This 1979 CJ5 offers a V8 power, cool colors, and a nice restoration to a largely stock specification, making it fairly rare in its own right, but that doesn't mean it isn't capable of going into some pretty gnarly territory all by itself. The Golden Eagle package dressed up the CJ in great '70s fashion, with bright colors and plenty of decals, and this black and gold one looks fantastic. I wonder if the Jeep designers ever heard from the guys over at Pontiac once this Jeep hit the streets, but I suppose that was the fashion and it's a look that is suddenly very much back in demand. The glossy black paint is modern urethane so it shines up nicely after a day of playing in the dirt, and while Jeeps were never renowned for their fit and finish, this one looks great. The decals are very nicely done, accurately replicating the original look and they didn't skimp, because even the pinstripes were accurately re-created. New black rubber fender flares cover the oversized tires and it includes correct little details like side marker lights, proper Jeep taillights, and a chrome front bumper with an industrial-strength grille guard. There's a matching tubular rear bumper and a pair of diamond-plate steps that make it easy to climb into the tall Jeep cockpit. Recently installed tan seat covers anchor the nicely appointed interior. The same black paint used on the body covers every unfinished interior surface, including the dash, and the floors are covered in plush black carpets, which make the Jeep feel luxurious even in its alfresco state. There's also a stock rear bench for a pair of friends, and the same centrally-located Jeep gauges in the dash that have been a Jeep trademark for decades. There's an AM/FM/CD stereo with speakers mounted in special enclosures in the rear seat area and the fat Grant steering wheel feels great in your hands. The 4-speed manual transmission is managed by a Hurst T-handle shifter and both shifters have new boots. Back floor mats give the carpets a bit of protection from dirt and wear, and while there's no top, the padded roll bar looks great and offers protection if worse comes to worst. AMC's reliable 304 cubic inch V8 is all about torque and virtually indestructible, and driving through a 4-speed manual gearbox and a two-speed transfer case it will go just about anywhere. It's rare to see a V8 Jeep and it looks great under the hood with fresh engine enamel, a new Holley 4-barrel carburetor, Edelbrock intake manifold and air cleaner, and a throaty dual exhaust system that sounds pretty darned good. The brakes have been upgraded with a modern master cylinder. Of course, with a body off restoration, the frame was totally accessible during the build, so it received new satin black paint, undercoating for sound and debris protection, and upgrades like a lift kit and new shocks. The exhaust system uses side pipes, so it has a rather un-traditional V8 rumble, and despite the big tires and lift kit, it actually rides well for such a short wheelbase vehicle. New aluminum wheels are a great choice on a flashy Jeep and wear fat 33.5x14.50R15 Super Swamper off-road radials. Go ahead, have some fun, this Jeep was built for it. Nicely rebuilt with lots of top-shelf gear, it represents perhaps the ultimate way to have fun on four wheels in the great outdoors. That's because, as we've stated numerous times, old school pickups are timeless slices of Americana that'll likely never fall out of fashion. The recipient of a concours-style, frame-off restoration, this Chevy exhibits a level of quality that was simply unobtainable on 1950s assembly lines. Pairing a 216 cubic inch 6-cylinder with a 3-speed manual transmission and striking Burgundy paint, it's sure to turn heads. And, if you're in the market for some sweet collector metal that can be driven, shown and fully enjoyed, it's exactly the ride you've been looking for! BODYWORK/TRIM After World War II, GM rolled out its Advance Design pickups nearly a full year ahead of its revised passenger cars. Why? Well, most agree that, because truck production continued throughout the war, the General's body dies were getting worn and needed replaced. It's a simple answer, and the kind of thinking you'd probably expect behind such a wonderfully uncomplicated machine. Naturally, this 3100's appeal begins on the outside where all-steel lines, memorable enough to inspire the Chevy HHR and SSR, are coated in a fantastic layer of Burgundy 2-stage. That paint, detailed with a Charcoal pinstripe, presents well from any angle, remaining a true testament to rock-solid bodywork that was conducted during the truck's no-holds-barred restoration. And everything adds up to one crisp and clean classic that's been finished to 100% show worthy standards! One of the best attributes of Advance Design pickups is their straightforward ornamentation. Not decorated to the hilt like most '40s and '50s cars, these blue-collar runabouts illustrate how solid design can remain fresh almost 70 years after it was introduced. At the front of this Chevy, a show-quality grille rides between a fresh chrome bumper, clean halogen headlights and a correctly trimmed hood. Behind that hood, a stainless-trimmed windshield leads a smoked greenhouse that's framed in bright, stainless wipers and a small driver's mirror. Beneath that mirror, a polished and bowtie-branded fuel filler floats amid stylized door handles and painted running boards. Between those boards, a spectacular Oak bed is detailed with stainless skid strips and bowtie-branded rail plugs. And beneath those plugs, a "CHEVROLET" branded tailgate reflects sleeved chains, polished tail lamps, a second chrome bumper and polished exhaust pipes. ENGINE Peer in to the truck's body-matched engine bay and you'll find a 216 cubic inch Thriftmaster 6-cylinder that was professionally rebuilt by Greeley Automotive Machine of Greeley, Colorado. Introduced for use in large platforms, and regarded as one of the all-time great Chevrolet powerplants, this "LBA" branded mill is a favorite among vintage GM truck buyers because of its simple design, adequate power and excellent durability. At the top of the block, painted Weber carburetors mix wind, supplied by satin-finish air cleaners, with fuel that's piped through braided lines and high quality XRP fittings. Those carbs ride on a clean Fenton intake, which floats above cast Fenton exhaust manifolds. Opposite those manifolds, a fresh distributor, which sequences fire between MSD Heli-Core Solid Suppression wires and a polished, 12-volt alternator, twists on a tough Comp camshaft. A beefy radiator provides cooling with the help of a large pusher fan and polished cap. And items like a Delco-Remy starter, a silver, "Chevrolet" branded valve cover and a polished oil cap ensure the bright blue powerplant is very impressive to look at. DRIVETRAIN/SUSPENSION Crawling under this classy bowtie reveals body-matched floors and a powder-coated frame that have never seen the slightest hint of inclement weather. Power meets the pavement through a traditional Muncie 3-speed, which is tied to a 10-bolt, highway-friendly rear end. Correct leaf springs and big drum brakes occupy all four corners of the chassis, mixing rugged road prowess with firm and solid stops. A polished, dual-pipe exhaust system, which is wired to a polished Patrick's muffler, runs the entire length of the truck. Everything rolls on chrome steel wheels, which turn 245/60R15 Goodyear Eagle STs around "CHEVROLET" branded hubcaps. And details like a silver oil pan, stainless fluid lines, a fresh brake booster, a silver flywheel cover and an Optima gel cell battery round out an impressive restoration. INTERIOR One part vintage and one part modern, this pickup's warm and welcoming interior looks straight out of an old school Hot Rod magazine. At the front of the cockpit, a glossy Burgundy dash hangs classy Haneline gauges opposite an old school locking glovebox. Loosely based on designer Virgil Exner's 1957 styling theme, which proclaimed "Suddenly its 1960!", this '61 Suburban debuted to mostly negative fanfare. Nonetheless, that didn't stop the car's Wyoming-based owner from proudly protecting his investment. And, 53 years later, that dedication paid off as this Plymouth rolls as an exceptionally solid survivor. Decked in all too appropriate Robin Egg Blue and Alpine White, the car appears to have always been adult pampered. Its classy, curvaceous body reflects a smooth finish that exhibits minimal signs of wear and no major defects. Its original bumpers and straight stainless trim look almost as good as the day they left the showroom. And, despite what some might call awkward proportions and excessive brightwork, this graceful classic is both striking and handsome! Top of the line for Exner-era wagons, this first class Plymouth features substantial detailing. At the front of the car, a dramatic valance centers a massive, gold-trimmed grille between stainless eyebrows, heavy headlights and an exaggerated bumper. At the sides of that valance, 'knife edge' fenders flow into jet-age quarters behind polished flashings, flush-mount door handles and small stainless rocker guards. Fire is provided by a traditional points distributor, which sequences sparks through reliable CARQUEST suppression cables. Combustion comes courtesy of a Carter 4-barrel carburetor, which breathes through a correct intake and old school exhaust manifolds. The motor's clean aluminum valve covers present well against the car's Robin Egg engine bay. And little details like original decals, a pair of Sparton horns and a MoPar green cap battery round out a nice dose of eyeball appeal. Naturally, the bottom of this boulevard king looks as expected for a 53 year old survivor. In the middle of solid floors, an original heavy duty 3-speed sends power to a correct 8.75-inch rear end. At the front of those floors, wide turns and firm feel come courtesy of correct manual steering. At the edges of those floors, solid, fade-free stops are provided by sturdy drum brakes. The big V8 barks a deep, civilized demeanor through a true-dual exhaust system that employs small, glasspack-style mufflers. All that road-worthy hardware rides on tough Cragar Radirs, which spin 215/75R15 Coker Classic whitewalls in front of 225/70R15 BF Goodrich whitewalls. And everything, from the car's clean oil pan to its leak-free fuel tank, is functional, reliable and ready to roll! Inside this Plymouth, you'll find a mostly original interior that has enough room to haul the whole family in comfort. It's a skill set that never goes out of style, especially when all these qualities have been enhanced so well on an example like this one. There were some shades of orange available from the factory in 1966, but none of them looked as good as this. You know some serious care went into the bodywork before this color was applied, simply because these Broncos saw plenty of off-road and utility use throughout their lifetime. Without some serious money invested in erasing that history, the glossy orange would reflect every bump in the road. And this Bronco was absolutely worth saving because '66 was the first model year of this now legendary nameplate, and it appears to have been very solid. This one gets its vintage appearance right with the thin chrome bumpers. Plus, the white grille and matching fiberglass top give a two-tone paint appearance. But you know there's much more to this Bronco. It has that unmistakably meaner, lifted stance, that shows this SUV takes fun very seriously. There's even more added brightwork with items like the cat eye headlights, side steps, and of course, those Eagle Alloy off-road wheels. The interior gives you the best of both worlds. You can have a convertible when you want, but the fully enclosed body with metal doors and roll up windows means you can keep the weather out too. That's why the full black carpeting looks so nice. The driver and passenger even get late model cloth bucket seats for extra comfort. But no one ever expects a bucking Bronco to coddle, and you know it the moment you sit behind the wheel and grab the cool grenade-style shifter to engage the four-wheel drive. Even as wild as this appearance is, you get good fundamentals with a grippy three-spoke steering wheel that features a smaller diameter to take advantage of the power steering. Also, the Hurst shifter on the floor does nicely for everyday driving. In front of that, there's a new custom panel that houses a full set of auxiliary gauges, so you can constantly be in better contact with what's going on in the engine bay. You can tell from the moment you pop the hood that there is no ordinary V8 powering this one. Beyond the clean-and-mean appearance, this one respects the first-year Bronco's history by starting out with the largest motor they had available at the time, the 289 cubic-inch V8. This one has been upgraded to inhale deeply with an Edelbrock four-barrel carburetor and Edelbrock Performer intake, and it exhales with authority out of performance headers on its way through the Flowmaster dual exhaust. There are also components that enhance the reliability, such as the MSD ignition, and aluminum radiator. So, in total, this is trustworthy package with one heck of a growl. It's backed by a three-speed manual transmission, and two-speed transfer case feeding both axles. Broncos have a tough off-road attitude, including being the first consumer 4x4 to utilize front coil springs, and that legacy is only enhanced with this lifted suspension and Rancho RS5000 shocks at all corners. The final part of this package is the full set of chunky and expensive Federal Couragia M/T tires. A fun 4x4 with great history and built to go play every day. HISTORY/BODY It's no secret that Chevrolet is an automotive division founded by, and named after, a prominent racecar driver. To celebrate the rampant success of the brand's NASCAR teams, GM decided to produce limited edition Monte Carlos that honored fans' favorite drivers. Without a doubt, Dale Earnhardt, a man whose name is virtually synonymous with the word Chevrolet, was one of the fans' most respected icons. The Intimidator project was initiated in 1998, when Earnhardt debuted the Intimidator Concept at the North American International Auto Show to preview NASCAR's influence on the sixth generation Monte Carlo. The first production Intimidator was essentially a run of 3,333 stripe-and-decal packages made available on the just adequate 2002 Monte Carlo SS. Then in 2004, when GM finally decided to gift the car their much-lauded supercharged V6, production ramped for 4,000 much-improved Intimidators. In addition to the hotter engine, now officially dubbed the Monte Carlo Supercharged SS, the car received an upgraded interior, an enhanced suspension and unique aesthetics. Naturally, a lot of Black paint was in order. NASCAR-style ground effects perfectly complemented a NASCAR-style deck spoiler. Red Chevrolet bowties joined red and silver "Intimidator SS" badging that could be found on the car's decklid and, in typical Monte Carlo fashion, just in front of the rear tires. And bright exhaust tips looked good trailing chrome, diamond-cut wheels. Logging only 6,522 miles over the course of 12 years, this particular 2004 Intimidator SS remains in great condition. And, aside from the car's "Intimidator" windshield banner and requisite Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet dealer decal, it rolls just as it left the showroom. DRIVETRAIN As you've probably gleaned, the sixth generation Monte Carlo was factory-equipped with GM's beefy 3800 Series II V6. And when customers checked the box for a top-option Supercharged SS, the car came equipped with a proven Eaton blower. Internally dubbed the L67, this relatively light engine is a highly reliable piece that has an excellent reputation for strong internals and impressive power. Behind the growling mill, a proven GM 4T65E-HD 4-speed makes excellent use of big displacement torque. That drivetrain rides on a wide MacPherson Strut performance suspension, which mixes standard traction control with a 10mm-reduced ride height. Stops are provided by large, power-assisted discs, which benefit from standard ABS technology. Exhaust rolls to bright stainless tips via stainless, factory-spec pipes. Power flows through diamond-cut, Intimidator-spec blades, which twist 235/55R17 Goodyear Eagle RS-As around familiar red bowties. And overall, this Chevy is an absolute delight to drive, serving as a high-water mark for the large, comfortable coupe niche that has all but disappeared. INTERIOR This sculpted Monte's sporty leather interior begins with Earnhardt-branded seats that feature 6-way power adjustment for the car's driver. In front of those seats, an Intimidator-branded dash hangs an optional 200-watt sound system between dual-zone climate control and trademark, Earnhardt-branded instrumentation. At the center of that dash, a narrow console founds a monochromatic shifter on clean carpet, color-keyed floor mats and brash Intimidator sills. Above those sills, simple door panels frame power windows, power door locks and power mirrors. A tilting, leather-wrapped steering wheel keeps cruise control and audio selection at the driver's fingertips. And a cavernous trunk continues the car's roomy theme. You can either spend well into six figures getting one of these stars, or you save enough money for a house and still get this amazing Chevelle, cloned to an SS with big-block power and four on the floor. This coupe has the perfect mix of preservation and restoration. The original Mist Blue paint has been traded in for a more attention grabbing red. What makes this hue particularly impressive is its canvas is a laser straight body with uniform gaps. This one gets the Super Sport touches right, such as chrome side moldings moved from the middle of the car to the lower sills, giving it much cleaner lines and helps accent the sporty Rally wheels. Plus, the black-trim grille, and rear fender badges, just gave these models a nice quiet aggression. This Malibu SS resisted the urge to be modified over the years with ostentatious add-ons. It just has a few subtle bow tie emblems painted to protect from key marks on the door locks. So in total, this one embraces the clean design that delighted new car buyers in the mid-60s with its combination of V8 power, and family car conservative looks. That kind of perseverance makes this one a cherished classic today. Beautiful bucket seats complete with center console are a staple of the '65 SS cars. Having all of this converted from blue to black erased years of use, and also really complements the aggressive red exterior. The factory gauges are in good order, and the SS-specific three-pod setup includes space for the temperature, oil, and battery. The shiny instrument panel has not been messed with, so you still get the placement for the heat/defrost controls and radio. But just below that, a custom panel has been built to allow for the mounting of an AM/FM/CD stereo and auxiliary gauges. So, you can have modern conveniences without ruining the vintage appearance. That big, bold 396 cubic-inch V8 looks right at home under the hood of this Chevelle SS. The block looks dressed for battle in correct Chevy orange paint against the satin black engine bay. Of course what really makes it pop is the set of chrome big block valve covers, and a correct open-element air cleaner with Turbo Jet decals on top. This one has been built to really be driven, with features like the Holley four-barrel carburetor, MSD ignition, and the braided steel hoses. There's an SRT-tuned suspension that's augmented by standard stability and traction control. Variable-ratio, speed-assisted power steering helps the car feel nimble, despite its size. Braking comes courtesy of Brembo 4-piston calipers that, with the help of standard anti-lock software, clamp 14-inch slotted rotors. After all, it has a modified V8 engine, four-speed manual, and that great wind-in-your-hair convertible experience. But the fact that it's nicely painted in the best attention-grabbing factory color is probably why you just can't get this one out of your mind. 1973 was the year of the purist C3 Corvette. It was the only time Chevrolet offered the body-colored nose with the chrome bumperettes, and legendary designer Larry Shinoda had said that this was his intentions for the C3 from the beginning (it just took them five years to get there.) There's just something about the factory yellow color on these convertibles that makes them amazing. It gives off a look-at-me attitude, but since it's this car's original correct shade, it's not being overly brazen. But the real reason it looks so good is because the recent respray was done with a meticulous hand. And, this bold from the factory appearance is carried over the whole car from the large exhaust ports to the shiny Rally wheels. It's no surprise that this factory yellow car was also ordered with the perfect complementary interior color, black. It's one of the best hues for the inside because it allows the silver accents to pop on everything from the door panels, to the three-spoke steering wheel. It also looks especially nice since the pristine bucket seats have been upgraded to leather. This one also has some nice features such as an upgraded AM/FM/cassette stereo, and provisions for air conditioning. But like any true Corvette, it's a driver's car, so you get the dual pod speedometer/tachometer in front of you, with a full gauge package prominently to the side. When the weather turns bad, it can all be buttoned up with a matching black vinyl convertible top. Open the hood, and this one is dressed to impress. Chrome accessories with tidy yellow wires command some serious attention. But beneath this great appearance is the serious substance of a Chevy 350 cubic-inch small block. These are infinitely upgradeable, and this one already has been given an Edelbrock carburetor, Edelbrock intake, and performance headers. Best of all, you can take full advantage of the motor by rowing through the Muncie M20 four-speed manual transmission. The full powertrain package makes a great rumble out of the Flowmaster dual exhaust. This is a power steering car, with front power disc brakes, and grippy Goodyear Eagle GT II tires.
