Camper, transporter, pickup truck, house on wheels, tour guide, whatever it is, the VW bus has done it. This 1968 Volkswagen bus is just a wonderful way to grab all of that history and keep it for yourself, all wrapped in a familiar yet surprisingly stylish body. A vintage VW resto shop has obviously lavished a lot of time and attention on this bus and the results are very impressive. It's definitely low-key with its serious gray and white paint scheme, but the paint is fresh, deep and all-around great. Note the clean, unadorned lines accentuated not by graphics or art but by laser-straight bodywork and deep, shiny paintwork that only comes from pros doing their thing. The two-tone combination is quite period-correct and gives the bus a jaunty appearance despite the more somber colors. Other things like the painted bumpers and big chrome VW emblem in the center are trademarks that VW faithful can recognize from a mile away and a canvas sunroof up top makes it as bright and airy inside as you'd expect. Tinted glass also provides a modicum of privacy as well as adding to the sleek look that makes the VW so special. The interior is really where these vehicles shine. Totally restored, it offers great colors and basic accommodations for passengers, but the style is impressive. The bright orange upholstery is a wonderful contrast to the gray exterior and the original-style vinyl will last practically forever. Proper side panels and door panels give it a very finished look and the original-style headliner overhead keeps it authentic. The front seats offer a commanding view of the road completely free of obstructions, and the bus-like driving position is actually comfortable for long trips, which is really what these buses were designed to do. Basic instrumentation was provided by the factory, and this one has been augmented with much more important gauges like a cylinder head temperature gauge, an oil temperature gauge (remember the VW is air cooled), oil pressure gauge, and a voltmeter. You'll also be pleased to see an upgraded stereo system with an AM/FM/CD head unit and speakers in the kick panel ahead of the front seat. And in addition to three rows of seats, there's a reasonably large and nicely upholstered package shelf atop the engine bay in back. The new crate engine is a relatively high-performance version of the Beetle's venerable flat-four. Displacing 1776 cc, it's big enough to provide some added punch without sacrificing reliability and with twin-port heads, it breathes a lot more freely which means more power. Oversized carburetors help with power production and the engine bay is as neatly detailed as the rest of the bus. A mild cam and upgraded pistons help deliver energetic performance and a remote oil filter and Empi oil cooler are on hand for improved reliability. Headers and a performance muffler extract every bit of horsepower from the little boxer engine and it has a great exhaust note that's instantly familiar and will bring a smile to your face. The underside is in very good condition and with a 4-speed manual transmission, it is a lot of fun to drive. Standard steel wheels with color-matched hubcaps and 185/65/14 radials look traditional and custom at the same time. If you're a fan of VW buses, this is a great one that might be considered a resto-mod. Everything that was done only enhances what was already great, making it one of the best we've seen. 1961 23-Window VW Bus for Sale Buy This Classic 1961 VW 23-Window Bus Original 23 Window Deluxe Samba VW Bus, Nut & Bolt Rotisserie Restoration Just Completed, Birth Certificate, Safari Windows, 9 Passenger Van! This is a beautifully restored 1961 23 Window VW Bus for sale. The 23 Window Deluxe is widely viewed as the most prized VW Bus ever made. Nothing beats the view out the sunroof and skylights on a beautiful day driving through the mountains, country or woods. Just 64,986 of these Deluxe 23 Window Microbuses were made during all years of production 1951-1963. To put that in perspective, a total of 76,000 Porsche 356s were produced before it was replaced by the 911 and 912, and you know how rare it is to see a Porsche 356 of those on the road today. This VW Bus is even rarer. It is a very special and rare opportunity indeed to find a VW 23 Window for sale in this condition. The restoration on this 23 Window VW Bus was just completed in May of 2014. The bus has been driven just a few test miles and is still absolutely perfect (I have driven it only about 3 miles since it was finished). I trailered the bus to the Bug In VW Show June 1st and the bus took first place in stock pre '67 VW Buses. An article on the show including photos of this bus is featured in the October 2014 issue of Hot VWs magazine. A full feature on my '57 Bus will be in the January Issue of Hot VWs and this 1961 Samba will also be shown in the photos in the upcoming article. You may wonder what sets certain restored Samba buses apart from the rest, and it comes down to the quality of the interior, body work, paint, and the completeness and correctness of the interior and the inclusion of all the deluxe-only items. This bus has the correct rear "jail bars" protecting the windows including the deluxe bar on the rear seat. The bumpers have the correct deluxe trim. The rear air vents have the chrome deluxe strips. And the paint on this bus is absolutely mirror-esque. There likely isn't a nicer 23 window VW Bus out there for sale. Every nut and bolt was taken off and the shell was sandblasted to bare metal. No expense was spared in the restoration.  The interior material alone was $6,000 (not including the installation). As I mentioned already, there likely isn't a nicer 23 Window VW Bus out there for sale. This is an investment quality vehicle that will remain at the top of market as values continue to rise over time. I wouldn't be surprised if these rare 23 Window Deluxe Sambas topped a half million dollars in the coming decade. If you look through the completed auctions you will see a grey 23 Window that was listed at $169k (and that bus doesn't even have the deluxe bar on the rear seat or the deluxe trim on the rear air vents). Nice examples of correctly restored 23 Window Buses have already topped $200k. 2011 saw a 1963 23-Window Samba sell for $217,800 at the Barrett Jackson auction (including the buyer's premium). Here is a great opportunity to buy this rare Deluxe 23 Window Bus and avoid the costly 8% buyers fee charged by the major auction houses. I purchased this bus from Florida in 2010. The previous owner used to drive this bus to the beach to sell hats he made out of palm leaves. (He would climb the trees, grab palms and make the hats right in this van.) I promised the previous owner I would treat the bus to a first class restoration. So after a year of raising funds, I sent the bus to Jeff Gagnon of Vintage VW in Sioux Falls, SD to start the restoration. Over the following two and a half years Jeff performed a complete rotisserie restoration. The end result is breathtaking. Jeff specializes in restoring rare and unique classic VW Buses. He restored my beautiful dove blue 1959 Double Door Panel Van that can be found in the Cars Sold section of my Sunset Classics Web Site. He also restored a Velvet Green '66 Deluxe Bus of mine that is also in the Cars Sold section of my Site. His paint and bodywork are unrivaled. He said this '61 Samba Bus is the straightest VW Bus he's ever built. The long sides shine like a flat mirror and the paint finish and bodywork are far nicer than even when this bus was brand new. The "birth certificate" from the VW Factory in Germany confirms that this Deluxe Samba was manufactured August 24th, 1960. Model years were started in August of the previous year, so even though this bus was made in 1960 it is a 1961 model year. There is virtually no difference between the '60-'61 model years other than a bump in engine horsepower from 36 to 40. That bump wasn't enough to help the original buses get out of their own way (let alone climb a hill without downshifting) so you will be pleased to learn this bus has a very strong and reconditioned engine featuring duel 40mm IDF carburetors and electronic ignition. Driving this Deluxe VW Bus will require less maintenance and is far more convenient than one with a very weak original hp engine. Merging and keeping up with traffic in this Deluxe Bus will be easy and enjoyable. We can land a vehicle to any port worldwide handling container traffic. We export cars regularly and are familiar with export requirements. You, or your agent, are responsible for Custom clearing the vehicle and registration in your own country.

Restored red 1973 VW Thing that spent all its life in southern California. Runs great. No oil leaks period! Zero rust or body damage. Rebuilt original motor that purrs. Clutch and brakes are excellent. Tires are almost brand new. The top was replaced just 2 weeks ago and looks and fits perfect. Comes with the glass side curtains instead of the cheaper plastic curtains. All seats are in perfect condition also. New hubcaps, seat belts, tail light and front turn signal lenses. New "Thing" rocker panel graphics. The car was repainted a couple of years ago and is a 10 footer. Not perfect, but nice. Windshield wipers stopped working. The car is equipped with the optional heater, but I have not tested it. This is not your average fixer upper VW Thing. This car is complete and beautiful. Please email me if you have any questions. A non refundable deposit of $500.00 is due within 48 hours. Balance due within 7 days. Buyer is responsible for shipping or pick up of vehicle. Car must be picked up no later than 10 days of purchase. It may look like the illegitimate love child of a corrugated shipping container and a dumpster, but the Volkswagen Thing was in fact the resurrection of a German military vehicle known as the Kübelwagen. More than a specific model, the Kübelwagen was a concept; consider how Americans tend to call any military runabout a Jeep, and you've got the idea. And with Kübel meaning "bucket" and Wagen meaning "car," what could have been a better name for such a steel tub than, of course, the Thing? But VW's convertible breadbox was called the Thing only in North America, where it went on sale in 1973; it was known elsewhere as the Trekker, the Safari, or, simply, the Type 181 (right-hand-drive models were called the Type 182). The Thing was built on the same chassis as the pre-1968 Microbus and was propelled by VW's air-cooled, 46-hp, 1600-cc flat four. A four-speed manual was the only transmission. Acceleration was ludicrously slow: 0 to 60 mph took more than 23 seconds. They only came in 3 original colors Pumpkin Orange, Sunshine Yellow and Blizard White. The interior was the very definition of stripped. The only instrumentation was a speedometer that housed a fuel gauge on its dial, and the glove box was really just a glove hole, since it lacked a door. VW also boasted that the Thing's cabin could be hosed out.It wasn't conveniences or ability that sucked people in, though--it was how screwy the Thing was. The windshield folded and the detachable doors were swappable front to rear. Warmth was provided by an optional gasoline-fueled heater hooked directly to the fuel tank. Most important, however, was that the Thing looked so very, very weird. It wasn't the vehicle a housewife or a two-term Republican or anybody normal would buy. Naturally, America's youth loved the Thing--the only problem was that few of them could afford it. In 1973, the Thing cost $3150, almost as much as many sports cars and nearly $1000 more than the '73 Beetle. Prices dropped slightly for 1974, but the Thing remained expensive for such simple transportation. To downplay this fact, Volkswagen advertising talked up the Thing's modest off-road ability and pitted it against more expensive trucks such as the Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser. But the two-wheel-drive Thing, with its four-wheel independent suspension, had as much chance of keeping up with an FJ40 on the trails as a roller-derby queen with an inner-ear problem. In 1973, Ralph Nader pushed to have the Thing pulled from the U.S. market on the grounds that it failed to meet safety standards for passenger cars. He soon got his wish, as tightened regulations forced VW to stop importation after the 1974 model year. Only about 25,000 examples were imported, and the Thing remains as goofy and unusual today as it was thirty years ago. Since so many parts are shared with the Beetle and the Microbus, the Thing is inexpensive to run and maintain--but what else would you expect from a bucket car?

Nicely maintained with a pop-up camper top and a strong-running engine, it lives up to the legend and puts a smile on everyone's face who sees it. Bright, sunny yellow works better on air-cooled Volkswagens than just about anything else, and when it was repainted a few years ago, it was exactly the right choice. It isn't the VW's original color, but nobody's checking pedigrees and it'll make finding your way home in a crowded field of campers that much easier. Fit and finish are typical VW, which is to say well above average, and while it has certainly been driven and enjoyed a bit, the overall look is a bus that's been loved. The front-mounted spare is possible because there's no radiator to worry about and the pop-up camper roof (not an OEM, but rather an ASI/Riviera conversion) keeps a low profile so the humble good looks are preserved. A few splashes of chrome like the bumpers and door handles add interest and there's a trailer hitch out back for a (very) small trailer. Inside is where the action is, with a pair of swiveling bucket seats up front and a panoramic view through that giant windshield. In back, there are decent living quarters for a small family, including a dining booth that converts to a bed. The upholstery is in excellent condition with funky curtains that add to the VW's inviting look. Clever storage cubbies abound and the carpets are in very good condition considering that this bus can also be a home. A Sony AM/FM/cassette stereo provides adequate entertainment both on the road and at the campsite and the gauges are original and in good shape. The pop-up roof adds headroom and sleeping space and remains quite usable save for needing new screens, and new tops are still available and very reasonably priced. The whole thing's pretty darned neat, if you ask me. VW's erstwhile and utterly reliable air-cooled flat four won't get you there quickly, but it will unquestionably get you there. This is actually one of the best-running VWs of any sort we've featured, and someone's obviously taken exceptional care of the mechanicals inside this bus. It starts easily and pulls with surprising gusto (it's all relative), and it has one of the most precise VW shifters (again, relative) that we've experienced. There's not much to look at in there, but you'll see signs of regular maintenance and correct replacement parts, not some hacked-up project by a backyard mechanic, and the ever-charming exhaust note will announce your presence before you even arrive. The underside is in good order with a remarkably uniform covering of dust and surface scale, but nothing seems to be amiss and again, there are signs that this VW has always been loved. Disc brakes up front, along with a rather large sway bar, make it feel confident in traffic and the ride is plush on the open road, where it cruises happily at 60 MPH. Standard steel wheels are painted white and wear VW hubcaps, along with a set of recent 180/75/14 blackwall radials. America's love for the VW Microbus is alive and well, and owning this one makes you a member of a very enthusiastic group of folks.
