With a huge enthusiast following, they've become the smart hobby car for today's world, offering wonderful '50s styling in a compact package that's easy on the fuel as well as the eyes. This particular 1958 Met brings with it a long list of upgrades, including A/C. Let that sink in for a moment; someone spent a goodly sum of cash to make this little car a delight to drive. Now some experts might be able to find a few things that aren't quite factory, but the fact is the fit and finish on this car are light years better than original and befitting of a car worth four times as much. The jaunty two-tone Mardi Gras Red over Frost White paint scheme is original, but was only applied after the diminutive body was worked to really sparkle, and it really paid off. Check out how tight the door gaps are, how crisp the grooves in the window sill are, and how crisp the line between red and white is across the hood. It's not quite perfect, but it's far, far nicer than a car at this price point has any right to be. All the chrome was professionally refinished, too, including the egg crate grille and unique bumpers. The car is tiny, no question about it, but you'll find that it's easy to get comfortable inside. The split bench seat has been upholstered in original style houndstooth fabric with vinyl accents, and legroom is good, even for six-footers. Dramatic black and white door panels almost look like modern art and the sweeping black dash is handsome as well as functional. All the relevant instruments are clustered ahead of the driver, with an auxiliary temperature gauge installed under the dash, along with the A/C. The AM radio is neatly integrated into the dash just above the ignition and offers big, easy-to-use knobs, although it is sadly not functional. New black carpets, seat belts, and new floor mats help it feel comfortable and quiet inside and while there's a back seat, it's probably best for storage or small children. With the spare tire stowed on the outside of the bodywork, the trunk will easily swallow a weekend's worth of luggage. The Austin A90 donated its 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 50 horsepower. Bearing in mind the car's modest size and weight, performance is energetic and you'll find yourself zipping around corners, one of the many benefits of the lightweight design. The engine wears correct green paint on the engine itself and properly finished accessories around it. A 1-barrel Zenith carburetor handles induction chores and a reproduction exhaust system gives it an authentic sound that's sporty without being annoying. A long list of upgrades include an electric fuel pump, modern GM alternator, new engine and transmission mounts, rebuilt brakes, and a new fuel tank out back, so it's ready to cruise. The three-speed manual transmission shifts nicely thanks to new bushings and the rear gears have been changed from 4.22s to 3.90s, so it's pretty comfortable on the highway. You'll also be pleased to note that tires are diminutive 155/80/13s, which ride well and are incredibly affordable, making this a hobby car that's easy on the wallet now and in the future. A lovely little car, this Nash is way out at the far end of the quality scale with no hope of recovering the restoration costs. What that means is a big score for the lucky new owner, who gets to enjoy one of the best for a fraction of the cost. Despite its small size, it has a huge enthusiast following the wonderful '50s style, in a compact package, that's easy on the fuel as well as the eyes. The Metropolitan had American design flair with its full chrome front end and continental kit, but it's packed into a European size. That's what makes these cars so cool today. A series III model like this one is especially desirable because they finally added chrome down the side, which also provided for a dividing line to create a two-tone finish. This one carries its original Autumn Yellow and Frost White colors, but it has been resprayed to make this little guy shine his brightest. The British-built Metropolitan is small, but the people at American Motors knew they had to import something that was going to fit two of their countrymen without a problem. The white vinyl bench is roomier than the car's size suggests and the split back does a fine job of keeping the driver, and passenger, comfortable. It looks pristine and matches the white vinyl folding roof. The driver gets one large main gauge pod dominated by a speedometer, but since the car was sourced from Britain, it happens to be a Smiths readout. So just imagine the looks on people's faces as you compare this Met to Jaguars and Aston Martins. The Metropolitan is an interesting Anglo-American hybrid built in Europe, exclusively for the US-market by a US automaker. As a result, it carries a 1489 cc inline-four, built by Austin in England. It's a rugged little engine that delivers spirited performance in the lightweight Metropolitan. This was a popular motor in Europe, and so parts are still easy to find and inexpensive. Like a good frugal European, the fuel mileage generally hovers in the 30+ MPG range, making this a fantastic car if you're on a budget but still like to get out and drive. The three-speed manual transmission has light action, and with smart gearing, it cruises at 60 MPH without complaint, and without being buzzy on the highway. With a tight turning radius and nippy handling, this American Nash feels like a proper European import. Up for sale is a Classic 1961 Nash Metropolitan Convertible. Up until 2014, this car was used for parades and Sunday Drives. It has not been in the rain for over 22 years. The previous owner took meticulous care of this car. The interior is in excellent condition, there is trunk access from the inside as well as from the outside. The chrome is in good condition, minimal pitting, scratches and rust. The convertible top open, closes and stores very easily. There is a bonnet cover to cover over the top, when it is down. It comes with the original jack and lug wrench. The odometer show 24,673 miles. I believe these are original but can not verify that. The ID tag is tarnished and reads what I believe to be Body 35948 Model 561 Trim T 971 Paint P914 -- P919 The Chassis Serial NO. E 85545 All 4 hub caps are in very good condition. With a few touch ups in the paint and chrome, this would be a Great Show Car, or with a tune up, it is ready for the Summer Sun and Parades. 1951 Nash Statesman "Streamlined Aerodynamic" Bathtub Nash The Nash Statesman was built between 1949 and 1951, the cars proved to be very popular and found use in police departments around the US with a shorter wheel base then the Ambassadors. The Statesman power plant is known for its reliability and sturdiness from its decades old design of the L-Head Nash Light Six engine that was designed back in the 1920’s. By 1952 the “Bathtub” Nash’s ended their reign and to this date is still considered one of their most popular cars. This 1951, Post World War II, Nash is in amazing condition. The more you look at it the more you will fall in love. It is a time warp car all the way down to its oil change tags in the door jam. The car has had a repaint although the jams appear to be in its original finish. The trim on this Statesman is impressive from the bumpers, body trim, emblems and mirrors. The brightwork will not disappoint. I think it says a lot that this car appears to have lived a majority of its life in Sunny California as evidenced by its overall condition. This car’s features include: NO RUST, flying lady hood ornament, fine front suspension, beautiful paint with pin stripe accents, a large trunk, and all original equipment. The1500 cc engine starts right up, runs perfectly, does not use oil, and can get 30 MPG (or close to it). Feel those 53 HP kick in! The transmission and clutch work perfectly as well. This car went through a full restoration in 1998 and has been kept in excellent condition since then. This car has new exhaust, shocks, radiator, gas tank, and a new AM/FM/CD player with new speakers. Her upholstery and headliner is newer and in very good condition. This Met has been switched over to 12 volts and sports a new alternator. It has wide, white wall tires that have good tread, and new hub caps. The paint shines like new. As far as I know she has been kept indoors since the restoration. This is further evidenced by the 5+ car show awards that have been won. This includes one award in a very large show from summer of 2013. Like most other 50+ year old automobiles there are a few shortcomings. It leaks a little oil like most Mets, the horn button has been moved below the dash, and the driver’s side window must be pulled or pushed while cranking. And, despite what some might call awkward proportions, this graceful classic is both striking and handsome! As a vintage car connoisseur, you simply can't go wrong with '50s-era steel. Naturally, this American's fully-finished body rides on a fully-restored chassis that's been assembled to exacting standards. The smooth small block torques a tough C4 3-speed, which spins a familiar Ford 8-inch. Mechanically, the Nash starts up, runs drives and shifts well. The engine and transmission feel good and don't make any bad noises, rattles or vibrations that they shouldn't. The body is in very good condition with some rust in the rockers but elsewhere, little to none. The car has been repainted and is a good job at best, but shines well and is a solid "10 footer". All of the chrome is intact but pitting and all of the original ID plates and trim are intact. The interior is where the car could use the most attention with a sagging headliner, and worn seat covers and door panels. However all of the accessory switches, emblems, handles and arm rests are intact and seem to be functioning properly. The tires and wheels are in decent shape as well. The original gas tank is missing and has been replaced with a plastic tank in the trunk. The Nash would make a fairly easy restoration or could be touched up slightly and driven as-is.
