Clutch and brakes are excellent. Tires are almost brand new. The top was replaced just 2 weeks ago and looks and fits perfect. Comes with the glass side curtains instead of the cheaper plastic curtains. All seats are in perfect condition also. New hubcaps, seat belts, tail light and front turn signal lenses. New "Thing" rocker panel graphics. The car was repainted a couple of years ago and is a 10 footer. Not perfect, but nice. Windshield wipers stopped working. It may look like the illegitimate love child of a corrugated shipping container and a dumpster, but the Volkswagen Thing was in fact the resurrection of a German military vehicle known as the Kübelwagen. More than a specific model, the Kübelwagen was a concept; consider how Americans tend to call any military runabout a Jeep, and you've got the idea. And with Kübel meaning "bucket" and Wagen meaning "car," what could have been a better name for such a steel tub than, of course, the Thing?But VW's convertible breadbox was called the Thing only in North America, where it went on sale in 1973; it was known elsewhere as the Trekker, the Safari, or, simply, the Type 181 (right-hand-drive models were called the Type 182). The Thing was built on the same chassis as the pre-1968 Microbus and was propelled by VW's air-cooled, 46-hp, 1600-cc flat four. A four-speed manual was the only transmission. Acceleration was ludicrously slow: 0 to 60 mph took more than 23 seconds. They only came in 3 original colors Pumpkin Orange, Sunshine Yellow and Blizard White. The interior was the very definition of stripped. The only instrumentation was a speedometer that housed a fuel gauge on its dial, and the glove box was really just a glove hole, since it lacked a door. VW also boasted that the Thing's cabin could be hosed out.It wasn't conveniences or ability that sucked people in, though--it was how screwy the Thing was. The windshield folded and the detachable doors were swappable front to rear. Warmth was provided by an optional gasoline-fueled heater hooked directly to the fuel tank. Most important, however, was that the Thing looked so very, very weird. It wasn't the vehicle a housewife or a two-term Republican or anybody normal would buy. Naturally, America's youth loved the Thing--the only problem was that few of them could afford it. In 1973, the Thing cost $3150, almost as much as many sports cars and nearly $1000 more than the '73 Beetle. Prices dropped slightly for 1974, but the Thing remained expensive for such simple transportation. To downplay this fact, Volkswagen advertising talked up the Thing's modest off-road ability and pitted it against more expensive trucks such as the Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser. But the two-wheel-drive Thing, with its four-wheel independent suspension, had as much chance of keeping up with an FJ40 on the trails as a roller-derby queen with an inner-ear problem. Sure, it's still transportation, but this car was built to put a big grin on your face and nothing else. It offers lots of recent work, so it's not only great looking but also ready to enjoy. We can all but guarantee you'll be the only guy tooling around in one of these even though the look is instantly familiar. Unlike, say, the Myers Manx, this is strictly a 2-seater and that gives it neat proportions that look great, as if it were a cross between a dune buggy and a T-bucket. Long, flowing fenders contrast with the squared-off deck in back, but the whole design is very professional and well-executed so nothing looks sub-standard. Repainted two years ago, the fiberglass is in good condition with no major signs of age and a great gloss that's quite appropriate to something of this vintage. This is motoring down to its barest essence, so there isn't much chrome save for the bug-eyed headlights up front and that big, upright windshield. In back, the VW Beetle engine becomes an integral part of the overall look and it's fascinating to watch this sucker run down the road. More minimalism inside where simple pleated black vinyl looks good, wears well, and is weather-resistant enough for its alfresco duties. Hop over the side of the tub and it's easy to settle in behind the wheel and you'll find that the driving position is more early British roadster than German economy car, and with those big pontoon fenders out there, you can clip apexes more easily than you ever thought possible. Creature comforts are few and that's entirely the point here; anything that wasn't necessary for the job of having fun was omitted. That means no windshield wipers, no heater, not even a radio, simply because you'll be blasting along having too much fun to need to worry about additional entertainment. The VW's original gauge pod was neatly installed in the dash and aftermarket turn signals are affixed to the side of the steering column for safety's sake. Floor coverings are institutional and easy to maintain, which is this car's mantra. VW's air-cooled flat four needs no introduction, and this 1493 cc unit provides plenty of power for the flyweight dune buggy. Painted bright red to match the bodywork, the engine is equipped with the usual hop-up parts, including a bigger carburetor that was installed in June 2014, and exotic exhaust headers with chrome tips that are as much styling element as noise suppression system. The Beetle's 4-speed manual transmission and floor pan made the transition intact and with the low center of gravity, handling is adept. Obviously this was never someone's winter beater, so the underside remains in very good order with no glaring trouble spots. Lots of finned aluminum helps with the air-cooled engine at seed and you'll undoubtedly find that this car loves to play. Oddly enough, GM Rally wheels bolt right on and now carry 205/70/15 front and 235/60/15 rear tires that look positively gigantic on the tiny car's frame. This car also comes with a tow bar to be used behind, say, an RV, suggesting that someone has already realized that a vacation on wheels is what this car is all about. It may look like the illegitimate love child of a corrugated shipping container and a dumpster, but the Volkswagen Thing was in fact the resurrection of a German military vehicle known as the Kübelwagen. More than a specific model, the Kübelwagen was a concept; consider how Americans tend to call any military runabout a Jeep, and you've got the idea. And with Kübel meaning "bucket" and Wagen meaning "car," what could have been a better name for such a steel tub than, of course, the Thing?But VW's convertible breadbox was called the Thing only in North America, where it went on sale in 1973; it was known elsewhere as the Trekker, the Safari, or, simply, the Type 181 (right-hand-drive models were called the Type 182). The Thing was built on the same chassis as the pre-1968 Microbus and was propelled by VW's air-cooled, 46-hp, 1600-cc flat four. A four-speed manual was the only transmission. Acceleration was ludicrously slow: 0 to 60 mph took more than 23 seconds. They only came in 3 original colors Pumpkin Orange, Sunshine Yellow and Blizard White. The interior was the very definition of stripped. The only instrumentation was a speedometer that housed a fuel gauge on its dial, and the glove box was really just a glove hole, since it lacked a door. VW also boasted that the Thing's cabin could be hosed out.It wasn't conveniences or ability that sucked people in, though--it was how screwy the Thing was. The windshield folded and the detachable doors were swappable front to rear. Warmth was provided by an optional gasoline-fueled heater hooked directly to the fuel tank. Most important, however, was that the Thing looked so very, very weird. It wasn't the vehicle a housewife or a two-term Republican or anybody normal would buy. Naturally, America's youth loved the Thing--the only problem was that few of them could afford it. In 1973, the Thing cost $3150, almost as much as many sports cars and nearly $1000 more than the '73 Beetle. Prices dropped slightly for 1974, but the Thing remained expensive for such simple transportation. To downplay this fact, Volkswagen advertising talked up the Thing's modest off-road ability and pitted it against more expensive trucks such as the Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser. But the two-wheel-drive Thing, with its four-wheel independent suspension, had as much chance of keeping up with an FJ40 on the trails as a roller-derby queen with an inner-ear problem. In 1973, Ralph Nader pushed to have the Thing pulled from the U.S. market on the grounds that it failed to meet safety standards for passenger cars. He soon got his wish, as tightened regulations forced VW to stop importation after the 1974 model year. Only about 25,000 examples were imported, and the Thing remains as goofy and unusual today as it was thirty years ago. Since so many parts are shared with the Beetle and the Microbus, the Thing is inexpensive to run and maintain--but what else would you expect from a bucket car?

1973 VW Thing ..Good solid daily driver Quick History ,An Older gentleman I know has had this car since 1983.Ive been after him to sell me this car for years .I finally got it about two years ago with plans to build a good dependable daily driver.Ive since purchased an all electric car and don't drive it and its the LAST of my vw collection.I want it to go to a nice home. CONDITION Ill start by saying this is not a show car .. ..What it is ,is a good solid ,dependable driver.When I bought it I went through the brakes an replaced the shoes and slave cylinders The brakes are great.I had my mechanic go through the engine ,basically new pistons and cylinders as well as fuel pump,carb,fuel lines ,plugs, wires, points .It has a new battery.The car runs great .Its not super fast or anything but ive driven it on 100 degree days and its never overheated or acted funny.I have once or twice had a hard time starting it once hot ..but that's a vw for ya.Oh yeah ..the engine is a 1600 bug engine .it does not have the skid plate (although I have it and you will get it with the purchase) .Nor does it have factory Thing exaust.Whats on it works well though.All n All You just need a small amount of time to finish assembly of the wipers and such and a few Minor things for detailing and such.I just no longer have time and need the space in my shop ! OK the body.The floor is in OK condition .in the past someone made a patch for the battery tray and its working ,there are some cracks in the floor that have been brazed up.but it is the OG floor and needs nothing to carry on.All the doors are OK and work fine.One of them has some wonky bends around the inside edge(drivers rear).(I have a replacement white door for this one,I just didn't take any pics of it) .There is no rust in the body at all.the engine compartment is solid as well .fenders look good as does the windshield frame .the hood does have a small dent from of all things a squirrel falling out of a tree onto it.Now ...the top,top,frame,bow are all new (least a year old anyway) and are from the Thing Shop.No Top can compare to their quality and it shows.Car also has Glass Sliding Windows ,These are absolutely THE BEST windows and Ive had them on every thing Ive ever Owned .They were not cheap at all..But trust me if you ever have a set you will never go back to the plastic ones. The wheels and Tires are also less than a year old.They are 17 inch and the tires have less than 500 total miles on them.The car has been lowered a tad by adjusters and could really use some new shocks.The rear bumper is fine ,needing a blast and pain job.the front one I did bump into my wifes car and bent it a tad.(see pic) fully repairable I just haven't gotten around to it . The gas heater was working last winter .It stopped toward the end of the season and I do know whats wrong with it .With purchase of the car you will get a spare heater(not pictured) a good and tested pump and some new line to run to the heater as well as the tee.(its disconnected as of this moment) Other electrical components The car has NO radio,The head lights and taillights work fine .the turn signals work sometimes.I do have a brand new turn signal as well as a new wiper switch that you will get in the purchase.(not pictured)The wiper motor and wipers are not on the car but you will get all that stuff.The car was in boxes when I bought it and I don't drive it in rain so just never got around to installing it . This vehicle is from the collection of a long time customer. It is a 1973 VW Type 181, commonly called "the Thing" here in the U.S. This is a real German military radio vehicle originally assigned to a medical unit. It has just 43k kilometers making it a very low mileage piece. Apparently the radio cars were only used during manuevers which may be why the mileage is so low. The current owner purchased the vehicle from a dealer that specializes in importing European trucks and military vehicles. It has been here in NC since 2002 and does have a proper NC title, registration, insurance etc. So transferring ownership will be no problem. This vehicle is roadworthy and has just had a thorough service necessary after a few years of non use. This included cleaning the engine, a new carb, tune up, oil change, fuel tank cleaning, fuel lines & filters, shocks, brake master cyl, wheel cylinders, shoes, new tires etc. The vehicle is very complete and original as seen in the photos. The military version is slightly different from the "Things" we got here. The tranmission is set up with reduction gearing (like a split window bus) and of course it has gun holders and specific equipment. Sure, it's still transportation, but this car was built to put a big grin on your face and nothing else. It offers lots of recent work, so it's not only great looking but also ready to enjoy. We can all but guarantee you'll be the only guy tooling around in one of these even though the look is instantly familiar. Unlike, say, the Myers Manx, this is strictly a 2-seater and that gives it neat proportions that look great, as if it were a cross between a dune buggy and a T-bucket. Long, flowing fenders contrast with the squared-off deck in back, but the whole design is very professional and well-executed so nothing looks sub-standard. Repainted two years ago, the fiberglass is in good condition with no major signs of age and a great gloss that's quite appropriate to something of this vintage. This is motoring down to its barest essence, so there isn't much chrome save for the bug-eyed headlights up front and that big, upright windshield. In back, the VW Beetle engine becomes an integral part of the overall look and it's fascinating to watch this sucker run down the road. More minimalism inside where simple pleated black vinyl looks good, wears well, and is weather-resistant enough for its alfresco duties. Hop over the side of the tub and it's easy to settle in behind the wheel and you'll find that the driving position is more early British roadster than German economy car, and with those big pontoon fenders out there, you can clip apexes more easily than you ever thought possible. Creature comforts are few and that's entirely the point here; anything that wasn't necessary for the job of having fun was omitted. That means no windshield wipers, no heater, not even a radio, simply because you'll be blasting along having too much fun to need to worry about additional entertainment. The VW's original gauge pod was neatly installed in the dash and aftermarket turn signals are affixed to the side of the steering column for safety's sake. Floor coverings are institutional and easy to maintain, which is this car's mantra. VW's air-cooled flat four needs no introduction, and this 1493 cc unit provides plenty of power for the flyweight dune buggy. Painted bright red to match the bodywork, the engine is equipped with the usual hop-up parts, including a bigger carburetor that was installed in June 2014, and exotic exhaust headers with chrome tips that are as much styling element as noise suppression system. The Beetle's 4-speed manual transmission and floor pan made the transition intact and with the low center of gravity, handling is adept. Obviously this was never someone's winter beater, so the underside remains in very good order with no glaring trouble spots. Lots of finned aluminum helps with the air-cooled engine at seed and you'll undoubtedly find that this car loves to play. Oddly enough, GM Rally wheels bolt right on and now carry 205/70/15 front and 235/60/15 rear tires that look positively gigantic on the tiny car's frame. This car also comes with a tow bar to be used behind, say, an RV, suggesting that someone has already realized that a vacation on wheels is what this car is all about. This 1983 Rabbit is a true survivor. One of the few heard about, but seldom seen "Granny" cars. Estate sale. Purchased new in '83, garage kept. No AC, no power anything. Rare automatic transmission! Original AM/FM radio with antenna. Everything works, including clock. Included are a recent good back up battery, extra mud flaps, the original gas cap and oil filler cap, the original steering wheel with cover, the front plate frame, a set of good headlights. The VW monster mats in some of the pics are not included. The original mats are. Unfortunately no old service records, but a fairly complete car fax is available. Copies of all recent records included. Owners manual! 60k original miles! No rust, all original, except steering wheel, which I changed to the GTI style. Original comes with car. Dealer installed seat covers! The front seats appear brand new under them, just like the back seat. Brakes, struts, tires all fairly recent before I got the car. Granny took care of this thing. What I've done: New Bosal exhaust/muffler /Sylvania halogen sealed beam headlamps /New Bosch battery, plugs, rotor and plug wires. wiper blades/ New O2 sensor/ Oil, filter, transmission fluid and filter, fuel filter, air filter/ Motor mounts and transmission mount replaced /New drive belts,/ timing belt appears fairly recent./ New star style gas cap/ Original style key with duplicates. What does it need? Small dent on the front right fender. Right rear bumper has some minor damage. The headliner is sagging on the drivers side. It has the usual rattles around the glove box, the new mounts helped a lot. Quiets down when warmed up and in warm weather. It stalls on right turns when the fuel tank is at 1/2 or below. I rarely drive the car and have always kept the tank pretty full. I was driving the other day to warm it up and get it out of storage for the day when I discovered this.It always starts right up after stalling, but is annoying to say the least. Research has revealed that this is a very common problem with these cars, and replacing the fuel tank is the solution. Google "VW Rabbit right turn" and read the thread from VW Vortex. EBay will not let me add the link. A tank is relatively inexpensive, $100-150, and if you're a DIY er, shouldn't be too bad of a job. Otherwise a couple hours of labor. I am not able to do this repair due to a disability, and will offer the car for sale as is. It runs and drives great,as long as the tank is kept at or above about 1/2. Entered in Cincy VW show this year in the water cooled category. Didn't win, but got loads of great reviews. This is an original, unmolested/unmodded US built MK1 Rabbit. Shipping from Cincinnati is not included.
