Designed as a halo model to attempt to stall Studebaker's inevitable demise, the gorgeous Speedster remains an icon of 1950s design and one heck of a good-looking car. Perhaps most notable about these cars are the color combinations, and none is more stunning than the Hialeah Green and Sun Valley Yellow combination on this one. Fondly referred to as "lemon and lime" for obvious reasons, it is a correct and authentic combination that was a popular choice on these sleek coupes, but only if you love being the center of attention. Refinished a few years ago, this one is more correct than most, using bold shades to create more contrast, but with the right soft green and pastel yellow hues, it allows Raymond Loewy's dramatic coupe's sheetmetal to really stand out. Workmanship is quite good, and although time waits for no man or car, this is likely the best example of these one-year only beauties we've ever seen. Heck, the chrome bill alone for the many unique details was probably half of the asking price. Gaps are tight, the windows (including the irreplaceable rear window) are excellent, and the dramatic side trim is in very good original condition with only a few minor blemishes. The primary difference between the Speedster and its more common cousin, the President, is inside, where this one sports striking quilted yellow leather. The brilliant look is certainly equal to the eyeball appeal of the bodywork, and when it was professionally restored a few years ago by the Stude legends at Slick Street, they took their time and got the details right. Authentic door panels, replacement carpet, a trim headliner, beautiful dash, and those outrageous diamond-tufted seats give you a good idea of what the authentic materials looked like in 1955, and when you slip inside you're instantly transported back in time. And those power windows are from the factory! It really is remarkably well preserved and while there are a few signs of use, it's very presentable. The gauges are crisp and bright, and the original AM radio is still in the dash. The large trunk has recently been fitted with a correct and original mat, and the full-sized spare tire wears a matching cover. Even the engine is the same 259 cubic inch V8 found in the rest of the President lineup. Called the "Passmaster," it generates a respectable 185 horsepower and moves the sleek coupe with a wonderful V8 exhaust note. The engine bay is nicely detailed with a correct air cleaner assembly and matching gold valve covers. The complicated-looking device on the left front fender is the power brake system that help the front discs meet their potential, and it also includes power steering for a truly luxurious experience. Recent wiring, correct finishes, and a brand new burbling dual exhaust system give it a great personality and the reliability you want. The transmission shifts easily and the chassis is clean and solid, again indicative of a nicely preserved car that has always been loved. Gorgeous chrome wire hubcaps were standard on the Speedster and are wrapped in 215/75/15 whitewall radials. All the looks, style, and flash of the '50s in a rare and desirable package. Wearing fantastic period colors, and a ton of chrome, this cool cruiser is sure to stand out at any car show and provides V8 power to back it up. As far as we can tell, those are the original colors, Tangerine over Snowcap White, and if you're going to own a car from the 1950s, why not get one with the ultimate '50s color combination? Quite honestly, it works rather well with the somewhat conservative-looking bodywork, and with a great soft gloss, it looks exactly right. All four doors fit well and the gaps line up neatly, so someone invested in getting this car back into shape during the restoration. The Stude's many unique details are a big part of its appeal, many of which have been borrowed by customizers for decades; just check out the peaked taillights, the exhaust pipes poking out through the bumper ends, and the hooded headlights. And no discussion of a '50s car is complete without mentioning the chrome and stainless trim, all of which is in good shape and represents a rather sizeable investment all by itself. The interior's mix of colors, textures, and materials looks very period-correct and the wide bench seats are a simple contrast to the high-impact bodywork. Black carpets, two-tone door panels, and a few details painted Tangerine highlight the comfortable interior. The cloth upholstery remains in good condition with only light signs of use and age while the back seat looks almost new. The instrument panel is a very cool design with the speedometer perched up high in its own pod and conventional round auxiliary gauges in the dash below; is this the first heads-up display? The original AM radio remains in the dash and while it doesn't play music, it does power up so perhaps a repair will be easy. Seat belts were added during the restoration, always a welcome safety improvement, but otherwise this Stude remains pretty much as the factory intended. As you'd expect, the trunk is truly massive and offers a correct mat, a full-sized spare on a matching fifth wheel, and even a jack assembly. Studebaker's 289 cubic inch V8 is torquey and smooth in the big President sedan, and while it's not about performance, it moves rather well. The engine bay is very stock, complete with a factory air cleaner assembly, 2-barrel carburetor, and turquoise engine enamel. Little details like the generator, hose clamps, and wiring are factory-spec, lending this Stude a very authentic look under the hood. It starts easily and runs well with a muted V8 soundtrack from the dual exhaust system, and the 2-speed automatic transmission shifts well and generally stays out of the way. Highway-friendly gears in the rear end mean that the President cruises easily at modern speeds without working too hard and the ride is luxury car smooth. 205/70/15 whitewall radials wrapped around color-matched steel wheels and hubcaps add an air of distinction to the big President and complete the '50s look. This car also includes a lot of Studebaker period literature and a factory build sheet, making it a great addition to any Studebaker lover's collection. Documentation Fee: There will be a $195.00 fee added to each car sold. This includes title transfer, inventory tax, holding costs, vehicle preparation, storage and priority documentation delivery. We will not be responsible for buyer’s remorse or problems found to said vehicle once they have left our property. We are just being realistic; most of the cars we deal in are vintage and by their very nature will need TLC and some degree of attention sooner or later. These are not new cars and your expectation should not be of a perfect, new car. Once full payment has been received, Seller will email or fax a copy of clear title, Bill of Sale, Buyers Guide and additional DMV forms to the Buyer to sign and return via email or fax. The fully-executed forms must be returned to the Seller prior to the shipment of said vehicle. Original paperwork will be sent to Buyer via USPS Priority Mail within ten (10) days from date of final payment. Transportation For a quote on shipping anywhere in the world, please feel free to email us at [email protected] or call 636-600-4600. We will give you an estimated cost for open and enclosed transport or overseas. We are happy to accommodate our international buyers! Over the last several decades we have exported thousands of cars to Norway, Germany, Estonia, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, Alaska, Costa Rica, Brazil, British Columbia, Canada and many other locations around the world. Overseas shipments will be placed into a steel container for safe sea passage or optional roll-on/roll-off (RoRo). We take care of all the details and paperwork. All you have to do is collect the car at your nearest port and enjoy! Please note that we are not a transport company and only offer this service as a convenience to our customers. You are more than welcome to arrange your own shipping. Transportation will commence only after final payment and signed documentation are received. Financing We offer financing through many of the best lenders in the industry. They are currently offering very attractive rates for all collector and special interest automobiles. With loan amounts from $10,000 to $500,000, and flexible terms of up to 12 years, you can finance the car of your dreams. Call us at 636-600-4600 for additional details. Warranty ALL SALES ARE FINAL WITH CAR BEING SOLD WHERE IS, AS IS! The vehicle is offered with a right to a personal inspection by any bidder or agent of any bidder. The vehicle is available for inspection prior to bidding. If you are the high bidder and unable to inspect said vehicle before auction close, you or an agent will have (7) days to inspect said vehicle after the close of auction. I encourage a physical inspection strongly to avoid any misunderstandings or representations. All used vehicles should be assumed to have some degree of wear. No vehicle is perfect to everyone. Each vehicle has its strengths, styles, tendencies and shortcomings. Therefore, despite our best efforts to verify a vehicle’s mechanical condition, we are not able to warranty a manufacturer’s workmanship or previous owner’s diligence in care. It is for this reason that all vehicles are sold ”WHERE/IS, AS/IS”. We have described the above mentioned vehicle to the best of our ability. However, with all classic and exotic vehicles, the condition is subjective. Please be advised that no oral or written statements concerning any vehicle constitutes a representation or warranty of the condition of the said vehicle. INDUSTRY UNIQUE RETURN POLICY: If for any reason you receive your vehicle and have buyer’s remorse, are not happy with the vehicle or just don’t want it for any reason we will purchase the car back from you. We must be notified in writing of your decision to return the vehicle within seven (7) days of your receipt of said vehicle. The vehicle may not have more than 75 additional miles on the odometer from the time it left our possession and be returned in the same condition that it left. You WILL be responsible for a restocking fee that will equal 20% of the purchase price of the vehicle, no exceptions. You will also be responsible for shipping the vehicle back to our shop at your expense. Copyright © 1999-2015 MotoeXotica. All Rights Reserved. You might recognize my name or my business name from beautiful classic cars and trucks I’ve listed for sale nationally. I’ve got over 15 years of classic car and truck experience. I’d like to put that experience to work for you. Over the years I’ve featured many classic cars and trucks at multiple different auctions across the United States. I consign multiple classic cars and trucks at all four of the Barrett Jackson auto auctions every year. I’m considered one of the top consignors at Barrett Jackson. I’ve had many classic cars and trucks sell in the top 25 highest sale priced vehicles for each event. They’ve also offered some of my cars as the “Marc Schiliro Collection”. I was fortunate to have Speed TV at my new facility for an interview for Barrett Jackson that aired during the Barrett Jackson auto auction in Palm Beach 2012. I’m a regular consignor at the Mecum auctions as well. I also have had many cars that have been featured in multiple magazines and multiple websites. I specialize in beautiful classic cars and trucks that have what I call “The Pop Factor”. I purchase classic cars and trucks that are finished, I redesign other people’s restorations and have also coordinated restorations from start to finish. I’m currently not doing full restorations as it takes too much time and money. I love what I do and I’m extremely passionate about it! Two years ago I opened a beautiful new facility located in Seekonk, MA. MS CLASSIC CARS is open to the public on Saturdays. We offer about 25 classic cars and trucks for sale. We also offer complete automotive detailing. Our facility is very neat and organized. When you call you deal directly with me. I appreciate the opportunity. We except all trades. If you’d like to be added to our VIP EMAIL BLAST that gets sent to thousands of people when we get a new addition please visit my website and sign up. Please also like us on Facebook for updates. The power of networking is amazing! Market I've been collecting classic cars and trucks for over fifteen years now and have seen a lot happen. I've seen the hobby continue to grow not only at the auctions but also with the amount of television shows, magazines and websites that are related to classic cars in some form or another. I strongly believe the classic car market is a great place to invest in. When the economy is strong, the classic car market is extremely strong. When the economy isn't so strong the classic car market holds its own. I've sold classic cars and trucks in both economic conditions. The reason classic cars make such a great investment is because people are crazy about cars, especially the classics! I've learned it's not just the United States; it’s the entire world. Barrett Jackson stated, "Foreigners can sometimes represent 25% of the registered bidders at one of our auctions." At the Barrett Jackson in Scottsdale, AZ 2011 they stated, "There was a registered bidder from every state in the USA.” I've also learned that no matter the gender or age, all different people appreciate this hobby. Another example would be the Barrett Jackson auto auctions; not only do millions of people watch it live on the Speed Channel but hundreds of thousands of people attend these auctions. Every year the attendance of visitors at the event and number of viewers on T.V. increase. Over the years I've noticed that the extremely detailed classic cars have always commanded a higher price. Even people who don't have any classic car experience can recognize and appreciate attention to detail. Currently the overall market is on the raise once again. Certain classic cars are on the rise and others are on the decline. Typically, the classic cars that are on the rise are the cars that a lot of people don't own. In other words, there are classic cars that haven't saturated the market. The cars that are at every car show and auction and page on the Internet for sale are the ones that aren't changing in value or are slowly on the decline. Of course, if the car is spectacular it will command a higher price as I mentioned. It's all about supply and demand, not a good or bad economy. Custom cars have remained strong because each car is different from the next one. They each have their own character. “I’m putting my money where my mouth is” I’m just a 38 year old blue collar guy who was working full time selling new and used Mercedes Benz. I was selling my classic cars and trucks part time. Although I had my used car dealers license I didn’t have a facility that was open to the public. Overall things were going just fine. However, my dream was to open my own classic car and truck dealership. I decided to give up my full time job with health insurance and a 401K to open a new classic and truck dealership. I had to invest a ton of money to make that happen and now have a lot more overhead. Do you think I would’ve done all that if I didn’t think the classic car and truck market wasn’t going to remain strong? I consign anywhere from three to eight cars at each Barrett Jackson auto auction at no reserve because I know there’s always going to be bidders for classic cars and trucks. Description1941 Studebaker President Sedan VERY RARE! VERY RARE! VERY RARE! This is 1 of only 7,801 built in 1941! Invited to the Radnor Hunt Concour D’Elegance in 2010. Only 100 vehicles are selected for this show! Body tag indicates: 7C = 1941, W = 4-door sedan, 3 = built spring of 1941 and 797 = body style! This car was treated to a very extensive no expense spared restoration a few years ago. MS CLASSIC CARS has recently invested roughly $15,000.00 completely re-restoring the engine compartment, trunk compartment and undercarriage. We also gave the exterior and interior some attention to detail! The exterior body is very straight with great gaps. The two tone brown paint color combination is beautiful! Mostly everything on the exterior was restored or replaced and is in great condition. The glass appears to be new and is in excellent condition. All of the exterior lights works accept the rear plate light. Even the emblems and bumper pieces have the painted correct red stripes! The car sits perfectly on orange steel wheels with chrome hub caps and brand new Lester 7.00 x 16 bias ply’s. These tires were $1600.00 alone. The orange wheels also complement the exterior colors so beautifully! The tan interior is very rich and elegant. Everything in the interior has been restored or replaced and is in great condition. Such items include the headliner, dash, steering wheel, door panels, seats, seat belts, carpet and floor mats. All of the windows roll up and down effortlessly. Everything works as it should including the clock. The dash temperature gauge isn’t reading correctly but there is a second temperature gauge under the dash that does work great. My shop did a little cosmetic work to the interior to bring it to the level you see in the photos below! The trunk compartment is very neat and clean. My shop actually completely restored the entire trunk compartment. It has the spare tire and tire jack tools! The engine compartment is highly detailed and home to the 250.4 cubic inch L head eight cylinder engine that produces 117 HP. Everything was rebuilt or replaced during the restoration. My shop completely re-restored the engine compartment cosmetically from top to bottom. They pulled the engine and everything else out so every piece could be stripped and repainted. The engine was also completely tuned including new sparks plugs, fluids, etc. Although it has the original style fuel pump an electric fuel pump was installed for easy starting. This car starts almost immediately and purrs like a kitten. It runs at 180 degrees all the time with no overheating issues. The battery is brand new. Search the internet for any 1941 vehicle and you’ll find not many engine compartments look like this one! The engine is coupled to a 3-speed manual transmission with overdrive. This car cruises at 60 MPH smoothly! The steering system is a symmetrical direct-action linkage with variable-ratio gear. It’s easy to steer and very tight! The undercarriage is also highly detailed. Everything was rebuilt or replaced during the restoration. My shop completely re-restored the entire undercarriage cosmetically from top to bottom. The frame is a double drop steel with partial box section side rails and straight x-member. The front suspension is independent, planar with transverse leaf spring enclosed in grease packed metal cover with shock absorbers. The rear suspension is a solid axle, 8 leaf semielliptic springs enclosed in grease packed metal cover with Houdaille lever shock absorbers. This car drives and handles amazing down the road! This vehicle has had a MS CLASSIC CARS classic car detail valued at $400.00! “As my website indicates I’ve collected and sold a few beautiful Studebaker pickup trucks but never a car. The car you’re about to witness isn’t just any classic car but a very rare classic car! Studebakers are becoming very collectable and prices have been on the rise based on their important automotive history in the US. As stated above Studebaker only made 7,081 Presidents in 1941. There becoming near impossible to find especially in nice condition. This 1941 Studebaker President is better than nice it’s very nice! It was restored a few years with no expense spared. The exterior body is very straight with excellent gaps. The two tone brown paint is in beautiful condition and screams luxury. The orange rims with white wall tires fit it perfectly and make a statement. The suicide doors open to into a beautiful interior that is both classy and comfortable. There’s tons of room for rear passengers which makes them feel like royalty. The engine compartment is highly detailed and home to the 250.4 cubic inch L head eight cylinder engine that produces 117 HP. The engine starts almost immediately and purrs like a kitten. The trunk compartment is also highly detailed and home to the spare tire and jack assembly. The trunk is big enough to hold whatever you desire. The undercarriage is also very detailed many restored or new parts. This Studebaker drives and handles like a dream considering its 73 years old. You can bank on the fact while you’re driving it or showing it you won’t see another. I would challenge anyone to find a comparable vehicle for less. Get it before someone else does!” Marc Schiliro – the owner Inspection Report"Unfortunately most classic vehicles that are being advertised for sale by dealers and private parties aren't exactly what's being advertised for sale. This is an industry with no real guidelines and everyone's opinion is completely different. The average consumer doesn’t realize classic vehicles weren’t restored at the factory and are being restored by people in their garages. Everyone’s level of restoration experience is different and it shows in the restoration. An example would be a classic vehicle that's being advertised as an original model with matching numbers could be a phony with a reproduction trim tag and re stamped numbers on the engine block, etc. Another example would be a classic vehicle is being advertised as a full restoration when indeed only a few things have been restored. There are many classic vehicles listed for sale that have cosmetic and mechanical issues with such items as the lights, body hinges, gauges, window components, steering components, upholstery, engine leaks and tuning, radiators, transmission, rear end, brake components and suspension components. The consumers are spending thousands of dollars repairing the classic vehicles they've purchased after the sale. At MS CLASSIC CARS I own the entire inventory and take pride in what I sell. I'm not a consignment dealer who is only looking to make a quick buck on a vehicle that they don't even own. We’ve seen dealers and private parties purchase classic vehicles at auctions and online and immediately list them for sale. They never even touched the vehicle. Even with 15+ years’ experience and having collected and sold over 250 classic vehicles I’ve experienced that ALL the classic vehicles need some attention. Obviously some need more than others but the bottom line is they all need something. I do the best of our ability to purchase quality classic vehicles, prepare them and advertise them honestly. To be clear were not in the restoration business. I collect and sell classic vehicles that have already been restored and do our best to bring them to another level with service and detail work. Unlike many dealers when you call or email to inquire about a classic vehicle you speak directly to me. I purchases all the classic vehicles for MS CLASSIC CARS, follow the service and detail process, write the descriptions, take the photos, advertise them for sale and answers all the calls and emails. I'll personally go over the entire vehicle and tell you everything I knows about it. I'll also give you my personal opinion about the classic vehicle of your choice and decide if it’s truly the right fit for you. If you've read the introduction tab or visited myr website you’ll probably agree I'm a bit of a perfectionist and represent very detailed classic vehicles. MS CLASSIC CARS has a great reputation and we continue to raise the bar in the classic car and truck world. These are older vehicles and aren’t new but were doing our best to make them function, look great and honestly describe them. I sell our classic cars and trucks very quickly because consumers see the value. Once you've committed to purchase a classic vehicle from MS CLASSIC CARS, I'lll make it a very easy process from start to finish. Once the funds have cleared I'll immediately mail the paperwork USPS 2-day air. A CD with the description and photos of the vehicle you purchased will be included in the package. I'll also assist in enclosed door to door transportation. I look forward to working with you. Thank you for the opportunity! Many pictures are loading, please be patient. Don't hesitate to call or email if you have any questions! 1990 Avanti 4-Door Sedan Only 96,790 Actual Miles! Automatic Transmission 302 V8 Engine! Only 89 Ever Produced! A wonderful opportunity! Here is a very rare chance to get one of the rarest sedans ever produced! Up for auction is a 1990 Avanti 4-Door Sedan! Here's a bit on the Avanti Sedan pulled off Google: While Studebaker president Sherwood Egbert had envisioned a four-door sedan based on the Avanti way back in 1963, this 1990 Avanti four-door sedan currently on offer is not the result of Egbert's dream. Instead, it's the product of John J. Cafaro's brief tenure as the head of Avanti in the late 1980s. The Avanti four-door, based on a Chevrolet Caprice chassis, is the only vehicle Avanti Automotive Corp. built in 1990. This version of the car was unveiled at the Greater New York International Automobile Show in March 1989. How many cars can you truly say are rare? This is one of the rarest cars on the planet to own! The car runs and drives nicely. I wouldn't call it a show winner at this point as it has a few quirks pointed out in the photos below. It would need some light cosmetic and mechanical work to be a legitimate show winner. However, with its pure rarity and unique looks it still commands all the attention at any car show it goes to! The car's previous owner lived here in Texas, Houston to be exact. The car belonged in a collector's private collection until the car was damaged in Hurricane Ike in 2008 when the collector's garage flooded from the rain (fresh water, not salt water!!). We acquired it from the insurance company. The damage was relatively light, but we did give it a mini-restoration and went through the entire car and made sure there were no lasting effects from the water exposure. The car was always kept in a rust free environment as the body has no rust at all on it! Due to the insurance history, the car does come with a rebult-salvage Texas title which is the same as a normal clean Texas title except for the notation on the front of the title "rebuilt salvage", "flood damage". If you haven't noticed by now on classic cars like this it's not so much the title history as it is the condition of the car itself. There are plenty of rusted out cars sitting on blocks in fields that have perfectly clean titles, but what are those going to get you besides a headache? Come see this car and you'll be impressed! This may be your last chance to get a car like this. With only 80-90 ever produced you may never see another one on the market! Don't miss your opportunity to own this beautiful car! This car is truly a beautiful Avanti. You will be the envy of other owners at car shows! You will not be disappointed! Don't settle for second best! Get the car you have always dreamed of owning! Don't let this wonderful opportunity pass you by! If you have any questions don't hesitate to give us a call at 571-969-2054 What a rare car! These four door models are few and far between. Some say 80 some say 90 made but in either number it's still incredibly rare! The passenger corner of the front bumper is chipped as you can see. What a unique car! The entire body is made out of fiberglass. The original paint is 24 years old now and does show some light cracks in some places under close inspection. Here on the driver side as you can see. On the bumper. Just look at this beauty! What a find! This car will capture the curiosity of anyone who is nearby! This car has no fenders. It's all one big piece of fiber glass! The body is still very straight! The 24 year old clear coat is failing in a few small places. You can see it here. Even from the rear the car still looks incredible with these unique looks you won't find anywhere else! This car had another logo back here at some point. You can see the holes that were drilled to attach them. This is the real deal! An Avanti! The body is still incredibly straight! The car has held up real nicely for being all original! Just look at these unique lines! Clear coat beginning to fail behind the rear wheel as shown here. The paint still looks great up here! It's 24 years old and isn't perfect but all in all its still nice! A small spot up here as you can see. The hood looks great! Another spot on the passenger side behind the rear door. The rubber trim on all four windows needs to be replaced. It's 24 years old and has dried and broken off in most cases. Not a hard fix. See what i mean? You can see half the rubber then the other half you can look straight into there. Wheels and tires still look great. Tires have plenty of tread but are starting to show some time related age wear. Above one wheel is some light spider webbing of the fiberglass. Clear coat cracking on and next to the mirror. If it wasn't for the clear coat and a few fiberglass cracks the exterior would be near perfect. Trunk still looks great! The carpeting is a little discolored, but all in all it's still nice! Driver's door and trim still look great! Here's your first glimpse into this original 1990 Avanti 4-Door! All original in here. Driver's seat is showing some wear expected for an original car of this age and mileage. Not too bad for 24 years old. This car hasn't been restored in any way! Power seat controls still work great! Passenger side door also looks great! You'll be pleased with all the luxury this car has to offer! They really made something special with this car! Passenger's seat is in even better condition. The leather looks great! Just look at how nice it is! Original Avanti interior! This power seat is also working great! Rear doors still look great! No scuff or kick marks to be found! Rear seat passengers have plenty of room and even have tray tables! What a luxury sedan! The tray tables retract easily! This door is also looking great! You'll be pleased with this car's all original condition! The rear seats were very seldomly sat in! They really have held up well! This car has got it all! Very unique! Rear seat passengers will really enjoy all the comfort! Only 80 of these cars exist. You won't find a rarer car out there! The driver will enjoy all the looks they get while driving! This car is a sight to behold! So will the passenger! A very comfortable ride being surrounded with leather and woodgrain! The interior still looks good. It's held up nicely for being 24 years old! The a/c and radio still work nicely! Transmission shifts great! The woodgrain still looks good. The window motors are showing their age leading to us refraining from operating them. We'd hate to send the window down only to see it not come back up when commanded. All the motors could use a good lubricating/service. Vanity mirrors. I couldn't get the lights on the mirrors to work though. The car did have an auto dimming mirror but it's permanently dimmed now due to its age. The car has had a radar detector installed in a very discreet place here. The headliner still looks great but has come down slightly on the passenger's side a the seam as you can see. Back here still looking nice! We found some promotional material for this car. It's very hard to come by. This car was really rare! Copy of a window sticker! This car had a sticker price of $48,000 in 1990. This isn't from this car but for illustration purposes. All the gauges are still working! Original mileage! The engine still shows nicely and runs very well! What's nice about this rare car is that the parts that made it are anything but rare. This car is on a Chevrolet Caprice chassis! This car can be serviced at Pep Boys or Goodyear! You don't need a special mechanic! This is the real deal! The 302 v8! Plenty of power for this Avanti! Engine is still in great shape! It fires right up! It appears the heater has been bypassed. This is a car you would be proud to call your own! Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE THE DOWNFALL AND EVENTUAL DEMISE OF THE STUDEBAKER COMPANY IS WELL KNOWN IN CAR ENTHUSIAST CIRCLES. IT IS ONE OF THE SADDEST STORIES IN AUTOMOTIVE HISTORY. ONE OF THE PIONEERING AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE COMPANIES IN THE COUNTRY, STUDEBAKER ESTABLISHED AN ENVIABLE REPUTATION FOR QUALITY AND RELIABILITY. HOWEVER, VICIOUS COMPETITION FROM THE LARGER FORD AND CHEVROLET, CORPORATE MISMANAGEMENT AND POOR DECISIONS, BAD MERGERS, AND LACK OF FUNDS DETERMINED THE FINAL FATE OF THE COMPANY. THE LAST STUDEBAKER ROLLED OFF THE CANADIAN ASSEMBLY LINE ON MARCH 16,1966. THE BAD NEWS FOR STUDEBAKER WAS GOOD NEWS FOR AUTO ENTHUSIASTS AND COLLECTORS WORLDWIDE. DUE TO QUALITY OF BUILD, LOW PRODUCTION NUMBERS, AND POPULAR STYLING, CLASSIC STUDEBAKERS HAVE BECOME SOME OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER COLLECTOR VEHICLES IN THE MARKET. Studebaker entered the automotive business in 1902 with electric vehicles and in 1904 with gasoline vehicles, all sold under the name "Studebaker Automobile Company". Over the next 50 years, the company established an enviable reputation for quality and reliability. However, years of trouble followed. Studebaker's strong post-war management team including president Paul Hoffman and Roy Cole (vice-president, engineering) had gone by 1949 and was replaced by more cautious executives who failed to meet the competitive challenge brought on by Ford and Chevrolet. The conservative executives became obsessed with short term goals instead of long term prosperity. Massive discounting in a price war between Ford and General Motors could not be equalled by the independent carmaker, for whom the only hope was a disastrous merger of Studebaker, Packard, Hudson, and Nash into a third giant combine. By 1954, Studebaker was already in the red ink. They struggled for over a decade before the end came. One of the success stories, and also victims, in this drama was the Studebaker truck line. Noted Studebaker historian Fred Fox stated that the company lost one of its' greatest opportunity when it didn't aggressively enter the commercial truck market after the World Wars. Studebaker had a long standing relationship with businesses and farmers, dating back to the horse wagon days. This was the exact demographic that was demanding the pickup truck. Ignoring this proved fatal. The Studebaker Champ was the light duty truck that was manufactured from 1960-1964. The truck line hadn't undergone a significant redesign in over 10 years. Although they had to use many existing components due to cost constraints, the end result was impressive. The chassis and cargo box were very similar to the existing design. However, designers devised a creative plan to utilize the Lark sedan body as the cab section. The engineering staff took a four-door sedan, cut it in half behind the front doors and modified the front half slightly to fit the truck chassis. The only new sheet metal stamping that was required was the back wall of the new cab. With a cab based on a sedan body, the Champ was among the first pickups to offer true "car-like" comfort, with a wide, comfortable bench seat and a handsomely-styled interior. Other manufacturers took until the late 1960s and early 1970s to follow the Champ's lead. The Champ also was the first to offer state of the art options such as sliding rear window and fiberglass body and bed components. The Champ also pointed the way to a smaller yet still rugged pickup, something Dodge later claimed as a "first" with their mid-sized Dakota, which was introduced as a 1987 model, nearly 27 years after the Champ. By December 1963, Studebaker's board of directors announced the closure of its' South Bend factory, and the trucks were among the casualties of the company's consolidation around an abbreviated family-car lineup in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada assembly plant. When they purchased the rights and tooling to the Studebaker Avanti in 1964, Nate Altman and Leo Newman also acquired the rights and tooling to Studebaker's trucks. However, Altman and Newman, for reasons which are lost to history, never built as much as a single truck. The opportunity to continue to manufacture a vehicle that was ahead of its' time was lost. The result is the existence of a very limited number of quality built, highly demanded Studebaker pickup trucks. Today, the Champs that still exist are highly prized for their interesting combination of passenger-car comfort and style and their rugged mechanical durability The example in this ad is one of them. don't miss this opportunity. There is a simple reason why there are very few of these trucks still on the road today. The majority of these have rusted away and were hauled to the junk yard. Although not still show condition, still can be rated as a nice driver quality example. Refinished many years ago in the original Apache Red. White trim on bumpers, grille, and headlight rims. White body accent stripes. White Studebaker logo on tail gate. Paint is good driver quality. There are some driving blemishes and some areas of minor bubbling, and a few minor repairs, however the paint has a glossy shine and shows well. View the Photo Bucket file to verify paint condition. Body and bed are solid and in overall very good condition for the age of the truck. Dual chrome mirrors. Bed rails. Finished oak bed flooring with deep grain in the wood. White wall radial tires. Featuring a two year restoration that was completed in 2008, this light green sedan is powered by a smooth-running 218 cubic inch L-head inline six! Although the Dictator was Studebaker's lowest priced model in 1936, only trumped by the 8 cylinder President model, it certainly doesn't mean anything was compromised in terms of style and luxury. The Dictator line was available in many body styles and featured an abundance of styling details. The signature vertical grille proudly displays clean and bright chrome and leads the eye to the freestanding headlights nestled on bullet style cradles. The horizontal separators on the side add a nice touch of elegance. A split windshield augments the chrome rear view mirror up front, and like most cars of the era, there is only one taillight that sits next to the big, notchy trunk out back. The green paint is smooth and lays nicely on all of the panels which feature even gaps all around. And when you step back and shift your focus to the large, flared fenders that sandwich the wide running board it's really hard not to appreciate the presence this car brings to the road! Open the suicide doors and you're greeted by a plush, tweed interior. In front of the driver is a very handsome instrument panel that provides all of the necessary information such as fuel level, speed, oil pressure, water temperature and amperage. Within easy reach is the long gear selector that communicates changes to the transmission, and the vintage three spoke steering wheel provides a great diameter for smooth turning. The color matched dash is certainly an interesting piece and even gives the passenger a pleasant sight with a dignified glove box. The door panels are simple, but provide a nice touch with an Art Deco inspired stitched design that surrounds chrome handles and cranks. Rear passengers remain happy with a roomy and plush bench seat, providing them with hours of comfort for those long, sunny day cruises. Overall, the interior is very simple, yet stylish, and comes together very nicely for a package that is fun to look at and comfortable to sit in. The Dictator was available with a 218 cubic inch, L-head inline six cylinder in 1936. But with 90 horsepower, the Dictator was surely no slouch for its time...and this one still aims to please. That smooth-running inline six sends power through a four speed transmission, back to a solid rear end to provide happy cruising. The X-frame chassis is stiff and provides great handling for a car of this era. Stopping comes courtesy of hydraulic brakes, and it all comes to the road via stylistic steel wheels and 6.00 x 16 bias ply whitewall tires. Less than 30,000 Dictators were produced for the 1936 model year, and with the fit and finish this one presents, let alone the few that are left, we don't expect it to last long in our showroom. Featuring a two year restoration that was completed in 2008, this light green sedan is powered by a smooth-running 218 cubic inch L-head inline six!Although the Dictator was Studebaker's lowest priced model in 1936, only trumped by the 8 cylinder President model, it certainly doesn't mean anything was compromised in terms of style and luxury.
