To be unveiled next month at the 2003 IAA, the commemorative model is based on the current rear-wheel drive Porsche 911 Carrera but offers more horsepower, enhanced handling features, and unique interior and exterior styling. The 40th Anniversary 911's 3.6-liter flat-six engine produces 345 horsepower (DIN), 25 horsepower more than the base model 911. As a result, the model is one second faster than the regular 911 from 0 to 120 mph (200 km/h) with a time of 16.5 seconds. The car's top track speed, 180 mph (290 km/h), makes it the second fastest non-turbocharged model in the current 911 line. Aggressive sport suspension settings help to enhance the 40th Anniversary 911's handling. Combined with the standard electronic Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system, an additional mechanical rear-axle differential lock provides even better traction and optimum acceleration potential. The 40th Anniversary 911's distinguishing styling features include GT silver metallic exterior paint color (exclusive to this model and the Carrera GT), front cooling air openings adopted from the 911 Turbo, body color air intake grills, left and right sill trims, an aluminum "911" logo on the engine cover, shot-blasted, polished 18-inch Carrera wheels, and high-gloss polished exhaust tailpipes. This particular 'Vette includes power sport seats, dual-range climate control, a heads-up display, and the F45 adjustable suspension system that really offers the best of both worlds: comfort and performance. And as you'd expect, the interior is virtually unmarked with matching carpets that have never been dirty and leather seating surfaces that don't even look like they've been tried on for size. The bright instruments flash to life with the turn of the key, doing a little sweep of the dials just to show you that everything is working, and the floor mats include matching embroidered Corvette logos. The trunk area is well-shaped and useful, with another matching carpeted floor mat, and unlike earlier Corvettes, there's plenty of room to store your gear under the rear hatch. It's one of 1500 built by Ford to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the T-Bird, and it's got a lot of unique features that make it a strong future collectable. Yeah, there's a lot of gold, but it totally works here. Even if it's not your thing, you can see that Ford's latest Thunderbird can still pull it off. All the Anniversary models were given a special Cashmere "Tri-Coat" paint job that's almost iridescent when you see it in the sun. The sheetmetal is factory Thunderbird and the paint is beautifully preserved, so it's just dazzling in person. With only 19,349 original miles, it still looks fresh and as I said, it definitely attracts attention, particularly with the ladies. In truth, every one of the Anniversary cars was sold before they even hit showrooms, such was the fever for a future collectable, and I'm sure you'll have people asking you what color it is when you're stopped at red lights or picking up some groceries on a warm summer evening. A few chrome accents really stand out against the gold metallic paint, as do the brilliant red taillights, which still look like new. The interior got a light makeover with some matching Stone highlights, done in leather, of course. Most of the upholstery is factory-issue Ford leather, but Anniversary models got black carpets with matching floor mats piped in Stone leather, a leather-wrapped wheel and matching Stone shifter knob, and the whole theme fits together quite well. Nothing was altered beyond the colors, so all of Ford's engineering and technology, not to mention reliability, remains intact, making this a car that you can still comfortably drive every day without a second thought. Everything was standard, from power windows and locks to automatic climate control and a powerful AM/FM/CD stereo system that more than fills the cockpit with sound. White-faced retro instruments and Thunderbird logos with turquoise inlays are more connections to the past, and everything works like it should. You'll also note gold-toned scuff plates and a special plaque in the glove box commemorating the occasion. The trunk is untouched and ultra-clean, while the tan convertible top stows in seconds with just the touch of a button. There's also a matching Cashmere porthole hardtop, which, to my eye, completes the look even better than the canvas one. The same 4.0-liter DOHC V8 that lives in all the Thunderbirds lives in this one, too, and it's reliable and smooth, exactly what you want from a grand-touring machine. Capable of eating up hundreds of miles without complaint, but entertaining to drive around town with a great V8 bark out back, it's the right engine for this car. It is, of course, 100% stock right down to the air filter and exhaust system, which insures reliability and comfort because this car is all about being seen. A 5-speed automatic transmission is unobtrusive and the all-independent suspension soaks up bumps without losing its agility. Anniversary cars were pretty stock under the skin, although they did get those special chrome alloys, which wear 235/50/17 Michelin radials. No, it's not for everyone, but if you want your convertible to be a little out of the ordinary, this is the 'Bird that belongs in your garage. With gorgeous two tone paint, beautiful red cloth interior, t-tops, and its original V8 under the hood, it's a great entry-level 'Vette that will get you into all the big events, win or place, and put a smile on your face every time you crack the throttle. 1978 was the first year of the C3 fastback styling, and combined with the two-tone paint, the results are a homerun. This commemorative coupe is less known than the gray/black pace cars, but the two shades of silver separated by a pinstripe has a monochrome level of cool that still turns heads today. In fact, you're looking at a recent respray of the factory colors, which ensures that both silver hues look fresh in the sunlight. While chrome was at a minimum in these years, there are two nice pieces of brightwork that outshines both sliver paint jobs. The wheels are done in the same look-at-me polish of the pace car, but real enthusiasts flock to see the shiny the 25th anniversary badge on the hood. Red cloth helps with some aggressive attitude inside. All the upholstery seems to be in amazingly original condition, which is especially nice to see because it is often changed on many of today's silver anniversary Corvettes. The rarity might make it desirable, but there's also a functional side, too. After all, if you park your Corvette for an hour in the sunlight with the top open, you'll feel much better sitting in a cloth bucket seat than the leather ones. Regardless, once you start up the car you can control your own climate with the air conditioning. A/C is just one of a long list of desirable factory features that also includes, power windows, power locks, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, and cruise control. There's an aftermarket AM/FM/cassette stereo installed, but you'll also get the original unit to swap back in if desired. This is a car that was meant to be driven, so the leather-wrapped steering wheel feels great in your hands, and the shifter for the 3-speed automatic transmission falls easily to hand just inches away. The original, matching-numbers 350 cubic inch V8 still lives under the hood. It has been dressed up with a dash of extra chrome, and the valve covers have been given a coat of handsome blue paint. Overall, the cleanliness of this engine bay is proof of how much care has been taken over the last three decades with this celebratory Corvette (we've got the original owner's manual and plenty of maintenance receipts to back up this level of care too). In fact, the 25th Anniversary cars were seen as one of the first true collector Corvettes out of the factory, and often these were not maintained just simply because they were locked away without seeing any use. Thankfully, this one shows all the hints of enough driving to keep this coupe healthy without becoming a high-mileage car. We suggest practice at least the same level of maintenance through road use, just like every classic car. Besides, this 'Vette has all the right road trip features with its smooth V8, three-speed automatic transmission, power steering and four-wheel power disc brakes. From the first generation Ram Air IV cars, to the iconic Bandit Trans Ams, to the later model fourth generation cars...when they see a lull in the market, you can count on a sharp, upward climb in value. This low mileage, limited production 1994 Pontiac Trans Am 25th Anniversary is a very clean specimen that should prove to continue on that upward trend. As a nod to the first Trans Ams, Pontiac paid tribute by gracing the body panels of this '94 Trans Am with the same all white body with a bold blue stripe down the center of the car. Walking around this car, you'd be pretty impressed with the near showroom-like finish. It appears that this car obviously spent the mojority of its life pampered in a garage. It has seen less than 12K miles since being purchased new 20 years ago and it definitely shows. The blue striping appears factory fresh and doesn't show any signs of fading, peeling, or cracking. The flip-up headlights function like new and the removable T-tops lift off without any issue and stow away nicely in the rear hatch. Another nice feature of the 25th Anniversary model is the callouts at the bottom of the doors and 16'' alloy wheels finished in matching white. Inside is probably one of the most attractive and notable features of the Anniversary Trans Am, with bright white leather seats that provide and appealing two-tone contrast against the rest of the black interior. The front buckets are very clean and show very little wear with '25th Trans Am' stitched into the back rest. The door panels also received the same stitching treatment and look great continuing the two-tone theme. The rear seats are covered in the same white leather and appear to have never been sat in. All of the interior trim and dash looks great and crack free, while all of the amenities you'd expect from a car of this age and pedigree are present such as air conditioning, an AM/FM/cassette player, anit-theft system, cruise control, tilt wheel, driver and passenger air bags, power locks, power windows, and steering wheel mounted audio controls. Although the 25th Anniversary edition was just an appearance package, that doesn't mean this Trans Am didn't put up some impressive performance numbers for its time. Power comes from the original fuel injected 5.7L LT1 V8 that produces 275 horsepower and is capable of propelling this Trans Am to 60 mph in just over 5 seconds. That power is sent to an automatic transmission which was the popular choice for buyers of these 25th Anniversary cars. With that said, less than 1,700 automatic coupes were produced, so you can be sure you're looking at a special example here. The undercarriage of this car is very clean, you could be fooled into thinking the car has undergone a recent restoration. It's just been properly maintained its whole life! Turns are assisted with power steering, while braking duties are supplemented with power 4-wheel disc brakes. And putting that power to the pavement is 245/50/16 Goodyear Eagles. From the first generation Ram Air IV cars, to the iconic Bandit Trans Ams, to the later model fourth generation cars...when they see a lull in the market, you can count on a sharp, upward climb in value. This low mileage, limited production 1994 Pontiac Trans Am 25th Anniversary is a very clean specimen that should prove to continue on that upward trend. As a nod to the first Trans Ams, Pontiac paid tribute by gracing the body panels of this '94 Trans Am with the same all white body with a bold blue stripe down the center of the car. Walking around this car, you'd be pretty impressed with the near showroom-like finish. It appears that this car obviously spent the mojority of its life pampered in a garage. It has seen less than 12K miles since being purchased new 20 years ago and it definitely shows. The blue striping appears factory fresh and doesn't show any signs of fading, peeling, or cracking. The flip-up headlights function like new and the removable T-tops lift off without any issue and stow away nicely in the rear hatch. Another nice feature of the 25th Anniversary model is the callouts at the bottom of the doors and 16'' alloy wheels finished in matching white. Inside is probably one of the most attractive and notable features of the Anniversary Trans Am, with bright white leather seats that provide and appealing two-tone contrast against the rest of the black interior. The front buckets are very clean and show very little wear with '25th Trans Am' stitched into the back rest. The door panels also received the same stitching treatment and look great continuing the two-tone theme. The rear seats are covered in the same white leather and appear to have never been sat in. All of the interior trim and dash looks great and crack free, while all of the amenities you'd expect from a car of this age and pedigree are present such as air conditioning, an AM/FM/cassette player, anit-theft system, cruise control, tilt wheel, driver and passenger air bags, power locks, power windows, and steering wheel mounted audio controls. Although the 25th Anniversary edition was just an appearance package, that doesn't mean this Trans Am didn't put up some impressive performance numbers for its time. Power comes from the original fuel injected 5.7L LT1 V8 that produces 275 horsepower and is capable of propelling this Trans Am to 60 mph in just over 5 seconds. That power is sent to an automatic transmission which was the popular choice for buyers of these 25th Anniversary cars. With that said, less than 1,700 automatic coupes were produced, so you can be sure you're looking at a special example here. The undercarriage of this car is very clean, you could be fooled into thinking the car has undergone a recent restoration. It's just been properly maintained its whole life! Turns are assisted with power steering, while braking duties are supplemented with power 4-wheel disc brakes. And putting that power to the pavement is 245/50/16 Goodyear Eagles. Who cares how many they built, the point is that you can get a great-looking and distinctive classic Corvette for the price of a used Malibu sedan. The two-tone color scheme has aged well and this one sports a sparkling interior that's pure 1978 cool. A big part of the Corvette experience is hanging out with other Corvette guys, and you'll find that this Anniversary car will be welcomed with open arms wherever you go. The distinctive silver over dark gray paint scheme has aged well and a lot of non-Corvette folks will assume it's a custom job. The truth is, this is how the factory did it, and the overall finish is certainly appropriate for the age and care which a car like this has received over the years. There's a great gloss to the paint with only minor signs of use, and the crisp bodywork, even gaps, and overall look suggest a car that has been a cherished toy all its life and never a daily driver. All the special markings are still there, from the insignias on the front fenders to the L82 badges on the hood, it's definitely got a special look. The car has a very correct look overall save for the quartet of exhaust pipes sticking out in back, but we'll get to those in a moment. The sparkling interior was called Parchment by some and Oyster by the guys at Chevrolet when this car came out, but either way it's a perfect match for 1978. The beautiful seats just have to be wearing replacement seat covers, because upholstery that's 36 years old never looks that good. However, the carpets may very well be nice originals and the door panels are certainly up to snuff. You'll note that this car is loaded with options, including A/C, power windows and locks, cruise control, and a tilt steering column, all befitting Chevy's flagship. The gauges are original and show quite well, along with a newer Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo head unit neatly installed in the center stack. Color-matched floor mats help keep those light-colored carpets looking their best, and with the T-tops off on a sunny day, you'll appreciate this interior a lot more than something darker. The engine is a well-maintained and mildly modified 350, with plenty of bite behind the bark. With an open-element air cleaner, a Moroso ignition system, a mild camshaft, long-tube headers, and an aluminum intake manifold with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor on top, it's got more than a few more horsepower today. Finned valve covers add a retro-looking bit of performance hardware, and new chrome pieces like the alternator and master cylinder brighten up the formerly all-black engine bay. A TH350 3-speed automatic was by far the most popular transmission choice in 1978 and it's flanked by a set of low-restriction mufflers that dump into those shiny chrome pipes I mentioned earlier. This 'Vette certainly sounds nasty! The chassis is impressively clean overall, perfect for a car that's going to get driven, and the factory slotted aluminum wheels have the right look inside fat 255/60/15 Uniroyal white-letter radials. The other Corvette guys are going to be mighty surprised when they see how well this Anniversary 'Vette moves, and the slick bodywork and gorgeous interior are merely camouflage for a very fun car. It was not well known at the time, but in 1989, Pontiac produced the quickest[9] and fastest[10] American production car. The "Excitement Division" was also asked to provide a car to pace the 73rd running of the Indianapolis 500; sadly, it would be the final time a Pontiac would ever receive that honor. The Trans Am model was now 20 years old, and it was time for another anniversary edition, with this special 20th Anniversary Trans Am to be based on the existing Trans Am GTA. Through a unique partnership between Pontiac and an engineering firm called Prototype Automotive Services (PAS), the Trans Am GTA was equipped with a more powerful version of the turbocharged Buick 3.8L V6, originally developed for the Buick Regal Grand National, and the Turbo Trans Am (TTA) became the vehicle Pontiac supplied to pace the Indianapolis 500. Ultimately, 1,555 TTA replicas, rated at 250 hp, were produced for sale, five of those being test cars. But after Car and Driver magazine tested the car, logging a 0–60 mph run in 4.6 seconds, and a standing quarter-mile in 13.4 seconds at 101 mph, they called the 250 hp rating "exceedingly modest," estimating the actual output to be "closer to 300 hp." They also subsequently reported that it was the "quickest 0–60 sprinter available in any US production-car showroom – at any price."[9] The Car and Driver evaluation produced the best acceleration performance of any main stream publication to test a regular TTA press car from the Pontiac fleet, partly because Car and Driver realized that the turbo boost must be "preloaded" to get maximum performance figures. But short-distance sprinting was not all this car could do well. Early in 1989, Motor Trend ran their top speed test article "Flat-out Fastest American Cars II-the Sequel." During this test, the TTA did 162 mph, and was the fastest production car evaluated in the test. However, Motor Trend declared the winner to be a 1989Corvette ZR-1, which went much faster, but was not a production car (it was a prototype that Chevrolet intended to release for production in 1989, but did not come out until 1990).[11] So by a slight technicality, the TTA could be called the flat-out quickest (0–60 4.6 sec.) and fastest (162 mph) American production car in 1989. It is interesting to note that the only constraint on the top speed of 162 mph was that the TTA was being limited by the engine redline and automatic transmission (with which all TTA's were equipped). When PAS installed a ZF 6-speed manual transmission into one of the cars, they were able to reach 181 mph.[12] Perhaps more importantly than the performance tests provided by the industry magazines was the fact that these cars were capable of much faster acceleration times – with minimal modifications. In fact, with $300 in new parts installed, 12.5-second quarter-mile runs were achievable – without manually shifting gears or the need to trailer the vehicle to the track! Because of this, the TTA has gained a cult following among amateur racing enthusiasts. Pontiac sub-contracted the job of engineering the TTA engine modifications to PAS. The narrow engine bay of the Trans Am required the use of different cylinder heads, which happened to have better flow characteristics than the old Buick heads. Special stainless steel headers were made specifically for the project as well. The heads, headers, along with more refined tuning of the boost and fuel curves, all added up to a more powerful package than the older Buicks. PAS was also in charge of testing and assembling the engines. Most TTA's came with T-tops and leather interior, but there were also hardtops and cloth-interior cars. And every TTA had an automatic transmission – the TH200-4R, equipped with overdrive and a torque converter clutch. The three actual pace cars were randomly selected from the production run, and sent to Indianapolis to pace the race. Thus, the pace car replicas were closer to the actual pace cars than any replica previously offered; the only difference between the replicas and the three actual pace cars was the addition of strobe lights and safety equipment to the latter. In addition, the TTA was relatively economical to drive; it returned 24 mpg on the highway, while the only cars (besides the Lotus Esprit Turbo SE) that could approach its performance at the time (Ferraris, Lamborghinis, etc.) were far more costly, and providing only around 10 to 12 mpg. As has been proven to be the case in subsequent years, relying on a small engine for cruising, and a turbocharger for power, provides an exciting driving experience while returning impressive fuel mileage. The rarest 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Ams are the hardtops and convertibles. Only 40 hardtops were made. Only three convertible TTA's were built by ASC,[13][14] one of which was bought by the president of PAS, with the other two falling into private hands. Only two are generally known to exist, however, as the ASC order log shows records for only two TTA convertibles.[15] The five test TTA's, because they were for pre-production use, were pulled off of the assembly line without regard to color, and therefore were not necessarily white. At least two of these test cars were sold to private individuals, so there are at least two extremely rare, non-white, factory TTA's in existence; in fact, one is known to be red. Who cares how many they built, the point is that you can get a great-looking and distinctive classic Corvette for the price of a used Malibu sedan. The two-tone color scheme has aged well and this one sports a sparkling interior that's pure 1978 cool. A big part of the Corvette experience is hanging out with other Corvette guys, and you'll find that this Anniversary car will be welcomed with open arms wherever you go. The distinctive silver over dark gray paint scheme has aged well and a lot of non-Corvette folks will assume it's a custom job. The truth is, this is how the factory did it, and the overall finish is certainly appropriate for the age and care which a car like this has received over the years. There's a great gloss to the paint with only minor signs of use, and the crisp bodywork, even gaps, and overall look suggest a car that has been a cherished toy all its life and never a daily driver. All the special markings are still there, from the insignias on the front fenders to the L82 badges on the hood, it's definitely got a special look. The car has a very correct look overall save for the quartet of exhaust pipes sticking out in back, but we'll get to those in a moment. The sparkling interior was called Parchment by some and Oyster by the guys at Chevrolet when this car came out, but either way it's a perfect match for 1978. The beautiful seats just have to be wearing replacement seat covers, because upholstery that's 36 years old never looks that good. However, the carpets may very well be nice originals and the door panels are certainly up to snuff. You'll note that this car is loaded with options, including A/C, power windows and locks, cruise control, and a tilt steering column, all befitting Chevy's flagship. The gauges are original and show quite well, along with a newer Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo head unit neatly installed in the center stack. Color-matched floor mats help keep those light-colored carpets looking their best, and with the T-tops off on a sunny day, you'll appreciate this interior a lot more than something darker. The engine is a well-maintained and mildly modified L82, which was the top performer in 1978. With an open-element air cleaner, a Moroso ignition system, a mild camshaft, long-tube headers, and an aluminum intake manifold with a Holley 4-barrel carburetor on top, it's got more than a few more horsepower today. Finned valve covers add a retro-looking bit of performance hardware, and new chrome pieces like the alternator and master cylinder brighten up the formerly all-black engine bay. A TH350 3-speed automatic was by far the most popular transmission choice in 1978 and it's flanked by a set of low-restriction mufflers that dump into those shiny chrome pipes I mentioned earlier. This 'Vette certainly sounds nasty! The chassis is impressively clean overall, perfect for a car that's going to get driven, and the factory slotted aluminum wheels have the right look inside fat 255/60/15 Uniroyal white-letter radials. The other Corvette guys are going to be mighty surprised when they see how well this Anniversary 'Vette moves, and the slick bodywork and gorgeous interior are merely camouflage for a very fun car.
