The idea was as simple then as it is today: appeal to a younger clientele to ensure the continued survival of the company. Well, whoever checked the options sheet for this awesome 1970 survivor certainly wasn't typical 'doctor's car' clientele. Its original, 455 cubic inch Stage 1 V8 was a go-to heavyweight for both stoplight brawlers and drag strip warriors. Its original Muncie 4-speed is as spirited as it is reliable. And its rare H1 trailer towing option means that someone was certainly thinking outside the box. Maybe that sort of enthusiasm is also why the car has been immaculately maintained for 45 years and, subsequently, was certified Gold by the Buick GS Club of America. If you're in the market for a top-notch example of one of the coolest Buicks ever produced, this national award winner is just the car you've been looking for! BODYWORK/TRIM Known throughout the Buick world as the 'trailer hitch GS455', this super clean Stage 1 features a solid body that conveys a sense of integrity perfectly befitting its parent division. Consistently providing its various owners with a great combination of rock-solid reliability and full-throttle comfort, that body has never been separated from its chassis. Fittingly, a smooth coat of original Diplomat Blue paint reflects an original vinyl roof. And presently, this Buick's desirability as something that's as rare as it is unique is both genuine and fitting. By 1970, Buick had pretty much perfected its top dog performance offerings both mechanically and aesthetically. At the front of the car, a clean, silver-trimmed grille hangs a bold GS emblem between a broad bumper, chrome-trimmed headlights and clear parking lamps. At the top of that grille, a scooped hood leads the eye to factory-tint glass, which is sealed behind tri-shield mirrors, traditional door handles and polished stainless trim. At the base of that glass, correct door guards and correct door edging perfectly complement straight wheel frames, red-trimmed rocker plates and classy GS Stage 1 ornamentation. And at the back of the car, a second broad bumper centers a classy "BUICK" script between clear tail lamps, correct deck trim and a fourth "GS" emblem. ENGINE While the exterior of this slick A-Body does an excellent job of upholding GM Design's world-class visual aesthetics, the engine compartment is where purists REALLY start to take notice. And for good reason too, because the 455 cubic inch Stage 1 V8 that's bolted between the car's rust-free fenders is the kind of killer powerhouse that makes people either put up or shut up. Turn the key and a big Quadrajet carburetor mixes air from a black, dual-snorkel cleaner with fuel that's supplied by carefully bent stainless, and shoves it into a correct, cast iron intake. That intake feeds cast iron heads, which ride between a familiar points distributor and high quality Taylor plug wires. Spent gases are jetted through correct, cast iron manifolds, which ride under traditional chrome valve covers. And a correct, heavy-duty radiator, which circulates water around an old school Frigidaire AC compressor via pliable GM hoses and reproduction tower clamps, provides ample cooling. The red-dipped block looks surprisingly clean, dressed in an array of vintage decals and framed in requisite GM Satin Black. Correct ancillaries, like a rebuilt Delco Moraine brake booster, a Saginaw steering box and a reproduction Delco battery, prove someone has put a lot of thought into keeping this all-GM Buick all GM. And naturally, the monster mill centers a correct 1231738 casting number behind a correct "SS" assembly stamp and matching partial VIN. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Under this Buick, it's just as the factory planned, with solid, undercoated floors living a functional, unglamorous existence. An original Muncie 4-speed hangs a matching partial VIN between a correct 3925661 casting number and Muncie (P) M21 (B) assembled on March 18th (18), 1970 (0) build stamp. That stalwart gearbox jerks a correct 10-bolt axle, which is finished with a correct posi-traction differential and correct, 3.42 gears. Holding that killer drivetrain off the ground is a familiar Rallye Ride Control Suspension, which pairs factory power steering with better springs, better shocks, a thicker front sway bar, a standard rear sway bar and boxed rear control arms. The car's optional power front disc and rear drum brakes are present and accounted for. On the outside of those brakes, chrome Buick Rallyes twist G60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs around red, white and blue center caps. And the aforementioned manifolds dump spent gases in to aluminized pipes, which make excellent use of throaty turbo mufflers. INTERIOR Pop the sculpted doors and you'll find a correct code 188 Black interior that's still factory-fresh in virtually every way. Comfy seats and fade-free door panels continue the rich feeling of the car's royal Diplomat Blue exterior. In front of those seats, an original dash frames a correct AM/FM radio, controls for the aforementioned air conditioning and clear telemetry that includes a correct tachometer. At the base of that dash, correct consolettes highlight classy Buick ornamentation and a familiar Hurst shifter. At the base of that console, heavy duty, shield-branded floor mats protect color-keyed carpet. Opposite that carpet, a tight headliner frames a correctly lit mirror. The driver keeps tabs on the road through a retro Buick steering wheel. And the passengers stash their luggage beside a full-size spare tire in the car's clean trunk. It absolutely nails the often attempted, but rarely achieved formula of OEM quality good looks and panel fit in a highly detailed, completely custom package. The straight and smooth body is covered in a thick coat of vivid GM Torch Red and topped by an amazing custom pearl flame job courtesy of Wade Hughes from Ohio Flames. It's an unbeatable combination on a car that is so well done you'll find yourself walking back to it again and again just to stare and smile. With think resin throughout and no waves or imperfections, the cars steel reinforced fiberglass body takes the classic design of a '32 Ford roadster and adds numerous details which take it to a whole new level. At the front of the car, a pristine D.F. Metalworks stainless steel grille presents flatter and wider than a traditional '32 Ford grille and sits between two chrome trimmed headlights with body matched housings and integrated turn signals. Behind the grille, the traditional looking '32 Ford hood has been extended to better accommodate massive powerplants and gives the car that cool 'long and low' look that emphasizes power. Behind the hood, a modern wrap around windshield trades in the distracting hard edged look of traditional chopped and stainless framed windshields for a smooth custom look that emphasizes the cars clean design. Below that windshield, shaved suicide doors carry modern body matched sport mirrors and fit perfectly, opening with ease and closing with a confident 'thunk'. Below the doors, custom fiberglass fenders flow from the car's front frame horns to the bottom of the rear valence giving the traditional roadster body some nice modern curves. Out back, a custom tan top that was fabricated by Tietge's Hot Rod Shop sits above a thin LED tail light that spans the entire width of the cars smooth rear valence. Below the trunk, a completely retractable license plate hangs just above the ground in front of a finned rear end cover and chrome inboard mounted brakes. Pry open the long hood and you'll find a fully chromed GM Performance Parts Ram Jet 502 that takes up the car's entire Torch Red engine bay. Straight from GM, this killer package includes high efficiency aluminum heads, an aluminum intake, forged aluminum pistons, forged steel connecting rods, a forged steel crank, a hydraulic roller cam, a fully calibrated ECM, electronic fuel injection and a stout 9.6 to 1 compression ratio that creates 510 horsepower and 565 lb./ft. of unmatched throttle response. Lighting fires for that massive engine is a new American Autowire harness that sends power through a GM coil and distributor to red high performance Taylor plug wires. At the front of the motor a reusable air filter hangs above a Vintage Air Front Runner serpentine system that clears the cars radiator mounted electric fan by about an inch, perfectly displaying the laser precision executed throughout this build. Aesthetically, the car has been completely finished for show with all of its ancillary components like the chrome alternator, chrome AC compressor, polished valve covers, coated long-tube headers and braided hoses still looking brilliant and the simple and uncluttered engine bay appearing more like industrial sculpture than a functioning automobile. The cars custom-built frame was supplied by Boyd Coddington and consists of a heavily tapered chassis that is reinforced by tubular cross members. A polished Heidt's style front suspension features stainless steel upper and lower control arms, chrome QA1 coil-over shocks, a Flaming River manual steering rack and Wilwood performance brakes with drilled rotors and chrome calipers. The cars polished Corvette inspired independent rear suspension features inboard Wilwood disc brakes with polished calipers, two more polished QA1 coil overs and a cool finned differential cover. Exhaust is handled by a custom fabricated and completely polished oval exhaust system that includes stainless Hushpower mufflers, and a 6-speed manual transmission that was transplanted from an LT4 Corvette provides motivation via a body matched driveshaft and pavement shredding 3.73 gears. Everything under this car has been painted in brilliant Torch Red and, as with the engine bay, all componentry has been upfitted to show standards with polished brake and fuel lines, new braided hoses and a custom fuel tank rounding out the details. At the corners of the car, 16 inch front and 18 inch rear Boyd Coddington wheels wear 205/50 and 255/45 Z-rated Goodyear radials. You can credit Steve Holcomb at Pro Auto Custom Interiors for this roadster's stunning, show-stopping interior. Covered in high quality cream leather, the bucket seats were custom fabricated just for this car and the overall design is simple and effective. At the floor, a custom cream console flows from the dash to the middle of the seats and houses a GM 6-speed shifter, controls for the cars Vintage Air HVAC system and buttons for the power windows. At the sides of the seats, custom cream door panels flow around great looking billet door handles, and at the bottom of the seats high-end tan wool carpeting sits below chrome pedals and thick tan mats. In front of the driver, a painted tilt steering column is topped by a custom Boyd Coddington steering wheel, and the painted dash is equipped with a Billet Specialties aluminum panel that holds reliable Classic Instruments gauges. Behind the cockpit you'll find a fully finished trunk that perfectly matches the cream interior and hides a Secret Audio AM/FM radio. That means all those catchy sayings you've heard about North Carolina country boys being brave, polite and simple are absolutely true. See, gearheads in the Tar Heel state know all it takes to have a good time is something with an engine, something with bullets or somewhere with a little bit of land. And that basic outlook on life is probably why we've built such a great reputation as fun-loving, free-spirited adventurers. The all-original time capsule 'Cuda you see here was custom-ordered by one of North Carolina's most fearless backwoods daredevils, and spent most of its life sitting in his world-class car and motorcycle collection. Not only is the car packed full of rare and unique options, it's also equipped with a top-of-the-line, high performance drivetrain, still covered in original paint and still cradling a 2,010 mile original Hemi V8. We all know time travel, however desirable it may be, as a phenomenon that's only found in fiction. But when you take one look at this untouched Plymouth survivor, the ultimate, lowest mileage reference-grade Hemicuda in existence, you'll begin to question both your sense of time and perception! There's a reason, per auctions results, the 1971 Hemicuda is the most valuable muscle car of all time: they were unique and exclusive cars even when new. And, as with any hand-picked hobby car, you really can't get a feel for this Plymouth's significance until you thoroughly understand its owner. Zachary Taylor Reynolds, born in 1938, lived a life most people only dream about. He was the grandson of the world's biggest tobacco tycoon, the son of a prominent political figure and the heir to seemingly unlimited money, fame and intelligence. By the early 1900s the Reynolds family's penchant for reckless behavior was already a subject of national conversation. But in the midst of the roaring 20s Zach's dad Dick Reynolds, and the uncle Zach was named for, sealed the deal by becoming well-known members of New York's Gotham club scene and transporting Mafia bootleggers on their personal planes. Eventually that risky lifestyle gave way to Zach's uncle dying under mysterious circumstances, and Dick moving back to Winston-Salem to become a pillar of the community and the Mayor of the city. But Dick was a natural wonderer, and although he wanted to settle down and raise his young family, he just couldn't resist a chance to sign up for the Navy and rediscover adventure. Unfortunately his combat service in World War II did not quell his appetite for new acquaintances, and it wasn't long until his wife Elizabeth learned of her pending divorce via a popular radio news show. Now charged with raising four kids by herself, Zach's mother decided he and his younger brother would eschew the prominent private educations of her two eldest sons in favor of public schools and summers on the family's 12,000 acre estate. A few years later, with only one parent in the house and 22 miles of fenced in property at his fingertips, nine year old Zach had already become an avid gun enthusiast; a skill that would later net him a national marksmanship title. And by the time he attended R.J. Reynolds high school, Zach had already established his first motorcycle club and become a race winning rider. Unfortunately the unscathed survival of a few serious wrecks slowly convinced young Zach of his perceived indestructibility, and he began spending most of his nights terrorizing the streets of the town his family essentially founded. The police were none-to-happy about Zach's penchant for blatant street racing and daredevil trickery and, at his mother's urging, made him spend many nights in jail and eventually revoked his license. Not to be outsmarted, and knowing North Carolina doesn't require a license to operate a tractor, Zach simply re-geared one of his family's rigs and happily chugged up and down Winston-Salem's quaint country roads at speeds approaching 60 MPH. Fortunately all those growing pains weren't in vain as Zach ultimately wanted to become an engineering undergrad student. However, his mom insisted he attend Wake Forest University, a nearby college that was devoid of engineering programs, and Zach eventually swapped educational ambition for enlistment in the Navy. After four years honing his mechanical prowess in a Virginia ship yard Zach came home to find that his absentee father, who was displeased with his daredevil lifestyle, had disowned him AND his three brothers. But Zach, already substantially wealthy thanks to several independent family trusts, had no intentions of changing for anyone and began building one of the world's largest private motorcycle and muscle car collections. The Hemicuda you're currently looking at was special ordered from Ed Owens Plymouth in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to be a centerpiece of his amazing collection. Serviced and inspected by Zach's friend Lonnie Maines, it's not only one of the highest optioned 'Cudas ever built, it's also a fully documented, reference-grade survivor that still has many traces of its original owner ingrained in its octane-rich DNA. Zach knew actions speak louder than words, and he also knew there wasn't one single person on this planet he had to impress. That laissez-faire outlook and subsequent freedom from societal norms allowed him to pull off a certain flamboyance and creativity that ONLY someone of his presence and stature can. I mean, do you know anyone else who can don a red jumpsuit, wrap up in a black cape, ham-fist a skull swagger stick and be taken remotely seriously; let alone look straight badass while doing it? No. That's because Zach possessed a perfect balance of danger, charisma and youthful charm that was as intriguing as it was welcoming; and all that character and personality certainly flowed into his cars and bikes. Being the heir to the Reynolds tobacco empire, and having an avid love of Winston cigarettes, Zach predictably ordered his brand spankin' new 'Cuda in Chrysler's FE5 Rallye Red, a V1X black vinyl top and V6X Hemi billboards. When the car arrived at Ed Owens' dealership a few touch ups were performed on its hood and fenders, 70s assembly line quality being what it was, and the black billboards were automatically accented with white Hemi letters and white outlining stripes that continued onto the car's profile. As any decent daredevil knows, you can't be good at cheating death unless you taunt death; so in addition to having his name painted right above both of the car's door handles Zach commenced decorating its fenders, hood and trunk with his typical array of skull decals, ace of spades decals and American flag decals. For the first 30 years of its life, this is exactly how the car would remain. It was only after a high caliber Mopar collector Steven Juliano bought it from a North Carolina museum that it was returned to 100% factory luster. Steven determined the only way to safely separate the vintage decals from the vintage paint was to carefully scrape them with his finger nails. The painted "ZACH" letters on the doors were whittled to a mere outline using a mild buffing compound. And the entire car was treated to a through polish and shine. Today, 16 years after that cosmetic freshening, this 'Cuda sits as one fantastically straight head turner which possesses new car solidity and looks as if it could have rolled out of Dodge Main yesterday. And lest you think Zach's spirit isn't still with the car, one careful look at its doors reveals the faint outline of his official brandings! Of course, even without Zach's unique aesthetic tweaks, this sinister stoplight brawler is still very easy on the eyes and STILL some of the meanest looking muscle to ever grace American roads. At the front of the car, an optional Rallye Red multiport grille hangs four 1971-exclusive halogen headlights above a showroom fresh chrome bumper, original chrome road lamps, flush-fitting parking lights and optional wing spoilers. At the top of the car, a fresh air hood props stainless hood pins, a small chrome "PLYMOUTH" script and a "hemicuda" branded shaker in front of original tinted glass that's cleared by turtleback wipers and framed by original stainless trim. At the sides of the car, original Hemi Fender's hang small turn signal indicators and 1971-exclusive fender gills in front of optional body-matched racing mirrors, satin-finished door handles, optional door edge guards and dent-free rocker mouldings. And at the back of the car, a traditional flat black valence centers a cool silver "'cuda by PLYMOUTH" emblem and 1971-exclusive tail lights between original rear window louvers, an optional decklid wing, a second showroom fresh chrome bumper and correct stainless exhaust tips. Despite his loved ones' constant attempts to dampen his desire for fast cars with storms of personal threats, Zach always drove the most impressive metal in town. There was the infamous Catalina 421 Super Duty he purchased for "family transportation". There was the 140 MPH NASCAR-built Cobra he bought to outrun a few specific loudmouths. There was his custom-built, rocket powered Ford Galaxie that made a 200 MPH pass down Interstate 40 and became unofficially known as The Tobacco King. Hell he even had five planes, including one custom-built Pitts, which earned him both a national aerobatics title and the nickname Cigarette City Flash! The point is: Zach ALWAYS had a need for speed and an appetite for the very best. And given how well he and his friends maintained his lust-worthy collection, the engine bay of this top-dog 'Cuda is exactly how you'd expect it to be. There's an all-original, low-mileage Hemi which wears a correct 2468330-2 casting number above a matching 295999 partial VIN. There's a gracious amount of original Hemi Orange overspray that creeps onto the engine's closest ancillary components. And there's original Rallye Red paint covering a firewall and inner fenders that look so fresh they've likely never seen a mechanic's cover. Fuel and air are supplied by two 4-barrel Carter AFB carburetors which are bolted to a high performance intake manifold. Compression is sparked by high quality Chrysler Electronic Suppression wires which are snapped onto an original dual point distributor. Spent gases are expelled through original low restriction exhaust manifolds which seal tight below an obviously vintage set of Organisol coated valve covers. And resultant combustion is cooled by a 26 inch heavy duty radiator that comes complete with original hoses, original squeeze clamps and an original fan shroud. Visually, this reference grade engine compartment is clean and understated... Well, as understated as an all-original, matching numbers HEMI can be. The engine cranks immediately and runs just as well today as when it rolled into Ed Owens showroom. And there are tons of little details like specific fuel lines, original carburetor hardware, original brake booster hardware, original coil wiring, mild weave hoses and original factory-fill fluids that can't even be duplicated by today's nicest NOS and concours cars. Ace stunt pilot or not, I don't think Zach ever got the wheels of this solid Plymouth off the ground. But if you decide to do just that, hopefully via a conventional lift instead of an actual flight plan, you'll find a clean original undercarriage that appears so untouched it could have been teleported straight from 1971. The high powered big block spins an original A727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission that's branded with a correct 3515849 Barracuda code and a matching 295999 partial VIN. And that heavy duty gear slinger churns torque through an optional Dana 60 rear end that's still equipped with a tough Sure Grip differential, killer 4.10 gears and an original factory paper strap that's branded with a build sheet matching 026 part number. At the front of the car an original torsion bar suspension, which is complete with a thick sway bar, specially tuned shocks and original control arms that still display a thin layer of factory Cosmoline, helps increase both drivability and track times. At the back of the car, the aforementioned Dana pumpkin utilizes original leaf springs and a second pair of specially tuned shocks to ensure tight turns and drama free launches. Stops come courtesy of an optional power brake system that employs optional front discs and traditional rear drums. Turns feels firm and responsive thanks to a factory optioned power steering. Spent gases are whisked away by an original true dual exhaust system which features an H-pipe crossover, rear-mounted resonators and Chrysler branded turbo mufflers. And all this first rate hardware proudly stands on original 15 inch Rallye wheels which wrap original F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs around pristine center caps and spotless trim rings. Aesthetically, the bottom of this Super Track Pack 'Cuda is just as reference-grade as its engine bay. And all its original details, including optional undercoated floors, hasty paint drips, standard chalk marks, steel chassis hardware and an old school stainless gas tank are precisely where the factory left them. Ever hear the old southern saying "I told you this story to tell you another story"? Well, I'm going to tell you a short story to tell you an even shorter story. While recovering from a motorcycle accident that landed him in the hospital, Zach ordered a small Ham radio to stave off boredom. That little bit of exposure to the hobby excited him so much he built an entire two-room system in his house that could broadcast worldwide. Among other people, Zack often talked to the Shah of Iran and Arizona native Barry Goldwater; and his signal became so powerful the FCC would regularly visit his house to complain about his interference with local radio stations. Now, I told you that story to highlight a very rare option in Zach's 'Cuda. Because he was such an audiophile, he was one of the few guys to actually check the order form for a premium factory stereo that came complete with a microphone jack and a recorder. Of course, when it comes to most Hemicudas, there are two things to consider: 1) They were bought mainly for performance, and 2) The addition of Chrysler's almost $900 Hemi usually didn't leave much room for frivolous extra-cost luxuries. But I guess one of the many perks of being a millionaire heir to the world's largest tobacco company is checking the box for pretty much anything you want, anytime. Inside the car a rare split bench front, full bench rear seat combination displays virtually no signs of wear at all. Opposite those seats, a fresh black dash hangs and a fully-functional Rallye instrument cluster above a standard Music Master AM/FM radio, an optional locking glove box and a lit ashtray that still conceals butts from Zach's beloved Winston cigarettes. On the doors, sculpted panels proudly hang bold "'Cuda" emblems above optional power window switches, integrated door handles and chrome lock latches. The driver interfaces with the road through an optional three-spoke Rim Blow steering wheel and a chrome column shifter. And the passengers stow their cargo in a virtually untouched trunk that props an original mat and an original Space Saver spare tire below optional rear window speakers, an optional rear window defroster, and factory wing springs. Just in case this world class Tar Heel survivor's amazing story isn't enough to impress you, it also comes with extensive documentation and the provenance of being part of high profile Mopar collector Steven Juliano's ultimate collection. According to the car's Mopar Action spread Steven, who exclusively buys Mopars "the hardest of the hardcore collectors can only dream about", wanted to find the ultimate Hemicuda and subsequently put the word out in his inner circle of Mopar aficionados. An associate of well-known restorer Roger Gibson mentioned Zach's 2,000 mile survivor and, after a few leads, Steven finally got a number and made the call. The owner promptly told Steven the car wasn't for sale but did eventually agree to let him look at it. So Steven grabbed fellow Mopar aficionado Tony D'Agostino, landed in the piedmont of North Carolina and, after two hours of crawling all over this 'Cuda, realized he had actually found the kind of survivor that's usually reserved for car guy fantasies. Upon asking Tony his thoughts, he received the response "If you don't buy this car right now, I will. And I'll never need to own another Mopar as long as I live." And that's all Steven needed to hear to blurt the word "DEAL!" before the owner even finished naming his price. Throughout his life "Dr. Zach" was in the company of celebrities, rock stars and what most considered the upper crust of society. But no matter who visited him, or who he traveled to see, he always called Winston-Salem his home and Winston-Salem residents his closest friends. Unfortunately time waits for no one and Zach, now pushing his 40s, had suffered a series of accidents and was beginning to have premonitions of dying in a plane crash. At the behest of his wife, he decided to quit flying altogether and settled into being a mentor and friend for community kids who had long admired his daredevil spirit. One of those kids, a local 18 year old, had just gotten his pilot's license and was eager to take Zach up to show him a few moves. Given his premonitions Zach was secretly reluctant, but his kind nature would never allow him say no to a kid. On that fateful evening in 1979, the tenth anniversary of Zach's national aerobatics championship, he would take off from his namesake uncle's regional airport and perish in a terrible plane crash. The greatest thing about building a pro-touring C2 is: the aggressive look most enthusiasts strive for is pretty much standard factory fare. At the front of this fully-sorted coupe, a stainless, body-width grille is caged behind chrome-trimmed parking lamps and a traditional 'razor blade' bumper. Above that grille, a '66-exclusive, big block hood features bright stainless heat extractors. Behind that hood, mirrored wipers, fresh stainless trim and a chrome bowtie mirror shape smoked greenhouse glass. Below that glass, C6 Z06-style side scoops ride between chrome door handles, Z06 fender scripts and 3-inch Sweet Thunder side pipes. And behind those pipes, a modified decklid hangs a classy fuel filler and small power antenna above traditional tail lamps and two more 'razor blade' bumpers. Like its Atomic Orange paint, this Corvette's engine highlights classic Chevy design with a virtual lifetime of technological improvement. Twisting 505 SAE-certified horsepower into a massive 470 lb./ft. of tire-shredding torque, the lightweight LS7 rumbling beneath the car's hood is a 21st century testament to the bowtie division's enduring small block V8. Founded in GM's very successful Corvette racing program, the brutal mill utilizes a forged crank, titanium rods and hypereutectic pistons to flat out whip pretty much anything with four wheels. A perfect amount of oxygen flows from reusable K&N filter elements through a chrome, twin-flow air tube to a familiar GM throttle body. That wind mixes with fuel in a professionally-painted intake and progresses to CNC-ported cylinder heads that are built with lightweight titanium valves. Immediately following combustion, spent gases roar through the aforementioned side pipes via modified and Ceramakrome-coated exhaust manifolds. Charge comes courtesy of a chrome alternator that, like the car's chrome AC compressor, spins on a high quality March accessory drive. Drive-by-wire communication is facilitated by a Street & Performance computer harness. Items like a DeWitts aluminum radiator, custom dry-sump lubrication, Taylor Thundervolt plug wires and SPAL electric puller fans ensure rocket-like acceleration. And Billet Specialties coil covers, a Wilwood master cylinder, stainless AN fluid lines and custom billet fuel rail covers enhance traditionally conservative aesthetics. We've said it time and time again, and the old adage still proves true. A pro-tourer simply isn't an authentic pro-tourer unless its significant power enhancements are augmented by significant chassis hardware. That's the only way 100% of the car's performance potential will ever be realized. This Vette's spry LS7 is, first and foremost, augmented by a powdercoated SRIII Motorsports tube chassis that's much more rigid than vintage factory fodder. At the center of that chassis, a fresh Tremec TKO600 5-speed makes good use of carbon fiber synchros, a hydraulic throwout bearing and a modern Z06 clutch. When that clutch grabs, a custom aluminum driveshaft jerks a 1.5-inch narrowed Dana 44 that's seated in a powdercoated fourth generation Corvette suspension and adjustable QA1 coil-overs. Turns come courtesy of modern power rack-and-pinion steering. Smooth and solid stops are provided by a HydraBoosted brake system that squeezes C5 front calipers, and C4 rear calipers, around drilled and slotted EradiSpeed rotors. Power flows through mirrored C6 Z06 wheels, which spin 245/45R17 Firestone Firehawk Wide Ovals in front of 275/40R18 Firestone Firehawk Wide Ovals. And everything, from this Corvette's custom sway bars and color-keyed undercoating to its Rock Valley fuel tank and Walbro fuel pump, is expertly finished, superbly detailed and ready for action. Behind the car's lightweight doors, a Cadillac Cocoa ultraleather interior rides on proven Lizard Skin sound control. Seating comes courtesy of heated, power-adjusted sixth generation Corvette buckets which are anchored in professionally lowered boxes. From the driver's perch, an ultraleather-wrapped dash hangs Dakota Digital VHX gauges next to Bluetooth capable, Sirius XM-compatible audio and Dakota Digital controls for a Vintage Air climate system. Beneath that dash, Cadillac Cocoa carpet frames a cup holder-equipped console that's complete with a traditional shifter and small power window switches. Today, the car sits as an attention-grabbing pavement pounder that's ready to hit the road and dominate the show field! Before we get too far lets decode the VIN and take a look at the Marti Report that accompanies the vehicle. 0F02G******0: 1970 F: Built at Dearborn, Michigan assembly plant 02: Mustang Sportsroof G: 302-4V boss The Marti report explains that this Boss sportsroof is 1 of only 6 ordered with these paint/trim codes and was ordered with the following options: Four-speed close ratio manual transmission Traction-lok differential F60X15 belted tires w/ raised white letters Sport deck rear seat Console Power Steering AM Radio Decor Group Tachometer Wearing a glossy coat of clean, Wimbledon White paint, this pony's current condition is the product of a professional, rotisserie restoration that was completed in late 1993. The car's straight, original sheetmetal was stripped, sanded and bathed in a modern two-stage pigment. And that smooth finish was, after being buffed to a mirror-like shine, trimmed in correct Boss 302 war paint. The classic black Boss stripes start down the hood, dip across the fenders, and travel to the rear of the car, forming one of the most revered and sought after looks of the era. For 1970 the Mustang received a smoother body, a less aggressive face, a flat rear valence and a variety of balanced trim tweaks. The idea was to tame looks that some believed were hindering sales and better the car's performance in crucial SCCA Trans Am events. At the leading edge of this super slick Boss, a correct, Mustang-branded grille hangs bright halogen headlights between familiar 'fender fins', a pristine bumper, clear parking lamps and an aggressive chin spoiler. At the top of that grille, a solid Mustang hood leads the eye to like-new glass that's framed in satin-finished wipers, correct sport mirrors and straight stainless trim. At the sides of that glass, the fenders combine with chrome-trimmed marker lamps and classy chrome door handles to provide an aggressive, yet finished appearance. And at the back of those fenders, a Satin Black valence anchors an ornate fuel filler and segmented tail lights between a correct decklid spoiler, a fresh "MUSTANG" script, a second pristine bumper and wide-set reverse lamps. Motivation is provided by the original numbers matching Ford small block that, thanks to a recent rebuild, makes killer horsepower. That raucous mill wears a matching VIN and was covered in traditional blue skin and centered between crisp, Satin Black fenders. At the top of the motor, a correct Holley 4-barrel rides between finned aluminum valve covers and below a chrome air box that wears the 302-4V BOSS stickers. In front of that carburetor, a red MSD coil sparks the MSD distributor, which sends power through Taylor Spiro Pro wires. At the sides of the motor, long tube Ford headers send spent gases into a true dual exhaust system and, in front of the motor, a large radiator sends water through hoses outfitted with tight hose clamps. The engine bay, much like the rest of the car is a beautiful blend of old school horsepower and modern componentry. Aesthetically, the bottom of this clean Ford has been restored to the same high standards as its striking exterior and pristine engine compartment. Behind the motor, a close-ratio 4-speed spins a Ford 9" with 4.10 gears. Holding that awesome drivetrain off the ground is a correctly restored suspension which features factory power steering. At the ends of that suspension, stopping power is entrusted to modern 4-wheel Baer power disc brakes to provide competent track capability. Overhead, clean, oversprayed floorpans, look solid and ready to hit the road. In the middle of those floors, a fresh true-dual exhaust system pipes roasted dinosaurs through an H-shaped crossover and through chambered mufflers to create a glorious sound. At the sides of that exhaust, 17" Torq Thrust 5-spoke rims twist 255/45R17 Firestone Firehawk Wide Oval rubber. And everything, from this Mustang's stainless fuel tank to its factory sway bars, is fully sorted, ready to show and itching to go! Open this coupe's doors and you'll find nostalgic Detroit styling that's wrapped in traditional Blue vinyl. Restored bench and bucket seats sport freshly pleated covers that, judging by their appearance, enjoyed very little road time. The vintage aura continues onto the dashboard, which offers a pleasant layout of analog gauges. That means all those catchy sayings you've heard about North Carolina country boys being brave, polite and simple are absolutely true. See, gearheads in the Tar Heel state know all it takes to have a good time is something with an engine, something with bullets or somewhere with a little bit of land. And that basic outlook on life is probably why we've built such a great reputation as fun-loving, free-spirited adventurers. The all-original time capsule 'Cuda you see here was custom-ordered by one of North Carolina's most fearless backwoods daredevils, and spent most of its life sitting in his world-class car and motorcycle collection. Not only is the car packed full of rare and unique options, it's also equipped with a top-of-the-line, high performance drivetrain, still covered in original paint and still cradling a 2,010 mile original Hemi V8. We all know time travel, however desirable it may be, as a phenomenon that's only found in fiction. But when you take one look at this untouched Plymouth survivor, the ultimate, lowest mileage reference-grade Hemicuda in existence, you'll begin to question both your sense of time and perception! There's a reason, per auctions results, the 1971 Hemicuda is the most valuable muscle car of all time: they were unique and exclusive cars even when new. And, as with any hand-picked hobby car, you really can't get a feel for this Plymouth's significance until you thoroughly understand its owner. Zachary Taylor Reynolds, born in 1938, lived a life most people only dream about. He was the grandson of the world's biggest tobacco tycoon, the son of a prominent political figure and the heir to seemingly unlimited money, fame and intelligence. By the early 1900s the Reynolds family's penchant for reckless behavior was already a subject of national conversation. But in the midst of the roaring 20s Zach's dad Dick Reynolds, and the uncle Zach was named for, sealed the deal by becoming well-known members of New York's Gotham club scene and transporting Mafia bootleggers on their personal planes. Eventually that risky lifestyle gave way to Zach's uncle dying under mysterious circumstances, and Dick moving back to Winston-Salem to become a pillar of the community and the Mayor of the city. But Dick was a natural wonderer, and although he wanted to settle down and raise his young family, he just couldn't resist a chance to sign up for the Navy and rediscover adventure. Unfortunately his combat service in World War II did not quell his appetite for new acquaintances, and it wasn't long until his wife Elizabeth learned of her pending divorce via a popular radio news show. Now charged with raising four kids by herself, Zach's mother decided he and his younger brother would eschew the prominent private educations of her two eldest sons in favor of public schools and summers on the family's 12,000 acre estate. A few years later, with only one parent in the house and 22 miles of fenced in property at his fingertips, nine year old Zach had already become an avid gun enthusiast; a skill that would later net him a national marksmanship title. And by the time he attended R.J. Reynolds high school, Zach had already established his first motorcycle club and become a race winning rider. Unfortunately the unscathed survival of a few serious wrecks slowly convinced young Zach of his perceived indestructibility, and he began spending most of his nights terrorizing the streets of the town his family essentially founded. The police were none-to-happy about Zach's penchant for blatant street racing and daredevil trickery and, at his mother's urging, made him spend many nights in jail and eventually revoked his license. Not to be outsmarted, and knowing North Carolina doesn't require a license to operate a tractor, Zach simply re-geared one of his family's rigs and happily chugged up and down Winston-Salem's quaint country roads at speeds approaching 60 MPH. Fortunately all those growing pains weren't in vain as Zach ultimately wanted to become an engineering undergrad student. However, his mom insisted he attend Wake Forest University, a nearby college that was devoid of engineering programs, and Zach eventually swapped educational ambition for enlistment in the Navy. After four years honing his mechanical prowess in a Virginia ship yard Zach came home to find that his absentee father, who was displeased with his daredevil lifestyle, had disowned him AND his three brothers. But Zach, already substantially wealthy thanks to several independent family trusts, had no intentions of changing for anyone and began building one of the world's largest private motorcycle and muscle car collections. The Hemicuda you're currently looking at was special ordered from Ed Owens Plymouth in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to be a centerpiece of his amazing collection. Serviced and inspected by Zach's friend Lonnie Maines, it's not only one of the highest optioned 'Cudas ever built, it's also a fully documented, reference-grade survivor that still has many traces of its original owner ingrained in its octane-rich DNA. Zach knew actions speak louder than words, and he also knew there wasn't one single person on this planet he had to impress. That laissez-faire outlook and subsequent freedom from societal norms allowed him to pull off a certain flamboyance and creativity that ONLY someone of his presence and stature can. I mean, do you know anyone else who can don a red jumpsuit, wrap up in a black cape, ham-fist a skull swagger stick and be taken remotely seriously; let alone look straight badass while doing it? No. That's because Zach possessed a perfect balance of danger, charisma and youthful charm that was as intriguing as it was welcoming; and all that character and personality certainly flowed into his cars and bikes. Being the heir to the Reynolds tobacco empire, and having an avid love of Winston cigarettes, Zach predictably ordered his brand spankin' new 'Cuda in Chrysler's FE5 Rallye Red, a V1X black vinyl top and V6X Hemi billboards. When the car arrived at Ed Owens' dealership a few touch ups were performed on its hood and fenders, 70s assembly line quality being what it was, and the black billboards were automatically accented with white Hemi letters and white outlining stripes that continued onto the car's profile. As any decent daredevil knows, you can't be good at cheating death unless you taunt death; so in addition to having his name painted right above both of the car's door handles Zach commenced decorating its fenders, hood and trunk with his typical array of skull decals, ace of spades decals and American flag decals. For the first 30 years of its life, this is exactly how the car would remain. It was only after a high caliber Mopar collector Steven Juliano bought it from a North Carolina museum that it was returned to 100% factory luster. Steven determined the only way to safely separate the vintage decals from the vintage paint was to carefully scrape them with his finger nails. The painted "ZACH" letters on the doors were whittled to a mere outline using a mild buffing compound. And the entire car was treated to a through polish and shine. Today, 16 years after that cosmetic freshening, this 'Cuda sits as one fantastically straight head turner which possesses new car solidity and looks as if it could have rolled out of Dodge Main yesterday. And lest you think Zach's spirit isn't still with the car, one careful look at its doors reveals the faint outline of his official brandings! Of course, even without Zach's unique aesthetic tweaks, this sinister stoplight brawler is still very easy on the eyes and STILL some of the meanest looking muscle to ever grace American roads. At the front of the car, an optional Rallye Red multiport grille hangs four 1971-exclusive halogen headlights above a showroom fresh chrome bumper, original chrome road lamps, flush-fitting parking lights and optional wing spoilers. At the top of the car, a fresh air hood props stainless hood pins, a small chrome "PLYMOUTH" script and a "hemicuda" branded shaker in front of original tinted glass that's cleared by turtleback wipers and framed by original stainless trim. At the sides of the car, original Hemi Fender's hang small turn signal indicators and 1971-exclusive fender gills in front of optional body-matched racing mirrors, satin-finished door handles, optional door edge guards and dent-free rocker mouldings. And at the back of the car, a traditional flat black valence centers a cool silver "'cuda by PLYMOUTH" emblem and 1971-exclusive tail lights between original rear window louvers, an optional decklid wing, a second showroom fresh chrome bumper and correct stainless exhaust tips. Despite his loved ones' constant attempts to dampen his desire for fast cars with storms of personal threats, Zach always drove the most impressive metal in town. There was the infamous Catalina 421 Super Duty he purchased for "family transportation". There was the 140 MPH NASCAR-built Cobra he bought to outrun a few specific loudmouths. There was his custom-built, rocket powered Ford Galaxie that made a 200 MPH pass down Interstate 40 and became unofficially known as The Tobacco King. Hell he even had five planes, including one custom-built Pitts, which earned him both a national aerobatics title and the nickname Cigarette City Flash! The point is: Zach ALWAYS had a need for speed and an appetite for the very best. And given how well he and his friends maintained his lust-worthy collection, the engine bay of this top-dog 'Cuda is exactly how you'd expect it to be. There's an all-original, low-mileage Hemi which wears a correct 2468330-2 casting number above a matching 295999 partial VIN. There's a gracious amount of original Hemi Orange overspray that creeps onto the engine's closest ancillary components. And there's original Rallye Red paint covering a firewall and inner fenders that look so fresh they've likely never seen a mechanic's cover. Fuel and air are supplied by two 4-barrel Carter AFB carburetors which are bolted to a high performance intake manifold. Compression is sparked by high quality Chrysler Electronic Suppression wires which are snapped onto an original dual point distributor. Spent gases are expelled through original low restriction exhaust manifolds which seal tight below an obviously vintage set of Organisol coated valve covers. And resultant combustion is cooled by a 26 inch heavy duty radiator that comes complete with original hoses, original squeeze clamps and an original fan shroud. Visually, this reference grade engine compartment is clean and understated... Well, as understated as an all-original, matching numbers HEMI can be. The engine cranks immediately and runs just as well today as when it rolled into Ed Owens showroom. And there are tons of little details like specific fuel lines, original carburetor hardware, original brake booster hardware, original coil wiring, mild weave hoses and original factory-fill fluids that can't even be duplicated by today's nicest NOS and concours cars. Ace stunt pilot or not, I don't think Zach ever got the wheels of this solid Plymouth off the ground. But if you decide to do just that, hopefully via a conventional lift instead of an actual flight plan, you'll find a clean original undercarriage that appears so untouched it could have been teleported straight from 1971. The high powered big block spins an original A727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission that's branded with a correct 3515849 Barracuda code and a matching 295999 partial VIN. And that heavy duty gear slinger churns torque through an optional Dana 60 rear end that's still equipped with a tough Sure Grip differential, killer 4.10 gears and an original factory paper strap that's branded with a build sheet matching 026 part number. At the front of the car an original torsion bar suspension, which is complete with a thick sway bar, specially tuned shocks and original control arms that still display a thin layer of factory Cosmoline, helps increase both drivability and track times. At the back of the car, the aforementioned Dana pumpkin utilizes original leaf springs and a second pair of specially tuned shocks to ensure tight turns and drama free launches. Stops come courtesy of an optional power brake system that employs optional front discs and traditional rear drums. Turns feels firm and responsive thanks to a factory optioned power steering. Spent gases are whisked away by an original true dual exhaust system which features an H-pipe crossover, rear-mounted resonators and Chrysler branded turbo mufflers. And all this first rate hardware proudly stands on original 15 inch Rallye wheels which wrap original F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs around pristine center caps and spotless trim rings. Aesthetically, the bottom of this Super Track Pack 'Cuda is just as reference-grade as its engine bay. And all its original details, including optional undercoated floors, hasty paint drips, standard chalk marks, steel chassis hardware and an old school stainless gas tank are precisely where the factory left them. Ever hear the old southern saying "I told you this story to tell you another story"? Well, I'm going to tell you a short story to tell you an even shorter story. While recovering from a motorcycle accident that landed him in the hospital, Zach ordered a small Ham radio to stave off boredom. That little bit of exposure to the hobby excited him so much he built an entire two-room system in his house that could broadcast worldwide. Among other people, Zack often talked to the Shah of Iran and Arizona native Barry Goldwater; and his signal became so powerful the FCC would regularly visit his house to complain about his interference with local radio stations. Now, I told you that story to highlight a very rare option in Zach's 'Cuda. Because he was such an audiophile, he was one of the few guys to actually check the order form for a premium factory stereo that came complete with a microphone jack and a recorder. Of course, when it comes to most Hemicudas, there are two things to consider: 1) They were bought mainly for performance, and 2) The addition of Chrysler's almost $900 Hemi usually didn't leave much room for frivolous extra-cost luxuries. But I guess one of the many perks of being a millionaire heir to the world's largest tobacco company is checking the box for pretty much anything you want, anytime. Inside the car a rare split bench front, full bench rear seat combination displays virtually no signs of wear at all. Opposite those seats, a fresh black dash hangs and a fully-functional Rallye instrument cluster above a standard Music Master AM/FM radio, an optional locking glove box and a lit ashtray that still conceals butts from Zach's beloved Winston cigarettes. On the doors, sculpted panels proudly hang bold "'Cuda" emblems above optional power window switches, integrated door handles and chrome lock latches. The driver interfaces with the road through an optional three-spoke Rim Blow steering wheel and a chrome column shifter. And the passengers stow their cargo in a virtually untouched trunk that props an original mat and an original Space Saver spare tire below optional rear window speakers, an optional rear window defroster, and factory wing springs. Just in case this world class Tar Heel survivor's amazing story isn't enough to impress you, it also comes with extensive documentation and the provenance of being part of high profile Mopar collector Steven Juliano's ultimate collection. According to the car's Mopar Action spread Steven, who exclusively buys Mopars "the hardest of the hardcore collectors can only dream about", wanted to find the ultimate Hemicuda and subsequently put the word out in his inner circle of Mopar aficionados. An associate of well-known restorer Roger Gibson mentioned Zach's 2,000 mile survivor and, after a few leads, Steven finally got a number and made the call. The owner promptly told Steven the car wasn't for sale but did eventually agree to let him look at it. So Steven grabbed fellow Mopar aficionado Tony D'Agostino, landed in the piedmont of North Carolina and, after two hours of crawling all over this 'Cuda, realized he had actually found the kind of survivor that's usually reserved for car guy fantasies. Upon asking Tony his thoughts, he received the response "If you don't buy this car right now, I will. And I'll never need to own another Mopar as long as I live." And that's all Steven needed to hear to blurt the word "DEAL!" before the owner even finished naming his price. Throughout his life "Dr. Zach" was in the company of celebrities, rock stars and what most considered the upper crust of society. But no matter who visited him, or who he traveled to see, he always called Winston-Salem his home and Winston-Salem residents his closest friends. Unfortunately time waits for no one and Zach, now pushing his 40s, had suffered a series of accidents and was beginning to have premonitions of dying in a plane crash. At the behest of his wife, he decided to quit flying altogether and settled into being a mentor and friend for community kids who had long admired his daredevil spirit. One of those kids, a local 18 year old, had just gotten his pilot's license and was eager to take Zach up to show him a few moves. Given his premonitions Zach was secretly reluctant, but his kind nature would never allow him say no to a kid. On that fateful evening in 1979, the tenth anniversary of Zach's national aerobatics championship, he would take off from his namesake uncle's regional airport and perish in a terrible plane crash. His friends and fans in Winston-Salem remember him as someone that, despite his privileged status, was always magnetic, warm, welcoming and exceedingly generous. And one friend described his perpetual youth by saying: "When we were 10, Zach was 14. When we were 19, Zach was still 14". As an avid gearhead, it seems only fitting that Zach Reynolds would pass his gift of perpetual youth to his amazing cars.
