Nearly every major car club has a survivor category, and the prices of credible survivors continue to climb. That's an understandable trend, considering anyone can restore a car but the factory only bolts it together once. This 34,682-mile Dodge is a mostly-original survivor in the best of ways. Not only is it an ultra-clean, unrestored example of one of the coolest pony cars to ever leave Detroit, it's 1 of only 733 1970 Challenger R/T SE hardtops fitted with Chrysler's legendary 440/3-speed drivetrain. A highly authentic, numbers-matching car that's packed with many desirable options, it's 1 of 50 440/3-speed Challenger R/T SE hardtops listed in Galen's Registry. And, whether you're looking for a unique MoPar to bolster your collection or just want a fun cruiser to enjoy on sunny summer weekends, it's your documented ticket to a glorious, octane-fueled past! BODYWORK/TRIM Wearing lines that originated on Chrysler designer Carl Cameron's famous Charger Turbine Concept, this classic makes a distinct styling statement from virtually every angle. Born in Los Angeles, California, the car has been exceptionally maintained by fastidious owners for close to 46 years. Its mostly original sheetmetal, a characteristical profile that's been supplemented with a new passenger's fender, reflects vivid Sublime single-stage that easily glorifies Chrysler's Hi Impact Pigment marketing. A black hood stripe, white side stripes and a tight vinyl roof highlight original brightwork. And, as far as we can tell, this coupe has never been fully disassembled, with the aforementioned owners choosing to wear the car's weathering as a badge of honor. ENGINE Lift this Dodge's broad hood and you'll find an original, 440 cubic inch RB V8 that follows a correct 2536480 casting number and October 27th of 1969 casting date with a matching partial VIN. More popular than Chrysler's famed Hemi, Dodge's stalwart 440 Magnum was designed to be the industry's best combination of comfort, streetability and big block performance. Oxygen whips from a dressed and decaled air cleaner to a big Carter carburetor, which rides on a factory-spec intake. At the front of that intake, a familiar points distributor sequences spark between an Echlin voltage regulator and pliable Mopar Suppression Cables. At the sides of those cables, Hemi Orange valve covers perfectly contrast old school exhaust manifolds. Cooling comes courtesy of a Chrysler-branded radiator, which rides in front of Mopar-branded hoses and simple squeeze clamps. And a stalwart MoPar red cap kicks everything in to motion. Aesthetically, the bright engine bay presents as expected, from its correct markings and Hi Impact fenders all the way to its old school fluid reservoir and Satin Black brake booster. And details like factory air conditioning are present and accounted for. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION By 1970, most street racers knew that an automatic transmission wasn't necessarily a performance handicap. And today, these proven gearboxes consistently pull down numbers that are just as fast, or faster, than the best row-it-yourself strip warriors. Behind this Challenger's big V8 you'll find an original A727 TorqueFlite that hangs a matching partial VIN opposite a correct assembly stamp. Naturally, that high performance drivetrain feeds a proven 8.75-inch rear end. That rear end rolls on a factory-spec suspension that's fitted with lucid power steering. Exhaust travels through fresh, 2.5-inch pipes that employ factory replacement mufflers and rear-mounted resonators. Power-assisted disc and drum brakes provide the kind of quick and reliable stops that perfectly counter traditional, 15-inch Rallye wheels and requisite F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GTs. And items like a new fuel tank and fresh shocks keep the car safe and road-ready. INTERIOR Grab a seat in this awesome Challenger and you'll find a correct Black interior that's detailed with tasteful wood accents and bright stainless trim. The first thing you'll notice is the car's high quality bucket seats, which feature comfortable pleats on top of straight frames and firm foam. The second thing you'll notice is fade-free carpet, which is protected by cool "Challenger R/T" branded floor mats. And the third thing you'll notice is a correct console, which wraps a short slap stick shifter in what seems like a mile of wood applique. At the sides of the car, full door panels hang chrome handles and cool lock tabs in front of factory power windows. At the front of the car, stylish wood applique frames clean instrumentation and a correct Chrysler Solid State 8-track player. In front of the driver, a Rim Blow steering wheel mixes good form with great function. At the back of the car, a roomy trunk sandwiches a correct jack and space saver spare between a vintage decal and correct mat. And desirable factory options, like a rear speaker, a rear defroster and 3-speed windshield wipers, are sprinkled throughout. OUR SALE INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING DOCUMENTATION AND ACCESSORIESA Galen Govier Visual Inspection (conducted in 2012)Galen's Registry paperworkA large display boardA small trophyA few spare, believed to be original, parts While this Dodge might not be the rarest MoPar ever produced, time has greatly increased its exclusivity. BODY Upon meeting this low mileage Dodge, the first thing you'll notice is a premium combination of red and silver aesthetics that put a modern twist on the trusted 'bright paint and two war stripes' color scheme. Get to know the car a little better and you'll find solid, original sheetmetal that fits precisely. A close examination of that sheetmetal, which began life at Chrysler's excellent Brampton, Canada manufacturing facility, reveals no major issues or tendencies. And overall, in part thanks to tasteful SRT upgrades, this super slick MoPar walks a fine line between legendary Motor City class and modern, user-friendly performance. ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN The heart of this Challenger is a 392 cubic inch SRT Hemi that utilizes a revised block, aluminum heads and sequential multi-port fuel injection to twist stout 10.9 to 1 compression into 470 horsepower and 470 lb./ft. of torque. That brutal block commands six forward gears through a proven Tremec TR6060 manual transmission. That transmission twists a fresh limited-slip differential, which is equipped with buff 3.92 gears. There's an SRT-tuned suspension that's augmented by standard stability and traction control. Variable-ratio, speed-assisted power steering helps the car feel nimble, despite its size. Braking comes courtesy of Brembo 4-piston calipers that, with the help of standard anti-lock software, clamp 14-inch slotted rotors. Spent gases exit through factory pipes, which are capped with polished tips. And at the corners, "SRT" branded blades spin 245/45ZR20 Goodyear Eagle F1s in front of 255/45ZR20 Goodyear Eagle F1s. INTERIOR While this Challenger's exterior is successfully reminiscent of classic Detroit steel, it's interior is a tangible illustration of just how much things have changed in almost half a century. At the center of the car, heated, power-adjustable seats feature tight leather hides that are trimmed with red accent stripes, white accent stitching and clean "SRT" logos. In front of those seats, a driver-oriented dash hangs sporty telemetry beside automatic climate control. Between those ancillaries, factory Uconnect mixes CD, DVD, Satellite and MP3 infotainment with a 40 GB hard drive, Bluetooth connectivity and six Boston Acoustics speakers. Below that system, a wide console balances an attractive shifter between premium floor mats, like-new carpet and metal-trimmed foot pedals. At the sides of that carpet, chrome-trimmed door panels hang padded armrests in front of smooth power mirrors, requisite power windows and standard power door locks. In front of the driver, a heated and leather-wrapped SRT steering wheel features factory cruise control and redundant audio buttons. And naturally, all the luxuries you'd expect in a high dollar muscle car are present and accounted for including: Keyless Go, Remote Keyless Entry, Universal Home Remote and a standard security alarm. HISTORICAL INFORMATION Nicely appointed from the factory, this clean coupe rolled in to Crossroads Dodge of Prince George, Virginia with a long list of standard and optional equipment. New 20 x 9-inch, five-spoke cast-aluminum wheels with black painted pockets provide a unique performance look. Inside, the standard leather seats feature an exclusive Stinger Yellow accent band with embroidered Yellow Jacket logo and silver accent stitching. The driver's seat also features a full adjustable lumbar position with seatback tilt, memory and an easy-to-reach release handle, while the front-passenger seat adds tilt and slide with memory, which makes it even easier for passengers to get in and out of the back seat. "The Challenger SRT8 392 Yellow Jacket adds another piece of performance car nostalgia to our rear-drive muscle coupe lineup in 2012," said Ralph Gilles, President and CEO SRT Brand and Motorsports. "The Stinger Yellow paint and interior accents speak directly to the performance enthusiast who appreciates a memorable and collectible color that helps deliver even more excitement and exclusivity." The original Dodge "Yellow Jacket" show car, which evolved from the 1970 Challenger, was shown at various auto show exhibits beginning in late 1969. Painted pearlescent Honey Gold, the roadster was powered by the 426-cubic inch HEMI V-8 and carried a number of the famous Dodge "Scat Pack" performance features, such as a unique front spoiler, wider tires, heavy-duty suspension and brakes, and manual transmission, along with the Rallye instrument cluster and shaker hood. A limited number of 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 Yellow Jacket models will be built for the U.S. market. All Dodge Challenger models are built at the Brampton Assembly Plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. The Challenger SRT8 392 Yellow Jacket will be available for ordering in December at Dodge dealerships nationwide and will be arriving in U.S. dealer showrooms in the first quarter of 2012. About the 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392For 2012, the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 adds even more high-tech performance features to solidify its place as the brand's ultimate modern American rear-wheel-drive muscle coupe. With 470 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque from the proven 392 cubic-inch HEMI V-8, the balanced performance approach of the Challenger SRT8 392 provides outstanding straight-line acceleration, world-class ride and handling, high-performance braking and the most up-to-date technologies that deliver more driver excitement and control. The standard Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual transmission and a dual-disc high-performance clutch are proven performers that were first offered on the 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10. Both automatic and manual models feature a standard limited-slip differential to maximize performance. The optional five-speed automatic transmission features new, standard steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters that join the center console mounted Auto Stick, allowing for a choice of spirited shifting on both the road and the race track. Both methods give the driver the ability to manually select specific gears on the transmission. Standard Fuel Saver Technology (four-cylinder mode) in automatic transmission equipped models allows the engine to operate economically on four cylinders or use the power of all eight cylinders when needed. The EPA fuel economy miles per gallon (mpg) (City/Hwy) ratings for the 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 are 14/23 for both manual and automatic transmission models. The adaptive damping suspension (ADS) system is new for 2012 and tuned specifically for the Dodge Challenger SRT8 392. The ADS system on the Challenger SRT8 392 features the fastest turn-in and most nimble handling characteristics of any SRT product. In the "Sport" setting, the system provides the highest damping rates allowing the driver to push the handling envelope like never before. In "Auto" mode, a wide range of on-road and driver inputs such as vehicle speed, steering angle, steering speed, brake torque, throttle position and lateral/vertical accelerations automatically tune the suspension for specific conditions. Drivers can easily choose between settings to quickly change the shock damping and harshness characteristics from "Auto" for everyday commuting to "Sport" for more spirited driving situations. The handling result is .90g capability on the skid pad the most of any production Challenger and on par with some of the world's best-handling performance coupes. The standard SRT performance brake package produces world-class stopping power of 60 to 0 mph in just 117 feet from 14.2 inch (front) and 13.8 inch (rear) vented/slotted rotors with four-piston Brembo fixed calipers painted red. The three-mode electronic stability control system with knockback mitigation also includes four-wheel ABS, all-speed traction control, electronic brake-force distribution, Brake Assist and Hill-start Assist (HSA). The 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 accelerates from 0-60 mph in the high 4-second range; runs the quarter mile in mid-12-second range with the automatic transmission (high 12-second range with the manual); goes from 0-100-0 mph in the low 15s, reaches a top speed of 182 mph with the manual transmission (175 mph with the automatic). The large front splitter and integrated front fender spats and body-color rear decklid spoiler provide stable high-speed aerodynamic balance while the front fascia chin spoiler also improves aerodynamic drag and is accented in black for a more aggressive look. Unique "392 HEMI" badges flank both fenders touting the historically significant V-8 engine that remains true to its high-performance roots and powers the highest rated Challenger in terms of horsepower and torque ratings. From the rear, the 4-inch rectangular exhaust tips deliver the 392's performance exhaust note while adding the styling cue of a serious muscle car. The race inspired and high-performance interior begins with the new, exclusive SRT heated steering wheel that features mounted paddle shifters for hands on the wheel shifting both on road and at the race track. All audio and Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) controls are accessible from the horizontal spokes on the steering wheel. The trapezoidal instrument panel features a four-bomb gauge cluster with chromed accent rings and unique SRT graphics. Inside the cluster, the SRT-exclusive Electronic Vehicle Information Center (EVIC) with performance pages gives the driver trip information, multimedia information from the Media Center radio, along with instant feedback on 0-60 mph acceleration, 60-0 mph braking, G-forces, one-eighth mile and quarter-mile times. The 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8 392 features more than 35 advanced safety and security features, including standard Keyless Enter-N-Go and three-mode electronic stability control (ESC) with segment-exclusive Ready Alert Braking and Rain Brake Support safety features to improve overall vehicle handling and performance. For maximum convenience and to keep passengers connected, a wide array of connectivity, infotainment and mobile multimedia options are available on the 2012 Dodge Challenger SRT8. New for 2012, the Dodge Challenger SRT8 features an available 900-watt, 18-speaker premium SRT performance audio surround-sound system from Harman Kardon. This 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T, for example, looks exceptionally sinister with its dark colors inside and out. Plus, it has a seriously upgraded V8 that gives it the power to back up its appearance. You know this car is going to be cool when it wears a hue called Ferrari Gray (originally coded TX9 black, this rare and true triple-black car could be a concours quality restoration candidate.) The new color was applied during recent high quality restoration. Once you look at all the details from the doorjambs to inside the trunk, you'll be will convinced that this car has not only lived a good life, but that someone spent plenty of money keeping this Mopar looking great. It was originally a 318 car, and all the sheetmetal was the same, so when the engine was upgraded, so were the visuals. This includes the scooped hood with hood pins, a complete set of black R/T stripes, chin spoiler, rear spoiler, and the unmistakable red R/T emblems that give this car a slight pop of bright red like it was out for blood. Adding to this aggressive attitude is the fact that 1970 was the year for the split grille and split taillights. It made these coupes look so beefy that you'd swear they owned the whole road. Chrysler's black bucket seat interior gets high marks for both style and comfort, and even today this is a great place to spend some quality time. It looks so clean and pristine that we suspect this got plenty of attention during the restoration. This is a muscle car with all-day cruiser kind of potential, so an AM/FM/CD player was installed for modern tunes. But really we know the sound you will always want to hear is the rumble out of the dual exhaust. One peek under the hood, and you know this is an amazing performer. This is a 360 cubic-inch motor that was bored and stroked to go into big block territory. It now displaces 408 ci, but the upgrade did not end there. The motor is running Keith Black pistons, hydraulic roller lifters, and 1.6 roller rockers by Comp Cams. Plus the 340 X heads were refurbished with larger valves less than 300 miles ago. The fuel gets to the motor via Holley 750 Double Pumper carburetor that feeds the Edelbrock RPM intake. Sounds like a lot of power, right? That's why it's mated to a TCI Torqueflite 727 three-speed automatic transmission. Truly, this is a sweet muscle car right down to its welded subframe and classic Rallye wheels. You can choose to show off this coupe as the amazingly restored Mopar this is (and we have the receipts and title documentation to prove it!) But there's also that prideful knowledge of owing an original triple-black car. There are a lot of great things about this Challenger, but hurry up because you were not the only one to notice. That's because, as dedicated gearheads who sweat 30 weight motor oil, we strive to deliver the world's finest investment grade metal AND first class muscle cars that literally define the term "pro-tourer". Take, for example, this wicked 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T. As the beneficiary of a nut and bolt rotisserie restoration that included a modern 6.1 liter Hemi, a complete XV suspension and a modified leather interior, it's an exceptionally well done piece that'll more than hold its own against any pampered show queen. And, although it doesn't have coveted documentation or a stack of plastic trophies, it does have a cover feature and an accompanying 6-page spread in Mopar Action magazine. If you're looking for some old school Detroit metal that wraps some of the nastiest muscle your money can buy in one of the best looking packages to ever prowl American streets, this awesome Challenger is just your style! This cool E-Body's complete rotisserie restoration began when its solid convertible body was meticulously stripped, carefully massaged and thoroughly sanded into a smooth, consistent canvas. Once that canvas was prepped, a bright coat of Viper Red urethane was expertly sealed in a thick clearcoat shell. And when that clearcoat cured, it was decked in black war paint and buffed to a thoroughly substantial presence. Take one look down the body of this old-school Dodge and you'll see tough, slab-sided panels that have been straightened and finessed far past anything that rolled out of the factory. Pull the car into the sunlight and its glossy glow accurately reproduces Chrysler's planar, straight lines all the while offering a level of protection that can only be achieved with today's advanced paint technology. Get up close and personal with its finish and all that staring and comparing adds up to one super slick, all-American muscle car which wraps brutal performance in killer good looks! Wearing lines that originated on Chrysler designer Carl Cameron's famous Charger turbine concept, this classic Challenger makes a bold and distinctly Mopar styling statement from virtually every angle. At the front of the car, a tough looking body-width grille hangs a red "R/T" emblem between four pristine headlights, fade-free parking lamps and a mirror-like bumper. At the top of the car, an R/T-specific hood props two small scoops, two pristine "6.1 HEMI" emblems and two trick tie downs in front of like-new glass that's framed by straight stainless trim and a black vinyl top. At the sides of the car, prominent fender lines are complemented by flush-fitting door handles, body-matched sport mirrors, chrome-trimmed marker lights and a quick-fill fuel cap. And at the back of the car, a body-matched valence hangs wide "DODGE" branded tail lights above a second pristine bumper and correct quad exhaust tips. Raise the wide red hood and you'll find a killer 6.1 liter Mopar crate engine that takes this Dodge from 'very appealing' to 'MUST HAVE' almost as fast as it takes its driver from 'confident' to 'scared stiff'. Measuring in at roughly 370 cubic inches, Chrysler's resurrected Hemi uses a revised block, a forged crank, lighter pistons, strengthened connecting rods, new oil jets, variable cam timing and increased flow heads to turn impressive 10.3 to 1 compression into 425 horsepower! At the top of that stout block, a decaled Spectre air cleaner captures wind using two gorgeous tubes that took 50 hours of modification by the pros at JJV Customs in Wilmington, Delaware. That air flows through an XV intake and mixes with fossils supplied by high performance AEM fuel management. That air/fuel mixture explodes in a super clean block that's adorned with traditional "6.1 HEMI" branded rail covers. Remnants of that explosion are forced into XV-supplied long-tube headers that are bolted to a three inch stainless exhaust system. And cooling for that cycle is provided by a positively giant aluminum radiator that's equipped with two electric puller fans and a bright "Challenger R/T" script. Visually, the body-matched bay comes together every bit as well as the outside of the car, with its smoothed firewall and bright red fenders providing a perfect frame for the modern Chrysler V8. Speaking of that V8, its installation is exceptionally well done and certainly looks tidy enough to pass as an OEM package. And, in addition to roughly 475 horsepower, the big mill features a host of first class ancillary components including black cross bracing, braided hoses and a small JJV Customs badge. Take one look under this beefed up E-Body and you'll see that it definitely has the chops to back up its sinister good looks. The smooth-revving engine is hooked to a slick-shifting Tremec TKO 600 5-speed, a custom driveshaft and a familiar Sure Grip rear end that's equipped with 3.55 gears and stout Yukon axles. Not surprisingly, the car's old-school front torsion bar and rear leaf spring suspension has been completely replaced by a beefy XV Level II set up. Naturally, that pavement-ripping suspension is augmented by power rack and pinion steering and a first class XV power brake system that pinches 14 inch slotted rotors via 6-piston calipers and 13 inch slotted rotors via 4-piston calipers. An intimidating engine note comes courtesy of a three inch stainless exhaust system that sends spent gases through an H-pipe crossover to wicked Magnaflow mufflers and pristine stainless tips. And power flows to the ground through a sweet set of custom Budnik wheels which spin 275/35ZR18 BF Goodrich G-Force T/As in front of 295/35ZR18 BF Goodrich G-Force T/As. The car's fully restored floors, which have been thoroughly undercoated, are sprayed in the same Viper Red urethane as its glossy exterior panels and clean inner fenders. And everything from this Challenger's fresh stainless fuel tank to its heavy duty oil pan is fully sorted and ready to hit the curves. Open this Dodge's super straight doors and sit down inside a cockpit where the timeless good looks of American muscle meld seamlessly with tasteful upgrades and modern conveniences. The XV-supplied seats, which were bolted in by Newcastle Auto Upholstery of Newport, Delaware, are firm and feel much more upscale than traditional Mopar hardware. At the bottom of those seats, fresh black carpet anchors a tilt-screen JVC stereo and a TKO pistol grip shifter inside a custom console and color-keyed Challenger floor mats. At the sides of that carpet, leather-wrapped door panels hang familiar silver trim, traditional chrome hardware and great sounding Kenwood speakers in front of modern power windows. At the edges of those panels, a modified dash hangs a full assortment of XV gauges above controls for a Vintage Air climate system and small billet accessory knobs. In front of the driver, an old school Tuff Wheel spins around a modern tilt steering column. And behind the cockpit, a black convertible cowl snaps tight over a custom upholstered trunk. The sale of this super cool drop-top includes three CDs of build photos and a copy of the car's 6-page spread in the August, 2012 edition of Mopar Action. With a tenacious V8, a modern 5-speed transmission and a slick red on black color combination, this super cool Mopar pro-tourer combines explosive horsepower with modern driving characteristics and classic appeal. It's fast. It's tons of fun. And best of all, you're hard-earned money is buying a car that can actually do more than sit in a field and attract presumptuous experts. If you're in the market for some stunning Detroit metal that has the bare-knuckle muscle to back up its killer good looks, this Challenger is your next car! Not only did the 21st century see the return of the brash Charger and top dog Challenger, it also spawned a new generation of MoPar performance dubbed Street & Racing Technology. But even with countless special editions, and Chrysler's varying degrees of Hemi-fueled fury, SRT owners are pretty much used to the fact that someone else is going to show up with virtually the same wheels. Hey, it's not a bad thing that MoPars are so popular. But, then again, part of the appeal of having a special car is the guarantee of it actually being special. Enter this virtually new Challenger convertible. This surly coupe takes all the torque-rich goodness of Dodge's preeminent pavement pounder and throws in an unmatched top-down driving experience courtesy of Drop Top Customs of High Springs, Florida. And, if you're looking to pick up a modern, hassle-free hot rod that's loaded with tons of cool technology, it's your nouveau classic! BODYWORK/TRIM Beginning life at Chrysler's excellent Brampton manufacturing facility, this Challenger rolled through Florida's Wells Motor Company en route to residence with its one and only owner. That owner, when not enjoying the car during a rare weekend outing, stored his muse under full cover in a climate-controlled garage. And the result of that meticulous care is one super slick MoPar that conveys a substantial sense of style. Pull the car under the lights and you'll find wet looking Redline 3-Coat Pearl that's been dressed in black racing stripes. Below that lust worthy canvas, original sheetmetal fits precisely, displaying excellent build quality. And a close look down the sides of that slab-sided fuselage reveals not so much as a dent or ding anywhere. Challengers have never been safe havens for the meek. And they're almost morally offensive to folks who like their cars as bland as rice cakes. So, as if to bully critics into submission, Ma MoPar built this coupe to just south of audacious using a full array of gnarly aesthetics. At the front of the car, a simple grille hangs racy "CHALLENGER SRT" lettering between retro headlights, small fog lamps and a Trans Am-style chin spoiler. At the edges of that grille, a tall profile founds sporty "392 HEMI" emblems between a chrome fuel filler, color-keyed mirrors, body-matched door handles and Satin Black rocker panels. At the top of that profile, a sculpted hood flows to lightly tinted glass and the aforementioned power convertible top. And behind that top, a modified spoiler frames a Satin Black valance, body-width taillights and a black-trimmed bumper. ENGINE As we all know, Chrysler's Hemi has never been defined by white noise and empty promises. Straight from the factory the company's stalwart 5.7 liter makes an impressive 370 horsepower, and with the help of SRT, its performance goes from wild to insane! Measuring roughly 392 cubic inches, this Charger's upsized mill utilizes a revised block, aluminum heads and sequential multi-port fuel injection to twist stout 10.9 to 1 compression into 470 horsepower and 470 lb./ft. of torque. Visually, the car's engine compartment comes together just as well as its muscular exterior. Chrysler's install is exceptionally clean; forgoing the current 'plastic dome of doom' engine cover trend in favor of "392 HEMI" branded rail shrouds that resemble tall valve covers. The big block is coated in a nice shade of traditional orange paint, which perfectly complements red inner fenders. A K&N intake combines with Chrysler Fuel Saver technology to mix excellent performance with thrifty cruising. And, best of all, this is a Hemi that'll fire up in any weather, drive thousands of miles before anyone needs to turn its bolts, and probably lay waste to any old school muscle car that's brave enough to make a charge. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Straight from Auburn Hills, Chrysler's LX platform was a solid foundation that could easily spawn multiple rear and all-wheel drive applications. And when this Challenger's engineering team bolted up a Mercedes S-Class front suspension, threw in a Mercedes E-Class rear suspension and re-christened it "LC", they created the perfect blend of American attitude and European road manners. The brutal Hemi commands five gears through a tough Mercedes 5G-TRONIC transmission. That transmission twists a fresh anti-spin differential, which is equipped with buff 3.92 gears. There's an SRT-tuned chassis, supplemented with additional bracing when the car's top was chopped, that's equipped with standard stability and traction control. Variable-ratio, speed-assisted power steering ensures you'll want to do more than make traditional NASCAR lefts. Braking is handled by red Brembo calipers that, with the help of standard anti-lock software, clamp 14-inch, slotted rotors. Exhaust exits through a throaty Flowmaster muffler. And at the corners, forged SRT wheels spin 245/45ZR20 Goodyear Eagle F1s in front of 255/45ZR20 Goodyear Eagle F1s. INTERIOR Take a look inside this Dodge and you'll find a comfortable and stylish cockpit that's ready for long road trips and plenty of summertime fun. At the center of the car, heated, power-adjustable seats feature tight leather surfaces that are trimmed with red accent stripes, white accent stitching and clean "SRT" logos. In front of those seats, a driver-oriented dash seals highly detailed telemetry behind chrome trim rings, automatic temperature climate control and a small Drop Top Customs plaque. At the center of that dash, an MP3-compatible, Bluetooth-capable stereo makes excellent use of a Kicker amp, a Kicker sub and 13 Kicker speakers. Below that infotainment system, a wide console frames an attractive Mopar shifter. Beneath that console, like-new carpet anchors "CHALLENGER" branded floor mats behind metal-trimmed foot pedals. At the sides of that carpet, textured door panels hang padded armrests in front of smooth power mirrors, requisite power windows and standard power door locks. In front of the driver, a leather-wrapped carbon weave steering wheel seats factory cruise control opposite redundant audio controls. And naturally, all the luxuries you'd expect in a high dollar muscle car are present and accounted for including: remote keyless entry, remote start, a vehicle information center and full power accessories. HISTORICAL INFORMATION Nicely appointed from the factory, this killer coupe rolled in to Wells Motor Company of Avon Park, Florida with a long list of standard and optional equipment. Here's a breakdown of the car's original window sticker. This 1971 Challenger, for example, is an original Hemi Orange car that currently wears a sinister flat black hood with a giant hood scoop, a potent 340 Six Pack engine, and enough performance to make you forget about big blocks for a while. Starting out with a Hemi Orange car makes things easy during the restoration, but they still insisted on taking it apart and painting it right. A glance at the door jambs and inside the trunk will convince you that this California car has not only lived a good life, but that someone spent the long dollar restoring it to its current spectacular condition. It was originally a base 318 car, but all the sheetmetal was the same, so when the engine was upgraded, so were the visuals, including a complete set of black R/T stripes. And nobody does performance hoods better than Mopar, with the snorkus on this one looking big enough to swallow a pigeon. The new urethane paint shines brilliantly thanks to a professional cut-and-buff job, and very few Chryslers of the period were as carefully assembled as this car was. There's no wing on the back, which only adds to this car's appeal, although there is a satin black tail panel and bright chrome bumpers to help it stand out. Chrysler's black bucket seat interior gets high marks for both style and comfort, and even today this is a great place to spend some quality time. Most of the stuff inside is new, including the seat covers, carpets, and door panels, and obviously there's an aftermarket B&M shifter installed on the original center console. A white headliner makes it bright and airy inside despite all the black upholstery, and it's warmed up by the woodgrained steering wheel, and brightly marked instruments. Classic Industries contributed one of their modern A/C units, whose controls fit in the original spot to the left of the steering column, and to the right there's a modern AM/FM/CD stereo head unit. The trunk, you'll note, is nicely finished with Hemi Orange paint in all the right places, plus a reproduction mat and a full-sized Rallye wheel and spare tire, just in case. The original 318 was tossed in favor of a snarling 340 cubic inch V8 topped by Six Pack induction. If you've never driven one of these potent small blocks, you're in for a treat. Thanks to three 2-barrel carbs, it makes the most spectacular intake wail, and the hit of torque is quite unlike any other small block you've driven. It also looks formidable with that big Six Pack air cleaner and finned valve covers, and the detailing is impressive. The A/C system is neatly nestled in the V of the engine and almost disappears, so it looks suitably vintage, and power steering and front disc brakes give it razor-sharp reflexes on the street. Backed by a 727 TorqueFlite 3-speed automatic transmission and 8.75-inch rear end, this is a bulletproof drivetrain, and with the recent Flowmaster dual exhaust it sounds wicked. Trick modern Rallyes look right and wear staggered 215/50/17 front and 235/55/18 rear Goodyear radials. A documented California car with maintenance receipts, Chrysler Corporation Broadcast Sheet, and tag receipts from 1971, this is a Challenger that definitely delivers on the promises its looks make.
