Combined with a smooth-running small block and an overdrive transmission, it's also a fantastic cruiser that gets all the little stuff right. Putting an obviously modern paint on a vintage vehicle is always a gamble, but the way this truck turned out made it worth the risk. Starting with a super-clean stepside, they stripped it and rebuilt the finish from there. Using modern 2-stage urethane gave them the ability to create something that grabs your attention, with a subtle inner glow that makes this pickup stand out at shows. Fit and finish are quite good, with doors that open and close without a slam and crisp details that prove the guys doing the work were careful. Nothing's been chopped, shaved, or smoothed, so it keeps all the neat stuff that makes these trucks popular, including the chrome-ringed parking lights in the hood and the "floating" grille below. A black "stinger" on the hood gives it a bit of an aggressive look and fresh chrome bumpers make it sparkle. The bed looks a bit weathered, but that's purely intentional, offering a wonderful contrast between the shiny paint and the truck's working-class origins. Two-tone black and orange upholstery gives it a custom look without being overdone. The original bench seat wears a custom-made cover that fits well and offers long-haul comfort. There are still rubber floor mats for easy maintenance and metal door panels, but that's how these trucks came. The chrome tilt column and sporty 3-spoke steering wheel are nice upgrades, as are the under-dash A/C system and AM/FM/cassette stereo, so this is a truck that can truly be driven cross-country. The original gauges still live behind that printed panel and there's an aftermarket tach mounted down low to keep an eye on things under the hood. You'll note that it just loafs along on the highway thanks to a 700R4 4-speed automatic overdrive transmission and the dash is as nicely finished as the rest of the bodywork. The engine is a torquey 350 cubic inch V8 that looks right at home in the vast engine bay. You know the paint job was thorough, since every square inch of the under-hood area is awash in the same copper finish. A few chrome dress-up items add some sparkle and the Edelbrock carburetor helps build horsepower. The radiator is positively massive, suitable for an engine twice this size, and the upgraded power brake system features discs up front for improved stopping power. The chassis features an independent front end with power rack-and-pinion steering, so the handling is less truck-like, and the Flowmaster exhaust system tucks up into the frame to give it plenty of ground clearance. There's still a heavy-duty rear end hanging on the original suspension, so it's ready, willing, and able to work if that's what you need, and rides on shiny 16-inch alloys with 225/60/16 front and 235/60/16 rear General radials. This very clean truck still works as a truck, retains all that made them best-sellers when they were new, yet brings it up to date so it's eminently usable in today's traffic. What could be better? It's not just the big V8, or the valuable options. This one gets you with the details, like unique paint that shows off all the square-jawed angles we all love on this piece of American muscle. White is particularly nice when it's done correctly. The respray of the factory color leaves this coupe looking clean and pristine. Dodge really got the design right in '66. This classic has a wide stance that can make this intermediate look full-sized. There's plenty of style touches like the creases along the side that flare out on the quarters, and that cool taffy-pulled rear end that couldn't space out D-O-D-G-E any wider if it tried. Best of all, a subtle custom pinstripe package helps highlight every aggressive thought that was sculpted into the sheetmetal. The interior design proves that the Chrysler stylists were at the top of their game in the '60s. This is further highlighted by a professional restoration of the headliner and intricate seats. In between the front buckets is a center console with the highly stylized gearshift. There's a dashboard full of real gauges, not "idiot" lights (a nice upgrade), and a grippy steering wheel like the three-spoke style usually seen the Hemi muscle cars. But this one is built for comfort, that's why it has everything from heat/defrost, to power steering. There's even plenty of desirable spares (including a correct AM/FM radio) that come with the car. The 440 cubic-inch V8 in the engine bay is not the original motor, but the swap was for a very good reason. This was built with a 318 and sold to a doctor who made rural house calls. The original engine failed on him in 1967, and so he figured while the car was being fixed, he'd have a factory 440 motor installed. The engine proved to be strong and reliable enough that this is the powerplant still in the car today. In 1997 this Coronet went through a restoration that overhauled the engine, and included a new cam, chain, bearings, and rings. It now makes an awesome rumble from a Flowmaster dual exhaust. The three-speed automatic transmission was also rebuilt, and they added a 2,800 RPM stall converter. But this restoration went much further. It included an entire fuel system upgrade, new brakes, new driveshaft, and a 3.23 ratio Sure-Grip limited slip read end was installed. It goes down the road nicely thanks to new brushings and Hemi-sourced torsion bars. This package is capped off with the larger 15-inch cop car wheels, with dog dish ventilated hubcaps. You know there were fewer of these MOPARs produced, compared to the Fords or Chevys back in the 60s. That makes this quick coupe a rare gem with an interesting story. So GM knew they needed to send off this final edition with the standout features that would make Corvette fans take notice even decades later. The first thing that strikes you about this coupe is the color. It's an original factory special that seems to sit somewhere between metallic shades of silver and gold like a Champaign celebration. The official Silver Beige name for this hue seems to represent the 1980s perfectly, and it's a unique paint that stands out in public nicely, even when parked amongst other Corvettes at the car show. The darker graphics on the lower doors and hood define some of the Corvette's most dramatic features. The hatchback profile, deep chin spoiler, and ducktail end cap all add to the distinctive look that was uniquely Corvette. Besides just looking amazing, this Corvette earns its Special Edition status by being only one of 6,759 commemorative cars built before General Motors shut the books on the C3. The interior is arguably more interesting than the exterior. The metallic leather seat package that was optional on late-C3s is taken one step further with a multi-tone precious metals fade, that complements the Silver Beige exterior very well. A similar pattern on the door panels and center armrest matches the unique buckets. It's loaded with options like power windows, power locks, power seats, power mirrors, tilt steering column, rear defrost, and just about anything else GM could invent to include in the top-of-the-line Corvette. This one has even been upgraded to a new AM/FM/CD stereo for the most modern tunes. Tinted glass T-tops means you can have an open-air experience with this Corvette, along with with ability to use the factory air conditioning. Plus, you can store the roof much easier thanks to the glass hatchback. This rear opening is a feature that should have always been on the late C3s, but this Special Edition was the only car that got it from the factory. The 1982 drivetrain was a preview of the new C4 Corvette. The Cross Fire Injected 350 cubic-inch V8, was torquey, powerful, and surprisingly efficient thanks to a new 700R4 four-speed automatic overdrive transmission as standard equipment. We believe this is the original motor, and it's not hard to see why by how almost completely stock it is under the hood. The offset air cleaner gives it away, but you'll be impressed by how tidy everything is and how well-maintained all the vitals are. It starts quickly and easily, makes a fantastic rumble from the dual exhaust, and snaps through the gears with authority, making for an entertaining V8 cruise. It also helps that there's a disc brake behind each one of those cool Special Edition alloy wheels, that are purposely designed to look like the iconic knock-off wire wheels of the C2. The Special Edition cars were one of the few C3s that were built in Bowling Green, not St. Louis. The modern factory meant these are sought-after today for their superior build quality. So this is interesting classic with a great story and worthy features. It only gets better when you realize that this complete vintage package is at a value price.
