The first car to bear the name was the 1949 Coupe de Ville, a prestige trim level of the Series 62 luxury coupe. The last model to be formally known as a De Ville was the 2005 Cadillac DeVille, a full-size sedan, the largest car in the Cadillac model range at the time. The next year, the DeVille was officially renamed DTS (an abbreviation standing for DeVille Touring Sedan, itself a trim level on earlier models). As it had been since De Ville became a separate series, De Ville denoted Cadillac's mainstream model, falling between the Calais (which had replaced the Series 62) and the Sixty Special and Eldorado. The De Ville was redesigned for 1965 but rode on the same 129.5-inch (3,290 mm) wheelbase. Tailfins were canted slightly downward, and sharp, distinct body lines replaced the rounded look. Also new were a straight rear bumper and vertical lamp clusters. The headlight pairs switched from horizontal to vertical, thus permitting a wider grille. Curved frameless side windows appeared, and convertibles acquired tempered glass backlights. New standard features included lamps for luggage, glove and rear passenger compartments and front and rear safety belts. Power was still supplied by the 340 horsepower 429 cu in (7,030 cc) V8, which would be replaced by the 472 cu in (7,730 cc) for 1968. Perimeter frame construction allowed repositioning the engine six inches forward in the frame, thus lowering the transmission hump and increasing interior room. Pillared sedans appeared on the De Ville series for the first time, while six-window hardtop sedans were dropped. A padded vinyl roof was a $121 extra-cost option on the hardtop model. All four De Ville models had small "Tiffany-like" script nameplates on the ends of their rear fenders just above the chrome side molding. The dated tailfins were eliminated and replaced with a pair of blade-type rear fenders. The bodylines assumed a much crisper overall design theme. Noise was reduced, vibration and harshness lessened, and interior space was expanded. This was achieved with a new perimeter frame that replaced the outdated X-member arrangement of the late 1950s. This also allowed the engine to be moved forward six inches. For 1966, the changes were few. Mechanical features included a 340 horsepower, 429 cubic-inch V8 engine, mated to a Turbo Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic that first appeared in 1964. This is a fantastic original 1966 Cadillac DeVille convertible with a fully documented 91,000 original mile history the car has been in single ownership since 1970 and nearly every service and repair was done at Marvin K Brown San Diego’s Largest Cadillac dealer, we have every receipt since 1971. The vehicle wears its original paint with couple areas being retouched up and refreshed over the years. The top and black glass is original as is the interior. Carpets are fresh and like new. From 50,000 miles when purchased all necessary repairs were as needed At 82,000 miles the vehicle began undergoing several high dollar repairs the engine was overhauled, Shocks were done, brake master cylinder rebuilt, carburetor, heater core, Radiator, AC compressor, hydraulics for top, u-joints gaskets and seals, fuel system. Cosmetically over time trim pieces and interior items were replaced. Since the most recent owner the Radiator was again new, the AC was thoroughly gone through with new compressor. This is an extremely well cared for and babied automobile, no expense was spared in its upkeep. The vehicle trim and chrome shows some ware but no pitting or rot, its body is of a very solid California Car. The interior is comfortable and nice. This was decades before there were low monthly lease payment programs and long term 6-year financing with 0% interest and nothing down simply didn't exist. If this Cadillac was in your garage, you had truly arrived. The exterior was refinished in the original Aspen White some years ago and the workmanship was done to a good standard. It benefits from the classic shade, which accentuates the curves and the new lower profile, without looking massive. The paint was laid down on a straight body with factory tight panel gaps that still look great today. The massive front grill, with quad headlights used as bookends, first appeared in the '61 model year, while chrome trim strips run parallel along the hood and along the body. Tail fin height was in steady decline after the '59 model year and by '64, proportions were tasteful and sleek, not ostentatious. Altogether, this is a ton of sheetmetal for not a lot of cash and you can get a lot of car for your money with a mid-60s Cadillac like this. Inside, the red leather interior appears to be in excellent shape and has been carefully looked after by previous owners. Stylish diamond-tufted seat covers have an upscale look, especially with perforated leather seating surfaces, a look that would become popular with the Europeans in the coming years. C color-matched steering wheel with bright chrome accents feels like a proper helm for a land yacht like this and the ornate instrument panel puts everything within easy reach of the driver. The car is loaded with standard and optional features, including power windows, power seats, tilt wheel and the original AM/FM radio with both its knobs on the left side. Also note the device on the dashboard, popping up like some "War of the Worlds" ray gun which was the sensor for the Guide-Matic automatic headlight dimming system, also known as the Autronic Eye. Cool, right? Overhead there's a black power convertible top and it comes with a matching red boot perfect for parades. The trunk is mostly original, including the spare tire, which certainly looks like it dates from the Eisenhower era. Raise the hood and examine what appears to be the original engine bay, from the blue paint on the motor forward. The Cadillac has been maintained carefully over the years. This 4,700 lb. example of rolling art is motivated by Cadillac's 429 cubic inch V8 generating 340 horsepower, is easily up to the challenge to take the big ragtop wherever you point the wheels. Maybe it's because these luxurious drop tops have been glamorized for half a century by the likes of a Rock Hudson and Frank Sinatra. If you want to look ultra-cool, this 1968 Cadillac DeVille ragtop is the only way to travel, and with just one fussy owner until 2014, you know this one is something special. The first thing you see of course is the paint and so this DeVille's opening statement is a good one. With 21 factory colors to choose from, not all the colors improve upon this classic design, but certain choices will never go out of style. Grecian White is a laudable choice, as it emphasizes the traditional Cadillac design cues: long, sweeping profile, pointed vestigial tailfins, and crisp detailing. We believe this is the car's original paint, perhaps with a clear coat finish on top, and it remains in good overall condition today. The black convertible top is a refreshing change from the originally-specified brown and helps to place our '68 a bit apart from the crowd. Of course these cars were bathed in chrome trim and it's all still here and in extremely well-preserved condition, including the pontoon-style front bumper ends, whose condition verifies this car's dry southern heritage. Make no mistake, this is a fantastic survivor that really stands out. Open the door and have a look inside. Along with the white paint, it's likely that the interior is original as well, once again speaking to the preservation and care that this car has enjoyed over the years. The tan seats were called "Saddle" by GM, and aside from some minor wrinkles in the leather, it's shockingly well-preserved. The quality materials will be easy to care for and wear well, and there's just nothing like top-of-the-line '60s style. And enjoying a Cadillac includes creature comforts: A/C, power steering, power brakes, power windows, tilt wheel, AM/FM radio, and the power top are at your fingertips. A wide instrument panel puts all the controls at the driver's fingertips as well as an auxiliary temperature gauge hanging under the dash. The black convertible top is just two years old and drops down in seconds, just like 1968, and stows beneath a matching tan boot. Being a Cadillac, there's also a giant trunk which includes a full-sized space tire with jack assembly. The engine is the original, numbers-matching 472 cubic inch V8 that was a nice upgrade over the 429 used in 1967. Rated at 375 HP and producing a towering 525 pounds of torque, this engine was famous for both performance and reliability. Meticulously maintained since new, it handles the Deville's weight and mass without complaint, gracefully motivating this classic down the parkway. It's also nicely detailed, with a satisfying OEM look, including the gold air cleaner and Cadillac blue engine. A TH400 3-speed automatic transmission runs through the gears correctly and without complaint, and the exhaust system gives it a nice muted hum that sounds suitably powerful without ever getting annoying. The chassis is solid, although unrestored and not detailed for show, and wears 235/75/15 white walls tires that frame those handsome hubcaps nicely. This car was made when America was landing on the moon and the phrase "Standard of the World" really meant something.
