Designed to bridge the gap between the Ford Deluxe and the Lincoln Zephyr, the Mercury was introduced in late 1938. Although the Ford family resemblance is clear, it rides on a unique frame, shares no body panels with any Ford, and is powered by a larger 239 cubic inch flathead V8 that made an extra 10 horsepower. Finished in correct and traditional Sahara Tan, this gorgeous Merc shows you why original colors always look best on old cars. Showing a lovely soft glow that is entirely appropriate, the paint and bodywork on this car are very good throughout, with the only real demerits being simply age-related. It's got a very period-correct look, with paint that shines up but isn't too perfect, excellent panel fit, and details that make the car look upscale, including pinstripes along the belt moldings. It is also loaded with accessories, including grille and bumper guards, fog lights, and a driver's side mirror, which ,believe it or not, wasn't on the standard equipment list. The running boards have been restored using the proper textured rubber, and all the chrome remains excellent. This is a car that will get a lot of appreciative second-glances, one because it's not quite a 1940 Ford, and two, because it's just so beautifully executed. Light tan leatherette upholstery gives the Mercury some of its elegant appeal, and the restoration that made the body look so good also addressed the interior. Correct materials and patterns were used throughout, and it shows only minor signs of use since it was completed. Tan carpets are a plush upgrade compared to the rubber floor mats in the base Fords, and this would be the first year for a column-mounted shifter, was sweeping the industry in an effort to increase legroom. The unique instrument panel is one of the earliest examples of driver ergonomics, with the full array of gauges angled upwards along with the steering column to face the driver. All the gauges are operational, and it includes a correct AM radio, which, as is typical, is sadly not working. A snug-fitting tan canvas convertible top is manually actuated, but folds easily into the well behind the seats where it's hidden under a matching tan boot. Even with the top down, the trunk is commodious thanks to the 4-inch wheelbase stretch compared to a Ford, and it has been fully carpeted for a luxurious look. Ford's justifiably famous flathead was heavily revised for use in the Mercury, effectively bridging the horsepower gap between the standard V8 and the Zephyr's V12 without added complexity. Steadily upgraded over the years, the 1940 flathead in this Merc offers insert type bearings for longevity and an improved cooling system to eliminate the early flatheads' overheating woes. Finished in proper olive green paint, the flathead is nicely detailed with a correct carburetor and oil bath air cleaner, a recent fuel pump, and a proper generator up top which still generates six volts. Underneath, the chassis appears to be pretty original, but it's in good order and sports a great-sounding exhaust system that gives it a wonderful flathead burble. 16-inch wheels wear gorgeous hubcaps and trim rings, plus a set of BFGoodrich wide whites for a period perfect look. With an interesting history, including a movie appearance, this is a very rare pre-war Mercury convertible that's also one of the best-driving of all flatheads. Here for sale is this real nice 1946 Mercury eight deluxe model with the original flat eight motor, 3 on the tree, this car runs and drives very nice for a 1946 Mercury, the previous owner of this particular car was a member of the early ford V8 club for many many years, this car was never restored but was painted many years ago, there is no rust on the car and the whole car is very solid. The car also has the original service booklet and rear skirts which I have on the car now, as you can see by the pictures this car is a very nice example of what one of these old Mercs should be, very solid and runs great. Fortunately, this Merc is also a wonderful car in every way, so the flathead definitely went out with a bang. With all the focus on vintage hot-rodding, it's easy to forget that your parents and grandparents drove cars like this to work every day. With that in mind, you shouldn't be surprised that this one works as well as it does or that it looks so polished. The Mercury brand was hitting on all eight cylinders in 1953, boasting impressive sales and a rejuvenated image thanks to cars like this. The bright red paint is pretty close to the original Siren Red, and with that contrasting white roof, it has a high-profile look that fits the Monterey's upscale status. Coming out of long-term ownership (something like 60 years!), it's important to note that this car has never had a frame-off restoration, so it has looked this good pretty much its entire life. It's been repainted, but the super straight bodywork comes from clean Texas living not a restorer's tools, and it still fits together with a precision that feels authentic. Heavy chrome bumpers are in very good condition, and it appears that most of the stainless trim is original, so it could be easily buffed and polished to really stand out. The two-tone red and black interior was probably freshened at the same time the car was painted and shows almost no signs of use since then. The vinyl upholstery is durable and comfortable, stitched into factory-correct patterns that value simplicity over flash. The dashboard, however, is a different story with its futuristic look, floating instrument panel, and aircraft-style control levers for the secondary controls. Handsome door panels with contrasting off-white window moldings are in excellent shape and the headliner remains taut and wrinkle-free. Auxiliary gauges are neatly installed under the dash, the better to monitor the warmed-over flathead up front, but that seems to be the lone modification inside. The factory AM radio is still in the dash, and this car offers spacious accommodations in the back seat. The sanitary trunk is neatly finished and includes a full-sized spare tire. The 1953 Mercury flathead V8 is the one all the hot-rodders want, and for good reason: it's the biggest and most powerful of the bunch. With 255 cubic inches to work with, it's ripe for upgrades, and this one has been recently rebuilt. The most obvious tweaks are the Edelbrock aluminum heads and headers, but it's also got a mild camshaft inside and a 12-volt electrical system. It's not exactly race-ready, but it moves the tidy Merc effortlessly with that characteristic flathead burble. Part of the joy of a flathead like this is the way it goes about its business with great torque and a fun exhaust note that'll have you blipping the throttle as you go through tunnels. It's painted bright red, as it should be, and still carries neat little details like the mechanical fuel pump up top and Ford script hoses with correct clamps. The dual exhaust is recent and sounds exactly right, and the 3-speed manual transmission is a pleasure to slip through the gears. New 215/70/15 whitewall radials retain a certain vintage look but deliver modern handling that you'll definitely appreciate. A neat 2-door Merc with flathead power, this Monterey is a no-disappointments car that proves you don't need a roadster to have fun with a flathead. 1950 Hudson Super Eight Coupe - Only 1,074 produced - Restoration completed 2009-2010 - Very Stock Car This is a very nice restored car. I bought it with the intention of making it a mild custom, but it is so nice, stock, and rare that I can't bring myself to modify it. You just don't find such rare cars in bone-stock condition, so I want to pass it to someone who will appreciate it in its current state. The restoration was completed in 2009-2010 and still shows very well. Paint, chrome (replated), interior are all very nice. No rust anywhere. No dings/dents or scratches that I can see. The only flaws I see on the car are some water staining on the interior cloth panel of the driver's door and some paint bubbling around the vinyl top where it meets the body above the rear deck. Straight-eight engine, three-on-the-tree. Runs and drives as a restored car should. The front bumper-guards were not reinstalled, but come with the car (replated). Also included are books/manuals, as well as a full photo album documenting the restoration. Due to the restoration, the true mileage is unknown. Clean California title, which is in the name of the previous owner (signed). If that is a problem, I may be willing to get it transferred into my name before completing the sale, but I prefer to sell with the current title. Please contact me with questions. A chopped cruiser that benefitted from an extensive, 5-year restoration, this awesome coupe began its new life as a show stopping head turner back in 2012. That restoration, conducted by Sports Car Collision of McAdenville, North Carolina, saw the car's voluptuous body stripped all the way to bare metal. Once that metal was super solid and virtually flawless, shaved doors were complemented with a pancaked hood and power operated decklid. That thoroughly tweaked profile was sealed in a custom coat of pearl 2-stage. And today, this razor-sharp kustom is one sizzling classic that looks cooler than pretty much every car at any show its owner chooses to attend! The styling of Mercury's first generation Eight was fairly successful in differentiating the brand from its comparable Ford cousin; a virtue that continues to fuel to the car's timeless desirability. At the front of this clean custom, a polished grille rides between a nosed hood and frenched tri-bar headlights. Behind that hood, creased and stainless-trimmed glass rides between capped wipers and polished mirrors. Beneath that glass, filled fender seams ride between polished trim and color-keyed fender skirts. And at the back of those seams, a decked trunk rides between small, chrome-trimmed taillights. ENGINE Like it or not, sometimes it's good to break tradition. And breaking tradition is one thing that makes this Merc so impressive. Lift the car's domed hood and you'll find 454 cubic inches of big block muscle that mixes miles of power with mountains of torque! At the top of the fully detailed mill, a finned and polished air cleaner feeds a coated Holley 770 that's throttled by a quality Lokar linkage. The resulting energy mixture makes its way from a coated Weiand intake to cast iron Chevrolet heads. When those heads flood the cylinders, a Delco-Remy HEI distributor sequences fire through loomed Taylor plug wires. Resultant gases are jettisoned through ceramic-coated block hugger headers. Cooling is provided by a beefy Walker radiator, which rides behind a giant electric pusher fan. Charge comes courtesy of a polished alternator that, along with a coated AC compressor, spins behind aesthetically pleasing pulleys. And overall, the car's smooth engine compartment is exceptionally clean, featuring details like a chrome brake booster, MQQN Equipment breathers, proven Haywire wiring, and polished and finned valve covers. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Every good street rod has a solid foundation. Flip this channeled classic upside down and you'll find a roster of mechanical improvements that mix vintage looks with modern mobility. A tough 700R4 4-speed drives a sturdy Ford 9-inch, which pushes a fully boxed chassis. At the nose of that chassis, a Fat Man front-half centers power rack-and-pinion steering between pliable air bags. At the back of that chassis, a modern 4-bar setup utilizes two more air bags to increase grip and maintain ride height. Power front disc and rear drum brakes are a welcome addition and big performance upgrade. There's a free-flowing, true-dual exhaust system that makes good use of Flowmaster dual-chamber mufflers. There's barely a hint of chrome on the body because the pearlescent silver paint shines as vivid as brightwork in the sunlight. The lack of bumpers and integrated rear fender skirts gives this two-door a sleek profile like a silver bullet. In fact the only time the streamlined appearance is broken up are in the cool wave-style hood scoops that are an indication that this one is just as much about "go" as it is for "show"...But more on that in a moment. Open the door, and you'll realize nothing is left from the 1950s in this complete custom interior. While it all looks spectacular, there's also some real practicality here, too. The tan leather seats have modern bolstering for long-haul comfort; stylized floor mats can hide dirty shoeprints; and everyone gets a cup holder. Plus, there's a lot of comfort built in with the AM/FM/CD changer stereo, power windows, power locks, remote door openers, and an overhead console that controls the ice cold air conditioning running modern R-134a. But of course the driver gets the most treats. Beyond the cool leather and chrome steering wheel is a custom digital dashboard that reports the full gauge package from behind a single blue-faced panel. The highly stylized custom build continues under the hood. A fuel-injected 350 cubic-inch V8 borrowed from a Corvette lives in the engine bay. Well, aside from being an awesomely affordable V8-powered ragtop, it's the Mercury version of the Torino. This 1968 Montego convertible has a lot going for it, including a great color combination, 302 cubic inches of V8 power, and room for the whole family inside. This is the car that spawned the awesome Mercury Eliminator, although this is its more user-friendly sibling which is a very handsome mid-sized convertible. The white paint would be called Wimbledon White if it were wearing a Ford badge, and it shines up beautifully. It was likely repainted not too long ago and it has a very correct look overall; no stripes, no add-ons, and all the original trim was retained so it looks right. The car's proportions are excellent and the bodywork disguises its size rather well, but make no mistake, this is a big, comfortable luxury car. It doesn't appear to have ever been rusty or wrecked, and replacement panels for this car are virtually non-existent, so you know the sheetmetal is OEM-grade. Factory trim includes big chrome bumpers that are in excellent shape, contrasting trim along the rockers, as well as a unique woodgrained insert on the trunk lid to make it stand out in a crowd. The red interior is quite possibly original and shows extremely well. Bench seats mean there's plenty of room for everyone and details like the door panels and dash pad are in excellent condition, particularly for a car that's spent its life in the sun. It's possible that the carpets have been replaced, since they're in very good condition with no fading, and the upscale Mercury also includes a simulated burled walnut dash applique that warms things up a bit. Five round pods house the gauges, indicator lamps, and controls for the heater and defroster, and it's a cool look. Underneath, there are secondary controls as well as the original AM radio, which is due for an upgrade. If there's any single item showing its age, it's the steering wheel, which has a few cracks in the rim but is otherwise serviceable as-is. The black power convertible top is in good condition and offers a glass rear window and a matching red boot for when it's folded. The trunk is pretty original and could stand to be cleaned up a bit, but there's plenty of room as well as a full-sized spare tire. The 302 cubic inch V8 under the hood is smooth, torquey, and ready to rumble. Recently rebuilt, it runs superbly with a great eight-cylinder sound and the easy competence that only full-sized American luxury cars can deliver. It was correctly detailed with Ford Blue paint, original air cleaner, and fresh decals, so it looks great against the satin black inner fenders. All the ancillaries are new, too, including plugs, wires, radiator, master cylinder, and a rebuilt carburetor. The front suspension was rebuilt, there are new springs and shocks all around, and the 3-speed automatic transmission was recently serviced so it shifts properly. 3.00 gears out back make it a great cruiser that never seems to work very hard and a fresh alignment ensures that the 225/70/14 BFGoodrich T/A radials track straight. Look at the quality of the car and then the price and you'll have to admit that this is a heck of a lot of ragtop for not a lot of cash. BODYWORK/TRIM Officially baptized in to the Kustom world just a few years back, this slick sled has been carefully finessed and expertly finished to the absolute highest standards. The smooth surfaces that make up the car's sinister profile are entirely comprised of clean fiberglass that's been chopped, channeled and laboriously block-sanded. That lightweight shell is dressed in 10 coats of Porsche Basalt Metallic base that's been splashed with a hint of pearl, sealed in thick clear and lovingly buffed to a trophy-winning shine. And today, this Merc rolls as one excellent-looking custom that's completely devoid of filler, questionable seams, strange bulges or anything else that might demerit its otherwise superior construction. The styling of Mercury's second generation Eight was successful in both ending the monotony of warmed-over pre-war designs and differentiating the brand from its comparable Ford cousin: a trick that spelled BIG sales success. Those newfound sales made the car immensely popular with customizers, and in 1949 the first lead sled, built by Sam Barris, pioneered what would become hot rodding's definitive '50s custom. At the front of this clean sedan, a color-keyed DeSoto grille rides between a nosed hood, frenched tri-bar headlights and small LED parking lamps. Behind that hood, tinted and creased glass rides inside a smoothed cowl, a small mirror and shaved, electronically actuated doors. Beneath that glass, a simple, monochromatic profile showcases the car's classic Mercury lines. And at the back of that profile, a decked, electronically actuated trunk rides between small LED taillights. ENGINE Like it or not, sometimes it's good to break tradition. And breaking tradition is one thing that makes this Merc so impressive. Lift the car's domed hood and you'll find 454 cubic inches of big block muscle that, thanks to a sweet set of polished valve covers, does a great impression of Chevy's 502 cubic inch monster motor. At the top of the fully detailed mill, a polished, open-element air cleaner feeds a coated, 750cfm Edelbrock that's plumbed with braided fluid lines and a polished, canister-style filter. The resulting energy mixture makes its way from an Edelbrock Performer 2.0 intake to cast iron Chevrolet heads. When those heads flood the cylinders, a familiar points distributor sequences fire between a chrome-capped coil and loomed Taylor Thundervolt wires. Resultant gases are jettisoned through powder-coated, long-tube headers. The orange block's cooling is provided by a custom aluminum radiator that's fitted with chrome flex tubes, two SPAL puller fans and a sleek, fiberglass shroud. Charge comes courtesy of a polished Powermaster alternator that, along with a polished AC compressor and aluminum water pump, spins on an aesthetically pleasing March pulley system. And overall, the smooth, body-matched engine compartment is exceptionally clean, featuring details such as polished breathers, polished fluid tanks, polished dipsticks and a proven Wilwood master cylinder. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Take a look under this incredible custom and you'll find a bent-tube Art Morrison skeleton that's been augmented with a series of excellent upgrades. Opposite the car's channeled and tubbed floors, a RideTech Shockwave suspension utilizes modern power rack-and-pinion steering to combine pleasant road manners with a killer stance. At the center of that suspension, a 2,500 RPM stall converter jerks a beefy 700R4 4-speed, which spins a familiar Ford 9-inch around 3.55 gears. At the sides of that awesome driveline, the aforementioned headers roll spent gases through large stainless pipes and throaty Magnaflow mufflers. At the corners of that exhaust, bright red calipers and 11-inch discs provide solid, predictable stops. And, on the outside of those discs, 20-inch DUBs spin 255/35 Mickey Thompson Street Comps in front of 275/40 Mickey Thompson Street Comps. INTERIOR Like its drivetrain and body, the car's supple interior is a completely custom creation that highlights technology while honoring heritage. 2-tone ultraleather seats, which are both soft and supportive, ride on clean gray carpet that's stretched between handsome aluminum sills. In front of those seats, a '49 Merc dash anchors Classic Instruments All American telemetry beside custom lettering. At the base of that dash, a custom console centers remote-controlled Pioneer audio and lighted Vintage Air twist knobs above small accessory switches and a classy Lokar shifter. Opposite that console, flamed side panels hang hidden courtesy lamps and modernist armrests in front of power-operated windows. Above those panels, a billet mirror leads a stitched headliner.
