spots. The underside of the body and remainder of body panels are solid, original and Texas dry. INTERIOR -Overall the original 28 year old interior is in amazing condition, again reflecting the obvious care this MR2 has received all its life. If you didn't know better, you'd think this car had less than 30,000 miles, seats, carpet, dashpad, door panels are all in near new condition. No holes, no cracks, nice Toyota floormats, a true driver's environment. Much like the similar era Toyota Supra, the driver's seat is multi-adjustable and extremely comfortable with adjustable lumber, side bolsters and bottom height adjustments, as well as the usual forward/backward movement and seatback angle. All gauges, lights and accessories work. Despite it's somewhat exotic mid-engine layout, it's first and foremost a Toyota and built with Toyota quality. "Oh What a Feeling " indeed! DRIVETRAIN / DRIVING IMPRESSIONS - I've admired these cars for a long time. When the chance came up to buy this one, I jumped at it. Once again, Toyota proved to the world it could create a reliable, fun to drive sports car. The twist with the MR2 was it was a lightweight, mid-engine car with no real competition. With just 161,000 miles in 28 years, this MR2 has travelled just a bit over 5700/year. As far as what has been done to the engine, I have no information. What I can tell you is it does not smoke, leak or make any funny noises. With the car running, removing the oil filler cap, there is no blow-by. She winds up freely and smartly with spirited, smooth acceleration and pulls hard through the entire rpm range. Remember, this car has a 7500 rpm redline! The twin cam four, fuel injected, 112 hp, 1600 moves this 2350 pound car surprisingly quick. The 5 speed manual transmission shifts smoothly in all gears, no whining or grinding or popping out of gear. Rear end is quiet. Imagine as a kid, you designed a go-kart that was faster than your imagination and handled like it was on rails. That in a nutshell is The MR2. Cornering ability is truly amazing. The mid-engine configuration is like nothing I've ever driven before. This is a truly impressive and amazingly fun car to drive. Steering and suspension are tight with seemingly no issues to speak of. She takes a bump with control and a corner with authority. And while it's no big block, as light as the car is, she is surprisingly quick and nimble. Tires are mis-matched, 2 Pirellis in front getting close to the wear bears 2 Fuzions in the rear have over 50% tread left, stock 14" Toyota wheels. OPTIONS / FEATURES - I'm no expert on these cars. I've owned a few similar era Japanese sports cars that were more luxuriously optioned. These first generation MR2's I believe represent more of a true driver's car, not as concerned with a lot of fluff. That said, it is nicely equipped with:Factory T - Top removable roof panels, includes original storage bags which mount behind the seats. Also includes often missing the removeable inner roof panels to keep sunlight outFactory air conditioning - I am having it professionally serviced on Wed 7/22 and will follow up on that Wed night.Factory AM-FM Cassette 4 speaker stereo - works in all it's 1987 glory! Plug in a Flock of Seagulls cassette and you are good to go!Power Antenna - worksRear Window Defroster - worksTilt Steering ColumnMulti-Adjustable Drivers Seat - Lumbar adjustment, seat bottom height adjustment, side bolster adjustmentOriginal Owner's Manual, Owner's Guide and Texas title. FINAL THOUGHTS - I really wish I knew more about the history and had the paper trail to go with it. I love that stuff. But I don't. But take a close look at the pictures. After 28 years, this car shows true pride of ownership. You could not beat a car for nearly 3 decades and still have it look, function and perform like this little blue beauty does. I am shocked at the attention it gets from young and old alike. Most people have no idea what it is. I have tried to price it based on sales I've recently seen here on ebay. The car is pretty much ready to enjoy right now. My hope is the air conditioning system will be working properly by the end of Wednesday. I am going to have the system evacuated and recharged with 134A by a professional shop, not just sticking a can of freon in there and hoping for the best, thus hoping to bring it back to life. If I were to keep the car, I would want to detail the engine compartment to make it look on par with the rest of the car. Also, I'd probably break down and buy some updated low profile wheels and tires just because I love that look. But for now, she remains as Toyota built her. Regarding ownership, Vermont does not issue paper titles on vehicles 15 years or older, some other states do this as well. Please do not confuse this with a car with no title. It is legally registered to me here in Burlington, Vermont. I have sold cars from Vermont to folks outside of Vermont before and it will not be an issue. You can check with your local DMV. I will provide you with the current registration card in my name, signed by me and a Bill of Sale. Your state will then issue you a paper title. Vermont does not collect old titles when registering older cars either, that's why the Texas title stayed with the car. Shipping is the BUYERS responsibility. Super Wide Body MR2 TurboFully Custom Modified One-off Widebody What began as a concept turned into reality after years of planning, preparation and execution. It started with an idea to create a widebody MR2 wider than TRD without looking obtrusive or overdone - to make it look as if it was built from the factory. The TRD wide body has been a popular modification for many sw20 owners since its inception. Yet upon carefull scrutiny, the so called TRD wide body is actually not that wide at all. So with plenty of trial and error, a finalized version of a WIDER MR2 was conceptualized to bring out the full potential of what an exotic looking MR2 would look like. After 3 years of hit and miss from body work done by lesser skilled shops, a master body shop that specialized in classic exotic cars finally took on the task to turn concept into reality, creating the wider front, fenders, side skirts, and rear. Everything that had to do with this full custom bodywork, including final prepping took approximately 3 years in the making. The result, a Super Widebody that is wider than any TRD wide body kit out there. Yet, even upon close scrutiny, the extreme width does not look like it was slapped on - rather, as if it was made for the MR2 itself.Fully Custom Dashboard & Camera System To make the interior as unique and striking as the custom wide body, ideas where tossed around on how to go about installing a one-of-a-kind vehicle surveillance system. Keep in mind that this was Y2K time and factory cars where not equipped with back up cameras yet. The whole concept of having 6 cameras from all angles of any car was unheard of, even in today's standards. To make this work, we had to use ingenuity. Remember, this is a one-off multimedia system that cannot be purchased anywhere. First, the dashboard was taken out to be molded and house the monitors, gauges, and switches. The center console was redone to fit a giant 10" monitor and a top dash for a 7.5" heads up display. Experts in the field of car multimedia (not merely car audio installers) retrofitted the massive monitors that connect to the custom switches and 6x cameras outside the vehicle. In essence, there are 6 cameras all around the car that can be viewed from the 10" monitor and 7.5" heads up display. The turn signal modules show the side of the vehicle where the turn signals are being used. The passenger side has 3 gauge pods with Greddy gauges tailored to face the driver. The ashtray has been modified for custom monitor switches. Other custom switches are located on the headliner, controlling the quad splitter seen through the giant monitors. Red suede and leather covers up the doors, seats, and so on. Other accessories accent the interior, such as the TRD short shifter, the Sparco Racing Wheel, and the Racing harness. Big Brakes - Remote Fuel Door - Custom Intercooler - 3 Piece Wheels - Greddy PE Exhaust - Quad HIDsThis whole project is filled with custom and aftermarket parts. The Big Brakes still have plenty of life left as this car is hardly ever driven. The Tein coilovers are kept at a low but manageable ride height. The Aluminum Fuel Door is powered by remote control that open and closes it. This custom fuel door setup alone cost a grand to complete plus the aluminum fuel door itself. The Custom Intercooler is a trunk mount design that sits flush in the back. This intercooler setup sits on top of the trunk (not the bottom which is an easier modification to do). Underneath the intercooler sits 2x custom SPAL fans that can be turned on or off and a custom aluminum funnel to drain water during the rainy season. The 3-piece wheels where created just for this car and are now powder coated gunmetal color. Of course, if you wanted to go wider you can as this still has an additional 1.5" spacers on both the front and rear wheels. And unlike the TRD guys who have to camber out so much just to fit wider wheels, with this Super Widebody, you don't have to. As you can see, there is virtually no camber on the wheels even with the spacers. Imagine if you wanted to go massive. You could fit the widest and deepest wheels on this super widebody mr2 that other stanced riders could only dream of. The rear exhaust is the original Greddy Power Extreme that has been discontinued and no longer made. In fact, this custom wide body blends so neatly to this MR2 that from photos you would think that it came designed with the car. Take some measurements with a tape if you're still skeptical (as with what some TRD owners have done so in the past) and compare the numbers. Here are some numbers for you: TRD wide body front fender is 6.5" wide vs Superwidebody front fender is 8.5" wide, TRD wide body rear fender is 7.5" wide vs Superwidebody rear fender is 12" wide; TRD wide body side skirt is 3" wide vs Superwidebody side skirt is 6" wide; and this obvious difference in width between the TRD and the Superwidebody goes with the rest of the body. This project was literally years in the making with all types of mods added all the time. In fact, it can be driven to any show or car meet. But there are a few things that need fixing: The remote actuator on the remote fuel door must be replaced in order to use the remote. Otherwise it must be opened and closed manually. There are some scratches on the driver side skirt which was done by the people who worked on the car. I had the car updated last year and the mechanic refreshed the turbo and did some minor tuning. In the process, he scratched the side skirt (nothing major). Also, I took out the amps under the hood, the woofers on the back, and the sound system to save some weight. I still have all the parts if someone wants to put it back. And lastly, if you want to push the car to its limits a major tune must be done. I can recommend a great Tuner who works on the MR2. Remember this is not your average MR2 Turbo, not even your average Wide body MR2. This is a fully custom Super Widebody MR2 Turbo that was driven solely to the shows and magazine shoots. After a five-year hiatus, the new MR2 Spyder marked the return of the mid-engine sports car to Toyota's line-up. We are the nation's leading seller of MR2 parts. It isn't often that we offer vehicles for sale (check our ebay history). Occasionally we discover an MR2 that would benefit from a new life instead of being taken apart to save others. We probably spent too much time and money ($1500+ just for paint) on this car, but it was rust-free, unmolested, and only needed minor body work and a replacement engine because its 5SFE needed cylinder head work. It runs well and drives as it should. Aside from the engine and front bumper (oem bumper was damaged by curb), this car has never been modified or toyed with like a lot of others. It *really* could benefit (at least visually) from a set of lowering springs, as these cars had a rather tall ride height even with the factory 14" wheels. The 17" wheels fit the wheel arch better, but exaggerate the ride height. Passenger seat bottom has stitching defect. Passenger door panel has 2 small rips. Engine lid from turbo model does not have steel underside to divert rain water. Hasn't been a problem for us, but we try to disclose all known defects.

After a five-year hiatus, the new MR2 Spyder marked the return of the mid-engine sports car to Toyota's line-up. VVTI DOHC ENGINE The Toyota vehicle has been fitted with a 1.8-litre double overhead cam (DOHC) 16-valve four-cylinder engine with a VVT-I (Variable Valve Timing with Intelligence) system. This produces 138bhp at 6,400rpm. It also sustains a torque of 125ft-lbs at 4,400rpm. The VVT-I system is used to improve fuel economy and engine performance as well as reduce exhaust emissions. This system controls the intake camshaft valve timing so as to obtain a balance between engine output, fuel consumption and emission control performance. By varying the cam timing, and thus the valve overlap, the engine can run more cleanly at low revs, boost its torque in the middle and still manage powerful high-rev performance. The engine is positioned near the centre of the chassis. This has the effect of of lowering the centre of gravity, thus improving the handling of the vehicle when cornering at high speed. The vehicle uses a mid-engine drivetrain with rear-wheel drive and five-speed manual transmission. POWER TO WEIGHT RATIO The new development focused on designing a pure sports car. This first meant that the car had to be light and so a curb weight of 2,195lbs was achieved. From this point, the company was able to focus on power to weight ratio, which would determine the speed and performance of the vehicle. The lighter the car, the better the power to weight ratio will be for a given engine. As car engines are an expensive part of the overall package, lightness has significant benefits. MR2 SUSPENSION Handling is further improved with the car's specifically designed suspension system. This includes a front independent MacPherson strut and rear independent dual-link MacPherson strut, with damper struts, lower control arms, coil springs and anti-roll bars. Steering is aided using a rack-and-pinion with electro-hydraulic power-assist, which enables a turning circle of 17.4 feet. ABS BRAKES The vehicle is light but also capable of reaching high speeds. The emphasis was therefore on developing an effective braking system, and the vehicle was fitted with power-assisted ventilated disc brakes with anti-lock brake system (ABS). For maximum grip, the vehicle was fitted with P185/55R15 at the front and P205/50R15 at the back. Brake testing showed that the vehicle could achieve 70–0 mph in 3.26s and a distance of 166.7ft. Fuel consumption in urban areas averages 25mpg, while on the motorway the average consumption rises over 30mpg. SAFETY FEATURES Customers have demanded a higher standard of safety from all vehicle manufacturers in recent years. The Toyota Spyder is no exception to this. Contact us at 888-811-2487 with any problems so we can help! 1991 Red Toyota MR2 Turbo 73.5k original miles - Very Clean VIN is: jt2sw22n1m0021966 MANY PICTURES BELOW DESCRIPTION! ’91 Toyota MR2 Turbo, 73500 original, documented miles, for sale by owner (I am in electronics trade and not a car dealer). Two previous, adult owners, before I bought this car couple of years ago, because I always wanted to own original, red MR2 Turbo. 100% original paint on all body parts, all VIN number stickers on body panels are present and matching. I chose not to repair few body blemishes, to keep original paint. This is fully loaded version, with leather, T-Tops, power steering, ABS and stock CD/Tape player. Besides new rims and tires (pictured), car is 100%, unmodified stock, including all turbo parts. Factory 14”rims + lug bolts are included with sale, however one rim has some curb damage (see pictures). Currently car runs perfectly and ready for daily use, I rarely get to take it out and mostly find myself driving my versatile F-150. Engine in this car is in excellent shape, it has no leaks and does not smoke (even when first started). Turbo spools normally, boost gage goes all the way up at a higher throttle. Clutch grabs at the bottom and feels very good. All synchronizers are solid and do not grind. Car feels and handles excellent, brakes are great and pulsation free. There is absolutely no body rust and the only corrosion residue present on some hardware and cast iron suspension parts. I was told that second gen. MR2’s were galvanized, perhaps this is what kept this car so solid. Here is quick video of the car: https://youtu.be/cVkIiUGotts T-Tops DO NOT LEAK, absolutely no leaks in the rain, however if I take it through touch free, high pressure wash, there are two minor drips coming between each door glass and upper rubber seal. Nothing leaks in the rain. Now I will state some facts and provide high resolution pictures, so I do not leave anything to your imagination. New parts and recent maintenance: - All brake rotors + pads - “Drag” brand, 17” rims + Continental tires + wheel alignment, recently done at local shop, receipts included. - Parking brake cables, those are hard to find anymore - Shifter cable bushings - Fuel filter, air cleaner, oil filter, engine and gear oil (Amsoil 10w40 and 75w90), spark plugs, wires, distributor cap + rotor - battery, A/C and alternator belts, timing belt checked and seems to be fresh, A/C converted to R134 and works. I have no information on t-belt replacement and go off the look of the current one. - Windshield wipers, also hard to find correct type. Now about imperfections, she is 24 years old, after all: - One 1/8” round dimple above right rear wheel, touched up. - Some mild dents on the roof (see pictures), not noticeable from few feet away. I was told that those are repairable by dent repair service, without paint. - T-Top shades are missing, eBay has those for around $150. T-Top bags are also gone with the previous owner. - Original doughnut spare wheel is replaced with one of the original 14” wheels, it fits perfect and provides better safety. I do not have the original spare. - Power antenna is intact, but does not work. I have spare aftermarket unit that I can include with sale. - There are some tiny bumps in the fiberglass material on the rear wing corners, wing itself is perfect. I have seen those on other cars, developing over time. - Driver door speaker does not work, I just noticed it. - There is small dent on the bottom of the muffler (see picture), it is not noticeable and does not affect functionality. - Paint is showing some minor fading and few minor scratches, driver mirror has some clear coat peeling off. - Interior is in great shape, however floor mats are not original, but high quality and fit very well.
