1971 Oldsmobile 442Ultra Rare, Matching Numbers, W30 ConvertibleDocumented in the W30 Registry!1 of 10 ProducedEarliest Production Known to Exist & Loaded with Factory Options!Oldsmobile produced only 110 442 W-30 convertibles in 1971, only 10 of which, including this stunning example, were factory equipped with air conditioning. This car is included in the W-30 Registry and has been inspected and verified as an authentic W-30 by a noted W-30/442 authority. A very rare example of Doctor Oldsmobile's finest muscle-car convertible, this W-30 retains its original drivetrain comprising its original numbers-matching engine, transmission and rear end. The engine and W-30-only OW-code transmission bear the original VIN stampings and the original rear axle housing shows the unique code for W-30 cars equipped with factory air conditioning. The car retains the original parts exclusive to the W-30 package, including the original red fender liners, factory GM H-code cylinder heads, OW-code automatic transmission, factory intake manifold, correctly stamped 7041257 carb, 1112034 distributor and other parts unique to the W-30. Finished in its original color of Matador Red and complemented with a White top and interior and White rally stripes on its W-25 Open Air Induction Ram Air Induction Hood, this is one of the most striking color combinations that ever left the Lansing, Michigan, plant. This car is not only the top-of-the-line W-30 but was also ordered with a multitude of options making it even more rare. The factory options list includes the W-30 455 CI engine, 400 Turbo Hydra-Matic high-shift-point automatic transmission with Hurst Dual Gate shifter, factory air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, power top, power steering, tilt column, sport steering wheel, rally gauges, AM/FM Radio with 8-Track tape player, power front disc brakes, and power trunk release. It would likely be impossible to find a more thoroughly equipped and visually arresting W-30 convertible with factory air conditioning. Perhaps the earliest W-30 convertible built, it is believed to be a factory show car. According to GM factory records it was delivered to the GM factory warehouse in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in January of ’71 destined for Midwest car-show duty. A body-off restoration was performed in the mid '80s, when typical rust repair was necessary due to the car’s Midwestern origins. Body panels were sourced from a rust-free donor car and used to keep the car all-original GM sheet metal. After passing through a handful of long-term owners, this factory-air W-30 convertible was purchased by muscle-car collector Mike Guarise. Because of the significance of this car, Mike had the car restored again in 2014 to a much higher standard. The car is a pleasure to drive, as it runs and drives as a properly sorted GM A-body should.HIGHLIGHTS- 1 of 10 produced with factory air conditioning - Original matching numbers drivetrain - Listed in the W-30 registry - One of the earliest W-30 Convertibles built and believed to be a factory show car - Delivered in January 1971 to the GM factory warehouse in Milwaukee, Wisconsin - Body-off restoration completed in 2015 - Very highly optioned - W-25 OAI Ram Air hood - Original Red fender liners - 455 CI engine with GM H-code heads - TH400 high shift point automatic transmission - Correct intake manifold, carburetor and distributor - Hurst Dual Gate shifter - Factory air conditioning - Power convertible top - Power steering and front disc brakes - Power windows and trunk release - Cruise control, tilt steering column - Rally gauges, sport steering wheel - AM/FM radio with 8-Track player - Original GM sheet metal - Highly desirable and factory correct Matador Red with White Rally stripes and interior 5/21/20151971 Oldsmobile 442 2 Door Convertible (W-30)Values Original MSRPLow Retail Value This vehicle would be in mechanically functional condition, needing only minor reconditioning. Up for sale is a 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass Vista Cruiser 2 Seat Wagon, matching numbers 350 automatic drivetrain, matching colors in terms of paint and interior, and original interior, dash, and carpet. It was optioned with power steering, power brakes, power windows, power seats, and air conditioning. Freshly tuned with wires, plugs, cap, etc. Also fully serviced, fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, radiator flushed, newer battery, and all fresh oils and greased. Just installed a brand new muffler, tailpipe, and all new clamps (see picture), completely stock, no glass packs. Newer period whitewall radial Michelin tires and original hubcaps. Interior is at least 90-95% original and well-cared for, no tears or rips, the carpet even appears to be original. Nice headliner. Overall, it is in good condition for its age to say the least. The car is well-documented with a full owner's manual set, service paperwork from the 1970s, emissions and insurance data from the last 30 years (owner in Maryland kept that documentation from the mid-1980s to 2014-2015), and even an appointment book from 1973 and a memo book from 1974, both presumably from the original owner (not sure though). Also includes original luggage rack and spoiler! All factory tinted windows, glass is all in good shape and all of the windows are working including the back tailgate window. Tailgate swings out one way, but it does not want to fold down. It does open completely though. Also, it has a heavy duty trailer hitch installed. For its age and spending most its life in Maryland, it does show some rust as you can see in the pictures in the undercarriage and lower rockers, doors, etc. Has been repainted once quite a while back in the original Bamboo color and is about a 10-footer (definitely driver quality). Chrome and trim in good shape for its age, complete, nothing missing. The woodgrain vinyl is probably original and is in good shape for its age, the tailgate piece is the worst, but excessive wear there is pretty typical for Vista Cruisers. Missing original radio, had an AM FM radio when it was new, but the owner who purchased it around the late 1970s had an aftermarket Realistic AM FM Cassette installed in 1979. We can provide that radio along with the manual for it. Dash is in great shape, no cracks or tears, not faded. The Cruiser was garaged most of its life. All in all, it is a running working project and a fantastic example of a rare 2-seat Vista Cruiser survivor from the last year. It's believed to be a two-owner, first owner had it until about 1977 (we have a Goodyear tire warranty from that time) and then it was purchased by a man in Maryland around 1978 and stayed in his collection until he passed away around 2015 (the last insurance card from Maryland was for 2014-2015). So it's had a lot of time in the garage. It runs well and is not a leaker or smoker. My Dad did a lot of general maintenance, detail-work, exhaust, etc. over the last 3 months. Title is clean, no liens, signed off by the estate representative. Below is a break-down of the VIN and Trim Tag along with the NADA book value and some additional pictures. This vehicle is over 43 years old and is being sold AS-IS with NO guarantees expressed or implied. We are not responsible for shipping, the buyer will need to make arrangements, we will help load. We are open for pick-up times due to my father being retired. Please feel free to contact us if you'd like to schedule an appointment to view the Cruiser in person. Also, if you have any questions, please ask them PRIOR to making an offer. The external information provided (i.e. the Vin Decoder, Trim Tag Decoder, Book Values, etc.) are not guaranteed and just provided here as a general reference. But at the end of the day, one thing is certain: it didn't take long for EVERYONE to join the party. And by 1970, the tried and true formula for Oldsmobile's storied 442 produced well-groomed street fighters like this incredible W30 hardtop. The subject of a 3-year, ground-up restoration, this razor-sharp Olds is a fully documented classic that wraps a numbers-matching drivetrain in all-original sheetmetal. If you're in the market for a first-class muscle car, it's time to stop debating and start calling! BODYWORK/TRIM A factory-correct car that reportedly hails from the dry climate of west Texas, this top notch A-Body features a solid, all-original profile that's covered in clean, Classic White 2-stage. That paint, and the traditional gold stripes that complement it, is a direct result of an extensive, 3-year restoration that wrapped up in the Spring of 2015. And today, five figures in to the future, this 442 is a timeless muscle car that intimidates like a cruise missile and shines like the family's best silver. Oldsmobile's modernist, mid-century design aesthetic was no doubt a play on its engineering leadership within the GM hierarchy, and the cars that proudly carry those lines continue to weather exceptionally well. At the front of this coupe, a 442-specific grille centers monochromatic "442" lettering between stainless-trimmed T3 headlights and a bright chrome bumper that's finished with clear parking lamps. At the top of that grille, a fiberglass ram air hood leads the eye to like-new glass that rides behind straight stainless frames. At the sides of that hood, traditional GM door handles and color-keyed sport mirrors perfectly complement clean marker lamps, dent-free wheel rings and a slick combination of "442" and "W-30" fender emblems. And at the back of the car, a "442" branded decklid hangs a factory wing above a second chrome bumper, silver-trimmed taillights and correct, trumpeted exhaust tips. ENGINE Hoist this Olds' scooped hood and you'll find an original, 455 cubic inch Rocket V8 that's branded with a correct 396021F casting number and matching partial VIN. Professionally rebuilt and fully detailed, that red hot mill is a reliable, big-port big block that, in factory form, twists stout 10.5 to 1 compression into a quick 370 horsepower! Stomp the throttle and a restored Rochester 4-barrel mixes juice from leak-free fuel lines with wind from a correct W-30 air cleaner, and shoves it in to a Winters aluminum intake. At the back of that intake, a traditional points distributor feeds fire through proven Packard TV R Suppression Cables, which snake around correct "F" heads and stamped and painted valve covers. Below those covers, freshly restored exhaust manifolds shoot charred dinosaurs in to big, true-dual pipes. Mechanically, the stout engine is all day reliable, spinning 500 lb./ft. of rock-crushing torque from one of the largest and most powerful valvetrains ever created. Aesthetically, familiar plastic fenders and Metallic Blue block skin look fantastic against the car's clean body. There's a roster of high quality ancillaries that includes factory air conditioning and a correct Delco Moraine brake booster. And the entire set up flat out rocks, from its fresh decals and pliable GM hoses to its color-keyed intake springs and Delco-topped battery. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION The bottom of this awesome 442 is completely solid, showing no signs of undue wear or question-inducing battle scars. The aforementioned Rocket fronts an original 3-speed, which hangs a correct "70 - OW" assembly tag opposite a matching partial VIN. That tough transmission sends power to a stout, 12-bolt axle. That driveline pushes a familiar Heavy Duty Suspension, which, along with the car's chassis, was thoroughly marked and tagged during the detailed restoration. Solid stops are provided by rebuilt front disc and rear drum brakes. Turns come courtesy of a familiar Saginaw gearbox, which is piped to factory power steering. At the center of the floors, aluminized exhaust pipes funnel spent gases through baritone turbo mufflers. And everything rolls on charcoal SSIIs, which spin 225/70R14 BF Goodrich Radial T/As around polished trim rings and rocket-branded center caps. INTERIOR This impressive coupe's correct, well-optioned interior is so fresh it looks like it just rolled out of the upholstery shop. At the center of the car, stainless-trimmed seats ride on fade-free carpet that's protected by "442 W-30" branded floor mats. At the sides of those seats, clean door panels center familiar GM armrests behind convenient power windows and optional power door locks. A wood-trimmed dash hangs deluxe telemetry above simple AC controls, optional audio equipment and a hidden button that actuates the car's sizeable trunk. At the base of that dash, a slim console frames a slim Hurst shifter. In front of the driver, a Sport Steering Wheel laps a tilting column. And behind the passengers, the aforementioned trunk anchors a fifth SSII and vintage Goodyear Polyglas between a small light, correct tools, bright decals and a fresh mat. HISTORICAL INFORMATION It's pretty easy to confirm this handsome Oldsmobile's status as an authentic 442. Here's a look at the car's 442-specific VIN and Cowl Tag. And today, when you're looking to grab a piece of Detroit's finest iron without closing out your retirement, a numbers-matching Oldsmobile is one of the smartest purchases on the market. There's no reason a blue chip classic should cost more than the mortgage on your house. And there's ABSOLUTELY no reason spending six figures of your hard earned money shouldn't get you a distinguished award winner like this incredible W-30. 1 of only 1,032 W-30 4-speed Holiday coupes built for the 1970 model year, this freshly restored Olds pairs an original, 455 cubic inch V8 with a tough Muncie 4-speed and correct Platinum on Black aesthetics. And if you're the kind of gearhead who likes to take their hardware to the show, it's the lust worthy trophy king you've been saving for! BODYWORK/TRIM Assembled in Lansing, Michigan during the fourth week of October, 1969, this awesome Oldsmobile is an impeccably maintained classic that still features all of its original sheetmetal. During an extensive, rotisserie restoration that was completed in the Spring of 2014, that solid profile was decked in correct Platinum base, trimmed with sinister stripes and sealed in glossy clear. And today, the car rolls as one razor-sharp coupe that mixes minimalist looks with a no-nonsense demeanor. Like all second generation A-bodies, the 442 continued to get better year after year. The car's clean, boxy lines were no doubt a play on its parent division's engineering leadership within the GM hierarchy, and the resulting design continues to weather exceptionally well. At the front of this coupe, a 442-specific grille centers monochromatic "442" lettering between stainless-trimmed T3 headlights and a bright chrome bumper that's finished with clear parking lamps. At the top of that grille, a fiberglass ram air hood leads the eye to a new windshield that, along with the car's all-original greenhouse, rides behind straight stainless trim. At the sides of that hood, traditional GM handles and color-keyed sport mirrors perfectly complement clean marker lamps, dent-free wheel rings and a slick combination of "442" and "W-30" fender emblems. And at the back of the car, a smooth decklid hangs more monochromatic "442" lettering above a second chrome bumper, silver-trimmed taillights and correct, trumpeted exhaust tips. ENGINE It's not immediately apparent why this Olds' body carries so much sizzle; that is, until you see what's under its hood. Twist the locks, fling the resin and you'll find 455 cubic inches of Rocket V8 that hangs a correct 396021F casting number over a matching partial VIN. Stomp the throttle and a restored Quadrajet 4-barrel mixes juice from leak-free fuel lines with wind from a correct W-30 air cleaner, and shoves it in to a high performance, aluminum intake. Mechanically, the stout mill is all day reliable, spinning 500 lb./ft. of rock-crushing torque from one of the largest and most powerful valvetrains ever created. Aesthetically, familiar plastic fenders and Metallic Blue block skin look fantastic against the car's Platinum body. There's a roster of high quality ancillaries that includes American Autowire wiring and a new 4-core Harrison radiator. And the entire set up flat out rocks, from its fresh decals and vivid firewall stamps to its tagged brake lines and color-keyed intake springs. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION The bottom of this awesome 442 is completely solid, showing no signs of undue wear or question-inducing battle scars. The aforementioned Rocket 455 fronts a correct close-ratio Muncie, which was professionally rebuilt in the fall of 2013. That proven transmission sends power to a stout 12-bolt, which employs moderate, highway-friendly gears. That smooth driveline hangs in a familiar heavy-duty suspension, which, along with the car's chassis, was thoroughly sandblasted and powder-coated during the rotisserie reboot. Solid stops are provided by rebuilt front disc and rear drum brakes. Turns come courtesy of an old school manual steering rack. At the center of the car, a correct Gardner exhaust system funnels spent gases through baritone turbo mufflers. And everything rolls on powder-coated steelies, which spin G70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sports around dog dish hubcaps. INTERIOR Inside this impressive coupe, you'll find a Black Legendary interior that's both comfortable and appealing. At the center of the car, stainless-trimmed seats ride on fresh carpet that's protected by Cutlass floor mats. At the sides of those seats, clean door panels center familiar GM armrests in bright chrome handles, straight stainless trim and fresh wood applique. A wood-trimmed dash hangs basic telemetry above an old school AM radio. At the base of that dash, a slim boot frames a broad Hurst shifter. In front of the driver, a Sport Steering Wheel laps a bright rocket emblem. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk anchors a fifth steel wheel and fifth Firestone tire between a small light, correct tools and a fresh mat. Engine / Driveline This is a numbers-matching 1969 Oldsmobile 4-4-2 Holiday Coupe. It has a 400 cubic inch V-8, Turbo Hydramatic 400 transmission, and a 10-bolt Posi-Traction rear end. The car was running and driving a little less than a year ago. As of right now, when hooked to a battery the engine will crank but it does not turn over. No fuel to carburetor. Still has original Rochester 4-barrel carburetor. Factory air conditioned car with original Frigidaire components still installed. Power steering and power brakes need to be redone. Drum brakes all the way around. New suspension is needed all the way around. Exhaust system including mufflers look like they’re original to the car. Interior Red cloth interior with front bucket seats and center console with floor shifter and rallye gauges. Aftermarket cassette deck in place of the original radio has been installed. Dashboard has minimal cracking for its age. Package tray below rear window is intact. Seats are intact but show their age. Original headliner is still in the car. Door panels are original but they are beyond repair. The entire interior is original, but it will all need to be redone. Windows roll up and down but will need alignment. The car will need a new front windshield, but the rest of the glass is usable. Gauges still light up. Has correct “442” emblem on glove compartment door. All seatbelts are still there. Odometer shows 155,255 miles. Body The exterior body of the car has rust in all of the typical A-body areas. It will need patch panels. Floor pans have some smaller rust areas but are repairable. Oldsmobile side marker lamps are still in place. Rear bumper is in good condition but will need to be re-chromed. Bottom edge of trunk lid has a little rust. Trunk lid emblems were missing when I bought the car but it comes with the original “442” fender emblems for both sides. Original jack instruction stickers are still on underside of trunk lid. Trunk interior is in overall good condition. Original jack and rear trailer hitch are still with the car. Gas cap is missing (I have taped it off). Car was in a light fender bender on the front passenger side many years ago under the previous owner. The very front passenger side of the frame is slightly warped and the bumper mounting point is bent backward a little. The affected area is shown in the pictures provided. However, this is very repairable and the affected area will only need to be slightly straightened if a frame-off restoration is done to the car. Front bumper has since been replaced and is very shiny and in good condition. Front passenger fender was replaced (by previous owner) with a fender off of a ’69 Cutlass. Hood is original and has been repaired with bondo. The hood is very straight and the original “442” emblems are still in place, but have some bubbling on driver side. The car will need new front passenger headlight bezel. Rearview mirrors are in good condition. Original antenna is in good condition. Paint is original, but needs to be redone. Wheels Car has Oldsmobile Rallye II wheels with snap-in center caps. 2 center caps are missing (passenger side). I believe these wheels are off of a 1972 model. According to my research, 1969 model year 4-4-2 cars should have the bolt-on center caps. New tires are needed. Documentation This car still has the original broadcast sheet, owner’s manual, plastic sleeve for the owner’s manual, manual for the original radio, and clear blue Texas Title. o VIN: 344879M37462 § 1st Digit: 3 (GM Division Oldsmobile) § 2nd-5th Digit: 4487 (4-4-2: 2-Door Holiday Coupe) § 6th Digit: 9 (Model Year 1969) § 7th Digit: M (Lansing, Michigan Assembly Plant) § Last 6 Digits: 37462 (Production Number) o Broadcast Sheet Codes: § M40: TH400 Automatic Transmission § PL5: Tires- Blackwall Wide, Oval Polyester Cord F70 x 14” § N66: Wheel, Rally Type (Super Stock II, 13”) § U63: Radio, Push Button Control § A02: Glass, Tinted Windshield (Tinted Upper) § C60: Air Conditioner, Manual Control § B32: Mat, Front Floor Throw § D55: Console, Compartment Floor (Var. 1) This 1969 4-4-2 is an EXCELLENT frame-off restoration candidate with lots of potential. It was purchased new in New Mexico and moved to West Texas a few years later where it spent most of its life. I purchased it about 6 months ago from the original family with the intention of restoring it, but I will be moving soon and will no longer have the space for the build so it’s time to find it a good home. Car is located in the Austin, Texas area. Car is being sold AS-IS, WHERE-IS. No returns. Shipping /pick-up is entirely the responsibility of the buyer. $500 PayPal deposit within 24-hours of sale, and remainder of balance via cash or cashier’s check within 5 days of sale. Big block Chevelles and aggressively styled GTOs seem to be naturals when it comes to muscle car wish lists. But, in reality, GM's 'more proper' divisions created some of the nastiest stoplight warriors ever unleashed on American streets. Oldsmobile, the General's humble technology division, definitely did its fair share to glorify the rise of Detroit. And this 5-time Olds Nationals champion is a prime example of their much lauded 'bar brawler in a tuxedo' sales mentality. Featuring a numbers-matching drivetrain, an intense Spanish Red on Black color combination and an impressive rotisserie restoration, this Olds is one of the coolest A-Bodies on the planet! And if you're looking for a solid, road-ready classic that'll turn heads and bring home trophies, it's your round-trip rocket ride to the moon! BODYWORK/TRIM Given its mid June build date, workers at GM's Lansing, Michigan production facility undoubtedly drifted to thoughts of summertime fun as this rich coupe rolled down their assembly line. With a striking combination of modernist appeal and open road prowess, it's virtually impossible to picture this classy Olds in anything other than a happy, sunny landscape. Not long ago the car benefitted from a detailed, rotisserie restoration, during which its original sheetmetal was stripped, patched and aligned to better-than-factory condition. A correct layer of Spanish Red base was sealed in modern clear and buffed to an admirable shine. And today, this sweet 442 is a razor-sharp muscle car that intimidates like a cruise missile and shines like the family's best silver. ENGINE Hoist the car's mirrored hood and you'll find a correct and equally rare 400 cubic inch Rocket V8, which is branded with a 442-specific 390925F casting number and "V224517G" assembly stamp. Since pre-68 Rocket blocks are devoid of VIN stamps, we can use that assembly code, which translates as 400 cubic inch (V) high compression (G) engine number 224517, to validate this coupe's status as a real-deal, numbers-matching 442. Professionally rebuilt and fully detailed, the hot V8 is a super-efficient wedge head design that utilizes a standard stroke and undersquare bore to create stout 10.5 to 1 compression, 350 horsepower and 440 lb./ft. of stump-pulling torque. Stomp the throttle and a big Rochester Quadrajet mixes juice from new stainless fuel lines with wind that's supplied by a chrome, correctly decaled air cleaner. At the sides of that carb, correct "C" branded heads hang above correct, cast iron exhaust manifolds, which make quick work of spent gases. And at the back of those heads, a correct red cap distributor sequences spark between high quality Packard TV R Suppression Cables and a rare UHV ignition system. Aesthetically, this Oldsmobile's Satin Black fenders and correct Bronze block look fantastic against their vivid red shell. And the entire engine bay, from its pliable hoses and Delco master cylinder to its correct alternator and tagged Delco battery, features a clean, factory-spec appearance. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION The bottom of this awesome 442 is completely solid, showing no signs of undue wear or question-inducing battle scars. The aforementioned Rocket 400 fronts a rugged 4-speed that's branded with a correct 3885010 casting number and Muncie (P) assembled on February (B) 7th (07) 1967 (7) build stamp. That proven transmission sends power to a stout 10-bolt that's equipped with moderate, 3.42 gears. That driveline hangs in a tagged heavy-duty suspension, which includes better shocks, thicker coil springs, reinforced control arms and a mandatory rear sway bar. Power-assisted discs and drums provide braking, while turns come courtesy of factory power steering. At the center of the car, aluminized pipes funnel spent gases through buff DynoMax mufflers and chrome-trimmed exhaust tips. And Styled Steel wheels spin F70-14 Firestone Wide Oval Super Sport redlines around rocket-branded center caps. INTERIOR Inside this impressive Olds, you'll find a correct Black interior that's both comfortable and appealing. At the center of the car, stainless-trimmed seats ride on fresh black carpet that's protected by "OLDSMOBILE" branded floor mats. At the sides of those seats, clean door panels center modernist armrests in bright chrome handles and straight stainless trim. A warp-free dash hangs an old school pushbutton radio beside restored factory telemetry. At the base of that dash, an optional console frames a stylish Hurst 442 shifter. In front of the driver, a chrome-trimmed steering wheel laps a tilting column. And behind the passengers, a fully restored trunk anchors a fifth Styled Steel wheel and fifth redline tire between clean decals, a correct jack and a fresh mat. AWARDS If you've made it this far, you know this Oldsmobile is really something special. And, apparently the show scene seems to agree. Here's a list of the car's major accolades.First Place at the 2009 Oldsmobile Club of America Olds Nationals (995 out of 1000 points)First Place at the 2010 Oldsmobile Club of America Olds Nationals (995 out of 1000 points)First Place at the 2012 Oldsmobile Club of America Olds Nationals (1000 out of 1000 points)First Place at the 2013 Oldsmobile Club of America Olds Nationals (1000 out of 1000 points)First Place at the 2014 Oldsmobile Club of America Olds Nationals (998 out of 1000 points)Awarded an Antique Automobile Club of America Senior National First Prize (2013) HISTORICAL INFORMATION Given its history of awards, there's no doubting the quality of this impressive 442's restoration. This is exactly why we created the RKM Performance Center. Being proud members of SEMA, ARMO, HRIA and the North Carolina Motorsports Association, the RKM Performance Center is a nationally recognized shop; best known for high level OEM restorations and custom builds. Considering this is a numbers-matching, and HD manual transmission muscle car that's fresh off a restoration, it might not even last long enough in our showroom for you to read this whole description. There are very few designs from this era that could say both "sporty" and "luxury" so well. This convertible has all the great dramatic curves, flared fenders, and a handsome front end that was instantly recognizable as being from GM's rocket division. This car is coated in its factory-correct code 52 Crimson paint with matching rally wheels. Of course the spectacular shine on the super-straight body is thanks to a thorough re-spray that was performed less than a year ago. This is a true 442 ragtop, so all the chrome and badging are in the right places to take home the car show trophies. No off-white interior could possibly look this good without some serious money invested in a restoration. But beyond the pristine door panels, carpets, heat/defrost controls, and dashboard, this convertible has a serious desirability factor in its features. It's a bucket seat car, with a center console and floor-mounted stick shift. This one even has the cool factory tic-toc-tac. But since this is a luxury vehicle too, there are some great features like the original AM/FM radio, tilt steering wheel, and the power folding soft top. Under the hood is exactly what you want to see. It's a numbers-matching 400 cubic-inch V8 with only 200 miles on its fresh rebuild. The engine bay is tidy and was restored to look like the day it left the Lansing, Michigan factory over 45 years ago. It has a refreshing look that avoids superfluous or unnecessary add-ons to get in the way of people seeing that golden block. On top of that is the Rochester four-barrel carburetor, and the power makes a great rumble as it exits out of the dual exhaust (Yup...400 cubic inches, four-barrel carburetor, and dual exhaust the namesake of the 1969 Oldsmobile 4-4-2.) But if that isn't enough to get your heart racing, one rare feature will. This ragtop comes with the optional three-speed Dearborn HD manual transmission for perfect power control, and an interesting feature to show your friends. As usual with an Oldsmobile, no matter how much power it's putting down, it still has all-day usability. This comes from features such as power steering, front disc brakes, and the Positraction rear end. This is a great classic 442 with the title documentation, restoration receipts, and restoration photos to prove its pedigree. It has all the right looks and features that we know it won't last long in our showroom. Oldsmobile History for 1961 Cars GM lines in 1961, for the most part, exemplified the new, cleaner, lower, longer, wider look that was just coming into fashion. Simple, twin, round combination tail/stop/directional lights enhanced the rocketlike styling as did the tapered rear fender styling. The flamboyant fins of the fifties were all but gone from GM’s lineup, except Cadillac which would hold onto them for just a few more years. The very first Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight appeared for model year 1941. The series name would continue to signify the top-of-the-line, flagship model for the next fifty-eight years, the last issues being built for the 1999 model year. Super 88s may have been ‘super’ but the Ninety-Eight was always the creme de la creme of the Oldsmobile fleet. Typically riding a longer wheelbase with an appropriately greater overall length, the Ninety-Eight had a more powerful engine than the base level Eighty-Eight and as one might expect, a host of appearance and convenience features that were optional, at extra cost, on Eighty-Eight and Super 88 models. The privileged few (roughly one in six full size Oldsmobiles for 1961 were Ninety-Eight models) paid at least $4,072 for the opportunity– an additional $1,000.00 or thirty-three percent up-charge for the prestige of Ninety-Eight ownership. That was quite a hefty premium considering that the base price of a base model Eight-Eight was only $2,956.00 at the time. All full size Oldsmobiles for 1961 shared the same 6.46 liter (that’s 394 cubic inches) cast iron, V-8 engine 325 horsepower Rocket V-8 one of a continuing series of ‘Rocket V-8s’ designed by Charles Kettering, father of the ‘modern day, high compression V-8 engine. His designs included a number of interesting features including overhead valves, hydraulic lifters, oversquare bore-stroke ratio, forged crank with counterweights, aluminum pistons, full-floating wrist-pins, and a dual plane intake manifold. The 1961 engine was badged the ‘Skyrocket’ V-8. Consumers of top-of-the-line models, like the Olds Ninety-Eight, expected creature comfort, performance and convenience amenities, typically optional at extra cost on lesser models, to be included as standard equipment on their ‘highline’ models. Offered in five body styles including three 4-door models, a 2-door convertible and the coupe shown above... the ‘Classic’ Ninety-Eight for Sixty-One, didn’t let them down. Interiors were upholstered in a choice of luxurious fabrics, vinyl and/or sumptuous leathers. In addition to a multitude of features listed as standard fare on the base model Eighty-Eight and step-up Super Eighty-Eight models, the Ninety Eight included windshield washer; electric clock; Jetaway Hydra-Matic transmission; power steering and power brakes.... Popular upscale options included the Super Deluxe Signal Seeking AM radio ($124.00); power antenna ($23.00); power windows ($106.00) Other incredibly mundane options included a heater and defroster; back up lamps ($9.00); courtesy lamps ($5.00) and anti-spin differential for $45.00. During the 1961 model run, Oldsmobiles were produced in one of SEVEN American cities, Michigan (the home of Oldsmobile); Kansas City, Missouri; Atlanta, Georgia; Linden, New Jersey; Los Angeles, California; Arlington, Texas and Wilmington, Delaware. Sadly, after a century plus seven years, the final Oldsmobile, a 2004 Alero GLS four door sedan, rolled off the assembly line of the Lansing, Michigan plant, just after 9:00 AM on April 29, 2004. Quite superior to the rest of the Oldsmobile line up the 98 was the top of the line model and equipped with all power options standard. This vehicle had underwent a full frame off restoration in the late 90’s and has been well cared for since. The car is in excellent running condition all power options work as they should and represents a very presentable example. Having some aged since its restoration, the car has been driven and shows some signs of road use with a few nicks and chips but nothing major. The interior is nice, seats are like new as is the top. The vehicle is finished in its original colors of Provincial White with a Garnet Metallic trim line. The interior is the code 385 red, the top is Garnet. Original drivetrain is in excellent condition it is equipped with a 394/325hp high compression engine at 10.1, all its power a luxury equipment includes Power Steering and Brakes, Power Top and Power Seat, wonder bar radio and power antenna. The vehicle is an exceptional driver in good condition it could benefit from some minor refreshing to its rubber trim pieces and carpet over all it is fabulous car to own and enjoy.
