Oddly, this 1930 Packard 733 is in such a superior class by its own today that you might never find a peer at car shows or concours events. Packards have always been about providing premium motoring, and this one is true elegance on wheels. The bodywork, chrome grille, lights, and all other major components show signs that they were in the care of someone who knew that maintaining did not mean fidgeting. Black is impressive on a vehicle this size, especially when it covers the body so completely. But, the real reason why it's so stunning is the intricate gold pinstriping that helps highlight this car so well - it's even inside the solid metal wheels. The paint is part of an older restoration, which actually just gives it the kind of gloss that will make people mistake it for an extremely exceptional survivor. The coupe body has an impressive presence on a car this large, and Packard's 133.5-inch wheelbase was actually the short one for the Standard Eights! This style gives you the option of having a closed coupe when you want personal elegance, and then the foldable rumble seat is there for everything from extra friends, to a place of honor in parades. Packard even included the side compartment for your set of golf clubs. Best of all, all of the chrome trim intact and has an impressive shine, including the "goddess of speed" hood ornament. Inside, the sumptuous interior has been restored to a very high level. The red leather seat is a pure attention-getter from the moment you simply open the doors, or open the rumble seat. It also coordinates nicely with the cherry wood on the dashboard giving this coupe an unparalleled elegance for its era. This kind of stylishness is repeated on the door with a combination of a wood and organic gray fabric, that also gets a touch of the bold red. There's even a retractable cigar lighter, which tells you the man who ordered this custom coupe was not yet feeling the effects of The Great Depression that would soon bring sales of premium cars like this to a trickle. Lift the hood to understand why Packards were a car to envy. Power comes from Packard's durable, and reliable, 320 cubic inch straight-eight, and the green and gray block is so long it looks like it belongs in a locomotive. It still embodies all the precise tolerances, and impeccable engineering for which Packard was famous. Just like the exterior, this one has a very nice restoration that has the engine bay slightly aged to look like the ultimate pristine survivor. This powerplant is mated to a four-speed manual transmission, and the complete drivetrain is believed to be original. This is the era before synchromesh, but tall rear gears means you can drive this car about wherever you want without much double-clutching. In fact, compared to other cars of the era, this Packard is a joy to take around town thanks to its multi-functional taillight and four-wheel brakes. A Packard was a sign of wealth and distinction when it was new, and the reputation has only grown as these elegant machines have become more rare. This one is a cut above, and even comes with documentation and paperwork such as the owner's manual. Finding another out there this complete, correct, and nice will be tough, and we know it one won't last in our showroom. And in the 1930s, when the marque was tops in the luxury car market, elegant offerings like this magnificent Twelve rightfully earned the tagline 'Boss of the Road'. As smooth now as it was over seven decades ago, this defiantly massive convertible is the absolute pinnacle of pre-war automotive luxury. Enjoyed by only three owners, the car is a known, authentic example of one of the most desirable Classic Era Packards on the planet. As one of only 1,300 1937 Twelves produced, it has been awarded a National First Prize from the AACA and First Senior honors from the CCCA. And presently, it sits as a well-documented, professionally restored cruiser that's an elegant representation of some of America's best history! BODYWORK/TRIM The 15th Series was a conservatively elegant automobile that gave credibility to Packard marketeers' claims of products "as modem as an architectural design by Frank Lloyd Wright". Despite the same finely tailored lines and top-notch appointments, the brand's transition to more streamlined styling would be increasingly evident throughout the decade. But, at its core, the Twelve remained a Classic Era Packard, featuring a towering radiator shell, bullet-shaped headlights, a trademark chrome grille, flowing, skirted fenders, and a familiar 'Cormorant' hood ornament. ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN In the age of 16-cylinder luxury, the Twelve was one of the fastest cars you could buy for anything less than Duesenberg money. That said; the higher-powered offerings from Cadillac, Marmon and Pierce-Arrow could probably nip a Packard Twelve in a close race. But a modified mill like this roadster's 473 cubic inch L-head V12 certainly wasn't something to readily bet against. For 1937, the Twelve's running gear underwent the most radical redesign in its history. The car's traditional 3-speed synchromesh transmission was augmented with an independent front suspension, marketed as "Safe-T-Flex", a proven hydraulic brake system and steel disk wheels. This resulted in 15th Series Packards, most prominently the top-of-the-line 12-cylinder models, being widely regarded as some of the most driver-friendly cars of the Classic Era; with the smooth, effortless engineering of vacuum-boosted brakes and a vacuum-boosted clutch being particularly well-suited to modern roads. As such, the most desirable open body styles are only rarely offered for sale. HISTORY The Coupe Roadster pictured here is a known, authentic and exclusive classic that's believed to be 1 of only 69 builds. The car still has its original firewall tag. Its history is known all the way back to the 1950s. And, for over half a century, this drop-top was the prized possession of well-known Southern California enthusiast Bob Hance, who regularly displayed it at CCCA activities and Golden State Concours d'Elegance. In 2001, when Mr. Hance decided to sell his 2-owner gem, a ground-up, professional restoration was well documented via photographs and receipts. Naturally, that restoration involved impeccable attention to detail, featuring items such as correct pinstripe patterning, a correct leather interior, correct wool carpet and a correctly detailed engine bay. And the car wears many factory accessories including: a heater, a trunk rack, a correct 30-gallon fuel gauge indicator, a factory-installed AM radio that's wired to an under-car antenna and chrome wheel covers that are complete with Packard cloisonne emblems. Since that restoration the car has seen quite a few significant milestones, achieving CCCA Senior Premier status, being recorded as a 2009 AACA National First Prize winner and completing a 900-mile CCCA CARavan. A Packard was a sign of wealth and distinction when it was new, and the reputation has only grown as these elegant machines have only grown rarer. Packards have always been about providing premium motoring, but this one shows a high level of class in its originality. The bodywork, chrome grille, solid pinstripe wheels, lights, foldable luggage rack, and all other major components look like they were in the care of someone who knew that maintaining did not mean fidgeting. This car was refreshed about forty years ago, which was more about extensive maintenance than replacement. The Runabout body style is one of the most iconic forms of the era. You have an open motoring roadster for when you want personal elegance, and then the foldable rumble seat is there for everything from extra friends to a place of honor in parades. For added weather protection, there is a folding canvas top with the factory-correct side curtains to fully button-up this classic. Because this Packard would spend most of its time open to the world, the interior perfectly complements the exterior. The original black leather seats coordinate well with the earthtone green and black accents on the outside. The real wood panels inside complete this organic feeling. There might be a place or two that could use a new lacquer finish for those who don't cherish absolute originality. Overall, it's hard to find a piece that has been replaced (or needs replacing) in the 87 years since this luxury car first left the factory. There is plenty of space for the driver and passenger within this car's 126-inch wheelbase (because 1928 was the fifth year for this series, this is often referred to as a 5-26 or 526 model). Powering this Packard is the 289 cubic-inch straight six cylinder motor that is mated to a three-speed manual transmission (pre-synchromesh). 1928 was the final year for the "Single Six" and constant improvement to this model meant its 81 hp was now approaching its larger eight-cylinder brother. All Packards carried the same engineering marvels of the time such as the four-wheel brakes, chassis lubrication system, and pedal activated stop light. While the six-cylinder was a bit more economical, it is like trying to compare Rolls-Royces today. The cost of this Runabout when new could have bought around five Ford Model A's. In fact, Packard used a great analogy to help people understand why the 526 models were so expensive. The company would mention that people once bought paper-soled shoes until they realized buying better shoes lasted longer. So Packard warned others not to pay less for paper-soled cars. Imagine if had they had only known how long this roadster would last! Packard promoted this one as a car that offered beauty, distinction, comfort, long life, economy, and safety. Nine decades later, we couldn't agree more. Finding another out there is tough, this one won't last in our showroom...call today!!! 1928 Packard 526 Runabout for Sale 1928 Packard 526 Runabout for Sale Stock # 3048-CHA Charlotte Showroom 5400 West WT Harris Blvd Charlotte, NC 28269 Local/International: (704) 598-2130 Toll-Free: (866) 542-8392 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM EST Sat: 9AM - 5PM EST Email: [email protected] Atlanta Showroom 213 Thornton Rd Lithia Springs, GA 30122 Local/International: (678) 279-1609 Toll-Free: (877) 367-1835 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM EST Sat: 9AM - 5PM EST Email: [email protected] Dallas/Fort Worth Showroom 5400 Sandshell Dr Fort Worth, TX 76137 Local/International: (817) 764-8000 Toll-Free: (855) 877-2707 Hours: Tues - Fri: 9AM - 6PM CST Sat: 9AM - 5PM CST Email: [email protected] TERMS OF SALE 1. If you're a Packard fan, then you already realize that cars like this 1950 Packard are very special machines that drive superbly and offer a level of quality few other automakers could match. And if you don't know the name Packard, well, maybe this car will fill in the details for you. The fastback coupe, or club coupe, body style on this 23rd Series Packard, is the perfect antidote to the frumpy styling of the immediate post-war era. Smooth, sleek, and very streamlined, it offers a glimpse into the future with a handsome period twist. Accentuating the car's aerodynamic profile with two-tone white and blue paint is a smart idea and the colors are period-correct so there's nothing to distract you from the clean shape. It's not a show car, but the paint and good panel fit mean that you'll never shy away from a cruise-in with it, and with exemplary road manners, you'll probably start looking for new spots to attend just so you have someplace to drive. Restrained use of chrome and stainless was a hallmark of Packard design, and the brightwork on this car is in decent shape, perhaps even original, from the stylized hood ornament, to the distinctive Packard grille, to the wrap-around rear bumper. Luxurious yet conservative interiors were the name of the game for Packard, and this car sports gray cloth bench seats, what appear to be original door panels, and a simple dashboard layout to make driving the car easy. The gauges are arranged in two round pods holding the speedometer and clock, with auxiliary gauges tucked in between, all visible through the spokes of the very cool steering wheel. This car is equipped with Packard's first automatic transmission, a 2-speed unit called the "UltraMatic" that works as advertised. Secondary controls are arrayed under the dash with big ivory-colored knobs, and with the 12-volt conversion, the original gauges have been supplanted by auxiliary dials tucked in underneath. There's also an AM/FM/CD stereo head unit neatly installed in the center of the dash, although the unique vertically-oriented Packard AM radio is still in its slot. The back seat is spacious enough for full-sized adults, and despite the fastback profile, the trunk is spacious and includes a full-sized spare tire. The 288 cubic inch straight-8 engine features nine main bearings and impeccable smoothness, as you'd expect from the biggest name in inline eights. It won't win any drag races, but there's a swell of torque at any speed, and the automatic transmission needs only to get into high range and stay there, letting the engine's low-RPM grunt do all the work. As I mentioned, it has been upgraded to 12 volts, so there's a modern alternator tucked down low, and newer wiring throughout to accommodate the increased voltage. The original downdraft carburetor with oil bath air cleaner still manages the fuel, and the single exhaust system has a pleasant 8-cylinder hum that's totally appropriate. The unrestored undercarriage shows off years of clean living with surface scale and grease, but no glaring issues, suggesting this car has always been a favorite. Stock steel wheels and hubcaps are surrounded by period-correct wide whites. This Packard represents a lot of car for the money and the attractive (and somewhat rare) body style certainly helps. To survive the Great Depression, independent automaker Packard had to diversify, and that meant selling more cars to more people. Hence, the 120. With all the quality and precision of a senior car, the 120 offers Packard style and performance at a Buick price. And this very original 1937 Packard 120 touring sedan proves just how good these cars really were. There\'s no mistaking the Packard look, and it was no mistake that the 120 looked a lot like its big brothers. The grille is a Packard trademark dating back to the early \'teens and got a sleeker look in 1937. It\'s worth noting that the lovely brown paint on this car is original, and not only does it have a wonderful soft gloss today, but its condition is indicative of the quality that went into each Packard that was built, even the affordable ones! The doors close with that solid \'thunk\' that only ancient original cars seem to offer, and while there are some signs of wear, there are more signs of the love and attention this car received over its scant 58,844 miles. Of course, a lot of that preservation can be attributed to a long stint in a museum in Colorado, and it\'s easy to see how they\'d find this an artifact worthy of preservation. Nice chrome, lovely bumpers, and that dominating grille make for a very attractive package. The tan cloth interior is every bit as original and every bit as nice as the exterior. Sure, there are some signs of age, but after all, who looks their best when they\'re almost 80 years old? Bench seats were all that you got in 1937, but the front is intimate for two, with space for three in back and nobody\'s going to complain about legroom. The 120 was simpler than the big cars, but no less beautifully crafted, and it shows in details like the door panels and hardware, as well as the love instruments, which have a fantastic 1930s look. The big steering wheel and light effort make the 120 one of the more nimble cars of the period and synchromesh was standard equipment by then, so the 3-speed transmission shifts easily without any grinding. Both the heater/defroster unit and the AM radio were expensive options in 1937, and while the radio isn\'t working it\'s a fantastic addition to this car\'s pedigree. Even the trunk is quite original showing some use but no signs of neglect. The 120 was a great car simply because it offered Packard 8-cylinder power in a smaller package. Enthusiasts in the know will argue that the 120 is perhaps the best-driving Packard of the era, simply due to its all-new independent front suspension and superior brakes, not to mention a great power-to-weight ratio. The 282 cubic inch straight-8 purrs along with nary a vibration to be felt, and while the engine bay isn\'t detailed for show, it definitely looks like someone took proper care of it from the beginning. There\'s a replacement exhaust system with a pleasant 8-cylinder burble and you\'ll be pleased to note that the starter, generator, and water pump have all been rebuilt so it\'s ready to tour. The electrical system is augmented with an 8-volt battery for stronger starts and newer 16-inch wide whitewall radials are fitted that only add to its superlative road manners. These are simply wonderful cars and I know it\'s clich%26Atilde;%26copy;, but the old ad still rings true: \"Ask the man who owns one.\" I guarantee he\'ll tell you this is a great car, regardless of price. Legendary Packard prestige and luxury made affordable was the 250\'s mission in 1951, and as this elegant, sporting convertible demonstrates, it\'s just as true today. Only 2,572 Series 250 convertibles were built in 1951, making this a rare car with legendary straight-8 power and undeniable Packard presence. The all-new 250 was designed to be a low-cost Packard, but everything\'s relative, as it still cost as much as a Cadillac in 1951. The styling was conservative as ever, but with a handsome, rounded look that would serve until 1956 when Packard merged with Studebaker in a last attempt to stay alive. Wearing period-appropriate burgundy paint, this handsome convertible has a look that commands attention beyond your average Fords and Chevys and when parked next to a comparable Cadillac of the period, you can see where the money was spent. The exterior is very good, with straight bodywork and good panel alignment, suggesting that this car, like most Packards, lived an easy life with people who loved it. The interior isn\'t entirely authentic, but they did work to get the look right using a combination of pleats and flat panels, and the cloth upholstery is quite comfortable when the sun is overhead. Matching door panels were created at the same time, and there\'s plenty of bright trim to make the Packard feel special inside. A big color-matched steering wheel frames three gauges with all the vitals and simple brushed metal faces, as was the fashion in the early \'50s. The shifter controls Packard\'s \"Ultramatic\" automatic transmission and operation feels quite modern, so getting this one out on the road is easy, even for first-timers. The center stack houses the AM radio and heater controls, proving that nothing much has changed in the past six decades. The upholstery is in excellent condition with minimal wear, the carpets look almost new, and like the exterior, everything looks about the same age and condition so it\'s quite a pleasant place to spend some time. The convertible top is an older replacement unit, but it folds easily and seals up well enough to make this a no-fear car on tour. Packard\'s bulletproof 327 cubic inch straight-8 is as smooth and torquey here as you\'d expect. It starts with a muscular 8-cylinder burble and moves the car with an uncanny ease that was surely engineered into it. The engine bay was obviously well-detailed when it was restored and shows minor signs of use today, but all of the original equipment is intact, from the oil bath air cleaner to the accessory oil filter on the side of the block. The Ultramatic automatic transmission shifts almost imperceptibly and this car gathers momentum so easily that you\'ll often find yourself going 10 MPH faster than you thought. The underside is clean and covered in satin black for a low-maintenance look, and it appears to have a recent reproduction exhaust system that sounds right. Flashy H78-15 wide whitewalls with traditional Packard wheel covers give it an authentic period look. Compared to other luxury cars of the era, this Packard is rare and powerful and offers tremendous value for the money. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Charlotte showroom. In the 1930s, just about anybody who was anyone owned a Packard. Their magical blend of luxury, engineering, and performance are still legendary, and cars like this 1938 Packard Eight convertible are near the top of every pre-war era collector\'s wish list. There\'s no arguing that this is a spectacular looking car. And when you factor in the handsome burgundy paint with red pin stripping that lays flat on the fenders, the appeal becomes quite astounding. It\'s a truly massive and rakish piece of art, with a stunning top-down profile that belongs in a parade. Finish work is up to the standards that you\'d expect from a senior Packard, with four doors that fit well and glossy paint that will look great on the show field or on tour. Dual sidemounts make it look that much more impressive, along with a rear-mounted trunk that adds valuable storage capacity. Correct chrome bumpers, amber fog lights, and thermostatically-controlled radiator shutters add to the visual eye-candy. The interior offers a level of vintage authenticity with elegant, burgundy leather seating. Garnish moldings and hardware help keep the original theme, and all the controls on the dash, including the steering wheel and gauges, are all Packard items. Even the under-dash heater is an accessory unit that\'s still hooked up and functional. The long floor shifter features a knob that matches the large diameter banjo steering wheel. There\'s expansive legroom for the rear passengers, and the canvas top requires a couple people to raise or lower, but it\'s worth it because it stacks neatly behind the seat for a sporty open-air look. The 282 cubic inch Packard straight-8 is known for being torquey, smooth, reliable, and still embodies all the precise tolerances and impeccable engineering for which Packard was famous. It spins to life easily, and idles so smoothly you may have to check to be sure it\'s still running. A 3-speed manual transmission propels the big convertible as it accelerates reasonably well and cruises at 50 MPH without difficulty. Brakes are 4-wheel mechanical drums, so plan your stops accordingly, and 4-ply whitewall BF Goodrich Silvertown tires maintain a vintage look and comfortable ride. This Packard has been meticulously maintained and includes a data book with specs and an owner\'s manual. There\'s no doubt that when you pull up in this convertible that people will stop and stare with plenty of compliments will follow. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Charlotte showroom. For fans of the Classic era, there are few names more impressive and desirable than Packard. Luxurious, powerful, exceptional machines, cars like this 1929 Packard 633 limousine were top-of-the-line transportation for people who could have anything they wanted. With a fresh restoration, this lovely 7-passenger vehicle is ready to show and tour anywhere. Packard made things easy with their names, with the 633 being the Sixth Series (Packard didn\'t really use model years) on a 133.5-inch wheelbase. There was also a smaller 626 plus larger 640 and 645 models, but they all had the same intrinsic Packard quality. Only a handful of 633 7-passenger limousines were built, and given the costs of restoring one to this condition, it\'s no surprise that very few survive today. Finished in elegant burgundy with black trim and fenders, it\'s stately and formidable, just as you\'d expect from a car such as this. Fit and finish are exemplary, and the lines between the colors are crisp, suggesting a lot of care went into the paint job. All the chrome has been refinished, definitely an expensive proposition and the original Adonis hood ornament is finely detailed and in excellent condition. If you think the pictures look good, you will be blown away when you see this one in person - this car is truly amazing. Inside, the sumptuous interior has been likewise restored to a very high level. Since this car was designed to be chauffeur-driven, the front compartment is durable black leather, as original, because Packard designers knew the driver would be in and out of the car frequently in all types of weather. The rear compartment was trimmed in more luxurious cloth (remember it was only fairly recently that leather became the luxurious upgrade in automotive interiors), complete with deep pile carpets and matching jump seats folding out of the front seatback. The lovely woodgraining throughout the passenger compartment has been fully restored, and all the gauges are operational. When the divider window is up, there\'s also a microphone with which passengers may speak with the driver, an elegant feature beautifully executed and brilliantly functional. Power comes from Packard\'s durable and reliable 320 cubic inch straight-8. Although it is regarded as the Standard Eight by today\'s enthusiasts, it still embodies all the precise tolerances and impeccable engineering for which Packard was famous. It spins to life easily and idles so smoothly you may have to check to be sure it\'s still running. A 3-speed manual transmission requires double-clutching, as synchronizers were still a year or two away, and a set of 4.69 gears out back means that the big sedan accelerates reasonably well and cruises at 50 MPH without difficulty. Brakes are 4-wheel mechanical drums, so plan your stops, and few cars look better with disc wheels than a senior Packard. Five new Firestone wide whites have been installed, making this one as ready as they get. There\'s a reason all Packards of this vintage are Full Classics and why they always find new homes quickly. Big, impressive, and very roadworthy, this Packard limousine represents the very best of the Classic Era, and is a joy to drive. Call today! This vehicle is located in our Atlanta showroom. Only 2,572 Series 250 convertibles were built in 1951, making this a rare car with legendary straight-8 power and undeniable Packard presence. The all-new 250 was designed to be a low-cost Packard, but everything's relative, as it still cost as much as a Cadillac in 1951. The interior isn't entirely authentic, but they did work to get the look right using a combination of pleats and flat panels, and the cloth upholstery is quite comfortable when the sun is overhead. Matching door panels were created at the same time, and there's plenty of bright trim to make the Packard feel special inside. A big color-matched steering wheel frames three gauges with all the vitals and simple brushed metal faces, as was the fashion in the early '50s. The shifter controls Packard's "Ultramatic" automatic transmission and operation feels quite modern, so getting this one out on the road is easy, even for first-timers. The center stack houses the AM radio and heater controls, proving that nothing much has changed in the past six decades. The upholstery is in excellent condition with minimal wear, the carpets look almost new, and like the exterior, everything looks about the same age and condition so it's quite a pleasant place to spend some time. The convertible top is an older replacement unit, but it folds easily and seals up well enough to make this a no-fear car on tour. Packard's bulletproof 327 cubic inch straight-8 is as smooth and torquey here as you'd expect. The Ultramatic automatic transmission shifts almost imperceptibly and this car gathers momentum so easily that you'll often find yourself going 10 MPH faster than you thought.
