For sale in our Detroit showroom is a 1970 AMC AMX. The AMX is a two-seat GT-style sports car that was produced by American Motors Corporation from 1968 to 1970. The AMX was also classified as a muscle car, but differed from other American cars at the time because of its short wheelbase. The name AMX is actually an acronym for American Motors eXperimental, which was a code assigned to concept vehicles in the mid-sixties. The AMX was also the only American-built steel-bodied two-seater of its time, the first since the 1955-1957 Ford Thunderbird , and rivaled the only other two-seat American muscle car: the Chevrolet Corvette. With a short three-year production run, the AMX was discontinued in 1970, and was replaced by the Javelin from %26acirc;??71-%26acirc;??74. This wild AMX makes quite the statement with the Ranger Splash Purple covering the cool and vintage bodylines. Under the hood is a 360 V8 that has been bored out to a 390, and with the sides pipes, produces a loud rumble that will turn some heads every time the pedal hits the floor. Since 3 pedals make a classic a blast to cruise around in, this AMC has an M-22 Muncie 4-speed. To keep with the pro-street theme, the car has been backhalfed and tubbed to fit the huge 33X21.50-15LT Mickey Thompson Sportsman tires, and the rear end is a Ford 9-inch with a 5.13 gears. The interior has been worked on as well, and features a 10-point rollcage, and no back seat to make room for the rear tires. The dash features Autometer gauges to monitor engine functions, and the seats also have Simpson racing harnesses to firmly hold you in place during hard launches. This 1968 AMC AMX Survivor is located in our Louisville KY showroom. In 1968 AMC would introduce the first all steel American Built two seater since Ford\'s 55-57 T-bird. Considered by many to be more of a competitor to the Corvette for substantially less money, the AMX set a number of records. Two specially prepared AMX\'s set a total of 106 world speed %26 endurance records in January 1968. Driven at Goodyear\'s track in Texas by Craig Breedlove, his wife Lee Breedlove and Ron Dykes. This Little AMX is a great example of what they came like considering it has not been touched. What you see is a true survivor that has been driven and maintained. Originally bought new in Louisville KY for the wife of the owner of an AMX dealership. The car has just about every option in 68 including AC and ofcourse the highly sought after \" Go Package\'\'. Yes that%26acirc;??s right this a completely authentic, beleived to be 3 owner, Go Pac car with factory AC. Under the hood the original 390 putting out 315 ponies with an asphalt pounding, tire shredding, lay down the nastiest burnout 425lb-ft it\'s no wonder they made such a limited number of them. With only 2287 automatics built that year and very few having the Go Pac option this are one of the rarest Muscle cars to come through this showroom. The power assisted brakes work excellent with a set of disc upfront bringing this little two seater to a quick stand still. The power steering is crisp and fluid with no dead spots anywhere in the turning range. The paint is in excellent condition considering it is 47 years old. Ofcourse it has some scratches and even a some dings but this an all original car that has never been touched by any Auto Body man. The rear quarters do show some surface rust but they are as with the rest of the car very very solid. Open the door and the red interior is all original with the carpet in actually great condition. The two bucket seats are original to the car and are quite comfortable with all of the support still seeming to be headliner is there though most likely will need to be replaced. All in all I think this an absolute piece of automotive history that we will most likely not see anything like it again. With it being a survivor car you can leave it alone and show it OR restore it and bring it back to its former glory. This article does not feature this car, but does give a nice description of these unique cars. The 1970 AMC Rebel Machine took American Motors into themidsize muscle car field. It wasn't the quiet entry it might have been. As evidence, there exists in the AMC archives a photo of a different, more sinister-looking midsize muscle proposal.The photo is of a black coupe with authoritative black wheels and fattires. No stripes, no scoops, no spoilers. Its body rakes forward in an aggressive, street-fighting stance. On the fender is a decal. It shows two gears chewing out the name of this macho prototype: "The Machine."Muscle Car Image GalleryThe photo is dated June 1968, and the car is a '69 Rebel. AMC's high-performance sedan efforts for '69 were focussed on the Rogue-based Hurst SC/Rambler, a brashly decorated compact as overstated as the black Rebel concept was understated. The SC/Rambler didn't survive into '70, but The Machine did. It was not, however, the malevolent rebel promised by the prototype, but a red, white, and blue jukebox of a car, clearly in the spirit of the SC/Rambler. "You have to say this for American Motors," observed Road Test magazine, "when they get their teeth into an idea they pursue it with a vengeance."©2007 Publications International, Ltd. The Machine's 390-cid four-barrel made 340 bhp and breathed through a Ram Air system that employed a vacuum-controlled hood-scoop flap.Luckily, The Machine was a pretty good performer. Like the SC/Scrambler, it used the AMX's ram-air 390-cid V-8, newly souped to 340 bhp. In its journey from concept to reality, The Machine gained a big hood scoop that served the engine via a vacuum-controlled butterfly valve. A Hurst-shifted four-speed was mandatory and came with a 3.54:1 axle. AMC's limited-slip diff was a $43 option, with a genuine DetroitLocker and ratios up to 5.00:1 available.©2007 Publications International, Ltd. A Hurst-shifted four-speed was standard. Note the tachometer integrated into the raised fairing on the hood scoop.The Machine was one of Detroit's most stiffly sprung muscle cars. Its extra-heavy-duty suspensionincluded firm station wagon rear springs, which elevated the tail and helped account for the raked look. With E60x15 tires, cornering ability was top-notch, but rear-axle juddering off the line prevented the willing, lightweight V-8 from propelling the car into the low-14-second range.The Machine turned out to be a one-year-only model, and after building the first 1,000 or so, AMC began offering it sans stripes and in any color. I am re-listing the car hoping someone will keep me from parting this out and selling it for scrap.-----------------------------------------------------Bought this car (saved it from the crusher) as a restoration project with my son. Divorce has forced a sale and with deep regret we need to depart with the project. This VIN number indicates it's an original 390 4-speed car. Door tag says it's an SST with a rare blue interior. If all true, the car appears to be pretty rare. ((PlanetHoustonAMX.com (Long-time AMC reputable source) has suggested only 2730 produced. Of that, I do not know how many were 4-speed cars)I do not have the original title but I do have: New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Retail Certificate of Sale for the vehicle (with VIN#), Vehicle Purchase agreement from the dealer whom I bought the car from (with VIN#), and the NY State Registration Renewal card from the previous owner dated back to 1980 (with VIN#). (see pic). All of them have matching VIN numbers so obtaining a new title (if required in your state) should not be a problem. In Illinois these documents are acceptable for a title replacement. But if you are unsure of your state, you can always use broadwaytitle.com. They are very good and easy to use. I believe this car is a Mark Donohue edition (original spoiler, options, etc) but as most AMC enthusiast know without original dealer documentation to prove it's authenticity, it's simply a Javelin. Most of the interior is there (blue door panels, blue seats, kick panels, dash parts, 140mph speedo, etc.) but of course it needs restoration. All the glass and mechanisms are there but missing the outside window trim.The body is relatively solid (for a 44 year old car). Most importantly the areas of concern are sound. i.e. shock towers, windshield A-pillars, roof, radiator support braces, leaf spring mounts, etc. Doors are OK with a few dings. Ram Air hood and Trunk lid have slight surface rust on the undersides but are also in great shape. However it does need fenders, quarters, and inner rocker panels (as do all AMC Javelins). Trunk floor pans and seat floor pans are OK. The car has a 3:54 axle with no drive train. I am listing the car as-is and the price does NOT include an engine or transmission. The car is in dry storage and can be seen by appointment. It took a lot to save this car and I had it shipped from NY to keep it from the crusher. I know I could recoup my costs and make a profit by parting it out, but as a life-long AMC collector, that goes against every fiber in my being. So, I would like to sell the car to someone with intentions to restore it (or at least lie to me and tell me you will) and prefer not to part it out. The price listed is exactly what I have into the car. I don't want to make money on it..only to pass it on. Feel free to ask me any questions at all.
